Preface

In December 2005, the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement (IIAV) will turn seventy. When the IIAV was founded, its collection consisted of the archives of the Netherland’s best-known feminist, Aletta Jacobs. Over the years, the IIAV has built up an impressive international collection on the position of women. This unique information centre boasts a library, as well as print and visual archives. In 1994, the IIAV moved to its current location, a lovely former church in the east of Amsterdam.
The IIAV collects every piece of information available on the (changing) position of women: books, reports, essays, magazines, CDs, archives, photographs, posters and anything else that is of interest. The IIAV does this, on the one hand, to preserve the cultural heritage of women for future generations and, on the other hand, to make information available to everyone who is interested. The collection is used by, among others, scholars for their research or lectures, students for their theses, journalists who need background or statistical information for an article and publishers who want to enhance their textbooks with photographs.
Highlights in 2004 included putting online the poster collection that was compiled for ‘The Memory of the Netherlands’ project, developing the new multiyear policy plan, and the completion and premiere of Password: Women. Unfortunately, 2004 also had dark moments. Joke Blom, the IIAV’s director, passed away suddenly on 26 January 2004. In addition to dealing with this terrible loss, the government’s cost-cutting measures meant that the IIAV had to envision ways of achieving its goals with less structural subsidies. In 2004, a new policy was outlined and the risks and opportunities assessed. The IIAV also decided to chart a new strategic direction and focus on offering products and services to universities and secondary schools. Without neglecting its other target groups, the IIAV will continue to pursue this path so that teachers, students of all ages, researchers, journalists, politicians and policymakers can

Woord vooraf

become acquainted with the cultural heritage of the women’s movement and the position of women in the Netherlands and abroad.
Last but not least, a word of thanks to our domestic and international partners and our subsidizers. The Department for the Coordination of Emancipation Policy (DCE) of the Ministry for Social Affairs and Employment and the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) enabled the IIAV to carry out its normal activities. In 2004, a number of projects were made possible by, among others, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, Hivos, Novib, Mama Cash, NCDO, ICCO, Cordaid and the Stichting Democratie en Media (Foundation for Democracy and Media). We appreciate the trust these partners and organizations have in the IIAV. These have been important and profitable collaborations, and we sincerely hope these working relationships will continue in the future.

Preface
Despite this change of direction, the IIAV’s mission will continue to be what it always was, namely to ‘increase knowledge and promote research and, by doing so, contribute to the improvement of the position of women’. That was the IIAV’s mission in 1935 when it was founded and that will continue to be its mission in the future.

An Eventful Year – Looking Forward
The changes in the world of academic libraries and archives are far-reaching and occur at an almost breathtaking pace. Internet search engines are replacing traditional searches for articles and items in databases or on websites, and the number of large (virtual) networks of libraries and archives is continuously growing. It is a challenge for the IIAV to ensure that the information and collections it has to offer are and remain findable. New Direction In the year under review, the equal opportunities policy and the government’s cost-cutting measures forced a number of organizations dealing with the position of women, including (specialized) women’s information facilities, to close. This had important consequences for the IIAV: It increased the IIAV’s importance and uniqueness in its role as guardian of the cultural heritage of the women’s movement and as a provider of information on the position of women. The subsidy cuts, however, did force the IIAV to change direction. In 2004, the IIAV embarked on a strategic path that required it to think about what it wants to do for whom in the next years. In November, the IIAV presented its choices in the multiyear plan, Heritage with Ambition, which covers the period 2005-2008. Guardian of Heritage The new direction will continue to focus on cultural heritage in the broadest sense of the word: The expertise, knowledge and experience that has been and continues to be built up on the position of women. The cultural heritage of women was, is and will remain the basis of all of the IIAV’s activities. The IIAV is strengthening its affiliation with educational institutions, which, considering the uniqueness of its academic collections seems to be an obvious choice. Moreover, market research has shown that the largest group to regularly use the IIAV is scholars, a group that already belongs to our customer base. There are endless topics to research, and the IIAV has countless sources of information to offer.

Schools are also making more use of information gathered by institutions that preserve cultural heritage. This is consistent with the IIAV’s strategy. The first steps in this direction were taken with the development of the Aletta Jacobs website, which is well underway. The IIAV is also contributing to the website of The Memory of the Netherlands with posters and an educational application. Women’s Empowerment Where does this leave the women’s movement? Cultural heritage is, of course, an important source of information for organizations dealing with emancipation and women’s empowerment. It seems natural that the IIAV and these organizations should exchange ideas and collaborate more closely. One of the IIAV’s main objectives is to make sure its collections are used more. A number of things need to be done to achieve this objective. In 2005, new technology to develop question-based processes and increase the findability of the IIAV on the Internet will be implemented. This new technology will make it easier for the IIAV to provide information via its own website. The website will also be easier to search, contain more full-length documents and enable visitors to find documents on the website and in the databases using search engines such as Google.
8
Collaboration is the Future These activities require a different organizational structure and closer collaboration with partner organizations. The IIAV will become a more project-oriented organization in which project acquisition and fund-raising will play an important role. Collaboration with other institutions will enable the IIAV to provide better services and to share resources. The IIAV has previously worked – often on a project basis – with domestic and international partners. Extending the network of partner organizations and alliances is at the top of the agenda.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek
Research Agenda The IIAV asked Dr. Mieke Aerts to review the research agenda that the IIAV-affiliated researcher Dr. Francisca de Haan had created to determine if the projects should be carried out by the IIAV or a third party. One of the most important reasons to create an internal research department, namely to make better use of its collections, was also considered in the review. The objective of the review was to establish a well-thought-through and consistent policy for research-oriented activities that the IIAV could carry out itself or commission to a third party. With the new multiyear plan in place, however, it was decided to postpone the creation of the research department and invest the energy in carrying out or commissioning as much research as possible that was related to the IIAV’s collections and activities. Research projects can have an historical or contemporary, national or international character.

