The susceptibility of young adolescents to reference group influence: A study about the influences of peers and parents on the attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products.

The purpose of this study is to examine how susceptible young adolescents (between 12 and 14 years) are to the influence of reference groups. In contrast to earlier research, only the influence for luxury products is measured for the young adolescents’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of these products. 240 young adolescents received one of the four manipulated texts to test if either peers or parents have an influence on their attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and judgments of either a publicly consumed luxury product (the iPhone) or a privately consumed luxury product (the iMac). Peers have significant more influence on the attitudes towards,… the iPhone, parents influence the respondents attitudes towards,… the iMac. Also the personality characteristic ‘susceptibility to reference group influence’ was measured and results show that respondents who were more susceptible to normative and/or informational reference group influences have better attitudes towards , interests in, evaluations of and judgments of luxury products. Also an interaction effect between the parental influence and the susceptibility to informational reference group influences was noticed, for the quality judgments of the iMac. No other significant interactions were found. The other personality variable, ‘materialism’ had also a significant effect. Young adolescents who were more materialistic have better attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products.

Introduction

The influence that interpersonal groups have on the behaviour of the individual has been recognised for some time in academic research (Bourne, 1957; Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Moore , Wilkie and Alder, 2002). Models that used to explain consumer behaviour frequently include interpersonal influence. These models recognise that consumer behaviour cannot be fully understood unless consideration is given to the effects of interpersonal influence on the development of attitudes, norms, values, aspirations and purchase behaviour. (Stafford and Cocanougher, 1977)

In consumer research, the concept of reference group influence has been examined by several studies. (Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Moore, Wilkie and Alder, 2002) The reference group concepts have been used by several advertisers in their efforts to persuade consumers to purchase products and brands and contribute to their values and attitudes towards products (Bearden and Etzel, 1982).

Given the influence of others is a determinant factor in the attitudes, behaviour and purchase decisions of individuals, it is important to study which referents of an individual have influence on which product and brand evaluations. The purpose of this paper is to distinguish the influence of friends (peers) of the individual on the one hand and the influences of the parents of the individual on the other hand. A lot of research pointed out the importance of these two reference groups for consumer behaviour (Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Bearden and Etzel, 1982; Park and Lessig, 1977; Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993, Escalas and Bettman, 2003). But all of these studies have some important lacks:

First, most of the experimental research, conducted in psychology and consumer behaviour, has used college students as respondents. There has been a surprising lack of research on the topic of social influence as it impacts children’s and young adolescents’ consumer behaviour and attitudes. Because research shows that reference group influence becomes very important as children enter their teenage years (Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993), this study will focus on young adolescents between 12 and 14 years old.

Moreover, a lot of these studies focus on the influence of reference groups on the purchase intentions and consumption of products. A small part of the studies have focused on the individuals’ attitudes and evaluations of the products. Because in this study luxury products will be examined, the attitudes and evaluations of the individuals about luxury products will be emphasized. The target group, young adolescents, doesn’t always have the opportunity and money to buy luxury products, so it is more significant to measure the attitudes and evaluations youngsters have towards luxury products, instead of measuring their consumer behaviour or purchase intentions of these luxury products.

When measuring the reference group influences of respondents, few of the earlier studies pointed out the importance of the personal characteristics of the respondents. First, it is important to know how susceptible respondents are to reference group influence. Therefore susceptibility to interpersonal influence appears to be an important individual difference variable for the study of consumer behaviour But it unfortunately has been neglected as a general trait in recent literature (Clark and Goldsmith, 2006, p.34).

A second important personal characteristic that should be linked to luxury consumption is materialism. Because materialism has become a highly researched area, it is important to understand the connection between luxury consumption and materialism (Ahuvia and Wong, 1992). The association with reference group influence on luxury products with the degree of materialism has never been measured, although this can obtain relevant insights for further consumer research.

Reference Group Influence

A reference group is defined by Park and Lessig (1977, p.102) as “an actual or imaginary individual or group conceived of having significant relevance upon an individual’s evaluations, aspirations, or behaviour”. Reference groups are usually conformed by the social network of an individual: family members, friends, colleagues and inspirational figures (Bachman, Johnn and Rao, 1993, Cotte J. and Wood, S.L , 2004). From a consumer-behaviour perspective, it appears that the products and brands that individuals select can be influenced by their reference groups (Bearden and Etzel, 1982).

For children, family members and peers are undoubtedly the most dominant reference groups, followed by more distant figures such as sports heroes and movie stars (Cotte J. and Wood, S.L 2004, p.79). In this study the differences of influence between familial and peer-based reference groups will be distinguished. According to the study of Chidlers and Rao (1992) a peer group is “a social group consisting of people who are equal in such respects as age, education or social class. Peer groups are an informal primary group of people who share a similar or equal status and who are usually of roughly the same age.’’ The peers of the individual are mostly considered as his or her nearest friends. (Bachman, John and Rao, 1993). In this study the emphasis is on the individuals’ friends on the one hand. On the other hand, for familial reference groups, the parents of the individual (mother and father) are considered.

