The Kekulé cycle places the viability of our planet for a continually growing world population in the spotlight. Controlling the climate change is one of our crucial challenges. New technology can reduce the CO2 footprint considerably. Closely linked hereto is a sustainable food supply. Scientists start looking for a high performance agriculture with a minimal impact on the environment and the ecosystems. In the field of energy supply, we look at the potential of solar heat and fuel cells. What future do geologists predict for fossil resources? Do not-conventional sources as shale gas play any role and how does chemical industry cope with depleting resources?
Technology also plays a major role in the conservation of cultural heritage. The Kekulé cycle therefore pays attention to the contemporary research of works of art and recent restauration techniques. Health themes traditionally round off the programme. We discover new insights in genetics and look at the development of new drugs. With these actual topics the Kekulé cycle wants to create an image of the role science and technology will play in constructing our future. We kindly invite you to reflection and discussion and are looking forward already to inspiring interactions with numerous students and professionals from education, research and industry. We heartily welcome you,
XVI
