EVENTS, INCIDENTS & OPERATIONS NEDLLOYD STUYVESANT GEDOOPT

Resignations signal change at Minoan Flying Dolphins Costas Agapitos and Ioannis Lefakis have resigned from the troubled Greek ferry giant, writes Nigel Lowry in Athens-Monday April 02 2001 TWO prominent Greek ferry owners have resigned their posts at Minoan Flying Dolphins, the troubled coastal giant that last year suffered the Express Samina disaster and the suicide of its creator, Pantelis Sfinias. The pair, Costas Agapitos and Ioannis Lefakis, are also among the company’ s largest individual shareholders and it is understood they are not leaving the group altogether. But the move heralds a management shake-up of the 70-ship company, which was formed with the backing of Crete’ s Minoan Lines and in a whirlwind round of acquisitions in 1999 swallowed up many of the country’ s traditional coastal operators. Last week’ s resignations immediately fuelled speculation of a rift between the pair and Minoan Lines, which at present controls 31% of MFD.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER Mr Agapitos and Mr Lefakis were managing directors respectively of Hellas Ferries and Saronicos Ferries, the two divisions that operate the group’ s fleet of elderly conventional ferries on routes to islands in the Cyclades, Sporades and Saronic Gulf. Besides these, MFD operates a large fleet of catamarans and hydrofoils on fast short-haul services in the coastal trades. At the same time the company has announced the appointment of a well-known financial executive to assume the post of general manager as of April 23. He is career banker George Patakos, a former country manager for ABN-Amro in Greece. MFD said the appointment would “strengthen the development of the company and make a decisive contribution to its reorganisation”. The management shuffle comes after the company reportedly made a modest loss for 2000 against a background of steep fuel price rises which bit into the earnings of all companies in the sector. MFD’ s chairman Costas Klironomos, who also heads Minoan, declined to discuss the resignations in detail at the end of last week, which also saw the arrival in Greece of the mother company’ s latest newbuilding. “MFD follows its own course and is being fully supported by Minoan,”Mr Klironomos commented. Constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries, the 27,000 gt Prometheus is the first of four sister ro-pax ferries being built for the group by the South Korean yard. Designed for 1,000 passengers and up to 600 cars, or 120 trucks and 150 cars, the 30-knot newbuild is due to commence sailings on her Patras-Corfu-Igoumenitsa-Venice route this week. She replaces the 1974-built Fedra, which has been taken over by MFD for a new domestic service in the eastern Aegean. Minoan also recently took delivery of the first of another four-ship series, this time built in Italy by Fincantieri. The 30,000-tonne Knossos Palace joined the company’ s fleet last November and is operating between Piraeus and the company’ s home port of Heraklion in Crete.
ISU sees 30% rise in casualties
Monday April 02 2001 Numbers of casualties handled by salvor members of the International Salvage Union rose by a third last year according to its latest survey. Members of the ISU responded to 310 casualties last year, compared with 232 the previous year. The aggregate figure of cargoes and bunkers salved also rose, by just over 36%, from 434,100 tonnes to 591,202 tonnes. The figures were contained in the ISU’ s latest annual pollution prevention survey. According to the union’ s president Jean Labescat: “The increase on 1999 is significant but the total of pollutants recovered is only half that of 1998, when a total recovery of 1.18m tonnes was recorded.” Mr Labescat attributed the lower recovery partly to the absence of laden VLCC salvage operations. There has also been a drop in the amount of chemicals involved in salvage operations, Mr Labescat said. He noted a growing focus on the removal of marine fuels “as the first step in casualty salvage. This is reflected in an increase of nearly 28% in the volume of bunkers recovered last year.” Crude oil amounted to 71% of recoveries last year, with 14% for bunkers, 13% for other pollutants like slops, dirty ballast and non-hydrocarbons and 2% for chemicals. There was a major reduction in the tonnage of chemicals involved in casualties, although slops and dirty ballast recoveries rose sharply last year and bunker recoveries were also substantially up on 1999 levels. The ISU has been pressing hard to see responder immunity for salvors included in the Bunker Convention agreed at the International Maritime Organisation last week. However, the move failed, although the IMO did pass a resolution recommending that countries introduce some kind of responder immunity in their own legislation. During 2000, 15 salvage services concerned tankers, compared to 20 in 1999, and there was a substantial fall in the number of casualties requiring ship-to-ship transfer. These totalled six, compared to 20 the previous year.

CASUALTY REPORTING Wijsmuller clinches Normandie By Marcus Hand-Monday April 02 2001 Wijsmuller has clinched the contract to salvage the CMA CGM containership that ran aground in the Singapore Strait last Tuesday night. A spokeswoman for Wijsmuller confirmed it has been appointed to refloat the 4,688 teu CGA CGM Normandie, run aground on Helen Mar Reef in the Indonesian part of the Singapore Strait. Wijsmuller beat off competition from a number of other major salvors which were understood to include Smit International, Semco and Kasel Salvage. The Dutch company deployed a team of 40 salvors on Friday at the ship. According to Wijsmuller five of the ship’ s holds are damaged. It is understood that divers are working under the ship to patch up damage to the hull. Oil spill response equipment, such as booms, is also on standby in the event of a bunker spill. The spokeswoman said some oil had leaked out but it was “a very small amount”. Barges with cranes will be deployed to lighten the ship’ s cargo. The French owners said on Thursday that 1,200 full boxes, of the 1,950 onboard, would have to be taken off. Once the ship has been lightened she will be refloated and sent to nearby Singapore for repairs. The whole operation is expected to take about a week. The Normandie had been en route from Port Klang in Malaysia to Jakarta, Indonesia. MARINE AGIA DOXA (Cyprus) Lagos, Mar 5 — M bulk carrier Agia Doxa sailed Apapa-Lagos Mar 2. — Lloyd's Agents. DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER said the clean-up was aided by calm, clear weather. About 764,000 gallons spilled from the m oil/chemical tanker Baltic Carrier. Goopy oil paste covered at least 12 miles of coastline and killed more than 200 birds. On Friday (Mar 30), hunters shot ducks, heron and other fowl that were coated in oil and beyond rescue. Environmental protection vessels from Denmark, Sweden and Germany used machines to suck up oil that had not reached shore. Smaller slicks simply sank. Defence Minister Jan Troejborg toured the area today and said the main problem was reaching the area's rocky coastline with heavy equipment. The biggest slick drifted into the narrow Groensund strait between the islands of Moen, Faroe and Falster. By this afternoon, up to 10 percent of the oil in the strait had been collected but the slick had reached the entrance of a fjord that is a bird sanctuary and home to about 10,000 birds. The spill could affect as many as 2,000 birds, including eider ducks, long-tailed ducks and goosanders, said Knud Flensted of the Danish Ornithological Society. The cause of the accident was still unclear. Danish maritime authorities were expected to release a preliminary report later today. After the accident, the Baltic Carrier was anchored and the leak stopped. The m bulk carrier Tern continued on to northern Germany, while Baltic Carrier moved six miles away, away from the traffic lane, Tony Redding, a spokesman for Interorient Navigation, the Hamburg, Germanybased company that owns the Baltic Carrier said. He said the remaining oil would be transferred to another vessel on Monday. (See issue of Mar 31.) One of them, Ali Mohammed Omar al-Kurdi, was arrested and his house was searched by security forces yesterday, a relative said. The sources gave no details on the role those arrested may have played in the bombing attack. They said the arrests took place in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden. The attack, which occurred while the vessel was refuelling in Aden harbour, killed 17 US sailors and wounded 39. Eight other men are awaiting trial in Yemen for their suspected role in the attack.
