But I want to present you with a great, and moreover socially valued, career path available to us: To become a famous scholar of religion! Make sure that in the future people will organise conferences in honour of the centenary of your magnum opus. Have them discuss the reception history of your work and argue over the question whether Charles Taylor or Tariq Ramadan used your key concepts in a way that was true to your legacy. In order to draw attention to your research and quickly rise to the status of a First-Class scholar, take note of the following tips: Invent your own word and make this the centre of your argument. Quote from your own work. Be sure to include a counter-intuitive conclusion. Your list of references should AT LEAST be 30% of the length of your entire article. OR, make extensive use of footnotes so that they take up more than half of each page. Keep the name-dropping ratio above 5 per page. Make an appearance at conferences by keeping your hair wild and grey (dyed) and offer some ferocious comments after EACH speaker’s presentation. Use a paradoxical statement as title of your book or article. OR, use a title that has hardly anything to do with the content (maybe it is better to wait with this until you have made a name for yourself). Use plenty of quotes in Greek, Latin, French, Arabic, or German but NEVER translate them. Quote forthcoming work from other famous authors (or yourself). Make your abstract as unreadable as possible by using a lot of idiosyncratic jargon so you don’t give away the clue of your article and keep readers keen. This can be tricky, but don’t shy away from making a sweeping claim every once in a while, even though it is not really backed up by any valid data or argumentation. This will keep the reading exciting and people will love you for it. After all, even scholars need some excitement.

Even a student of religion can use some well meant advice in the form of the familiar ‘HOW TO’-section. In these days of crisis when concerns revolve mostly around the economy, the Humanities department is hit hard. As unemployment around us is rife the prospects for a student of religion may seem gloomy.

Iqbals inspanningen zijn een poging “... to preserve what's natural around us, to value resources from wherever they are sourced and to improve the quality of life for others.”5 Opvallend is het 'hippe' gehalte van deze blog.
Your average and charming citizen, he works for the Miami Police Department by day and is active as a serial killer by night. This is the story of the Showtime series Dexter which is as controversial as it is successful.
It has generated fierce opposition from the Parents Television Council, an important U.S. tv-watchdog organisation, who claimed that audiences are “in a disturbingly queasy way rooting for a mass murderer to kill somebody.”1 The series is also connected to two separate murder cases in which the convicted murderers are big fans of Dexter and claimed a resemblance to the main character. But many viewers are simply enamoured by the witty and thought provoking character Dexter Morgan, whose sinister double life has kept audiences eagerly watching for seven years.

The ways in which masculinity are represented in Dexter are two-sided. Protagonist Dexter Morgan starts out as a bachelor but when his relationship with Rita becomes serious, and the couple marry and have a son, he tries to be a good husband and father for his son and Rita’s children from a previous marriage. The voice-over tells us that despite his general lack of emotions, he cares a great deal for his family and wants to protect them from harm. But despite this Dexter cannot stop his nightly stalking and killing sessions; in fact this is always his priority even though it jeopardizes his family. The highest law Dexter lives by is ‘the code’ which his father transmitted to him. This code is in the first place concerned with Dexter’s survival, and according to the talkative ghost of his late father, having a family is an obstacle to following the code properly. The violence that Dexter unleashes on his victims in every episode is legitimated by his tragic past, and by ‘the code’ which only allows him to kill murderers. Significantly Dexter’s violent behaviour is presented as inevitable, something that cannot be contained but merely channelled. It has been suggested that because of this, Dexter advocates a patriarchal view of masculinity which prioritizes values of survival, selfishness, individualism, and aggression.2 The legitimization of violence which runs like a red thread through the series has also been connected to the support of the NeoConservative agenda of the U.S.A. post 9/11. A story about vigilante justice such as Dexter, is an
Next to these patriarchal and conservative ideas, some of the core themes of Dexter like ethics and the problem of evil are traditionally religious themes. The fifth season presents us with the Christian theme of redemption that determines the narrative. In the New Testament redemption mostly refers to Christ’s death on the cross to redeem us from our sins and thus secure our access to heaven in the afterlife. The blood of Christ is the price for our redemption. Redemption presupposes that we need to be redeemed from something, and that we can be redeemed, so it carries within it the notion of hope. Dexter’s greatest sin at the start of season five is that he is indirectly responsible for the murder of his wife Rita and he is guilt ridden because of this. Dexter believes that his presence is a curse to those around him and that it can never be otherwise. Thus he resolves that it is best not to get close to anyone again despite his loneliness and the longing for someone to share his true self with. At this point Lumen is brought into the narrative to redeem Dexter from his guilt and offer him hope. She is a Christ-figure in the sense that she is introduced as a symbol of human

effective way to show the difference between good and bad violence, a distinction urgently needed in the light of the publicly exposed war excesses of the U.S. Dexter does not challenge moral ideals like other anti-heroes, but instead reinforces a conservative morality based on a clear line between good and bad. The people Dexter kills represent evil, and because he directs his violence at evil Dexter ends up doing a good thing. The forte of anti-heroes is that they are like us with respect to their flawed human nature, and so force us to look at ourselves and the blurriness of our own morality. But Dexter is clearly represented as different from us by virtue of his childhood, the absence of emotions, and his cravings, so when we look at him we need not question ourselves.3

