The score until today : 39950 Euro EVENTS, INCIDENTS & OPERATIONS Sea surges kill thousands in Asia Thousands of people have been killed across south and east Asia in massive sea surges triggered by the strongest earthquake in the world for 40 years. Villages have been swamped and homes destroyed after the 8.9-magnitude quake, the fifth strongest since 1900. At least 1,000 died in Sri Lanka and a similar number were killed in India. Casualty figures are rising and deaths have also been reported in Thailand and on Sumatra in Indonesia, thought to be near the tremor's epicentre. Exact figures for casualties are hard to confirm but hundreds of people are also said to be missing in India's and Sri Lanka's coastal regions. DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 Sri Lanka's President Chandrika Kumaratunga has declared a national disaster, and the military has been deployed to help rescue efforts for the 500,000 people thought affected on the island. High sea waters have also struck tourist resorts on the coast of Thailand, reportedly killing scores of people. The low-lying Indian Ocean islands of the Maldives have also been severely flooded but there is no word yet on casualties. Thousands have meanwhile been displaced from their homes by high tides in Indonesia. An Indian Coast Guard helicopter lifts the body of a victim who was killed by tidal waves at the Marina Beach in Madras, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. A massive tidal wave triggered by an earthquake in Indonesia slammed into several parts of southern India Sunday killing at least 286 people, most of them in Tamil Nadu state. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia is the largest in the world in 40 years Panicked people reportedly fled their homes in the towns of Medan and Banda Aceh, the capitals of two of Sumatra's provinces. Indonesia's geological position - along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - makes it prone to earthquakes and volcanoes. Electricity and telephone networks in the area have stopped working, making it difficult to confirm the extent of the damage, the BBC's Rachel Harvey in Jakarta reports. Indonesia's worst-hit region appears to be Aceh, a strife-torn province on Sumatra's northernmost tip, which has seen heavy clashes between government soldiers and separatist rebels. A view of the damage caused by a tsunami at a beach in Phuket, about 535 miles south of Bangkok, Dec. 26, 2004. The wave was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean and it tossed cars around like toys on Thailand's southern tourist playground on Sunday and swept into luxury hotels on Phuket Island.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 Several houses in the towns of Banda Aceh and Lhokseumawe are said to have been damaged or washed away in flash floods. A witness interviewed by a local radio station reported seeing nine bodies in Banda Aceh, where part of the town's largest hotel is said to have collapsed. "The ground was shaking for a long time," another witness told the radio station. In November, 29 people died when an earthquake struck Indonesia's eastern province of Papua.
CARNIVAL LATEST COMPLETED MAIDEN VOYAGE Carnival´s cruising newest ship ended her maiden voyage with a 7-day cruise from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean. The Carnival Valor is the 3rd Conquest class, 110,000 grt vessel. Prior festivities included the naming of the ship by Katie Couric, NBC television personality, and a familiarization cruise for agents and invited quests. She became the largest Carnival ship to be home ported in Miami. This brings the "Fun Ship" fleet back up to 20 ships. Jubilee was moved from the Carnival stable two months ago. The namesake `valor' theme is carried throughout the ship as part of Joe Farcus´ designing. Below is a sample of one of the barrooms. The Bronx Sports Bar celebrates one of America´s most famous sports teams, the New York Yankees. The décor re-creates fabled Yankee stadium with white arches and grillwork, and red, white and blue bunting often found at baseball games. Each table in the bar has a piece of a number-four uniform, like that of Baseball Hall of Fame member Lou Gehrig, encased in resin on the tabletop. Banquettes resemble baseballs with white leather and red stitches, while bar stools and table bases resemble sawed off baseball bats. The carpet is designed to resemble the green grass of a baseball field. This "Fun Ship" boasts 22 bars and lounges aboard.
