Op de cover: Granulaatkorrels van P.E. (Polyetheen) die gebruikt worden voor de productie van buizen voor de drinkwatersector. Het chemisch laboratorium van KWR test de granulaatkorrels via migratie in water op geur en smaak. Door zowel de korrels als de uiteindelijke buizen te testen, is de invloed van het productieproces op water na te gaan. Granular polyethene can be used in the production of drinking water pipes. The chemical laboratory at KWR carries out migration tests on granular polyethene to determine the effect on the taste and odour of water. Using the results of these tests in combination with the results from similar tests on the actual pipes, the influence of the pipe manufacture process on drinking water can be determined.

2010: Bridging science to practice Het jaar 2010 heeft in het teken gestaan van de groei van KWR Watercycle Research Institute als toegepast onderzoeksinstituut en verbindende kracht in de Europese waterketen. Wij vinden de titel van dit jaarverslag — Bridging Science to Practice — dan ook goed aansluiten bij onze activiteiten van het afgelopen jaar. Naast veel tijd aan ons wetenschappelijk werk hebben we ook veel tijd besteed aan het bij elkaar brengen van partijen die nodig zijn om ons wetenschappelijk werk stevig in de praktijk te laten landen. We begrijpen daarbij steeds beter hoe partijen in de kleinschalige en complexe omgeving van de watersector samen sterker staan.

The year 2010 was marked by the growth of KWR Watercycle Research Institute both as an institute of applied research and as binding force in the European water cycle. This is why we think that the title of our annual report —‘Bridging Science to Practice’— is an accurate reflection of our activities last year. Not only did we dedicate a lot of time to our scientific work, we also invested great effort in bringing together those parties needed to anchor our scientific work in water

Wetenschappers, overheid, drinkwater- en commerciële bedrijven: het zijn verschillende werelden, die samenwerking zoeken. Gaat dat goed? Ja en nee. Mariëlle van der Zouwen van KWR onderzoekt met Peter van den Besselaar van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam hoe je het delen van kennis het best kunt organiseren. Het lijkt zo simpel: je ontwikkelt kennis en die geef je door. Maar in de praktijk zit daar een hele wereld achter. Waarom verdwijnen goede rapporten in een la en zie je soms onverwachte samenwerkingsverbanden opbloeien? Mariëlle van der Zouwen (KWR) vertelt over de fascinerende wereld van kennisnetwerken: “We leggen plaatjes van mensen die samenwerken op plaatjes van onderwerpen waarover kennis wordt ontwikkeld. Dan zie je soms dat een onderzoeksgroep heel geïsoleerd ligt, waardoor de kennis niet verder verspreid dreigt te worden.” Peter van den Besselaar (VU Amsterdam) haakt daarop in: “In zo’n geval wil je weten welke prikkels er nodig zijn om die kennis wel te laten stromen, zodat ze toegankelijker wordt voor een breder publiek.”

Networks of knowledge, and knowledge of networks Scientists, government, drinking water and commercial enterprises: they all represent distinct worlds, but worlds that are seeking to collaborate. Is it going well? Yes and no. KWR’s Mariëlle van der Zouwen and Peter van den Besselaar, of VU University Amsterdam, are studying how the sharing of knowledge can best be organised. It seems so simple: you develop the knowledge and then you pass it on. But in practice the reality is very different. Why do good reports gather dust on shelves, while sometimes unexpected collaborations flourish? Mariëlle van der Zouwen of KWR discusses the fascinating world of knowledge networks: “We superimpose images of people who work together over images of the subjects about which knowledge is being developed. This sometimes reveals that a research group is really very isolated, with the risk that the knowledge it produces will not be disseminated.” Peter van

“There are clear boundaries within the water cycle,” notes Van der Zouwen. “We observed this, for instance, in the context of the annual summer course for Dutch water professionals. There were two parallel sessions: one on drinking water and one on waste water. We were interested in how many people from the drinking water sector attended sessions on waste water, and vice-versa. It turned out that less than ten of the over four hundred participants did so — that’s not even 5%.” This raises some new actually attended the other course? Did they succeed in building any bridges? The theory says that this doesn’t take too many: a couple of individuals at crucial spots is sufficient. “We also study what the international network looked like, and the position that the Dutch players occupy in it,” adds Van den Besselaar. “As a

In september 2009 publiceerde het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Nature het artikel ‘A safe operating space for humanity’ van Johan Rockström. Daarin staan negen ziektebeelden, syndromen genoemd, waar de aarde aan lijdt: onder meer klimaatverandering, overmatig zoetwatergebruik, de grote hoeveelheden stikstof en fosfaat in de landbouw en biodiversiteitsverlies. “Water is een van de verbindende elementen in al die syndromen.”