What you probably did not know is that Dexter espouses more traditional values than its controversial appearance makes us believe. It has been argued that the series subscribes to patriarchal values and supports American Neo-Conservatism. I have also found that the Christian theme of redemption drives the narrative of the fifth season. Disguised as innovative television Dexter reaffirms traditional ideas on gender, politics, and religion.

I hope that the above can function as an example of a phenomenon that is inherent to most popular series or films. Any product of culture is a site of contest between the established ideas of a society and ideas that subvert these. In the case of Dexter I think that the patriarchal, Neo-Conservative, and Christian values promote the typical dominant ideas of American culture. But this, in my opinion, does

Even while the history of the Shi‘a religion may suggest a strong tendency to centralize clerical authority in the marjaiyya, we could hardly speak of unity between clerics as diverse as Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei or al-Sistani, the guardian of the Najaf hawza (collection religious schools) in Iraq.

In this article I will set out two contrasting developments in the Shi‘a world, namely the transnationalization of Iraqi clerical networks against the backdrop of a further embeddedness of clerics in national political struggles. By discussing this central divide in clerical authority I hope to show that accounts of an ontological divide in the Middle East between Shi‘ism and Sunnism in discussing the aftermath of the Iraq invasion, an Axis of Resistance between Hizbollah, Syria, and Iran, the dreadful Syrian civil war, or a possible Saudi-Iranian cold war, fail to understand the crucial issue at
stake.2 Rather than assuming unity, we should look at the divisions within Shi‘a religious leadership itself as they will determine a great part of the future relationships in the Middle East. The Shi‘a clerical class has remained more independent and autonomous than their Sunni equivalents as a result of specific theological doctrines, financial contributions, and territorial space.3 Especially since the rise to prominence of the Iraqi Shrine cities of Najaf, Karbala, and Samarra after the sacking of Esfahan in 1722 have Shi‘a clerics managed to regain their independence from local political quarries. This clustering in a relatively small amount of cities and the informal process of leadership formation4 led to a centralization of religious authority into a few qualified scholars representing diverse communities from Lebanon to Northern India.5

The process of redemption is also reversed: While Lumen’s suffering is the price for Dexter’s redemption, losing Lumen is the price that Dexter pays for redeeming her. When she tells him that she is leaving because she is now free from her urge to kill thanks to Dexter’s help, Dexter tells her: “Don’t be sorry your darkness is gone. I’ll carry it for you, always. I’ll keep it with mine.”(5:12) In a Christ-like way he takes her sins upon himself and lets her go. Despite this less than happy ending the presence of Lumen also redeemed Dexter by giving him hope by proving that even a person’s dark urges are not cast in stone. But Dexter’s final thoughts of the season show that the real redemption was achieved simply by finding in Lumen a witness to his true identity: “While she was here she made me think for the briefest moment I might even have a chance to be human.” (5:12)

