INLEIDING Aborigines zijn de eerste bewoners van Australië en het oudste volk dat daar nu leeft. Daar hebben ze hun naam aan te danken. Die is afgeleid van ab origine, Dat is Latijn voor vanaf het begin. Ook wordt het bijvoeglijk naamwoord Aboriginal gebruikt zoals in ‘van Aboriginal afkomst’. Volgens geschiedkundigen vestigen de Aborigines zich ongeveer 40.000 jaar geleden in Australië. Ze zijn afkomstig uit Zuidoost-Azië. Sommige mensen weten dat de boemerang door Aborigines is uitgevonden en dat Aborigines een uitgeholde houten stok bespelen die didgeridoo genoemd wordt. Soms halen de Aborigines het nieuws. In oktober 2007 bijvoorbeeld toen een groep Aborigines naar Nederland kwam om speciale wetspalen in te wijden en de Nederlanders te vergeven voor hun verovering van Australië in 1606. De Nederlanders waren de eerste blanken die toen voet aan wal zetten op de Australische kust. Na de Nederlanders volgden de Engelsen die hen definitief onderwierpen. Maar vaak halen de Aborigines het nieuws niet. De Aborigines zijn een raadselachtig volk met een unieke cultuur en religie. Ze geloven bijvoorbeeld dat ze hun land niet bezitten, maar in bruikleen hebben van geesten die het land geschapen hebben. Van die geesten stammen ze af en ze hebben nog steeds contact met die geesten.

Landbouw kennen ze niet. Ze jagen en verzamelen voedsel en water om in hun onderhoud te voorzien. Ze kennen geen schrift. Hun geschiedenis bestaat uit verhalen die van generatie op generatie zijn doorgegeven. Waar dient een boemerang eigenlijk voor? Welke andere werktuigen gebruiken ze? Ze wonen in kleine groepen die over enorme stukken land verspreid zijn, maar waarom dan wel? Over deze en andere zaken willen we jullie wegwijs maken met dit informatiepakket. Eerst vertellen we over de religie en de muziek van de Aborigines (pag. 2). Daarna vertelt het Aborigine-meisje Lynette over haar dagelijks leven (pag. 8). Vervolgens laten we zien wat er met de Aborigines en hun woongebieden is gebeurd nadat begin 17e eeuw de eerste Europeanen, zeevaarders uit Nederland, Australië hebben bezocht. Ze raakten steeds meer hun land en middelen van bestaan kwijt en werden onderdrukt (pag. 14). Ten slotte vertellen we hoe ze steeds meer opkomen voor hun cultuur en rechten en wat ze daarmee hebben bereikt (pag. 20). 1
DE CULTUUR VAN DE ABORIGINES Hier maken jullie kennis met de religie, de cultuur en de levensgewoonten van Aborigines zoals die waren tot er Europeanen naar Australië kwamen. Religie Aborigines geloven zelf niet dat ze uit ZuidoostAzië zijn gekomen. Wel geloven ze in de Droomtijd. Die begint als vooroudergeesten, geesten waar ze van afstammen, de mensen en de natuur scheppen. Ook stellen geesten de regels op waar de Aborigines zich aan moeten houden. Daardoor weten ze precies hoe ze moeten leven. Nadat de geesten de wereld gemaakt hebben, trekken ze zich terug in de natuur. Ze zijn er nog steeds en hebben de vorm van planten en dieren. De plekken waar ze zich teruggetrokken hebben, heten droomplaatsen. Aborigines geloven dat de geesten nog steeds in staat zijn om nieuw leven te maken en dat ook doen. Dus is de Droomtijd nog niet afgelopen. Aborigines zien het als hun taak om de wereld, die de geesten gemaakt hebben, in stand te houden. Dat kunnen ze doen door te leven zoals de geesten willen. De natuur mogen ze gebruiken, maar niet veranderen (bijvoorbeeld geen landbouw toepassen). Ze houden contact met de geesten door rituelen uit te voeren op de droomplaatsen. Aborigines geloven dat de geesten hen ook het leven gegeven hebben. Als een vrouw voor het eerst merkt dat ze zwanger is, geeft ze haar kind een naam die iets zegt over de plek waar ze dat heeft gemerkt. Dat doet ze omdat Aborigines geloven dat de geest, die in die omgeving aanwezig is, zich kenbaar maakt in het nieuwe leven. Dan wordt een plant, dier of bijvoorbeeld een rots symbool van die geest. Daardoor wordt het levende wezen of voorwerp een totem. Het kind zal zich zijn leven lang verbonden voelen met die totem.

Een Aborigine die een kangoeroe als totem heeft, zal nooit op dit dier jagen of zijn vlees eten. Hij moet ervoor zorgen dat de kangoeroe blijft bestaan. Hij is er zelf uit voortgekomen en zijn eigen bestaan hangt ervan af. Mensen die dezelfde totem hebben, voelen zich met elkaar verwant. Dit geeft een groepsband. Een paar keer per jaar komt de groep bijeen om rituelen uit te voeren ter ere van de geest.
Bij Aborigines neemt de verering van de vooroudergeesten een grote plaats in hun dagelijks leven in. Bij feesten en rituelen ter ere van de geesten wordt veel gedanst en muziek gemaakt. Verderop beschrijven we enkele muziekinstrumenten van Aborigines. Ook beschilderen Aborigines zich vaak voor rituelen. Ten slotte maken ze vaak boombastschilderingen en andere afbeeldingen van de voorouders. 2
Scheppingsverhaal: hoe de dieren in Australië kwamen Elk van de Aborigine-stammen heeft zijn eigen versie van het scheppingsverhaal. In de versie van een stam uit Noord-Australië verschijnen eerst de mensen en dan pas de dieren en planten. Lang geleden, in de Droomtijd, waren er alleen mensen. Er waren nog geen dieren en vogels, geen bomen en geen struiken. Het landschap was vlak, er waren geen heuvels of bergen. Goorialla, de regenboogslang, richtte zich op en ging op zoek naar zijn stam. Hij reisde heel Australië door, van het zuiden naar het noorden. Hij kwam aan bij Cape York in het noordoosten van Australië. Daar maakte hij een grote rode berg, Narabullgan. Hij luisterde goed, maar hoorde alleen stemmen van mensen die vreemde talen spraken. “Dit is niet mijn land”, zei hij, “Ik kan de mensen hier niet verstaan. Ik moet verder reizen, op zoek naar mijn volk.” En hij reisde door het hele land. Iedere avond stopte hij om te luisteren of hij de stemmen van zijn volk al hoorde. Op zijn reis maakte zijn grote lijf heuvels en dalen in het landschap. Op een dag hoorde hij mensen zingen. Hij hoorde: “Ahrr, Ahrr, AHRR.” “Dàt zijn mijn mensen”, zei Goorialla. Hij reisde verder naar het noorden en het gezang werd steeds luider. Op een kruispunt van twee rivieren vond Goorialla zijn volk. Ze waren aan het dansen en zingen. Voorzichtig kroop hij dichterbij. Hij verstopte zich achter struiken en bekeek hen lange tijd. Toen kwam hij achter de struiken te voorschijn en werd door zijn volk verwelkomd. Hij zei hun: “Jullie dansen niet goed, en jullie zijn ook niet goedgekleed. Kijk naar mij, dan zal ik het jullie voordoen.” Goorialla leerde hen hoe zij zich moesten beschilderen. Hij leerde hen hoe ze moesten dansen en ze deden hem na tot ze er moe van waren. Opeens kwam er een grote storm en de mensen bouwden snel hutten om in te schuilen. Twee jongemannen, de Bil-bilbroertjes, zochten nog een plaats om te schuilen. Ze vroegen aan hun grootmoeder of ze bij haar konden schuilen, maar zij zei: “Mijn hut is al vol, jullie kunnen er niet meer bij.” Toen gingen de broers naar Goorialla. Ze vroegen hem of hij een schuilplaats voor hen had. Eerst wilde ook Goorialla hen niet helpen, maar toen het nog harder begon te regenen, zei hij: “Oké, wacht maar even, dan maak ik mijn hut groter, zodat jullie erbij kunnen.” Hij opende zijn grote bek en zei: “Kom nu maar binnen.” De broers liepen naar binnen en Goorialla slikte hen door. Toen vroeg hij zich af wat het volk zou zeggen als ze de jongens misten. En hij vertrok naar de enige hoge berg in het land, Bonabunara. 3

