The period from 1 to 8 May is one of high days for all who are fond of the documentary film, when, for the sixth time in Leuven, DOCVILLE takes place; a film feast devoted to the national and international documentary film. DOCVILLE is a film festival that reflects trends and tendencies in both the national and the international world of documentary films, but at the same time it focuses on auteur cinema; cinematographically strong films with an opinion and a vision. In short: films with character. Van 1 tot en met 8 mei zijn het hoogdagen voor de liefhebbers van documentaire film. In Leuven vindt dan voor de 6e maal DOCVILLE plaats; een 8-daags filmfeest gewijd aan de nationale en internationale documentaire film. As usual, DOCVILLE organizes both a national and an international competition. Two prizes will be awarded: the Canvas Jury Award goes to the best film from the International Selection, whereas the SCAM Jury Award will be granted to the best Belgian Documentary selected for the National Selection. Winners will be indicated by the DOCVILLE Jury; a group of national and international documentary specialists from different branches in the world of film.

Opnieuw organiseert DOCVILLE een nationale en internationale competitie. Er worden twee prijzen uitgereikt: de ‘Canvas Juryprijs’ gaat naar de beste film uit de Internationale Selectie, de ‘SCAM Juryprijs’ wordt toegekend aan de Beste Belgische Documentaire uit de selectie. De winnaars worden aangeduid door de DOCVILLE jury; een groep nationale en internationale specialisten terzake, uit verschillende geledingen van de filmwereld.

BRAM VAN PAESSCHEN (°1979) – made his film debut at the International Short Film Festival Leuven with the intriguing docufiction Rookgordijn Boven Brussel (Smoke Screen over Brussels), his graduating film from Sint-Lukas Brussels. Afterwards came World of Blue, Land of O, his first selection for the DOCVILLE film festival. His latest film, Pale Peko Banti Mambo Ayikosake was part of the 2008 DOCVILLE festival.

BRAM VAN PAESSCHEN (°1979) – debuteerde in 2002 op het Internationaal Kortfilmfestival Leuven met de ophefmakende docufictie ‘Rookgordijn Boven Brussel’, zijn afstudeerproject voor Sint-Lukas Brussel. Daarna volgde ‘World of Blue, Land of O’, waarmee hij voor de eerste keer geselecteerd werd op DOCVILLE. Zijn laatste film ‘Pale Peko Bantu Mambo Ayikosake’ stond in 2008 op de DOCVILLE affiche.

CECILIE BOLVINKEL – holds a Masters Degree in Film Studies from the University of Copenhagen. Before coming to EDN in 2007 she worked as festival assistant for shorts & documentaries at the Danish Film Institute. At EDN Cecilie is in charge of the EDN Financing Guide, EDN members and producing various EDN events. Cecilie also writes for EDN’s international documentary magazine DOX.

CECILIE BOLVINKEL – behaalde haar master in filmstudies aan de Universiteit van Kopenhagen. Voor ze bij EDN (European Documentary Network) begon, werkte ze als contactpersoon voor festivals voor kortfilms en documentaires bij het Deense Filminstituut. Bij EDN is ze verantwoordelijk voor de EDN Financing Guide, EDN-leden en is ze betrokken bij verschillende EDN events. Cecilie schrijft ook voor het internationaal EDN documentaire magazine DOX.

MADS MIKKELSEN – is a programmer at CPH:DOX - the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, spending most of his waking hours nurturing the lively film culture in Copenhagen and elsewhere, while struggling to regain some of the identity lost to his more famous namesake by appearing as an extra in Lars von Trier films. He is a prolific writer on underground films and a co-founder of The Specialist Think Tank.

MADS MIKKELSEN – is programmator voor CPH:DOX, het internationaal documentaire filmfestival van Kopenhagen en vurig afnemer van de levendige filmcultuur van de Deense hoofdstad. Net als zijn beroemde naamgenoot wil hij ook wel eens voor de camera verschijnen, als figurant in de films van Lars von Trier bijvoorbeeld. Hij schrijft veel en graag over underground films and is mede-oprichter van ‘The Specialist Think Tank’.

De jury van de Internationale Competitie bestaat uit:

PATRICK DUYNSLAEGHER (°1953) – has been a film critic for Knack magazine since 1972. He wrote reviews for international magazines such as Variety, Sight & Sound, de Filmkrant and Vrij Nederland. He’s the author of two film books (a collection of his film reviews): 1000 Films and Blik op Zeven (Focus on Seven). He’s been chief editor for Focus Knack magazine since 2000.

PATRICK DUYNSLAEGHER (°1953) – is sinds 1972 filmrecensent voor Knack. Hij schreef daarnaast onder andere voor Variety, Sight & Sound, de Filmkrant, Vrij Nederland. Patrick Duynslaegher is auteur van twee filmboeken (verzamelingen recensies): ‘1000 films’ en ‘Blik op Zeven’ en is sinds 2000 hoofdredacteur van Focus Knack.

TOM BLEYAERT (°1975) – graduated as master in Politics and Social Science from the Ghent University. Started working for the national broadcaster VRT in 2000 at the sports department. Since 2001 he is responsible for the purchase of international documentaries for CANVAS.

TOM BLEYAERT (°1975) – studeerde Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen en Communicatiewetenschappen aan de RUG. Hij werkt sinds 2000 voor VRT, aanvankelijk voor de afdeling Sport, vanaf 2001 is hij verantwoordelijk voor de aankoop van buitenlandse documentaires voor CANVAS.

PAUL THILTGES – co-founder of the Luxembourg based Samsa Films, worked as producer and/or distributor for more than 40 live-action, animated and documentary feature films. Be it award-winning documentaries such as Workingman’s Death or art house hits like Kirikou and the Sorceress, he has an eye for creative talent with a wide appeal. Chairman of the Luxembourg Producers Association since 1996.

PAUL THILTGES – mede-oprichter van Samsa Film in Luxemburg, werkte als producent en/of distributeur mee aan meer dan 40 fictie-, animatie- en documentairefilms. Van de bekroonde documentaire ‘Workingman’s Death’ tot de art house hit ‘Kirikou en de Heks’, zijn oog valt steeds op creatief talent dat een breed publiek weet aan te spreken. Sinds 1996 voorzitter van de Luxemburgse producentenbond.

