Cultural Notes Indonesians enjoy the simple pleasures of life. For entertainment, they enjoy visiting the mountains and public parks or watching movies and sports on television. They like activities where they do not have to pay an admission fee. A leisurely visit with their relatives on the weekend is often all that is takes to have an enjoyable time. Soccer is a very popular sport in Indonesia, like football is in the United States. Most Indonesians like to watch soccer matches on television, and if it is possible, they will attend the event. The sport is so popular that parents and siblings will teach toddlers how to play soccer. The fact that soccer is an inexpensive sport to be involved in adds to its popularity. The game does not require an expensive outfit or fancy equipment. Soccer games are the most watched entertainment in Indonesia. There are other sports that are popular in Indonesia. Second to soccer is boxing. Muhammad Ali is well known in Indonesia. The fact that he is a Moslem, like the vast majority of Indonesians, increases the admiration people have for him. Motor sports are another popular sport in Indonesia. This is surprising, considering the majority of Indonesians do not own cars. Only about one in four people own cars in Indonesia, and the majority of them live in the big cities of Jakarta and Sumatra. Nevertheless, watching motor sports on television provides Indonesians with exciting entertainment. For those who can afford to seek entertainment outside of their home, there are nightclubs, theaters, amusement parks, and surfing. Indonesia is the largest, multiple-island nation in the world; therefore, it has some of the best surfing beaches on earth. Grammar Notes: The circumfix “peN ... an” and the “ber” verbs The N represents a sound that changes depending on the first sound of the base. These sounds can appear as one of the nasals: m, n, ny, ng, and rarely r (as in zero). Sometimes the nasal comes before the first sound of the base, and other times it replaces the first sound. A considerable number of affixes can be attached to bases to derive nouns. Ajar can mean “to teach,” “to learn,” or “to study,” depending on the prefix and the ending: Pelajar means “student.” Pengajar means “teacher.” Sakit means “to be ill.” Pesakit means “ill person” or “someone who is ill.” Penyakit means “disease” or “illness.” With most verbs and adjectives, you use only “pe” without the additional letter/sound (n, ny, ng, etc.):
212
Renang means “to swim.” Perenang means “swimmer.” Most nouns with “peN…an” have a verbal base. They refer to the action that is expressed by the corresponding transitive, intransitive, or “ing” verb. Thus, a “peN...an” noun will correspond to the object of an action, refer to the place where the action of the corresponding verb typically occurs, or relate to the verb with the prefix ber. Ber + main becomes bermain (to play). Dia bermain gitar means “he plays guitar.” Per + main + an becomes permainan (game, performance, or show). Permainan gitar itu manarik sekali means “the guitar show was very awesome.”