Weather makes oil cleanup slippery Harsh winds, huge waves in Bering Sea hamper salvage ships
Punishing winds and mammoth swells shoved the freighter Selendang Ayu hard ashore in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska two weeks ago, cracking the ship in two, leading to the deaths of six crewmen and setting off an oil spill originally estimated at more than 40,000 gallons. Now the Bering Sea's harsh weather has sharply tilted the bow half of the freighter and almost fully sank it late last week in a swirl of 35 mph winds, 16-foot waves and blowing snow. In the process, up to 316,000 additional gallons of oil are thought to have spilled. Petty Officer Sara Francis, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, said the weather that sank the bow came up sometime Wednesday afternoon to midday Thursday and also halted cleanup and salvage efforts. "It chased all of the response vessels back here into port because it was so bad," Francis said, speaking from Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island, not far from where the Malaysian ship ran aground. The Selendang Ayu had been bound for China carrying more than 66,000 tons of soybeans and 460,000 gallons of fuel when its engines failed. Efforts by a rescue tug to stop the 738-foot freighter's drift failed in high winds and rough seas, and on Dec. 8, the Selendang Ayu grounded just off Unalaska Island, which is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 The Coast Guard was able to rescue most of the ship's crew using helicopters, but one helicopter crashed into the sea during the effort. Three Coast Guardsmen from that helicopter were pulled from the chilly waters near the ship, but six crewmen who had just been taken off the vessel were lost and are presumed dead. Those assessing the environmental impact of the spill have so far found one dead otter and 20 dead birds, said Linda Giguere, spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. An additional 20 oiled birds have been taken to Anchorage for treatment, Giguere said. Crab pots have been set in the area in an effort to determine, by Monday, whether it is safe for the local tanner crab season to begin as usual in January. Officials worry that, depending on where the newly spilled oil moves, it could interfere with the fishing and crabbing seasons in other areas as well. Francis said that flights over the wreck on Friday did not spot any large slicks and that the tumultuous seas might be helping to break down the oil. The stern half of the freighter currently sits upright, only partly submerged, where it grounded. Its fuel tanks still hold close to 90,000 gallons of oil and more than 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel, which salvage workers hope to begin removing when weather permits.
Celebrity liable for waiter attack
US-based Celebrity Cruises has been found liable for a sexual assault by a crew member on a passenger, in a decision which could have wide-reaching implications for the cruise industry.
The US Court of Appeals for the eleventh circuit has overturned an earlier ruling stating Celebrity was not responsible for the incident, due to the nature of the employment agreement between the company and the crewmember, a waiter. As a result of the decision, a federal jury award of $1m to the victim has now been reinstated. The assault took place on a port call in Bermuda during a 1999 cruise of Celebrity’ s 1,366-passenger Zenith (built 1992). In a decision this week, the appeals court held that the cruise line was a common carrier and as such was strictly liable for the safety of its passengers, without regard for who employed the crew member that committed the attack. Cruise lines have generally tried to defend their liability in such cases. Court papers show the victim, who was in her twenties, was assaulted by a waiter, a Turkish national, who had served her during the trip from New York to Bermuda. The incident took place ashore but within sight of the vessel and during a port call, described by the court as an ‘ essential part of the cruise experience’ . The problem of cruiseship sexual assaults first came to the fore in 1999 when Carnival Corp was ordered by a Miami court to publish a list of attacks reported in the previous five years. The result of 109 assaults shocked the industry. Celebrity Cruises is a division of Royal Caribbean.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 The Kure Maritime Safety Authority has sent papers to local prosecutors alleging that Masuo Hamada was fast asleep when his 500-dwt ship Shintsunetoyo Maru (built 2002) hit the Osaki Kamishima shoreline, demolishing three houses. The Kure authority's investigations says the ship was on automatic pilot at the time of the accident at 00:02 on 4 September. It also says the master had fallen asleep for "10 minutes". It appears there was no additional watchkeeper on the bridge at the time of the accident. The residents of the destroyed houses escaped serious injury, although a 70-year-old man dislocated his shoulder when he was thrown out of bed. The Shintsunetoyo Maru incident bears remarkable similarity to the infamous Jambo (built 1990) accident off the Scottish coast last year. The 3,500-dwt general cargoship grounded as the watchkeeper slept. The subsequent Maritime Accident Investigation Bureau (MAIB) probe has sparked a full scale UK government investigation into manning levels and fatigue. The UK report claims fatigue was by far the largest cause of groundings and collisions and that manning levels and crewing regulations need to be reviewed by the IMO.

