Editorial X2004: What's in a name?

Van 16-18 þni2004 werd het prestigieuze internationale congres "X20O4-Exposure Assessment in a Changing Environment" gehouden in het Educatorium van de Universiteit van Utrecht. De organisatie was in handen van het IRAS (Hans IGomhouc, Dick Heederik) met medewerking van TNO Chemie (Joop van Hemmen), de Erasmus Universiteit (Lex Burdorf) en de NVvA (Ton Spee, Pieter Ruigewaard, Peter van Balen). Hec congres telde in totaal 275 deelnemers uit 29 landen, waarvan helaas slechts 75 afkomstig waren uit hec ledenbestand van de NVvA' Met name de prakriserende arbeidshygiëniscen waten met slechrs 25 individuen meger vertegenwoordigd. De praktiserende arbeidshygiënisten' die ondanks de donkere wolken boven de professie wel aanwezig waren, konden hun geluk niet op getuige onder andere de volgende per E-mail geuite lo[uiting: "Ik vond het overigens zeer de moeire waard en heb er spijt van dat ik niet meerdere dagen ben gekomen!"'
De historie van de X-congressen is kort' Pas in 2001 werd her voorlaatste "Exposure" congres in Götenborg "X2001" gedoopt. Daarvoor wâs er geen vaste ticel voor het congres àat incidenteel door wisselende groePen werd georganiseerd' De ee¡ste internationale workshop waarin bloocstellingkarakterisering (toch een mooi Nederlands equivalent voor "Exposure Assessment") tot centraal thema werd verheven' werd nog geen rwintig jaar geleden om precies te zijn in 1988, gehouden in Woods Hole Massachusetts in de Verenigde Staten. Sponsoring was afkomstig van het National Cancer Inscitute (NCI), het National Instituce oF Occupational SaÊery and Health (NIOSH), de United Auto \Øorkers

Environmeotal Healch Sciences' Onder de titel "Exposure Assessmenc for Epidemiolo gy and Hazard Con trol" verschee n enkele jaren later een boek over deze conferentie

drage te noteren, die werd gepresenteerd door Jan Boleij (Heederik et al. 1991). Op deze conlerentie werd ook verslag gedaan van een Europese Concerced Action gericht op karakterisering van historische blootstelling voor epidemiologische doeleinden (Hémon et al. 1991).

Helaas bleek de drempel voor velen desondanks te hoog. Desalniettemin was de Nederlandse inbreng groot, niec in de laatste plaars door jonge onderzoekers uit Nederland. Echter ook de rweede generatie Nederlandse "exposure assessors" veelal werkzaam in het bui-