powerlessness, she is sick, dirty, half-naked, and covered with wounds. She has suffered a great amount, being locked up, abused and raped by several men for weeks. Her name, Lumen Pierce is a reference to piercing light and to Lumen Christi: the light of Christ. Dexter resolves to help her to avenge herself by killing all the men who have raped her. It is clear that by helping her he also helps himself to make up for Rita’s death. As the two embark on a killing spree, Dexter teaches Lumen the tricks of the trade until she is able to kill the men herself. She is the first person he has shared this part of his life with and their closeness eventually turns into a love affair.
Although in the beginning these networks where tied to exiled Islamist dissidents from Iraq, a shift has occurred whereby the Islamist parties have taken up local political causes, while the marjaiyya remained a-political. However, the embedding of their networks with these exiled politically active refugees did not seem to harm the continued growth of Shi‘a transnationalism as the support for a marja in religious affairs does not prohibit an individual to search for political guidance elsewhere. Beyond the already quietist nature of al-Khoe’i,
But, whereas these marja’s could lean on traditional legitimacy of their religious education, new competition has arisen. Without ignoring the important political guidance of marja’s in historic events like Tobacco Revolt (1899), Iranian Constitutional Revolution (1905-1907), Iraqi Uprising against British Occupation (1920), or in post-Saddam Iraq, I believe the usage of political activities to boost up lacking religious legitimacy is a rather new phenomena as political active clerics before, like Khomeini and Baqir al-Sadr derived their leadership initially from their traditional scholarship. Scholars like Fadhallah (d. 2012), Muqtada al-Sadr, Isa Qassem, and Khamenei remain disputed among the Grand Ayatollah ranks. Their role in national politics, the late Fadhallah being the patron of Hizbullah, Qassem of the Wefaq Party in Bahrain, al-Sadr the leader of the Sadr Movement in Iraq, and Khamenei as Supreme Leader of Iran, increases their perceived religious legitimacy even when they may have not achieved the rank of Ayatollah.8 While alSistani continues to remain the foremost marja, the connection between a cleric’s authority and success of Shi‘a political experiences in national contexts seems to have the potential to transform the clerical establishment permanently. Especially the Iranian experiment of Khomeini, drastically improved and enhanced by Khamenei, might have such a disruptive effect on clerical authority that it led Khalaji to proclaim the possibility of al-Sistani as the last true marja in the modern world.9 The Iranian Revolution marked the beginning of the complete overhaul of clerical authority in Iran whereby their independency and autonomy have been destroyed. The state has come to
N OT ORI OUS
As a consequence of this co-option the Iranian clergy has become the richest Shi‘a in history distorting the traditional follower-dependent basis of financial income. The consolidation of Khamenei’s power base among clerics and the military, funded by oil rents, has given the Iranian regime the capability to widen its influence in clerical politics. Important clerics like al-Sistani and Fadhallah always remained stench opponents of the role of the clergy in Iranian politics and early supporters like Baqir al-Hakim (d. 2003) or Montazeri (d. 2009) moved to a more critical stance towards Iran’s Supreme Leadership, instead supporting pluralism and political reforms. The transnationalization of the Najaf hawza might have extended their financial reach and formed an interdependent network of Shi‘a communities, but contrasted with the financial capabilities and power of clerics involved in national politics the future course of clerical authority remains shaky at best. As al-Sistani is coming of age (b.1930) and seems to be gravely ill with no apparent successor, competition is on the rise to the leadership of Najaf and the first Tehran-backed candidate has made his entry.12 It remains the question how Iran might influence the private choice of individuals to follow a marja, but so far Iranian backed candidates seem to be bankrolled by the state bureaucracy and outbidding alternative leadership. Al-Maliki, the Prime Minister of Iraq, has already hinted favorably towards an
Iranian-backed candidate mixing religion with politics against the non-interventionist stance of al-Sistani, possibly endangering his own legitimacy base in Bagdad as it remains loyal to al-Sistani.

play a central role distributing and controlling education, influence and financial support among clerics and managed to form some sense of hierarchy by appointing clerics to influential government posts.10 The destruction of the autonomy of the clergy, statization of their networks and full politization of the velayat-e faqih doctrine seems to be strengthening Khamenei’s power base as he possessed neither the charisma nor religious legitimacy of Khomeini at the time of his troubled succession.11

What separates the Najaf hawza in the era of alKhoe‘i (d.1992), and al-Sistani as his successor, is the explicit global approach of the clerical establishment and their remarkable success in linking old Shi‘a communities with new groups of labour migrants and exiled dissidents in the Gulf countries to new centers in London and Dearborn, Detroit.6 Al-Sistani, of which Khalaji suggests 80% of the Shi‘a may follow his religious rulings,7 managed to succeed and further expand Khoe‘i’s efforts into the biggest communication network in the Shi‘a world linking websites in multiple languages, book distribution, mosques, and social security programmes.
al-Sistani and other from Najaf, the move towards de-politicized transnationalism has made further advance as the al-Shirazi and al-Hakim family detached themselves from direct Iranian patronage in the wake of the Iraq invasion.

As a consequence of state repression of clerical networks in both Iraq and Iran after a period of heightened political involvement in the 1950s and 1960s, like the conceptualization of Khomeini’s (d.1989) velayat-e faqih and Baqir al-Sadr’s (d.1980) guidance of the Da‘wa party, clerics have opted for different options of relief and conservation of their influence. While some clerics continued to use their networks for political gain in a more national context, like Khomeini in Iran, al-Sadr in Iraq, and Musa Sadr in Lebanon, others managed to spread their religious influence far beyond traditional communities and paved the way for what can be seen as an upgrade to truly transnational networks detached from the desperate situations in the Iraqi shrine cities.