USS Abraham Lincoln Makes Port Call in HK The USS Abraham Lincoln and three other ships from its strike group pulled into Hong Kong port Friday morning to get replenishment and spend the Christmas holidays. The aircraft carrier, with more than 70 planes on board, will stay in Hong Kong for three to four days, said Doug Crowder, commander of Abraham Lincoln Strike Group. "We have a flexible schedule due to weather concerns," he told reporters of a media tour. There are a total of 6,500 crew members on the four ships, including 5,000 on USS Abraham Lincoln. Most of sailors came to Hong Kong for the first time, and each of them will get to the shore over the next a couple of days, said Crowder. "It is a holiday period. I imagine most of people will spend quite a lot of money here, and more important to develop some good memories of Hong Kong," he said. For him, it is the eighth time to visit Hong Kong. "I came to Hong Kong for the first time in 1975, almost 30 years ago. I'm so amazed to come to the harbor to see this beautiful city." Left : The ABRAHAM LINCOLN seen her in the Western Pacific December 21st enroute Hong Kong Photo : coll Piet Sinke He said during the several days, the soldiers will see sights, walk around the city, go to restaurants and do some shopping. According to Captain Kendall L. Card, USS Abraham Lincoln is estimated to spend about US$250,000 a day in Hong Kong. USS Abraham Lincoln is America's fifth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The ship was named in honor of United States' 16th president and is the second ship in the US Navy to bear the name. The nuclear-powered ship is 333 meters long, and its flight deck width is about 77 meters. Its full load displacement is approximately 100,000 tons.
Alexandria Returns to SUBASE Following Circumnavigation of Globe The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757) returned to Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) New London Dec. 10 following a deployment that circumnavigated the globe. Alexandria departed SUBASE June 11 and transited under the Arctic ice to the Pacific Ocean. While this is the first transit of this type for an improved Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN 571) was the first submarine to make such a transit, going from the Pacific to Atlantic Ocean in 1958. DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 the golden anniversary of that ship's commissioning, that feat held the fascination of Alexandria's captain during his own transit. "I kind of kept tabs of their track," said Cmdr. Thomas Kearney, Alexandria's commanding officer. "I don't know the exact speed that they went, but I think we beat their speed record and we'll have one of the fastest under-ice transits ever." After entering the Pacific Ocean, the crew enjoyed port visits in Japan, Singapore and Guam, intermixed with their training and operations. It was in Guam where some crew members had the opportunity to reunite with their spouses. The spouses who flew out to meet their husbands followed virtually the same path as the submarine. "That was exciting that the submarine went under the North Pole and we went over it," said Lorene Hendricks, wife of Chief Machinist's Mate (SS) Steven Hendricks. "It was nice to have that break in the deployment so we could see each other," said Emily Thompson, wife of Chief Machinist's Mate (SS) Gary Thompson. "The weather and island were beautiful. We went snorkeling out in the coral reefs. I've never done that before." After the reunions and port visit in the Pacific were complete, Alexandria continued on with her circumnavigation of the globe. They joined the Yokosuka, Japan-based USS Cowpens (CG 63) and USS Gary (FFG 51) in a port visit in Goa, India, before participating in Exercise Malabar with the Indian navy. Left the USS Alexandria (SSN 757) pulls into Goa, India, October 3rd 2004 during Exercise Malabar 04. Photo : Coll Piet Sinke Exercise Malabar is a bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability between the two navies while enhancing the cooperative security relationship between India and the United States. The at-sea training included maritime interdiction, surface events, subsurface and air events, as well as personnel exchanges. "Exercise Malabar was great," Kearney said. "We sailed around with three Indian ships and one Indian submarine and did a bunch of different exercises with them. They were a very professional navy and very interested in how we do business." Alexandria's crew also hosted an Indian commander for some of the exercises during Exercise Malabar. "At the end, I asked him what it was like to be on a submarine," Kearney said. "He said the only words he could come up with were, 'It's as if I have gone to the moon.'" Alexandria also made history by becoming the first U.S. nuclear-powered submarine to make a port call in Goa, India. "I got a lot of 'Hunt for Red October' comments while we were there," Kearney said.

After completing Exercise Malabar and their port visit in India, Alexandria transited through the Red Sea, Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea, with stops in Crete and Rota, Spain, then home to SUBASE. After the deployment was over, Alexandria had steamed 37,175 miles in 180 days.
SHIPYARD NEWS Doorstart scheepswerf De Greuns Voormalig directeur ing.
S. Korea Wins Again over Shipbuilding Dispute with EU
South Korea, the world's leading shipbuilding nation, was granted its second substantial win by the WTO in its dispute with the European Union over subsidies to the shipbuilding sector, trade officials here said Friday. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the dispute settlement panel of the World Trade Organization (WTO) sent the ministry an interim report that EU's temporary defensive mechanism (TDM) targeted against Korean shipyards violated Article 23.1 of the WTO's dispute settlement regulations.

Three firms bid for Defence shipbuilding contract Three companies have entered the running to win a $6 billion Defence contract to build three air warfare destroyers. The Melbourne-based Tenix group and Adelaide's ASC Shipbuilding had long been considered the two leading contenders for the contract. But the US-owned Northrop Grumman Ship Systems has emerged as a surprise third bidder. The air warfare destroyers will be one of the biggest Defence projects ever and is likely to reshape the Australian shipbuilding industry.

