This brochure shows the work and working methods of VMX Architects. Since its establishment in 1995, the office has worked on various projects – projects from the scale of objects and utilities, to urban studies, but with an emphasis on buildings for housing, living, learning and health care. Apart from showing the diversity in commissions and solutions, this brochure is meant to show the intensity of the work. Therefore, key projects have been selected. The brochure is meant to have the character of an overview of the current state of affairs. We do not endeavour to take a theoretical position with it. We want to show how and on what vmx ‘works’.

VMX
The establishment of VMX Architects not only marked the beginning of an ambitious office, but coincided with an important political change in the conditions under which architecture was produced in the Netherlands. The Dutch government’s hands-on building programme was abandoned in the mid 1990’s which left an opening for privatisation and a free market – a new context with new responsibilities for an architect. Educated in a period of social responsibility, although fully aware of the current situation, VMX strives to give a new meaning and content to architecture.
During the past years more than twenty projects have been realised. VMX approaches architecture from a pragmatic and optimistic stance. The office develops designs on the basis of a given situation, bearing in mind economic and cultural conditions. Practical issues such as programme, function and location are important elements in the design process. VMX sees it as their task to search for strategies that reach a creative integration. The design process is made recognisable by VMX’s drive to create realistic solutions without being predictable. The work of VMX Architects expresses the option of architecture as custom made. Working under strict perimeters the office does not build ‘more of the same’ but builds specific and unique solutions. In the current ‘pluriform’ state of architecture and urbanism, VMX sets itself apart by its independent building works. The design process in which these buildings are conceived can be explained in three words: Experiment, Refinement and Optimism. These words characterise the nature of the work.
Experiment The desire to derive new solutions means the office has to carry out much research. This is experimental in character, especially in the design phase. The refusal to be satisfied with standard solutions has a logical consequence in that the office must come up with alterna tives. Alternative experiments for programmatic organisation, for materialisation and production methods are conducted on all levels. For VMX Architects it is not unusual during the design process to produce realistic (1:1) models from which commissioners and other parties involved evaluate the proposals. Besides assessing the end result, the production of such prototypes also gives an opportunity to test production methods. The experimental character of the work is limited to the design phase. This is the moment in which new insights are gathered. Only after the various experiments are at a satisfactory level, the reali sation of the building starts.

Refinement The architecture VMX Architects endeavours to make comes not only from the result of research but also from a process of refine ment. This process is not merely seen in terms of materialisation but is applicable to diverse aspects. In the most general sense the process stands for the amount of energy VMX invests in the forming of the solutions. Therefore in the design strategy of VMX a lot of attention is given to refining design ideas. The process of refinement is also applied to the organisation of programme, plans, sections, facades, materialisation and production method. In the built work the refinement process is expressed in the logical, and seemingly simple way, in which spaces are created and unusual materi als are applied.

Optimism A belief in new possibilities is the way in which one could sum up the work of VMX Architects. Instead of being cynical, VMX is optimistic. In the architecture of the office this optimism translates as striving for contemporary architecture. No reassurance is sought in known ima ges, patterns, materials or construction meth ods. New production methods and provoca tive materials are preferably sought. Optimism results in architecture that doesn’t look in on itself but is open to new influences, not only in spatial terms by means of glass facades and cantilevers, but also in the material and techni cal sense where new possibilities are investigat ed and applied.

M. v.d. Wiel, rector Stedelijk Gymnasium Den Bosch
“VMX is able to put itself between the different, sometimes conflicting wishes and demands. VMX keeps on asking until the question behind the question is also posed. In my opinion, although the office produces original architecture, they always take a serving position towards the wishes of the commissioners.” Mark ter Bals, DMO projectmanager KCN, Gemeente Utrecht
“The people of VMX have stimulated our thoughts immensely. Because VMX is not hindered by traditions, they gave us the opportunity to approach the design of the school differently.” M. v.d. Wiel, rector Stedelijk Gymnasium Den Bosch
Benadering
Approach
The goal of VMX Architects is to make architecture (and not just buildings). In order to make architecture, at least two things are necessary: good commissions and good com missioners. By approaching both things critically the potential of every commission is mapped out. In the VMX approach the listen ing to commissioners is combined with reading between the lines of requirements. Analytical attention is interchanged with pragmatic solu tions and alternative possibilities. Programme, conditions and starting points are not regarded as given but are questioned by personal knowledge, research and experience. The whole process is meant to make possibilities clear and to encourage commissioners to make more radical choices.
The making of architecture for VMX does not however mean they neglect client service. The office is convinced even more that their will to look at questions again and research differ ent options has a positive influence on the end result. In formulating solutions for spatial and functional questions it is important for VMX to find new solutions. Already used solutions are therefore not reused. The working on designs is of a high level and can be synonymous with the building up of knowledge. The making of studies and participating in competitions offers a possibilitiy to add to the specific knowledge taken from projects more general ideas about architecture and urbanism. The approach of VMX from the beginning has attracted the attention of both professionals and non-profes sionals. Apart from the attention of the built work, attention is also given to VMX through exhibitions. More details of studies, competi tions and exhibitions in which VMX participat ed can be found in the VMX Profile at the back of this brochure.

