Summary Keywords: co-creation, public engagement, social media, Pinterest, Instagram, museum studies The client-organization relationship has drastically changed the last decade or so. Increasingly consumers cause the organization to reconsider the value creation process, leading to strategies of co-creation. In this view, value is co-created with consumers through meaningful experiences. Museums, with their focus on interactivity and experience creation, can then be seen as the preeminent loci for co-creational practices. Social media can be seen as the perfect tool for this new type of consumer (museum visitor) to be informed, networked, empowered and active. Accordingly, the goal of this research paper was to assess the opportunities and pitfalls in the implementation of co-creational practices at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS)and its Museum of Natural Sciences (MNS), and what role social media platforms (Pinterest and Instagram in particular) can play in achieving this goal. This generated three specific research questions:

Which approach can best optimize strengths and opportunities and minimize weaknesses and threats in co-creating value with social media in general at the MNS?
Which approach can best optimize strengths and opportunities and minimize weaknesses and threats in co-creating value with Pinterest and Instagram at the MNS?
A qualitative approach was opted for. In a first part, two best practices for using the two social media platforms relevant to this study in a co-creational manner are discussed (the Natural History Museum in London for Pinterest and The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago for Instagram). In a second part, two semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. This strategy allowed to approximately maintain the structure of the literature review, while still allowing the freedom to elaborate on certain aspects. Especially on the Museum’s social media platforms, the greater dialogue and more direct contact with visitors is already visible. The RBINS and its Museum are doing great efforts to stimulate and incite this dialogue, and should keep on doing so with ever more engaging content. This way, the Museum can really present itself as a truly unique place where truly unique experiences can take place. The results of the research led to the following recommendations:

Recommendations for co-creation in general
Focus on small-scale projects to introduce co-creation practices, as these offer the creative breathing space and the relatively low investment that, at this point, are most essential.
Try to come up with unique and creative ways that go beyond mere promotion to engage the audience in future (citizen) science and exhibition projects, most notably with the Cold Case Bernissart project coming up.
Actively share these efforts on your social media platforms to make a limited project resonate with a large crowd, and actively engage people in a dialogue about museums, collections, and scientific topics.
Recommendations for social media in general
Now that the RBINS is going through a period of reorganization, consider implementing an institute-wide social media strategy now. A social media expert is desirable.
Be aware of what people post on sites like TripAdvisor. Summarizing the main concerns and remarks on a regular basis and forwarding them to the people that can solve them is a good way of using the new museum visitor to your advantage at a very concrete level.
Get the scientists, researchers and experts involved – they probably do not realize how much of an ambassador for the Institute and the Museum they can be if they engage through social media.
Don’t be afraid to be really enthusiastic, ‘nerdy’ and engaging. People are emotionally attached to exhibitions, so evoking emotional responses and making visitors relive the experience online is perfectly acceptable.
Find a distinct voice for each of the social media platforms, and try to create unique stories within those frameworks.
Recommendations for Pinterest
Pinning user-generated content (location-tagged Instagram photos, drawings,) seems a viable approach for the RBINS as well, given the large amount of artists visiting the Museum, and the vast collection of location-tagged Instagram photos. Provide an incentive for people (e.g. a contest, like the NHM).
Draw inspiration from how the NHM London structures its boards.
Call upon artists and art students visiting the Museum to share their artwork through their own social media, accompanied by appropriate hashtags, so that it can be repinned.

Recommendations for Instagram
Dive into the enormous collection of content tagged with the Museum’s location to find out what people are excited about, and in which ways they photograph the content. Discover how the Museum fits into the visitor’s own stories, and use these insights to create unique content that, although it can only be created by the RBINS itself, still reflects this shared experience.
Focus on storytelling, and create an engaging narrative for the Museum. Use specific as well as general tags to reach a wide audience. Use the digitizing of the Museum’s collections as an opportunity to highlight some of the top pieces, and to revive interest in some of the more forgotten specimens. Engage researchers and invite them to share their stories.
Look into adding a multimedia component to IkHebEenVraag.be, so that the ‘shareability’ of its content increases.

1 Introduction The past decade has seen a great number of changes in the relationship between an organization (whether these are companies, NGOs, universities, federal state institutions,…) and its clients. A central concept is that of value creation: organizations “react to certain demands by providing a certain value proposition – a collection of intended advantages with which the client can realize certain demands” (Kotler et al., 2014: 11; my translation). Recently, organizations have started to realize that more can be achieved when one shifts “from a product- and firm-centric view to personalized consumer experiences”, with “informed, networked, empowered, and active consumers […] increasingly co-creating value with the firm” (Prahalad & Ramaswamy, 2004a: 5). Keeping this trend in mind, it is clear that the emergence of the Web 2.0 and social media (and their widespread use by organizations) in the last decade feeds very well into this process of value cocreation. This approach to value creation and marketing is not limited purely to firms. It can also be extended to how federal institutions like the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (henceforth referred to as RBINS) in general, and the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels (henceforth referred to as MNS) as an integral part of it in particular should try and build a strong brand and a tight-knit community with a great deal of client (visitor) interaction. Museums, with lots of interactivity already present in their day-to-day activities, might be pre-eminent loci for seeing value co-creation in action. As Govier points out, never has the museological sector seen a greater interest in engagement and participation (2009: 3). It should then be no surprise that the research in this paper focuses on these specific aspects, with a special attention to social media. The general research question is as follows:
What strategies and approaches can best serve the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels in the optimization of its approach to co-creation?
The Museum’s recent plans of expanding its social media platforms with a Pinterest and Instagram account generate the following three sub-questions:

In the first section of the literature review of this research paper, a brief overview is given of some of the key concepts of value co-creation. A second part focuses on co-creation and visitor engagement in a museological context. To conclude the literature review, we take a look at some of the results generated by social media research in museological contexts. The empirical research consists of two parts. First, the Pinterest page of London’s Natural History Museum and the Instagram account of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History serve as best practice assessments of what co-creation approaches, projects, and social media strategies and posts work best. A second part is based on focus interviews. One interview is conducted with the staff in charge of communication and social media at the MNS in Brussels; a second interview is conducted with Emily Graslie, communication professional at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Contrasting these interviews will generate new ideas for co-creational approaches and how these can best be implemented in such a way that they are best adapted to the specific situation of the MNS in Brussels. A summary of the most important results and recommendations will conclude this research paper.

2. Co-creation The literature review of this research paper revolves around the central concept of value cocreation. The first part of this section provides a general discussion with a brief overview of the key terms and concepts in this co-creation process, and the societal changes that have brought this new view about. Although value co-creation has started out within in a context focused on businesses, it is self-evident that co-creation concepts can be applied to any type of organization that engages in offering value propositions: the second part of this literature review then assesses how co-creation can operate specifically within a museological context. The final part discusses the ever rising popularity of social media as one of the many tools and facilitators in this value co-creation process.
2.1 Co-creation: a new perspective on value creation Until fairly recently, the main line of thought on value proposition was that it went in one direction, in that the organization creates value for the receiver of that value (the customer - in the scenario of this research paper, the museum visitor) to use. Incited by the seminal work of, among others, Prahalad & Ramaswamy (2004a & b) and Ramaswamy & Gouillart (2011), organizations have started to step away from this unidirectional conception, instead adopting marketing and organizational governance approaches that can be summed up under the umbrella term of value co-creation. At the basis of the work of Prahalad and Ramaswamy lie two paradoxes that characterize the context of the 21st century economy: on the one hand, management has more options, strategically, that generate less value; on the other hand, consumers have more and more choices that provide less satisfaction (2004b: 4). The authors note that this emerging reality “is forcing a reexamination of the traditional system of company-centric value creation” (2004b: 4). Organizations need to focus on uniqueness, and need to do so with new, innovative approaches centered around the organization-customer relationship and experiences of value co-creation, since “high-quality interactions that enable an individual customer to co-create unique experiences with the company are the key to unlocking new sources of competitive advantage” (2004 a: 7). After all, the role of the consumer has drastically changed over the last decade, at the basis of which lie certain societal developments (list adapted from Prahalad & Ramaswamy, 2004b: 4): 9
Information access: people have much better and much faster access to much more information. They do not have to rely solely on the organization itself for this information, and they can look up prices, offers and advantages - in short, value propositions - without having to rely solely on the organization to do so. Furthermore, the sheer abundance of information to which 21st century consumers have access has not gone unnoticed: already in 2010, then CEO of Google Eric Schmidt noted that every two days now as much information is created as was done from the dawn of civilization up until 2003.1 It is self-evident, then, that organizations need to put a great deal of effort into creating a unique experience in collaboration with their customers, in order to truly stand out.
Global view: not only is more information more freely accessible, geographical borders to information are eroding very fast (and, one could argue, more than ten years after the seminal work of Prahalad & Ramaswamy, are faded away almost completely).
Networking, which is transforming the more traditional top-down approach to marketing communication, by creating communities of consumers that share information independent of the organization. It is striking that this was already noted in 2004, when modern social networking sites like LinkedIn and the now long gone MySpace were only a year old, and now omnipresent sites like Facebook and YouTube had yet to be launched. The fact that these social media seem ever so present in our surroundings as of 2015 makes this cocreation shift ever so relevant.
Experimentation: consumers experiment to a far greater extent with creating their own products, stories and experiences. They do not rely solely on the organization to generate value, but try their own hand at it, and eagerly share the results through social media.
Activism: consumers can better discriminate when making choices, and they more actively encourage others to do the same and speak out. This is done, for instance, through social media –organizations are becoming more and more aware of the need for a sound social media strategy that addresses, amongst others, complaints that consumers now can post for everyone to see.

These developments created a new type of consumer: one that is informed, connected, empowered, and active (Prahalad & Ramaswamy, 2004 a: 6); one that is best reached with the help of a well-developed co-creation approach. This radically changing consumer nature also implies that if an organization wants to keep reaching this new consumer, the relationship between consumer and organization needs to change radically, as well. However, this does not mean that organizations need to yield to each and every wish of their public, or let the consumer drive the value creation process – the focus really needs to be on the ‘co’ in ‘co-creation’. The table below provides an overview of what is meant and not meant by co-creation.

It is evident that some of the concepts in the left column (like meticulous market research and demand-side innovation) are necessary for co-creation to take place, but I believe the point here is that these are principal requirements for any organization’s marketing approach, and as such are not a distinctive feature of the co-creation process. As I see it, in characterizing these concepts as not distinctive of a co-creation approach, Prahalad & Ramaswamy want to avoid that the term is hollowed out by incorrect or insincere use – a process also seen in green-washing practices by certain companies. 12
Keeping the right column in mind, it immediately becomes clear that co-creation does not in any sense mean that the organization should give up its power completely. It rather states that consumers will act in an informed, connected, empowered and active manner, which should be embraced by organizations. A good example of this approach is Starbucks. As stated in the table, the product may be the same, but customers are given the freedom to construct different experiences, with or without input of the company. This product in the case of Starbucks, coffee, can be customized with all sorts of flavor syrups to the consumer’s taste, and it can then have the consumer’s name written on the cup. This way, a close connection is created between consumer and form, with what is basically still a fairly standard product. The fact that so many (networked!) people share their experiences with Starbucks through social media, along with the company’s steep growth, is illustrative of the validity of the co-creational approach. Prahalad & Ramaswamy particularly focus on co-creation in a pure business context – a context that is, in the end, characterized by the ultimate goal of profit maximization. Museums, especially those like the MNS in Brussels that are government-operated, present a slightly different case. Of course they should also maintain a viable cost structure, and extra profits are very welcome indeed, but first and foremost, institutions like the RBINS have a societal role and public duty to fulfill. However, I will argue that museums also can - and should - benefit from this co-creational approach. After all; the Museum is a service provider, and markets its service to its intended target groups, in ways no different from those of businesses. Moreover, strong austerity measures2 imposed on the RBINS force it to be as efficient as possible with the limited means available – for which, I will argue in this research paper, co-creation can be a powerful tool in the long term. If one considers Table 2, it could furthermore be argued that the strong focus on experience makes the co-creational approach particularly interesting for the museum sector, as it might be one of the pre-eminent locations to see co-creation in action. In essence, every museum visit is already an experience. Thus, the knowhow of museologists regarding ways to make that visit a lasting experience is already present. However, a changing consumer profile also implies changing the way in which to interact with those consumers to (co-)create more meaningful, personalized 2

experiences. Of course, this should be done without losing out of sight the defining character and uniqueness of the museum – an absolutely necessary precondition for successful co-creation. As Leask puts it, “museums are developing and expanding their core product as a means of attracting potential visitor groups through gaining a fuller appreciation of their respective needs and expectations, whilst balancing the need for authenticity and care of the integrity of the cultural heritage resources” (2015: 1). Indeed, museums have embraced co-creation as a valuable framework that allows for creative, innovative approaches to the organization-consumer relationship. In the next section, we will take a look at some of the specific phenomena arising from applying co-creation to museums, with special attention to the opportunities, as well as to the pitfalls that arise when adopting a cocreation approach.
2.2 Co-creation in a museum context Museums “serve the functions of collection, research and exhibition, as well as education and recreation” (Sheng and Chen 2012: 53). Combined with their large degrees of interactivity and their inherent focus on experience, these institutions already possess a large potential for co-creation projects. Indeed, the practice is being embraced – Spiliopoulou et al., among others, point out that “museums have experienced a strong cultural shift from object-oriented towards audience-oriented strategic approaches” (2014: 286) – note the parallels with Prahalad & Ramaswamy’s descriptions of the shift from company-centric value creation towards (consumer-oriented) co-creation of value. Govier (2009) also points out the many ways in which museums have started to put in efforts to become more user-led. Govier defines the term as “working with our audiences (both existing and new) to create something together: it could be meaning or interpretation; a space or exhibition; an online resource or collective response” (2009: 3) – the emphasis here is very much on the concrete, practical applications of co-creation. She prefers the term co-creation over co-production, “as the former implies slightly more openness about where the collaborative journey might take all of the participants” (2009: 3; see also Table 2 on what does and what does not constitute co-creation).