IIAV Jaarverslag 2004
The IIAV and Gloria Wekker are currently discussing the further development of the database ‘Expanding Horizons: European curricula on gender and ethnicity’ and the project ‘Black Athena’.
Er vonden verschillende gesprekken plaats met haar over de verdere ontwikkeling van de database ‘Expanding Horizons: European curricula on gender and ethnicity’ en het project Black Athena.
The IIAV recommended Ms. Wekker for the Triumph Award 2004 to recognize her contribution to ‘empowerment’, namely the process of transforming the energy and talents of black, migrant and refugee women into influence, authority and power. She was one of the three people nominated for the Triumph Award. Both the award and Ms. Wekker’s nomination received (nationwide) publicity.
Affiliated Researcher Dr. Francisca de Haan has been affiliated with the IIAV as senior researcher since 1998. She is also a senior lecturer at the department of gender studies at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. In 2003 and 2004, De Haan carried out research on the history of the International Archive for the Women’s Movement (the IIAV’s predecessor) and the return in 2003 of the archives the Nazis had stolen in 1940. The objective of this research project, which started in 2003, was to (re)write the early history of the IAV, shed light on the role of IAV president Rosa Manus (1881-1943), examine why the Nazis closed the IAV and reassess the consequences of the events in 1940 and the death of Rosa Manus before the IAV was reopened. After completing the research in 2004, Francisca de Haan wrote the article ‘A “Truly International” Archive for the Women’s Movement (IAV, now IIAV): From its Foundation in Amsterdam in 1935 to the Return of its Looted Archives in 2003’, which was published in the Journal of Women’s History (volume
16, No. 4, 2004) and is published on the IIAV’s website. The Second Feminist Wave In December 2005, the Institution for International Archives for the Women’s Movement (IAV) will celebrate its seventieth anniversary. The IIAV would like to celebrate this special occasion with something it has had on its wish list for a long time: A book about the second feminist wave. The wish is to create a book that, on the one hand, is attractive and easy to read, and on the other hand, meets academic criteria. This is not an easy assignment.

A “Truly International” Archive for the Women’s Movement (iav, now iiav): From its Foundation in Amsterdam in 1935 to the Return of its Looted Archives in 2003’.

Academic Research
In 2004, the writer and historian Vilan van der Loo agreed to write the book. She will be assisted by Dr. Mieke Aerts. An academic brainstorming group, consisting of Dr. Irene Costera Meijer, Annette Mevis (MSc.), Dr. Anneke Ribberink, Marjan Sax (MSc.) and Professor Doctor Gloria Wekker has also been set up. An anonymous benefactor is helping the IIAV carry out the necessary research, sell the book for an affordable price and use the book to spread the ideas of the feminist movement in secondary schools. The book will be published at the end of 2005 and launched at the seventy-year anniversary celebration.

i
Information Services
Customer Research In the first six months of the year, the IIAV carried out a study within the framework of its strategic reorientation to determine how the IIAV’s customers and partners value its services and products. A Webbased survey was developed, and all of the IIAV’s domestic and international contacts received an e-mail asking them to participate. Awareness, use, and relevance were measured for all of the IIAV’s services and products. On a scale of 1 (mediocre) to 10 (excellent), interest scored an average 7 points and satisfaction 7.5 points. The IIAV’s website, the magazine LOVER and the IIAV’s collections were the best known (among 70-75% of the respondents). The survey also showed that many of the domestic users are academics, while most of the international users are from women’s organizations. Among other things, the results of the survey were considered during the creation of the multiyear report. Question-based Processes To respond to specific questions adequately, the IIAV started a survey in August 2003 to determine the information requirements of media institutions. The survey, which was completed in 2004, showed that media institutions are prepared to pay for customized information and for more complex or extensive information requests. The quality and currency of the information and the speed at which it is provided also scored high in terms of importance. Most of the editors said they would probably not think of visiting the IIAV, but would use the IIAV’s telephone or electronic services. In 2004, a quantitative study was carried out to determine how the IIAV’s book collection is used. The study focused on the if, how often and by whom the book collection is used. The results will be published in 2005.

Which of the books acquired in 2004 were particularly striking?
Welke aangeschafte boeken in 2004 maakten indruk? Enkele onderwerpen waarover ze schrijft: Famous Mothers; Barbie, Girl in a Million, Get a Job, make a Career; Women and Slavery.
Helen Sumter, librarian
‘Two books stood out for me. The first book is Celebrating Women’s History: A Women’s History Month Resource Book, by Mary Ellen Snodgrass.
It’s a great book of 517 pages that contains guidelines for classes, courses and activities at all levels of education. All of the class examples have an extensive bibliography and a budget guideline. Some of the subjects Mary Ellen Snodgrass writes about are Famous Mothers, Barbie, Girl in a Million, Get a Job, Make a Career, and Women and Slavery.