Onderzoeksthema’s In zijn langetermijnonderzoeksbeleid definieert KWR vier kern thema’s die richting geven aan het onderzoek: Gezond, Duurzaam, Vooruitstrevend en Efficiënt Water.

Research themes KWR’s long-term research policy is governed by four core themes: Healthy, Sustainable, Advanced and Efficient Water.

Gezond water focust op de relatie tussen de gezondheid van de mens en de waterkwaliteit: van (drink)waterbronnen, tijdens zuiveringsprocessen, in het distributienet, aan de kraan of in natuurlijk zwemwater. Veel aandacht gaat daarbij uit naar ziekteverwekkers en naar emerging contaminants in het waterige milieu, zoals geneesmiddelen en industriële vervuilingen. Onderzoek richt zich bijvoorbeeld op de effectiviteit van barrières tegen dergelijke vervuilingen in de watercyclus.

Healthy Water The Healthy Water theme centres on the relationship between human health and water quality; in (drinking) water sources, in treatment processes, in the distribution network, at the customer’s tap, or in natural bathing water. This involves paying close attention to pathogens and to emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and industrial pollution in the aqueous environment. The research concentrates on studying the effectiveness of barriers against such contamination in the water cycle.

Duurzaam water richt zich op productie-, distributie- en afvalverwerkingsmethoden die zuinig omgaan met grondstoffen en energie, als antwoord op klimaatverandering, toenemend energiegebruik en verstedelijking. Sustainable Water The Sustainable Water theme concentrates on production, distribution and waste treatment processes which are developed to use raw materials and energy more sustainably, as a response to climate change, growing energy use and urbanisation. This encompasses research into the use of brackish groundwater or seawater as alternative drinking water sources, water reuse or a more decentralised water cycle, cold-heat storage and ways of dealing with extremely low water levels in large rivers.

Vooruitstrevend water concentreert zich op veelbelovende ontwikkelingen in de technologie om die toepasbaar te maken voor de watersector. Advanced Water The Advanced Water theme focuses on promising technological developments, with a view to making them usable for the water sector. This includes research into the development of new materials in fine chemicals and nanotechnology, ceramic membranes, resins for ion exchange, adsorption products, antiscalants, and developments in fluid dynamics, chemistry and physics, in addition to measurement techniques and the use of sensors (for example, for water quality or the condition of the infrastructure).

Daarnaast maken we duidelijk welke technologieën de stedelijke waterketen duurzamer kunnen maken.

In order to assess the sustainability of the urban water cycle, he proposed 24 indicators. These include: the water footprint, drinking water use, distribution efficiency (presence of leakages in the distribution network), and energy and nutrient recovery from wastewater. By using these indicators, the performance of cities can be immediately established and the areas of further action can be identified. The city of Rotterdam was analysed in this manner. It is part of KWR’s core business to focus on the entire urban water cycle and to develop and apply technologies in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the urban water cycle.

The water sector is small in scientific and economic terms, and still considerably fragmented. Water, after all, is a very local and regional matter. But we are, as a sector, not only responsible for managing fresh water, in practice we are closely involved with global issues like biodiversity, climate change, chemical pollution, eutrophication and changing land-use. This makes us a relatively important operational player in the management of the planet’s natural resources. If we want to fully realise this role, it is absolutely essential for us to work together in complex networks.

This is important information for drug abuse researchers and crime investigators, because the current data regarding the extent of illegal drug use are based on questionnaires and surveys that are riddled with uncertainties.”

Ecological impact Residues of illegal drugs in surface waters can, just like pharmaceuticals, have an undesirable ecological impact. It is because of these ecological considerations that De Voogt calls for research into how pharmaceuticals and illegal drugs can be removed from sewage water and drinking water sources.

Using bacteria to detect toxic compounds KWR is developing a new biosensor to monitor the surface water used to produce drinking water. The sensor works with bacteria that emit light when their environment deteriorates. By continuously measuring the amount of light, any changes in the water quality can be quickly detected. Existing real-time monitoring systems that trace toxic compounds in drinking water sources have their limitations. They don’t ‘reveal’ what type of compounds they detect, and they don’t react to all the compounds that are relevant to humans. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the pipe coating seemed to be the cause. Since PAHs can be carcinogenic, KWR began a country-wide study. Up until the early 1980s, steel and cast iron pipes, coated on the inside with bitumen or coal tar, were used in the drinking water distribution networks. Een waterput bestaat uit een geperforeerde kunststof buis, die in een ruim boorgat is geplaatst. De ruimte tussen de buis en de boorgatwand is opgevuld met grind. Dergelijke putten kunnen feitelijk op twee manieren verstoppen: chemisch, door een neerslag van ijzerhydroxiden in de perforaties van de buis, en mechanisch, door het dichtslibben van de boorgatwand met deeltjes in het grondwater.