Al eerder vroeg Descartes zich af of niet wellicht alle kennis door God ingegeven is: “Is there not, after all, some God, or whatever he should be called, that puts these thoughts into my mind?”5 Hoewel God niet verantwoordelijk is voor bijvoorbeeld alle herinneringen die de mens heeft, is wel duidelijk dat God nooit foutieve kennis in zou geven; God is immers een volmaakt en oppermachtig wezen.

New Age-schrijvers verhalen over spirituele transformatie en verlichting.
Dear readers, Welcome to the Western Esotericism section of Notorious, a section that the regular reader will notice has never before appeared in this magazine. Let me use this editorial to explain why you find it in this issue, and what it contains.
Just as in the alchemical process of solution and coagulation—expressed in the Latin phrase solve et coagula—I believe that it is important for Hermet to continue the transformation that started with De Hermet. The magazine has now dissolved, but from its ashes this section has been created, a new platform for students of Western Esotericism to publish essays, reviews, and articles related to one of the most fascinating fields in the study of western culture. It is my hope that this section will not only provide a platform for students to train their skills in popular and academic writing, but also that it can act as an arena where interests, knowledge, and inspiration can be shared.
ED I T OR IA L
Let me start with a brief bit of history. In 2010, Joyce Stoffelsma and a group of ambitious esotericism students founded De Hermet, a student magazine devoted to the study of Western Esotericism. This magazine was originally in Dutch, but for the second issue it was transformed into English and given the anglicised name Hermet. The reason for this was to ‘participate in the lingua franca of the study [of Western Esotericism],’ but also to ‘reach out to our international friends.’1 The magazine was published twice a year until Spring 2012 when Joyce announced her resignation as the editor-in-chief of the magazine, and I took on the role of editor.
Sincerely, Jimmy Elwing

It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy the articles found in this section. It moves from magical names in the Renaissance magus Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s magnum opus, to theories of music and how they harmonise with the spheres, and ends with a review of Jeffrey Kripal’s Mutants and Mystics, which deals with esotericism, science fiction, and comic books. I hope that this issue can show the diversity of this fascinating, relevant, and highly important, field of study.

In my contribution to the last issue of Hermet, I compared the power of Hebrew versus other languages in Agrippa’s ideas of performing magic. I concluded that Agrippa believed any language can be effective in magic, as long as it is performed by a magician with a “pure mind,” although Agrippa reserves a special status for Hebrew. But there is more to language than the choice of what language to use. When studying Agrippa, a broad definition of language will help us understanding the role he has in mind for it. In this article the term ‘language’ includes names, numbers, sigils, and symbols. The focus of this article will be on the names of spirits and ways to find them out, as explained by Agrippa in De Occulta Philosophia.
Agrippa attempted to develop a method to become one with God. It is based on the summoning of spirits that could help the magician elevate his soul. The more virtuous a magician is, the higher spirits he can invoke, and with every spiritual contact, the magician becomes more elevated until he can finally unite with God himself.1 One of the most important aspects of De Occulta Philosophia is finding out the names to use when summoning spirits. A name, Agrippa explains, can have a double link to the named: Adam named the creatures according to the celestial influences acting upon them, and according to their natural properties. This gives them a double virtue: “Every voice

The Hebrew mecubals knew how to find angelic names in Scripture.5 Agrippa also teaches us about finding names in the tables of the seventy-two angels that bear the name of God. These are derived from Psalms 109:6, a verse consisting of three lines each containing seventy-two letters. The combinations hereof, with the ending –el or – iah, constitute the names of angels. Those angels are set over the seventy-two “celestial quinaries, nations, and tongues, and joints of man’s body, and cooperate with the seventy-two seniors of the synagogue, and so many disciples of Christ.”6 Names may also be constructed from the disposition of heavenly bodies, but this is a very complex method. The magician looks at the astrological disposition that is most fit for the purpose of the ritual, and then translates the stars that are in the right position into the Hebrew characters corresponding to these constellations. The letters are combined into a name, and –el or – iah is added.7 The next method discussed by Agrippa is ‘calculatory.’ The names are calculated with a table. In the upper and lower horizontal row are the signs of the planets, and in the right vertical row the Hebrew alphabet, which is reversed
Finally, sometimes spirits are called after their office. There are two kinds of these names: first, the names that are derived from the works of the angels, for example the five angels that diffuse the divine attributes into the lower realms: “[N]ames are for the most part put upon them from their works, signifying some sort of office, or effect, which is required by the quire of spirits.”10 Second, the names that can be derived from “those things, which they are set over, their names being as it were borrowed from the stars, or men, or places, or times, or such like things, the divine name being added at the end.”11 The difference is not very clear, but in the first example the name comes from the spirit’s function; Raphael means “Medicine of God” and is the angel of healing. In the second case the name derives from the things that the spirit rules over. Although Lehrich states that “[n]ames have a singular referent - a demonic name refers to only one single demon,”12 in the course of the years that went by between the first manuscript and the final edition of De Occulta Philosophia, some people may have called attention to the fact that sometimes, by using

