About the Master’s degree programme
3
1.
Utrecht University academic system
Utrecht University offers students academic programmes that enable self-directed learning. This means that, within specific parameters, students can determine much of the content of their own programme. Students following a Bachelor’s programme can choose a quarter of their programme from courses within their Major, but also from the courses offered by Utrecht University as a whole, and from those offered by other institutions, both nationally and internationally. Utrecht University follows the principle that both teaching staff and students have obligations with regard to their participation in a course. Teaching staff are responsible for enabling active learning, and students are responsible for actively participating in the course and assessments. Assessments take place at various points throughout the course. You can follow both a Bachelor’s degree programme and a Master’s degree programme at Utrecht University. A Bachelor’s degree programme lasts 3 years. The duration of a Master’s programme depends on the type of programme you choose. Academic Master’s programmes last one year, and research and educational Master’s programmes last two years. Bachelor’s degree programmes at Utrecht University aim to: • Enable students’ academic development • Study a specific field in depth • Prepare students for a further career or academic career. During a Bachelor’s degree programme at Utrecht University, considerable attention is paid to developing academic skills. You will learn to analyse, develop arguments, report and present information and opinions at a high level. You will record your developments and achievements in your personal electronic dossier, known as your portfolio. At the end of your Bachelor’s degree programme, your portfolio will provide you with a clear overview of the skills you have developed. Students who successfully complete a Bachelor’s degree programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), or Bachelor of Laws (LLB), depending on the programme they have followed. A degree awarded by the Faculty of Arts is, of course, a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In the Master’s degree programmes, graduates with a Bachelor’s degree go on to specialise in an academic or vocational subject at university level. Each Master’s programme has its own admissions procedure, but all students with a Bachelor’s degree from Utrecht University are guaranteed a place on at least one of Utrecht University’s Master’s degree programmes. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Master’s degree (MA). The Faculty of Arts offers more than 50 Master’s degree programmes. For more information about these, go to www.let.uu.nl/master.