Stichting Altrecht has commissioned VMX Architects to design the accommodation for 24 delinquent, lightly mentally handicapped persons with heavy behavioural disturbances (sglvg+). The project is a part of a series of 5 similar institutions that will be built in separate locations throughout the country in the coming years, under a scheme headed ‘De Borg’.
Wier2 is to be built on the wooded grounds of Altrecht in Den Dolder. The project aims to create a quiet accommodation for this target group, with a close relation to the surrounding nature. An existing therapy complex, ’Boerhaave’ has already been built nearby and likewise makes use of the harmonious setting.
The intention is to realize a volume that is as compact as possible, in order to limit impact on the surrounding woodland. In this way, it has been resolved as an extruded 4-storey baton, lying adjacent and parallel to the road. On the two upper floors circulation runs centrally along its length, allowing accommodation to be arranged along the outer walls. On the lower floor, a public route through the building leads to the covered main entrance, and on the first floor, a ramp passes through the volume, providing access for the inhabitants into two secured gardens either side of the building. The patients’ rooms are situated in four living units on the first and second floor with a view to the forest. The ground floor contains office spaces, the sous-terrain therapy rooms and a gym. An important requirement from the client was that damage-resistant materials must be used, given the patients’ sometimes aggressive behaviour. The facades of the building will be covered with sprayed concrete, which will provide the durable finish. It will furthermore facilitate the chiselled shape, whilst creating a solid, homogeneous volume which will have the appearance, with time, of a mossy rock lying in the forest.

Willem Arntsz Huis
Willem Arntsz House
The Altrecht foundation commissioned VMX Architects to design a new building for the psychiatric facility Willem Arntsz Huis in the inner city of Utrecht. The site is an existing city block, partly replacing the old hospital. It is surrounded by a number of protected historical buildings around the block.
One of the main challenges was trying to accommodate the new building in a historical inner city context. The solution was a crossshaped building set within the quadrangle of the existing perimeter buildings, thus creating four external spaces. In this, the building will not be read as an isolated object, but rather through each of these four spaces. The main volume of the new building is concentrated in the centre of the site. Different façade materials are used to emphasize a distinctive character for each of the four exterior spaces that the building frames.
The program consists of two parts: a treatment part, containing office-like spaces and a living part, where patients who need less care will stay on a temporary basis. One of the main ideas of the treatment is the concept of “normalization” – trying to create a more normal life for the patients and avoiding institutionalization. The idea of normalization has been translated in the design into the so-called “hotel concept”. This means the public functions like the reception, lobby and restaurant are situated on the ground floor. Group therapy rooms and crisis services are also located here. Consultation rooms are on the first floor. By doing this, there is an integration of the therapy and the surroundings. The living part is on the four upper floors, with a different unit on each floor. The patients needing the most supervision stay in the closed unit on the second floor. The patients needing the least supervision stay on the fifth floor, consisting mostly of bedrooms for follow-up treatment, where the need for supervision is very low. Each unit has access to its own private roof-terrace.

Eikenboom
Eikenboom
Eikenboom is a convalescent centre for patients with psychosomatic conditions. VMX Architects studied different options to house this centre at the Zeist Sanatorium. These studies showed that only one of the existing buildings was suited, but it was too small to accommodate all functions. An addition to this building has therefore been designed. The new building is located on the edge of the Zeist Sanatorium in a forest setting. In order to minimise the impact of the building on its surrounding a circular pavilion was designed.
Patients spend long periods of the day resting in bed. The patient bedrooms are therefore located on the outer perimeter of the building. The toroidal, or ‘doughnut’ shape of the building allows all of the rooms to have a view to the forest. Staff rooms and storage spaces are arranged on the inner circle, facing a private courtyard. This arrangement minimises circulation spaces and staff/patient distances. Both ends of the corridor terminate in the living room on the southern side of the building. A glazed link connects it to the existing hospital building, which will be renovated as part of the works, and will contain administration and therapy rooms. The structure of the pavilion is a clear spanning arched portal frame. This industrial method is very economical and permits a high degree of internal flexibility, as there are no internal supports.

Bureauhistorie.
Office History. The office was established after winning Europan 3, Den Bosch, 1994. Various projects have been worked on since that time. These projects vary from the design of a housing complex to the design of a temporary bicycle storage, and from a new V.I.P Airport Terminal to the design of large, complex public buildings, hospitals, offices and schools.
Bureaustructuur.
Office Structure. VMX Architects consists of two partners: Don Murphy and Leon Teunissen. Don Murphy was one of the first graduates of the Berlage Institute. He is responsible for the architectural position of the office. Leon Teunissen graduated at TU Delft in both Architecture and Building Management. He is responsible for the management of projects and the office as a whole. At this moment the office is consciously limited to 15 employees and a number of trainees. This enables the partners to give optimum attention to all projects. Employees of the office are both Dutch and non-Dutch. The differences in culture, education and technical experience is used to question and research Dutch building traditions. Apart from the secretary, all employees are highly trained architects. The occasional technician is also employed.
Projectorganisatie.
Project Organisation. VMX have formed a team that can handle the complete design process unlike many architectural practices. The subcommissioning of so called standard architectural jobs does not take place. In principal the entire design and drawing work is executed by the office itself. This approach can be recognised as effective in the realised projects of VMX. Projects are executed by a specially created team within the office. Next to Don Murphy and Leon Teunissen each team consists of at least two full time employees, at least one of which is experienced in design and execution at all levels. From the start of each project VMX works intensively with external advisors. The goal of VMX is to find new architectural solutions while also meeting the wishes of all parties involved.
