CHEMICAL FREIGHT RATES SET TO DIP ALTHOUGH the chemical trades are likely to experience continuing healthy growth rates over the next decade, freight rates are expected to fall over the next two to three years according to a new study. Ocean Shipping Consultants’latest report “Chemical Carriers: Market to 2015”says that the scale of fleet growth is likely to be so large that freight rates will fall over the near term before some recovery later in the decade. In its base case, OCS expects chemical shipping rise by 20%, to 757bn tonne miles by 2010. This is likely to be followed by a further 13% increase by 2015.

CASUALTY REPORTING
Cargo Ship Runs Aground A cargo ship carrying six people ran aground today on the west coast of Scotland. The vessel was beached at Dunoon on the Firth of Clyde at around 5am Wednesday morning. A tug boat from Clyde coastguard attended, along with an anti-pollution team and divers. They are assessing if there is any structural damage to the cargo ship, which was empty at the time of the accident. A Clyde coastguard spokesman said none of the boat’ s crew of six had been injured in the beaching. The spokesman said: “It’ s well and truly stranded and we won’ t be able to refloat the ship until high water this afternoon.”He said divers were checking that fuel from the 80ft ship’ s engine had not leaked into the sea. The vessel, which came from Dundalk, Co Louth, in Ireland, was on its way to Glasgow to pick up scrap at the time of the collision.

Production at the site came to a halt July 10 after a blaze started with an explosion and then destroyed Global SantaFe's Adriatic IV before spreading to the platform. It was brought under control but for reasons that are under investigation erupted into a ball of flames jumping more than 20 meters (70 feet) in the air. The blaze appeared to be burning itself out slowly as the flames were no longer as intense as they had been at the outset, but the officials said it was several days before the fire was finally extinguished. All 150 workers on the platform, run by Petrobel and owned by Italy's ENI, BP and Egypt's General Petroleum Corporation, were evacuated in time to prevent any casualties. Photo : Via Han Eggermont
SHIPYARD NEWS Austal venture chases $2bn amphibious ship bid Austal stepped up its push into the defence shipbuilding arena yesterday, outlining plans to bid for the Federal Government's $2billion amphibious ship project. The Perth shipbuilder has formed a consortium with US defence electronics supplier Raytheon as part of its bid to build the two 25,000-tonne, 200-metre-long ships. The ships are designed to replace the Royal Australian Navy's heavy-landing vessel, HMAS Tobruk, and the tender is expected to be awarded late next year. Defence Minister Robert Hill has commissioned French shipbuilder Armaris and Spanish group IZAR to undertake a preliminary design study for the vessels. Austal managing director Bob McKinnon said: "We had to announce this arrangement with Raytheon so we could start to price some of the infrastructure and other organisational issues." Austal said it would have to find new facilities, possibly outside of Western Australia, and would lobby various state governments for subsidies. Yet despite the company being commissioned to build the Australian Navy's $450 million worth of patrol boats, there are concerns it lacks the experience in amphibious ships. After getting burnt expanding into luxury boat building - most notably with Greg Norman's Aussie Rules yacht - Mr McKinnon said the risk in the project was minimal, as Austal would have partners. He said the capital cost would be low because the company would rent facilities to build the vessels. Austal's partner, Raytheon, is supplying the new electronics systems to Australia's fleet of Collins-class submarines. Despite citing itself as a potential future bidder for the government-owned Australian Submarine Corp, Austal has ruled itself out of the $6 billion contract to build Australia's new fleet of three air warfare destroyers. ANZAC frigate builder Tenix has already put its hands up for the destroyer contract and is preparing a bid for the amphibious ship project. But it is understood the Government has ruled out awarding both contracts to the same shipbuilder. So a Tenix win on the destroyer contract could spell good news for Austal.