It is clear that both parents and peers have a strong influence on the individual’s attitudes and interests of products (Chidlers and Rao, 1992). But both referents influence the individuals on a different way. (Moore, Wilkie and Alder, 2002). Churchill and Moschis (1979) have suggested that young people learn form their parents the ‘goal-oriented’ or ‘rational’ aspects of consumption. On the other hand, young people learn the symbolic meaning of goods from their peers. These influences may have more significance in situations involving conspicuous consumptions. (Churchill and Moschis, 1979, p. 23).

The differences in influence between parents and peers can be operationalized as ‘informational social influence’ of parents and ‘normative social influence’ of peers (Deutsch and Gerard, 1955). Cohen and golden (1972) pointed out the potential importance of informational social influence to the area of product evaluation and quality judgments. In this study, not only the influence of reference groups on product attitudes and interests will be measured. Also the influence on the individuals’ evaluations and quality judgments of the products will be examined.

From marketing and consumer-behaviour perspectives, the influence of reference groups on individual behaviour is often manifested in the types of products and brands purchased by individuals (Chidlers and Rao, 1992 p. 199) Bourne (1957, p.218) originally proposed that reference group influence on product and brand decisions and attitudes is a function of two forms of conspicuousness.

The first condition, affecting product attitudes is that the item must be ‘exclusive’ in some way. This is operationalized here as the distinction between luxuries and necessities (Bearden ad Etzel, 1982). Necessities can be described as “products possessed by virtually everyone” while luxuries have a degree of exclusivity. Second, for reference group influence the items must be “seen or identified by others”. This can be operationalized in terms of where an item is consumed. Publicly consumed products are seen by others, while privately consumed products are not. (Bearden and Etzel, 1982 p. 184) In this study only the luxury products will be examined and the differences between publicly consumed luxury products and privately consumed luxury products will be pointed out.

Reference Group Influence and Luxury Products

The influence of reference groups is likely to vary across four product categories: publicly consumed luxuries, publicly consumed necessities, privately consumed luxuries and privately consumed necessities (Chidlers & Rao, 1992, p.200).

This study examines two of the four product categories: publicly consumed luxuries and privately consumed luxuries. Bearden and Etzel (1982) concluded that there are strong reference group influences for luxury products, because these products are more conspicuous. For products that are not conspicuously consumed, the individual has little opportunity to interact with peers regarding the purchase of or attitude towards the product. (Bearden and Etzel, 1982 p. 184). Also Amaldoss and Jain (2008) still suggest that consumers are especially susceptible to reference group effects when the products are luxury products.

Chidlers & Rao (1992, p. 201) defined publicly consumed luxuries as “products that are observed when being consumed and are not commonly owned”. Such products are exclusive, and that makes them conspicuous and thus susceptible to reference group influence. Privately consumed luxuries were described as “products that are not observed by others during the act of consumption and are also not commonly owned”. Such products also attract high reference group influences, because of the conspicuousness (Amaldoss and Jain, 2008).

When measuring the differences of peer-based influence and parental influences on the purchase intentions of individuals, Chidlers and Rao (1992) concluded that friends have a strong influence on the purchase intentions of publicly consumed products (luxuries and necessities). The influence of parents was strong for privately consumed products (luxuries and necessities). Because in this research, the reference group influences on individuals’ attitudes, interests, evaluations and quality judgments of luxury products will be measured, following hypotheses are constructed:

H1: The influence of the individuals’ peers on the individuals’ attitudes towards (H1a), interests in (H1b), evaluations of (H1c) and quality judgments of (H1d) the publicy consumed luxury product wil be stronger than the influence of the individuals’ parents.

H2: The influence of the individuals’ parents on the individuals’ attitudes towards (H2a), interests in (H2b), evaluations of (H2c) and quality judgments of (H2d) the privately consumed luxury product will be stronger than the influence of the indivuals’ peers.

Young adolescents and the susceptibility to reference groups influence

There has been a lot of research of reference group influence on consumer behaviour of individuals, but there has been a surprising lack of research on the topic of social influence as it impacts children’s and young adolescents consumer behaviour and attitudes (Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993).

Reference group influence becomes very important as children enter their teenage years (Spijkerman, Van den Eijnden, Overbeek and Engels, 2007). Children must have developed certain social sensitivities and cognitive skills before they are susceptible to reference group influence (Churchill and Moschis, 1979). Bachmann, John and Rao (1992) therefore pointed out that children 12 years of age and older are the ultimate purveyors and receivers of reference group influence. Not only do they now recognize the intricacies of social interactions with others, but they are also painfully aware of the tendency for psychological impressions to be formed on the basis of consumption preferences and choices (Bachman, John and Rao, 1992, p. 465). This reference group influence increases when children progress through childhood to adolescence. (Spijkerman, ,Van den Eijnden, Overbeek and Engels (2007). Because of these findings, this research focuses on young adolescents between the age of 12 and 14 years old.

