Grammar Unit 9
Phrasal Verbs Review
Meaning of Phrasal Verbs Vocabulary Understanding language
PHRASAL VERBS Phrasal verbs have two parts: a verb (put, take, get, give, go) and or or sometimes two “small words” (on, up, out, in) which go with the verb. Normal Verbs Take I took an aspirin because I had a terrible headache. Break He broke his arm during the game. Catch She managed to catch the last train. Phrasal Verbs Take off Take off your coat! It’s too hot here. Break up Jennny broke up with her boyfriend yesterday. Catch up with You go ahead. I’ll catch up with you later.
The “small words” in phrasal verbs are important, because they completely change the meaning. For Example: Get up = get out of bed Get away = escape Get on with someone = like being with them Some points to help you use the phrasal verbs correctly. 1. Can the phrasal verb be split? There is no problem here if the verb is intransitive (the verb doesn’t take an object) because there is no object. We find it hard to get by on just one salary. (There is no object to split get and by.) 2. If the verb is transitive, we need to know if the verb is separable or not. If it is not separable, then the two parts need to keep together. The report looks into problems facing workers in poor countries. Not: The report looks problems facing workers in poor countries into.
3. With separable phrasal verbs, the object can come between the two parts. We looked his name up on the internet. We looked up his name on the internet. 4. If we use a pronoun with a separable phrasal verb, then it must come between the two parts. I don’t believe you. You made it up. Note : I don’t believe you. You made up it. 5. Some phrasal verbs have three (or more) parts. These can not be split. The big companies get away with murder. I don’t know why people put up with it.