A FERRY HAPPY LITTLE SEND-OFF Christmas spirit was in the air when the new £5 million ferry Plym II made its first public journey from Torpoint to Devonport. Tamar Bridge and Torpoint ferries general manager David List played Santa as he announced to cheers from passengers that the first crossing would be toll-free. Earlier, Mr List was officially presented with the vessel's safety certificate by Plymouth marine surveyor Simon Judge of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Then it was time for the vessel to take on its first load of vehicles, with six lanes boarding a Torpoint ferry for the first time ever. Also staking his place in history was a cheeky seagull, which hitched a ride across the river on the rear prow. The ferry was noticeably quieter than the old ones, with just minimal clanking from its chains as it set off. The Plym II will take longer to load and unload than the old ferries, but cruises across in just 5.5 minutes, compared with seven minutes at present. The Plym II was driven across by Andrew Cannon, whose father is also a ferry driver. It will be used only when a three-ferry service is running to give the crews time to adjust to it, and for engineers to sort out any teething troubles. The three original ferries are to be scrapped next year. DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 US-based Keystone Shipping has scrapped another vintage tanker, this time for one of the highest scrap-sale prices ever. Sources say the 40,000-dwt, US-flag Chilbar (built 1959), which was built at the Ingalls shipyard, has been sold to India for $461 per ldt or $4.7m. Brokers say some key factors explain the high price: the vessel was built in the US, was US-owned and flagged, had stainless-steel content, was rich in nonferrous content and was well maintained. However, because few ships are being scrapped these days, even average ships are managing to fetch a good price. European Navigation (Elka Shipping) of Greece is said to have sold the 32,000-dwt tanker Makhachkala (built 1976) for demolition in India for $422 per ldt or $3.1m. Earlier this year the company sold two sisterships, the Grozny and Maykop (both built 1975), for scrap. Elka still has three 1970s-built tankers in its fleet, including two more sisterships to the Makhachkala . Last week, there were reports Elka had sold the 45,000-dwt tankers Elka Bene and Elka Baluni (both built 2002) for $90m en bloc but brokers now say there was no deal. Earlier this year Keystone sold the sistership Fredericksburg (built 1958) for scrap. And the drillship Northern Explorer 3 (built 1973) has been sold "as is" to Malaysian buyers for $371 per ldt or $3.4m. The 5,600-dwt bulker Sam (built 1976) has also been sold for scrap. No price has been given.
Kaptanoglu tanker launched with flair The HI Kaptanoglu group of Turkey celebrated a host of special events earlier this month, starting with the launch of the 15,000-dwt Puli , the biggest chemical tanker ever built in the country, in the presence of Prime Minister R Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and some 2,500 other guests. Three other government ministers, 18 members of parliament, including Cengiz Kaptanoglu, who after many years at the helm of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping has moved into the political sphere, and guests from the Turkish shipping industry and other sectors turned out for a full programme. The Puli is the first in a series of four ice-class 1A products/chemical tankers being built for the HI Kaptanoglu group's KS Tankers. The series was designed in co-operation with Delta Marine of Turkey and incorporates a number of innovations. The keel of the second vessel in the series was laid and steel cut for the third unit on the day of the launch. The series is considered to be a new generation of chemical tankers. The ships are designed with twin engines and twin azimuth thrusters, which the company says give excellent manoeuvrability and allow for less tug assistance at many terminals. Also alongside was the 40,000-dwt tanker Barracudas , which was purchased from Trogir Shipyard and taken to Turkey to be converted from a double-bottom/single-hull ship to a double huller. The new vessels are what Cenk Kaptanoglu, general manager of KS Tankers, calls the "first fruits" of the group's newbuilding programme, in which it is investing over $120m. Half of the investment is coming from the group's own capital and the rest is being financed by Denizbank of Turkey and Germany's HSH Nordbank.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 270 Cenk Kaptanoglu says the group hopes to grow its tanker fleet and is close to agreeing an order to build two more 10,000-dwt IMO-II tankers, as well as looking at opportunities to acquire bigger vessels. Haci Ismail Kaptanoglu established his shipping company in 1940 and was later joined by sons Engin, Gunduz and Cengiz. The next generation, including Cenk and his sister, Sadan, is now active in the group. Up to now HI Kaptanoglu has operated dry-bulk tonnage and currently controls six handymax bulkers. It is also one of the consortium that bought out the former state-controlled Turkish Cargo Lines.