An important object of this study is to examine the susceptibility of these young adolescents to reference group influence in the case of luxury products. Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel (1989) developed a scale to measure the susceptibility of individuals to interpersonal influence. They defined consumer susceptibility to interpersonal influence as “ The need to identify or enhance one’s image with significant others through the acquisition and use of products and brands, the willingness to conform to the expectations of others regarding purchase decisions and/or the tendency to learn about products and services by observing others and/or seeking information from others”(Bearden, Nettemeyer and Teel, 1989, p. 474). They concluded that susceptibility to interpersonal influence is a general trait that varies across persons and that a person’s relative influenceability in one situation tends to have a significant positive relationship to his or her influenceability in a rage of other social situations. (Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel, 1989 p. 473).

Other literature argued that interpersonal influence manifests itself through either normative or informational influences (Clark and Goldsmith, 2006). Burnkrant and Cousineau (1975) defined normative influence as “the tendency to conform to the expectations of others”. Consumer research has separated normative influence into value expressive and utilitarian influences (Bearden and Etzel, 1982). Value expressiveness reflects the individual’s desire to enhance self-image by association with a reference group. Utilitarian influence is reflected in individuals’ attempts to comply with the expectations of others to achieve rewards or avoid punishments, and it operates through the process of compliance. Informational influence was defined as “the tendency to accept information from others as evidence about reality.” (Burkrant and Cousineau, 1975 p. 207).

For this research, the susceptibility to reference group influence of our respondents will be measured and we will distinguish this susceptibility into normative and informational influences. Because susceptibility to reference group influence is a personal characteristic of an individual, we will measure if there is an interaction effect between the influence of peers or parents, the product type (public, private) and the normative or informational susceptibility to reference group influence, for the attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products. Therefore, following hypotheses are constructed:

H3: Respondents who are susceptible to normative and/or informational reference group influences have better attitudes towards (H3a), interests in (H3b), evaluations of (H3c) and quality judgments of (H3d) luxury products than respondents who are not susceptible to normative and/or informational reference group influences.

H4a. Respondents who are more susceptible to informational reference group influence will be stronger influenced by their parents in their attitudes towards interests in evaluations of and quality judgments of private luxury products than by their peers. H4b: Respondents who are more susceptible to normative reference group influence will be stronger influenced by their peers in their attitudes towards interests in evaluations of and quality judgments of public luxury products than by their parents.

Reference Group Influence and Materialism

The predilection for luxury goods is often viewed as a sign of materialism (Ahuia and Wong, 1995). Understanding the connection between conspicuous consumption and materialism is necessary if one wishes to evaluate luxury consumption. According to Richins ad Dawson (1992) one key element of materialism is the belief that one’s own and others’ success can be measured by the things he owns.

If materialists believe that success can be visibly demonstrated through possessions, it stands to reason that expensive luxury goods would be a natural mechanism for such demonstrations. This inference is confirmed by empirical evidence which showed that compared to low materialists, high materialists are more likely to value expensive objects, items that convey prestige, and objects that enhance the owner’s appearance (Richins, 1994b, p.536)

Because of these findings, and the previous insights related to reference group influences the last hypothesis is constructed, where the personal characteristic ‘materialism’ is seen as a intermediary variable between reference group influence and the attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products: H5: Respondents who are high materialistic have better attitudes towards (H5a), interests in (H5b), evaluations of (H5c) and quality judgments of (H5d) luxury products than respondents who are less materialistic. H6:. Respondents who are high materialistic will be stronger influenced by their peers in their attitudes towards (H6a) interests in (H6b) evaluations of (H6c) and quality judgments of (H6d) public luxury products than respondents who are not materialistic.

Research Design and Stimuli

The study employed two times a 2 (Product) x 2 (Reference Group) x 2 (Susceptibility to reference group influence) / 2 (Materialism) factorial design The product type (public luxury or private luxury) and reference group type ( peers or parents) were manipulated on the basis of four texts. Two types of luxury products were choosen based on the results of a pretest. This pretest was conducted to identify a set of products, representing the two types: public luxury and private luxury.

In this pretest 20 young adolescents (9 men and 11 women) of the age of 13 (N=13) and 14 years (N=7) were given a large list of possible products that were gender-neutral and familiar to young adolescents. Children were presented with the list of products and asked to classify each product as either public or private and as luxury or not. Before responding to the list of products, children were provided with a concrete definition of each term. The respondents could give answers on a 7-point rating scale from ‘totally not agree (=0) till ‘totally agree’ (=7). Based on these answers, the iPhone was chosen as a publicly consumed luxury good and the PC/laptop was chosen as a privately consumed luxury good. To specify the last product, the iMac computer was chosen.

