Men's Teams Round Robin 2 Jawa Barat v. Jawa Timur By Jos Jacobs For the last match on Saturday, I watched the confrontation between East and West Java. This turn out to be a quiet match for most of the time as there were only four boards that did trouble the scores: two at the start and two near the end of the match. As it was Jatim who scored heavily on all four of these boards, the result of the match was a big win for Jatim : 57–12 or 18.66–1.34 V.P.
In the other room, East did in fact open the bidding, which led to the second–best contract in EW. 2{ was a natural or a balanced GF hand but once West showed some spade support first, East would never again settle for 3NT. Denny Sacul wisely refrained from giving away his prey prematurely with a double, so Jatim collected another +150 and 10 IMPs in peace when 4] went down three.
This was the first board of the match:
On the next board, West Jawa again went astray in the bidding, when it was not their lucky day:

When East did not open, E/W had a normal enough auction to 3NT, As North had shown majors with his 2{, a spade contract for EW was soon out of the question. Over the double, 2{ was a diamond transfer but when North rebid a direct 3NT, South did not know that 4[ might well be a better place to go. Without a trump lead, declarer can ruff two losing spades and shed his diamond loser on a top club to make his contract, losing just three trump tricks in the end. Had East been looking at a diamond honour doubleton, 3NT might also have come home but as this was not to be, the contract went down three on the automatic club lead. Jatim +300.

A much more quite auction in the other room. South did not open and simply showed his majors when 1NT ran to him. North did not have any preference, hence his 2} enquiry, so NS landed in a safe haven. Jatim another +170 and 10 more IMPs to lead 20–0 after two boards.... Jabar scored substantially just once, when they made 1NT playing contract from the right side of the table and thus avoiding an easily killing lead. Ten boards later, the score thus had rised to 24–12 when we once again saw successive big swings:

In the Closed Room, Denny Sacul opened a nebulous diamond and Jabar, too, dully got to 3NT. Hearts were lead, declarer winning his king and playing a spade to the queen and a spade back to his ten and North's jack. North shifted to the {K but declarer won his ace and went after the diamonds, cashing the king and leading his last diamond to dummy's ten, in view of North's opening bid. When South win a surprise }J, the roof fell in. Down four and an unexpected 14 more IMPs to Jatim.

Buletin Hari ke–10_Selasa, 27 September 2016 The auction was rather natural with a few cuebids and RKCB in the end. In a sense, West was right to convert to 6NT as he certainly had some tricks available which might be out of reach on a diamond lead in a spade contract. Partner's 3} looked like suggesting shortness in the suit. At first sight, without a club lead and with the spades 3–2, 6NT looks easy enough as the ]10 would become an entry to the diamonds once you lead the ]J from dummy. However, what would you do when the defenders refuse to win their ]Q? Your only hope would then be that the ]Q is with South, in which case a low spade from dummy towards your ten provides the necessary access to the diamonds. When North led a diamond himself, getting to 12 tricks was no problem anymore....Jatim +990.

2{ showed diamonds and 3[ showed three–card support in Spade. For me, the rest of the auction is unclear, especially the final raise to seven–a contract that only a clairvoyant would have made. One down, another +50 and another 14 IMPs to Jatim. Please note that 7NT rolls home without a problem. Declarer's only possible entry to the diamonds is the ]10 so he has to cash the ]AK hoping for a singleton or doubleton queen.

Men's Teams Round Robin 2, match 7 Sumatera Selatan v. Jawa Tengah By Jos Jacobs At the start of this match, the last of the second round robin, South Sumatera (Sumsel) were just 0.64 V.P. behind East Java (Jatim) in 5 th place. Just ahead of East Java were North Sulawesi. As the latter were playing Aceh and thus favourites to win their match and therefore go through to the semifinals, the clear winner of this Sumsel-Jateng match would also qualify. Sumsel would need a win by at least 3 IMPs to make it and for Jateng, any win would do. All this provided Sulut would win their final match v. Aceh, which they duly did. Sumsel were leading 5-4 when their weak NT exploded into their faces:

Of course, NS were unlucky to find a 4-0 spade break but Sumsel’s +200 added up to the +300 from the other table to reduce their deficit to just 1 IMP. Closed Room but he would have gone down now, had West been able to cash two trumps and then a top club, declarer in that case having no trumps left in his hand. He would also have gone down now, had West simply returned a diamond. When West continued a top club, Kamto could ruff and exit in trumps with the diamond communication still intact, so he was home. Jateng +420. Cashing the ]A first before exiting in diamonds would not have helped West; it only costs a tempo. The solution thus seems to be to play another trump after the king wins the first round. West will have no good return. Any red suit is out of the question so he leads a club which you ruff in hand, followed by a low diamond. After that, you can ruff a further club play in dummy and play on diamonds, using the [A as the last entry back to your diamonds. Dummy’s last trump will take care of your losing heart..
Strong Club, North’s double showing majors.
Please note that the return of the [K in Merrimac style does not work either, as the hearts are 3-3.
How would you play on a top club lead? West is marked with the ]A and at least one red king, probably both. You also have to ruff two clubs in hand as you will certainly lose two trump tricks (assuming trumps are 3-2) and one red king – the }K, presumably. So what about ruffing, playing a spade to the king which wins the trick , followed by the }Q to West’s king? This is the line Kamto followed in the
In the Open Room, Sumsel made heavy weather of the play. Declarer did not ruff the top club lead but threw a heart instead. From this point, he could no longer make the contract as he was bound to lose the }K now as well as two trump tricks. Eventually, he went down three so Jateng scored another +150 and 11 IMPs to catch up Sumsel at the post. The semis would be: Jateng v. DKI Jakarta and Jatim v. Sulut.
