EVENTS, INCIDENTS & OPERATIONS The 'Frecce Tricolore' planes perform the colors of the Italian flag during celebrations in Piazza Unita' square in Trieste, northern Italy, Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004 to mark the 50th anniversary of the return of Trieste to Italy.
Sailors plucked from icy Japan Sea Rescuers saved two sailors from the Japan Sea off Russia's Pacific coast on Thursday, two days after their timber ship disappeared in a storm, the Vladivostok search and rescue co-ordination centre said. Twenty-six seaman remained missing in that disaster and seven other sailors were missing after another ship sank in the same region on Tuesday. One of the rescued sailors was first spotted by a search plane. A helicopter was sent to lift him off the lifeboat where he had been perched. The Russian cargo ship chartered by a Mongolian owner was headed for Japan with a load of timber. A helicopter pulled the second sailor straight out of the sea. He had withstood the frigid temperatures in a wetsuit
Fewer Pirate Attacks Worldwide
Pirate attacks worldwide in the first nine months of 2004 dropped to their lowest levels in five years, helped by declines in hotspots such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nigeria, a maritime group said today. Seafarers suffered 251 attacks globally between January and September, a 27% drop from the 344 attacks in the same period of 2003, the British-based International Maritime Bureau said in a report released by its Piracy Watch Centre in Kuala Lumpur. The figure was the lowest for this period since 1999, when 180 attacks occurred worldwide. However, the IMB warned law enforcement authorities against becoming complacent. “We welcome the marked decrease in some numbers, but it’ s hard to determine whether the piracy situation is really improving,”said Noel Choong, head of the piracy watch centre. Choong noted that attacks sometimes spike in the last quarter of each year, often because countries lag in reporting earlier incidents. Indonesia remained the most pirate-plagued nation, accounting for a quarter of the global total. But the 70 attacks it recorded during the first nine months of this year WERE down from 87 in the same period last year. Many other nations also reported significant decreases during the period. Attacks in Bangladesh plunged to 15 from 37, India to 10 from 24, Nigeria to 18 from 28, Venezuela to six from 11, the Philippines to three from 12 and Vietnam to three from 10.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 226 The number of attacks in the Malacca Straits, a key shipping lane that straddles Indonesia’ s Sumatra island and peninsular Malaysia, was nearly unchanged at 25, compared with 24 in the straits from January-September 2003. A few other areas grew more perilous. There were eight attacks in the Singapore Straits and another eight in South China Sea, compared to none in both territories last year. Casualties worldwide remained high. Thirty crew members were killed in the first nine months of 2004, compared to 20 at this point last year. Half the deaths occurred in Nigerian waters, where pirates armed with automatic weapons have preyed on commercial ships and passenger ferries.
Farewell Assi Scan Link
The ASSI SCAN LINK made her last departure from Sheerness to Terneuzen this afternoon. The pilot told London VTS (formerly Port Control) that she had been on the route for 20 years but it is actually only 12. She is operated by Wagonborg for the Kappa Packaging Group of Sweden, bringing their products from their mill at Piteå, near the head of the Gulf of Bothnia to Bremen, Sheerness and Terneuzen. ShipPax report her sold to Gorthon Lines and will be renamed ACACIA She is almost the last of the once numerous `Tor Gothia' class to serve British ports. Not only has DFDS Tor Line disposed of most of its fleet, but others of the class have also gone recently - the SEA HAWK is now the AEGEAN SUN in the Med and sister vessel ASSI EURO LINK sank last year after a collision with the SEAWHEEL RHINE. Only the TOR HOLLANDIA is left. Photo: Adri van de Wege © This was reported sold to Turkish owners a few months ago but is still operating for DFDS Tor Line between Norway and Immingham. Her replacement is the brand new Wagonborg ship BOTHNIABORG which is currently at her owner's home port of Delfzijl. She will operate with sister vessel BALTICBORG, which was delivered in July, and on 12 November, the two will launch a new roro ervice `RoRo2Stockholm' once a week, in once direction only between Terneuzen and Södertälje (near Stockholm). Traffic can also be conveyed through to Piteå is required - although there will probably not be many takers. Previously ships, have gone from Terneuzen to Piteå in ballast. The service will leave Terneuzen at 14.00 on Fridays and arrive at Södertälje at 07.00 on Mondays.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 226 After having sucessfully delivered the old destroyer "Rommel" to Aliaga, the tug "Thomas de Gauwdief" proceeded to the port of Constantza to pick up a brandnew tanker-hull again, destined for Rotterdam.
