Metodický pokyn
Prezentace je určena pro žáky SOU. Prezentaci lze použít pro žáky čtyřletých maturitních oborů v rámci probíraného tématu: My Town. Cílem tohoto celku bylo seznámit žáky s významnými městy Pardubického kraje, odkud pochází. Celek byl doplněn o 3 města, která nejsou z pardubického kraje, ale pro maturitní zkoušku je jejich znalost zásadní. Každá prezentace obsahuje interaktivní část, kde si student může ověřit svoji znalost kliknutím na obrázek konkrétní architektonické památky.

Location:
London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It is the largest city in the UK and in the European Union as well. It has about 8 million inhabitants. It is situated on the river Thames. It is the financial, economical, political and cultural centre of the country. Its history goes back to the Romans who founded a huge city called Londinium here around 43 AD, so it is almost 2.000 years old. When somebody referes to the City of London, you should know that he is talking about the ancient core of London right in the centre of today‘s London.
Some important sights:
The Tower is one of the oldest building in London, situated in the City of London. It was built in the 11th century as a royal palace, than it was a prison and now it is a musem where the crown jewels are kept. They are guarded by Beefeaters in their traditional uniforms. Not far from the Tower you can find the Tower Bridge, which was built only in the last century. The bridge can be opened in the middle so that the large ships can go through. In the past steam was used to open the bridge, nowadays electricity is used, of course. Saint Paul‘s Cathedral built by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century has a distinctive baroque design. The cathedral survived although it was bombed twice during the second World War. The Cathedral is also famous for its Whispering Gallery.
Some important sights:
Trafalgar Square is situated in the City of Westminster. The square was named after Admiral Nelson‘s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. His statue stands here to commemorate the victory. The square with 2 fountains is a popular place for tourists. The National Gallery is in Trafalgar Square and it houses a collection of grat paintings by european and british artists and also some interesting sculptures. The British Musem is the largest museum in the world. It owns items from all over the world and its library is also the largest in the world. Picadilly is a well known road in London running from Hyde Park Corner to Picadilly Circus. It is one of the shopping centres and it is dominated by a column with a statue of Eros on the top. Picadilly Circus is an important road junction quite popular with tourists and Hyde Park is the most famous and the largest park in London with a big lake and the Speaker‘s corner, where anyone can say what he wants.