For the main study, the four texts were used. Two of the four texts described the iPhone: the first text described the iPhone as a product that is very popular at young people and it has a lot of cool opportunities. The accent of the first text is that when you have such an iPhone, all of your friends would think you are so cool and popular. The second text of the iPhone expresses that your parents consider the iPhone as a very educational product. Your parents support you to buy and use the iPhone because this product is very instructive. The third and fourth texts described the iMac computer. The third also accentuates the importance of how your friends evaluate this computer. They think that when you have an iMac, you are very cool and popular. And the fourth text expresses again the importance of the iMac computer for parents. They support to buy and use this iMac because this product is also very instructive and good for you. A small picture of the iPhone or the iMac was added to the texts. These four texts were first tested by a small group of 20 respondents, to know if the essence of the texts was clear enough.

After reading one of the four texts, respondents needed to fill in the same questionnaire, where the other variables were asked. The ‘susceptibility to reference group influence’ was measured as an intermediary variable, because it is seen as a personal characteristic that varies across individuals. The scale of Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel (1989) was used to measure whether the respondents were more susceptible to normative or informational social influences. This scale consists of 12 items each operationalized as a bipolar, 7-place rating scale raging from stronly agree to strongly disagree. All items were positively worded. The 12 items reflect two correlated dimensions of susceptibility to interpersonal influence. Items scores are summed within each dimension to form normative and informational indices.(Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel, 1989).

The ‘materialism variable’ was also measured as an intermediary variable, because it is also seen as an individual personality characteristic. For this factor, we used a six-item, 7-point Likert-type summated ratings scale measuring the degree to which a person is oriented toward possessing goods and money as a means of personal happiness and social progress. The measure originates from a dissertation published by Moschis in 1981 and the scale was self-administered along with other measures in the studies reported by Moschis (1981) as well as Carlson and Grossbart (1988) and Walsh (1991). High scores on the scale indicate that respondents are very oriented toward accumulating material things, whereas low scores indicate that respondents do not tend to be materialistic. (Carlson and Grossbart, 1988 p.79).

The dependent variables ‘product attitude’, ‘product interests’, ‘product evaluation’ and ‘quality judgment’ were measured by sequentially the scales of Maheswaran and Sternthal (1990): a sevenpoint semantic differential measuring a consumer’s evaluation of a product, the scale of Srinivasan and Ratchford (1991): a six-item, seven point Likert type measure of the interest a person reports having in some specified product category, the scale of Mano and Oliver (1993): a five-item, seven point semantic differential scale measuring the degree to which one evaluates a product as being exciting and interesting and the scale of Dodds, Monroe and Grewal (1991): a five-item summated rating scale purporting to measure the perceptions of quality that a consumer has about a product he/she is knowledgeable of.

Sample, Procedure and Measures

Our sample consisted of 240 high-school students between the ages of 12 (N=98), 13 (N=94) and 14 (N=48) years old, 44% males and 56% females. We selected this group of young adolescents, because as pointed out earlier, reference group influence becomes very important as children enter their teenage years. Questionnaires were administered to these young adolescents in their classrooms (the first and second year of high school) during the school day. We went to three different schools, one school with general education (Latin, Greek, economics and sciences), (N=122) and two schools with technical and professional education (N=118).

In the same class, the respondents received the same version of the texts. After receiving general instructions about the study and specific instructions about the scales, the texts were read aloud, because it was very important that the respondents clearly understood the essence of the text. After reading this text, the respondents were given the opportunity and time to fill in the questionnaire. First they had to fill in their age, gender and education level. The next four questions were a manipulation check. The respondents were asked some questions regarding the product category (luxurious or not) and whether they used the product privately or publicly. After these questions, the main variables (see research design and stimuli) were questioned. 60 respondents received text version 1, 67 received version 2, 59 received version 3 and 54 received version 4. Results of the manipulation check show that 40,4% of the respondents answered ‘more agree than not agree’, 25% answered ‘agree’ and 14,6% answered totally agree’ on the question ‘Do you consider this product (iPhone or iMac) as a luxury product? So it is clear that almost 80% see the iPhone or the iMac more ore less as a luxury product. When they were asked if they use or would use the product especially at home, 23,4% of the respondents for the iPhone answered ‘totally not agree’, 33,1% answered ‘not agree’ and 26,6% answered ‘more not agree than agree’. So we have a cumulative percent of 83,1% of the total answers who weren’t agree with the statement.

When they were asked whether they use or should use the iPhone with their friends, at school or in a youth club, 29% agreed and 38,7 % were totally agree. So almost 67 % stated that the iPhone is used especially outside, with friends. When the respondents for the iMac computer were asked if they use or would use the product especially at home 34,5% were agree and 47,8% were totally agree with the statement (total cumulative percent of 82,3% stated the iMac as a private product). And 87,6% stated that the iMac isn’t often used outside, with friends, at school or in youth clubs (18,6% totally not agree, 50,4 not agree and 18,6% more not agree than agree). So for the study, the iPhone can be considered as a public luxury product and the iMac as a private luxury product.

