Dierenwelzijn
Why is animal welfare important in tourism? Many destinations offer customers the opportunity to view or interact with animals – up to 60% of total available excursions in some destinations They are popular choices with consumers, but customers want assurance that welfare standards are good. In 2012, research by the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) found: 52% of consumers would be put visiting a country again if they saw an animal being mistreated 22% had seen animals being mistreated abroad Bad practice exists in destinations and scrutiny of tourism businesses in increasing
Animal welfare standard (ABTA) Standards for animal welfare can vary drastically from one country to the next Global standards for best practice did not exist The tourism industry needs to be achieving best practice in this area By establishing minimum requirements and the industry working collectively towards these, we can make much needed progress ABTA guidance was developed in partnership with expert organisations all around the world
What the Global Welfare Guidance includes Introduces animal welfare in tourism Sets out the minimum requirements for all attractions featuring animals Introduces practices which are unacceptable or to be discouraged Explains additional best practices
Intended use of guidance • Designed for ABTA members to distribute to animal attraction suppliers • Suppliers should be strongly encouraged to meet the minimum requirements Suppliers should be encouraged to achieve the additional best practice requirements • Some tour operators will be developing processes to check suppliers comply
Dierenwelzijn Modules