De volgende ochtend miste het volk de broers. Ze vonden sporen en begrepen al snel dat de slang hen had opgegeten. Ze besloten op jacht te gaan naar Goorialla. De slang was inmiddels bovenop de berg in slaap gevallen. Na dagen reizen kwam het volk bij de berg aan. Allerlei mannen probeerden de berg te beklimmen, maar allen vielen weer naar beneden. Toen kwamen twee Wango-broers en zeiden: “Wij zullen de Bil-bil-broertjes redden.” Na dagen en nachten klimmen kwamen ze bij de slang die nog steeds lag te slapen. Ze sneden hem open en er kwamen twee prachtige papegaaien uit, die de kleuren hadden van de regenboogslang. Het waren de Bil-bil-broers. Goorialla sliep maar door, tot zijn lege maag hem wakker maakte. Hij dacht: “Hier klopt iets niet.” Hij keek op en zag dat zijn lekkere hapje gestolen was. Goorialla werd verschrikkelijk boos. De berg begon te trillen van zijn boosheid. Hij begon rotsblokken te gooien, zodat er heuvels en bergen ontstonden. De mensen waren zo bang, dat sommigen vluchtten en anderen zich in allerlei dieren en planten veranderden. Zo kwamen de dieren en planten op aarde. Zo is het gebeurd in de Droomtijd. Door Goorialla's boosheid bleef er maar een heel klein stukje van de berg over. De slang verdween in zee, waar hij nu nog steeds is. De mensen die nu leven, moeten zorgen voor de planten en dieren, die eerst mensen waren. Jacht- en verzameltechnieken De Aborigines leven van de jacht en het verzamelen van voedsel. Iedere stam heeft een eigen gebied waarin men rondtrekt op zoek naar voedsel en water. De grootte van het gebied hangt af van wat de natuur oplevert. Dat hangt vooral af van het klimaat. De vrouw links heeft een graafstok in de hand. In ieder gebied leven niet meer mensen dan de natuur kan voeden. Als het aantal Aborigines in een gebied te groot wordt, kunnen die niet voldoende voedsel verzamelen. Om aan voedsel te komen, moet de stam zich opsplitsen in groepen van één of hooguit enkele families. Die trekken telkens naar een andere plek. Om die reden hebben de groepsleden niet veel bezittingen. Mannen hebben speren, knotsen en houten schilden. Vrouwen hebben allerlei voorwerpen om mee te verzamelen, zoals gevlochten tassen, houten kommen, een maalsteen en een graafstok. Ze weten precies welk voedsel op welke plek en op welk tijdstip rijp is. De taken bij het verzamelen van voedsel liggen strikt vast. De mannen jagen op groot wild, zoals kangoeroes en emoes. De vrouwen maken jacht op klein wild en verzamelen honing en eetbare knollen en wortels. Een van de voorwerpen die de vrouwen vroeger bij zich droegen was de coolamon, een soort ‘rugzakje’ gemaakt van boomschors of hout. Ze deden er houtskool in, water of eten. In een grote coolamon kon een baby worden vervoerd.

Voor het vergaren van voedsel gebruiken Aborigines allerlei werktuigen. Voor vrouwen is het belangrijkste werktuig de graafstok. Die is van een stevig soort hout zoals ijzerhout. Eerst wordt aan een van de uiteinden een punt gemaakt, dan wordt hij in vuur gehard. Met de stok graven ze wortels en knollen uit de grond en kleine dieren als hagedissen en aardwormen. Aborigines stampen met hun voeten op de grond. Dan worden hagedissen in de grond nieuwsgierig en komen ze naar de oppervlak. Die worden met een graafstok doodgeslagen. De vrouwen weten precies waar voedsel gevonden kan worden. Vaak kennen ze iedere boom en plant in een gebied en weten ook precies wanneer alles rijp is. Ze plukken nooit alle vruchten, maar laten altijd wat over. Daardoor kan de natuur zich herstellen. Ze letten ook op dieren die hen op het spoor van lekkere dingen kunnen brengen. Ze letten er bijvoorbeeld op naar welke boom bijen vliegen. In die boom kunnen ze honing vinden en weghalen. Naast de graafstok bezitten ze alleen houten kommen en gevlochten manden en tassen. Sommige manden zijn los gevlochten, andere zó strak dat er geen honing en zelfs geen water uit kan weglekken. De mannen jagen op kangoeroes, emoes en ander groot wild. Ze hebben méér werktuigen dan de vrouwen. Ze gebruiken onder meer speren. Die zijn van hout, hun punten van kangoeroebot, haaientanden of een ander materiaal. Sommige speren hebben weerhaken. Andere die voor de visvangst gebruikt worden, hebben twee of drie punten. Voor de jacht worden speren van verschillende lengte gebruikt. Ze kunnen twee meter lang zijn, maar ook wel vier. Soms zijn ze gemaakt van drie delen. Die kunnen van elkaar afgehaald worden zodat versleten delen vervangen kunnen worden. Wanneer een dier nog ver weg is, gebruiken jagers een speerwerper (woomera). Die maakt de arm waarmee de speer geworpen wordt, langer. Daarmee kunnen jagers hun speer nauwkeuriger en met meer vaart naar het dier werpen. De speerwerper heeft een pal die in de holle onderkant van de speer past. Bij het werpen schiet de speer los van de pal. Jagers vangen kangoeroes ook met netten. Bij het vangen van vis gebruiken ze naast speren ook fuiken en hengels. De Aborigines kennen meer manieren om dieren te vangen. Ze maken jacht op emoes, maar deze vogels kunnen zo hard lopen dat het moeilijk is om ze met een speer te raken. Maar de jagers kennen een soort plant die je slaperig maakt als je ervan eet. Ze doen delen van die planten in een poel waar emoes uit drinken. Die raken té versuft om snel te kunnen rennen en zijn daardoor makkelijk te vangen. Jagers gebruiken dezelfde truc om vissen te vangen die zó snel kunnen zwemmen dat ze moeilijk te vangen zijn. Ze doen delen van die planten in een poel waar de vissen inzitten. Die raken versuft en kunnen makkelijk worden gevangen. Maar water in poelen waar de verdovende planten in zitten is niet als drinkwater te gebruiken. Pas tijdens de regentijd kan dat weer. Dan komt er vers water in de poel. 5
Boemerang De Aborigines gebruiken ook een werktuig waarmee ze beroemd zijn geworden, de boemerang. Het is een platte gebogen stok die de lucht in wordt gegooid. De werper geeft hem daarbij een draaiende beweging. Vervolgens suist hij in een boog naar de werper terug. Althans, dat denkt iedereen. Maar niet iedere boemerang die geworpen wordt, doet dat. Jagers gebruiken een zware boemerang om dieren op afstand met een harde klap te doden. Hij keert niet terug naar de werper. Wel geeft de jager hem bij het werpen een draaiende beweging zodat hij het doelwit met méér kracht raakt dan bijvoorbeeld een steen. Jagers gebruiken de zware boemerang ook als slagwapen. Aborigines gebruiken ook lichte boemerangs die wél terugvliegen naar degene die hem geworpen heeft. Meestal doen ze dat bij spelen, wedstrijden en godsdienstige activiteiten. Voor de jacht wordt hij alleen gebruikt om eenden te vangen. Dat gaat als volgt: De jager verstopt zich bij een plas. Wanneer een vlucht eenden nadert, werpt hij zijn boemerang erover. Tegelijkertijd bootst hij de schreeuw van een kiekendief (een roofvogel) na. De dieren worden misleid door de kreten en het silhouet van de boemerang. Daardoor duiken ze omlaag in de netten die verderop zijn neergezet. De boemerang keert terug naar de werper. Waterbron in een wortel Les Hiddins (geboren in 1946) is een Australische militair die veel van de Australische natuur afweet. Hij loopt door de woestijn in Midden-Australië. Hij is op zoek naar water. Niets ontsnapt aan zijn scherpe ogen: de sporen van kleine dieren, de vorm van de rotsen, de weinige verspreid groeiende planten. Hij blijft voor een schijnbare dode stam staan. Er hangen een paar verlepte blaadjes aan. Hij begint met een stok te graven; de stam wordt dikker, een halve meter onder de grond komt een wortel zo groot als een voetbal te voorschijn. Hij trekt die omhoog, bekrast hem met zijn mes en wringt hem uit. Er verschijnt een druppel vocht, de enige in een omtrek van 100 kilometer. Hiddins drinkt. Zo laat hij een voorbeeld zien van hoe bedreven Aborigines zijn in het zoeken naar voedsel, drinken, geneeskrachtige planten of een schuilplaats op plekken waar je niet zou verwachten iets bruikbaars te vinden. Mondelinge overlevering Aborigines geloven dat alle levende wezens één grote gemeenschap vormen die in de Droomtijd door de vooroudergeesten is gemaakt. Die geesten hebben de Aborigines verteld hoe ze moeten leven. Nog steeds zijn de geesten aan het werk opdat de seizoenen elkaar opvolgen, de plantengroei in stand blijft en de dieren zich voortplanten. Wat er in de Droomtijd allemaal is gebeurd, wordt verteld in talrijke mythen en legenden van de verschillende stammen. Die vormen samen de geschiedenis van de Aborigines. Ze gaan over de reizen en avonturen van de vooroudergeesten, die zowel mens als dier kunnen zijn. Ook komen daar reusachtige dieren in voor die nu niet meer te vinden zijn, zoals reuzenslangen en de reuzenkangoeroe. 6
Ook worden er magische plaatsen in genoemd zoals Ayers Rock (Uluru). Verder wordt de reis van de vooroudergeesten naar Australië beschreven. Ten slotte kun je in die verhalen leren wat je wel en niet met de natuur kan doen en hoe je met andere mensen moet omgaan. Deze verhalen vormen nog steeds een leidraad voor Aborigines. De Aborigines kennen geen schrift. De verhalen zijn nooit opgeschreven. Ze worden mondeling doorgegeven aan de volgende generaties, vooral in gezangen. Uluru –in het Nationaal Park Uluru- is voor de aborigines een magische rots, die alleen beklommen mag worden tijdens heel speciale gelegenheden. En dan alleen door stamoudsten. Maar de berg is ook heel populair bij toeristen. De aborigines zagen tandenknarsend aan dat drommen toeristen Uluru beklommen. Maar toen er rond 1970 plannen waren om hotels aan de voet van de berg te bouwen, was voor hen de maat vol. Ze spanden een juridisch proces aan en verkregen uiteindelijk meer inspraak over het reilen en zeilen in het nationale park. In 1985 werd het nationale park hun officieel eigendom van de Aborigines, waarna ze het voor 100 jaar in bruikleen gaven aan de overheid.
Muziekinstrumenten Door het mondeling doorgeven van verhalen via gezangen is muziek niet weg te denken uit het dagelijks leven van Aborigines. Om mee te kunnen draaien in een Aboriginal gemeenschap, moeten leden hiervan die muziek goed kennen. Immers, in gezangen wordt verteld over leefregels en wetten van de gemeenschap. Ook moeten de leden melodieën en teksten goed kennen waarmee bijvoorbeeld regen wordt opgewekt, steun wordt gegeven bij een moeilijke bevalling, een hete wind tot draaien wordt gebracht of kwade machten of ziekten worden bezworen. De zang wordt ritmisch begeleid met allerlei slaginstrumenten, bijvoorbeeld het klappen in de handen of tegen het lichaam of met klapstokjes. Dat zijn houten staven die recht zijn of de vorm van een boemerang hebben. Ook wordt een didgeridoo gebruikt. Dat is een houten buis van gemiddeld 135 centimeter lengte. Het is een blaasinstrument, het enige blaasinstrument van de Aborigines. Hoewel in andere culturen soortgelijke instrumenten voorkomen, is de didgeridoo uniek omdat voor het bespelen hiervan een aparte blaastechniek nodig is die alleen bij de Aborigines bekend is. Net als de boemerang is de didgeridoo ook buiten Australië bekend geworden. Zowel componisten van klassieke muziek en jazzmusici als Aboriginal rockbands maken er gebruik van. De Aboriginal gezangen zijn van verschillende opbouw, vorm en lengte. Die hangen af van waar ze voor dienen. Wel hebben ze vaak een dalende melodie die duidelijk herkenbaar is. Vaak wordt de zang begeleid door dansen. Jiri Kylián (een Tsjechische balletmaker) en andere makers van balletten hebben bij de Aborigines inspiratie opgedaan en elementen van Aboriginal dansen opgenomen in hun eigen balletten. 7
EEN ABORIGINAL FAMILIE IN AUSTRALIË “Hallo, mijn naam is Lynette Joshua, ik ben 11 jaar. Ik woon in Hodgson Down in het Noordelijke Territorium van Australië. Ik heb twee grote zusters, Mildred en Lillian, een broer die Lancen heet en twee kleine zusjes, Sandra en Rosemary. Wij wonen met onze ouders in het Kamp op de fokkerij van Hodgson Down. Vroeger was dit een grote veehouderij, maar die is nu dicht. Ons kamp heet Minyerri. Het is vernoemd naar de grote billabong (waterplaats) vlakbij het kamp. Wij noemen het ‘het Kamp’ omdat de oorspronkelijke bewoners hier hun kamp hadden toen de veehouderij werd opgericht, in 1885. Hodgson Down ligt ongeveer 600 kilometer van Darwin, de hoofdstad van het Noordelijke Territorium. Het is een lange reis van Darwin naar Hodgson Down. Je kunt met de bus naar Mataranka. Dat is hier vandaan de dichtstbijzijnde stad, ongeveer 160 kilometer van het Kamp. En dan moet je wachten op een lift naar Minyerri, want bussen kunnen niet helemaal in Hodgson Down komen. Ze rijden alleen op de hoofdwegen.