Course programme
The OGC research MA’s The Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC) offers eight research Master of Arts (MA) programmes in the field of history and culture: • Art History of the Low Countries in its European Context • Gender and Ethnicity • History: Cities, States and Citizenship • Literary Studies: Literature in the Modern Age • Media Studies • Medieval Studies • Music Studies • Dutch Language and Literature All eight MA programmes are structured in the same way, comprising courses and tutorials for a total of 90 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) points, including the Fundamentals of the Humanities courses and the Research Design, and a Master’s thesis worth 30 ECTS points. Each programme combines disciplinary and interdisciplinary elements, allowing students to fully benefit from the broad range of topics covered by the OGC. Within each programme, students may choose courses that relate to their personal interests and ambitions. Students may also take some optional courses from other MA programmes for a limited number of credits. Procedures and standards are the same for all eight programmes. The research MA programmes prepare students to conduct independent academic research in their field of choice. Graduates of these programmes will be eligible for PhD programmes either in the Netherlands or abroad. They will also be qualified for careers in professions requiring academic expertise and advanced research skills (but not necessarily a PhD) in one of the fields in question. Students who have completed one of these programmes will have: • a thorough knowledge of the methodological and theoretical concepts in their field of expertise, enabling them to critically assess the value and practical usefulness of research findings; • up-to-date knowledge of the most current hermeneutical, empirical and theoretical developments in the field, enabling them to critically reflect on these and formulate proposals for academically and socially relevant research; • experience of using the most commonly used research methods, and an understanding of the advantages and limitations of these; • the ability to make a personal contribution to academically and socially relevant research and to report on this orally or in writing at an academic level and in an interdisciplinary context. In Year 2, students will follow research seminars and/or tutorials at an advanced level. They are strongly advised to complete a substantial part of their coursework in their second year outside Utrecht University’s Faculty of Arts, either abroad, at other Dutch universities that offer specialised research seminars in their field, or where appropriate, within programmes offered by the Netherlands Research Institutes.
2.1
General description
This MA programme offers students a thorough education in Dutch studies, an academic discipline that studies the Dutch language and literature from three perspectives: Dutch as a language system, Dutch as a system of use in communication, and Dutch as a literary system.
5
The comprehensive nature of Dutch studies is reflected in this programme through its five chairs in Dutch Linguistics, Medieval Dutch Literature, Early Modern Dutch Literature, Modern Dutch Literature and Dutch Language Use and Discourse Studies. It is further strengthened by the existence of a University Professor of Medieval Literary Studies. The disciplinary broadness of this programme is unique, both in the Netherlands and worldwide. No other research MA in Dutch Language and Literature currently offers students the possibility of combining literary, linguistic and communication perspectives at an advanced academic level. This broad expertise makes Utrecht a true centre for the study of Dutch language and literature. As the national language of the Netherlands, Dutch is studied within this programme from the perspective of its many different roles and functions in the Netherlands today and in the past. Students are therefore given the opportunity to specialise in one of the research subjects covered by the five chairs, or to take on a multi-perspective approach. To ensure all students study the Dutch language and literature from a sufficiently broad perspective, the State of the Art in Grondslagen van de Neerlandistiek course is compulsory, as is at least one of the multi-perspective research seminars. As a whole, the programme offers a broad overview of the field of Dutch studies and a thorough training in the theoretical and methodological issues in the disciplinary subfields, as well as encouraging an interdisciplinary approach.
2.2
Goals
Students following this programme will acquire fundamental knowledge of Dutch as a language system, a system of use in communication, and a literary system. Graduates will have: • a thorough knowledge of the methodological and theoretical concepts of Dutch language and literature from both historical and interdisciplinary perspectives, enabling them to critically assess the value and practical usefulness of research findings in this field; • up-to-date knowledge of the most current hermeneutic, empirical and theoretical developments in the field of Dutch language and literature, and the ability to critically reflect on these and to formulate proposals for academically and socially relevant research; • experience of the most commonly used research methods, including an understanding of their advantages and limitations, and the ability to assess the value of research findings; • the ability to make a personal contribution to academic and socially relevant research and to report on this orally and in writing at an academic level and in an interdisciplinary context.
2.3
Structure
The Master’s programme starts in September and February, and comprises a total of 120 ECTS, subdivided into two times four component parts. Each block students will take two courses, each worth 7,5 ECTS. The curriculum consists of the introductory course Fundamentals of the Humanities (7,5 ECTS), a disciplinary State of the Art course (7.5 ECTS), the Research Design seminar (7.5 ECTS), a Research Seminar (15 ECTS) or equivalent compulsory course, and three elective courses (7,5 ECTS each) in the first year, or an equivalent amount of individual work, tutored by one of the faculty professors. In the second year students will usually spend a semester abroad (30 ECTS in total) and write their Master’s thesis, supervised on an individual basis (30 ECTS). A student may opt to exchange one of these courses for another course, or an internship, subject to the approval of the Exam Board.
6
Structure of the MA programme Dutch Language and Literature 2005/2006 Year 1: 30 ECTS per semester Semester 1 Fundamentals of the Humanities Semester 2 State of the Art in Grondslagen Neerlandistiek Year 2: 30 ECTS per semester Semester 1 4 research seminars and/or tutorials Semester 2 MA thesis
3 research seminars and/or tutorials 2 research seminars and/or tutorials and thesis
Research design
In Year 2, students take research seminars and/or tutorials at an advanced level. They are strongly advised to complete a substantial part of their coursework in their second year outside the Faculty of Arts (see 3.1.6). For students who begin the programme in February, the order of the programme may be different.
2.4
Thesis
Students must complete the MA programme by writing an MA thesis that is based on independently conducted research, refers to relevant literature and contains a comparative element. The thesis must include a critical discussion of the findings of other research. The thesis must make a contribution to an academic debate and must be based on original research drawing on primary historical or contemporary sources. The questions covered by the thesis must be formulated in such a manner that they conform to the standards of international literature and contain a comparative element. The findings must be presented in a style that is appropriate to the field of art history. In short, the thesis should demonstrate that the student is able to generate new scholarly knowledge and insight and to share this insight with fellow researchers in a coherent way. It may be written in such a form that it supports the student’s research plans for a dissertation, and may also prepare the student for independent academic research in another context. Students will produce their thesis under the supervision of two experienced lecturer/researchers in the field of art history, one of whom will act as the primary supervisor. The process whereby the thesis is produced consists of the following phases: 1. First, the student examines the literature and source material (contemporary or historical, visual or textual) in order to write an initial thesis plan consisting of a formulation of the problem to be investigated, a description of the primary sources to be researched, and descriptions of the research method and the academic relevance of the research. 2. Once the supervisors have approved this plan, the student conducts an independent study of the literature and does research, regularly discussing findings with one of the supervisors. 3. On the basis of a draft chapter produced by the student, the supervisors assess formal requirements, such as the use of language and annotation and, if necessary, make agreements with the student about how these are to be improved. 4. The student then writes the MA thesis and delivers a complete version to the two supervisors, who recommend specific alterations and corrections, if required. 5. The student writes the final version of the thesis and submits three hard copies and one digital copy to the Board of Examiners. The final thesis is assessed by the two supervisors and a third reader who was not involved in the production of the thesis, to be appointed by the Board of Examiners. Theses are usually produced in English or in Dutch.
7
2.5
Exemptions
Exemptions from components of the programme in Year 1 may only be granted upon admission to the programme. Requests for exemption from components in Year 2 must be submitted to the Board of Examiners together with a recommendation from your tutor.
2.6
Internships
A work placement offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study and to assess their own knowledge and skills, better preparing them for employment after graduation. Detailed information about work placements can be found in the Faculty Placement Guide, which is available from the Faculty’s information desk (Drift 8). The Guide is also available online at www.let.uu.nl/stage. The Faculty of Arts offers many different work placements. Studying abroad
In Year 2, students take research seminars and/or tutorials at advanced level. They are strongly advised to complete a substantial part of their coursework in their second year outside the Faculty of Arts, for instance abroad (e.g., in Flanders), at other Dutch universities that offer specialised research seminars in their field, or where relevant, by taking part in programmes offered by the Dutch national research institutes. For information about possibilities and conditions, students should contact the Programme Coordinator and the Coordinator at the International Office. Depending on the degree programme, students may either study, undertake a research project or go on a work placement abroad. A number of grants are available at both Faculty and University level, and Utrecht University has a number of working agreements with universities and institutions abroad in and outside of Europe. For more information on studying abroad, the various exchange programmes, grants and the registration procedures, contact the Faculty’s International Office at Drift 8. Information can also be found at www.let.uu.nl/international. Information on exchange programmes at University level and on Cultureel Accoord grants with other countries can be found in the Studying Abroad information booklet (Studeren in het buitenland). This booklet is available from the Faculty’s student information desk, the International Office and the International Relations Office in the Administration Building at Heidelberglaan 8 (Uithof) (tel.: (030) 2532696).