in the left column. The upper and right side are the lines of the good, the left and bottom are the lines of evil. This table can be used for converting any name into the name of a planetary being. This can be a ‘genius’ (the ‘good’ planetary spirit) or an angel of any rank in the angelical hierarchy.8 Another table applies the same system, but now with the twelve zodiac signs instead of the seven planets. With this table you can ‘calculate’ the name of the spirits connected to the signs of the zodiac. Here too an affix is added: El, On, Jah or Jod for good angels, and El for both good and evil spirits: “[T]he name El, because it imports power, and virtue, is therefore added not only to good but bad spirits, for neither can evil spirits either subsist, or do anything without the virtue of El, God.”9

therefore that is significative, first of all signifies by the influence of the celestial harmony; secondly, by the imposition of man, although oftentimes otherwise by this, then by that. But when both significations meet in any voice or name ... then that name is with a double virtue ... made most efficacious to act...”2 Thus names signify in two ways. Agrippa writes that the names of spirits are known only to God, and that by divine revelation God can make them known to man, or a name can be imposed upon the demon by a person who has authority to do so.3 Although those names cannot be pronounced,4 this does not mean that they cannot be used in magic. On the contrary, they will be very powerful. It only means that these names, if they are being used, should be written down.

So, there are several methods for finding out names of spirits. However, there is even more to language in Agrippa’s work. In the next issue I will have an article that deals with other language forms in Agrippa's writings.

Another problem with these methods is that sometimes it will get you names that seem to make no sense, even if they are pronounceable. However, Pico thought that names that could not be understood are the only names that can be effective in magic. Agrippa takes a less extreme position. These names are still very powerful in magic, and sometimes even more than names that can be understood: “And these names ... may do more by the secret of the chiefest philosophy in a magical work, than significative names, whilst the mind being astonished at the obscurity of them, and deeply intent, firmly believing that something divine is under it, doth reverently pronounce these words, and names, although not understood, to the glory of God, captivating himself with a spiritual affection of piety, in the obedience of him.”15
HARMONY OF THE SPHERES
Did you ever wonder, whether music and astrology are related, or why music seems to play such a significant role in religions? In this article you will be introduced to the concept of the ‘harmony of the spheres’ and how this concept changed over time, often parallel to major changes in science and religion.
For this endeavor to succeed a short introduction to the concept itself is needed. However, its close relation to musical theory can be an obstacle, therefore these particular aspects will be explained rather simplistically. We will move from ancient Greece and their perception of the cosmos, numbers and music, towards a more scientific rebirth of the concept in the renaissance and the inevitable ending of this beautiful theory in modern times.

these methods, they arrived at the same names for different spirits. Agrippa explains this issue with an example from the Bible: sometimes the serpent represents Christ, and sometimes the devil.13 What spirit will respond to the calling of the name depends on the intention of the magician: “[T]he very ardent intention of the invocator, by which our intellect is joined to the separated intelligences, causeth that we have sometimes one spirit, sometimes another, although called upon under the same name, made obsequious to us.”14
This universe, being in perfect harmony, was believed to be guided by mathematical rules that were similar to the rules that constituted the harmony of music. The conclusion that music is therefore a very high entity itself was easily drawn and functioned as an explanation for the effect that music can have on the soul. To understand this connection one also has to understand the numbers behind the musical harmony. Although this knowledge is believed to be much older, the discovery of those mathematical proportions is often attributed to Pythagoras. For that reason this philosopher shall be our point of departure. The story goes: One day Pythagoras passed the workshop of a blacksmith and realized that there was a relation between the size of the hammers and the sound he heard when the hammer hit the anvil. He hurried to his own workshop to do some further experimenting and found out that when the length of a string is doubled, but the tension on the string remains the same, the difference between the tones produced would be exactly an octave. Keeping the length of the string the same, but doubling the tension gave the same result. He did the same experiment with different ratios resulting in different intervals. 1:2 was the octave, 2:3 a fourth, 3:4 a fifth and so on till a ratio of respectively 24:25 producing an interval of a half tone. Although a background in musical theory would come in handy for an understanding of
Consonance is the manner in which two tones combined are pleasant to listen to. Even though aesthetics play a small role in what is considered to be an ideal combination of tones, it is mainly guided by the laws of physics and is therefore fairly universal. The simpler the ratio, the more consonant the sound. The octave with its ratio of 1:2 sounds very harmonically and in fact produces the same tone only higher in the spectrum of sound. A difference of a half tone with the ratio of 24:25 does not sound consonant at all. To get an idea of such absence of harmony one can imagine the squealing kind of sound you would hear at scary moments in horror movies. Taking into account the notion of a balanced harmonic universe, the importance of the first three intervals becomes clear. Especially in relation to the tetraktys (figure 1), which by the Pythagoreans of ancient Greece was considered to be a holy figure comprising the very essence of existence.
The numbers one to four are seen in this figure as well as in the ratios of the three most harmonic intervals. The one stands for the monad, which is God, the highest of all concepts. It symbolizes unity and is seen as a masculine force. From unity, duality was born. Now we deal with two opposites, which as in the yin/yang principle form a single concept. This feminine force symbolizes good and evil, energy and matter and all kinds of binary oppo-