The second book is Notable Black American Women by Jessie Carney Smith. It’s the second in a series of three reference books about black American women. It tells the stories of women who are alive and of women who have died. Not only are the women’s stories detailed, each is followed by a bibliography. The other books in the series are also available at the IIAV.’

the Clara Wichmann Instituut (Clara Wichmann Institute), the Stichting Vrouw en Muziek (Dutch Women and Music Foundation) and the Vrouwengezondheidscentrum Isis (Women’s Health Centre Isis), were closed. A subsidy from the Ministry of Justice enabled the IIAV to incorporate the collection Vrouw en Recht (Women and Law) from the Clara Wichmann Institute into its library. The IIAV is currently looking for opportunities, financial and other, to make other large donations available and incorporate them into the IIAV’s collection. The monthly magazine ‘Opzij’ recently contributed to the IIAV’s collection of visual material. On average, thirteen percent of the information collected was about black, migrant and refugee women. This percentage was slightly lower than expected because the large donations, such as the collection from the Clara Wichmann Institute, do not contain a high percentage of such information.

from the Ministry of Justice enabled the IIAV to acquire them, remove the duplicate books and magazine articles, and make them available on the website. The CLWI’s collection of books, magazines, articles and archives was incorporated into the IIAV’s general catalogue, and the database Women and Law put online. This created a treasure trove of information on specific areas of law, such as sexual violence, labour law, personal and family law, health law, alien and refugee law, parental authority and visiting rights, sexual harassment, and so forth. But more importantly, the subsidy enabled the IIAV to preserve the Clara Wichmann Institute’s valuable collection Women and Law.

The Collection of the Dutch Women and Music Foundation The Dutch Women and Music Foundation, which was also affected by the subsidy cuts, housed a unique collection of scores by female composers. It also developed the online dictionary of female Dutch composers. In 2005, the material will be entered into a separate database and made accessible. The

foundation may be able to fund some of the work through a subsidy. The Collection of the Mr. A. de Graaf Stichting The Mr. A. de Graaf Foundation – the Dutch centre of expertise and information on prostitution – was also affected by the subsidy cuts. The institute, which ceased its activities on 31 December 2004, asked the IIAV to take over its collection, which consists of some 2,500 titles on prostitution, the banning of brothels, the trafficking of women, legislation and so forth. The collection was moved to the IIAV at the beginning of December where it will be handed over to the IISG (International Institute of Social History). Funding is needed to incorporate these collections into that of the IIAV and to develop a website about prostitution that incorporates the IIAV and the IISG’s information sources.
Welk verworven beeldmateriaal maakte indruk in 2004?
Which visual material acquired in 2004 was particularly striking? Elkie Jordans, image archivist ‘My choice goes out to the exhibition panel with the photograph of Annemarie Grewel. The panel was given to us by the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, who used it for Hedy d’Ancona’s exhibition ‘The Personal is Political’. It’s a photograph by Erwin Olaf in which Annemarie Grewel, as a ‘super Grewel’, is running away from the minister and the doctor who are standing on the banks of the canals trying to catch her with a net.’

Welke binnengekomen archieven in 2004 maakten indruk?

Which of the archives acquired in 2004 were particularly striking? Annette Mevis, archivist: ‘The number of acquired archives was particularly
impressive. In 2004, we acquired a lot of archives from organizations that were forced to close because of subsidy cuts. We also received more meters of archives than the average 100, namely 133 meters. Other exceptional and valuable archives that we received include the archives of Anne Biegel (1905-2004) and Catharina Sluiter (1883-1957). The IIAV also received the archive of the Amsterdam branch of the National Women’s Association ‘Tesselschade-Arbeid Adelt’. The last archive I’d like to mention is Augusta Petronella Creutzberg’s (1890-1974) vanity document, which contains diplomas, photographs and a nationality card.

On February 6, the day the IIAV held Joke Blom’s memorial service, we received a very valuable donation from Willemien Ruygrok, which consisted of items from the De Born estate, such as a Gispen desk and chair, a floor lamp, a pen tray and a painting. The desk, the chair and the floor lamp are from Liesbeth Ribbius Peletier’s (1891-1989) study at De Born. De Born was a vacation and conference venue for workers’ wives that Ribbius Peletier built from her own money in 1932/1933. She gave a number of classes to reading-club leaders and speakers. The pen tray once belonged to Mathilde Wibaut (1862-1952). She probably got it in 1922, on her sixtieth birthday. The painting is a portrait of Ribbius Peletier that was painted and signed by Paul Citroen in July 1981.’

Metamorphosis Within the framework of the national conservation project ‘Metamorphosis’, the IIAV worked on the conservation of additions to the Aletta Jacobs archive, and the Rosa Manus, Lizzy van Dorp and van Welmoet Wijnaendts Francken-Dyserinck archives. The conservation of the archives and the publications of the ‘National Exhibition of Women’s Work 1898’ were completed in 2004. The conservation consisted of putting the archives on microfilm.

Lizzy van Dorp’s personal archive on microfilm
“What will become of the world when I’m dead?” Lawyer, economist, liberal member of the Lower House of Parliament and feminist. Lizzy van Dorp’s (1872-1945) personal archive shows a versatile woman. Between 1998 and 2001, Lizzy van Dorp’s archive was brought to the IIAV in dozens of boxes and envelopes of various sizes and shapes. In 2002, the IIAV was granted a subsidy from the national conservation programme Metamorphosis to put this rich and valuable archive on microfilm. In 2003 and 2004, an inventory of the archive was made and the archive put on microfilm. Portrait of Lizzy van Dorp in graduation gown. She was one of the first Dutch women lawyers. © G.A. The IIAV stopped managing and developing the database ‘current research women’s studies’ on 31 December 2004. It is more cost-effective and efficient to combine the development and management of a thematic research database on women’s studies with the Dutch Research Database. This collaboration will start in 2005.
22