When it comes to specific visitor participation at museums, Govier defines four broad categories based on Simon’s excellent work The Participatory Museum (2010):
Contribution asks visitors to provide limited and specific objects, actions or ideas to an institutionally controlled process.
Collaboration invites visitors to serve as active partners in the creation of a museum project which is originated by and ultimately controlled by the museum.
Co-creation happens when visitors and the institution work together from the start to define the project’s goals, and generate the program or exhibition based on the community’s interests: it is about their agendas.
Hosting is when the museum turns over some of its facilities and resources for external groups to use as they want, hosting programs or events that they develop and implement themselves. (2009: 3-4) Note that, despite revolving around similar concepts, co-creation in this application of the
term means something different than co-creation as defined in section 2.1. While the former use of the term refers to a changing way in which to perceive value creation, the latter use of the term by Simon refers to a very specific and advanced instance of visitor participation. In this research paper, I will follow Govier in arguing that the labeling of one specific instance of visitor participation as cocreation is rather problematic. It might give the impression that co-creation (in Prahalad & Ramaswamy’s definition of the term) always requires lots of power sharing and an unpredictable outcome – and thus involves high risks and unpredictable returns on investments. This is one of the key pitfalls and reasons for hesitating to implement co-creation: institutions are rather reserved when it comes to giving up part of their power (even when they are alerted to do so; see Govier 2009:4). This is why Govier wants the focus of the co-creation debate to shift towards other directions: “when we stop making power hand-over a central aim of co-creation, I think we give ourselves many more possibilities to do interesting work with our audiences, which will be embraced by more of our colleagues (and will probably involve quite a significant sharing of power along the way)” (2009: 4). She advances a broader definition of co-creation, in which contribution, 15
collaboration and co-creation are pooled together: “co-creation fundamentally means museum and gallery professionals working with our audiences (both existing and potential) to create something new together” (2009: 4). As one may have noticed, this already sounds much more like a practical application of Prahalad & Ramaswamy’s co-creation in a museum context, and this will also be the way in which the term will be used throughout this research paper. This means that co-creation can also exist within more limited, less power-sharing methods. Simon, among others, underscores the importance of slowly introducing co-creation, starting with small projects and low involvement and risk initiatives: “There are already people in every institution—managers, staff, volunteers, board members—who want to make this happen. […] find a participatory goal that connects to your mission, and develop away to achieve it. Start small. Ask a visitor a question or invite a volunteer to help you solve a creative problem. Listen, collaborate, test your assumptions, and try again. Soon enough, participation will be a part of the way you do your work, and by extension, the way your institution functions” (2010: 346-347). It is in this sense that an informed, connected, empowered, and active use of the social media arsenal available to the MNS can reach the new type of informed, connected, empowered, and active consumer. A great deal of initiatives has already been taken by museums, and a great deal of research has already been conducted on these projects’ impact and effectiveness in creating a shared experience between museum and visitor. For co-creation to take place, Simon argues, you need institution-wide involvement which can nevertheless start off with a single person: “Participation becomes sustainable when institutions develop systems to support enthusiastic staff members [...]. It’s a matter of flexibility, focus, and trust. For managers, it’s a question of helping staff members see what is possible, and then developing mechanisms to guide their efforts in the most effective direction. For employees and volunteers, it’s a matter of finding new ways for participatory mechanisms to enhance the value and impact of their work” (2010: 346). 16
2.3 Social Media as part of the museum’s co-creation experience The steep rise of social media use, by consumers but also by museums, feeds into this new consumer profile and a new way of visitor interaction, serving the purpose of “extending the space of museum communication” (Stuedahl & Lowe 2013: 1). A great deal of research has been produced on theoretical aspects and concrete case studies, a selection of which will be presented as a conclusion of the literature review of this paper. Although members of different social media platforms and online communities have a lot in common with each other, it should be noted that there still are different types of social media users. Forrester Research distinguishes six categories (with considerable overlap):
Creators (24%) who produce content, upload videos, write blogs;
Critics (37%) who submit reviews, rate content, and comment on social media sites;
Collectors (21%) who organize links and aggregate content for personal or social consumption;
Joiners (51%) who maintain accounts on social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn;
Spectators (73%) who read blogs, watch YouTube videos, visit social sites;
Inactives (18%) who don’t visit social sites.
(Taken from Simon, 2010: 8) Understanding that your audience may use the content you created, or the content they create themselves in the experience context of your organization in vastly different ways, encourages paying attention to a personalized consumer relationship and experiences co-created by visitors. While social media use by Museums is gaining ground, building these sustainable relationships with visitors (one of the key points of co-creation) is still in its infancy, according to Stuedahl & Lowe (2013: 5). They acknowledge the difficulty of this cultural co-creation shift, but they also see an opportunity in recently graduated content designers and young museum professionals, who are “well-versed in digital literacy” and are “easily at home in the roles of both active media contributor and passive media spectator” (2013: 17). 17
Smørdal et al. admit that “not all content can or should be communicated nor should it all involve dialogue or participation” (2014: 10). After all, some types of content are simply more suitable for thriving in a social media context than others. They argue that low threshold practices like tagging, or inviting visitors in creative ways to follow the Museum’s social media, are sometimes more effective (because a lower level of involvement is needed) than more elaborate efforts of engagement. Most importantly, the museum’s subject and history “must be related to people’s current context in order to excite contributions” (2014: 10). The example is given of connecting exhibits about energy production to people’s own energy consumption. Their research echoes the need for a profound awareness of the consumer in the consumer-organization relationship, one of the key aspects of co-creation. This way, museums can create precisely this “experience environment in which consumers can have active dialogue and co-construct personalized experiences” (Prahalad & Ramaswamy, 2004 a: 8). Russo et al. argue that “the social media space presents an ideal opportunity for museums to build online communities of interest around authentic cultural information” (2008: 21). They cite creative expression, exploration of identity, and cultural participation as reasons for visitors to engage through social media. However, certain pitfalls should be kept in mind as well. The internet is “increasingly populated by a bewildering variety of individual, commercial and corporate voices” (2008: 23), which makes it difficult for the organization to stand out, and for the consumer to find reliable information. Furthermore, Russo et al. also mention the perception of the unpredictability of giving up trust and transferring some responsibilities as one of the major stumbling blocks for increasing the use of social media and co-creational practices (2008: 25). One of the target groups that the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels has found difficulty with to reach are older teenagers and young adults. Instagram, which the Museum recently started using, is then perfect for reaching those audiences, with a staggering 76% of users between the age of 16 and 34 (41% in the 16-24 bracket, and 35% in the 25-34 bracket).3 Certain museums have indeed expertly embraced this specific photograph-sharing network to build a

thriving online community. The visitors also use their smart phones and social networks to document a Museum’s exhibitions themselves: Hillman et al. describe the positive co-creational influence of these practices in the Gothenburg Natural History Museum, and the potential to “extend the reach of the museum beyond its walls” (2012: 9). The common thread that runs through all these examples is the notion that social media should not be seen simply as a tool to create more visibility and reach more people – the new consumer sees through all of this. Moreover, using social media solely for the purpose of replicating and sharing the content generated by traditional communication channels, would be equal to denying the enormous potential social media have. Russo et al. underscore the absolute importance of including social media policy in the strategic approach to communication by the museum (2008: 28). Leask adds two important incentives to do so, namely the “increasing financial pressure and effectiveness measures being imposed on these predominantly publicly-funded institutions” and “re-engagement with the traditional audience, but also [developing] the core product and service as a means of targeting potential visitor groups that may have hitherto been ignored” (2015: 2). Social media should then be used to strengthen a sustainable relationship with visitors. This way, a unique space can be created in which co-creation can take place and an active dialogue can emerge.

3 Research Methodology The aim of the present research is to explore what the possibilities and pitfalls are for introducing co-creational practices in the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels, with specific attention to two social media platforms that are still in their inception phase at the MNS in Brussels: Instagram and Pinterest. Given the limited period of time in which both platforms have been active, it was decided that quantitative analysis of traffic to the two sites (like Van Waeyenberge 2014 has done for the Facebook page of the MNS) would be pointless. Instead, a qualitative approach was opted for. In a first part, two best practices for using the two social media platforms relevant to this study in a cocreational manner will be assessed (the Natural History Museum in London for Pinterest and The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago for Instagram). A description of both platforms is provided in the best practice sections that deal with them below. In a second part, two semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. This strategy allowed to approximately maintain the structure of the literature review, while still allowing the freedom to elaborate on certain aspects. The three parts were concerned with

The social media approach in general;
Pinterest and Instagram specifically.
The first interview was a group interview with three communication professionals at the RBINS. The second was a Skype interview with Emily Graslie, an educational YouTube personality and (online) communications professional at the Field Museum in Chicago. The idea behind this approach was that contrasting the perspectives of the communication professionals at the RBINS with those of a communications specialist of a Museum that has fully embraced co-creation would lead to compelling insights and subsequent recommendations.

4 Results and discussion 4.1 Best practices 4.1.1 Natural History Museum in London and Pinterest 4.1.1.1 On Pinterest According to the Pinterest app store page, the platform is “a visual bookmarking tool that helps you discover and save creative ideas”4. You can bookmark visual content and articles from other websites (with the source of the photograph being included). It can be used to plan projects, get creative ideas, explore hobbies, gather inspiration for traveling and day trips,… But it is also a useful tool for organizations. Pinterest users can organize the content they gathered on ‘mood boards’ with different themes, they can favorite other users’ posts, and they can re-pin these bookmarks (called ‘pins’) on their own profile. They can also follow each other. 4.1.1.2 The Natural History Museum in London’s use of the platform The Natural History Museum (henceforth NHM) in London is, with respect to collections, the largest of its kind in Europe, with a collection of more than 80 million specimens (the RBINS ranks third, with a collection of approximately 37 million specimens). It resembles the RBINS in that the NHM is also intertwined with a research institution whose work mainly revolves around the Museum’s collections. According to their 2020 strategic outline, there are three main areas of focus (which they call narratives): Origins and Evolution, Diversity of Life, and Sustainable Futures. A lot of attention is paid to co-creation. Key priorities include “[building] online communities and our NHM membership scheme around our three big narratives and issue an engaging, topical stream of information, news and commentary”, and the key projects include “[m]ass digitization of collections; new website and social media channels, [and] rich digital content for use both in-gallery and for mobile devices” (The Natural History Museum, 2015: 16). A great deal of effort is put in creating unique stories, underscoring the experience aspect, and building communities, three of the cornerstones of successful co-creation.

Apart from a Pinterest page, the NHM’s social media platforms include a Facebook page, a Twitter, Instagram and Google+ account, and a YouTube channel.

A nice detail about this exhibition is the ‘wishing tree’, where people can write their thoughts and hopes on the exhibition’s subject on leaf-shaped pieces of paper that are then hung up in a tree for other visitors to read. A smart move from a co-creation perspective: it is a small and limited project, on a topic that everyone is at least a little bit concerned about, illustrating the need for initiatives that “must be related to people’s current context in order to excite contributions” (Smørdal et al., 2014:10). 5

At first, this seems like a rather classic approach, with different topics offering a glimpse of what is happening in and around the Museum. However, upon closer investigation, the NHM’s Pinterest page uses anything but a classical approach. Of course, boards like those on the NHM shop use content generated by the Museum itself, but others, like those on the NHM itself and on permanent exhibitions or events at the museum, are loaded with images that are pinned from the social media accounts of users, in part explaining the large following of the NHM account. Photographs posted by visitors on Instagram, Twitter… are pinned to create a patchwork of visitor experiences, made up of selfies, the Museum’s architecture, the Museum’s collections… This way, some boards rely almost entirely on the visitors’ input, that, together with boards that contain content only the NHM itself can produce (including content cross-posted from the NHM’s other social media platforms), combine into a true testament to co-creation. Monthly prizes one can win by using the hashtags provided by the NHM are an incentive that help achieve this goal. 4.1.1.3 Relevance to the RBINS At first sight it doesn’t seem that evident to integrate this approach at the RBINS. However, in connection with the section of this best practice study on Instagram, an Instagram search for the location “Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen - Muséum des Sciences naturelles”6 reveals that in 2015 alone, more than 200 photographs have already been taken in and around the Museum (and approximately 1000 since the location was first tagged in 2011), documenting a wide array of topics, ranging from the dinosaur graffiti and the wooden iguanodon statue outside of the museum to the different collections inside the museum – it seems like visitors are already co-creating the experience of their visit on their own. For those parts of the institution and especially of the MNS open to the public, pinning this user-generated content rather than pinning content found in the picture database of the RBINS itself seems like an interesting small-scale step towards co-creation using the Pinterest platform. The focus should be on storytelling, and creating a story that visitors want to be part of. Small-scale experimenting (with low time and resources investment) can be conducted to discover ways in which to generate even more content (see section 4.1.2.3 below).

Of course, this user-generated content should be supplemented with content that only the RBINS can provide (like historical photographs, scientists telling about their research…) and content cross-posted from other RBINS social media. But ignoring the enormous potential that is present in this co-created content would mean missing out on great opportunities that lie right around the corner.

4.1.2 The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and Instagram 4.1.2.1 On Instagram In the previous section, we have touched upon Instagram already, without explaining the platform itself in detail. According to their own app store page7, “Instagram is a simple way to capture and share the world's moments. Transform your everyday photos and videos into works of art and share them with your family and friends.” Gaining wider popularity with the advent of smartphones with high-quality cameras, it is a fast-growing photo and video sharing platform for mobile devices (but you can access user profiles via desktop browsers as well) that is particularly popular with younger people. According to MarketingCharts.com, 1 in 5 internet users in the 16-64 year range have an account, 41% of which are in the 16-24 year bracket, and another 35% in the 25-34 year bracket.8 According to Business Insider, the percentage of Instagram users under the age of 35 amounts to no less than 90%.9 This is particularly interesting for the Brussels Museum, which has reported difficulties in keeping younger people attracted and engaged once they stop visiting in the context of a school trip. Features include photo editing, cross-sharing of the photographs on other platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr,… and the possibility of tagging your photographs with relevant topics in the same way Twitter uses hashtags. 4.1.2.2 The Field Museum’s use of the platform Although the collection of 24 million specimens is only two thirds the size of that of the RBINS, the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. It ranked second in the top 10 of dinosaur-related museums CNN recently published10 (in which the RBINS ranked third). According to their mission statement11, the Field Museum wants to “inspire curiosity about life on Earth while exploring how the world came to be and how we can

make it a better place”. As “educators [who] inspire wonder and understanding”, they are very inclusive of all stakeholder groups, in “[inviting] visitors, students, educators and scientists from around the world on a journey of scientific discovery”. With regard to social media, the Field Museum is active on nearly every platform. Next to an Instagram account, the Museum has a Facebook page and two Twitter accounts (one general account, and one account with tweets posted in the name of Sue the T-rex, one of the key specimens in their collection). They also have a FourSquare account, a Vimeo channel, a Flickr account and a Tumblr blog. They recently attracted Emily Graslie, host of the popular YouTube channel The Brain Scoop, which now serves as the Field Museum’s own YouTube channel, posting behind-the-scene content (interviews with scientists, information on unique specimens, expedition logs…).

In two years time, the Field Museum’s Instagram account has gathered 6,000 followers. The 178 posts (averaging 1 to 2 posts each week) span a wide range of topics. They understood that the content presented through this medium should not be the content that can also be made by visitors. They focus on content as diverse as behind-the-scenes stories, peculiar events (like the cleaning of Sue the T-rex, or cheering the Chicago Blackhawks - an ice hockey team - at the time of the 2015 Stanley Cup final), or sneak peeks of exhibitions not yet open to the public.

They also pay a lot of attention to their visitors, with multiple Instagram posts on the Museum’s annual Members Night. In each of their posts, specific attention is paid to storytelling: the photographs are always accompanied by an engaging story, which sometimes just presents the facts in an engaging and compelling manner, and at other times allows room for a little pun (“Make no bones about it- today's weather has been unbelievable” as a caption accompanying a dinosaur statue outside in front of the Museum).