Job prospects
After successfully completing the MA programme in Dutch Language and Literature, graduates will be able to formulate a research proposal for a PhD in this field, and will have an overview of the place occupied by their own research within the context of international research. Graduates of this programme will therefore be eligible for PhD studies in the Netherlands or abroad. They will also be eligible for positions that require academic expertise in Dutch studies in the broad sense, but not necessarily a PhD, for instance in governmental organisations or in a publishing house. The qualifications attained by students will allow them to continue in a PhD programme in the Netherlands or elsewhere, or to perform higher-level functions that require advanced research skills.
2.9
Supervision
The MA programme in Dutch Language and Literature offers students an academic education tailored to their personal interests and ambitions. Upon beginning the programme, all students will be assigned an experienced lecturer/researcher from the relevant discipline as a tutor. Together with the student and the Programme Committee and/or Programme Coordinator, the tutor will draw up the student’s study plan for Year 1. During this year, students will meet with their tutor for a discussion at least once after each term. In the course of this discussion, the progress of the student’s studies will be assessed and their study plan adjusted if necessary. After three terms have passed, a study plan will be drawn up for Year 2. This document will discuss the student’s thesis plan and will list the various optional courses to be taken outside the Faculty, and where. The student and tutor will also discuss which supplementary skills (e.g., foreign languages or ICT skills) are necessary for the successful completion of the programme. Such additional courses may not replace compulsory or elective courses in the programme. After approval by the Board of Examiners, the study plan (and any adjustments or additions) will be recorded in the student’s dossier/portfolio. Students may also obtain personal advice from the Faculty of Arts’ academic counsellors and the Utrecht University Student Service Centre. Non-Dutch students may also consult the International Offices of the University and the Faculty of Arts (e.g., with regard to any visa problems).

Co-ordinator: dr. A.A.M. Besamusca Lecturer(s): dr. A.A.M. Content: This course focuses on the design properties of syntactic variation. In current generative theorizing, this variation (i.e. parametrization) is located in the functional system of human language (Tense, Negation, Determiner, Comp..). We will study variation from a mesoperspective (languages from the same language family), and a micro-perspective (varieties of a single language/dialect systems). Special attention will be paid to the nominal system (DP). Co-ordinator: Lecturer(s):

Content: In stead of a Bachelor's degree a declaration of admission may be offered to get access to a master programme. This course may also be followed by students who aim at a 'doctoraalexamen' but have not yet passed enough courses for their 'specialisatieprogramma'. At the end of the course, a student is able to:- read and evaluate literature critically;- carry out research on and with questionairres and report on this research; - evaluate wether questionnaires are a suitable tool in a specific situation.Questionnaires are frequently used to assess opinions, behaviour in the past, plans for the future, and other unobservable variables. This course is on the design of standardized questionnaires. The course starts with a common phenomenon: answers on questionnaires are distorted by characteristics of the research setting. Not only the attitudes, behaviour, or the facts that the researcher wants to trace determine the answers on questions, but also, for instance, characteristics of the wording of the question. Hence, the validity of questionnaires is at stake.Suppose a researcher wants to assess the quality of the communication in an organisation, how should (s)he formulate adequete questions? Psychological experiments show that it does make a difference wether it is asked if the the quality of communication is 'good', 'bad', or wether it is asked if one is satisfied with the communication: three formulations which are supposed to lead to equal answers on a conceptual level. However, looking at the answers, this is seldom the case. What does this mean for design of questionairres? How should they be designed?A questionnaire is in fact a way of communication between researcher and respondent. If we understand this communication, we can interpret the answers on the questionnaire. This perspective will be held in this course. From studies on the communication in questionnaires it will be determined which criteria will have to be met in order for a questionnaire to be valid. These criteria will encompass both characteristics of the endproduct as well as characteristics of the design process. Co-ordinator: Lecturer(s):