IHC CALAND YARD SALE IN Q4 DUTCH offshore engineering and shipbuilding group IHC Caland has reported a half-year profit of US$53.8m well ahead of the US$34.2m made in 2003 which included losses at the van der Giessen-de Noord yard. The company reports new orders in the six months to June 30 of a total value of just US$ 415m but says since then it has won further orders worth US$440m. The company says it expects a net profit for full year 2004 of around US$100m before an expected book loss on the sale of the shipbuilding division.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 In a statement the company says: “On 2 August 2004, the Group decided to proceed with the sale of the Shipbuilding division rather than to seek a separate listing. This decision was based upon several non-binding offers received from bidders who had been provided with the Information Memorandum. A short list of bidders has been established, and each party is currently undertaking due diligence procedures. It is expected that the entire sale process will be completed during the 4th quarter 2004. Until such time no indication of the anticipated level of sales proceeds can be disclosed, except that the Group does not expect to receive net proceeds equal to the equity book value of the Shipbuilding division. An extraordinary shareholders meeting will be convened during the fourth quarter to approve the sale proposal.”
Dubai to Launch Mid-Size Shipbuilding Dubai Drydocks, the region's largest maritime services facility, announced plans to enter the mid-size shipbuilding business with an investment of Dh165 million. It is also investing Dh367 million to upgrade some of the drydocks that will extend their lives to 40 years from the current 25 years. The company is planning to enter the newbuilding business for small and mid-sized tankers with an annual capacity of between one and two tankers. A report has been submitted to the government for approval and if it comes through, the work on the project will start by year-end. The company already has shipbuilding facilities, but on a smaller scale. With recently created Newbuilding Division within the Dubai Drydocks and enhanced engineering department, it will be able to build mid-sized vessels. This undertaking will require an additional 200 professionals. It is expected that upgrading of the drydocks will be completed in 18 months. Dubai Drydocks recorded 15 per cent growth in operations and business last year. They served 260 vessels and carried out conversion for two large vessels.

Port Klang, which handles a significant portion of Malaysia's trade, handled 2.62 million TEU over the period, an 11.1 per cent increase over the first half of 2003. Johor Port Authority, which operates Johor Port at Pasir Gudang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), posted a 23.2 per cent throughput rise to 2.4 million TEU, and Penang Port, reported box growth of 12.8 per cent for a six-month volume of 370,943 TEU. Kuantan Port handled 60,000 TEU, a 21 per cent increase in throughput over the same period last year.
OOCL orders four new vessels
The OOCL SYDNEY ORIENT Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) has signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries of South Korea to build four 4,500 TEU vessels which are expected to be delivered during 2007. The company said building the four vessels, each with a speed of 24.5 knots, demonstrated OOCL's continuous effort to upgrade its fleet and desire to cater for the growing demand and to ensure the quality of service provided to customers.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 Meanwhile, OOCL has appointed Sinotrans Development as its freight agent in Xinjiang after both parties signed an agreement recently, Xinhua news agency reported. The report said Sinotrans has become the first freight forwarder in the province which will be able to issue Bills of Lading. In addition, the company will be able to pack goods for export into containers and have them taken directly by rail to Urumqi for customs processing before being transported to a port for overseas shipment. This however will not apply to containers destined for Africa and South America, the report added. The general manager of Sinotrans Development in Xinjiang, Song Xinmei, explained that in the past containers had to be unloaded for customs clearance, and then repacked into other containers before being taken on board a ship. He said this was time consuming and required additional staff leading to higher freight costs. The president of OOCL, China, Zhang Zhichang said the move by the company is aimed at capitalising on the province's main exports of fruits and tomato sauce. He also said OOCL planned to open an exclusive "Urumqi Railway Express" to handle the business.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 UK broker Clarksons has taken over Normarine Offshore Consultants to form Clarkson Normarine Offshore (CNO) in a bid to broaden its oil and gas activities. Normarine serves the offshore industry worldwide. It handles sale and purchase, orders and charters of mobile offshore drilling units, and is also involved in transactions for service vessels. Clarksons did not reveal the financial aspects of the deal. It said: “The integration of Normarine into Clarksons underscores Clarksons continued commitment to growth and investment into the offshore supply and subsea vessel markets." In addition to broking services, Clarksons will continue to expand the consultancy and research business for the offshore market. CNO, which already has a Houston office, will start operating from the Houston offices of Clarkson Shipping Services USA and the London office of Clarksons. Steven Lawrence and Kjetil Stangeland from Normarine will join Per Sylvester Jensen and Ken Duell from the Clarksons Houston team. Piers Middleton will continue to operate from London. Further staff expansion is planned, Clarksons said.