Analysis and Results

Before measuring the hypotheses, a reliability analysis of the scales, used in the questionnaire, was conducted. The construct reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) of ‘productattitude’ was 0,843, of ‘productevaluation’ it was 0,874, of ‘productinterest’ it was 0,874, and of ‘productquality’ it was ‘0,781’. For this last scale, the item ‘productdurable’ was deleted, because the reliability augmented when this item was deleted. For the ‘materialism’ scale Cronbach’s alpha was 0,755 and for the susceptibility to reference group influence scale (suscept) Cronbach’s alpha was 0,873. This ‘suscept’ scale was split up into ‘susceptnorm’ (susceptibility to normative influences) where Cronbach’s alpha was 0,830 and ‘susceptinfo’ (susceptibility to informational influence) where Cronbach’s alpha was 0,701. We can conclude that all these scales are reliable (Cronbach’s alpha >0,70)

To test hypotheses 1 and 2 an ANOVA analysis was run. H1a en H2a predicted a significant difference between the four category independent variable ‘VERSION’ (with the categories ‘iphonefriends’, iphoneparents’, ‘imacfriends’ and ‘imacparents’) and product attitude. When looking at the means, it is clear that ‘iphonefriends’ (5,8194) and ‘imacparents’(5,7840) seem to influence the product attitude the most. A significant main effect of VERSION on productattitude was observed (F=9,115, p=0,000). So H1a and H2a can be accepted: peers have a stronger influence towards the attitudes of public luxuries and parents have a stronger influence on the attitudes towards private luxuries. To test H1b, H1c, H1d and H2b, H2c, H2d, the same analysis was done. In Table 2, the results of the ANOVA tests are summarized.

These results conclude that the influence of the individuals’ peers on the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of the iPhone is stronger than the influence of the individuals’ parents. On the other hand, the influence of the parents on the attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of the iMac is stronger than the influence of the individuals’ peers. All these effects are significant. There are significant differences between VERSION and the individuals’ product attitudes (F=9,115, p=0,000), product evaluations (F=22,202, p=0,000), product interests (F=9,496, p=0,000) and productquality (F=3,654, p=0,013). Hypotheses 1 and 2 are accepted.

For hypothesis 3 the significance of the effects of the ‘susceptibility of the respondents to normative reference group influence (susceptnorm)’ and ‘the susceptibility of the respondents to informational reference group influence (suscetpinfo)’ on the four dependent variables (productatttitude, productevaluation, productinterest and productquality) are explored.

Because ‘susceptnorm’ and

‘susceptinfo’ are continuous variables, a median split was done, so the variables were dichotomized on the basis of the median. The variables NSusceptnorm (1=low, 2=high) and NSusceptinfo (1=low, 2=high) were created. .

T-tests measured if there are significant effects of NSusceptnorm and

NSusceptinfo on the four dependent variables. Table 3 gives an overview of the results.

In table 3, the marginal means of the variable ‘Nsusceptnorm’ show that respondents who have a high level of susceptibility to normative reference group influence have a better attitude towards, evaluation of and interest in luxury products. All these differences in means are significant (p<0,05). But there is no significant effect (p=1,098) for the level of susceptibility to normative reference group influence for the quality judgment of luxury products.

The marginal means of the variable ‘NSusceptinfo’ show that respondents who have a high level of susceptibility to informational reference group influences have a better attitude towards, evaluation of and interest in and quality judgments of luxury products. All these differences are significant (p<0,05). There may be concluded that hypothesis 3 is accepted, except for the susceptibility to normative reference group influences for quality judgments of luxury products(H3d). All the other parts of hypothesis 3 (H3a, H3b, H3c and H3d for informational influences) are significant.

For hypothesis 4 an interaction effect between VERSION and the variables ‘susceptibility to normative reference influences’ (NSusceptnorm) and ‘ susceptibility to informational reference influences’ (NSusceptinfo) is predicted for the four dependent variables. A 2 factor Anova test explored if there is an significant interaction effect between the text VERSION (iphonefriends, iphoneparents, imacfriends, imacparents) and the susceptibility to normative reference influence on the one hand and the susceptibility to informational reference influence on the other hand for the ‘productattitude’, ‘productevaluation’, ‘productinterest’ and ‘productquality’. In table 4, the results are summarized.

There is a clear difference in quality judgment of the products. Respondents who have read version 2 and version 4, and who have a high level of susceptibility to informational reference group influence, qualified the luxury products higher than the other respondents. Especially for the privately consumed luxury product, the difference is most clear. So hypothesis 4 only applies to the susceptibility to informational reference group influence for the respondents’ quality judgments of luxury products (H4d).

But when looking at the estimated marginal means of the dependent variables, caused by the interaction effects, a tendency is noticed that supports the hypothesis 4. Respondents with a high level of susceptibility to normative reference group influences seem to be stronger influenced by their peers in their attitudes towards (M=6,155), evaluations of (M=5,871), interests in (M=4,887) and quality judgments of (M=5,366) the iPhone. The same counts for the hypothesis for respondents with a high level of informational reference group susceptibility. They seem to be stronger influenced by their parents in their attitudes towards (M=6,015), evaluations of (M=5,871) and interests in (M=4,583) the iMac. But all these interaction effects are not significant, so hypothesis 4 must be rejected (except the last part).