A huge space rocket test – Blue Streak – was to be fired in May 1964 in the dry Percival Lakes. The authorities sent in patrol officers to evacuate anyone living there to protect them from rocket debris. They discover a group of aboriginal women and children, still living traditionally, without any contact or knowledge of modern Australia. Yuwali, a 17-year old girl at the time gives a riveting account of their first encounter with the devilmen in the rocks that move (four wheel drives) and how their lives would change forever. They were given clothes (which they found useless), drank Cola (which they found tasteless) and were forced to leave their pet, a dingo, behind. The first contact experience was caught on film by the Australians. The Martu community now seems accustomed to its new way of life: watching archive footage of their people clad in nothing but a belt leaves them in stitches.

In 1964 start de Australische overheid met de lancering van ruimteraketten vanuit de Great Sandy Desert. Een groepje ambtenaren is belast met het uitzoeken van een geschikte plek om de brokstukken neer te laten komen. In het onherbergzame gebied stoten ze op een groepje nomaden, een kleine stam van enkel vrouwen en kinderen, zonder enig besef van het moderne Australië. De 62-jarige Yuwali, destijds 17, vertelt hoe het was om voor de eerste keer blanken te zien. Hoe de stam zich probeerde te verstoppen voor de ‘witte duivels’ met hun ‘bewegende rotsen’ en hoe het contact met de buitenwereld hun traditionele Aboriginalbestaan voorgoed veranderde. Ze kregen voor het eerst kleding (waarvan ze het nut niet inzagen), dronken Cola (wat ze afschuwelijk vonden) en moesten hun huisdier, een dingo, achterlaten. De Australische vorsers legden het eerste contact met deze laatste groep Aboriginals vast op film. Wanneer Yuwali de beelden bekijkt, barst ze in lachen uit.

In order to beat his midlife crisis, the passionate rock journalist Geoff Edgers decides to go after his dream: to bring back together the British band The Kinks. The group led by Ray Davies had its greatest hits – Lola, You Really Got Me – in the 1960s and 1970s. He has no idea how to reach lead singer Ray and his younger brother Dave Davis, but will not be put off by such a detail. Edgers talks to and makes music with Sting, the actress and singer Zooey Deschanel, REM’s Peter Buck, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock and former Kinks manager Clive Davis. Edgers invested countless phone calls and hundreds of e-mails before he realised that it was all rather more complex than he first thought in his boundless enthusiasm. It looks like it’ll be a mission impossible.

In de laatste rechte lijn naar zijn 40ste verjaardag besluit journalist Geoff Edgers dat het tijd is voor een nieuw doel in zijn leven. Een droom na jagen bijvoorbeeld, hoe absurd die ook mag zijn. Geoff wil de overblijvende groepsleden van The Kinks, die in de jaren ’70 hits hadden met onder meer ‘Lola’ en ‘You Really Got Me’, samenbrengen en de legendarische popgroep opnieuw leven inblazen. Hij heeft geen flauw idee hoe hij leadzanger Ray en zijn jongere broer Dave Davis zal traceren maar een echte fan laat zich niet afschrikken door zo’n akkefietje. Zijn queeste brengt hem bij muzikanten, artiesten, platengiganten en Kinksfans zoals Sting, REMs Peter Buck en Paul Weller. Allemaal zijn ze zijn grote reünieplan genegen maar verklaren ze hem zot. De broedertwist tussen de bandleden is immers veel groter dan Geoff had kunnen vermoeden…

‘A man loves his girlfriend the most, his wife the best and his mother the longest.’ Through telling observations and a sense of imagination, this creative documentary tells the story of the men in a woman’s life. The film deduces the universal story of women’s love for their father, brother, husband or son from personal conversations with seventy women, from young to old. Toddlers talk about their daddy and their big brother, adolescents complain about their stupid fathers, teenage girls gossip and giggle at their first flame, girls in their twenties talk about their first real relationships, a pregnant woman talks about her expectations concerning her unborn son, widows mourn over their deceased husbands and find comfort with their sons. All this together is more than just the sum of all parts: His and Hers is a heartwarming film about life and love.

The film traces the rise of one of the world’s premier architects, Norman Foster and his unending quest to improve the quality of life through design. Portrayed are Foster’s origins and how his dreams and influences inspired the design of emblematic projects such as the largest building in the world, Beijing Airport, the Reichstag, the Hearst Building in New York and works such as the tallest bridge ever in Millau France. In the very near future, the majority of mankind will abandon the countryside and live entirely in cities. Foster offers some striking solutions to the problems that this historic event will create. His most innovative project, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is a zero carbon, zero waste city functioning on green energy, a real Eco City. How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? Is photographed in a cinematic style that seeks to bring the spectacular nature of their size and scale to the big screen.

Every day, nuclear power plants spread over the entire world create large amounts of high-level radioactive waste and no one knows what to do with it. Therefore, barrels filled with this waste are placed in interim storages, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and societal changes. In Finland, scientists are working out the world’s first permanent repository, which will be hewn out of solid rock - a huge system of underground tunnels – and which has to hold out for at least 100,000 years, as this is how long the waste remains hazardous. Once the waste has been deposited and the repository is full, the facility is to be sealed off and never to be opened again. The scientists have taken account of climate changes, natural disasters, human forgetfulness and, above all, the unpredictable human curiosity. How do they prevent future civilizations, just like ours, from opening this mysterious construction? A delightful film about deadly serious questions.

Iedere dag produceren elektriciteitscentrales over de hele wereld tonnen hoog radioactief nucleair afval, waar niemand juist van weet wat er mee te doen. De vaten met afval worden gestapeld in tijdelijke opslagplaatsen die onkwetsbaar zijn voor natuurlijke rampen, oorlogen en andere menselijke ingrepen. In Finland zijn wetenschappers volop in de weer om een permanente opslagplaats uit te werken waarin zo’n slordige 300.000 ton nucleair afval veilig kan worden opgeborgen voor minstens 100.000 jaar, zo lang blijft er stralingsgevaar. De constructie is een tunnelsysteem gehouwen uit steen die kan worden afgesloten, om daarna nooit meer te worden geopend. De wetenschappers moeten rekening houden met klimaatsveranderingen, natuurrampen, menselijke vergeetachtigheid en vooral met het meest onvoorspelbare: de menselijke nieuwsgierigheid. Hoe voorkomen ze dat latere beschavingen, net als wij, dit mysterieuze bouwwerk niet proberen te openen? Een oogstrelende film over doodernstige vragen.