Maersk expects rates to soar A P Moller-Maersk, the world's largest shipping company, said demand for container vessels will probably rise in the next 12 months, boosting freight rates as growth in shipments from Asia outstrips available space. Rising US and European imports of clothes, DVD players and other goods from China has allowed A P Moller to charge more for space on its 400 or so container ships. The Copenhagen-based company on Friday raised its profit forecast for the year.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 Asia's shipments to the US and Europe may rise about 16 per cent this year to 17 million standard 20foot containers, Drewry Shipping Consultants in London estimates. Freight rates to Europe may climb 14 per cent to US$1,790 a unit, on average, with US rates up 8.6 per cent to US$1,915 each. 'There may be a squeeze on capacity,' Mr Stubkjaer said. A P Moller is relying on internal growth to meet demand and does not plan to make acquisitions, he said. Its market value of 181 billion Danish kroner (S$44.7 billion) is third-highest in the Nordic region after mobile-phone makers Nokia Oyj, based in Espoo, Finland, and Stockholm-based Ericsson. 'We continue to grow our business on the back of demand from our clients,' Stubkjaer said. 'If the opportunity arises and it looks fantastic, we of course will take a closer look.' A P Moller, controlled by 91-year-old billionaire Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, owns Maersk Sealand oil tankers, the Danish airline Maersk Air and an oil company that produces about 500,000 barrels of oil and one million cubic feet of natural gas a day. A P Moller on Friday said profit before currency moves, shareholdings and asset sales will probably rise about 30 per cent to 17 billion kroner. Its shares fell 12 per cent on March 26, when it said earnings on that basis would be little changed from last year at 13 billion kroner. At the start of the year, A P Moller controlled ships with a combined capacity of 920,051 standard 20foot containers, and had 39 vessels on order to add 156,030 more, according to BRS Alphaliner, a Paris-based shipbroker. Net income rose 6.6 per cent in the first half to 9.9 billion kroner, or 2,415 kroner a share. That topped the 8.2-billion kroner median estimate from five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. Sales climbed 4.1 per cent to 79.6 billion kroner. Full-year sales may climb 5 per cent this year, from 157 billion in 2003, the company said. Net income at A P Moller's container unit, including its ports business, more than doubled to 3.84 billion kroner as sales rose 3.9 per cent to 44.8 billion kroner.
RSL adds ro-ro Latvian owner Riga Sea Line (RSL) is starting a new service between Riga and Sweden with its second vessel. It has chartered the 1979-built ro-ro Gute (6,600 gt) from Sweden’ s Rederi Gotland for a year, for an undisclosed amount. RSL spokeswoman Evita Matisone told the Leta news agency that the ship will run between Riga and Nynashamn, a part of Stockholm port, 70 kilometres from Frihamnen, the destination of its other vessel, the 12,300gt Baltic Kristina (built 1973), which it owns. Gute is primarily a freight ship, but can carry 86 passengers. According to Matisone, RJL is still looking for one more ferry that would deal with passenger transportation. However, cargo transportation volumes have been growing faster, with Baltic Kristina unable to meet increasing demand.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 RJL believes that it could buy the third ferry with the help of investors, but this has been impossible so far. Matisone believes the question could be solved in a few months. Gute will sail under the Swedish flag and have a Swedish crew. The maiden trip from Nynashamn to Riga is scheduled for 8 September. RSL is also considering opening a route between Riga's Bolderaja and Vecmilgravis across the Daugava River. Its turnover in 2003 amounted to LVL 4.99m ($9.21m) and profit was LVL 4.77m. The Freeport of Riga holds a 31.6% stake in RJL and Riga City Council 25.95%. Baltic Kristina will be undergoing repairs between 25 October and 15 November, during which time another ferry will be chartered to run on the route.
Evergreen H1 profit surges 20-fold Evergreen Marine Corp, the world's third-largest shipping line, posted strong quarterly earnings thanks to robust exports and freight rates, which it expects to remain high. It swung to a profit in the second quarter from a loss a year earlier, when the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) hurt regional demand, and boosted earnings 36 per cent from the first quarter.