sitions one can think of. Combined, the monad and the dyad form the triad, which unifies the dualities and is therefore believed to be another sacred number. The number four, or tetrad, is associated with the four elements as well as the four seasons.
producing a sound that could only be heard by the most elevated spirits. However, to have an effect on the human soul it was not necessary to hear the sound. Like in astrology the forces at work where unperceivable by the average person but had their effect nonetheless.
BL Z. 41
the intervals, a short introduction to the concept of consonance will be enough for now.
Plato used this idea in his Politeia to explain why certain musical scales should be discarded as diabolic. After all, if the cosmic spheres produced such a perfect harmony, the music produced on earth should be in balance with the sound of the cosmos. Rather peculiar is the fact that we don’t know what these particular scales sounded like. Sometimes a certain scale is mentioned to be good by Plato, but happens to create chaos during Pythagoras’ lifetime. As far as musical scales are concerned it looks as if good and bad are arbitrary.
From there on it emanates further into our world of existence. The tetraktys not only reminds us of this cosmogony but also symbolizes the three dimensional world. One is the first point in space. With the second point it forms a line, with the third a surface and with the fourth a pyramid, the simplest three-dimensional figure. So the numbers one to four are the most important numbers for the Pythagoreans, therefore the intervals resulting from those numbers are considered to be the most perfect. FROM THE HEAVENS, THROUGH THE SOUL, INTO THE INSTRUMENT What has all this to do with the heavens? The answer lies in how the universe was pictured in that time. The model of Pythagoras was geocentric, meaning that the earth was at the center of the universe. The sun, moon and planets circled around the earth within a crystal sphere (figure 2). The rolling of these giant objects caused the spheres to resonate,
Although the rules of musical conduct seem to be rather ambiguous, there is one idea that stands out. There are three kinds of music that are related to each other, perfectly illustrated by Boethius’ terms of: Musica Universalis being the harmony of the spheres; Musica Humana being the harmony within the human soul; and Musica Instrumentalis being ordinary music as produced on instruments.
H AR MO NY O F TH E S PH ER ES
The harmony of the spheres suggests that there is a certain correspondence between the activities in the heavens and those on earth. Man believed that inexplicable forces were bestowed upon them by the planets. Making sense of these workings often resulted in an anthropomorphic pantheon, where particular gods were identified with particular planets, all part of our vast universe.
The medieval philosopher Boethius came up with this system that, according to some, has a fourth kind of music: Musica Divina, being the music of the gods. In turn this concept had a great influence on the philosophy of the Sufi mystics. The many different branches of Sufism all seem to have a certain appreciation towards music as being a divine gift. For them it serves as a vehicle to elevate the soul to a higher realm. The main idea is that the harmony of the soul can be adjusted by music coming in from the exterior, causing the soul to resonate in harmony with the cosmos. This way the micro- and macrocosm function at the same level.