In My Enschede filmmaker Astrid Bussink returns to Enschede, a city in the east of the Netherlands where she studied and lived. On her last day there, 13th of may 2000, while packing her belongings to move to Amsterdam, a fireworks storage – located 50 meters across her house – exploded, leading to 23 people dying and over a 1000 people injured. The neighborhood looked liked it was bombed. Now, almost ten years later she decides to return to Enschede, to see how the city rebuild itself and how people deal with this extraordinary moment in their lives. She discovers people are still seeking for answers; who is responsible for what happened? Who can be blamed? Back in Enschede Astrid soon finds herself tangled up in a haunt for answers, but slowly starts to wonder whether any answer will ever be sufficient.

Filmmaakster Astrid Bussink studeerde en woonde jarenlang in Enschede. Ze zou verhuizen op 13 mei 2000, maar net op die dag ontplofte er een vuurwerkopslagplaats nog geen 50 meter van haar huis, met 23 doden en 1000 gewonden tot gevolg. Ze huurt een appartement op de plek waar haar oude huis ooit stond en probeert met de ramp in het reine te komen. Zoals vele overlevenden van de ramp zit ook zij met veel vragen. Ze praat met slachtoffers en met de vermeende verdachte André de Vries en ontdekt dat er heel wat wilde complottheorieën zijn gegroeid over de jaren.

A holiday in space: it will remain a far fantasy for most of us, but in pursuit of their ultimate dream, more and more multimillionaires are willing to pay $20 million to fulfill their childhood dream. In order to finance trips into space, the Russians now sell the third seat in the Soyuz capsule to extremely wealthy space tourists. American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari is one of these travelers and is preparing to be the first normal woman in space. In the meantime, space debris are covering the neighboring, isolated villages on the steppes. Local farmers earn a little extra from the waste, which is often made from the toxic materials. They use the titanium tanks to fix the roof or build a shed for their animals.

Meet Dr. Nakamats: scientist and inventor owning more than 3,300 patents, an absolute world record which leaves Thomas Edison, number two, way behind him. In his home country, Japan, the land of the Chindogu (useless inventions), Nakamats is a cult figure with many admirers. We owe our thanks to Dr. Nakamats for, among other things, the arousing Love Jet Spray and the PyonPyon spring shoes, but he also is, according to himself, the inventor of the floppy disk. The spry 80-year-old is still filled with new ideas, which he prefers to gain under water (for which he designed an under-water-notebook). He is determined to reach the age of 144 and therefore pays considerable attention to his nourishment: for 34 years already he takes a picture of every one of his meals. By combining these data with his blood values, he encountered a new brilliant invention: the ultimate food additive. He even won the Ig Noble Prize with it, a kind of parody on the real Noble Prize which awards prizes to remarkable, rather than useful scientific research.

Every country has its own version of the local celebrity, but nowhere the mediatized star culture is as far-reaching as in Italy. In Berlusconi’s videocracy, image and power, television and politics go hand in hand. Everybody who wants to mean anything in the TV-republic of Italy has to pass through the television screen. The Minister of Equal Opportunities started her career as a dancer in a TV-show, in Italy that is the way things are. Berlusconi is in control, at first as a TV-magnate, later on as president as well. About 80% of the Italians rely on television for information, or rather infotainment, because television channels are filled with entertainment shows with scarcely dressed women. Everything is shining, everybody smiles: on Italian television, there is no room for criticism, self-reflection or hard economic and social reality.

Ieder land heeft wel zijn lokale versie van de ‘BV’, maar nergens is de gemediatiseerde sterrencultus zo ingrijpend als in Italië. In de ‘videocratie’ van Berlusconi gaan beeld en macht, televisie en politiek hand in hand. Iedereen die iets wil betekenen in de tv-republiek Italië, moet langs het beeldscherm passeren. De Minister van Gelijke Kansen begon haar carrière als danseres in een tv-show, in Italië is dat de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Former Internet millionaire Josh Harris has always been fascinated by the influence of new media on day-to-day life. In 1999, Harris launched his own Big Brother avant la lettre by starting an experiment in New York City, in which around 100 artists were placed in a room, filmed, and followed on the Internet every second of the day. According to Harris, the project was an analogy for what Internet would really come to look like. Sleeping, showering, having sex -- everything was filmed, watched, and commented upon within the community. After the inevitable implosion of the project this Warhol of the web stuffed his apartment with cameras to provide Internet users with insight into everyday life of him and his (first real) girlfriend. The new project also failed. Filmmaker Ondi Timoner was one of the residents in the first project and spent 10 years worming her way around Harris’s life. We Live in Public tells the fascinating story of how man is more and more inclined to give up privacy to become part of an abstract community.

Het project was volgens Harris een analogie van hoe het internet er in werkelijkheid uit zou zien. Harris’ proefdieren werden volledig gek en het project werd opgedoekt door de overheid. Maar de ‘Warhol van het web’ wist niet van ophouden: hij propte zijn huis vol camera’s zodat het leven van hem en zijn (eerste echte) vriendin voor de rest van de wereld dag en nacht te volgen was. Ook dit project mondde uit in een nachtmerrie. Filmmaakster Ondi Timoner was een van de bewoners van het eerste project en dook in de duizenden uren beeldmateriaal die over, van en met Harris bestonden. Het resultaat is een fascinerend verhaal over hoe de mens steeds meer privacy opgeeft in ruil voor een abstract community gevoel.

Is there really something like the happy hooker? Filmmaker Didier Verbeek sorted it out and planted his camera in the kitchen of the Andromeda, one of the many sex bars along the road from Luik to Sint-Truiden. Gaily chattering, the girls count the 50-euro notes between different customers and talk with Ghislain, the sluggish landlord. Even though they hand over a part of their fees for rent, Ghislain is not a pimp: the girls are free, they come and go whenever they want. He treats them with respect, listens to their worries and comforts them when necessary. And when Ghislain is sick, the girls take care of him by turns. Au Bordel ce Soir presents a rare image of window prostitutes: selfassured women to whom sex is a commodity like any other. Of course they are all dreaming of what they will do with their savings in the future, but in the meantime they go to work every night without complaining.