Zij kregen

Guided Tours A total of thirty-one guided tours were given in 2004. A number of regular visitors, such as students from the School for International Training in Amsterdam, the department of Gender and Development at the Royal Tropical Institute, and a number of groups from the University of Utrecht, including a group of students involved in the ‘foremother assignment’, came back for a guided tour. The students were looking for information about different aspects of life and were curious to learn more about the circumstances under which their mothers, grandmothers, or great-grandmothers worked, what it was like for them to be housewives, which rights they had or did not have, and which books they could have read. The workgroup ‘The Personal is Political’ of the Universiteit van Amsterdam took a guided tour of the IIAV in preparation of their research into the second feminist wave. Among other things, they were given

an overview of relevant source materials: archives, books, magazines, visual material and so forth. The research resulted in a series of short lectures given by students at the National Archives Day on 30 October. The IIAV, in collaboration with the Press Museum in Amsterdam, compiled a special collection for the exhibition ‘Van zeep tot soap’ (From soap to soap opera) on Dutch illustrated women’s magazines. The group Rooie Vrouwen (Red Women) from Lelystad were given a guided tour of the exhibition, which was followed by lunch and a guided tour of the IIAV. Workshops The IIAV held three workshops on ‘Finding information about black, migrant and refugee women on the Internet’: • On 19 March, a study afternoon was organized for the three groups working on the project ‘The Cultural Heritage of Minorities’, which advises and decides on the projects submitted to promote the protection and availability of the cultural heritage of minorities. To gain more insight into the aspects of gender and the possibility of making them available by subject, the twenty-five participants were given a guided tour of the IIAV, attended a workshop on finding information about black, migrant and refugee women and were introduced to the Women’s Thesaurus. • At the congress ‘Estafette, knowledge exchange and development on diversity within the cultural sector’, organized by the Nederlandse Museumvereniging (Netherlands Museum Association) and Netwerk CS in the Amsterdam Arena on 16 November 2004. • Within the framework of the Girls’ Empowerment Course organized by ZAMI. This course was also held in Amsterdam at Chebba Girls’ Plaza on 5 December 2004. Project Website on Gender-based Violence At the end of July, the development organization Novib kicked off the project ‘Website on Genderbased Violence’, a website for partner organizations that combat violence against women. Every two weeks, the IIAV feeds the database with new information: news, publications, websites and activities. In addition, the IIAV supports the website’s forum by testing how a forum can be used as a platform to exchange knowledge. This project will run into 2005.

Slowly but surely, the Internet is turning into ‘the place’ to search for information. The IIAV worked hard in 2004 to make information available on its websites and in its databases. The IIAV currently runs four websites: www.iiav.nl, www.vrouweninfo.nl, www.alettajacobs.org, and www.enawa.nl. The latter is run in collaboration with a number of partners.
www.iiav.nl
www.iiav.nl The site www.iiav.nl is updated weekly with relevant information. Below are examples of the information that was added to the site in 2004: • The database of (women’s) organizations: The database contains information about some six hundred organizations (www.iiav.nl/organisaties). • The poster database: Some 1,800 posters are published on the websites of The Memory of the Netherlands and the IIAV (www.iiav.nl/affiches). • The Women for Water database commissioned by the Netherlands Council of Women, which contains information about women and water management (www.iiav.nl/womenforwater). • Four so-called ‘treasures’ were created from the total collection: Posters about March 8 celebrations, women and sport, Lizzy van Dorp, and slavery (www.iiav.nl/schatten). • Files, which are only available on www.vrouweninfo.nl until July, were also published on www.iiav.nl. For example, there is a file on female circumcision and one on the history of the women’s movement. • Since August 2004, books can be borrowed via the online catalogues and photocopies of articles requested via the website. Visitors can also request a library card on line. • A number of press releases and announcements were also added to the site (www.iiav.nl/nieuws).
Information Services
The development of a content management system for the IIAV’s website, www.iiav.nl, began in 2004. Additional services, such as a notification service, a newsletter and an order service were also developed. The website, which is also undergoing a face-lift, will go online at the end of 2005.

The Women and Water Database The development of the Women and Water database was commissioned by the Nederlandse Vrouwen Raad (Netherlands Council of Women). The database was delivered on 1 March. It can be found at www.womenforwater.org and in the digital information centre section of the IIAV’s website, www.iiav.nl/womenforwater. The IIAV’s Poster Collection In 2003, the IIAV collaborated on the project The Memory of the Netherlands, for which all of the Dutch posters in the IIAV’s collection were scanned and abstracts written. This extensive collection thoroughly documents the development of the Dutch women’s movement in the twentieth century. Some 3,800 posters illustrate the fight for women’s rights from 1900 to 2002. From women’s suffrage gatherings to ‘boss in our own bellies’ (baas in eigen buik) campaigns in the 1970s and women’s work around 1900, to the fight for joint child-rearing in the 1990s. All 3,800 posters can be found in the poster database at www.iiav.nl/affiches and The Memory of the Netherlands’ website www.geheugenvannederland.nl/vrouwenbeweging.

The Press Museum and the IISG The IIAV developed the website www.vrouwentijdschriften.nl in collaboration with the Press Museum and the IISG. The website was developed within the framework of the exhibition ‘From Soap to Soap Opera’ (Van Zeep tot Soap). In addition to providing an impression of the exhibition, the site provides an overview of all of the Dutch magazines in the collections of the IIAV, the Press Museum and the IISG – in total, 2,000 magazines and journals, past and present. The catalogue can be searched by title, section and freetext. A bibliography is provided as well as a number of articles on research that was carried out on women’s magazines in the Netherlands.