and consisted of all equal surfaces. Around these figures one could place a sphere, as well as within, and these spheres matched the orbits of the planets as one can see on the title page of Kepler’s Mysterium Cosmographicum (figure 4). He was convinced that the perfectness of the figures matched the perfectness of the universe and he held on to that model for the rest of his life, even after he himself proved that the orbits of the planets were in fact elliptical rather than a perfect circle.
Today an even more incoherent relation between music and our universe seems to be at hand. Modern quantum physics tell us that there is very little structure in our world of existence. Astronomers and physicists have
The crystal spheres were no longer seen as valid. Tycho Brahe had witnessed the passing of a huge comet of which he was able to calculate the distance. The comet was so close to earth that his conclusion was that if there were any crystal spheres, they sure would have been broken by now. In turn Kepler theorized that the cosmic harmony was produced by the planets moving through space, the frequency depending on the size and speed of the object. To elaborate further on this concept he had to figure out the pattern to which the universe was structured. While teaching in Euclidic geometry he draw a triangle within two circles (figure 3) and realized that the universe could be structured in a similar matter.
The distance between the two circles was in ratio with the distance between the orbits of Saturn and Jupiter. He took his theory to the third dimension and saw that there were exactly five perfect stereo metric figures already proven by Euclides, just enough to explain the distances between the planets. They are perfect because they are symmetrical
tone system of Arnold Schönberg transformed western music. This system had different rules creating endless possibilities, often resulting in music that takes an effort to listen to. In a way there is still a connection with the Pythagorean ideal, this time with an emphasis on the realm of numbers rather than the cosmos, since his music did not reflect a celestial harmony but explored the mathematical structure behind music.
All this beauty came to an abrupt end during the eighteenth century. Darwin proved that man and animal both evolved from the same ancestral species, which showed that humans were less special then they thought. The search for higher realms, through understanding the workings of the cosmos, slowly dulled down, especially after Sigmund Freud argued that the search itself was merely a strategy for man to exceed its own subjectivity. However, with his theory of relativity Einstein accomplished with ordinary science what people had tried to do by philosophical means for centuries, that is: creating order in the seemingly chaotic universe. In a way, the cosmos lost its romantic touch due to this hard science, which happens to coincide with the dawning of atonal music. The twelve-

theoretically posited the existence of dark matter of which the amount varies in different parts of the universe, causing some parts to be more “spacious” than other parts. Imagine what the music would sound like if composed in accordance with these modern ideas. Would you still call that music? Of course there are no fixed boundaries of what is music and what is not are rather ambiguous, but considering that for most of us it has to be pleasant to listen to, it would be a hard task. Over time the relation between music and our worldview has become less and less. Although it does not make music in general a less enjoyable phenomenon it no longer serves the role it held in the ancient world.e

In antiquity the model for the universe was geocentric but due to the Copernican shift during the Renaissance it changed to a heliocentric model, meaning that the sun was the center of the universe. One can imagine the effect this had on the theories of the harmony of the spheres. Johannes Kepler did a great deal of work to fit the new model of the cosmos with the theory of cosmic harmony, resulting in new form of astrology all together.

MODERN AND POSTMODERN PERSPECTIVE
G : K >: L 7 N 6 G : C G DJ @ : B 6
Kripal identifies seven ‘mythemes’ (a concatenation of “myth” and “meme”) that comprise a ‘Super-Story’ that lies “at the base of a vast array of American popular culture” (26). The first two mythemes are perennial in Western culture. ‘Divinization’, or ‘Demonization’, describes the frequent depiction of super-beings, such as angels and demons, that transcend the material realm and can be controlled through magic, ritual, or supplication. The Western religious imagination has also frequently resorted to ‘Orientation’, the second mytheme, which mystifies the sacred by placing its source in more exotic locations, such as the Far East, or mythical worlds such as Atlantis and Lemuria.

Jeffrey Kripal believes that it has been too easy to miss the important role played by comic books and Science Fiction (SF) in the history of ideas, particularly in their treatment of the paranormal. In Mutants and Mystics, Kripal, holder of the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, seeks to refocus our attention on the kaleidoscope of patterns of the paranormal in popular fiction. He combines academic analysis of comics and SF with a boyish excitement for superhero fiction and the passion of
a “working hunch” that there is “some sort of deep but still inarticulate connection between the paranormal and popular culture, between mystics and mutants” (26). Kripal believes that comic books and SF must be read with an increased awareness of the gnostic, esoteric and magical roots of the literature. His opening chapter portrays two comic book writers—Grant Morrison and Alan Moore—whose work cannot be properly encountered without knowledge of the esoteric

The next three chapters feature what Kripal identifies as a new chapter in orientation—the “relocation of the sacred” into even more exotic mythemes (27). The first of these, ‘Alienation’, exchanges angels for aliens. The gods are no longer on mountaintops or in amorphous heavens—they are in outer space and they are watching us. Meanwhile, in the mytheme of ‘Radiation’, the view of matter has changed from lifeless material to energy made manifest. The proof of this was provided by Albert Einstein, but Kripal looks past modern physics to older ideas of metaphysical energy, such as animal magnetism, that have morphed into modern conceptions of forces that are responsible for superpowers such as telepathy, heightened creativity, and telekinesis—concepts that pervade comic books and SF. The next mytheme, ‘Mutation’, builds on predictions for the future of human evolution, prevalent in Western culture since Darwin’s publication of The Origin of Species, but taken to especially fantastic heights in the 60’s with a surge in popularity in counter-cultural movements that posited the coming evolution
of human consciousness. Kripal shows that this period, in which American hippies began to refer to themselves as mutants in the process of evolution of consciousness, is the context for the introduction of the X-Men comic books series.