4.1.2.3 Relevance to the RBINS Instagram is a popular platform, generating a massive amount of content. Standing out is key here. When combining the insights from the present assessment of the Field Museum with the fact that lots of Instagram users already actively post a wide array of pictures of their MNS visits, there is a simple conclusion: the focus should be on creating content that only the RBINS can provide. Before posting on Instagram, the key questions should be:
Is this content that could also be made by visitors? If not, look further/ add a unique story.
What engaging stories could I possibly tell that make the post unique?
Which tags can I use that maximize the posts’ visibility?
One of the advantages is that there already is a database of almost 1000 Instagram posts tagged with the location “Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen - Muséum des Sciences naturelles” from which to learn. React to or like these posts with the RBINS’s Instagram account to create a steady, organic following. Some ideas for ways in which unique content can be created and unique stories can be told include:
A lot of visual artists are using the Museum’s collections as inspiration. Organizing a little project that documents their artwork could do very well on all platforms, especially Instagram (then pinned to Pinterest boards). For instance, a custom Museum route (of which the MSN already has a few) specifically designed around artists - highlighting how taxidermists work, leading them along paintings and interesting specimens that could incite their imagination,… that actively promotes connectivity with the Museum’s social media platforms could achieve this goal without asking too big an effort of the staff and the visitor.
Encouraging users to tag their posts with unique hashtags could make finding, liking, commenting on and pinning their content more easy.
Allowing people behind the scenes for documenting parts of the RBINS and its collections generally not open to the public could generate interesting interactions.
Guides could encourage older groups of secondary school students to take photographs and document their experiences.

Ask scientists about their favorite specimen, and let them tell a unique story on it.
4.2 Interviews This section discusses the results and insights gained from the interview conducted at the RBINS with three of its communication professionals (Yannick Siebens, Reinout Verbeke and Charlotte Degueldre, henceforth YS, RV and CD, respectively) and the one conducted with Emily Graslie (EG) from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Quotes used in this section (and translated when necessary) are taken from the interview transcriptions that can be found in Appendices C & D, unless stated otherwise. It should be noted that Ms. Graslie’s expertise and experiences lie predominantly with her YouTube channel The Brain Scoop and its social media platforms (affiliated to the Field Museum), and not with the Field Museum’s own social media as such. However, her knowledge of the Field Museum, of social media and of community building in a museum context made her an ideal respondent for the present research. The contrastive analysis follows a fine-tuning structure: co-creation in general and in a museum context is discussed first, then social media as a co-creational tool in general, and to conclude, concrete examples and strategies on the use of Pinterest and Instagram. 4.2.1 Co-creation in general At the RBINS as well as at the Field Museum, the emergence of a new type of museum visitor has been noticed. YS experiences a much more direct contact with the visitors. This is especially the case with the virtual visitor through social media, where the rise of a forum-like community is seen. EG corroborates this for Chicago, noting that “now more than ever it’s easier for our audience to communicate with us”, and that this helps to “get an understanding of what they know, what they don’t know, and what kind of information they’re seeking about museums”. RV accurately recognizes this evolution as a form of co-creation, and identifies the need for stimulating the dialogue and visitor-generated experience sharing on the Museum’s part. CD furthermore mentions initial successes with ‘mashup’ cards with half of an animal face on them, that children can use as a mask; cross-posting the results of these from Facebook to Pinterest would make for a visually engaging board, as well as the drawings made on the computer in the Dinosaur Gallery. 31

As for co-creation as a daily practice in the Museum, YS mentions that this is not really part of the procedure yet, although she admits that ‘from a marketing point of view, this may be interesting’. Facebook, for instance, has been used with moderate success to generate ideas for naming the next temporary exhibition. It are low-effort initiatives like these that, when accompanied by engaging visual content, may hold the key to a more elaborate use of the practice in the future. RV acknowledges the idea to engage the RBINS community more elaborately for upcoming projects. These initiatives need not cost much time or resources. It are precisely these smaller initiatives (often limited in time) that offer a big enough creative freedom to actively engage an audience in creating something together, without this holding too much of a risk. Even if not successful initially, these efforts can illustrate that the RBINS is fully prepared to engage their visitors, creating a co-creational ‘feedback loop’ with an ever-growing community as a result. One of the ways in which co-creation is happening in the Field Museum (which also focuses on archaeology and human culture) is in the cultural anthropology department. Members of minority cultures and communities are directly involved in research towards their history, resulting in “way less of a Western, 18th – 19th century approach” to “ensure they have a voice in our 32
permanent museum collections”. As a very tangible, direct example of extensive co-creation at work, EG furthermore mentions the enormous success the crowd-funding of ‘Project Hyena Diorama’. EG called upon the Brain Scoop and Field Museum communities to fund the installation of a new striped hyena diorama. With the help of more than 1800 contributors, 91% of the $ 170,000 goal was raised in one month, which she whole-heartedly contributes to the beneficial power of having a tight-knit community of engaged followers. Once crowd-funding is firmly rooted in Belgium as well, the RBINS could look into what projects may benefit from this practice. Concerning the threat institutions may feel in sharing some of their decisional power, all interviewees admit that this may be seen as a threat, but that essentially, there are more practical issues that are relevant to the co-creation discussion, at least at this initial stage. EG mentions that power sharing is not the issue, but rather “a skepticism on the part of the institution of the investment of the audience”. Scientists and museum professionals may just not be very interested in following all the latest trends (given the “volatility of trends, attitudes and public perceptions”), but want to focus on the longevity of the collections instead, to arrive at something that is built to last, regardless of any trends (“we’re not aiming for a blockbuster hit, we’re looking for long term management”). From another angle, YS and CD note that within the RBINS already, there are a lot of departments that need to work together, keeping track of a well-defined timing, planning and budget, in which it is difficult to allow the freedom that comes with co-creation. And even if elaborate co-creation efforts take place, a regulatory framework (implying budget, time and staff investment) is still needed on the part of the institution. This is where the small-scale aspect of initial, targeted co-creation projects (mentioned above) can step in. Concerning budget cuts, EG mentioned the case of the Illinois State Museum, the announced closure of which due to austerity measures generated an enormous public outcry. As YS notes, the RBINS has always had high approval ratings. Continuous efforts to maintain a strong community, which the RBINS is already actively doing, could only strengthen its position in the future. The RBINS also sees a lot of potential in citizen science projects, which actively call upon the community to help researchers in gathering user-generated data. Thinking about creative ways in 33
which visitors can be engaged in and can contribute to the ‘Falcons For Everyone’ project, for which nesting peregrine falcons are live-streamed until the young fly out, could prove fruitful. Furthermore, initial announcements of the Cold Case Bernissart project, in which the investigation towards the cause of death of the ‘flagship’ RBINS iguanodon specimens is reopened, has already incited a great response from the public. Seeing this project as a space for low-risk, small-scale community-engaging experiments could prove interesting. When asked what would be a good future strategy for introducing co-creation at the RBINS, EG resolutely responded that the importance of social media cannot be underestimated in this whole process, as it is “the most accessible, strongest and clearest gateway for an audience or a visitor to communicate with an institution”. The focus should be on creating dialogue, and on “engaging people in a dialogue about museums, collections, and scientific topics”. In this regard, EG notes that museums should “really seriously consider what it means to have a social media expert, on their communications & marketing or science & education department.”

4.2.2 Social media in general In introducing Pinterest and Instagram, the RBINS expands its number of social media platforms from four to six. The four initial platforms were:
Twitter: aimed at a more professional audience of scientists, museum professionals, PhD students, amateur paleontologists… It is used to share the RBINS’s news, as well as for re-tweeting news relevant to museums and natural sciences.
Facebook: aimed more at families visiting the Museum; the focus here lies on the Museum side of the RBINS, and sharing events relevant to the Museum.
A Tumblr blog is used to reach a younger, more ‘savvy’ public. RV praises the versatility of the medium and the wide range of content that works on it, from pictures to news to serving as a log for scientists on expedition.
A YouTube channel - however, that is not being used as extensively, mainly due to the sheer time and budget needed to make professional video content.
RV and YS acknowledge the difficulty with having an institution with a Museum being part of it (“are we communicating as the Museum of Natural Sciences, or as the RBINS with the Museum being a satellite of it?”), but they see the possibilities in uniting the institute with the museum through social media. Although EG cannot tell very much about an overarching strategy for the Field Museum’s social media, she can tell a lot about her strategies for the Brain Scoop and its social media platforms. The key ingredients are engagement and enthusiasm. She acknowledges that one of the advantages is that she can be a public ‘face’ for the Brain Scoop and for the Field Museum, which (online) visitors can relate to very well. It then seems a good strategy to really involve the RBINS scientists and staff in the creation of the social media content, and let them realize what great ambassadors for the institute they could be (also brought up by Van Waeyenberge in his Master’s dissertation, 2014). YS suggests that, partly to help involve the museum’s staff and make them realize they are at the heart of the RBINS’s community, an institute-wide social media policy is

needed once the social media channels are perfected. This dire need for a social media manager or management team is corroborated by EG (see also section 4.1.1 above). Both EG and the staff at the RBINS acknowledge the difficulty in measuring social media success and its influence on actual museum visits. YS and RV think this can only be accurately achieved with a difficult-to-organize, lengthy survey, and EG even finds it “very difficult to justify [her] own success” and thinks the metrics for accurately quantifying this just do not exist yet, in part because social media is so new. EG says that she uses “more anecdotal evidence than anything I talk about the enriching interactions that I have with people when I meet them. I talk about interviews like this, that I grant to people who have gone into a field of study like this, because of the work of museums and of things like the Brain Scoop”. It then seems essential to focus on a longterm strategy, and to make management and scientists aware (in a qualitative rather than a quantitative manner) of the impact a good online community and social media strategy and can have. CD mentions that having some form of social media and community management could also help in addressing issues with higher management. The new consumer and museum visitor is more powerful, more assertive, and more connected, which requires a much swifter action to addressing problems on the part of the Museum. She gives the example of TripAdvisor, where the Museum’s overall approval ratings are very good. However, sometimes there is a small point of critique from the visitors (cf. Figure 6 below, for instance). If these issues could get to higher management in a well-regulated manner and on a regular basis (for instance, as YS proposes, through monthly updates), solving them could become a lot easier. This resonated clearly with EG, who noted that “what generates most responses is the [Field] Museum or me demonstrating that we’re paying attention. We’re paying attention to local or global issues and conversations, and we’re actively participating in those”.

Another example brought up by CD illustrates that co-creation and the awareness of a new kind of museum visitor could drastically influence the Museum’s strategy and actions, even without it being an essential part of the daily operations. CD regrets the closure of the hall of whales, which she notes was as popular with the public as the dinosaur gallery: “maybe if we had shown the positive commentaries at the time to management and the people who made the decision to close [the hall of whales], they would have thought about it differently…”. Now, CD and RV were under the impression that higher management just was not aware of the emotional attachment of the Museum community to that particular exhibit. The key task for the future of the RBINS and the MNS then seems to make management and scientists aware of the (predominantly positive) feedback the Museum and the institute receive from the public. Showing them the emotional involvement of the audience, and making them aware of the fact that everyone at the RBINS can be an ambassador for the Museum, could already make a lot of ripples in the water without it having to cost too much in time, resources and staff. YS did note that the RBINS is in a period of drastic change, with permanent exhibit renewals and a remodeled organization chart. These changes “require a vision, a mission and a structure first, before clear objectives can arise from it – one of the operational objectives could be a social media policy that is clear for everyone.” In these times that are characterized by drastic changes in the 37
consumer-organization relationship, the question of attracting a social media expert or team becomes ever more relevant. An enormous amount of positive work has already been done by the communication department, and according to YS, management and direction are aware of the long term character of social media and the fact that social media and community building serve a higher purpose than just promotion. Nevertheless, the RBINS should consider what it means to have a social media manager on their team. Showing the positive impact and reactions to management on a regular basis could prove very impactful in that regard.

4.2.3 Pinterest and Instagram: concrete examples and strategies YS, RV and CD are very aware of the fact that each social media platform has its own characteristics, and so the content created should also be adapted to each channel. This is corroborated by EG, who strongly advises against sharing identical content across different platforms, and she emphasizes the need to “understand what you find to be most successful or engaging depending on the content you’re sharing [on each platform] and then do that”. The Field Museum does not have a Pinterest page, and EG did not see the utility of the platform in a museum context (arguing that the platform was too decorative, homey and DIY), until it was explained how the NHM in London organized theirs (cf. section 4.1.1). She saw a lot of potential in this approach, “because when you visit a museum, you want to find that community of other museum-goers, even if they’re not there with you or at the same time”. This is reminiscent of YS’ observations that social media could help in prolonging the museum experience even when the physical visit is over. EG thinks it’s a great idea to pin the user-generated content found on Instagram in special boards on Pinterest to help achieve this goal. YS thinks you could even fill a Pinterest board with all of the pictures taken in front of the wooden Iguanodon statue at Museum entrance. However, she deplores the fact that you would almost need a professional photographer to receive that content and to share it across platforms. This is where the power of co-creation steps in: a lot of these pictures are already up on Instagram; looking them up via location and repinning them would save a lot of work and budget. It would thus be an excellent example of co-creating added value with your museum visitors. Due to the difficulties arising when having to create content in two or three languages (as is often the case for the RBINS) and the fact that Pinterest is interesting internationally seen, it seems appropriate to use English on this platform, to which the RBINS respondents agreed. When asked which boards would be interesting, their intuitions on what would work largely corresponded to the categories found on the NHM Pinterest (cf. Table 3). However, to avoid confirming the Pinterest stereotypes brought up by EG, I would strongly advise to steer clear from (re)pinning things like recipes, or arts and crafts, unless there is a very specific connection with the RBINS. Good examples

would be the craft projects elementary school children make when visiting the museum, or a board containing artwork of the numerous artists and art students visiting the museum. The RBINS as well as the Field Museum are putting a great deal of effort in digitizing collections and making them available through an online database, a project with a lot of potential on social media. As EG puts it, there has got to be a social component to it, and ‘shareability’ is key. However, “most of those specimens are probably not visually appealing, and they probably don’t each have a compelling enough narrative to allow them to be really shareable” (EG). This is where the immense importance of storytelling comes in; all respondents acknowledge that this aspect cannot be underestimated. EG notes that “it doesn’t have to be the Iliad, it doesn’t have to be the Odyssey for every specimen, but I think some kind of anecdotal narrative, to make that specimen relatable, can be super compelling”. The RBINS could work with collection highlights or peculiar objects, with unique stories to accompany them. To involve RBINS researchers and scientists, they could be asked to present a specimen that holds a special importance to them because of its beauty, its scientific importance, a compelling story attached to it… Moreover, YS brought up a special Brussels-wide top piece collection that is planned in 2016 (to which the RBINS also contributes); this can be the excellent occasion to highlight the more memorable pieces or those with the most interesting story through social media. Adding a social media component to www.Ikhebeenvraag.be12 is, as YS agrees, a project that could be considered for the future. Again, this is an example where ambition and passion are limited by available resources – only one person coordinates this project, on a half-time basis. EG nevertheless sees a great deal of potential in the idea (“Oh yeah. Definitely, I would say 100 %”): “if you can adapt that to social media, if you can get the public connected with experts through either the Brussels Museum’s main social media channels, or by enabling your scientists to have their own social media channels and following, I think that would be fantastic”. She has experienced this with

different projects at the Field Museum, and she ascertains that “[the Field Museum’s] scientists love and enjoy and appreciate interacting with the public, and […] utilizing social media to make those connections more directly can be hugely successful.” This is yet another reason for a social media policy that invites the RBINS’ scientists to really engage with the audience on social media. RV sees a lot of potential in Instagram, noting that the use of hashtags connects the Museum’s own content with that of the visitors. Diving into the great collection of Instagram photos tagged with the Museum’s location could reveal what kind of content visitors like, and what hashtags they use when sharing it. Adding the Museum’s location to the Instagram content is then essential – EG even goes as far as to go back to Instagram pictures she has taken at the Field Museum before location tagging was an option, and tagging them with the Field Museum’s location, in the hopes that somebody will come in contact with the Field Museum that way. Storytelling is very important for Instagram; EG notes that whenever she is sharing museum content through Instagram, she tries “to highlight in two to three sentences what is really compelling about that specimen, why it caught [her] eye…” Another strategy she frequently uses is “to share a really compelling narrative that accompanies a really unimpressive-looking specimen”. This way, EG tries to “get [her] audience to think critically about these objects and to understand that every specimen we have is an individual, they all have their own story (but not all of those stories are equally incredibly engaging)”. It then seems essential to consider those collection pieces in particular that are unique, that have a unique story, and that can paint the RBINS and its Museum as a place where unique experiences and interactions can take place.