E-Quality With the objective of complementing each other’s functions, E-Quality and the IIAV entered a collaboration in 2004 based on the motto ‘We Share Knowledge on Women’s Information’. One of the pilot projects consisted of developing bibliographies. E-Quality and the IIAV introduced one of the bibliographies, equal treatment, during a meeting of international experts, ‘Progressive Implementation: New Developments in European Union Gender Equality’, which was held on 18–20 November 2004. This bibliography contains a list of the most important articles and books that relate to the policies of the European Union. Because of the expert meeting’s international character, the bibliographies were published in Dutch and English.
E-Quality
The bibliography ‘Intersectionality and Policy’ was published in mid-December. Intersectionality is the relationship between categories such as gender, ethnicity, class, age and sexual orientation. These categories create structural advantages or disadvantages in our society. The bibliography contains a list of the most important books and articles that relate to examples of intersectionality and intersectional discrimination in politics. A fact sheet on gender and the role of selforganizations of black, migrant and refugee women was also published.
The IIAV is a member of the initiative Beijing+10 Nederland, Tijd voor Actie! (Beijing+10 The Netherlands: Time for Action!) for which it also provides office space. The initiative commissioned the IIAV to write an NGO shadow report, prepare a conference on 15 January 2005 and develop the website www.beijing10.nl. In 2004, women throughout the Netherlands were invited to this large conference where they were able to determine their vision of the future together. The goal of the conference was to create an Agenda for the Future that will put pressure on Dutch politicians to act on a number of issues. Topics that will be addressed include violence against women, labour and care, health, media and development collaboration. There will be an opportunity to meet and make plans for the future.

Collaboration
Beijing+10 Netherlands: Time for action! is a joint initiative of, among others, the Women’s Secretariat of the Trade Union FNV, Hivos, Mama Cash, ABVAKABO FNV, Amnesty International, ‘Bureau Beeldvorming en Diversiteit’ (Bureau for Perception Shaping and Diversity), Choice for Youth and Sexuality, Cordaid, Dokhtarak, E-Quality, TIYE International and Transact.
The Pavem Committee In the spring of 2004, Pavem and the IIAV got together to discuss a potential collaboration. Bibliographies containing practical examples of language acquisition and integration, and the integration of immigrants in cities, companies and private organizations, were compiled for the members of the committee. A survey was also carried out to determine the names and details of black, migrant and refugee women who play a more or less prominent role in public life and could serve as role models. In addition, Pavem and the IIAV agreed to transfer historically important (digital) information from Pavem to the IIAV once the committee’s work was completed. Gender and Ethnicity Calendar The intention of the gender and ethnicity project, which contains cultural heritage material of Moroccan and Surinamese women, is to uncover more cultural heritage material from these groups. The project is carried out in collaboration with ZAMI and the MVVN (Association of Moroccan Women in the Netherlands). Requests for subsidies were submitted to two funds. At the end of 2004, the VSB fund confirmed it would subsidize this project. Photography Exhibition In collaboration with Imagine IC, a photography assignment was commissioned to Margi Geerlinks. ‘Recalcitrant heroines’ portrays seven black women, including the social activist Marlène Ceder, Thai boxer Ilonka ‘Killerqueen’ Elmont and the scholar Amâde M’chare. On 13 November, the exhibition was opened within the framework of this topic at the ‘Black Magic Woman Festival’ at Imagine IC. Geerlinks’s pictures have been added to the collection of the Visual Archives.

Curriculum Material for Secondary Education In 2004, the IIAV and history teachers started collaborating on the development of curriculum material for secondary education. A small response group of history teachers was set up. These teachers helped HAVO/VWO students with their team paper. KLEIO, the magazine of the association of history and political science teachers (VGN) and the IIAV agreed to publish (short) papers that were researched using material in the IIAV’s collections. The papers will be published in different issues of KLEIO in 2005. Online Dictionary of Women The IIAV is collaborating with the University of Utrecht (Faculty of Arts) and the Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis (Institute of Netherlands History) on the project Digitaal Vrouwenlexicon van Nederland (DVN – Online dictionary of Dutch women). This online dictionary will provide a biographical overview of women who played a role in Dutch history before 1850. The short biographies

of some one thousand women who played an important role in Dutch history or made a name for themselves but have been since been forgotten will be published on the website. The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) was asked to fund the project. IIAV chairwoman Elske ter Veld is a member of the advisory board. Brainstorming Group EmancipatieWeb.nl The IIAV, E-Quality, DCE, STEO and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment are on the brainstorming board of EmancipatieWeb.nl. The objective of the editorial team of the ministry’s new website, of which E-Quality, DCE and the ministry are members, is to harmonize content, prevent redundant work and reinforce each other’s sites by fine-tuning information about the same subject while retaining each other’s points of view. The brainstorming group was dissolved in 2004 after the site was launched. AdamNet The IIAV is represented in AdamNet, a collaboration of seventeen libraries in Amsterdam. Backed by Metalib SFX, the results of the preliminary study into the development of an integrated virtual catalogue of all of the AdamNet libraries were presented in 2004. In the course of the year, it was decided to start the project Virtual Catalogue AdamNet (VCA) in 2005. The IIAV will participate in this project, which increases the accessibility of the IIAV’s catalogues. The IIAV’s deputy director, Marjet Douze, became in 2004 a member of AdamNet’s executive committee.