Je kunt ons niet opbellen, maar we kunnen wel berichten krijgen via onze nieuwe zender/ ontvanger. Iedere morgen om half acht zet Leslie, mijn vader, hem aan. We wachten dan op een oproep van de radiopost in Darwin. Die roept: “Victor acht Lima Lima, Kamp Minyerri meldt u alstublieft.” Mijn vader is blij dat we een radio hebben. Tijdens het natte seizoen, waarin het erg veel regent, zijn de wegen vaak onbegaanbaar. Dan kunnen we alleen via de radio hulp krijgen of berichten sturen. Het natte seizoen begint omstreeks Kerstmis en duurt ongeveer vier maanden. Dan begint het droge seizoen. In die maanden valt er geen druppel regen. De rivieren drogen uit. Alleen in de billabongs blijft water staan. In ons kamp wonen ongeveer tachtig mensen. Er staan meer dan vijftien huizen, een grote opslagschuur, een schuur voor bijeenkomsten, een kliniekje en een rijtje douches. Ons huis is van hout, golfplaten en bakstenen. Alle huizen lijken op dat van ons. De meeste huizen hebben maar één kamer en een veranda aan de voorkant. Daar zitten we de meeste tijd, lekker in de schaduw, of we zitten bij de billabong.

Susan, mijn moeder, kookt altijd buiten. We staan elke morgen vroeg op en moeder zet dan thee en maakt dampers voor het ontbijt. Iedereen weet hoe je dampers moet maken. Je mengt meel, bakpoeder, zout en water en kneedt het tot een glad deeg. Dan maak je van dat deeg kleine, ronde, platte koekjes. De dampers worden dan in het vuur gelegd en met hete as bedekt. Na een tijdje zijn ze klaar. Ze zijn een beetje gerezen en hebben een mooi korstje. Ik houd het meest van dampers met stroop. Soms maakt mijn moeder brood in een echte kampoven. Dat is een grote ijzeren pot die op het vuur staat. Die pot heeft een speciale deksel waarop je hete kolen moet leggen. Dat brood smaakt heerlijk, maar het duurt erg lang voordat het klaar is. Meestal kookt mijn moeder en ze maakt ook alles schoon. Als ik niet naar school hoef, help ik haar. We doen de was bij de kraan die buiten staat, of in de billabong. Al het water dat we gebruiken voor de was of om te drinken komt uit de billabong. Ik help ook vaak door op mijn jongere zusjes te passen. De oudere kinderen helpen altijd mee op de jongeren te passen, vooral als ze buiten het kamp spelen. Na het ontbijt stuurt mijn moeder ons naar school. Alleen Rosemary blijft thuis, want zij is nog te jong om naar school te gaan. Als we weg zijn, gaat mijn moeder een beetje wassen. Soms gaat ze naar de billabong om naar klein wild te zoeken. Wanneer ze het niet zo druk heeft, speelt ze graag kaart of ze praat met vrienden en kennissen.
Sandra, Mildred, Lancen en ik gaan in Minyerri naar school. Onze school bestaat uit twee caravans vlak bij het kamp. De school heeft maar twee klassen. Ik zit bij de eersteklassers, die de Gouden Adelaars genoemd worden. Sandra zit in de kleuterklas. Die kinderen worden de Kievieten genoemd, naar de luidruchtige, kleine zwart-witte vogeltjes die hier leven. We hebben twee onderwijzers. Ze wonen in een caravan vlak bij de school. We hebben ook nog een hulponderwijzeres. Zij woont in het kamp. Zij geeft meestal les aan de kleine kinderen die nog niet zo goed Engels spreken. De meeste mensen in het kamp horen bij de Alawa-stam. Alawa is de taal die door de oude mensen in deze streek nog gesproken wordt. Er zijn niet veel kinderen die Alawa spreken, maar als de oude mensen verhalen vertellen, kan ik het wel volgen. De meeste mensen spreken Kriol (inheems Engels) met elkaar. Op school leren we Engels, wiskunde en andere bekende vakken. Soms komt een van de oude mensen uit het kamp naar onze school om ons les in het Alawa te geven. Maar meestal pikken we het Alawa wel op als we het in het kamp horen. We hebben geen elektriciteit in het kamp. Op school hebben we een generator, dus daar gaan we wel eens naar een film kijken. Die wordt dan vertoond op de wand van de caravan. Het is heerlijk koel 's avonds. Heerlijk om buiten te zitten en naar een film te kijken. We hebben ook een trampoline op school en de kinderen maken er dan ruzie over wie er aan de beurt is.