5 Conclusions, implications and recommendations The past decade has seen a great number of changes in client-organization relationship. Increasingly informed, networked, empowered and active consumers cause the organization to reconsider the value creation process, leading to strategies of co-creation, where value is co-created with consumers through meaningful experiences. The goal of this research paper was to assess the opportunities and pitfalls in the implementation of co-creational practices at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and its Museum, and what role social media platforms (Pinterest and Instagram in particular) can play in achieving this goal. Three research questions were used to structure the research. The conclusions and recommendations for each of the research questions are presented below.
5.1 Co-creation in general Research question 1 Which approach can best optimize strengths and opportunities and minimize weaknesses and threats when implementing co-creation in general at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels? The new consumer-organization relationship has been observed in the daily operations of the Museum. Especially on the Museum’s social media platforms, the greater dialogue and more direct contact with visitors is visible. The RBINS and its Museum are already doing great efforts to stimulate and incite this dialogue, and should keep on doing so with ever more engaging content. This way, the Museum can really present itself as a truly unique place where truly unique experiences can take place. A misconception about co-creation – that it costs a lot of time, resources and staff, efforts that are not evident in times where cuts have to be made due to austerity measures, is unjust. One of the strengths of co-creation is precisely in creating added value with your visitors. The key is to start small: projects that offer enough creative breathing space without exaggerating the investment asked on the part of the visitors, are ideal to show that the RBINS is fully prepared to

engage their visitors, creating a co-creational ‘feedback loop’ with an ever-growing community involvement as a result. Power sharing does not seem a concern, simply because it is not relevant at this initial stage. What is far more challenging, is getting everyone at the institution (made up of a wide array of departments, research groups…) engaged in these projects (cf. also research question 2).
Recommendations for co-creation in general
Focus on small-scale projects to introduce co-creation practices, as these offer the creative breathing space and the relatively low investment that, at this point, are most essential. Remember: “If it first you don’t succeed, try, try again”: co-creation is still a relatively new concept, and experimenting on a small scale can help prepare for bigger projects in the future.
Try to come up with unique and creative ways that go beyond mere promotion to engage the audience in future (citizen) science and exhibition projects, most notably with the Cold Case Bernissart project coming up.
Actively share these efforts on your social media platforms to make a limited project resonate with a large crowd, and actively engage people in a dialogue about museums, collections, and scientific topics.
5.2 Social media in general Research question 2 Which approach can best optimize strengths and opportunities and minimize weaknesses and threats in co-creating value with social media in general at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels? Already in the literature review, it became clear that the need for a sound social media strategy is absolutely essential. Analyzing the results of the interviews revealed that, now more than ever, this is relevant for the RBINS as well. An overarching strategy – or even a social media manager - is 43
necessary to achieve an impact as large as possible with limited staff, time and budget, and to accurately address the kind of visitor that is (and wants to be) informed, connected, empowered and active. Co-creation means involving not only your visitors, but also everyone working at your organization. It seems essential to inform the scientists and researchers, whose primary concern is not engaging an audience, of the beneficial effects social media and interaction with the community can have. An overarching institute-wide social media policy seems necessary to achieve this goal. The effects of social media and an engaging online presence are not immediately visible, or they are at least very difficult to accurately measure. A good approach to tackle this problem is to focus on qualitative results; anecdotal evidence of the creation of an engaged community has the potential to already open the eyes of colleagues, management and direction.
Recommendations for social media in general
Now that the RBINS is going through a period of reorganization, consider implementing an institute-wide social media strategy now. Limited budget and austerity measures may prevent the hiring of a social media or community management team (or even one expert), but nevertheless, this possibility must be looked into.
Be aware of what people post on sites like TripAdvisor. Summarizing the main concerns and remarks on a regular basis and forwarding them to the people that can solve them is a good way of using the new museum visitor to your advantage at a very concrete level.
Get the scientists, researchers and experts involved – they probably do not realize how much of an ambassador for the Institute and the Museum they can be if they engage through social media.
Don’t be afraid to be really enthusiastic, ‘nerdy’ and engaging. People are emotionally attached to exhibitions, so evoking emotional responses and making visitors relive the experience online is perfectly acceptable.
Find a distinct voice for each of the social media platforms, and try to create unique stories with it.

5.2 Pinterest and Instagram in particular Research question 3 Which approach can best optimize strengths and opportunities and minimize weaknesses and threats in co-creating value with Pinterest and Instagram at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels? The communication professionals at the Museum are very aware of the fact that content should be differentiated across social media platforms. Each platform has its own characteristics, and its own favored public. With regard to Pinterest, the NHM London’s approach with the pinning and re-pinning of content created by museum visitors is a perfect example co-creation at work, and could make the classic boards on the Museum’s architecture, the expositions, into something really special and engaging. Moreover, creating boards filled with visitor-created content illustrates the Museum’s willingness to engage with the visitors to co-create something together, further strengthening the community. Instagram can be used to reach that part of the audience (late teens, young adults) that the Museum traditionally had difficulties in reaching. Tagging is encouraged to reach a larger audience, and the focus should be on uniqueness and storytelling. A narrative should be created that paints the Museum as a place where unique experiences can be created.
Recommendations For Pinterest
Pinning user-generated content (location-tagged Instagram photos, drawings,) seems a viable approach for the RBINS as well, given the large amount of artists visiting the Museum, and the vast collection of location-tagged Instagram photos. Provide an incentive for people (e.g. a contest, like the NHM).
Draw inspiration from how the NHM London structures its boards.
Call upon artists and art students visiting the Museum to share their artwork through their own social media, accompanied by appropriate hashtags, so that it can be repinned. 45
For Instagram
Dive into the enormous collection of content tagged with the Museum’s location to find out what people are excited about, and in which ways they photograph the content. Discover how the Museum fits into the visitor’s own stories, and use these insights to create unique content that, although it can only be created by the RBINS itself, still reflects this shared experience.
Focus on storytelling, and create an engaging narrative for the Museum. Use specific as well as general tags to reach a wide audience. Use the digitizing of the Museum’s collections as an opportunity to highlight some of the top pieces, and to revive interest in some of the more forgotten specimens. Engage researchers and invite them to share their stories.
Look into adding a multimedia component to IkHebEenVraag.be, so that the ‘shareability’ of its content increases.

Appendix A. Interview guide for the RBINS interview Co-creatie in het algemeen 1.
In de lange geschiedenis van marketing en profilering van een organisatie zijn opvattingen over wat belangrijk is erg veranderd. Het idee dat nu sterk leeft is dat van co-creatie. Daarin staat de relatie tussen organisatie en ‘consument’ (bij gebrek aan een betere algemene term) centraal, in die zin dat men afstapt van het idee dat waarde enkel gecreëerd wordt door de organisatie, maar dat de consument even belangrijk is en er een wederzijdse relatie is. Consumenten worden op allerhande manieren actief betrokken bij de werking van de organisatie. Enkele fenomenen die daarmee gepaard gaan zijn onder andere: a.
De populariteit van sociale media;
b.
Een veel grotere aanspreekbaarheid van de organisatie (o.a. ook door sociale media);
c.
In het algemeen: samenwerken met de community die je rond jezelf opgebouwd hebt, in kleinere dan wel grotere mate.

Heb je die zaken ook al zelf ervaren in de laatste jaren bij het museum? Wat is er anders dan pakweg tien jaar geleden in de relatie tussen de museumbezoeker en het Museum?

Wordt bij het opstellen van tentoonstellingen onderzoek gedaan naar wat het publiek wil, wordt er samen gezeten met gemeenschappen/belangengroepen/… bij dat proces?

Denk je dat het in de toekomst mogelijk zou zijn om het aandeel of de rol van de museumbezoeker te vergroten bij het opstellen van

Een ander fenomeen dat we zien, zijn projecten die helemaal gefocust zijn op input van de consument. Denk je dat dergelijke projecten in de toekomst in het museum ook plaats kunnen vinden?

Er zijn natuurlijk verschillende niveaus van co-creatie. a.
‘Contribution’: waarbij er een beperkte inbreng van de bezoekers wordt gevraagd;
b.
‘Collaboration’: waarbij het museum actief samenwerkt met de bezoekers in een project;

Strikte co-creatie: waarin de agenda van de gemeenschap waarmee wordt samengewerkt
d.
(Hosting): waarbij het Museum ruimte verhuurt aan externe partijen of met hen samenwerkt.
Wat denk je dat het beste werkt in het huidige klimaat? 7.
Bij co-creatie is er volgens de wetenschappelijke literatuur altijd een soort van vrees voor power sharing. Organisaties lijken te aarzelen om een deel van de controle aan de bezoeker over te laten. Denk je dat dat een probleem kan zijn in het inslaan van dergelijke route?

Daarmee samenhangend: geloof je zelf dat die centrale rol van de consument ook geldt in de context van een instituut als het KBIN in het algemeen, en het museum in bijzonder?

Social Media in het algemeen 1.
Welke social mediakanalen hebben jullie op dit moment? Kan je per platform een kort woordje uitleg geven over opzet/strategie?

Heb je zelf al ondervonden dat de social media die er nu zijn een positieve impact hebben gehad in het Museum?

Heb je gemerkt dat het makkelijk is om mensen in dialoog te laten treden met het museum en te laten ‘participeren’ in de werking van het Museum, iets waar sociale media de platformen bij uitstek voor zijn?
4.
Vaak interpreteert men de rol van sociale media verkeerd als advertentie- en promotieplaats, uit een denken dat vooral op return-on-investment gebaseerd is, daarbij de werkelijke rol van sociale media negerend (door grotere participatie een duurzame relatie opbouwen met je community waarvan je de vruchten op lange termijn kan plukken). Voel je die spanning ook in het Museum?
Pinterest 1.
Pinterest werkt met boards met verschillende thema’s, waarop je zaken kunt pinnen. Wat zijn voor jou belangrijke thema’s waarrond je visueel een aantrekkelijk board kan opbouwen?

Het Museum of Natural History in London, bijvoorbeeld. Zij hebben met hun meer dan 100 000 volgers een sterke Pinterest uitgewerkt. Hun boards beslaan een grote verscheidenheid aan thema’s:

Het NHM London zet bijvoorbeeld ook producten uit de webshop online. Is er nu al een webshop voor het Museum, of denk je dat die er zou kunnen komen?

Pinterest is nog niet helemaal van de grond aan het komen in België, maar groeit goed en is aan een inhaalbeweging bezig (ongeveer dubbel zo snel als wereldwijd). Denk je dat het dan nuttig is om met die Pinterest ook een meer internationaal publiek aan te spreken? Waarom wel, waarom niet?

Veel musea stellen ook online hun collecties tentoon – of toch teasers ervan. We hebben erg veel fotomateriaal, denk je dat het interessant zou zijn om online versies van de permanente of tijdelijke tentoonstellingen online te zetten?

Veel musea gunnen een blik achter de schermen, en het Museum doet veel moeite om de collecties te digitaliseren (nu ook met de geplande aankoop van scanners). Denk je dat het interessant zou zijn voor het Museum om een platform te hebben dat je toelaat die collecties te ontsluiten per thema?

Ik heb gezien dat je in de Galerij van de Dino’s zelf ook tekeningen kan maken van dino’s – wordt daar op dit moment iets mee gedaan?
Instagram 1.
Instagram is aan het ‘boomen’. Er wordt heel erg veel gedeeld, en vaak moet je al creatief uit de hoek komen om boven de massa uit te komen. Natuurlijk is een Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen de ideale plaats om dergelijke content te creëren – haast alles is out-of-the-ordinary. Waar zie je zelf op het eerste zicht opportuniteiten bij dit medium?
2.
Is er ruimte voor projecten waarin Instagram-gebruikers bijvoorbeeld achter de schermen mogen gaan om zelf fotoreportages te maken? a.
Of kunnen we tekenaars (die vaak de museumstukken gebruiken als model voor hun tekeningen) op één of andere manier uitnodigen om hun werk te delen met ons?

Wat we zien dat werkt: eigenlijk gewoon de collecties voorstellen. Het Museum heeft een schat aan collecties die nog niet ontsloten zijn voor het publiek. Wat zeker werkt op Instagram: a.
Orginele content i. Creativiteit ii. Humor iii. Verhalen zijn van ontzettend groot belang (kijk naar de Facebookpagina ‘Humans of New York’, waar unieke verhalen van voorbijgangers in New York op heel erg veel likes kunnen rekenen) 1.
Idee: bijvoorbeeld medewerkers van het museum fotograferen met hun favoriete museumstuk, of een specimen met een verhaal aan verbonden, waarover ze dan kort vertellen (‘Humans of KBIN’). Meningen?