trends that shaped their work. The bulk of Mutants and Mystics is dedicated to providing a structural framework with which readers can approach such material.
Kripal’s final two mythemes describe authors of fantastic fiction who come to understand the paranormal as real and consciously write it into transcendent narratives of cosmic power and personal gnosis. ‘Realization’, the sixth mytheme, describes the first part of this process, in which an author or reader realizes that paranormal events reveal the world and ourselves as created by our own imaginations. The second aspect of this process is ‘Authorization’, in which we realize that the illusory nature of reality gives us power to write our own lives and define our own existence, that “the angels and aliens, gods and demons are us” (28, Kripal’s italics). Each mytheme is introduced in a separate chapter enlivened by a profuse assortment of writers, artists and editors of popular culture. Some SF writers and editors, such as John W. Campbell and Phillip K. Dick are featured, but most of Kripal’s attention is reserved for comic books, where it seems that virtually all the major writers and editors in the field, including Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Barry Windsor-Smith, had a deep interest in the paranormal. The final chapter applies the mythemes to a single case study of Whitley Streiber, an author and ufologist who has chronicled various encounters with transphysical beings at his cabin in upstate New York (a veritable drive-through alien abduction hotspot in popular culture) but acknowledges that his experience of these beings is likely formed entirely by his imagination, itself shaped by SF movies he watched as a child. “Every time you go to the movies,” says Streiber, “Your unconscious is convinced” (304).

MUTANTS & MYSTICS
Ultimately, however, this ambiguity is likely the result of one of the great positives of the book. Kripal allows no boundaries of possibility to constrain his work. He is always open-minded to the accounts of paranormal experiences that he describes. The respect he displays toward ideas that other academics might slide awkwardly into the insanity file, allows the reader unfettered access to the intensely variegated landscape occupied by the paranormal and its manifestations in popular culture. At times, Kripal even goes so far as to advocate for those whose ideas he feels haven’t been given proper credence: “Just how much of these men’s courage and honesty do we need to savage (or just politely ignore) in order to protect our little materialist worlds?” (291) This quote illustrates the potent mix of high quality academic scholarship, boundary-breaking philosophy, and personal spiritual expression that is Mutants and Mystics. This combination may be a hindrance to some forms of academic scholarship, but for all other purposes this fascinating blend makes for a powerful and entrancing depiction of a grand Super-Story that has been drawn onto the psychical canvas of artists and writers and communicated to us—the unwittingly participating audience.
At other times, Kripal retreats to a more secular position, describing the Super-Story as a rich mythical narrative that can “handle the full

This simplification is likely the result of an ambiguity regarding the reality of paranormal phenomena that pervades Mutants and Mystics. At times, Kripal seems to embrace popular culture’s encounter with the paranormal as a view into a higher, spiritual realm: “The fantastic, handled properly, might help us to realize the true nature of the real, which is fantastic” (38). In this view, paranormal manifestations such as alien beings and psychic powers are experienced through the cultural lens provided by imagination, but these imagined motifs refer to a paranormal power or spiritual essence that exists behind the webs of illusion spun by the mind.
cosmic potential of the species,” but which does not necessarily rely on the existence of imponderable supernatural agencies. Rather, the Super-Story, in this reading, is the only reality. Kripal almost resolves this ambiguity with his hypothesis that the Super-Story offers an alternative to the dichotomy between spiritual and material, but this middle ground is such unfamiliar terrain that it feels like Kripal himself often gets caught on one side or the other of a duality of matter and spirit.

Since there is not much similar research out there, Kripal’s insights on SF and comic book creators, as well as the esoteric groups and individuals that influenced them, are extremely valuable. Unfortunately, his descriptions of occult groups and philosophies are not always accurate. For example, Kripal exuberantly connects Rosicrucianism to Hollow Earth theory because Christian Rosencreuz, the mythical founding father of the movement, was entombed in an underground vault (42). He also calls Franz Anton Mesmer a “wizard-healer,” though Mesmer himself did not see any magical function in his theory of a naturalistic universal magnetic fluid (125). Kripal continues this trend by asserting that Mesmer’s animal magnetism merged seamlessly with Spiritualism, the Odic force of Baron von Reichenbach, and Wilhelm Reich’s Orgone in one contiguous attempt to spiritualize matter. Aside from the fact that these movements never achieved such unity, this simplification obscures a much more complex historical reality which has seen occult groups seek to naturalize paranormal phenomena as often as they attempt to spiritualize them.