The EVER DEVELOP at Maas Pilot station – Photo : Piet Sinke © Evergreen said first-half profit surged 20-fold to NT$4.6 billion (S$231.5 million), or NT$2.03 a share, from NT$228 million, or 10 NT cents, a year ago. Soaring exports from China and a shortage of cargo vessels have driven freight rates up over the last two years, though some analysts warned about additional cargo capacity coming into play next year. 'Mainland China is a very important market with a lot of export cargo. That is the reason why demand has been much higher than supply. That's why ocean freight prices have risen,' Evergreen spokesman Nieh Kuo-wei said on Tuesday. Around 60 per cent of Evergreen's container traffic is trade between China and the rest of the world, with the remainder taken up by intra-Asian business, said Mr Nieh.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 Evergreen, which operates more than 100 vessels, earned NT$2.66 billion in the April-June quarter, according to Reuters calculations based on its first-half results statement. That compared with a NT$41 million loss a year earlier and a NT$1.96 billion profit in the first quarter. Evergreen's main domestic rival, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, last week posted a second-quarter profit of NT$2.44 billion, up 47 per cent over the same period last year. 'According to our forecasts, next year there won't be so many new vessels built and the market will stay strong,' said Mr Nieh, adding that rates would stay firm in 2005. Evergreen has forecast 2004 earnings would more than double from last year to NT$7.46 billion on the boom in container demand due to the global economic recovery. Most shippers raised freight rates on both intra-Asian and transPacific routes this year. Atlantic Towing’ s AHTS UT722L Atlantic Hawk was spotted off New York this month when it was fixed to carry out cable repair work for IT International. The period of this work is thought to be around 20 to 30 days but may last longer. As a reminder, the Canadian owned Atlantic Hawk is a 14,400 BHP anchor handler with a 554 square metre deck.

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166 Navy's thrust area will be to restart submarine building in a big way and the country will have Frenchdesigned indigenously built submarines in the next few years, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash said. At a press conference here, he said talks were on the subject with the Union Government in this regard. He said Mumbai Dockyard had been awarded a big contract of over Rs 10,000 crore for French designed submarines. The first was expected to join the Navy before 2011 and thereafter every year one would roll out of the dockyard. He said the Navy would have 80 indigenously built ships in the next ten years. The Naval chief said that the Navy had placed orders for aircraft carrier with Kochi Shipyard and with Hindustan Shipyard here for construction of patrolling vessels and repairing submarines. The allocation of 16.5 per cent of defence budget to the Navy was sufficient to equip itself with state of the art weapons and meet security needs. He hoped that the allocation would go up to 20 per cent in the next five years

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 – 166
AIRCRAFT / AIRPORT NEWS Lufthansa, Air-India sign strategic alliance LUFTHANSA and Air-India have signed a strategic alliance designed to improve their market positions on India-Europe-USA routes. The alliance commences on October 1 when the two airlines begin a code-sharing arrangement between Germany and India. Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Lufthansa's chairman said: "We are banking on the dynamism of the India market and can see considerable potential through the co-operation." Lufthansa currently flies from Frankfurt to Delhi eight times per week and to Bangalore five times a week, as well as Munich to Delhi three times each week. The code sharing will see the addition of six flights between Frankfurt and Mumbai and three between Frankfurt and Delhi.
Thai Airways to add eight aircraft to fleet THAI Airways International has decided to purchase six new Airbus A380 double decker aircraft that are scheduled for delivery in 2008/09. The airline is also expanding its new fleet of A340-500s and A340-600s, by acquiring one additional aircraft of each type, with delivery of those planes in 2007 and 2008 respectively. The six A380s will be used on major trunk routes from Bangkok to destinations in Europe, while the A340-500s will be used on a new network of long-haul services from Bangkok to North America, and the A340-600s will be deployed on services to cities in both Europe and North America. "The relationship between Thai Airways International and Airbus stretches back to the first A300 order in 1977 and I am naturally delighted to see the airline once again select our latest generation widebody A380 and A340 aircraft for its long haul fleet expansion," said Noel Forgeard, Airbus president and chief executive officer.