After completion, this inland-water tanker, dims. 135 x 14 mtrs, will be used for continuous transportation of kerosine to Amsterdam airport. Being an inland water tanker hull, wet towage over sea is a rather difficult job, which is to be done with utmost care due to the prevailing weather- and sea-restrictions. Throughout the past few years "Landfall" Transport & Towage and the crew of their tug "Thomas de Gauwdief" have specialised in such type of "fragile" towages, which require an almost continuous contact and cooperation between the tug, the insurance- and towage-surveyors, as well as Weather News Benelux, which is providing daily "long range" weather routing reports for this voyage.
The convoy departed from Constantza 2nd November 2004 and has passed through Bosphorus today. Weather permitting, the "Thomas de Gauwdief" with her present tow is expected back in Rotterdam on November 20th-22nd, 2004.

CASUALTY REPORTING Ceres panamax goes aground Ceres Hellenic’ s 73,326-dwt bulker Red Fern (built 1998) has run aground off the Indonesian port of Balikpapan. Reports say the Isle of Man-flagged panamax bulker is still aground some 75 miles south east of the port despite efforts to refloat her. There are no reports of any pollution or any injuries to the ship's crew. The ship was en route from Argentina to India when the incident took place. Smit Salvage BV have been contracted to assist under a Lloyd's Open Forum (LOF) and are already carrying out on-scene operations. Balikpapan is one of Indonesia's major oil exporting ports, but has also become a major piracy hotsopt of late.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 226 Although the Aukra yard at Molde in north west Norway is best known for building chemical carriers and offshore support vessels it has previously built ferries for MRF and other operators. MRF operates 42 vessels including five high speed craft carrying 11 million people a year. Some are tourist boats serving the spectacular Geiranger fjord while others might carry 50 cars and 400 passengers but be as much part of the local transport network as a bus.

Seatrans in Eitzen deal Bergen based chemical pool operator Seatrans is near to signing a deal with Camillo Eitzen & Co to buy the 19,700-dwt chemical carrier Mont Blanc (built 2000) for $33m. Eitzen wants to dispose of the vessel as it is rather larger than other vessels in the fleet of its Navale Francaise subsidiary so its trading pattern is less than optimal. But the purchase makes good sense to Seatrans as the vessel already trades in its Seatrans Erfemer Tankers pool which operates nine vessels, ranging in size from 6,700 dwt to 19,500 dwt. Seatrans, controlled by the Hvide and Kyrkjebo families, tells TradeWinds that it is in advanced negotiations with Oslo based Eitzen but a deal has not yet been struck. Seatrans Erfemer also operates the 10,379-dwt Tour Pomerol (built 1998) for Navale Francaise but there are no plans to buy this vessel. The sale of the Mont Blanc is the latest of a hectic series of transactions by Norwegian shipowner, Axel Eitzen, but most have involved ship purchases or corporate takeovers rather than disposals. In the last couple of weeks Eitzen has acquired four chemical carrier newbuilding contracts and also taken a couple of sisterships on five year charters with options to buy.
Zeevarenden mogen toch sjorren
P&O PORTS CONTINUES STRONG GROWTH UK-based ports, ferries and property company P&O says that organic container volume growth in its ports business container volumes was 16% during Q3. It ferry business traffic held up well in relation to the overall market but this part of P&O’ s business is currently subject to a dramatic cost cutting review, involving service cuts and job losses, which is due to take effect early in 2005. The ports business saw total volumes rise from 3m TEU in Q3, 2003, to 3.4m TEU in Q3 this year. P&O says in a statement: “Record container volumes continue to be handled in P&O terminals in China, India and Pakistan. Despite exchange rates remaining unfavourable and congestion affecting some locations there has been no change in the expected result for the full year with profit growth in the second half anticipated to be ahead of volume growth” Regarding its ferry business P&O says: “Ferries’peak season tourist vehicle and passenger carryings were comparable to the prior year, despite a weak overall market, and freight volumes grew strongly. As anticipated at the half year, tourist and freight rates were down on the prior year and hence there is no change in the expected result for the full year. The implementation of the restructuring proposals announced on 28 September is on track.” It adds that Cold Logistics reported “good trading in the Americas and stable trading in Australia”. The group continues to sell off property saying: “Property disposals are on track to achieve the company’ s net sales target of £250 million by the end of the year.”