IkHebEenVraag.be is een project dat gecoördineerd wordt door het KBIN, en het is een perfect voorbeeld van hoe het publiek kan worden ingezet in het co-creatieproces. Ook het succes van zaken als Naturalis Leiden die je zelf foto’s laat opsturen, of de internationale #AskACurator day (dit jaar op 16 september 2015), zijn goede voorbeelden. Appendix B. Interview guide for the Field Museum interview Co-creation in general 1.
In part thanks to the rise of internet and social media, the past decade has seen the rise of a new type of museum visitor: one that is more informed, more empowered, more active, and more connected. A central notion is this co-creation, a view in which there exists a mutual relationship between a Museum and its visitor, with a lot of input from visitors, who are being actively involved in the Museum’s strategic approach: The rise and popularity of social media; a much greater dialogue of the Museum with its visitors, which I’ve also noticed in the Field Museum’s mission statement - in general: collaborations with the community which you have actively built up around your institution to create an active dialogue.

Did you notice this change yourself in Montana and now in the Field Museum, or in your transfer from one museum to the other? Do you think part of why the Field Museum attracted you and the Brain Scoop was the awareness of these changes?

Are the public and your visitor community or other stakeholders being actively involved in the decision process on new exhibitions that you know of, and to what degree?

Instagram is quite popular at the moment. Museums are ideal places, in my experience, for generating content that is out-of-the-ordinary. The Field Museum has its own Instagram account, and a lot of content concerning the Field Museum also appears on your own personal Instagram account. Are there certain types of content that work better than others?

I’veGotAQuestion.be is a project coordinated by the Museum in Brussels, where people can ask questions; these questions are then sent to scientists all over Belgium, who provide an answer. It’s been quite successful with almost 15 000 questions asked in a period of 6 years. Unfortunately, you can only ask written questions, so nothing in the sense of pictures/audio/video material, and no ways to plug-in into social media. Do you think there are opportunities there?

MD: Goedemiddag. Voor we van start gaan, zal ik even het opzet van het interview uitleggen. In het eerste deel gaan we in op het concept co-creatie, wat ik later verder ga toelichten. In het tweede deel ga ik enkele vragen stellen over social media in het algemeen bij het museum, en daarna zal ik ingaan op Pinterest en Instagram. De vragenlijst is redelijk uitgebreid, dus als we te ver afdwalen, of de vraag is niet echt relevant, geef een seintje, dan gaan we over naar de volgende vraag. Ik stel dan voor dat we aan het eerste deel beginnen, over co-creatie. In de lange geschiedenis van marketing en profilering van een organisatie zijn er heel wat ideeën geweest over wat nu belangrijk is. Met de opkomst van industrialisatie en massaproductie was het product- en productieconcept heel belangrijk, vanaf de fifties, sixties is marketing een belangrijke rol beginnen spelen, en vandaag de dag beginnen berdrijven door te hebben dat ze geen product, maar waarde verkopen. Die waarde kan je niet alleen creëren door je product of dienst zelf, maar ook door interactie met je klanten, met de consument. Een concept dat daarin sterk leeft is dat van co-creatie, in die zin dat men afstapt van het idee dat waarde enkel gecreëerd wordt door de organisatie zelf, maar dat de consument even belangrijk is, en dat er een wederzijdse relatie is tussen consument (of museumbezoeker, in ons geval) en de organisatie, het museum. Wat we zien is dat consumenten sterk worden betrokken bij de werking van de organisatie, van het museum, en enkele fenomenen die daarmee gepaard gaan zijn bijvoorbeeld de populariteit van sociale media, een veel grotere aanspreekbaarheid van die organisaties (vooral ook door sociale media), waarop je eigenlijk gewoon berichten kan posten gericht aan de organisatie, en in het algemeen samenwerken rond de community die je zelf hebt opgebouwd, in kleinere dan wel grotere mate, dus met minder of meer inspraak van uw bezoekers.

Mijn vraag aan jullie is nu: hebben jullie die zaken al ondervonden de laatste jaren in het Museum? Is er pakweg de laatste tien jaar iets veranderd in de relatie tussen de bezoeker en het Museum? YS: Ik ben hier al het langst (en Charlotte), dus ik zal misschien daarop antwoorden. Wat mij opvalt in het gebruik van sociale media (wat we dus tien jaar geleden niet deden) – het is nu een jaar of vijf denk ik dat we de eerste sociale media – de website is natuurlijk ook een instrument hé, maar ik echt sociale media, ik denk vijf of zes jaar geleden – is het feit dat de reactie van de bezoekers – van de virtuele bezoekers – veel directer is. Dus het wordt als het ware een forum – Facebookreacties, Twitter ook – dat wordt een forum, terwijl dat er vroeger misschien zelden eens een vraag gesteld werd aan de webmaster (via het e-mailadres van de webmaster). Mister Dino hadden we wel opgezet, wat vooral was om op vragen van kinderen te antwoorden. Dat hebben we nu ik met IkHebEenVraag.be kunnen oplossen. Maar mij valt op dat er een veel directer contact is met de bezoekers, vooral de virtuele bezoekers dan. Of ook na het bezoek, aan het echte Museum, dat ze al eens een tekening posten, of foto’s of zo. Dat is hetgeen dat mij wel opvalt, tussen nu en tien jaar geleden. CD: Avant les médias sociaux on avait aussi simplement directement des commentaires quand on allait sur des stands, à la fête de l’ Iris, à la fête de l’environnement, les gens nous donnait leur commentaires en général très enthousiastes. RV : da’s een vorm van co-creatie ook hé, mensen die op Instagram of Twitter een leuke foto zetten van hun bezoek – dat is eigenlijk allemaal promotie die we uiteindelijk zelf niet moeten doen, die hebben we uiteindelijk eigenlijk maar juist te versterken door te retweeten of te liken, of te stimuleren dat mensen dat doen. CD: quand j’ai commencé il y a quinze ans, on a travaillé sur une partie du site qui était vraiment pour les enfants, et on a essayé d’avoir des dessins des enfants, on a lancé un appel pour des dessins et en faite, on en n’a eu que 1, 2 ou 3, mais à l’époque c’était pas encore très à la mode. Maintenant, ce sont les cartes ‘mashups’ qu’on distribue à la fin des parcours gratuits, et on dit aux gens, voilà, avec ça vous pouvez prendre des chouettes photos, envoyez-les nous sur
[email protected], et on publiera les plus sympas. On publie toutes, en faite, mais bon. Et comme ça, on commence à avoir – on n’en a pas 20, encore, mais ça ne fait que quelques mois qu’on a publié le parcours avec ces cartes mashup. Donc, ce n’est pas non plus un résultat extraordinaire. Ça commence. YS : … En de tekeningen in de Dino-galerij, die op het scherm gemaakt worden, worden ook gepubliceerd op de website. Dus ze kunnen telkens gaan kijken van ‘ik was zo laat in de Dino-galerij, die dag’, dus ze kunnen hun tekeningen dan gaan opzoeken. Daar krijgen we eigenlijk niet zo veel reacties op. Het is de bedoeling dat ze gaan kijken naar hun tekeningen en die downloaden, maar verder hebben we daar eigenlijk nog niet zo veel interactie mee. CD: Mais c’est vrai qu’on a des visiteurs qui, spontanément, nous envoie des dessins ou des photos des Dinos,… Mais ça, on en a peut-être une dizaine par an. MD : wordt er bij het opstellen van tentoonstellingen specifiek ook gevraagd naar de mening van bezoekers, en wordt daar onderzoek naar gedaan op voorhand (wat bezoekers willen)? YS: Nee. Er zijn wel algemene enquêtes naar bezoekers toe, maar dat zijn imago-enquêtes om de tien jaar, en wat ze vonden van hun bezoek, hoe ze hier zijn terechtgekomen enz. en dat is een heel algemene vragenlijst over tevredenheid. Daarin is eigenlijk geen plaats naar suggesties voor volgende thema’s toe. Onlangs hebben we nu wel een kleine oefening gemaakt om de titel van een expo te testen. Bij de vorige expo’s hadden we dat gedaan in onze vriendenkring, dus niet echt via de Facebook-pagina naar de fans. Nu hebben we een kleine test gedaan – we hebben daar reactie op gekregen, maar niet overweldigend. Maar we hadden ook zelf wel suggesties gedaan in die richting, en ze daaruit dan laten kiezen, en ook opengelaten om zelf een suggestie te doen. Daar is een richting uit gebleken, die onze communicatie-indruk versterkte eigenlijk. Maar we hebben

nog niet helemaal de bezoekers of de fans van Facebook laten meekiezen. Dat zouden we wel kunnen doen, want vanuit marketingoogpunt is dat wel interessant. RV: Ik zag wel op Tumblr, nadat we de naam al gekozen hadden, dat dat nog heel sterk geliket en gereblogd bleef worden – niet dat er heel veel voorstellen werden gedaan, maar ik zag wel dat de gebruikers het tof vonden dat ze konden meedenken en mee beslissen over de naam van de tentoonstelling. NHM London heeft dat voor een toekomstige tentoonstelling gedaan, maar via een enquête (wel een vrij lange enquête, want je had meer dan tien minuten nodig om hem helemaal in te vullen), maar het is wel een idee om dat de volgende keer officiëler te doen, met een enquête, met enkele vragen, met het waarom. In Londen kon je hoofdtitel en ondertitel zelf samenstellen, ze hadden enkele voorstellen gedaan die je kon combineren en dan moest je uitleggen waarom je het de beste keuze vond – dat is wel een idee om dat de volgende keer te doen. Want die inspraak, je voelt dat dat wel leuk gevonden wordt. YS: En ik vond ook wel de reacties fijn om te horen, van, ze hebben daarom niet mee beslist over de titel, of al dan niet een suggestie gedaan, maar iedereen zei van ‘ah, het spreekt ons aan en we gaan komen’. Dus dat is bijna belangrijker dan die test zelf. Dat het onderwerp wel aanspreekt. RV: en alle mensen die mee reageren hebben meteen al een band met die tentoonstelling… YS: … ja, zo van da’s die tentoonstelling… RV: … waar ik de naam voor mee gekozen heb. Dus je geeft inhoudelijk al weer waarover de tentoonstelling zal gaan, en je creëert er een band mee bij de stemmers. YS: dus de mensen die eventueel gereblogd of geretweet of geshared hebben, dan creëer je een kleine community die die expo volgt, zo een beetje van ‘da’s onze expo, en daar komen we graag naartoe’. CD: juste avant l’ouverture de l’expo ‘Baby Animals’ tous les jours on mettait sur Facebook une nouvelle photo d’un bébé animal de la salle, en train de dire « encore X fois dormir, on doit encore me mettre dans ma vitrine,…» des petites choses comme ça, et on a vu que les gens suivait de plus en plus, mais voila, c’est un teste qu’on a fait pendant – je sais plus si c’était une semaine ou dix jours. Et donc, le nombre des gens qui suivait et voyait ces posts grandissait de jour en jour. YS : Een Making Of is altijd een goed idee om te doen, onder welke vorm dan ook – en de sociale media zijn daar ook uitermate geschikt voor. CD: Pour la galerie de l’homme, Reinout a aussi fait ça en photo, sur Twitter j’ai vu, et tu as mis des photos des grands personnages qui devait encore être placés dans la salle RV : haja, juste une photo, CD : -oui, juste une photo, et il y avait un de ses commentaires qui disait « ah, chouette, j’ai hâte de voir ce que ça va donner ; je viendrai dès l’ouverture ». Mais c’est UN commentaire. MD : mais quand même, les autres gens vont lire ça… YS : ça aide à la promotion… CD : et le monsieur qui a commenté est venu visiter effectivement l’exposition parce que lui-même il a encore fait des photos cinq ou six semaines après, donc il est venu. MD : Er zijn natuurlijk verschillende niveaus van co-creatie. Je hebt contribution, waarbij er een beperkte inbreng van de bezoekers wordt gevraagd (bijvoorbeeld bij het beslissen van de naam); Collaboration: waarbij het museum actief samenwerkt met de bezoekers in een project en hen heel veel inspraak geeft in het project; Strikte co-creation: waarin de agenda van de gemeenschap waarin je je bevindt en de bezoekers die je hebt

waarmee wordt samengewerkt en waar je van daaruit begint te werken rond een thema. (Hosting): waarbij het Museum ruimte verhuurt aan externe partijen of met hen samenwerkt (wat nu ook al gebeurt). Denk je dat er bijvoorbeeld voor collaboration of strikte co-creation ruimte is in een museum als dit? YS: Ik denk niet… Misschien voor het bepalen van een thema, dat zouden we nog via een enquête kunnen doen of zo, thema eventueel wel. Maar wij moeten ook altijd zien – als we een expo aankopen, bijvoorbeeld, gewoon: welke thema’s zijn er ter beschikking? Het gaat niet alleen om wat de vraag is, maar er moet met zoveel dingen rekening gehouden worden – met de kostprijs, de beschikbaarheid, van welk museum komt het, moet er een aanpassing gebeuren enz. Dus ik denk, qua collaboration… Contribution is mogelijk, maar collaboration bijvoorbeeld wel bij een kleine expo zoals de wedstrijd-expo van Le Soir, waarbij de krant het thema van een tekeningwedstrijd bepaalt, en wij dan die tekeningen tentoonstellen in onze context, dus als het over dino’s ging, in de Dinogalerij. Dat hebben we een paar keer gedaan, maar dat is vrij groot – ja, iets tussen hosting en collaboration, waarbij er dan via een mediapartner wel een thema mee bepaald wordt. Maar dat zijn kleine, onafhankelijke expootjes die niet passen in onze programmatie. MD: Dat kwam ook vaak terug in de literatuur – dat musea eigenlijk vooral met co-creatie werken voor kleinere thema’s die meer beperkt zijn in de tijd, niet voor grote expo’s en permanente tentoonstellingen en zo – maar dat het dus eigenlijk vooral kleine projecten zijn die niet zo erg veel moeten kosten, bijvoorbeeld die tekeningen of kunstwerken en zo. YS: Ja. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld ook vorige zomer buiten een expo geweest rond archeologie. Zij hebben dat dan zelf opgezet, en dat is wel in samenwerking met enkele wetenschappers van hier. Maar het is toch vooral de vereniging van archeologie die zich daar heeft achter gezet. En het was niet alleen van hieruit, het was een samenwerking tussen verschillende partners. Via de brug van andere verenigingen of mediapartners. Met een tussenpersoon of tussenvereniging – dat gebeurt meestal, maar echt individuele mensen die hier dan hun eigen expo komen maken, dat is nog niet gebeurd. Ofwel een artiest die iets voorstelt, maar dan is het ook wel altijd van ‘past het in de context’. Ah, bijvoorbeeld wel de graffiti van de dino op onze gevel, was een opdracht rond de renovatie van de Dinogalerij toen die werd opgezet in 2007… CD: non, mais par contre, le jour qu’on arrivera à faire un projet à crowdfunding… Ca, je pense que… YS : ja, dat kunnen we beschouwen als co-creation. CD: mais finalement, sur les réseaux sociaux, quand nos followers retweet ou partage ou… C’est aussi une sorte de contribution. MD : oui, bien sûr, tout à fait. CD : … Ils font la publicité… MD : oui, c’est sûr. YS : contribution, oui. Ça on fait beaucoup. Mais collaboration niet echt, he. CD : pour des projets spécifiques, regarde par exemple Mais ça c’est pas la partie musée c’est plutôt la partie institut. Donc, il y a Carole Paleco qui s’occupe souvent des projets européens, qui a contacté l’association du quartier et d’autres ASBLs Bruxelloises pour monter un projet dans le Parc Léopold, lié à la biodiversité et à l’eau. Et effectivement, là, tous ensemble, ils ont monté quelque chose. Mais de nouveau, c’est avec des groupements de citoyens, des ASBLs, avec des comités de quartier. Ce n’est pas avec des personnes – oui, ce n’est pas avec des individues. Et c’est effectivement un projet bien défini. YS : daarbij was het al meer dan contribution, dan collaboration.