Het is niet zo gemakkelijk voor de mannen om werk te krijgen. Daarom zoeken ze naar andere manieren om geld te verdien. Mijn oom, Ashwood maakt didgeridoos en verkoopt ze aan winkels in de steden. Didgeridoos zijn lange uitgeholde boomtakken. Als je erin blaast, komt er een laag, dreunend geluid uit. De mannen blazen op de didgeridoos en slaan twee stokjes tegen elkaar en maken zo muziek. Deze muziek wordt gespeeld als we zingen en dansen. De dansers beschilderen zichzelf met witte klei. Die dansen zijn wel wat anders dan discodansen omdat de mannen en vrouwen altijd apart dansen. Didgeridoo, Didjeridu of Yidaki Wij de mensen van mijn land, Australië -vertelde de Europeanen onswaren daar al meer dan zestigduizend jaar. Maar nu weten wij, wij waren er al sinds het begin van de tijd. Wij zijn de oudste levende cultuur op aarde. En we hebben het oudste bekende instrument, dat wij de yidaki noemen, of wat de Europeanen de didgeridoo noemen. Dit instrument is een gedeelte van een boom, waarin termieten de weg naar binnen eten, terwijl ze buitenkant intact laten om hun lichaam tegen de zon te beschermen. En wanneer de boom sterft en op de grond valt, kappen de Aborigines het eind af en wordt het een didgeridoo. De meest geschikte boom voor een didgeridoo is de Eucalyptusboom. Hier zie je zo’n boom. En in die boom zit een heel bekend Australisch diertje, de koala. Het diertje leeft uitsluitend van de bladeren van de eucalyptusboom.
Voordat de mununga (blanken) kwamen, was het land van de Alawa's. Mijn oma vertelt me veel verhalen over ons land. Zij vertelt dat het land in de Droomtijd is ontstaan. Het is door rondreizende geesten gemaakt. Oma zegt dat de billabong van Minyerri door Wadjurndu, de Goannageest, gemaakt is. Daarom beschouwen wij de billabong als een deel van de ‘Goanna-droom’ en mag niemand met een geweer in het water schieten. Niemand heeft ooit meegemaakt dat de billabong opgedroogd was. De mensen uit het kamp blijven het liefst hier, ze voelen zich met het land verbonden en kunnen zo goed voor de ‘droomplaatsen’ (zie pag. 2), zoals de billabong, zorgen. Er komen dan een heleboel mensen. Zoals andere mensen naar de kerk gaan, zo gaan wij naar de ceremoniën (rituelen). Deze bijeenkomsten noemen we corrobees. Zo verstevigen we de band met de ‘droomtijdgeesten’ (vooroudergeesten uit de Droomtijd) die het land gemaakt hebben. We noemen dat ‘dromen’. Verscheidene ceremoniën zijn heilig. Deze zijn vaak alleen voor de volwassenen. Maar aan de andere doet iedereen mee. In de ceremoniëntijd zijn alle mensen die het ‘dromen’ met elkaar delen, samen. Ze behoren allemaal tot een zelfde ‘skin-groep’ of clan. De mensen zijn allemaal door hun ‘dromen’ aan hun land verbonden. Alle Alawa's behoren tot een skin -groep. Er zijn acht verschillende skin-groepen. Iedere groep heeft een naam voor de vrouwen en een andere voor de mannen. Je eigen skin-naam hangt af van die van je moeder. Mijn moeders skin-naam is Nangari, dus mijn zusjes en ik horen bij de ‘Nangari-skin’. En mijn broer heeft de mannelijke skin-naam: Jangala. Zelfs de kleine kinderen kennen hun skin-naam. Een skin-groep vormt een soort familie, ook als je niet echt familie van elkaar bent. Ik noem iedere vrouw uit mijn moeders skin-groep ‘moeder’ en alle mannen ‘vader’. Zo zijn dus alle mensen in het Noordelijke Territorium met elkaar verbonden. Twee jaar geleden werkte mijn vader als hulponderwijzer op onze school in Minyerri. Mijn vader vertelde dat veel stammen een inheemse onderwijzer wilden hebben. Hij ging naar Batchelor om daar een opleiding voor inheemse leraren te volgen. Batchelor is een stad ongeveer 100 kilometer van Darwin vandaan. Dat is veel te ver van Hodgson Down en daarom gingen we allemaal mee. 10
We woonden daar in een nieuw huis, vlak bij het college waar mijn vader studeerde. Dat huis had een moderne keuken met een elektrisch fornuis en een koelkast. We hadden daar ook een toilet binnen en we hadden zelfs ieder een bed. We aten meestal in de kantine van het college, of we kochten eten in de winkel en dan gingen we thuis koken. Op het college was ook een televisie en eens in de zoveel tijd werd er een dansfeest georganiseerd. Ik ging natuurlijk in die tijd in Batchelor naar school. De school was veel groter dan de onze in Minyerri. Er waren twee trampolines op de speelplaats. Er zaten nog een paar inheemse kinderen op school. De meeste waren hier omdat een van hun ouders op het college studeerde. In de weekeinden gingen we wel eens winkelen in Darwin. We kochten dan meestal goedkope kleren in een van de vele winkeltjes. Mildred en ik keken naar de auto's en zochten naar fruit- en ijswinkeltjes. Mijn vader studeerde af in het midden van het droge seizoen. We gingen terug naar Hodgson Down, waar mijn vader tot hoofd van het Minyerri Kamp gekozen werd. Nu mijn vader hoofd is, moet hij voor de bestellingen van het eten voor het kamp zorgen. Ons voedsel komt uit Katherine, een stad die ongeveer 260 kilometer bij ons vandaan ligt. Mijn vader bestelt al het voedsel via de radio. Voordat we die hadden, raakte het voedsel wel eens op en dan moesten we honger lijden totdat het lukte Katherine te bereiken. Nu gaat dat dus een stuk sneller. In het droge seizoen brengt een vrachtwagen iedere twee weken nieuwe voorraden uit Katherine. Als de auto er is, moet mijn vader alle voorraden verdelen. De meeste mensen in het kamp betalen mee aan de inkopen. We bestellen iedere keer meel, suiker, thee, zout, bakpoeder, melkpoeder en blikken fruit of vlees. Maar hij brengt ook andere voorraden, zoals lucifers, tabak en kogels. Voordat het natte seizoen begint en de wegen ondergelopen zijn, bestelt mijn vader genoeg eten om die vier maanden door te komen. Het is wel gebeurd dat de vrachtwagen een van de beekjes niet kon oversteken. De chauffeur moest toen omdraaien en alle voorraden in Roper Valley achterlaten, 45 kilometer van Minyerri. Enkele mannen hebben de voorraden toen met de nieuwe tractor moeten ophalen. Ze brachten alles op de tractor mee en sloegen het op in de voorraadschuur. We hoeven niet al ons eten in Katherine te bestellen. De mensen uit ons kamp gaan ook vaak jagen in de wildernis rondom het kamp. We noemen dat een ‘oerwoudmaaltje’ vangen. De mannen jagen dan op kangoeroes, kalkoenen of goanna's (een soort grote salamander, zie de afbeelding rechts). Als het mogelijk is, jagen ze met geweren of pistolen. Anders gebruiken ze speren. Dieren die een belangrijke rol spelen in het dagelijkse leven worden ook vaak afgebeeld in de kunstwerken van Aborigines. Op pagina 2 bijvoorbeeld vind je een schilderij van een kangoeroe en hiernaast zie je een tekening van een schildpad. Vroeger maakten de Aborigines tekeningen in zand, op hun lichaam of op rotsen. De kunstwerken waren dus niet in musea te zien. Rond 1970 vestigde een blanke tekenleraar zich in een Aboriginal gemeenschap en hij zag wat ze maakten. Hij begon met het gebruik van verf. Vanaf die tijd worden de tekeningen ook op linnen en papier gemaakt. Er is in Nederland een museum waar je Aboriginal kunst kunt zien: het Aboriginal Art Museum (AAMU) in Utrecht.