Voor het onttrekken van grondwater zijn verticale putten de standaard. Horizontale putten echter, kunnen in sommige situaties — bijvoorbeeld bij een dunne watervoerende laag — aantrekkelijker zijn. Een geschikte en betaalbare methode om dergelijke putten aan te leggen ontbrak echter. Praktijk onderzoek door KWR heeft daarin verandering gebracht.

Innovative technique for horizontal wells Although the standard approach to extract groundwater is a vertical well, sometimes horizontal wells are more effective, for instance, when the aquifers are thin. Until recently, there was no suitable and affordable means of installing such wells. Applied research by KWR has changed that. In 2006, a study by KWR and partners showed that the installation of wells using horizontal

Cirkel explains how the solution works: “Once the borehole has the right diameter, we introduce a casing pipe — containing the extraction filter — into the hole. We attach a special head to the casing pipe. In the next step we slowly pull the casing pipe out. We use the head to scrape off as much of the impermeable layer as possible. We also inject a substance which helps to break down the layer. These actions cause the soil — including the remnants of the impermeable layer — around to extraction filter to cave in.”

Cirkel is enthousiast: “Praktijkproeven laten zien dat de aanlegmethode werkt en Brabant Water is voornemens de techniek toe te passen op waterproductiebedrijf Macharen.”

Cirkel is enthusiastic: “Practical tests show that the installation method works, and Brabant Water plans on implementing the technique in the near future.”

Klimaatverandering leidt in Nederland tot een ander neerslagpatroon met meer droge perioden die langer duren. Tijdens droge perioden hebben tuin bouwbedrijven regelmatig te weinig goed gietwater. KWR onderzoekt de mogelijkheden voor een collectief systeem van ondergrondse waterberging.

Tuinbouwbedrijven gebruiken voor hun gietwater vooral regen water dat ze opvangen en opslaan in waterbekkens. Als deze bekkens leeg raken, stappen veel bedrijven in het Westland over op brak of zout grondwater, omdat de kwaliteit van het oppervlaktewater onvoldoende is. “Het grondwater onttrekken ze, waarna ze het ontzilten met omgekeerde osmose”, legt KWR-onderzoeker Marcel Paalman uit. “Vervolgens pompen ze het zoute concentraat (brijn) terug in een dieper grondwaterpakket. Deze brijninjecties zijn moeilijk te controleren en daardoor beleidsmatig ongewenst.”

Met vegetatieopnames of plots — handmatige inventarisaties van de voorkomende planten op een gebied van twee bij twee meter — bepaalt hij per plot de gemiddelde indicatiewaarden. Deze waarden geven de voorkeur van plantensoorten weer voor factoren als bodemvocht, voedselrijkdom, bodemzuurgraad en het zout gehalte van de bodem.

Roelofsen uses herbaceous vegetation in Ameland for his research. By means of vegetation surveys — manual inventories of plants occurring in a plot measuring two metres by two metres — he can establish the average indicator values per plot. These values reflect the preferences of the plant species with regard to factors such as soil moisture, nutrient richness, soil acidity and soil salinity. Reflectance values

Collaboration with Wetsus, Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology Since 2007, KWR has been participating in the Wetsus research programme, which is part of the Water Technology Innovation Programme of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. Vewin is also a participant. In 2010, the collaboration between KWR and Wetsus was intensified, and KWR started a location in Leeuwarden (see right).

It integrates the various components of the water cycle, and stimulates local collaborations between water cycle partners. Waternet and Water Supply Company Limburg work together within Asellus. In 2011, the collaboration is to be continued under the name of ‘Watercycle Research Platform’ (WRP). The following activities were conducted within Asellus in 2010:

Met deze resultaten is een groot ontwikkelproject opgezet met subsidie van AgentschapNL. • Emissie van koper in de watercyclus. Gebleken is dat de belang rijkste emissies - bovenleidingen van trams en vuurwerk — niet rechtstreeks te beïnvloeden zijn door maatregelen bij de zuivering van drinken afvalwater.