Effective E-Feminism
Effective E-Feminism
Effective E-feminism – a collaboration between European and North American women and information organizations – has entered its second year of existence. Effective E-Feminism consists of three programmes: training, information dissemination and research. In 2004, the focus was on developing the training and information dissemination programmes. WITT Part of the EfEf project, the Women’s Information Technology Transfer (WITT) has increasingly taken shape. Having run a few successful training courses in Serbia and Croatia in 2002-2003, Enawa (European North American WomenAction) commissioned the IIAV to determine how the continuation of the training courses could be secured for the long term. Enawa-trainers and partners in Eastern Europe developed the WITT concept: In a train-the-trainer programme, Enawatrainers teach Eastern European trainers how to teach local women to use IT in their information strategies. Hivos and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs funded the training. As a member of the core group of WITT, the IIAV raises funds for the project and manages

Within the framework of the information dissemination programme, Enawa continued to publish a digital report of the most important international events in 2004. Digitall Future was created to provide information to people who have little or no access to the Internet. The magazine provides in-depth information on the issues addressed on the websites www.enawa.org and www.penelopes.org. Digitall Future is an international quarterly magazine in which current international topics are discussed from a feminist perspective. Published for the first time on December 1, 2004, this sixteenpage bilingual issue reported on the European Social Forum in London. Dozens of articles, news items, essays and opinion pieces discussed the situation of women in Europe and Europe’s influence on the rest of the world. Published in English and French, Digitall Future is compiled by an international team of feminist media professionals. The team members’ different backgrounds enrich the layout and content of the articles, which take a look at domestic issues from an international point of view. Digitall Future is an initiative of Enawa (www.enawa.org) and is financed from contributions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IIAV.

The importance of (international) collaboration Lin McDevitt-Pugh Programme Director International Collaboration
‘In 2004, the focus was on reinforcing partnerships and developing long-term strategies for successful initiatives. The IIAV has longstanding relationships with organizations that share our vision and know that partnership is the key to success. Partnership means mutual support: Collaboration strengthens both partners equally. The IIAV’s partners are members of the Know How Community, Hivos, DCE and Dutch women’s organizations. We carried out a few special projects. For example, the film Password: Women, in which we showed the different answers we received to the question, “What is women’s information?” Each women’s organization assesses the requirements and their ability to fulfil them. There is a lot of potential out there, and one person’s opportunity is another person’s inspiration. I really enjoy touring with the film and seeing how people react to it. For example, take Anastasia, an old woman from Uganda. She is an inspiration for

women around the globe. Her words, ‘I show women how they can do something about their own situation’, say something very basic and yet very important. She shows us how we can contribute, and points out how worthwhile our work is. When it comes to providing information about women, the IIAV is one of the big players. But in terms of its own organization, the IIAV is small. The amount of knowledge the IIAV has is so vast that we would never be able to define the boundaries of our reach on our own. The IIAV’s goal is to make information accessible, for example, by making sure the Internet is open to women. This cannot be done without partners. We work with partners to teach women how to use the Internet because information that is online is easier to disseminate. This is the IIAV’s contribution to making information accessible to a wider audience.’
The number of hits www.iiav.nl/ic receives has grown considerably, namely by eighty percent since 2003. The website contains abstracts of all of the international projects as well as the newsletter, IIAV International News.

On 19 October 2004, the IIAV’s film Password: Women premiered at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT). The one hundred and sixty guests eagerly watched the touching images of women in Uganda, Macedonia and Costa Rica who are working hard to increase the use of computers and the Internet in their environments. Critical discussions followed the screening of the film. Are modern information and communication strategies really the best way to improve the living conditions of women?

The Kasander Film Company was asked to make a film on this subject, and to include a few of the international information projects the IIAV is involved in. Eastern Europe, and how the women of the Costa Rican radio station FIRE, or ‘Radio internacional feminista’, used Internet radio to broadcast critical programmes without have having them censored. The audience emphasized over and over how moving and inspiring the dedication and drive of these women was to make computers and the Internet accessible in their own environment. A write-up of the premiere can be found at www.iiav.nl/password:women. Background The IIAV has been coordinating the Know How Conference since 1998. The alliances and the collaboration within Know How made the creation of this film possible. The four hundred Know How organizations, of which almost all can be found in the Mapping the World database (www.iiav.nl/mapping), are also distributing the film. Password: Women was made possible with the financial support of DCE, Hivos, Novib, NCDO, Mama Cash and the ‘Stichting Democratie en Media’ (Foundation for Democracy and Media). The film was made on VHS in three different formats (PAL, Secam and NTSC) and provided with subtitles in several languages (English, Spanish and Dutch) so that it can be screened around the world. The film was also released on DVD with English/Dutch and English/Spanish subtitles. A subsidy from Hivos enabled us to handout the film to some two hundred women’s information institutions in the South. By means of an order form, the interested institutions could order Password: Women for free. The film was also screened on National Archives Day (30 October), during the annual conference of the international Women’s Programme of the Open Society Institute in Prague (12 November), during a lecture given by Dr. Mineke Bosch in Maastricht (23 November), during a conference of the International Women’s Development Association in Melbourne (23 November) and during the COS in Zierikzee (25 November).

Achtergrond Het iiav is sinds 1998 de coördinerende instelling achter de Know How Conference.

Postcards based on the IIAV’s Collection
Aware of the splendid visual material contained in the drawers and cabinets of the visual archive and on digital media, the IIAV has wanted to make a set of postcards for many years. In 2004, the IIAV fulfilled its wish. The first step consisted of deciding what the cards should reflect: The Dutch advocate of women’s liberation, Aletta Jacobs, a travelling Rosa Manus, the ‘boss-in-our-own-bellies’ campaigns in the Dolle-Mina days, or the globally recognized women’s symbol? Or should they depict something modern, such as a navel piercing and athletic headscarves, or the timeless photograph of Angèle Etoundi Essamba? In the end, there is something for everyone: Each card tells its own story, but combined, the ten cards provide an excellent picture of women of the past and present.

