Snelle technologische ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij – en de impact daarvan op alle sectoren van onze economie – vragen om een andersoortige afstemming tussen onderwijs, bedrijfsleven en overheid. Onderwijs- en kennisinstellingen dienen zichzelf actief op te hoogte te houden van de sterktes en behoeftes van de regio om up-to-date onderwijs te kunnen bieden. Bedrijven willen blijven concurreren met die ontwikkelingen en dienen te investeren in human capital en innovatieontwikkeling. De Centres of expertise en Centra voor innovatief vakmanschap vervlechten deze krachten om zo economische, maat schappelijke en sociale waarde voor onderwijs, ondernemers en overheid te creëren.
In our modern day society, technological developments occur quickly and on a vast scale. They affect our economy in every sector imaginable. This requires a different way of collaborating between educational institutions, governments and businesses. Even more than in the past, educational institutions have to work with their environment, adapting to the needs and wants of their region in order to deliver up to date educational programs. Companies have to keep afoot as well by investing in their own human capital agenda and innovation policy in order to remain competitive. The Centres of Expertise and Vocational Innovation connect and strengthen these forces to create economic and public value for education, entrepreneurship and government.

Core business of the Centres
In Centra wordt een stabiel samenwerkings verband tussen bedrijfsleven en mbo en hbo instellingen gerealiseerd. Dit verband zet zich in voor een kruisbestuiving tussen onderwijs & onderzoek en valorisatie & ondernemen. Door het hebben van een business model, waarin gedeelde publieke en private investeringen zijn opgenomen, worden Centra aangespoord om financieel levensvatbaar te worden. De kerntaken van Centra variëren tussen: het werken aan up-to-date beroeps onderwijs, het incuberen van onderzoeks- en innovatiebroedplaatsen voor bedrijfsleven en het ontwikkelen van programma’s voor Leven Lang Leren. De balans tussen deze taken verschilt per Centrum omdat deze altijd wordt bepaald door de behoeftes van de regio of partners van het Centrum. Zo creëert ieder Centrum zijn eigen niche en meerwaarde. En dat werpt zijn vruchten af: er zijn nog maar weinig fenomenen die zo nieuw zijn en zich toch zo snel ontwikkelen als deze unieke vorm van publiek privaat samen werken. Het netwerk van Centra startte met slechts 7 pilot centra in 2011 en heeft sindsdien een extreme groei doorgemaakt.
The Centres of Expertise and Vocational Innovation represent a collaboration between entrepreneurs, vocational schools and higher education institutions. They aim to achieve a cross-pollination between research & education and valorisation & entrepreneur ship. Shared investments of both public and private parties are embedded in a solid business model that creates financial viability. The main tasks of a Centre vary between: creating up-to-date professional education, incubate innovation for entrepreneurs and develop Life Long Learning programs. The emphasis and specifics of these goals are determined by the context and partners of a Centre. Therefore, each Centre creates its own niche and market value. This specific type of public private collaboration has gained great potential and support in a short amount of time: the network of Centres started in 2011 with only 7 pilots and has expanded ever since.