Er graast ook nog steeds vee in de omgeving van het kamp. Een gedeelte is nog steeds wild en is nog nooit gebrandmerkt. Daarom worden ze schoonhuiden genoemd. Om de twee weken wordt er een stier gedood en het vlees verdeeld. Dat vangen van de stier noemen we de ‘killer’. Voor de ‘killer’ gaan de mannen vroeg op pad. Ze stappen achterin een vrachtwagen en nemen een geweer, slagersmessen en een bijl mee. Ze nemen al het vlees mee naar het kamp en verdelen het eerlijk. Ze vergeten geen stukje. Het lekkerst vind ik in het vuur geroosterde riblappen. Als er genoeg vlees overblijft, wrijven we dat met grof zout in en hangen het op om te drogen. Dan kunnen we het bewaren om later op te eten.
Billabong is een verzamelnaam voor wetlandgebieden in het bovenste gedeelte van het Noordelijk Territorium. Kenmerken van een billabong zijn dat het in de droge periode (mei-oktober) altijd water bevat en nooit volledig opdroogt en dat het in het regenseizoen (novemberapril) onderdeel uitmaakt van uitgestrekte ondergelopen gebieden, de ‘floodplains’. Billabongs zijn vooral in de droge periode een verzamelplaats voor watervogels, vissen en krokodillen.
In het droge seizoen vangen we vis in de modder van de beekjes en in de billabongs. We vangen dan brasem, zeewolf en grote vissen die barra-mundi’s heten. Eén barramundi is genoeg voor een flinke maaltijd voor de hele familie. We vangen ook schildpadden en krokodillen. Niet die grote zoutwater-krokodillen, maar kleine zoetwaterkrokodilletjes. We vangen ze met gewone vishaken en aas. Schildpaddenvlees smaakt heel zoet. Ik ga ook wel eens met mijn moeder en andere vrouwen salamanders vangen. De watersalamanders moeten we vaak opjagen door het water, maar de landsalamanders kunnen we gemakkelijk uit hun zandholletje graven. We hebben een keer een heel grote salamander gevonden. Hij bleek van mijn tante Cleo te zijn, hoewel iemand anders hem had gedood. Mijn tante heeft hem toen gekookt en mocht het vlees verdelen, omdat zij hem het eerst had gezien. De vrouwen vangen heel wat oerwoudmaaltjes in de billabongs. Ze verzamelen de stengels en zaden van de waterlelies, of ze vangen zoetwatermosselen en rivierkreeft. De kinderen leren allemaal hoe je iets te eten kunt vinden als we met de hele familie het oerwoud ingaan. Aan het eind van het natte seizoen kunnen we allerlei soorten fruit plukken, zoals witte krenten en zwarte pruimen. De groene pruimen kun je al eten voordat het begint te regenen. We rapen de rijpe pruimen die rondom de boom liggen op en gooien daarna stokken in de boom om de rest naar beneden te laten vallen. Wilde honing is een van de lekkerste oerwoudmaaltjes. De bijen die de honing maken, lijken op zwarte vliegjes. Je hoeft ze maar te volgen als ze naar hun boom terugvliegen om de honing te vinden. Gelukkig steken ze niet, zelfs niet als je in de boom snijdt om bij de honing te komen. We vermengen de honing met het gele stuifmeel van de bloemen. 12
We halen nog een heleboel andere nuttige dingen uit het oerwoud. Er groeien bijvoorbeeld ook zeepbessen, waarmee je je handen kunt wassen. En ook de takken voor het maken van een bezem halen we daar vandaan. We gebruiken palmbladeren om er mandjes en tassen van te vlechten en verschillende soorten klei en stenen voor het maken van verf. Enkele oudere mensen maken van planten medicijnen. Daarmee genezen ze bijvoorbeeld hoofdpijn, verkoudheid, snijwonden en andere klachten. Een van de huizen in het kamp wordt als kliniek gebruikt. Mary, de zuster die daar werkt, zorgt voor de medicijnen. We kunnen naar haar toegaan wanneer we maar willen. Als er iemand erg ziek is, kunnen we via de radio om de ‘vliegende’ dokter vragen. Dan brengt de dokter de zieke naar het ziekenhuis. De dokter komt eens in de zes weken per vliegtuig naar Hodgson Down om de zieke mensen thuis te behandelen. De landingsbaan voor het vliegtuig is een kilometer of zes van ons kamp. Iemand moet de dokter dus van het vliegtuig halen en hem er weer naar toe brengen. Het is wel eens gebeurd dat mijn tante Rosie in het natte seizoen heel erg ziek werd. De wegen waren overstroomd en niemand kon de landingsbaan bereiken om de dokter op te halen. Tante Rosie moest toen twee riviertjes overzwemmen en een heel eind door de modder lopen om bij het vliegtuig van de dokter te komen. De dokter heeft haar toen meegenomen naar het ziekenhuis in Katherine. Pas toen ze weer helemaal beter was, mocht ze naar Minyerri teruggaan. Royal Flying Doctors Service (Vliegende Dokters) in Australië. In de uitgestrekte woestijnen en savannes van het binnenland waar mensen ver uit elkaar wonen. worden kleine vliegtuigen als ambulance gebruikt.
In het kamp zijn er veel kinderen om mee te spelen. Ik vind het leuk om te knikkeren of om softbal of basketbal te spelen of ‘blikjes werpen’ te doen. Je moet proberen om met de bal het torentje blikjes om te gooien. En je hebt gewonnen als je het torentje weer opgestapeld hebt voordat iemand anders je met de bal af kan gooien. Na schooltijd gaan we vaak in de billabong zwemmen. Heel soms gaan we naar de billabong van Bella Glen, die ligt wel vijftien kilometer van het kamp. In het begin van het natte seizoen is het altijd erg heet. En na de eerste regen zijn de rivieren en beekjes weer met water gevuld. Dan kunnen we afkoelen onder de watervallen of van de rotsen het water inglijden. In het droge seizoen kunnen we alleen in de billabongs zwemmen. We maken soms ook beeldjes van de klei uit de rivier. We smeren onszelf er ook wel eens mee in, en je kunt er ook heel leuk in glijden. Er zijn genoeg mensen die van reizen houden voor hun werk of om familie te bezoeken. Ik ga ook graag naar Darwin of naar Batchelor, maar het is toch altijd het fijnst naar je eigen streek terug te gaan.” 13
KOLONISATIE EN ONDERDRUKKING Aanvankelijk wonen er honderdduizenden Aborigines in Australië. Tijdens de 19e eeuw, onder Brits bestuur, raken ze steeds meer woongebieden kwijt. Daardoor worden hun cultuur en zelfs hun voortbestaan bedreigd. Veel Aborigines sterven aan ziekten die de Europeanen meebrengen of door veel alcohol te drinken. Hun aantal loopt sterk terug. Voordat de Europeanen komen Vermoedelijk trekken de eerste mensen uit Zuidoost-Azië zo’n 40.000 jaar geleden naar Australië. Dat zijn de eerste Aborigines. In de loop van de tijd maken steeds meer mensen de oversteek. Dat is mogelijk omdat de laatste IJstijd nog niet afgelopen is en de zeespiegel aanzienlijk lager is dan nu. Nieuw-Guinea, Tasmanië en sommige eilanden van het huidige Indonesië zitten nog vast aan het Australische vasteland. Tussen deze landmassa en Zuidoost-Azië liggen stukken zee. Maar die zijn zó ondiep dat je die met primitieve vaartuigen kunt oversteken. De Aborigines verspreidden zich daarna langzaam van het tropische noorden van Australië naar de woestijngebieden, het subtropische westen en verder naar het zuiden, tot in Tasmanië. Ze gaan leven in stammen met tussen de 100 en 1500 leden. Die zijn weer verdeeld in ‘bands’ of ‘clans’. Elke stam heeft haar eigen gebied en naast gemeenschappelijke woorden een eigen dialect. Ongeveer 10.000 jaar geleden loopt de IJstijd ten einde en stijgt de zeespiegel. Australië krijgt zijn huidige vorm. Daardoor raken de Aborigines afgezonderd van de rest van de wereld. Alleen in Noord-Australië komen Aborigines in aanraking met zeelieden uit Indonesië die de kust aandoen. Voor de komst van de blanken zijn er tussen de 375.000 en 750.000 Aborigines, verdeeld over 500 à 600 stammen. De meeste stammen leven in de gebieden, waar van oudsher voedsel en water zijn, met name in Arnhemland, de Noordoostkust, de West- en Zuidwestkust en in een gebied waar nu de stad Alice Springs ligt. Zoals de naam van die stad aangeeft, zijn daar bronnen (springs). Landbouw kennen de Aborigines niet. Ze hebben dat ook nooit gewild, want daartoe zouden ze akkers moeten aanleggen en vee op land moeten laten grazen. Dat zijn ingrepen in de natuur die de vooroudergeesten nooit goed zouden keuren. In plaats daarvan zoeken ze voor hun levensonderhoud alles wat de natuur te bieden heeft. Er wonen tegenwoordig 460.000 Aborigines in Australië in ongeveer 300 Aboriginal gemeenschappen. Elke groep heeft een eigen identiteit. Er bestaan zo’n 500 dialecten. Een van de hoofdtalen is het Pama-Nyungang. De officiële taal is Engels.

De verkenning van Australië In de 16e en de 17e eeuw zoeken zeevaarders uit Spanje, Portugal en Nederland naar een onbekend werelddeel op het zuidelijk halfrond. Ze noemen dat werelddeel Terra Australis Incognita. Dat betekent Onbekend Zuidland. Men hoopt daar goud en zilver te vinden. In 1605 stuurt de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie of VOC Willem Janszoon naar Nieuw-Guinea. Van daaruit moet hij het Zuidland zoeken. Hij moet nagaan of daar specerijen en andere kostbaarheden te vinden zijn. Janszoon vindt inderdaad een onbekend land. Hij komt in 1606 aan land bij Kaap York. Hij denkt het Zuidland te hebben gevonden. We weten nu dat dit een deel van Australië is. Daar komt hij in contact met Aborigines. In zijn logboek schrijft hij: “Er is nergens goud te vinden. Er zijn alleen woeste kusten, kale grond en bijzonder wilde inboorlingen.” Dus meent hij daar niets te zoeken te hebben en vertrekt hij weer. Op deze afbeelding zie je een ‘replica’ (= een nagebouwd schip) van het Duyfken, het schip van Willem Janszoon. Het Duyfken is het eerste schip waarvan we weten dat het Australië bereikte. Haar bemanning bracht 320 kilometer kustlijn in kaart. Het is maar een klein scheepje: net twintig meter lang en zes meter breed! In 2006 voer het van Nederland naar Australië om het eerste contact -dan vierhonderd jaar geleden- tussen Europa en Australië te herdenken.
Daarna stuurt de VOC meer zeelieden naar Australië. Vooral Anthony van Diemen, Gouverneur-Generaal van de VOC van 1636 tot 1645, maakt daar werk van. Op zijn bevel maakt Abel Tasman voor de VOC tussen 1642 en 1644 twee reizen om Australië in kaart te brengen. Ook moet Tasman nagaan of je van Australië en Nieuw-Guinea naar Zuid-Amerika kunt varen. Dat blijkt inderdaad te kunnen. Ook ontdekt hij een stuk land dat hij Van Diemenland noemt. Daar blijkt niemand te wonen. Van Diemanland en kustgebieden van Australië die hij ziet, blijken niets te bieden te hebben aan specerijen en andere kostbaarheden. Later blijkt Van Diemenland deel uit te maken van Tasmanië, een eiland zuidelijk van Australië. In 1645 sterft Van Diemen. Daarna stuurt de VOC geen expedities meer naar Australië. Britse kolonie In 1688 komt het eerste Britse schip, de Cygnus, in het westen van Australië aan. De bemanning gaat van boord en komt in contact met Aborigines. Kapitein Dampier van de Cygnus maakt beschrijvingen van deze Aborigines en hun woongebied. In 1697 verschijnen deze aantekeningen in boekvorm in Engeland. Daarna doen enkele Franse zeevaarders Australië aan. Dan hervat Engeland de verkenning van Australië. James Cook ontdekt de oostkust Australië en brengt die in kaart. In 1770 komt hij in Botany Bay aan en gaat daar op verkenning uit. Hij eist het gebied rond Botany Bay voor Engeland op en noemt het New South Wales. Dan heeft de Britse regering nog weinig interesse voor Australië. Ze heeft de handen vol aan de dertien kolonies die Engeland in Noord-Amerika heeft. Die zijn in opstand tegen hun Britse bestuurders. In 1776 roepen ze de onafhankelijke republiek Verenigde Staten van Amerika uit. Dan volgen vier jaar van oorlog tussen dit nieuwe land en Engeland. In 1780 wint het nieuwe land de oorlog. 15
Tot dan toe stuurt Engeland strafgevangenen naar de kolonies in Noord-Amerika. Dat kan vanaf 1780 niet meer. Dus richt de Britse regering in New South Wales een nieuwe strafkolonie op, Port Jackson. Ruim tweehonderd jaar later is de kolonie uitgegroeid tot een wereldstad met ruim vier miljoen inwoners en heet Sydney. Het gebouw met de puntige daken is het wereldberoemde Operahouse.
In 1788 komen de eerste strafgevangen in Port Jackson aan. Ze moeten meteen hard aan het werk. Ze bouwen hun huizen. Ze doen aan akkerbouw en veeteelt om zich van voedsel te voorzien. Daarbij keuren opzichters hun werk. Vanaf 1867 stuurt Engeland geen gevangenen meer naar Port Jackson. De eerste gevangenen die uit de strafkolonie ontslagen worden, blijven in Australië. Er is weinig gelegenheid om terug te keren naar Engeland. De ex-gevangenen hebben geen geld en de boten varen niet regelmatig heen en weer. Velen trekken het binnenland van Australië in om daar een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Vaak doen zij daar hetzelfde werk dat ze in de strafkolonie gedaan hebben en worden veefokkers. Naast gevangenen komen er ook kolonisten naar Australië. Ex-gevangenen en kolonisten mogen zich vestigen waar ze maar willen. Ook mogen ze zoveel land in bezit nemen als ze nodig denken te hebben, met alle hulpbronnen die het biedt. Dat kunnen ze doen want de Britse bestuurders van Australië hebben het grondgebied van het land terra nullius genoemd. Die naam betekent zoveel als: dat land is van niemand want daar hebben géén mensen gewoond totdat de eerste Britten zich daar vestigden. Kolonisten beschouwen Aborigines niet als mensen. Eerst is er voldoende land voor iedereen. Van de Aborigines hebben ex-gevangenen en kolonisten nog weinig of geen last. Dit verandert na 1822. Dan wordt in Engeland de wolwet uitgevaardigd. Deze wet bepaalt dat er in Engeland zelf meer wol geproduceerd moet worden om minder afhankelijk te zijn van invoer van wol uit Duitsland. Maar Engeland heeft te weinig land om zoveel schapen te laten grazen, Australië des temeer. Duizenden Britten verhuizen naar Australië om daar een schapenfokkerij te beginnen. Daar kunnen ze zoveel land gebruiken als ze maar willen. Rond 1851 wordt er goud gevonden in Australië. Dan trekken vele avonturiers naar dit land. Ze verwachten rijk te worden, maar veel goud blijkt er niet te vinden te zijn. Ook kost het veel tijd om het op te graven. Veel van deze goudzoekers blijven in Australië. Australië krijgt steeds meer inwoners en die nemen met elkaar steeds meer land in bezit. Op zoek naar goud rond 1860