The IIAV publishes two newsletters: The Dutchlanguage IIAV Nieuws and the English-language IIAV International News. The IIAV Nieuws contains information about current developments at the IIAV, new services, completed and current (international) projects and recently published works. Printed editions of the newsletter are sent to the IIAV’s customers and partners. IIAV Nieuws was published in May 2004, and can be referenced online at www.iiav.nl/nieuwsbrief. IIAV International News is published twice a year. Partners around the world are invited to contribute. The English, French and Spanish versions of International News can be referenced online at www.iiav.nl/newsletter. IIAV International News was published in May and November 2004.
LOVER LOVER is a magazine on feminism, culture and science that contains topical articles about women, women’s studies and the women’s rights movement. LOVER is compiled by an independent team of editors, but published and promoted by the IIAV. Each edition of LOVER contains one page of news about the IIAV. The editorial, the table of contents and an article are published on the website as ‘lure’. The year 2004 was a difficult year for LOVER. The number of subscribers stagnated and the costs increased. Although earlier measures to streamline management and increase the efficiency of the editors bore fruit, they did not help increase revenue. The IIAV hoped that LOVER’s production costs would be fully covered by the subscription fees and other sources of income.

LOVER’s difficulties did not go unnoticed. Women’s
studies workgroups urged the IIAV to secure the future of the magazine. Articles published in LOVER are often considered to be academic. In the fourth quarter, LOVER discontinued the Signals column, which provided an overview of recent publications in the area of gender and women’s studies. Starting in 2005, the column will be available online at www.iiav.nl/signalementen, and hence available to a larger audience.
Handleiding ‘Hoe organiseer je een e-conferentie?’
A Guide to Organizing E-Conferences
Organizing an E-Conference: A Guide is elektronisch beschikbaar gemaakt via www.iiav.nl/e-conference-guide, enkele tientallen exemplaren zijn per post verspreid.
An Internet conference, a so-called virtual or e-conference, is an efficient and quick way of getting people from around the world together to discuss issues and exchange knowledge. Case studies, best practices and the results of surveys and studies are also presented during the conferences. The IIAV organized and hosted the last four years four annual e-conferences. One of the e-conferences focused on combating violence against women, the other three focused on subjects related to mainstreaming gender in water management. Among others, academicians, activists, NGOs, local organizations, policymakers and civil servants from around the globe participated in the e-conferences that each lasted for a few months. The publication Organizing an E-Conference: A Guide (2004), is based on the experiences gained organizing the conferences. The guide introduces the concept of e-conferences and addresses their advantages and disadvantages. It provides examples of situations in which digital communication is particularly useful, and discusses all of the steps and phases relevant to planning and running an e-conference. Organizing an E-Conference: A Guide, is available online at www.iiav.nl/e-conference-guide. A few dozen copies were distributed by post.

IIAV Jaarverslag 2004
LOVER 2004/1
There is no lack of diversity in this edition of LOVER. The book week is discussed in an article about the French writer Annie Ernaux, who is controversial in feminist circles. It also provides a view on the design and layout of books based on the Writing Machines by Katherine Hayles (the article by Mischa Peters is available online at www.tijdschriftlover.nl/artikelen) and a view on the lack of commitment in poetry, and in particular by women poets.
LOVER 2004/2
The discussion on integration seems to have turned into a discussion on headscarves, writes Soula Notos in her praise about the performance Gesluierde monologen (Veiled monologues). It really does seem as if the sentiments about integration, Muslim fundamentalism, wars and terrorism have been reduced to a debate on headscarves. Islamic women are the victims, say Cindy van den Bremen and Mira van Kuijeren in LOVER’s leading article. Their article is available online.

LOVER 2004/3
This edition of LOVER is biographical in more ways than one. For example, Donna Haraway’s story and the four gender-thinkers who try to interpret her new manifest. Or Irshad Manji who decides to elevate her personal issues with Islam to a collective problem. And then there’s Soula Notos who examines the new naturalization policy from the perspective of a covert alien. This LOVER, however, is not only one of personal stories. It also addresses how people treat each other. The article Vrouw slaat vrouw. Geweld in lesbische en homoseksuele relaties (Women
beating women: Violence in lesbian and gay relationships) by Mariette Hermans is published online in its entirety.

Theme issue ‘LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX’ Sexuality and sexual identity in 2004
We are bombarded with sex; at least in the public domain. But what’s being said about how we experience sex? And what’s the status of sexual emancipation in the Netherlands and abroad? This edition of LOVER provides an in-depth insight into these topics. A number of articles clearly show that we still have a long way to go when it comes to sex and emancipation.
about communicating love and intimacy. The feminization of experiencing sex’) by Joanne van den Eijnden is available on the LOVER Web page.

International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (8 March) was celebrated at the IIAV as Kleurrijke ontmoetingen in Amsterdam-Oost (colourful encounters in Amsterdam-Oost). The programme was packed. In addition to the lectures by Lucy Kortram, Forough Nayeri and Mina Saadadi, a number of other activities took place, such as the workshop ‘Stories of days gone by’ held by Yvette Kopijn of Imagine IC, the workshop ‘Finding information about black, migrant and refugee women on the Internet’, held by the IIAV, a lecture by Cindy van den Bremen, and a fashion show of athletic headscarves for Muslim women.