Bestaat er echt zoiets als de ‘happy hooker’? Filmmaker Didier Verbeek zocht het uit en plantte zijn camera neer in het keukentje van de Andromeda, één van de vele seksbars langs de steenweg van Luik naar SintTruiden. Tussen de klanten door tellen de meisjes vrolijk kwetterend de briefjes van 50 euro en slaan ze een praatje met de gezapige huisbaas Ghislain. Ze staan dan wel een deel van hun gage af voor de ‘huur’ van hun kamer, Ghislain is geen pooier: de meisjes hebben alle vrijheid, ze komen en gaan wanneer ze willen. Hij behandelt hen met respect, luistert naar hun zorgen en troost hen als nodig. En wanneer Ghislain ziek is, stellen de meisjes een beurtrol op om voor hem zorgen. ‘Au Bordel ce Soir’ geeft een beeld van raamprostitutie zoals je het zelden te zien krijgt: zelfzekere vrouwen voor wie seks een handelswaar is als een ander. Uiteraard dromen ze allemaal van wat ze ‘later’ gaan doen met hun spaarcenten, maar ondertussen gaan ze zonder morren iedere nacht weer aan het werk.

For more than a year, filmmaker Manu Bonmariage followed Franco Dragone’s footsteps. The Italian - Walloon immigrant invented the concept of nouveau cirque and also the look and feel of Cirque du Soleil. Imaginary spectacle shows as Nouvelle Expérience (1990), Saltimbanco (1992), Alegría (1994) were immensely popular all over the world in no time and brought Dragone to Las Vegas, where he performed shows with Céline Dion for years. All of his dreamy creations were invented and worked out in the Dragone laboratory in La Louvière, the region in which he grew up. On the sidelines of the big productions is Othello, le Paseur, a Shakespeare adaptation that Dragone wants to dedicate to the region that once heartily welcomed him and his family. Bonmariage follows the progression of this show from the first rehearsals onwards, portraying Dragone’s character, his perfectionism and temperament, in his own, unique way.

Only a few seconds of a soccer game will do to turn the life of an entire family upside down. It is even more so for referees than for soccer players. For Kill the Referee, director Yves Hinant was granted unlimited access to EURO 2008 in order to follow the top referees from the catacombs of the stadium onto the field. The impact of the large amount of media attention becomes clear as referee Webb receives death threats after a decision against Poland. Even the Polish prime minister states that he ‘wishes to kill someone’. Before the tournament, he even got tipped off as referee for the finals, but because of the political uproar that arises, his opportunities start to shrink.

‘A woman nestling herself against a hill’ was the image the renown Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava wanted to recall with his design of the new prestigious train station of Luik-Guillemins, a future European junction and already the pride of the Walloon provinces in Belgium. Thierry Michel (Congo River, Katanga Business) followed the megalomaniac project from the first stone to the solemn inauguration, nine years later. Constructing this palace of steel, concrete and glass is an enormous challenge that from the beginning, with choosing the right concrete, is falling behind. From the gigantic construction site, which looks like a bomb crater, discussions concerning artistic choices, economic pragmatism and town planning begin to unfold before the filmmaker’s eyes. It seems that the architect’s ambitious plans do not stroke with the social reality of industrial Luik.

Together they decide to renovate an uninhabited house and turn it into a community centre. The film tries to tackle all prejudices that exist regarding students in technical schools. The prejudice that they are less educated lives on, even in the youngsters’ self-image, and some of them behave like it. Recht in de Ogen (Straight in the Eyes) tries to prove that high-quality vocational education exists and these students are no less than others. The pupils succeed in being the best example and in convincing you easily with their humour and their wisdom.

8 jongeren uit het beroepsonderwijs (7 jongens en 1 meisje) hebben geen zin in een traditioneel eindwerk. Ze willen iets anders. Ze besluiten samen een leegstaand huis te renoveren en om te bouwen tot buurthuis. De film tracht de vooroordelen die er huizen rond beroepsopleidingen te tackelen. Ook in het zelfbeeld van de jongeren leeft het vooroordeel dat ze een mindere vorm van opleiding volgen en sommigen gedragen zich hier dan ook naar. ‘Recht in de Ogen’ probeert aan te tonen dat er ook kwaliteitsonderwijs kan bestaan op het niveau van beroeps onderwijs en dat deze leerlingen niet minder zijn dan andere. De leerlingen slagen er in om zelf als beste voorbeeld te dienen en je gemakkelijk te overtuigen door hun humor en levenswijsheid.

Summer 2008. In West-Flanders a family of flax growers starts the new season. Walter and Wilfer Devos, two brothers past seventy, head the production. For fifty years now they work as if time stood still. The Flemish flax growers’ golden days are far gone, but the brothers are tough survivors. They have known hard times, but have farmed well in the end, not by modernizing, but by high-handedly continuing in their own way. For fifty years, their world has not changed, but the modern society with its regulations and prescriptions breaks in. Suddenly, the government threatens to close their familiar working place because it is no longer in conformity with the law. The brothers refuse to reconcile themselves with the situation, but a closure seems inevitable. Vlasman (Flaxman) is an ode to a lost generation of flax growers as well as to a way of living that is about to fade away.

Zomer 2008, in West-Vlaanderen begint een familie vlastelers aan het nieuwe seizoen. Twee broers, Walter en Wilfer Devos, de zeventig voorbij, staan aan het hoofd. Hun wereld is op een halve eeuw tijd niet veranderd maar de moderne samenleving met zijn reglementen en voorschriften dringt binnen. Plots is er het woord ‘zonevreemd’ en dreigt de overheid ermee hun vertrouwde werkplaats te sluiten omdat die niet meer conform de wetgeving is. De broers weigeren zich neer te leggen, maar een sluiting lijkt onvermijdelijk. ‘Vlasman’ is een ode aan een verdwenen generatie vlasmannen en aan een manier van leven die op het punt staat te verdwijnen.