Aborigines verdreven van hun land Waar dit toe leidt, blijkt al in 1835. Dan kopen de Engelsen van de Aborigines 240.000 hectare land. Daarvoor betalen ze 40 dekens, 130 messen, 62 scharen, 42 bijlen en 250 zakdoeken. Omdat de Aborigines zelf nooit land kopen of verkopen, nemen ze aan dat ze gewoon op hun land kunnen blijven wonen. Maar de Britten verdrijven hen van hun land en zetten hun gebied met prikkeldraad af. Zoiets hadden deze Aborigines nog nooit meegemaakt. Zo raken de Aborigines hun land kwijt. Niet alleen blijft er steeds minder van over, ook mogen ze alleen de minst vruchtbare stukken houden. Naarmate ze meer land kwijtraken, kunnen ze minder in hun levensonderhoud voorzien want ze leven van wat ze aan voedsel en water kunnen vinden op het land (zie ook pag. 4 en 5). De Aborigines komen in verzet tegen deze gang van zaken. Ze vernielen bezittingen van de kolonisten en jagen op hun vee. Kolonisten treden hiertegen op door Aborigines gewoon dood te schieten. Zo raken kolonisten en Aborigines verwikkeld in een burgeroorlog waarbij de regering de kolonisten steunt. Tussen 1842 en 1859 zet de regering speciale troepen tegen Aborigines in. Eerst lukt het de regering niet de opstand te onderdrukken. Aborigines kennen hun woongebied beter dan hun tegenstanders en weten daar gebruik van te maken. Ook zijn ze behendiger en sneller met hun speren dan hun tegenstanders met hun geweren. Het kost veel tijd om die geweren te herladen als ermee geschoten is. Aan het einde van de 19e eeuw krijgen regeringstroepen geweren die sneller herladen kunnen worden. Dan slaagt de regering er wél in de opstand de kop in te drukken. Om verdere opstanden te voorkomen, richt de regering reservaten op waarin de Aborigines moeten leven. Daar is de grond meestal onvruchtbaar. De Aborigines in reservaten wonen ver van hun droomplaatsen af, zodat ze daar geen rituelen meer kunnen houden voor de vooroudergeesten. Ze kunnen niet meer jagen en voedsel verzamelen. Ze hebben daar geen tijd voor. Ze passen zich aan de manier van leven van de kolonisten aan en leren de gebruiken van hun eigen volk niet meer. Een reservaat staat onder leiding van een blanke. Hij bepaalt wie in een reservaat toegelaten wordt. Hij beheert de bezittingen en het loon van de Aborigines. Hij stelt regels vast. Bewoners mogen bijvoorbeeld geen alcohol drinken, wapens bezitten of kaartspelen. Wie zich niet aan de regels houdt, wordt zwaar gestraft. Niet alle Aborigines komen in reservaten terecht. Sommigen krijgen werk bij een kolonist. Anderen gaan bij een missiepost wonen. Naarmate de kolonisten steeds meer vee krijgen op hun veebedrijven, hebben ze meer personeel nodig. Hun voorkeur gaat uit naar Aborigines, want die vragen minder loon dan blanke Australiërs. Aborigines krijgen hun loon niet in geld, maar in voedsel uitbetaald (Dit blijft tot aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog voor 50% van de Aborigines gelden!). De mannen moeten de kuddes bijeen houden en ermee rondtrekken.

Tijdens de oorlog is er vlees nodig voor de soldaten. De Aborigines worden ingezet als ‘stockmen’. Ze moeten de veekuddes in de gaten houden en naar de slachtplekken drijven.
Net als de Aborigines in reservaten kunnen Aborigines die op veebedrijven werken niet meer op hun oude manier leven. Zo leren ze niet meer hoe ze dat moeten doen. Het voedsel dat ze uitbetaald krijgen, bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit meel, thee en vlees, niet uit groenten of vruchten. Daardoor worden veel Aborigines ziek. Ze krijgen ziekten als de pokken die door kolonisten zijn meegebracht. Die hebben ze niet eerder gekend. Daardoor heeft hun lichaam daar geen afweerstoffen tegen. Ook komen Aborigines voor het eerst in aanraking met alcoholhoudende dranken. Sommigen raken aan de drank, worden daar ziek van en sterven tenslotte. Door ziekten en alcoholgebruik loopt het aantal Aborigines terug tot 30.000 aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. Zendelingen en missionarissen
Naast kolonisten komen er vooral in de 19e eeuw ook zendelingen (= protestants) en missionarissen (= katholiek) naar Australië. Ze willen de Aborigines tot het christendom bekeren. Omdat de meeste Aborigines niet uit zichzelf naar missieposten komen, proberen zendelingen en missionarissen ze naar hun missiepost te lokken. Ze delen regelmatig voedsel aan Aborigines uit. Die hoeven daardoor niet zelf voedsel te verzamelen, maar worden voor hun voedsel wel afhankelijk van de missiepost. In ruil voor voedsel willen de zendelingen en missionarissen vooral de kinderen van de Aborigines bekeren. Deze kinderen zijn vaak de hele dag op de missiepost. Daar krijgen ze onderwijs en leren de godsdienst van de zendelingen en missionarissen kennen. Makkelijk gaat dat niet. De zendelingen en missionarissen spreken een andere taal dan de Aboriginal kinderen. Daardoor hebben ze moeite om te begrijpen wat hun onderwijzers zeggen. Ook is de godsdienst van de onderwijzers anders Aborigines op een missiepost in 1924 dan hun eigen religie. Niet alle zendelingen en missionarissen gaan echter zo te werk. In de jaren ’30 van de 20e eeuw wordt een missiepost gesticht waar Aboriginal kinderen niet de hele dag doorbrengen. Ze worden juist aangemoedigd om aan het dagelijks leven van andere Aborigines mee te doen. Ook krijgen ze niet alleen les in het Engels, maar ook in de taal van hun eigen stam. Daardoor raken de kinderen vertrouwd met de cultuur van hun ouders en blijft die in stand. 18
De Gestolen Generatie Aan het einde van de 19e eeuw begint men kinderen uit huis te plaatsen van wie een ouder een blanke is en de andere een Aborigine. Dat gebeurt onder andere in de Australische deelstaat Western Australia. Daar wordt in 1886 de Aboriginal Beschermingsraad opgericht. Die raad moet de Aborigines in de deelstaat beschermen. Die bescherming bestaat vooral uit het geven van onderwijs en gezondheidszorg zoals de regering dat wil, dus volgens Engelse opvattingen. Aborigines mogen hun kinderen thuis grootbrengen, maar de raad moedigt ze aan ze af te staan. Dat geldt vooral voor kinderen van Aboriginal moeders die door blanke mannen zijn verwerkt. Mannen die dat gedaan hebben, laten vaak moeder en kind in de steek. Dan moet de moeder het kind alléén zien op te voeden. Vooral moeders die arm zijn of meer kinderen van blanke vaders hebben, kunnen dat moeilijk opbrengen. In 1905 voert de regering van Western Australia een wet in die zegt dat de Aboriginal Beschermingsraad voortaan álle kinderen van gemengd Aboriginal afkomst onder de 16 uit huis mag plaatsen. De regering komt met die wet, omdat ze vindt dat hun ouders hen niet goed kunnen opvoeden. Hun ouders zouden er niet voor kunnen zorgen dat ze in de blanke maatschappij mee kunnen draaien. Men vindt dat de Aborigines een minderwaardig ras zijn en dat hun manier van leven ongezond is, vooral voor kinderen. De uit huis geplaatste kinderen komen in een tehuis. Ook elders in Australië en op de eilanden in de Torresstraat (een zeestraat tussen Nieuw-Guinea en Australië) worden kinderen van gemengd Aboriginal afkomst uit huis geplaatst. Dat gebeurt meestal tegen de wil van de ouders. Ze worden in een tehuis of bij blanke pleegouders ondergebracht. Tehuizen worden door de overheid of door een kloosterorde of andere organisatie opgezet. In tehuizen zijn lijfstraffen als stokslagen gewoon. Het eten dat de kinderen daar krijgen is soms slecht. Ze hebben soms onvoldoende kleding. En ze mogen hun familie nooit meer zien. Ook kinderen in pleeggezinnen hebben het soms niet makkelijk. Ze worden als huisknechten aan het werk gezet of als goedkope arbeidskrachten in een werkplaats. Ook komt het voor dat één of meer andere kinderen of volwassenen uit het pleeggezin ontucht met ze plegen. Alle uit huis geplaatste kinderen leren te leven als blanken, niet zoals hun ouders en andere Aborigines. Van de Aboriginal cultuur leren ze niets en ze kunnen daar niets van overdragen aan hún kinderen. Dat wil de overheid ook. Zo hoopt die ertoe bij te dragen dat de Aboriginal cultuur verdwijnt. In 1975 stopt de overheid helemaal met het gedwongen uit huis plaatsen van kinderen wier vader of moeder een Aborigine is. Tussen 1910 en 1975 zijn op die manier ten minste 100.000 kinderen bij hun ouders weggehaald. Men noemt deze kinderen tegenwoordig de Gestolen Generatie. Meriki is zo’n kind uit die Gestolen Generatie. Ze werd geboren in de provincie Kamilaroi in het dorp Gunnedah. Toen ze drie was, werd ze bij haar familie weggehaald. Ze kwam bij een blanke familie te wonen, ver weg in een van de buitenwijken van Sydney. Merika heeft altijd veel verdriet gehad van de scheiding met haar ouders. Toen ze ouder werd, is ze op zoek gegaan naar haar ouders en familie. Ze wilde weten waar ze vandaan kwam en wat haar culturele achtergrond (identiteit) was. Meriki houdt veel van muziek en tekenen en het blijkt dat ze daar ook veel van haar gevoelens in kwijt kan. Ze begint met het schrijven en illustreren van kinderliedjes en kinderverhalen. Daarmee bezoekt ze scholen in Sydney. Het wordt haar steeds duidelijker dat de Australische kinderen weinig weten van de cultuur en geschiedenis van de Aborigines. In 1992 kan ze aan het werk als assistent-leerkracht ‘Aboriginal onderwijs’. Ze onderwijst de kinderen met liedjes en dans over de cultuur van Aborigines. De helft van de kinderen op de school is ‘koori’ (zoals de Aborigines zichzelf noemen vaak noemen). Zo leren ze ook over hun eigen cultuur.