MD: Ja, want uiteindelijk hoeft dat niet altijd met individuele bezoekers te zijn natuurlijk he, in de community rond het Museum heb je ook andere vzw’s, buurtcomités, groeperingen van individuele stakeholders – mediapartners ook, waarmee je kan samenwerken natuurlijk… YS: en zoals bij Museum Night Fever is het soms een gemeenschap van artiesten of drie, vier individuele kleinere groepjes die dan samenkomen, ook de dansertjes van Ocean Day – ja, dat kan je uiteindelijk wel beschouwen als samenwerking natuurlijk. CD: mais tu cherches des exemples sur des médias sociaux ou en général? MD : D’abord en général et ensuite sur les médias sociaux, oui. Parce que, vous avez vu le mail, je pense que c’était d’Isabelle, qui agissait du projet de Provincie Limburg et la guerre mondial (facebookprofielen van mensen die indertijd leefden, voor de duidelijkheid) – ça c’est un projet qui est en faite très co-creatif sur les médias sociaux parce que les gens peuvent contribuer ses expériences, et le projet est en faite des réseaux sociaux pour les gens qui sont décédés dans la guerre… CD : mais le concept à la base ce n’est pas en faite la co-création, c’est plutôt arriver à ce que les gens fassent des commentaires, et partagent, et … MD : oui, mais en faite ça c’est une forme de co-création aussi he… En ‘t is hem vooral ook te doen net om die commentaren,… YS: storytelling, he… MD: ja, voila, en de sociale media gebruiken eigenlijk niet om de tentoonstelling zélf in het licht te zetten, maar eigenlijk om een soort van community te creëren met uw potentiële bezoekers, door eigenlijk ‘echte’ profielen van die mensen te gaan onderhouden. CD: on cherchait pour les médias sociaux un support qui permettait de rassembler aussi bien les photos qu’on fait nous avec les photos de nos visiteurs. On avait commencé avec Jiska (qui travaillait ici avant Reinout) – c’était sur Flickr, c’est possible ? … YS : ja RV : uhu CD: … Mais finalement, on ne l’utilise pas beaucoup, mais peut-être que Pinterest sera un bon support pour ça. Parce que, effectivement, on va commencer avec nos photos, et puis on va passer un petit peu de temps à aller voir d’autres pages Pinterest, peut-être aussi des visiteurs, et ils vont peuvoir partager plus avec nous, on va chercher chez eux, et ça c’est un bon support. YS : Ja, vooral in foto’s zie ik dat ook op Pinterest-borden: eigen foto’s, foto’s van andere collega-musea, foto’s van de bezoekers zelf… CD: Sur YouTube - on a un channel YouTube – pour le moment, avec essentiellement des vidéos à nous, et on a quand même un petit rubrique avec des photos de visiteurs. Bon, elle est toute petite, mais voila.
MD : Bij co-creatie is er volgens de wetenschappelijke literatuur altijd een soort vrees van power sharing. Organisaties lijken te aarzelen om een deel van de controle aan de bezoeker over te laten. Denk je dat dat een probleem kan zijn in het inslaan van dergelijke route? Dat het misschien bij sommige mensen in de museumwerking in het verkeerde keelgat kan schieten, om het zo cru te zeggen? CD: Je crois que par rapport au quatre niveaux que vous donnait, on n’arrivera jamais à faire niveau deux et trois, ça c’est certain. Maintenant, ce qu’il y a aussi, c’est que – il y a plusieurs services, qui doivent être d’accord pour faire la co-création, et peut-être que c’est déjà pas toujours facile à l’intérieur du Musée entre

les services. Ces services plús des gens extérieurs… Oui, le choix du titre, ça pourrait peut-être se faire. Mais dans le contenu d’un expo… Pas sûr. Il faudra alors que vraiment toutes les équipes soient conscientes de l’intérêt de faire de la co-création. Mais là, il y aura un travail important à faire avant. Actuellement, je pense pas que ce sera faisable. YS : Het is natuurlijk ook zo dat we in een bepaald framework moeten werken. We zijn verbonden aan budget, aan opdrachten uitschrijven als je boven een bepaald bedrag zit… CD: et timing! YS: timing, en dat is allemaal vrij institutioneel, en we proberen dat zelf tot een minimum te beperken en het werkbaar te houden binnen onze werkgroep, maar we blijven allemaal professionelen onder mekaar, en we werken ook met vaste mensen, dus als je zou zeggen van, we werken af en toe met onafhankelijke grafici of zo, dan zouden we op een bepaald moment erover kunnen denken van ‘ah, we gaan via collaboration aan grafici extern vragen om een soort wedstrijd te doen of weet ik veel, maar dat zie ik nog niet gebeuren in de komende jaren. We zijn gewoon te beperkt, en we moeten binnen een bepaald framework werken, helaas, door de beperkingen in budget en zo. MD: En denk je dat dat dan anders zou zijn met privé-musea, die niet gebonden zijn aan een overheid – het Museum is uiteindelijk natuurlijk een federale instelling… YS: mja… ik denk gewoon dat vanaf dat je met een aantal mensen werkt, en de organisatie groter wordt, dat het moeilijker werkbaar is om er externen bij te halen –want ik denk dat privéorganisaties ook gebonden zijn aan hun beperkingen. ’t Is veel moeilijker te controleren en binnen een bepaalde timing, en planning, en budget te houden. Want als mensen heel enthousiast beginnen te freewheelen en brainstormen en weet ik veel, en die komen met goede ideeën, en je moet dan telkens zeggen “ja, maar…” door personeelsgebrek, of budget dat ontoereikend is, of zo… Die gaan dat ook niet gratis doen, natuurlijk, en die gaan een bepaalde bijdrage vragen aan een community - bijvoorbeeld om een titel te kiezen, of dat kan zelfs iets verder gaan. Maar ik denk dat dat niet vrijblijvend blijft, als daar niets aan vast hangt, natuurlijk. RV: inderdaad CD : Le musée de Paris a fait – a lancé il y a quelques années un projet de citizen science, et donc l’idée, c’était que partout en France, quand des gens faisaient une observation – d’un papillon, d’un oiseau particulier – ils allaient sur le site du Muséum de Paris sur une partie spécifique, et ils indiquaient leurs observations. Je sais que, par example, Natagora et Natuurpunt aussi font ces choses. YS : Ja, vlindertellingen en zo hé. CD: ça pourrait peut-être quelque chose aussi qu’on pourrait faire à l’avenir, mais de nouveau, c’est pas lié à une exposition. MD : Mais ça ne doit pas être lié à une exposition… YS : … Ik zie het ook eerder in die wetenschappelijke richting… MD: … citizen science is een heel goed voorbeeld van hoe je met je community meer waarde (letterlijk zelfs bijna in de zin van wetenschappelijke data) kan creëren, natuurlijk. YS: en dat doen we wel met ValkenVoorIedereen.be natuurlijk, de blog van de valken is heel interactief, mensen zijn er ook emotioneel bij betrokken. Dus we zien dan ook op Facebook en Twitter en op de blog dat er reacties komen. Maar ’t is nog vrij beperkt. ’t Is geen forum. RV: ’t is geen inhoudelijke… ’t voegt niets toe aan onze inhoud. Tenzij ze waarnemingen doen die Didier (projectcoördinator) niet gezien heeft…

YS: …ja, inderdaad… RV: …zo van, ‘ik heb gezien dat de vogel op dat moment zijn jongen voedt’… YS: … of hij was niet meer te zien via de camera… dat zijn ook beperkte reacties, minimale interactie. RV: bijvoorbeeld het Wandelende Takkenproject met de basisscholen – daar hebben ze wel inhoudelijk het gedrag en het uiterlijk – dus daar hebben ze wel inhoudelijk een meerwaarde geleverd – het is een citizen science project, en educatief. YS: … en het is ook uitgemond in een moment waarop de klassen elkaar ontmoeten, en ook de wetenschappers, en konden zien dat hun bijdrage echt wel relevant is. RV: … en er is wel belangstelling… YS: …belangstelling in de pers geweest, ja… RV: … en er was belangstelling, ook van andere scholen, om ook zo’n terrarium te krijgen. Maar ook weer, tijd en planning, en ik denk ook dat Jérôme en Joachim drie klassen per jaar aankunnen, om dat te doen, zelfs al is de vraag groter en de wil er wel om dat breder te doen maar ze kunnen gewoon niet. YS: want zo bij co-creatie, en hoe ver je er ook in gaat, er zal altijd een omkadering nodig zijn. En ja, iedereen is wel enthousiast en zo, maar door beperking van middelen blijft dat tot die tests beperkt – en dat is dan heel sympathiek in de media overgekomen ook, waardoor er nog meer mensen op de hoogte zijn. Er is bijvoorbeeld ook de naam van een wandelende tak aan de presentator Lieven Scheire gegeven, dus dat is ook een soort van… samenwerking, communityvorming. Bijvoorbeeld met een medium of zo hé. Het zijn maar kleine voorbeelden, da’s nu een superklein voorbeeld, maar er kan bijvoorbeeld samengewerkt worden met een medium om in een bepaald programma echt wel inbreng te hebben van kijkers of luisteraars. Maar de omkadering is zeer belangrijk, en daar ontbreekt het ons aan. RV: … want ik denk dat als je een Citizen Science of co-creatieproject opstart dat puur online verloopt, waar er geen menselijke coördinator is waarmee je kunt interageren, dat de – ja, goesting om dat nog verder te doen dan ook wel verdwijnt. YS: je moet ook wel een aanspreekpunt hebben hé, ’t moet toch op zijn minst een forum zijn of je moet toch antwoord krijgen op de vragen of… En da’s heel intensief, om dat op te volgen. Bijvoorbeeld voor de valken, die blog bijhouden en ook nog eens reageren en ook nog eens live ter plekke zijn om die mensen te ontvangen… Want allez, dat is ook een belangrijk aspect: dat live aspect van ValkenVoorIedereen – die twee maanden aan de kathedraal, dat is echt een ontmoetingsplek voor iedereen, niet alleen virtueel, maar ook live – dus dat is een zeer goed voorbeeld. RV: Ja, hetzelfde met die klassen he – dat moment, die ene dag dat ze de wetenschappers kunnen ontmoeten – die zijn ook wel naar de klas gekomen – maar dat co-creëren moet menselijk, face-to-face ook… YS: … Ja, dat blijft de aandacht behouden he, want als je zo’n dingen niet doet dan sterft dat een stille dood. Dus jammer genoeg blijft dat beperkt tot zo enkele keren en keuzes te maken om op een jaar zo twee, drie momenten te voorzien of te promoten. CD: Je pense qu’avec le Cold Case Bernissart, on va pouvoir faire quelque chose d’important, d’interessant. Pour le moment, Reinout a écrit un article, un ‘news’, on l’a mis en ligne, et puis, il en a fait la promo sur Facebook, et il y avait énormément de réactions, énormément de vues, et pourtant pour le moment on a juste dit : voilà, il y an un projet où on va réétudier les iguanodons pour mieux connaître les conditions dans lesquelles ils sont morts. Et le projet de Limbourg qu’ Isabelle nous a envoyé, je l’ai forwardé au Pascal Godefroit qui s’occupe du projet de Bernissart, en lui disant que c’est probablement quelque chose qu’on peut utiliser. Notamment parce que dans le projet, ils vont aussi réétudier toutes les relations entre les scientifiques

à l’époque, parce qu’il y eu beaucoup de – ils n’étaient pas d’accord sur plein de choses, donc le storytelling façon Limbourg, c’est vraiment quelque chose qu’on pourrait faire sur cette thématique. Mais pour le moment, j’ai juste transféré, on va voir si ça peut donner quelque chose. MD : Tenzij er nog andere opmerkingen zijn, stel ik voor dat we overgaan naar het volgende gedeelte – social media in het algemeen, eerder descriptief van aard om eigenlijk gewoon een beetje een globaal zicht op social media te krijgen. Het meeste weet ik daar wel al van, maar dat is zodat wie de thesis leest er ook een zicht op krijgt, natuurlijk. Welke social mediakanalen hebben jullie op dit moment? Kan je per platform of in het algemeen een kort woordje uitleg geven over opzet en strategie? RV: Momenteel hebben we vier social mediakanalen. Twitter gebruiken we om de community van wetenschappers en museumprofessionals te bereiken… CD: … journalistes?... RV: journalisten ook wel, alhoewel ik dat nog niet echt gevoeld heb op Twitter. Maar bloggers ook – science bloggers, allez, meer de internationale community van wetenschappers… YS: … en de amateurs: paleontologen vooral… RV: ja, amateurpaleontologen, PhD students,… En ik gebruik het dus om ons eigen nieuws te verspreiden, gewoon interessants in het algemeen uit ons onderzoeksinstituut en museum, en ik gebruik het ook om nieuws dat in ons bereik ligt, dat in onze domeinen ligt, wetenschapsnieuws heet van de naald, om dat te tweeten. En dat is eigenlijk om die thema’s – onze thema’s – een beetje in de verf te zetten internationaal. YS: en ook, dat geeft de mogelijkheid om de activiteiten van de andere musea te volgen. RV: ja YS: dus in het volgen op Twitter ben je dan ook op de hoogte van de topics in de andere musea. RV: en we doen ook mee aan populaire hashtags, zoals FossilFriday, ThrowbackThursday, als het Museum Week is dan doen we daar ook aan mee omdat dat die community van Natural History Museums wel vergroot, en dat we daar onze positie als, volgens CNN, derde beste dinomuseum van de wereld *gelach* MD: ja, natuurlijk… RV:… dat we ons toch laten gelden. Facebook gebruiken we meer voor de families, de bezoekers die hier over de vloer komen, om meer de gezinnen te bereiken. Da’s ook meer een gezinssfeer… CD: en meer Museum… RV: ja, meer het Museum. YS: en ook, Facebook is een community om evenementen te volgen, het evenementieel publiek, we zien ook vaak dat er – bijvoorbeeld voor de Museum Night Fever, of de Nocturnes, dat er daarvoor op Facebook ook wel plaats is. RV: sinds vorige zomer hebben we ook een Tumblr-blog – da’s meer om het jonge volk te bereiken, en ook meer de ‘savvy’ people, het jonge, geïnteresseerde publiek. Ik gebruik het eigenlijk voor van alles, voor behind the scenes, voor nieuws, voor leuke foto’s – ook voor die Throwback Thursday, Fossil Friday, daar kan eigenlijk ongeveer alles op. Ik gebruik het ook als blog, als er een wetenschapper op expeditie gaat. Op onze eigen website is dat dan moeilijk om daar een blog over temaken, maar Tumblr is dan wel weer goed; omdat dat ook meteen sociaal genetwerkt is, met die hashtags, kun je eigenlijk mensen die mariene biologie volgen, of die alles ivm het onderzoeksschip Belgica of met RV Sonne volgen te bereiken. Ja, dat zijn kleine nichepubliekjes – maar die bereik je wel zo met die Tumblr, en op uw website zouden ze je nooit gevonden hebben, maar op Tumblr wel. Sinds kort – sinds een paar maanden – hebben we ook Instagram, voor de hipsters – en ook vooral