For hypothesis 5 the significance of the effects of the ‘Materialism’ variable on the four dependent variables are explored. T-tests measured if there are significant differences of the dependent variables according to the degree of materialism. The variable ‘Materialism’ is also dichotomized (with a median split) into NMaterialism (1= low, 2=high). So respondents with category 1 (lower than the median) are not materialistic, respondents with category 2 (higher than the median) are materialistic. Table 6 shows the marginal means of the variable ‘NMaterialism’ on the 4 dependent variables:

In table 6, the marginal means of the variable ‘Materialism’ show that respondents who have a high degree of materialism, have a better attitude towards, interest in and quality judgment of luxury products. All these differences are significant (p<0,05). But there is no significant effect (p=0,419) of the degree of materialism of the respondents on the evaluation of the luxury products. Hypothesis 5 can be accepted, except for the effect of materialism on the evaluation of luxury products. The effects on the other dependent variables (productattitude, productinterest, productquality) are significant.

To explore hypothesis 6, the interaction effects between Materialism and VERSION are measured with a 2 factor ANOVA test. The results are summarized in table 7.

But when looking at the estimated marginal means, a tendency is noticed that respondents who are high materialistic seem to be influenced stronger by their peers in their attitudes towards (M=6,062), evaluations of (M=5,615), interests in (M=4,426) and quality judgments of (M=5,009) the public luxury product. But these interaction effects are not significant, so hypothesis 6 is rejected.

Discussion

The purpose of this study was to extend previous researches and findings of the reference group influence concept. The important influences of two reference groups of individuals (peers and parents) were tested to see if the results for the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products are linked to similar results mainly done for purchase intentions and buyer behaviour for all types of products (Chidlers & Rao, 1993). The most important element of this research is the difference between peer-based influences and familiar-based influences.

The influences of these two types of reference groups were expected to vary across product attitudes, interests, evaluations and judgments depending on whether the luxury product was publicly or privately consumed.

The premise of this study was that peer influences are stronger for publicly consumed luxuries and the parental influences are stronger for privately consumed luxuries, what is in line with previous similar studies on consumer behaviour (Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Bearden and Etzel, 1982; Park and Lessig, 1977; Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993). The peer group and parents group influences were measured for subjects between the age of 12 and 14 years old and the first results of this research match with the previous findings of Chidlers and Rao (1993), who measured this reference group influences for high school students.

The findings of this research supported the hypothesis that the influence of the individuals’ peers on the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in evaluations of and quality judgments of the publicly consumed luxury product (iPhone) should be stronger than the influence of the individuals’ parents. Also the hypothesis that ‘the influence of the individuals’ parents on the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of the privately consumed luxury product (iMac) should be stronger than the influence of the individuals ’ peers’ is accepted.

Other literature argued that interpersonal influence manifests itself through either normative or informational influences (Clark and Goldsmith, 2006). For this research, the susceptibility to reference group influence of our respondents was measured on the basis of a distinction between normative and informational social influences. According to the findings of Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel (1989) much of the third hypothesis of this research was accepted. The results showed that respondents who were more susceptible to normative and/or informational reference group influences had better attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of luxury products than respondents who were not susceptible to normative and/or informational reference group influences.

But one part of this analysis was remarkable. Respondents who were more susceptible to normative reference group influences didn’t have better quality judgments of the luxury products. This can be explained by the differences pointed out earlier between normative and informational influences. According to Cohen and Golden (1972), product quality judgments may prove to be an especially fertile setting within which informational social influence is likely to operate. And when ‘normative social influence is defined as ‘the influence to conform with certain expectations held by others’, it is clear that quality judgments are obvious related to informational social influences and not to the normative influences (Pincus and Waters, 1977). So this deviating result is not that inexplicable.

Because susceptibility to reference group influence is a personal characteristic of an individual, the interaction effect between the influence of peers or parents, the product type (public, private) and the normative or informational susceptibility to reference group influence, for the attitudes, interests, evaluations and quality judgments of luxury products were measured. According to the studies of Bearden, Netemeyer and Teel (1989), combined with previous insights, predictions can be made that respondents who are more susceptible to informational reference group influence will be stronger influenced by their parents in their attitudes towards interests in evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products than by their peers. Respondents who are more susceptible to normative reference group influence will be stronger influenced by their peers in their attitudes towards interests in evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products than by their parents.

The results of the 2-factor Anova tests show that there were generally no significant interaction effects between the susceptibility to normative or informational reference group influence and the version of the text (peer/parents influence and public/private luxury products).