PROTEST EN GENOEGDOENING Ook in de 20e eeuw worden de Aborigines en hun cultuur bedreigd, nu ook door mijnbouw. Ze eisen land terug en komen op voor hun rechten. Vooral tegen het einde van de eeuw komt de regering aan hun wensen tegemoet en worden ze meer als volwaardige burgers behandeld. De boerenkolonisten begrijpen niets van de
Aborigines. Geef je ze werk, en dan verdwijVreemdelingen in eigen land Ook in de 20e eeuw voelen Aborigines nen ze opeens. Om na een paar weken opzich vreemdeling in een land dat van hen eens weer voor de deur te staan! Inderdaad was tot de kolonisten kwamen. Ze heb- gaan Aborigines op pad om ceremonieën bij te wonen en leden van zijn/haar clan te ontmoeben het idee dat ze donkere indringers ten. ‘He’s gone walkabout’, zeggen de boeren. zijn waar blanke Australiërs zich voor ‘Hij is aan het rondwandelen’. De boeren denschamen. Dat beeld wordt versterkt, om- ken dat de Aborigines daarom niet om hun dat ze er arm uitzien en omdat ze niet land geven. Maar de walkabouts onderhouden kunnen leven zoals de blanken. Hoewel juist de band met het land. Alleen op een anze er toe worden gedwongen, willen ze dere manier dan de boeren gewend zijn. dat ook niet. Ze voelen zich niet thuis tussen de blanken met hun cultuur, gewoonten en godsdienst. Naar verhouding hebben meer Aborigines dan blanken geen goede woning en een slecht betaalde of helemaal géén baan. Ook worden ze gediscrimineerd. Hun oude manier van leven wordt onmogelijk gemaakt zonder dat ze daar iets tegen kunnen doen. Dat komt vooral omdat ze vinden dat ze land niet kunnen bezitten en omdat Aborigines vaak naar een ander gebied trekken op zoek naar voedsel en water. Daardoor hebben kolonisten de indruk dat Aborigines geen duidelijke band met hun land hebben. Ze wonen en werken niet lang op één plek. Daardoor menen kolonisten dat ze land van Aborigines af kunnen pakken zonder dat die hen dat kunnen beletten. In 1838 verwoordt de Australische krant Sydney Herald deze opvatting aldus: “Hun recht op land is niet meer dan dat van de kangoeroe en de emoe. Wie wil beweren dat dit grote continent door God bedoeld is om een wildernis te blijven? Het Britse volk heeft het in bezit genomen en had daar, onder goddelijk gezag, het recht toe.” Wat Aborigines aan woongebied hebben, is onvruchtbaar, afgelegen en moeilijk toegankelijk. Alleen daar leven ze zoals ze tot de komst van de kolonisten gedaan hebben. Ze hebben weinig contact met mensen van buiten.
Delfstoffen Maar ook daar wordt hun oude manier van leven bedreigd. In de bergen en woestijnen van Noord-, West-, en Centraal Australië worden grote voorraden goud, steenkool en uranium gevonden. Daar komen binnenlandse en buitenlandse mijnbouwbedrijven op af. De Australiërs zien nieuwe mogelijkheden om hun land één van de rijkste ter wereld te maken.

Net als veeboeren in de 19e eeuw verdrijven mijnbouwbedrijven Aborigines uit hun woongebieden, weg van hun droomplaatsen, het voedsel en water dat ze daar verzamelen. Ze zien met lede ogen hoe daar stukken terrein worden afgegraven, putten worden geboord en mijnschachten worden gegraven. In hun ogen maken mijnbouwbedrijven hun land kapot, terwijl ze dat van hun vooroudergeesten alleen maar mogen gebruiken. Soms ontstaat er ook vervuiling zoals bij het winnen van uranium. Eerst worden steenlagen met uraniumoxide afgegraven. Daarna wordt het vermalen en haalt men het oxide uit het steenpoeder. Ten slotte wordt het steenpoeder waar de chemische stoffen nog inzitten, weggegooid. Zo ontstaan er gaten in de grond met giftige afvalbergen ernaast. Ook het Britse leger neemt Aboriginal gebieden in bezit. Tussen 1952 en 1962 houdt het leger bovengrondse kernproeven in Australië. Daartoe wordt een enorm gebied ontruimd. Dat raakt door de proeven besmet met stoffen die lange tijd schadelijke radioactieve straling afgeven. Daardoor blijft het lange tijd ongezond om daar te komen. In de jaren ‘50 richt het leger in South Australia een gebied in om wapens te testen. Het heet ‘Verboden Gebied Woomera’, bijna viermaal zo groot als Nederland.
Op dit bord staat ‘Verboden Toegang. Deze weg maakt deel uit van het gebied dat onder toezicht staat van het leger.’
Aborigines krijgen land terug Ondertussen groeit er onder de Aborigines een nieuw bewustzijn. Ze worden weer trots op hun verleden en hun cultuur en voor zover ze die nog hebben, op hun woongebieden. In de jaren ’30 van de 20e eeuw komt er steeds meer verzet van de Aborigines. Zij willen het land terug dat van hen is afgepakt en ze eisen gelijke rechten. Ze krijgen daarbij steun van organisaties die zich inzetten voor de rechten van de Aborigines. Het verzet groeit en werpt ten slotte vruchten af. In 1967 worden de Aborigines bij wet gelijkgesteld aan blanke Australiërs. Daarmee verandert er echter weinig aan hun achtergestelde positie. Veel Aborigines proberen deze ellende te vergeten door veel alcohol te drinken. Of ze trekken de wildernis in om te leven zoals hun voorouders dat deden. Het volgende succes komt in 1977. Dan vaardigt de regering de wet Aboriginal Land Rights Act uit. Die zegt dat Aborigines recht hebben op landbezit. Ook mogen ze 20% van de Northern Territory in bezit krijgen. Maar er staat ook in dat als het belangrijk voor Australië is dat er mijnbouw word uitgeoefend, de Aborigines dat niet kunnen tegenhouden. Dit leidt tot veel ruzies. In 1966 brengt de regering een bankbiljet uit waarop een Aboriginal kunstwerk staat afgebeeld. Er ontstaat een rel. De kunstenaar is namelijk geen toestemming gevraagd. Twee jaar later krijgt de kunstenaar officieel de ‘copyrights’. Het betekent dat ‘de eer en de reputatie van de kunstenaar moet worden gewaarborgd’. De rel geeft wel aan hoe moeilijk het is om ‘gelijke rechten’ op alle gebieden in de praktijk te brengen. 21
De Aborigines willen niet dat hun droomplaatsen in het gebied verstoord worden. De mijnbouwbedrijven houden daar meestal geen rekening mee en verstoren de droomplaatsen tóch. Bovendien bepaalt iedere deelstaat zelf hoe het bezit van land door Aborigines en mijnbouwbedrijven geregeld wordt. Dat blijkt als het een mijnbouwbedrijf niet lukt een gebied van Aborigines over te nemen. Dan past de regering van de deelstaat waar het gebied in ligt de wetgeving zó aan dat de Aborigines het gebied alsnog moeten afgeven aan het mijnbouwbedrijf. In 1977 worden de eerste Landraden van Aborigines opgericht. Drie jaar later wordt de Nationale Federatie van Landraden (van Aborigines) opgericht. In 1982 spannen de stamoudste Eddie Mabo en vijf andere bewoners van het eiland Murray bij Queensland een rechtszaak aan over landrechten tegen de regering van Queensland. Tien jaar later doet de Hoge Raad hierover uitspraak. Ze verklaart dat het grondgebied van Australië niet terra nullius (onbewoond) was en dat de Aborigines de eerste bewoners van het land zijn. Dat maakt het mogelijk dat Aborigines hun land voor een deel terugkrijgen. Volgens de uitspraak kunnen Aborigines hun land terugkrijgen, omdat ze er eerder op leefden dan de blanke Australiërs. Als ze kunnen bewijzen dat ze een band met het land hebben en dat het geen eigendom van iemand is, wordt dat land eigendom van de hele stam. Slechts 15% van de Australische bodem heeft een eigenaar, de rest niet. Al het land van de overheid, ongeveer 10% van Australië, kan teruggevraagd worden. Wel staat in de uitspraak dat Aborigines mijnondernemingen op hun land moeten toelaten als die ondernemingen daar delfstoffen willen winnen.