om de behind the scenes – foto’s, mooie nostalgische foto’s te geven en ook eigenlijk om de bezoekers, want de bezoekers – die zitten ook op Instagram, en die posten ook heel veel op Instagram en die zoeken dan vaak als ze zelf hashtaggen ‘Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen’ of ‘Muséum des Sciences Naturelles’. En dan kijken ze weleens op die hashtag wat er nog allemaal verschenen is. En ik maak dan altijd als ik behind the scenes doe van onderzoekers dan zien ze ook wat er hier achter de Museummuren zit. Dus ik probeer zo’n beetje ons instituut en ons Museum op Instagram te laten samenkomen – dat de ene naar de andere verwijst – want het is heel moeilijk om het Museum en het Instituut… YS: …samen te brengen hé… RV: … ‘doen we het onder het merk ‘Museum’ of doen we het onder het merk ‘Instituut’, en is het Museum daar dan een satelliet van?’ YS: maar de sociale media maken een mooie link tussen de twee. RV: ja YS: en ook bijvoorbeeld, diegenen die hier komen tekenen, da’s vrij veel, en we willen die tekeningen dan wel tonen als we mogen of als zij zelf posten of zo, en dan met de hashtags werken hé. Da’s misschien ook nog een idee voor Instagram. RV: ja, die sketches ja YS: en voor Pinterest, misschien een board maken met tekeningen. MD: ja, daar had ik ook al aan gedacht. RV: Ik heb intussen een Pinterest aangemaakt hé, twee seconden geleden. (lacht) de druk werd te groot CD: et on a aussi un YouTube. Mais on n’utilise… RV : eigenlijk zou dat ook… Maar ja, dat is zó arbeidsintensief om echt mooie, afgewerkte video’s te hebben, zoals New York die met hun Shelf Life fantastische episodes gemaakt hebben, maar da’s zo veel werk – we zouden dat ook graag doen hé, maar… YS: ja, maar we hebben nu onlangs bijvoorbeeld in de Galerij van de Mens een filmpje bijvoorbeeld om er dan mee aan twee awards deel te nemen, dat is ook iets wat op YouTube kan. RV: ja, dat staat op YouTube en dat gebruiken we dan ook voor alle andere… YS:… en een tv-spotje ook. MD: en heb je gemerkt dat sociale media een positieve impact hebben in het Museum in het algemeen, of in het Instituut? RV: da’s moeilijk meetbaar, dus je zou moeten enquêtes doen van ‘hoe ben je hier geraakt’, ‘wat vind je van onze sociale media’, ‘wat vind je van dat en dat en dat medium’ – om dat echt te weten te komen, moet je dat gaan meten met een enquête, denk ik. YS: …ja, een specifieke enquête… RV: een héél specifieke enquête, dus we weten dat niet, maar ik voel wel dat dat werkt, dat dat toch bijdraagt aan het soort museumgevoel – allez, je hebt het gevoel dat je hebt als je het Museum bezocht hebt, maar daar rond kun je dan dat museumgevoel nog wat langer laten doorwerken via die sociale media – ik denk wel dat dat zeker bijdraagt. CD: il y a peut-être aussi le fait que nous, on ne partage pas assez avec les autres membres de l’institut ce qui se passe sur les réseaux sociaux. On a des gens de l’institut qui nous suivent, mais ils sont pas si nombreux que ça non plus. Ais oui, on en a qui nous suivent quand même.

RV : mais tout le monde le voit – il ne ‘like’ pas tout le temps, mais ils ont vu. Ik heb de indruk dat dat intern… dat ze dat wel leuk vinden, dat dat de fierheid en de trots wel verhoogt als de Facebook-pagina goed werkt, en als er veel fans zijn en als Twitter een beetje mee is… Want dat verhoogt… YS: … we zouden eigenlijk een oproep kunnen doen aan ons personeel, als alles goed op punt staat, van: like zelf onze Facebookpagina, deel wat we doen. Want natuurlijk, het gevaar van sociale media – je moet een interne sociale mediapolitiek hebben hé, en dat hebben we niet expliciet. We kunnen bijvoorbeeld niet expliciet zeggen van: tijdens de kantooruren mag er niet op Facebook gegaan worden of… Wij doen het professioneel, dus voor ons is het wel onze job – en ik merk ook tijdens de pauze – en ook tijdens andere uren, allez, je hebt dat niet echt onder controle, als dat niet officieel is vastgelegd. En ik denk dat we dat eerstdaags toch wel moeten doen, via directie… RV: … bedoel je de manier waarop ze sharen, of… YS: … nee gewoon, of ze mógen, dat is gewoon niet officieel. RV: iedereen heeft toch een smartphone, en iedereen kan toch… CD: oui, mais les gardiens, normalement, ils ne peuvent pas pendant qu’ils travaillent… YS : terwijl ze werken ja. Maar tijdens hun pauzes wel. Dus ik merk wel dat tijdens de pauzes, dat er gedeeld wordt en… CD: … mais je pensais aussi, p.e., à TripAdvisor, on reçoit régulièrement des super commentaires, mais aussi dans les commentaires il y a souvent un petit point négatif – ‘les toilettes ne fonctionnaient plus’, ‘les interactifs dans cette salle là étaient en panne’, ‘le Muséum est très chouette mais il y a quand même quelques salles ou les textes sont encore seulement en Néerlandais et en Français et nous on est Anglais’ – et peut-être, la direction générale, la D.O. Public devrait voir ça plus souvent aussi. Ça pourrait lui aider à voir ce qui ne marche pas. YS : ja, update van de maand, of zo, of een update met alle reacties. CD: par exemple: on a ferme la salle des baleines, pour pouvoir créer une nouvelle galerie. On avait avant la fermeture de la salle de baleines autant de commentaires positifs, sur la galerie de baleines que sur la galerie des dinos. C’étaient les deux choses pour lesquelles les gens venaient au Muséum. Mais il a quand même décidé de fermer la salle des baleines. Et peut-être, si on avait montré les commentaires là, à la direction, aux équipes qui ont décidé de la fermer, peut-être qu’ils auraient pensé les choses autrement. Mais donc… RV : … ah, dju (lacht)… CD : … non, mais c’est – ils auraient compris que les gens étaient émotionnellement attachés à ces baleines. Parce que pour le moment, je ne crois pas qu’ils se rendent compte. Mais ça c’est peut-être – oui, on aurait dû leur montrer… RV : … ce qui se passe… YS : …ja, en geen schrik hebben van dat emotionele aspect, ik denk dat dat ook belangrijk is (instemming van anderen) qua bezoekerstevredenheid en zo. MD: en heb je daar al veel last van ondervonden –zo die… zoals je nu zei, de directie die niet zo mee is in het verhaal, of ook met het feit dat we een Museum en een onderzoeksinstituut hebben, die link die zo wat voor strubbelingen zorgt? YS: er is altijd een institutioneel aspect, een theoretisch aspect, van ‘wat is onze visie, onze missie, wat zijn onze objectieven en in welk kader werk je’… Dat is niet altijd even duidelijk omdat dat ook in de loop van de jaren verandert. En we zitten nu in een proces waarin er echt wel serieus nagedacht wordt: het organigram is

veranderd, de structuur is aan het veranderen, en je moet eerst een visie en een missie hebben, en een structuur, voordat daar objectieven uit voortkomen, en één van de objectieven, en dan de operationele objectieven, zou kunnen zijn van een sociale mediapolitiek opstellen, die duidelijk is voor iedereen. Want het is ook niet expliciet verboden hé – er wordt gewoon heel flou over gedaan – allez, iedereen doet maar zijn zin. Maar zolang dat dat professioneel blijft, wordt het gebruik toegelaten. ’t Is niet zo dat we bijvoorbeeld 20 negatieve reacties hebben van medewerkers intern, die zeggen van “ ’t is hier niet leuk om te werken” of zo – integendeel, ik heb nog altijd de indruk dat de mensen die hier werken nog altijd een goede ambassadeur zijn op de sociale media. MD: … Maar misschien nog niet doorhebben dat ze een goede ambassadeur kunnen zijn op die sociale media… YS: ja, en ik denk dat we dat positieve nog veel beter kunnen benadrukken, en dat we geen schrik moeten hebben van het negatieve. Dat is ook de politiek van de directrice. Ze is er zich van bewust, en ze weet het, en ’t is iets van interne communicatie, maar dat moet ook wel goed doorgepraat worden van ‘wat zijn de consequenties’ – de consequenties van niet expliciet een social media manager te hebben, of een social media management team: het komt er bij, bij het werk, en OK – Reinout en Charlotte doen dat, en sommige anderen doen dat privé, en delen of zo – maar niet zoals in andere grote musea, is er geen echt team. Een team dat die interne lijn doortrekt, ook via interne communicatie, en van de medewerkers echte ambassadeurs zou maken. Dus we zouden daar veel verder in kunnen gaan – en we doen wat we kunnen, en ik vind het over het algemeen zeer positief van hoe het verloopt. En ik denk ook niet dat we schrik moeten hebben van de eventuele negatieve consequenties van sociale media. RV:… maar nee, tuurlijk niet… CD: en tout cas, pour le moment, ce ne sont jamais que des commentaires positifs, hé. Et c’est chouette parce qu’on a par exemple des gardiens, qui nous suive – pas mal de gardiens en tout cas – et quelques scientifiques. Et ils likent tout le temps, c’est très chouette comme retour. YS : en er zijn er ook die foto’s delen, hé… RV: ja ja… YS: nog niet zo veel, en we zouden daar echt iets van kunnen maken ook. Dus er zijn veel mogelijkheden, maar… we moeten keuzes maken natuurlijk. RV: en ook: hoe meer sociale media er bijkomen, hoe meer je dat in het oog moet houden hé YS: ja, nu is het wat verdeeld. RV: dat je Throwback Thursday dan op alle media dan post… MD: ja, tuurlijk ja… RV: dus we moeten zien welk sociaal medium dat het sop… allez, de kool waard is. Want je kan ook heel veel tijd steken in iets dat MD: … niet relevant is of… YS: …of dat door drie mensen gevolgd wordt. Maar ik denk ook niet te rap opgeven, want… Niet met iets beginnen, en dan na een halfjaar zeggen van… Of bij elke stagiair die we hebben zeggen van ‘ah, we gaan dat even opzetten’ en dan wordt dat niet meer vervolgd. Ik denk dat we echt wel de middelen moeten… niet verdelen, maar binden. MD: en in die sociale mediapolitiek, zie je daar dan ook plaats voor – zoals er nu al een beetje is, maar niet zo goed uitgewerkt – een strategie? Een overkoepelende strategie voor alle sociale media?

RV: wat ik nu vooral zie bij andere musea, is dat je met inhoud moet imponeren, en niet met duizend keer te zeggen dat je de grootste dinogalerij hebt – tóón het, en vertel iets over die dinogalerij. En dan zullen de mensen wel zeggen van “ja inderdaad, wat interessant”… Met de perfecte foto en de perfecte slogan, tja… YS: ’t is geen promotie… RV: …’t is dat… YS: ’t is imponeren met wat we hebben en daar echt wel fier op zijn… RV: en niet bang zijn om een beetje, laat ik zeggen, ‘nerdy’ over te komen – als jij… MD: …want da’s uiteindelijk ons publiek… RV: ja, voilà, als je over een bepaalde Ichthyosaurus gewoon vertelt wat er over te vertellen valt, ja… je moet niet bang zijn om inhoud… om wat dieper te gaan, of… MD: Ja, want dat is ook wel een probleem dat in de literatuur van wetenschappers en museummedewerkers vaak terugkomt, dat dat heel moeilijk is om verkocht te krijgen, omdat veel directies dat nog altijd zien als een gratis promotie en zichtbaarheid niet meer dan dat, terwijl die sociale media eigenlijk veel meer draaien rond het opbouwen van een community, met langetermijnvisie. Denk je dat dat een probleem kan zijn in het verder uitwerken van de social media, dat je die directe return niet kan aantonen, eigenlijk? Dat het meer een langetermijnproject is? YS: we hebben wel het voordeel dat we nog altijd niet… niet steeds met cijfers moeten komen… RV: …ja, voila… YS: … Directie laat ons wel de tijd om iets te laten rijpen, dat we niet direct cijfers moeten hebben… Ze weten ook wel dat dat niet altijd mogelijk is. En ook gewoon uit de, ja, kwalitatieve reacties op zo’n sociale media, af en toe zo eens een quote doorsturen denk ik dat geen kwaad kan. Het is de community die over ons zal stoefen, in plaats van wij over onszelf. MD: Ok. Zijn er daar nog opmerkingen over, of dingen die je kwijt wilt of… RV: ja nee, als jij nog tips hebt om… Allez, je hebt ons intussen wat kunnen volgen of meegewerkt aan posts en tweets en… Want wij horen dat graag, en wij doen ook maar wat wij denken dat goed is – het is eens goed om… MD: … ik denk – wat ik wel gezien heb, is dat er soms heel wat posts op één dag komen op Facebook. Wat minder positief is, gewoon om het feit dat Facebook – kijk, vroeger kon je dat allemaal doen. Dan zag iedereen alles wat er gepost werd. Maar nu wordt dat veel meer gefilterd, en zie je – als je de organisatie gewoon liket zonder die aan je interesselijst toe te voegen – dan zie je maar 20% of zo van de content die gecreëerd wordt… YS: ja, of als je zelf niet liket, volgende keer zit je al niet meer in de lijsten… MD: en dat heb ik ook gezegd in de opmerkingen bij World Ocean Day, dat je dan misschien ook in plaats van allemaal aparte foto’s te posten, één fotoalbum post, en dat je er dan een beschrijvende tekst, een verhaal bij schrijft. Wat ik verder ook heb gezien dat heel goed werkt zijn foto’s met daarop al een uitleg – een quote, of… Het is nu maar een voorbeeld, maar in de Verenigde Staten heb je Bernie Sanders - een independent, eigenlijk, die dus bijna geen kans heeft om president te worden – maar die toch soms tegen de 100,000 likes scoort met zulke foto’s – dan zet hij bijvoorbeeld een foto met een programmapunt – en dat werkt wel. Bij de Facebookpagina ‘I Fucking Love Science’ doen ze het soms ook zo, en daar zie je dan ook wel dat dat dan heel veel gedeeld wordt. Maar dat is niet – een foto delen gaat veel makkelijker voor gebruikers dan een hele post delen…