November 26, 2009. At Brussels’ South Station filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Dumont falls victim to a con man who introduces himself as Gary Wilson. He claims his wallet has been stolen and asks Jean-Baptiste to lend him the hundred Euro he needs to buy a train ticket home. Gary gives him his address and promises to transfer him the money as soon as he can. Jean-Baptiste hands over the cash…and never hears from Gary again. That is, until he Googles his name and discovers he is dealing with a pro. Gary has been using the exact same trick in train stations and airports all over Europe for years, as stated by several people on various websites. This Gary begins to fascinate Jean-Baptiste, who decides to track him down. It’s not the hundred Euro he wants back, he just wants to find out who Gary is. He contacts other victims and asks them for their help. Every clue as to who Gary is and where he could be is welcome. But JeanBaptist’s mission turns out to be a bumpy road. One filled with fun situations, as well as doubts and ethical questions.

Jean-Baptiste geraakt gefascineerd door de figuur van Gary en wil hem opsporen. Aan zijn 100 euro denkt hij al lang niet meer, hij wil de man Gary beter leren kennen. Via het internet lanceert hij een oproep aan andere gedupeerden om hem te contacteren. Iedere aanwijzing om Gary te vinden is welkom. De queeste naar Gary blijkt een hobbelige reis... Especially in the United States, the appetite for money has turned the American Dream into a nightmare that has families losing their jobs, savings and homes. This is where the system takes on its most extreme forms. Teenagers are sent to jail to boost the profits of a private jail. Airline pilots are barely making ends meet. Companies have made deals with insurance companies that allow them to profit from the deaths of their employees. The consequences of this runaway greed are visible on the street, but where did it all begin? An investigation.

In 1964, Clouzot set out to direct L’Enfer featuring the twenty-six-year-old Romy Schneider and forty-two-year-old Serge Reggiani. L’Enfer’s images were rumoured to be incredible, but the film was shut down three weeks into production and the footage went unseen for over forty years. Enter Serge Bromberg, a renowned figure in the world of film restoration. He uncovered a treasure trove of imagery from the unfinished film and he and co-director Ruxandra Medrea interviewed members of the original L’Enfer crew to unearth the film’s behind-the-scenes story and contextualize Clouzot’s lost work. For all the making of movies in the world, few take us as deeply into the creative process as this one, creating the story of this beautiful downfall.

After ten years of correspondence, Michael Whyte was given unprecedented access to the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity, in London’s Notting Hill. The monastery, which was founded in 1878, is home to the Discalced Order of Carmelite Nuns, into whose distinct and distant world Whyte’s film respectfully dips. What is revealed is not so much a group of people hiding from the world, but rather a lifestyle that engages with the problems of existence in a radically different way. In place of intimate relationships, there is an intense and often turbulent connection with God characterized by inner tussles and painful periods of doubt. In place of the manic hustle and bustle of outside life, there is the challenge of facing oneself, all the time, soberly and in silence. Whyte approaches the monastery as a busy, industrious place, and the nuns’ work on the spirit as almost a practical matter.

It is difficult to imagine our society without plastic. From a baby’s pacifier to rubber ducks, from hairdryers to cars, the material is everywhere. It seems we are living in the Plastic Age, with Europe producing about 60 million tons of plastic every year. Globally, we are looking at an annual production of 240 million tons. Plastic is all around us and it won’t go away: our oceans are already home to more plastic than plankton and even our blood contains traces of plastic. Filmmaker Werner Boote spoke to company owners, environmentalists, scientists and regular citizens who are amazed at the amount of plastic they have in their homes. Despite the evident threat to the environment and our health, the industry refuses to consider switching to biodegradable materials. What is the reason behind their behavior? Who has an interest in supporting the status quo, allowing our planet to be covered under a thick layer of plastic?

The children’s series Flipper, starring a clever dolphin as its main character, was a huge succes throughout the sixties and made people all over the world flock to dolphinariums. It is obvious that people love dolphins, but it is less certain that they feel the same way about us. Dolphins living in captivity are prone to disease and many of them only survive a few years. Taiji, a town on the Japanese coast, is the mecca of the dolphin industry: every year thousands of dolphins are captured there and sold off to many different dolphinariums. The remaining animals are slaughtered, far away from the public eye, in a desolate bay. Cameras and environmentalists have always been kept far away, until now.

De kinderserie ‘Flipper’, met een pientere dolfijn in de hoofdrol, was in de jaren ‘60 een fenomenaal succes en over de hele wereld zijn dolfinaria razendpopulair bij jong en oud. Mensen zijn gek op dolijnen. Maar of die liefde wederzijds is, valt zeer te betwijfelen. Gevangenschap, zoals in een dolfinarium, bevalt de dolfijnen zo slecht dat ze er bij bosjes ziek worden en sterven. Het Japanse kustplaatsje Taiji is het mekka van de dolfijnenindustrie: ieder jaar worden er hordes dolfijnen samengedreven en gevangen om voor grof geld te worden verkocht aan dolfinaria over de hele wereld. De overschot van de ‘vangst’ wordt koudweg afgemaakt. De slachting gebeurt stiekem in een afgelegen baai, ver van camera’s en buiten het zicht van vervelende milieuactivisten.

This was brought on by an increasing western appetite for sushi, making tuna more high in demand than ever before. If the world continues consuming fish as it is now, scientists predict, most the seafood we know will be gone by 2048. Oceans will be filled with alges, plankton, worms and a huge overpopulation of jellyfish. This will endanger our entire ecosystem, to the point of mass starvation. Can we imagine a world without fish? And more importantly, do we even want to?

Naomi Klein’s controversial book The Shock Doctrine argues that the rise of capitalism in a certain country can often be traced back to a disaster, revolution or war recently hitting that specific country. A comparison is made to the shock therapy psychiatric patients were exposed to in the sixties. Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross, who previously worked on The Road to Guantanamo together, are now bringing the book to the big screen. Their documentary offers a worrying look at historical events, such as the 1973 military coup led by Pinochet and the fall of the Soviet Union. As the primary treating physician in this economic form of shock therapy, Klein points to economist Morgan Friedman as the main catalyst. In a reconstruction, dotted with old video footage and interviews, Winterbottom and Whitecross show that the introduction of capitalism in a previously non-capitalist country has always led to a small group of people amassing great wealth, while the majority sank down even further into poverty.

In 2007 the legendary American duo The White Stripes toured Canada. Besides playing the usual venues they challenged themselves and played in busses, cafés and for Indian tribal elders. Music video director Emmett Malloy followed the band and managed to capture both the special tour, extraordinary concert versions of the band’s minimalist, raw, blues-inspired rock songs and the special relationship between the extroverted Jack White and the introspective Meg White – a formerly married couple who for a long time claimed to be siblings. The film makes striking use of the band’s concert colors: red, white and black.

