Five sailors die after inhaling toxic gas
KUANTAN: Five Chinese crewmen of the freighter Sunvazs died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a section of the vessel on Tuesday. Forensic expert Dr Zahari Noor said the crewmen could have inhaled poisonous gas while waiting for iron ore to be loaded onto the ship at the port here. However, Dr Zahari could not ascertain how quickly the men died or where the gas came from. Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Ghazali Md Amin said the five were identified as Cong Su Wei, 42, Yang Hua, 23, Zhang Jia Guo, 31, Lim Wan Jun, 32, and Xue Gen Lin, 28. Their colleague Lin De Xiang, 23, who also inhaled the gas, received outpatient treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. ACP Ghazali said the six were among 28 of the crewmen who had been on the waiting line to load the iron ore not far from the berth for the past nine days, adding that the six were cleaning up a section of the ship when the incident occurred at 2.30pm. He said the Sunvazs was registered at Kingstown, St Vincent Island, in the Caribbean.

Hong Kong plays it safe THE Hong Kong Marine Department has urged all vessel owners and operators to remind crew members to strictly observe safety practices to avoid potential danger risks. The call was made following an investigation into a fatal accident in which a coxswain died after falling into the cargo hold of a vessel when it was operating on cargo loads at a container terminal. It emerged that a number of irregularities contributed to the accident. A Coroner's Court inquiry into the accident recommended that owners and crew members of vessels heed the importance of observing safety guidelines relating to the means of access and safe movement of personnel working on board a vessel. The major points in the guidelines include: Ensuring the provision and maintenance of a safe means of access to any place on the ship; all deck surfaces used for transit about the ship and all passageways, walkways and stairs to be properly maintained and kept free from substances liable to cause a person to slip or fall; areas used for loading or unloading of cargo or for other processes for transit should be adequately and appropriately illuminated to ensure that the surroundings are clearly seen; any opening, open hatchway or dangerous edge should be fitted with secure guards or fencing, except for the situation where the opening is a permanent access way, or where hindrance to necessary work progress might be posed; all ladders aboard a vessel to be of good quality and strong enough to cater for crew needs with ladders providing access to the hold to comply with the required standards; workers moving on board a vessel to stay alert to guard themselves from potential dangers; when deck cargo is being lash

ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES NOVEMBER BOOST TO THE UK FERRY MARKET November saw a boost in the UK ferry market as all sectors of the market recorded significant increases in passenger traffic compared with the same month last year. UK-Continent passenger traffic increased by 12.6% to reach almost 1.5 million passengers while UKRepublic of Ireland traffic shot up by 19.3% to 192,000 passengers and passenger traffic on major domestic ferry routes grew by 14.7% to over 1.0 million passengers. With significant investment in new vessels and improvements to the quality of service and the maintenance of quick check-in times many passengers are rediscovering the ease, flexibility and comfort of ferry travel with their car. Recent events have shown that the British public prefer to be in control of their travel arrangements, be secure and wish to take breaks near to home. Car Ferry travel, with excellent links to Europe*, Ireland, the Channel Islands, The Isle of Man, the Scottish Islands and the Isle of Wight, fulfils all these requirements. We are all looking forward to the continued growth of passenger demand for independent travel close to home in 2002.” The greatest challenge to the UK-Continent ferry operators was the opening of the Channel Tunnel at the end of 1994. Channel Tunnel services expanded the total market and took a significant market share. However, November’ s figures confirm the trends over the last 3 months and shows that the ferry operators have hit back and have taken business from the tunnel.

Le Havre breaks box record THE Port of Le Havre has broken the 1,500,000 TEU container ceiling, a figure never reached so far for the container trade of the port during a year. On December 17, 1996, the port of Le Havre entered the circle of European ports handling a yearly throughput of more than a 1,000,000 TEU and ever since it has been recording a steady traffic growth. The 1,500,000th container was handled at the Atlantic Terminal on board the Hoechst Express, a Grand Alliance vessel bound for Canada (Halifax), the east coast of the US (New-York, Norfolk, Savannah) and the west coast (Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle). The final results for the container trade of this year, which will be published early next year, have already exceeded the 1,465,000 TEU of the year 2000

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - US Navy officials removed the captain of the USS John F. Kennedy after the aircraft carrier failed an inspection. Captain Maurice Joyce was removed after the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey gave the Kennedy an unsatisfactory rating last week. ''It's pretty unusual,'' said Navy spokesman Mike Maus. ''It hasn't happened in a while. But a commanding officer of a ship has responsibility over the ship. He is the man in charge.'' Navy officials in Washington said the ship's failure to pass inspection had nothing to do with its combat readiness. The problem was the ship's ''material condition,'' they said. Joyce has not been fired, but it is highly unlikely that he will gain promotion after being relieved of command, Navy officials said. The ship was expected to go to Puerto Rico for training in January in preparation for a six-month deployment. ''We're confident the ship will be able to meet any commitments it has,'' Maus said. He would not comment on what those commitments are. Joyce had been captain of the ship since October 2000. The carrier is now under the command of its executive officer, Commander Jim Gregorski. Maus said Navy officials were considering canceling holiday leave for the Kennedy's crew so the ship could pass inspection.
