I neither: Jm interested to encourage Analyses of Art, but through the Pleasure of Looking, thaf s all ..."
Als handelaar of kunstenaar is men sociaal geslaagd als men vol• doende verkoopt.
VIIajVIIb (242/374 Brussels Hilton Hotel).

waarneming tijdens inspannende sportprestaties.

Kurt Ryslavy
Kurt Ryslavy was born in 1961 in Judendorf, Austria. From 1979 to 1984 he studied plulosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1983 he followed studies in typography at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. After his studies he chose an artistic career. In 1987 he immigrated to Brussels where he built up a body of paintings and published several artist's books. Unfortunately Ryslavy could· not make a living out of his artistic production. In 1990 he decided to start with the import and trade of Austrian wine in order to make money. The year before he published the artist's book: Des Fonnes de CompLexitées moyennes attirent notre Attention and the multiple I neither: 'Tm interested to encourage AnaLyses of Art, but through the Pleasure of Looking, that's aLL...": nor "Les bons moments qui restent". At a first reading the titles lead us to suspect that Ryslavy is in favour of an uncomplicated enjoyment of art. These titles are, however, found one-liners linked with his perception of the real situation in which the book and the multiple are published. Associations that teIl us about Ryslavy's perception of the personal situ ation, the historical and current artistic trends (1). Ryslavy states that one can recall these personal considerations when all ambition has been given up. In 1992 Kurt Ryslavy showed graphic works of 1989 and a selection of paintings at the Richard Foncke gallery in Ghent (2). Ryslavy who found these works too beautifuL for sale called them: Dekorationsobjekte - nicht für den Verkauf bestimmt. They are characterized by the attention for the pictorial material and a subtle colouring obtained by the application of successive layers of paint. After some observation one notes capricious structures in which colour fields are outlined. These surfaces are metaphors for the concept of emptiness, endLessness, spaciality. In function of this metaphysical concept Ryslavy studied many representations of related subjects and noted that this immensity was formally translated in a coloured surface. In order to indicate this concept Ryslavy introduces the paradox of the 64
definition, the outLining, the demarcation, thus concretely realizing the concept. Kurt Ryslavy noted in conversations that the public often misinterpreted rus intentions. In order to avoid this he puts fragmentary texts on/in the colour fields by transparant "instructions stamps" . The texts have literally and figuratively an introductory function and are also somewhat ironic; as aresult they are the source of some entertainment for the public. At the exhibition entrance Ryslavy set up two video screens on which we see two actors. One overhears scraps of conversations about art from the exhibition space. Is he suggesting that we should not take the painted works too seriously and that we should only look and enjoy carelessly? His ironic intention is indeed already present in the attribution of the titles to the works. The catalogue for the exhibition also shows two advertisements for Leth wine and the Lobmeyer sets of glasses that are for sale at Ryslavy's. Referring to the wine growing business, Ryslavy exhibited in a beautiful, imposing showcase from the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art, three sets of glasses made by the Viennese company J.&.L. Lobmeyr. These sets of glasses were created by the artists Josef Hoffmann, Ludwig Lobmeyr and Adolf Loos. On the wall there were original and signed price lists of the glass manufacturer Lobmeyr. It was abundantly clear that this exhibition was intended to illustrate the combination of Kurt Ryslavy'sinterests : the creative artist with a pictorial body of works and the enterprising businessman with a trade of (Austrian) wines. Ryslavy assumes that there is a certain analogy between the success of the commercial entrepreneur and that of the creative artist in a society which applies contrived marketing strategies to all commercial transactions. Ta achieve a commercial success one needs a well-known, established name, an immediately recognizable tag or label and an acceptable and convincing sales pitch. These requirements are likewise valid for the wine trade and the art production. Kurt Ryslavy
notes that an individual reacts to art and/ or to wine according to his own frame of reference. This frame is also defined and formed by the individual's cultural and social background and relativizes, according to Ryslavy, the myths that arise in relation to the big names. Businessmen are potential buyers of art and the art-Ioving public certainly enjoys a good glass of wine at openings. Both the wine importer and the artist, as weIl as their respective products are provided with biographic descriptions and reflections in a characteristic jargon. One is a socially successful salesman or artist if one sells enough. Stating that tasting in general means to perceite - whatsoever - Ryslavy decides to introduce the tasting of wine in museums. That way he directly combines the commercial reality with the reality of the art world. He sends invitations and spreads brochures and leaflets according to the customary rules towards a more diverse public within differently shaped invitations. In 1993 he organized a first wine-tasting in gallery Knoll in Vienna, under the title Avantgarde verpflichtet (deduced form noblesse ob/ige). During the presentations Kurt Ryslavy is the salesman who has no problems with respecting all the rules of the trade, in a world where he can also be an artist and present his paintings. The tasting of wine is as it were a ritual in which the handled objects are used with the necessary respect and caution. This approach is even emphasized by providing the invitation for the event at the Forum Stadtpark, Graz on 28 September 1996 with the title Objets Ritue/s. At his recent exhibition Expatriate, in Brussels at the European Parliament from 23 September to 4 October 1996, he showed aselection of recent paintings. These were variations on a very classicaI theme, i.e. the landscape with mountain in the background. This series was painted after the memory and sketches of a reallandscape. The first was already painted in 1983. In some paintings there is almost no trace left of the drawing of the landscape because of the growing dusky after a hard days
work in wine business, as says Ryslavy. In 1994 he showed these works at the owner's of Weingut Nittnaus in Gols and titled them Ryslavy 1986, ein grosser Jahrgang. By calling himself a good mi/lésime he again ridicules the principle of the important, well-known names and creates expectations among the consumers of wine and art; it is indeed true that wine reaches its fascinating greatness after a maturing process of - sometimes - decades. Analogous with the wine harvest, after the exhibition the paintings are spread as memories of, or fragments of a pleasant world, filled up with conflicts in distance. On more recent paintings with the theme of the landscape he has grafted reaI invoices, the details of which are rendered true to nature. These documents are naturalistic references to his daily strugg/e as a salesman of a product that is less renowned than the wine of his French colleagues, and this in an environment where, thanks to marketing techniques, the consumer mostly buys known labels. In 1996 Kurt Ryslavy copied his invoices enlarged on white paper. He likes to paint these documents as they give him the opportunity to make a living. These works are contained in a casing of shining plexiglass; if desired, it is possible to take the paintings out of their protective enve/opes. This presentation influences the aesthetic judgement and rather camouflages the document's true identity and intention. The work (consciously) refrains from asking questions about art and/ or the contemplation of art; it always invites others, lovers of wine or personalities from the theatre, to speak at the exhibition/tasting. By doing so he wants to expand the possible communication and perception in the art world. Ryslavy, who is always observing the amateurfconsumer while he is having a good time, imperceptibly anticipates the visitors powers of perception. Thus he created in July-August 1996, for the Lütze Museum in August 1996, a subtIe setting by exhibiting the bronze sculptures from the collection behind the table with wines. At he exhibition Visual Reports Ryslavy shows two paintings made in his leisure time, on Sundays: Facture décorative IX (279 Roya/