• Research into the greenhouse gas emissions of the water cycle. The results will be presented in 2011. • An analysis of the water cycle’s energy balance. This again demonstrated that the heat added in households is an important part of the total energy consumption in the water cycle • Research into the drivers for the WWTP effluent reuse by industry. • A literature survey of Dynamic Filtration for STOWA. On the basis of the results, a large development project was set up with a subsidy from NL Agency. • Research into copper emissions in the water cycle. It would seem that the most significant emission sources — overhead tram-lines and fireworks — cannot be directly influenced by adapting operation during water or wastewater treatment.

HeliXeR ontwikkelt business cases voor innovaties op het gebied van Water & Gezond heid en biedt daarmee oplossingen voor behoeften vanuit de markt, op het gebied van water en gezondheid.

In 2010, KWR, Brabant Water, Waterboard de Dommel, TNO and Philips formed the HeliXeR collaboration. HeliXeR develops business cases for innovations in the field of Water and Health, providing solutions to needs expressed in the market. Examples of HeliXeR cases in 2010 are:

Begin 2010 is deze case afgerond. Hoewel uit de marktverkenning bleek dat deze test bestaande tests niet vervangt, heeft de case geleid tot het verder ontwikkelen van de technologie voor laboratoria. • Dehydratie bij ouderen: hoe voorkom je uitdroging bij ouderen? KWR droeg bij aan het in kaart brengen van het probleem en mogelijke oplossingsrichtingen. In workshops met onder andere de GGD en Brabant Water zijn de belangrijkste oplossingsrichtingen uit gewerkt en is er gestart met de realisatie. • Biophys: een innovatieve combinatie van vergistingsmethoden waarmee meer slib omgezet kan worden in energie. Zo blijft minder restafval over en wordt er meer energie opgewekt.

• Coli case: KWR contributed to a technology assessment study for a simple test for rapid detection of E.coli bacteria in drinking water in developing countries. This case was concluded in early 2010. Although the study indicated that the test would not replace existing ones, the case did lead to further development of the technology for laboratories. • Dehydration in the elderly: how to prevent it? KWR contributed to the delineation of the problem and definition of solution paths. The most important solution paths were elaborated in workshops with GGD (Municipal Health Authority) and Brabant Water among others, and a beginning was made with the realisation. • Biophys: an innovative combination of digestion methods to optimise disintegration processes and increase energy efficiency. The result: less waste and more energy. At the end of 2010 HeliXeR’s mission was revised and it was decided to shift its focus to local and regional SMEs. KWR’s close involvement has contrib-

In januari 2010 is het Inzetbaarheidsbudget (IB) ingevoerd en is de start van het Flexibel Arbeidsvoorwaarden Budget (FAB, invoering per 1 januari 2011) voorbereid. Daarnaast is er een thuiswerkregeling vastgelegd. “Met meer flexibiliteit vergroten medewerkers hun eigen inzetbaarheid. Dat is het doel van de nieuwe regelingen binnen de CAO”, zegt Van Oene.

Medewerkers hebben nu vrije keuze om zelf te bepalen wanneer ze dit willen ontvangen. Van Oene: “We bieden meer mogelijkheden. Dat maakt ons tot een aantrekkelijke werkgever.”

Willem Koerselmanprijs stimuleert wetenschappelijke output In 1996 publiceerde onderzoeker en projectleider Willem Koerselman, samen met toenmalig collega Arthur Meuleman, het artikel The vegetation N:P ratio: a new tool to detect the nature of nutrient limitation in het Journal of Applied Ecology. Toen Koerselman in 2009 bij KWR vertrok, was dit peer reviewed artikel veruit het meest geciteerde KWRartikel in de wetenschappelijke literatuur.

Willem Koerselman Award stimulates scientific output In 1996, Willem Koerselman, researcher and project leader, together with his then-colleague Arthur Meuleman, published an article in the Journal of Applied Ecology entitled ‘The vegetation N:P ratio: a new tool to detect the nature of nutrient limitation.’ When Koerselman left KWR in 2009, this peer-reviewed article was by far the most quoted KWR article in the scientific literature.

Als eerbetoon aan Koerselman en als stimulans voor KWR-onderzoekers na hem om goede wetenschappelijke artikelen te publiceren, is de ‘Willem Koerselman Prijs’ ingesteld. De prijs — een beeld naar gelijkenis van Koerselman — wordt jaarlijks toegekend aan die auteur(s), werkzaam bij KWR, wiens artikel in een peer-reviewed wetenschappelijk tijdschrift in het voorbije jaar het meest is geciteerd.

As a tribute to Koerselman, and as a stimulant for KWR researchers to follow his example in the publication of quality scientific articles, the ‘Willem Koerselman Award’ was instituted. The award — a sculpture representing Koerselman — is attributed annually to the KWR author(s) whose peer-reviewed article is most quoted over the preceding year.