In 2007 besloten Jack en Meg White om voor een grootse wereldtour, eerst een kleine tour door Canada te plannen. Naast de geplande optredens in dorpen verspreid over Canada plannen ze ook telkens een onaangekondigd optreden op de dag zelf. Zo duiken ze op in cafés, bussen en voor een Indiaanse stam. With a singer who had never sung, a guitarist who had only been playing for six months, and a composer who made it to number one with the first song he ever wrote, an instant legend was born. The Doors where an instant success and Jim Morrison quickly became a demigod. Narrated by Johnny Depp, the documentary includes footage of a drunken and tripping Morrison who made a habit of appearing in such a state in the studio and on stage, to the great annoyance of the other band members. Most of this footage was shot by Paul Ferrara, a friend of Morrison from the UCLA Film School, and it is interspersed with news excerpts that capture the era in which the band was performing. The story ends abruptly when Jim Morrison dies at age 27 in a bathtub in Paris.

Juan Accidentes Dominguez is working on his biggest case ever. On behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers he is taking on multinational Dole Food in a groundbreaking legal battle. The issue is Dole’s use of a banned pesticide that was known by the company to cause sterility. The product was forbidden in the US over five years ago, but that has not stopped Dole from using it to protect their harvest. Upon completion of this documentary by Fredrik Gertten, Dole pulled out all the stops to keep this movie from ever being shown, going as far as boycotting filmfestivals where the movie would be screened. It was only when the Swedish parliament got involved, that Dole backed off.

Someone discovered his singing talents and now he performs on the streets and sells his CD’s to the spectators. Cynthia lives in a neighbourhood where gangs shoot at each other, but has her saxophone as a means of escape. Pinky studies hard to realise her dream – a stone house –, dancing to lighten her life. Music and dance turn out to be the means of survival for these children. These dreams do not stand on their own. They are a metaphor for the hopeful future of a country trying to drag itself up from a mire of poverty and violence. Leaving Mandela Park shows the incredible resilience and vitality of these children.

Among them, there are pregnant women, young lovers, old people. They have exhausted and feverish eyes. In them, one can detect intense fear and hope. Caroline and Colette are social workers. All day long, they receive families who are seeking asylum in France to assist them with the process. Every day, there are new arrivals, from the four corners of the world, by charter plane or by covered truck. How can they deal with the overwhelming flood tide of all this distress, of all these needs? Caroline is young, impulsive and irascible. Colette, older, is compassionate and disorganized. Opposite them, the arrivals, exhausted, wounded but obstinate – exasperating at times and moving at others. Fetim is a a Saharawi refugee separated from her mother as a toddler and who is now living in the Polisario governed refugee camps in the Western Sahara. She can be reunited with her mother through a UN family reunion program. Filming her story filmmakers Violeta Ayala and Dan Fallshaw travel to discover a hidden truth that takes them on a journey they could never have imagined: the harsh reality of slavery. They are forced to bury the film tapes in the desert and all of a sudden find themselves in the middle of a humanitarian and political storm. During the premiere of the film at the Sydney Film Festival the Polisario manifested, accused the film makers of lies and took along one of the main characters of the film who withdrew his testimonies. For the Polisario this film is a political statement which benefit Morocco, with whom the Polisario disputes the Western Sahara.

Ze staan plots in het midden van een humanitaire én politieke storm. Op de première in Sydney daagde de Polisario op om de documentaire als leugens af te doen en bracht zelfs een van de hoofdrolspelers mee, die plots zijn getuigenissen introk. Voor hen was de documentaire enkel een politiek pamflet voor Marokko, waarmee ze in strijd liggen omtrent West-Sahara.

Australian artist and film maker George Gittoes spent two years in the Talibanoccupied north of Pakistan looking into the armed struggle of fundamentalists against the unholy film industry – a cheap mix of Bollywood and American 80’s action movies. The surreal war situation there doesn’t stop local filmmakers from making lowbrow movies with large doses of half-naked women, action heroes, and pulp fiction. This flourishing, outlaw, micro budget movie industry may seem easy money but Taliban moralists are less appreciative of this, expressing their discontent by burning video stores to the ground. Shootings are covert, actresses need to flee the country sometimes and film directors keep low profile. At the same time, he discovers that the Taliban is also disseminating a form of entertainment that people are just as greedy for: recordings of real beheadings and executions.

Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos, as all at once, a tidal wave of humanity attempts to return home by train. It is the Chinese New Year. The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance. Sixteen years ago, the Zhangs abandoned their young daughter to find work in the city, consoled by the hope that their wages would lift their daughter into a better life. Now they work long hours in one of the numerous gray factories that supplies the West with cheap clothing. That said, the most toilsome endeavor is the New Year trip.

Since 1996 film director Zhao Liang has been tracking the lives of petitioners who come to Beijing to visit the Complaints Office, and who find themselves stuck there for years on end, waiting to air grievances against local abuses of justice. Peasants thrown off their land, workers from factories which have gone into liquidation, small homeowners who have seen their houses demolished but received no compensation... All types of cases are represented. Obliged to wait in the city, without much hope of winning redress, complainants find themselves living in the now-demolished Petition Village, a shanty town in which poverty reigns. Despite their living conditions, the interviewees generally state their determination to stay and see their case through.

Sinds 1996 filmt regisseur Zhao Liang de ‘aanklagers’: mensen die vanuit alle uithoeken van China afzakken naar de hoofdstad om er bij het Bureau Aanklachten officieel klacht neer te leggen tegen om het even welk onrecht. Boeren die werden verdreven van hun land, mensen wiens huis werd vernietigd en wachten op compensatie, fabrieksarbeiders die na sluiting zonder boe of ba op straat werden gezet. Het duurt vaak maanden, zo niet jaren, eer hun ‘zaak’ voorkomt en in afwachting van de rechtspraak zoeken ze onderdak in een sloppenwijk achter het station, omgedoopt tot het ‘Aanklagersdorp’. Ondanks hun vreselijke levensomstandigheden en de geringe hoop dat recht ooit zal zegevieren, tonen de aanklagers zich vastberaden hun zaak uit te zitten tot het bittere einde. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the establishment art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, such as Spike Jonze, Harmony Korine, Shepard Fairey and Ed Templeton, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes in as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960’s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb’s salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy’s paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Within these limitations, they proved themselves curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists. Their circle includes: Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.

