Offshore Shipbrokers Ltd (OSL) says the sport market in the North Sea continues to improve, and November was undoubtedly the best month of 2004, with rates for PSV fixtures reaching record levels and AHTS rates equally buoyant.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2005 – 008 The company said November got off to a good start continuing on from the tight market seen during October with rates fluctuating around the £15,000-£20,000 level. By the middle ofthe month however things had tightened even further with rates now reaching and exceeding the £40,000 level. December started well, but by the end of the first week rate levels had fallen considerably to around the £7500 level. This situation lasted for several days until availability tightened once again and rates started to climb. Rates then rose to hit the £50,000 level for rig moves. OSL said it expects things to remain reasonably tight into January. "Confidence is also beginning to grown in the term market with rates for recent term charters now beginning to creep up in response topredicted activity," said OSL. "Requirements commencing during the summer months of 2005 are attracting an additional premium due to the expected limited availability."

THE ITF has issuing another warning regarding crewing organisations in Nigeria.
An ITF spokesman told Fairplay that Tapinok Consulting Nigeria and Nova Marines, giving their locations as Port Harcourt, are offering seafaring jobs in return for between $500 and $800 and a copy of a passport. Sample job offers received by the ITF have been passed to Fairplay, which can confirm that no ships match the description and data given. The ITF is again warning anyone looking for work not to pay any fees in advance. It is illegal to ask for money up front, and it is the best indicator that you are about to lose it, said the spokesman. In July last year, Fairplay uncovered a Panama-based organisation behind a series of suspect Internet sites offering seafaring and offshore jobs upon payment of fees. The Panama Maritime Authority has carried out an investigation and is seeking help from foreign parties to step forward with evidence of wrongdoing.

Stricken ferry refloated by tugs A ferry which ran aground at Cairnryan Harbour in the west of Scotland has been refloated after being stuck for more than 30 hours. Two tugs hauled the P&O car ferry off the rocks with the help of the high tide at about 1100 GMT on Sunday. The ferry which had set sail from Larne, County Antrim, ran aground in winds of up to 100 miles per hour at about 0700 GMT on Saturday. Forty three passengers and 57 crew had to spend the night on the ferry. With one line tied to the bow and another to the stern, the tugs which had travelled down the River Clyde from Greenock managed to move the ferry into deeper waters. The operation to free the European Highlander took less than 30 minutes to complete.Once it was freed, the ferry had to sail about 100 metres before docking at the terminal. An initial inspection of the hull carried out by Maritime and Coastguard Agency divers found limited damage. The ferry has been taken to Liverpool for a full dry dock examination. A reduced service is operating between Larne and Cairnryan. 'Big squall'
Top : File photo of the EUROPEAN HIGHLANDER – photo : Rob de Visser © Samuel Esdale, 42, a haulage contractor from Randalstown in County Antrim, said he was out on deck when he noticed the boat was struggling to dock in a "big squall", but said there was no crash. "There were no bumps or bangs of any sort, nobody fell over, nothing moved and that was her for the rest of day - docked," he said.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2005 – 008 His wife Jayne said no-one on the ferry was panicking. "We were fed, had duvets and pillows - they were very good to us really," she said. `"But no alcohol, just for safety reasons in case they had to take us off another way." Martin O'Donnell, 23, a car breaker from Dungloe in County Donegal complained about the lack of information given to passengers by the ferry company. He said "a lot of us were very upset about the bar", which closed at 0600 GMT on Saturday, though he added: "It could have been a lot worse." A P&O spokeswoman said passengers were kept as comfortable as possible "given the circumstances". "There was food and drink available and they were kept informed. The ship captain himself came down to speak to the passengers individually," she said. She said the bar had been shut for "safety reasons". "Although there was no danger, we do that in emergency situations," she said. \

India, Iran sign LNG deal INDIA and Iran have finally agreed a price for LNG, and India signed an agreement to import 7.5M tonnes from Iran from 2009 under an oilfield-for-LNG deal. As part of the agreement, Tehran will give Indian firms developmental rights at two producing oil fields. A long conflict over the price had delayed the bilateral deal for many months. Iran will now sell LNG to India at a price linked to Brent crude oil, and as per the formula, New Delhi would pay $1.2 plus 0.065 of the Brent crude average, with an upper ceiling of $31 a barrel. The LNG price for the first three years of supplies would be fixed at $2.97 a barrel, to make the imports competitive with Qatar price of $2.53. ONGC Videsh will get a 20% share in the development of Iran's largest onshore oil field, Yadavaran, and 100% of the Jufeyr field.
CCU, Klaveness in contract venture
A NEW ship and contract management joint venture has been set up by Abu Dhabi-based dry bulk operator Combined Cargo UAE (CCU) and Torvald Klaveness Group in Norway. The company, Bulktransfer, is 36.15% owned by CCU and 63.85% by Klaveness. It will manage CCU’ s five vessels and its commercial contracts. "[Bulktransfer] has 100% contract coverage for our vessels until the end of 2006, says CCU general manager Harald Lone. The creation of Bulktransfer, incorporated in Liberia, follows Klaveness’s exit as a direct shareholder in CCU. The Norwegian firm was one of the founding shareholders with a 24% stake in CCU, which was set up in 1996.The new structure will allow us to consolidate our current operation and streamline our ownership into one holding company. Consolidating the ships into one holding company will spread the operational risk between CCU and Klaveness, said Lone.

SanDisk Marries Flash with USB Has this ever happened to you? You've just snapped some great pictures, and you want to quickly transfer them to your laptop to e-mail them to friends. But you left your camera's cable somewhere else. SanDisk wants to make that problem go away, with an innovative new technology it rolled out at CES this year—an SD card with a pop-up USB 2.0 connector built in. The version SanDisk showed off turns a 1-gigabyte SD card into a USB memory device. The device is deceptively simple: The SD card itself is hinged and split right in the middle. Folding the back half up 90 degrees exposes a flat, non-standard USB 2.0 connector, which can then slide into any standard USB port. The card even includes a tiny flashing LED light that blinks when it's accessed while inserted in a USB slot. The design seems fairly robust, although only time will tell whether the hinges can withstand hundreds or thousands of flips. SanDisk expects to ship the SB/USB combo card sometime in the first quarter of 2005, and will provide more details in February.