Content: Most current research in formal semantics for natural language is based on the framework known as “Montague Grammar”, developed from the seminal work of Richard Montegue in the early seventies. Familiarity with this framework is an indispensable prerequisite for any student of semantics. This course provides a detailed introduction to Montague grammar. Students will familiarize themselves with the technical apparatus used in Montague Grammar but the focus will be on linguistic issues and the treatment of quantification, intensionality and variable binding. The purpose of this course is to provide the student of linguistics with sufficient knowledge of the foundations of formal semantics to allow her/him to read current research literature on the topic. The course is not suited for students at the beginner's level: familiarity with first order predicate logic is presupposed Co-ordinator: Lecturer(s):

Co-ordinator: dr. A.J. Co-ordinator: dr. W.H.M. Content: Current syntactic research tends to treat Logical Form as the place where syntactic conditions (Case Checking, wh-checking, etc) apply. However, since LF is the place where syntax meets meaning, direct motivation for LF representations can only come from semantic considerations. In this research seminar, we will discuss theories of LF-derivation and their semantic motivations. In particular, we will discuss such issues as Bound Variable Pronouns (why does 'her lover was seduced by every woman' not mean the same as 'every woman seduced her lover'?), Scope ambiguities (why can 'all politicians fight for a good cause' mean that all politicians agree, but also that they disagree?), and the interaction of quantifiers and wh-expressions (why can 'what did everyone buy?' be answered with 'John a new coat, Susan a new sweater, ...', while this is not an appropriate answer to 'what was bought by everyone?').Familiarity with generative syntax at an advanced level is reguired.
Relevant institutions
Faculty of Arts Library The Utrecht University Faculty of Arts Library is the only Faculty of Arts library in the Netherlands with such a large and accessible collection. The Library aims to offer not only a large collection of printed resources, but also an increasing collection of digital resources. The Library has a number of special collections, including history-of-art photographs and slides, old and unusual prints, an organ archive and an extensive collection of sound recordings, videos, DVDs and games. There are nearly 50 study places in the Faculty of Arts Library, equipped with computers linked to the network, which are suitable for group and individual work. In addition, there are more than 30 study places near the Lending Desk and the Information Desk for desk research and for consulting the library catalogue. Study places are also available to students close to each of the various library collections. For more information, visit www.let.uu.nl/bibliotheek. Centre for Information Technology and Multimedia (CIM) Located at Kromme Nieuwegracht 80, the CIM offers a number of computer rooms with computers available for student use (with programs such as Word and Powerpoint, plus Internet access, etc.). These computer rooms are also used for teaching purposes. In addition, the CIM helpdesk provides general support for study activities. Technical questions about the use of the University’s student e-mail system and other ICT facilities (e.g., the portfolio and WebCT) can be addressed to the helpdesk. The CIM website,

www.let.uu.nl/cim, also provides detailed instructions for students. For more information, visit www.let.uu.nl/cim. Faculty of Arts Science Shop The Faculty of Arts Science Shop makes academic knowledge accessible to those social services institutions that do not have the means or opportunities to obtain this knowledge otherwise. Staff at the Science Shop convert requests for support into concrete research questions and find a student to carry out the research, as well as a lecturer from the appropriate specialisation to supervise it. What does the Faculty of Arts Science Shop have to offer? For many students, carrying out practical research through the Faculty’s Science Shop is an attractive opportunity to gain experience in their specialisation and to apply their expertise in a broader academic, social or cultural context. As well as learning practical skills, students also make contacts that will prove useful in the employment market. In addition, of course, the students earn credits for their research. The Science Shop provides concrete research questions that can be used either for individual papers, final Bachelor’s degree programme papers, work placements or Master’s theses. Students may also take the initiative to come up with their own research project. The Science Shop can, if required, contact an organisation suggested by the student. Current research projects Research projects for which requests have been received (and which are therefore available for students to undertake) are published in the Faculty Messages section of the U-blad and on notice boards at the student information desk and in the Faculty buildings, as well as on the Science Shop website, www.uu.nl/wetenschapswinkels/letteren.
