DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER sleepboot 'Oceaan'.

AP Møller moves step closer to snatching New World Alliance contract from ECT AP MØLLER'S Rotterdam terminal is poised to snatch a prize contract from rival stevedore Europe Combined Terminals. The New World Alliance is in discussions with APM Terminals about moving a transatlantic service to Maersk Delta. Neither side would comment on the reports, but inside sources confirmed that talks had been going on for some time. "Nothing is decided yet," said a senior executive from one of the alliance partners."Negotiations have been on and off for a while," commented another source. "It's still on-going," a third industry official added. If alliance lines MOL, APL and Hyundai Merchant Marine do shift cargo to Maersk Delta, it would come as a severe blow to ECT which is already losing the consortium's China Europe Express service to its arch rival, Antwerp. This represents some 90,000 teu of throughput a year. In the latest setback for Hutchison-owned ECT, up to 100,000 boxes from the alliance's Atlantic Pacific Express could transfer from the Maasvlakte terminal to neighbouring Maersk Delta. The New World Alliance service that may move is operated under a vessel sharing agreement with Maersk Sealand. The string calls at Miami, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, New York and Rotterdam

Seacor Smit announces first quarter results
Seacor Smit has announced net earnings for the first quarter ended March 31, 2002 of $11,406,000, or $0.55 per fully diluted share, on operating revenues of $103,643,000.In the comparable quarter ended March 31, 2001, SEACOR earned $12,134,000, or $0.62 per fully diluted share, on operating revenues of $93,200,000. Net earnings in the immediately preceding quarter ended December 31, 2001 were $18,679,000, or $0.93 per fully diluted share, on operating revenues of $109,804,000.Operating revenues declined $6,161,000, or 5.6%, from the fourth quarter of 2001. Lower offshore marine revenues accounted for $4,723,000, or 77%, of this decrease. Fleet utilization declined in the US but increased internationally. Worldwide rates per day worked were lower except for US anchor handling towing supply and overseas supply and crew vessels. Marine related revenues also reflected lower gross income from vessel sales and time out of service while converting a supply boatto standby safety service. Offsetting these declines were additional revenues generated by new vessels added to the fleet and the return to service of certain vessels previously relocated between operating regions.
Tidewater reports 4th quarter results Tidewater has announced fourth-quarter, March 31, 2002, net earnings of $28.3 million, or $.50 per share, on revenues of $169.4 million. In comparison, net earnings in the immediately preceding quarter were $33.5 million, or $.60 per share, on revenues of $181.8 million. Last year's fourth-quarter net earnings were $29.3 million, or $.52 per share, on revenues of $174.5 million. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2002, net earnings were $136.2 million, or $2.41 per share, on revenues of $729 million. For the same period last year, net earnings were $86.1 million, or $1.53 per share, on revenues of $616.7 million.
Trico reports net loss
Trico Marine Services has reported a net loss for the quarter ended March 31, 2002, of $4.8 million, or $(0.13) per share (diluted), on revenues of $32.1 million, compared to net income of $2.0 million, or $0.05 per share (diluted), on revenues of $43.3million for the first quarter of 2001. The decrease in revenues for the first quarter of 2002 resulted from lower average day rates and utilization for some of the company's vessel, particularly its Gulf of Mexico supply boats, compared to the first quarter 2001. Supply boat day rates in the Gulf of Mexico averaged $6,050 for the first quarter 2002, compared to $6,631 for the first quarter 2001. Average day rates for the North Sea fleet were $10,443 for the most recent quarter, compared to $10,389 for the first quarter 2001.

War ship's sinking marked for last time The HMS Edinburgh was laden with Russian gold Eleven veterans have gathered for the last time to mark the sinking of HMS Edinburgh during World War II, 60 years after it went down. The men, who were aboard the cruiser when it was hit by torpedoes, held a memorial service in Devon for those who died when the ship sank in 1942. A simple ceremony at The Hoe, in Plymouth, where the Edinburgh was based, took place on Sunday. The few survivors of the Edinburgh's 800 crew decided this would be the final year to mark their shipmates' passing because they are now aged in their 80s. Alec Ball, who was an engineer on the Edinburgh at the age of 22, told BBC News Online the ship was hit by German torpedoes on two occasions. He said: "At the end of April, 1942, we were taking a convoy across the Barent Sea to Murmansk, with ships taking armaments to support the Russian war effort.

But the fatal strike on the vessel, which was laden with gold, did not come until two days later, on 2 May. "The only reason I survived the second hit was because I had gone up to the mess to have a cup of tea, when I heard this huge bang," 82-year-old Mr Ball said. Gold recovered "My first reaction was to go and try and help the people who were injured, below decks. "The ship had been plunged into darkness and I can remember hearing a lot of screaming." He said that when the Edinburgh went down it contained gold bars, which were due to be paid to the Americans for arms it supplied. "It became known as Stalin's Gold - it has all been recovered now though, since divers went down to find it," said Mr Ball. Having served for 18 months on the ship before it sank, Mr Ball added it was a "very sad" sight to see the vessel disappear below the surface of the sea.