Lecture on ‘The Trouble with Islam Today’ On Wednesday 16 June, the Canadian presenter and writer Irshad Manji gave a lecture at the IIAV on the trouble with Islam. Manji visited the Netherlands to promote her new book ‘The Trouble with Islam Today’ (Het Islam dilemma). She was hoping to meet critical (Muslim) women. Journalist and historian Margreet Fogteloo introduced the lecture. Irshad Manji, who was recently honoured with Oprah Winfrey’s first annual Chutzpah Award, held a candid and provocative lecture on change and tolerance in Islam. Lively discussions took place in the audience and between Manji and the audience. Some sixty people attended this event, which also attracted the attention of various media. National Archives Day On 30 October 2004, the IIAV participated in the National Archives Day. A varied programme

with topics such as Motherland history attracted some forty visitors. About sixty other archives also opened their doors. About three-quarters of the people that visited the IIAV were not familiar with the information centre. Among other things, the programme consisted of three lectures given by three students studying women’s studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam: Irene Pronk, on women’s discussion groups in the 1970s, Amöna Schliessler on the black women’s movement and Romaike Zuidema on her study of the role of the prostitute movement in the political debate (1984–2001). Supervised by Dr. Petra de Vries, the trio last summer carried out (graduation) research on three different subjects that all fell under the umbrella ‘The Second Feminist Wave’. Most of their research was done using the IIAV’s archives. The film Password: Women was also screened.
Lezing over Lustwoorden & LOVER
Walk to Art On Saturday 25 May, the IIAV participated in the art and cultural route Loop naar de kunst (Walk to Art), which was organized in Amsterdam’s East Indies neighbourhood. An exhibition of posters from the IIAV’s collection was especially compiled for the event. Almost one hundred people visited the IIAV, most of whom had never heard of the IIAV.
Lecture on Words of Desire & LOVER On Wednesday 8 December, the IIAV hosted a multicultural evening. The lecture Lustwoorden (Words of Desire), given by the historical linguist Marlies Philippa, was not only part of the IIAV’s lecture series but was also the framework for the presentation of the new special issue of LOVER on sexuality. In 2004, Philippa wrote the book Lustwoorden, over eten en seks in taal (Words of desire: On food and sex in language). Her linguistic colleague and ‘inventor’ of gender linguistics, Agnes Verbiest, was asked to respond to Phillipa’s lecture. Naber Award – a biannual award for the best graduation thesis in the area of women’s studies – was not presented in 2004. The Vereniging voor Vrouwengeschiedenis (VVG – Dutch Association for Women’s History), with which the IIAV organizes the award, and the IIAV agreed to postpone the notification until 2005 so that the award presentation coincides with the IIAV’s seventy-year anniversary. At the end of 2004, preparatory activities were performed to send out the notification in the spring of 2005. Friends of the IIAV In 2004, framework conditions for a IIAV (girl) friends’ club were drafted. People who care about the IIAV could become members. The IIAV would like to use donations to carry out activities that cannot be funded from normal subsidies. Such activities would consist of opening some of the collection’s valuable treasures to the public, or of creating new treasures, for example, by promoting research into the collection, handing out research assignments and supporting special publications. The donations would also be used to preserve a special archive or carry out an oral history project.

Johanna W.A. Naberprijs De Johanna W.A.

Enkele medewerkers
Organization, Staff and Board of Directors
A sad start In January 2004, two of the IIAV’s staff died very shortly after each other: Cora van Haaster, secretary, and Joke Blom, director. The IIAV held a memorial service for Joke Blom on the afternoon of 6 February. Joke passed away on 26 January 2004, shortly before her appointment as alderman in Alkmaar. Some one hundred and fifty people came to exchange memories and express their condolences. Moving speeches were given by Ferdi Licher (DCE – Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment), Gloria Wekker (senior lecturer, IIAV’s gender & ethnicity chair), Willemien Ruygrok (E-Quality), Jaap Kloosterman (IISG), deputy director Marjet Douze and the programme director of international collaboration, Lin McDevitt-Pugh. Chairwoman Elske ter Veld conducted the memorial service. Interim director Inge Ruys From 10 February to the end of 2004, Inge Ruys, MBA, was the IIAV’s interim director. She made an important contribution to the reorganization during her appointment. Reorganization The IIAV underwent a reorganization as a result of the new strategy, which is outlined in the multiyear plan 2005-2008. The cost-cutting measures inevitably took their toll. A few employees found

other jobs, but that did not prevent the IIAV having to make three employees redundant. These redundancies will be carried out in 2005. A new organizational structure and the training programme will also be implemented in 2005. One of the IIAV’s main goals is to increase its outward activities so that it can identify additional funding sources that will supplement its regular budget and enable it to continue to carry out all of its activities. Multicultural organization Another of the IIAV’s main objectives for 2004 was to increase its multiculturality as well as its multicultural customer base. The compulsory redundancies and a hiring freeze, however, proved challenging. The IIAV’s target is to have thirty percent black, migrant and refugee women among its staff. Because black, migrant and refugee women working at the IIAV have a special place in the social plan, they are exempt from the last in, first out principle. Employees visited partner foundations and conferences within the framework of professional development in the area of multiculturalism.

IIAV’s Board of Directors in 2004 The IIAV’s board of directors actively supported the organization in the year under review. In preparation of the multiyear plan 2005-2008, the board had seats on the workgroups that were charged with mapping out the impact of the structural cost-cuts and providing solutions. The new policy is largely based on the conclusions of these workgroups. We would like to thank all of the board members for their dedication and support.
Het bestuur bestond uit voorzitter Elske ter Veld, penningmeester Ellen Bien, secretaris Berteke Waaldijk en de leden Lioe Tan, Hellen Felter, Trude Maas en Anneke van Veen.
In 2004, the members of the board of directors were Elske ter Veld, chairwoman, Ellen Bien, treasurer, Berteke Waaldijk, secretary, and Lioe Tan, Hellen Felter, Trude Maas and Anneke van Veen.
‘The year 2004 was not easy for the iiav. The death of the iiav’s director, Joke Blom, and the reorganisation hit the staff and the board of directors hard. This made actively working on the future of the iiav particularly nice. Together, we charted our new course and formalised it in the new multiyear plan “Heritage with Ambition”. It was a busy time that produced inspiring results.’ Elske ter Veld, Chairwoman