The only significant interaction that is investigated is the interaction between the degree of susceptibility to informational reference group influence and the version of the text on the quality judgment of luxury products. Results show that there was a clear difference in quality judgment of the products. For the parental influences, the respondents who had a high level of susceptibility to informational reference group influence qualified the luxury products higher than the other respondents. Especially for the privately consumed luxury product (the iMac), the difference was most clear. These findings only show that parents have a more informational influence on luxury product judgments, especially when the products are consumed privately. This comes into accord with previous expectations. Although the estimated marginal means of the other expected interaction effects have a tendency in the right direction, the rest of the hypothesis must be rejected, because of the nonsignificant findings. Further research with more respondents should be able to solve this problem of significance.

Understanding the connection between conspicuous consumption and materialism is necessary if one wishes to evaluate luxury consumption (Ahuia and Wong, 1995). Because of these findings, the last hypotheses, where the personal characteristic ‘materialism’ was seen as a intermediary variable between reference group influence and the attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products were measured. Similar to other ‘materialism studies’ (Richins and Dawson, 1992), three findings of the first test were positive. Respondents who had a high degree of materialism, had a better attitude towards, interest in and quality judgment of luxury products. But there was no significant influence of materialism on the evaluations of the luxury products. Also the last hypothesis was rejected.

There are no significant interaction effects between the degree of materialism of the respondents and the version of the text (peer/parents influence and public/private luxury products) on the product attitudes, evaluations, interests and quality judgments. Although the estimated marginal means of the other expected interaction effects have a tendency in the right direction, the hypothesis must be rejected, because of the non-significant findings.

The available evidence for these last results indicates that the materialism scale may not be reliable or valuable. This could be because of the problem of the social desirability of the respondents. When answering questions like ‘money is the most important thing in my life’, the respondents could have answered in a way that will be viewed favourably by others, instead of answering what they really think. (See limitations). Again, further research with more respondents, in another setting should be able to solve this problem of significance and social desirability.

Limitations

Several limitations should be considered. The two luxury products that were used in the texts were chosen on the basis of a pretest. A first limitation of this research is that the two products, respectively the iPhone as a public luxury product and the iMac as a private luxury product were chosen of a nonexhaustive list of luxury products. So the iPhone and iMac were rather chosen subjectively. There are a lot of other luxury products that could be used for the research.

Second, the study is necessarily limited by the constructs measured. Certainly other dimensions of reference group influence and personal characteristics may be related to luxury product attitudes and evaluations.

Also the generalizability of the study is limited. The fact that the sample consisted of young adolescents, high school students between 12 and 14 years old, limits the external validity of the results. Other studies (Childers and Rao, 1993) pointed out that the results of this reference group studies may differ if another segment of the population (adults or children) is studied. Students can reflect another attitude towards luxury products than little children or adults, so the reference group influences of these groups can vary a lot. However, because this study fundamentally tested theory of young adolescents, the sample was appropriate.

A fourth limitation is the possible tendency of respondents who were questioned in a classroom, with the teacher in front of it, to reply in a manner that will be viewed favourably and acceptably by others. Research (Nederhof, 2006) shows that responses of children in classroom achievement situations will be more impressionable for this social desirability, because they want to fill in the answer that is viewed favourably by others (here by the teachers who stand in front of the class). Especially for the ‘materialism’ scale this effect could have been a problem for this research, what leads to less significant results.

Further Research

Additional research is necessary to provide a more complete view of reference group influence than the preliminary one offered here. Several ways for extension should be considered.

First, future research should examine the impact of reference group influences on not only product but also brand-level attitudes, in addition to the product-level attitudes explored in this study. It is quite possible that peer and parental influences may be more pervasive, but may develop later, for brand decisions than for product decisions (Bearden and Etzel, 1982). Therefore a lot of future research can also be conducted across a wide range of age groups.

Second, additional future research should also analyse other personal dimensions of consumer susceptibility to reference group influence, such as self-esteem, fear, social independence, tendency to conform, self-monitoring, etc… People with a high degree of self-esteem for example can react on a totally different way on reference group influences than people with a low self-esteem.

Third, it would be interesting to examine the influence of other types of referents on the individual’s product attitudes and evaluations. Two possible types are distant referents, such as aspirational figures (sport heroes, entertainment figures…) and progeny, that is, children who exercise a reverse intergenerational influence on their parents. These types of influence are likely to vary across product categories, and a lot of the theoretical approach should be appropriate for addressing these issues.

Finally, further research can offer useful insights on how reference groups affect firm behaviour and marketing strategies. Firms adopt various strategies to handle reference group effects. The influence that peers and parents have on the consumer’s product and brand evaluations pose several marketing challenges (Amaldoss and Jain, 2008). Future research could consider a dynamic model to investigate how reference group effects impact consumer and firm behaviour over time. It should be useful to understand how for example new products can be used to manage reference group effects.

Conclusion

The results of this study provide basic insights and guidelines for practitioners who create marketing strategies based on the attitudes of young adolescents to luxury products. The findings are also useful for further research within the domain of reference group influences and consumer behaviour.