Herbert Vogel werkte heel zijn leven als postbeambte, zijn vrouw Dorothy was bibliothecaris en samen hebben ze één van de meest uitgebreide verzameling moderne kunst uitgebouwd. In de vroege jaren ’60, toen minimalisme en conceptuele kunst nog in zijn kinderschoenen stond, kocht het koppel werk van jonge onbekende kunstenaars. Dorothy’s maandloon hielden ze om van te leven, dat van Herb ging volledig op aan kunst. Ze kochten alles wat ze mooi vonden en wat voldeed aan twee voorwaarden: het moest betaalbaar zijn en het moest binnen hun eenkamerflat in Manhattan passen. De Vogels bleken over een uitzonderlijk neus voor talent te beschikken. Zelfs binnen hun budgettaire en ruimtelijke limieten kochten ze werk van onder meer Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold en vele andere, ondertussen beroemde kunstenaars.

Every single object, from our telephones and our toothbrushes to the latest gadget we’ve spoiled ourselves with, has been designed. As good design is supposed to look as though no design was involved, we do not generally think about this. Another thing we take for granted is the extent to which the look of an object communicates to us what purpose it serves, how expensive it is, and if it’s something that’s suited to our lifestyle. As consumers, we have no idea how much work goes into achieving that effect. ‘Every object tells a story’, says Jonathan Ive, head of Industrial Design at Apple and one of the most influential product developers in the world. ‘Objectified’ explores the impact design has on our lives and how the things we surround ourselves with have become a means of self-expression, influencing how we see ourselves and how we choose to present ourselves to others.

Vaak op een heel subtiele manier, goede design moet immers ‘on-ontworpen’ voelen. We staan er ook niet bij stil dat we onmiddellijk allerlei assumpties maken wanneer we een voorwerp zien: waar het voor dient, hoe duur het ongeveer zal zijn, of het iets voor ons is. Als eindgebruiker heb je bijna geen notie van wat voor ontwerpprocessen daaraan vooraf zijn gegaan. ‘Elk object vertelt een verhaal’, aldus Jonathan Ive, hoofd industriële vormgeving bij Apple en één van meest invloedrijke productontwikkelaars. ‘Objectified’ onderzoekt de impact van design op ons leven, hoe de spullen waarmee we ons omringen steeds meer een vorm van zelfexpressie geworden zijn, van hoe we onszelf zien en hoe we willen dat andere mensen ons zien.

In a world where firearms are simultaneously glorified and condemned by the media, there’s a small group of people in the Antwerp underground that feel quite differently about guns. Respectful towards his subject, filmmaker Jason Boënne, gives the floor to the gun freaks. The Small Army of the Silver Mountain is a film about weapons, proud Antwerp sinjoren and couleur locale. Winner of the VAF Wildcard for Best Documentary at the International Short Film Festival Leuven 2009.

In een wereld waar wapens afwisselend door de media worden veroordeeld of verheerlijkt, gaat er onder de grond van Antwerpen een groep mensen schuil die een heel andere relatie met vuurwapens hebben. In de zorgsector worden steeds meer bezuinigingen doorgevoerd. Als gevolg van het dichtdraaien van de geldkraan wordt zorg geautomatiseerd. Filmmaakster Kim Brand werkte jarenlang als weekendhulp in een tehuis, tot ook zij omwille van bezuiningen moest vertrekken. Bedrijfslogica en ‘efficiency’ veranderden het verzorgingstehuis in een zorgfabriek. De documentaire velt geen oordeel over de situatie, maar toont zuiver registrerend het verstilde leven van de ouderen en de drukke vergaderingen achter de schermen.

This is the story of Free and Happy, the Royal Harmonic Parade of Oostkamp, which exists for over 50 years but in recent years has to cope with a serious lack of members. The film follows the harmony’s trail for a few months as they struggle their membership problem. Tension is rising high in the group until they decide to take action. But will this be the salvation Free and Happy is hoping for? Won the ACE-award for Best National Student Short at the Filmfestival Ghent 2009.

‘Helden van de harmonie’ vertelt het verhaal van de Koninklijke Harmonie ‘Vrij en Blij’ uit Oostkamp, West-Vlaanderen, die al meer dan 50 jaar bestaat. De film volgt de harmonie gedurende enkele maanden. Ze toont hoe het ledentekort steeds problematischer wordt en voor de nodige spanning zorgt binnen de harmonie. Uiteindelijk besluiten ze over te gaan tot actie, maar of die actie de redding zal betekenen voor ‘Vrij en Blij’ is nog maar de vraag. Zo zeggen de mensen altijd vriendelijk dag en krijgt hij af en toe iets te drinken. Bovendien heeft hij er enkele jaren gewoond. Fred blijft zijn job met liefde uitoefenen en ondanks alles blijft hij vrolijk fluiten.

The short documentary Les Invisibles takes place at the trainstation Brussels North. It’s a film about noticing and getting noticed. In the indifferent world of the trainstation, it is hard to realy see the individual. The clock tics, trains pass and people come and go. Still, everyone has his own aspirations and dreams. Everyone wants to get noticed, one way or the other. The camera carefully places itself inbetween these different lives, and thus for a short time pays attention to each and every one of them.

De korte documentaire ‘Les invisibles’ speelt zich af in het Brusselse Noord-station. Het is een film over zien en opgemerkt worden. In de onverschillige wereld die een station vaak is, is het moeilijk om het individu te kunnen zien. De stationsklok tikt verder, treinen passeren en mensen komen en gaan. Toch heeft iedereen hier zijn eigen aspiraties en dromen, een eigen blik in de toekomst. Allemaal willen ze op één of andere manier opgemerkt worden. De camera verplaatst zich langzaam tussen deze verschillende levens, gaat er voorbij of keert terug en staat zo even stil bij elk van hen.