Windsor Hotel/Brussels) and Le monochrome avec arrière-plan èconomique VIIa/VIIb (242/374 Brussels HiIton Hote/). On the first painting the invoice is grafted on a reproduction of a winter landscape with skaters by Pieter Brueghel 1. The first work seem to unite the need for a safe country life with the stressing commercial activities of om society which is dominated by the economie crisis. In the farmer Royal bedroom he shows a col1ection of real documents of his wine trade: advertising leaflets, invitations for the tasting of wine, invoices.. It is the most obvious and realistic way to bring a true evocation of the reality of the wine trade and its sodal function. The title of the instal1ation is Interview (in the former) Royal Bedroom, 1996. SO/1
Des formes de Complexitées moyel1l1es attirel1t 110tre attel1tiol1 is a sentenee taken from an analysis of the pereeption during a strenuous sporting event in whieh one aehieves high speeds. Ryslavy transposes this sentenee to the artistie eontext in whieh it immediately aequires meaning. The publieation was originally meant as a eatalogue for the exhibition with the same name at the Isy Braehot Gallery in Brussels, 1989. However, the original budget was deereased so that the title ean also be understood as an answer to the organizer's irreverent attitude to the artist, Ryslavy. In the title of the multiple I l1either: 'Tm il1leresled 10 el1eOllrage Allalyses of Arl, bul Ihrough the Pleasure of Lookil1g, tlml's all...": nor "Les bOl1s moments qui restent" Ryslavy quotes the artist Allen Me. Collum and then repeats a slogan for Stella. Ryslavy uses Me. Collum's eynieally meant statement in earnest. In 1988 the art world was eondueting a serious debate on Jeff Koons works. 1