This study concentrated on two important reference groups who have a lot of influences on a young adolescent’s attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products. These two reference groups are the parents and the peers of the individual. Their influence differs according the type of product. For a publicly consumed luxury product, the iPhone was used in the study, for a privately consumed product, the iMac was used. Peers have a clear influence on the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of the iPhone, while the individuals’ parents rather have more influence on the individuals’ attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of the iMac.

Some personality characteristics of young adolescents were also measured. Respondents with a high degree of susceptibility to normative and/or informational reference group influence or a high level of materialism have better attitudes towards, interests in, evaluations of and quality judgments of luxury products. When looking at the interaction effects of these personality variables, only a strong clear difference in quality judgment of the products is noticed. For privately consumed products (the iMac), the influence of the individuals’ parents on the quality judgments of the iMac will be higher when they are more susceptible to informational reference group influence. Other interactions weren’t significant enough. Also the interaction with the degree of materialism had no significant results. Further research should make this clear.

Considering the findings presented here, it would appear to be important to consider peer and parental influence in consumer education efforts. Increasing children’s and young adolescents’ awareness by discussing the positive and negative aspects of this type of influence would seem to be important in improving the critical thinking skills of young and developing consumers.

kwaliteitsoordelen over luxe producten Heel wat consumentenonderzoek heeft de nadruk gelegd op de invloed van referentiegroepen (Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Bearden and Etzel, 1982; Park and Lessig, 1977; Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993, Moore, Wilkie and Alder, 2002; Escalas and Bettman, 2003). Bovendien gebruiken reclamemakers de ‘referentie groep’ concepten in heel wat campagnes om zo consumenten te overtuigen om producten en merken te kopen (Amaldoss and Jain, 2008).

Het is belangrijk om na te gaan welke referentiegroepen invloed hebben op welke doelgroepen en voor welke doeleinden. Heel wat experimenteel onderzoek bij individuen heeft aangetoond welke invloed bepaalde referentiegroepen hebben op de aankoopbeslissingen en consumptie van bepaalde producten. (Chidlers and Rao, 1992; Bearden and Etzel, 1982; Bachmann, John and Rao, 1993).

De invloed die een referentiegroep kan uitoefenen op het consumptiegedrag van een individu is afhankelijk van het type product die het individu zich wil aanschaffen en de plaats waar het product geconsumeerd wordt (Chidlers and Rao, 1992). Eerder onderzoek toonde zo het verschil aan tussen luxeproducten en noodzakelijke producten en tussen publieke en private producten.

Het doel van deze studie is na te gaan hoe jong adolescenten (tussen 12 en 14 jaar) vatbaar zijn voor de invloed van twee belangrijke referentiegroepen, namelijk de ouders en de vrienden. In tegenstelling tot eerdere studies, wordt enkel de invloed op luxe producten gemeten voor vier afhankelijke variabelen, namelijk de attitudes tegenover, de interesses in, de evaluaties van en de kwaliteitsbeoordelingen over luxeproducten.

240 jonge adolescenten ontvingen één van de vier gemanipuleerde tekstjes en zo werd ofwel de invloed van de vrienden of de invloed van de ouders nagegaan op deze afhankelijke variabelen voor ofwel een publiek luxe product (de iPhone) of voor een privaat luxe product (de iMac). Uit de resultaten bleek dat vrienden significant meer invloed hebben op de attitudes tegenover, de interesses in, de evaluaties van en de kwaliteitsbeoordelingen van de respondenten tegenover de iPhone, terwijl ouders eerder de attitudes tegenover, de interesses in, de evaluaties van en de kwaliteitsbeoordelingen over de iMac beïnvloeden.

Ook werd het persoonlijkheidskenmerk ‘vatbaarheid voor referentiegroep invloed’ gemeten en de resultaten tonen dat respondenten die meer vatbaar zijn voor normatieve en/of informationele referentiegroep invloed, betere attitudes hebben tegenover, interesses in, evaluaties van en kwaliteitsbeoordelingen voor luxe producten. Er werd ook een interactie-effect vastgesteld tussen de invloed van de ouders en de vatbaarheid voor informationele referentiegroep invloed van de respondent, voor de kwaliteitsoordelen over de iMac. Geen andere significante interactie-effecten werden vastgesteld, maar de resultaten tonen wel dat er een tendens is naar meer interactie tussen de invloed van de vrienden/ouders, het soort luxeproduct en de vatbaarheid voor referentiegroep invloed op de afhankelijke variabelen. Maar dit moet nog dieper onderzocht worden.

De andere persoonlijkheidsvariabele, materialisme, heeft ook een significant effect op de afhankelijke variabelen. Jonge adolescenten die meer materialistisch zijn dan andere, hebben betere attitudes tegenover, interesses in, evaluaties van en kwaliteitsoordelen over luxe producten. Een interactieeffect tussen interactie tussen de

invloed van de vrienden/ouders, het soort luxeproduct en

materialisme op de afhankelijke variabelen werd niet vastgesteld, hoewel er opnieuw een tendens in de positieve richting aanwezig vastgesteld is. Dit moet tevens door verder onderzoek grondiger onderzocht worden.