Niet iedereen is blij met de uitspraak. Regeringen van de deelstaten en mijnbouwbedrijven zijn bang dat meer dan de helft van het land zal worden opgeëist. Ze zijn bang dat de Aborigines de baas worden van de winning van delfstoffen. Een regeringsfunctionaris voorspelt dat de uitspraak een storm van rechtszaken op gang zal brengen. Die zullen de rechtbanken tien jaar lang bezighouden en enorm veel geld kosten. Ook zullen mijnbouwbedrijven daardoor het geld dat ze in het winnen van delfstoffen steken kwijtraken. Op de lange termijn zal niemand baat hebben bij al die rechtszaken. Wat die rechtszaken betreft krijgt de functionaris ten dele gelijk. Direct na de uitspraak biedt de regering van South Australia de Aborigines uit die staat aan om hun land in het oude koloniale centrum van de stad Adelaide terug te geven. Hiermee wil ze voorkomen dat Aborigines rechtszaken aanspannen om duurdere stukken grond in de stad op te eisen. In andere delen van Australië spannen Aborigines rechtszaken aan om te proberen land terug te krijgen. Soms lukt ze dat ook. In de periode 1960-1970 verhevigt het de strijd voor landrechten. Tijdens de demonstraties dragen de mensen eigengemaakt spandoeken. Dit brengt Harold Thomas, een Aboriginal kunstenaar, op het idee van een eigen vlag. De vlag moet dienen als een symbool voor de Aboriginal identiteit en strijd voor gelijkheid. Het zwart staat voor de Aborigines, het rood voor de rode aarde van het land en het geel voor de zon. Het kan ook zijn dat het rood staat voor het bloed van de Aborigines die omgekomen zijn tijdens het regime van de kolonisten. In 1971, op de Nationale Dag van de Aborigines, wordt de vlag voor het eerst gehesen. In 1995 wordt de vlag officieel erkend als een ‘Vlag van Australië’.

Kyle vander Kuyp en Cathy Freeman Ook in andere opzichten gaat het beter met de Aborigines. Hun aantal loopt op van 30.000 eind 19e eeuw tot bijna 459.000 in 2006. Hierbij zijn wel mensen van gemengde afkomst meegeteld . Ook zetten Australiërs van (gemengd) Aboriginal afkomst de oorspronkelijke bewoners van hun land op positieve wijze op de kaart. In september 2000 vinden de Olympische Zomerspelen van Sydney plaats. Hier doen twee Aboriginal atleten aan mee, Kyle vander Kuyp op de 110 meter horden en Cathy Freeman op de 400 meter. Ze zijn niet alleen binnen en buiten Australië beroemd door hun prestaties. Hordenloper Vander Kuyp (geboren in 1971) groeit op in een pleeggezin. Zijn pleegvader is een Nederlander, vandaar zijn achternaam. Hij hoopt tijdens de Olympische Spelen een medaille te winnen, liefst een gouden. Dan zou hij een held worden van jonge Aborigines. Hij komt niet in de buurt van het podium. Wel heeft hij naar zijn zeggen een prijs gewonnen die nog belangrijker is dan zelfs een gouden Olympische medaille. Hij is er na lang zoeken in geslaagd zijn echte ouders terug te vinden. Zij echte vader is een Ier, zijn moeder een Aborigine. Kort na zijn geboorte werd hij door de Nederlander Bernard vander Kuyp en diens Australische vrouw geadopteerd. Hij is dus een lid van de Gestolen Generatie. Honderden van zijn lotgenoten proberen schadevergoeding te krijgen van de regering voor alle ellende die ze na hun uithuisplaatsing hebben meegemaakt. Daartoe spannen ze processen aan. Vander Kuyp doet dat niet. Wel geeft hij lezingen op sportscholen en jeugdclubs waar ook Aborigines komen om op te komen voor de rechten van de Aborigines. Freeman (geboren in 1973) raakt in 1994 in opspraak als ze na een overwinning een ereronde maakt met de Australische vlag én de vlag van de Aborigines. Sportcommentatoren denken dat ze dat doet uit protest tegen de onderdrukking van Aborigines. Veel Australische sportliefhebbers denken dat ook en staan daar ook achter. Zelf zegt ze hierover: “Ik wil de mensen alleen maar laten zien dat je als inheems individu hetzelfde kunt bereiken als ieder ander. Ik wil geen politica of iets dergelijks zijn. Kinderen zijn voor mij het belangrijkst. Als ze iemand zien zoals ik die sterk en trots is, helpt het misschien om naar buiten te treden en te zeggen ‘dat wil ik ook’. Ik wil iemand zijn, een dokter, een advocaat, een atleet of wat dan ook. Er zijn nog te weinig mensen die zo denken bij de Aborigines.” Daar draagt ze zelf toe bij. Tijdens de Olympische Zomerspelen van 1996 in Atlanta wint ze een zilveren medaille op de 400 meter. Tijdens de Spelen van 2000 in Sydney wint ze op die afstand een gouden medaille. Ook steekt ze bij de opening van deze Spelen de Olympische vlam aan. Cathy heeft op haar rechterschouder ‘Cos I’m free’ / ‘omdat ik vrij ben’ laten tatoeëren. Het is de titel van een lied van Andy White, gezongen door een Aboriginal zangeres, Christine Anu.

Genoegdoening Aborigines vragen de regering om hen haar excuses aan te bieden en schadevergoeding te geven voor hun slechte behandeling door de overheid. Ze willen dat ze rechtvaardiger worden behandeld. In 1993 opent premier Paul Keating (premier van 1991 tot 1996) het Internationale Jaar van de Inheemse Volkeren. Dan zegt hij: “Wij waren het die onteigenden: wij pikten het traditionele land in en wij verwoestten de traditionele levensstijl, wij brachten de ziekten en de alcohol, wij pleegden de moorden.” De regering laat het niet bij woorden. Ze geeft gebieden terug aan Aborigines zoals Ayers Rock. Dat is een grote rots bij Alice Springs die voor Aborigines een heilige plaats is. Ze geeft Aborigines uitkeringen en laat ze opleidingen volgen. Ze spant zich in om de cultuur van de Aborigines in stand te houden binnen de moderne westerse samenleving. Kinderen kunnen op school hun eigen taal als eerste taal leren. Aborigines van de Gestolen Generatie vragen de regering van het land en die van de deelstaten om excuses en schadevergoeding voor alle ellende die ze hebben meegemaakt. De regering van Keating komt ze tegemoet. In 1995 stelt ze een commissie in. Die zoekt uit waarom er kinderen van gemengd Aboriginal afkomst bij hun ouders zijn weggehaald, waar ze onder zijn gebracht en hoeveel het er zijn. Op 26 mei 1997 brengt de commissie hier verslag van uit in het Bringing Them Home Report. Hierin staat onder meer dat er in Australië jaarlijks een Sorry Day moet worden gehouden. Dat is een herdenkingsdag voor de Gestolen Generatie. Australiërs zouden die dag kunnen aangrijpen om te zeggen dat ze het betreuren dat er kinderen van gemengd Aboriginal afkomst uit huis zijn geplaatst. Hiertoe worden in steden en dorpen overal in het land bijeenkomsten gehouden waar blanken en Aborigines naartoe gaan. De Sorry Day is op 26 mei. In 1996, de commissie is nog aan het werk, volgt John Howard Keating op als premier. Die vindt dat Australiërs van zijn generatie geen schuld en blaam op zich hoeven nemen voor wat er in het verleden is gedaan. Dus wil hij niet namens de landsregering de Gestolen Generatie zijn excuus aanbieden. Wel trekt hij geld uit om mensen van de Gestolen Generatie te helpen. Deelstaatregeringen en kerken bieden mensen van de Gestolen Generatie wél hun excuses aan. In 1999 betuigt de landsregering ‘diepe en oprechte spijt’ voor het weghalen van kinderen van gemengd Aboriginal afkomst bij hun ouders. Howard noemt dit het meest beschamende hoofdstuk uit de geschiedenis van Australië. Van echte excuses is echter geen sprake. Ook daarna heeft Howard’s regering niet haar excuses aangeboden aan de Aborigines van de Gestolen Generatie. Een initiatief om verzoening te brengen tussen de Aborigines en andere Australiërs is het planten van een ‘zee van handen’ (Sea of Hands). De bedoeling is dat er in heel Australië vier miljoen handen worden geplant. Dat is één hand voor één op de vier inwoners van Australië. Tot nu toe (oktober 2007) hebben 2,5 miljoen Australiërs een hand geplant. ‘Sorry’ zeggen is het begin van de genezing. ‘Sorry’ zeggen betekent dat je bereid bent over de misstand na te denken. Over wat er verkeerd is gegaan. En hoe je er aan kan meewerken om het weer goed te maken’. ANTaR: Australiërs voor Rechten voor Inheemsen en Verzoening.