In 1999 Canada cede a territory to the Inuit. The size of this area is similar to the size of Western Europe. No more than 25.000 people live there. The Inuit choose their capital: Iqaluit. A city that wants to be bigger than she actually is. Only accessible by plane. 6.000 residents, 2.500 cars. Only 25 kilometers of roads. Berlin spent 1 month in the Arctic in the new capital city of the Inuit. The material is documentary-like, the result was a theatre performance. From 2009 Iqaluit goes on tour in the form of an installation. The audience enters the metal framework of a show-hut. 7 screens showing 7 different scenes of exactly the same length. The screens are autonomous. There is no chronological order. A fragmented impression of Iqaluit on the rhythm of the city.

In 1999 staat Canada een stuk grond af aan de Inuit. Een gebied zo groot als WestEuropa. Er wonen slechts 25.000 mensen. De Inuit kozen hun hoofdstad: Iqaluit. Een stad die groter wil zijn dan ze in wezen is. Enkel bereikbaar per vliegtuig. 6.000 inwoners, 2.500 auto’s. Nauwelijks 25 kilometer wegen. Berlin verbleef anderhalve maand op de noordpool, in de nieuwe hoofdstad van de Inuit. Aan de wereldpolitiek is dit land ontsnapt, maar de groeipijnen zijn even groot, balancerend tussen oeroude tradities en nieuwe wegen. Het materiaal is documentair, de uitwerking een installatie. Het publiek stapt een metalen skelet in iglovorm binnen. 7 schermen, 7 verschillende scènes, elk exact dezelfde duur. Elk scherm staat op zichzelf, er is geen chronologische volgorde. Een fragmentarische indruk van Iqaluit op het ritme van de stad.

THE ROAD TO LEUVEN

Leuven is a relatively small city (100.000 inhabitants), 20 kilometers near Brussels. Leuven is widely known for two things: it harbours one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe. The K.U.Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 25.000 students today.

By plane Leuven is a 20 minute drive from the Brussels National Airport (40 minutes by train). The lowcost airline company, Ryanair, flies to Charleroi from 10 different cities. Due to the creative input of students, it always stayed a vivid, young and creative environment. In a city where the historical buildings are only surpassed by the number of pubs and bars (following our last count:180, but it’s possible we’ve missed some) there is always something going on. Leuven harbours a series of interesting cultural organisations and events. Until recently, China was a country shrouded in mystery to most Europeans. Western media have, however, started taking more notice of the East. At the same time more Chinese media have started reaching our part of the world, too. Chinese society appears to be in transition and local documentary filmmakers have been working hard to capture and to frame the significant changes. More and more journalists and artists use documentaries to express themselves, often resulting in films of high journalistic and artistic quality. Their work deserves to be shown and seen in Europe, as well as in their home country.

Tot voor kort was China voor de meeste Europeanen één groot vraagteken. De laatste jaren richten westerse media echter steeds vaker de blik naar het oosten en ook andersom bereiken meer en meer Chinese media onze contreien. De Chinese samenleving lijkt zich in een overgangsfase te bevinden en lokale documentairemakers spannen zich in om de soms ingrijpende veranderingen te vatten en te verwerken. Steeds meer journalisten en kunstenaars drukken zich uit aan de hand van een documentaire en de resultaten getuigen vaak van een grote journalistieke en artistieke kwaliteit. Ze verdienen het dan ook om tevens in Europa onder de aandacht gebracht te worden.

This is why we are offering New Chinese Documentary Beyond the Frame on Saturday, 8 May, in cooperation with VAF, the Flemish Audiovisual Fund and Scam. This learning activity was put together by Peter Fraser of the British Insight Education.

Op zaterdag 8 mei organiseren wij daarom ‘New Chinese Documentary Beyond the Frame’, in samenwerking met VAF, het Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds en Scam. Deze vormingsactiviteit is samengesteld door Peter Fraser van het Britse Insight Education.

New Chinese Documentary Beyond the Frame will be a meeting place for filmmakers, artists, writers and academics who are investigating the new Chinese documentary within the context of Chinese journalism and contemporary art. We will debate such questions as: how are trends in Chinese society presented in local documentaries? What influences these filmmakers? What are their artistic and social concerns? How do filmmakers use multimedia en internet to give their work a wider reach? Members of the debate panel are Zhou Hao, Rob Rombout, Tianqi Yu, Dr Katie Hill, Jeroen Groenewegen en Luke Robinson.

Tijdens ‘New Chinese Documentary Beyond the Frame’ worden filmmakers, kunstenaars, schrijvers en academici samengebracht die de nieuwe Chinese documentaire in de context van Chinese journalistiek en hedendaagse kunst onderzoeken. DAY OF THE DOC Fri, May 7 (10H30 - 17H) An impressive documentary combines a strong idea and an original starting point with a professional execution . It is easy enough to come up with an idea, but how do you go about putting together a budget? Who can you talk to about subsidies? Which type of project is most likely to be subsidized? How do you find a TV channel willing to coproduce your documentary? What about international coproductions? And which other financial possibilities are there, nationally and internationally? The Day of the Doc is your chance to get all those questions answered. The Flemish Audiovisual Fund, MEDIA and the European Documentary Network will be giving practice oriented lectures. Afterwards, all participants can join a round of “speed dating” in which they can have a one-onone with subsidizing institutions as well as national and international producers. Throughout the day, the DOCVILLE archives are available for browsing. We close off our day with a unique screening of the film Capturing Reality: the Art of Documentary. Programme 10H30: WELCOME 11H00 - 12H30: LECTURES - Flemish Audiovisual Fund - Karla Puttemans To documentary filmmakers in Flanders, the VAF is and remains a crucial partner. The VAF consistently supports authors’ documentaries and supports documentaries that make it to the big screen. Karla Puttemans, who leads the team treating the applications for subsidies at VAF, explains which conditions an application should meet, how to submit one and what VAF’s priorities are in their subsidy policy. - MEDIA - Bert Lesaffer Many documentaries tackle topics that are internationally relevant and some of them absolutely need European financial support. But the rules and regulations of European subsidies can be pretty tricky. Or is it actually easier than we think? Bert Lesaffer of MEDIA Desk Belgium – Flanders tells us more. - European Documentary Network - Cecilie Bolvinkel In order to make a documentary, you do not only need governmental support, but often the support of a private partner too. In addition to national TV channels, there are hundreds of interesting international partners who can


help make your project a reality. The European Documentary Network is an international organization that supports documentary filmmakers by helping them get in touch with each other and with interesting partners.