RV: … ja, voila – van de eerste keer de foto met de hele quote en dan heb je meteen de boodschap en hoef je geen tekst en inleiding en link te klikken om… MD: … en dan kun je daar wel een link bij zetten, want diegenen die daar dan willen naartoe gaan, kunnen dat. Maar ik zou dan – da’s dan gewoon mijn idee – de tekst die je in de beschrijving zou zetten dan in de foto zelf zetten. Er een interessante en wervende tekst van maken. Of een quote van een onderzoeker, of… YS: waar wij ook wel mee kampen, is soms de vertraging door de vertaling. Want we zijn wel als federale instelling verplicht om vaak in het Nederlands te… RV: … ik denk dat we de moeilijkste instelling ter wereld zijn op dat vlak (lacht) YS: ja, we doen het meestal in drie talen – Engels, Nederlands, Frans – Twitter kan je gewoon in het Engels doen, maar we kunnen dat niet met álle sociale media doen, in het Engels. MD: Nee ja, tuurlijk niet… YS: dus ja, dat kan dan soms voor vertraging zorgen of – gewoon, ja, dan is het niet meer actueel of … Allez, we proberen zo vlug mogelijk te zijn hé, maar…En met zo’n legende op een foto te zetten of… RV: je hebt daar sites voor he, om dat te doen. Je hebt ook zo die .Gifs hé, op Tumblr – bewegende afbeeldingsbestanden, loops – ik heb dat eigenlijk nog nooit geprobeerd – allez ik heb het wel al een keer geprobeerd, maar ’t is tijdrovend, omdat je al moet een bepaalde grappige boodschap hebben, en dan weten in welke film die bepaalde dialoog – ik weet niet hoe die gasten dat doen, maar… MD: Ja, da’s een referentiekader dat je hebt opgebouwd hé… Als je zo een pop culture nerd bent, dan weet je direct waar je moet kijken om dat te vinden natuurlijk hé (gelach) RV: Ik heb Star Wars of Star Trek zelfs niet gezien, dus ik zal niet tot die pop culture nerds behoren… YS: en dat durf jij zomaar zeggen! (lacht) RV: ik durf dat zeggen (gelach) MD: ik heb gifs ook al eens geprobeerd, omdat ik zo een ammoniet heb die in een steen zit, en die jer er uit kan halen en dan zo die beweging om dat uit te halen… Want het ziet er dan gewoon een steen uit, maar als je die dan opendoet zit er vanbinnen een ammoniet in. Ja, dat is ook wel geestig om zelf wat mee te … prutsen, ook omdat dat eigenlijk, eens je daarmee weg bent, is dat niet veel werk, en dat is wel goed om mensen mee te engageren en zo. RV: … dus toch nog het proberen waard, die gifs. MD:ja,tuurlijk. Ik zie dat het interview wat uitloopt, dus ik stel voor dat we dan overgaan naar Pinterest, en de meer specifieke vragen. Jullie hebben allemaal wel een globaal idee van hoe dat werkt en zo. Er wordt gewerkt met verschillende boards met verschillende thema’s waarop je links naar afbeeldingen kunt pinnen. Wat zijn, volgens jullie, thema’s waarrond je een visueel aantrekkelijk board zou kunnen opbouwen, denk je? YS: jij had een aantal dingen opgeschreven… RV: ja, ik dacht: per zaal – maar dan zo met de persfoto’s en de… CD: oui mais ça peut être plus que de photos de presse… mais de belles photos de la salle ou des spécimens liés à la salle… YS : en als het dan per zaal is, kan je bijvoorbeeld op het board van de dino’s niet alleen de foto’s van de zaal, maar ook de knutselwerkjes rond de dino’s, en recepten rond dino’s – ofwel splits je het op in recepten en knutselen en… Ofwel doe je alles rond dino’s.

CD: nous on a plutôt pensé de fonctionner par salle, puis tout un truc ‘to do with kids’, les bricolages à faire avec les enfants à la maison, on a des petites vidéos avec des expériences à faire à la maison… On pensait aux coulisses du Muséum, des vieilles images aussi… YS : ja, zeker. En dan die tekenaars bijvoorbeeld hé, die tekeningen. CD: on peut aussi faire des missions – des photos des scientifiques en mission. RV : je kan er fantastisch veel mee doen… YS: ik had zo voor de expo van babydieren – zo voor kinderfeestjes he, van wat kan je eten, bijvoorbeeld een boterham maken van een lieveheersbeestje, en kleine lolly’s maken met dierenfiguurtjes en zo. Dus ofwel doe je dat in een bricolage ‘to do with kids’, want dan kan je ook beginnen repinnen van anderen. Want we doen hier ook wel verjaardagsfeestjes, bijvoorbeeld – dus misschien zoeken de mensen wel inspiratie rond dinoideeën, walvissen,… CD: on va faire un tableau: Dinofreaks (gelach) RV : ja, en de onderzoekers, hé… Misschien die ook… Op hun missies, en misschien ook… YS: ja en zo van die micro-macrofoto’s, bijvoorbeeld van een oog van een insect of zo… Omdat Pinterest ook vaak mooi is, zo esthetisch, een mozaïek van… CD: le jour qu’on aura enfin des jolis interviews avec nos scientifiques, les présentations de leur travail… un jour, un jour… On pourra aussi les mettre sur Pinterest. Ce sera probablement être plus facile de les introduire sur Pinterest que sur YouTube… RV : et notre bâtiment peut-être aussi, parce qu’il y a beaucoup de gens qui aiment les bâtiments, l’architecture… YS : ja, een architectuurbord, en van die heel mooie invalshoeken, en vroeger-en-nu,… RV: bijvoorbeeld de wenteltrappen, de tegeltjes, alles esthetisch, de esthetiek van het gebouw, ik denk wel dat dat ook wel nog een goed board zou zijn. CD: les détails de l’ancien bâtiment sont aussi magnifiques. Les anciens bureaux aussi… YS : en die wenteltrap in de Dinogalerij… RV : en dan de couloir op het tiende, met al die hertenkoppen… MD: Ik ben blij met de thema’s die hier aan bod zijn gekomen, want het Museum of Natural History in London heeft een immens populaire Pinterest met meer dan 100,000 volgers, en die hebben zowat dezelfde thema’s op hun board, zoals ‘inside the museum’, ‘outside the museum’ – dus ook architectuur en zo, de collecties ook worden daar tentoongesteld, ik denk dat het bij hen nog onderverdeeld is in thema’s, zoals mineralen,… Ook weer inspelen op trends zoals Fossil Friday, Mineral Monday en zo, zoals we hier in het Museum ook al doen. Boards met events zouden ook kunnen, dat wordt ook gedaan op hun Pinterest, achter de schermen, en dan ook co-creatie hé, foto’s van jonge ontdekkers, deelnemers aan workshops, zulke zaken. YS: ja, de educatieve dienst… met de kunstwerkjes die ze daar soms maken of gewoon het plezier dat ze daar beleven, zo echt van die plezierfoto’s zo… RV: goh, ik heb al goesting om er aan te beginnen! (gelach) MD: nog een puur praktische vraag, waar ik het gisteren al met Charlotte over gehad heb – het NHM London zet bijvoorbeeld ook dingen van hun webshop op die Pinterest. En dat is wel handig, omdat je altijd een source link hebt, zodat je terug kunt gaan naar de pagina waarop je kan kopen. Denk je dat dat in de toekomst ook mogelijk is, om een webshop te openen die we dan ook via Pinterest zouden kunnen promoten,…

YS: als we al eens zouden kunnen beginnen met online verkoop, dan kan daar vanalles uit voortvloeien, maar dat is ook maar één verantwoordelijke voor de Museumwinkel, en die zou dan echt wel hulp moeten krijgen om… CD: … ça fait des années qu’on en parle mais il y a encore trop de problèmes à résoudre. YS : maar dat is inderdaad wel een mogelijkheid, ja. MD: ja, want als de Pinterest aan populariteit wint, is dat mooi meegenomen natuurlijk… YS: …maar heb je er een idee van, bij anderen, of je Pinterest kunt aankopen… of is dat dan gewoon als soort van shopping list bedoeld, om het aanbod te zien – als board dan maken of zo. MD: ja, inderdaad. Dat is ook altijd mogelijk natuurlijk YS: zo van ‘my wishlist’… MD: ja, inderdaad… Het voordeel van een webshop is dan wel dat je direct kan linken, en dat de mensen direct kunnen kopen via de source link,… RV: maar het is vooral de distributie, he. Dat moet allemaal verpakt worden, en verzonden… want een webshop zelf – allez, er zijn zoveel mensen die webshops beginnen… YS: ja, ’t is dat… RV: …dat de technische tools… er moeten wel open platformen zijn die dat kunnen… YS: er is in de museumwinkel zelf soms al een tekort aan personeel, dus dat inpakken en verzenden… RV: ja, bij EOS hebben we ook een webshop beheerd, maar met dat inpakken en opsturen… Eigenlijk houd je daar ook niets aan over hé, bijna… Ik denk technisch dat dat nu niet zo’n probleem moet zijn. Een catalogus aanmaken, en dan een betaalmodule… Er zijn denk ik toch open platformen om dat te doen, dat moet tegenwoordig toch… CD: non, mais c’est la gestion des stocks et de l’envoi… YS : ja, de afhandeling… RV : en de klachten beantwoorden en zo… dat is inderdaad wel wat anders. Maar ik weet nu ook niet of er vráág naar zou zijn, want eigenlijk moet je dat eerst weten, natuurlijk – zijn er producten die alleen in onze museumshop te vinden zijn, en… YS: …zoals die tassen en zo hé, en T-shirts en… Dan moeten we ook echt nog een grotere merchandising uitwerken. MD: Pinterest is nog niet helemaal doorgebroken in België, maar het is wel aan het groeien: bijna dubbel zo snel als in vergelijking met de rest van de wereld, wat op een inhaalbeweging duidt in België… Maar natuurlijk zijn er ook nog veel meer internationale gebruikers, of landen waar Pinterest populairder is. Denk je dat het dan nuttig is om echt ook in het Engels te werken, en daar dan internationaal op in te spelen? RV: ja, want er kruipt ook gewoon zo veel tijd in… Commentaartjes, al is het maar een paar regels, om die dan in het Nederlands én het Frans én het Engels te doen… Daar kruipt zo veel tijd in, dan kan je het beter gewoon in het Engels doen. MD: dat is wat ik ook dacht, omdat het vooral ook populair is in Engelstalige… YS: ’t is wel ook zo, je moet zien wie je wil bereiken: wil je met Pinterest een community hier in België bereiken, van virtuele bezoekers die ook gemakkelijk naar hier kunnen komen, of wil je achteraf dan bijvoorbeeld communiceren met uw toeristische… allez, met uw toeristen die als bezoeker hier zijn geweest…

Ik denk dat dat twee verschillende doelpublieken zijn. We hebben genoeg andere sociale media om met onze Belgische bezoekers te communiceren, dat Pinterest wel internationaal kan he. CD: le tableau avec les bricolages des enfants, comme on a des explications en néerlandais, en français et en anglais, voilà, on aura les trois langues… mais ça dépend du support… On a aussi parfois des vidéos uniquement en néerlandais ou en français. Maintenant, les collections, c’est facile : tu mets le nom latin. MD : le latin, c’était quand même facile, hé… Veel musea stellen online ook hun collecties tentoon. Dat kan gaan van eigenlijk teasers van wat er in uw expositie komt, tot eigenlijk ganse foto’s en filmpjes … Een virtuele verlenging van het museum, eigenlijk. Denk je dat dat ook een goed idee is om in ons Museum toe te passen? Of wat denk je dat de beste strategie zou zijn – meer met teasers werken, of toch zo volledig mogelijk… RV: teasers, ja… want we hebben nu een website, Virtual Collections, waarin ze echt hele klassen insecten aan het proppen zijn,… YS: er zijn databases… RV: databases genoeg, maar ik snap niet… Allez, dat is wel leuk voor vijf minuten, en fotootjes te zien, maar je hebt geen uitleg of zo… CD: …mais c’est normal, ils sont seulement en train de la remplir. Mais pair contre, il y a un demande pour qu’on fasse un mis-en-page un peu joli, voila. YS : maar dat is ook zo enorm veel hé, onze collectie, daar is bijna geen beginnen aan. Dus ik zou eerder aanraden om met teasers te werken. Highlights, waarbij je dan een beetje uitleg kan geven,… En op die manier aantrekken om verder te zoeken. En die misschien dan naar die databases leiden hé. Je kunt nog altijd een link zetten voor als je echt insecten wil gaan zoeken, of… MD: Maar daar is weer het voordeel van Pinterest natuurlijk hé, want die source staat erbij. RV: maar ik heb nu vier afleveringen klaar in de drie talen die ik gemaakt heb voor ‘geheimen uit ons Museum’, dat was een rubriek die ik ooit bij EOS begonnen was, en die ik eigenlijk graag hier zou verder zetten. En de multimedia zijn ook wel geïnteresseerd om daaraan mee te werken. Het idee is dat je één object, specimen, dat een beetje tastbaar is op een kaasplank legt, twaalf keer fotografeert, en dan kan je dat in een .Gif steken dat hij kan ronddraaien. Met uitleg erbij, en er was vroeger ook nog een podcastje bij – maar goed, geluidskwaliteit daarvan was niet goed, dat was ook met zo’n dictafoontje – dat zouden we eventueel kunnen opnieuw doen. En ik heb daar een testje mee gedaan gisteren, maar de .Gif draait niet rond op onze website. Dus op Tumblr zou ik hem perfect kunnen lanceren, maar op de eigen website blijft het beeld vast. Het kan ook hé – ’t is dan gewoon een mooie foto, maar het zou tof zijn als dat ronddraait natuurlijk. Ik zou dat graag in september, met het nieuwe schooljaar starten, misschien a rato van één per maand om te beginnen… YS: ja, je moet hen ook de tijd geven om het geheim te ontdekken hé, want als je elke week een nieuw geheim hebt… RV: dat is ook waar… onze collecties – maar dan echt wel de highlights, zo waar dat er een verhaal aan vast hangt… YS: … storytelling weer hé… RV: …zoals giftige slakken, de hand van een iguanodon,… YS: er is volgend jaar, via de Brusselse Museumraad, de topstukkencollectie, dus dat wil zeggen dat elk museum dat meedoet en dat uitgekozen is – er zijn honderd topstukken, van Brussel. Wij doen mee met vijf van onze topstukken. Dus we zitten dan al in een promotievorm vanwege de Brusselse musea, maar we hebben

wel besloten dat de tien objecten die wij zelf hadden voorgesteld om op de lijst te komen – dat we die zelf ook meer gaan promoten, dus we gaan dat doen dmv parcours in het Museum, dat zit mee in de gegidste rondleidingen, bijvoorbeeld, dat ze er telkens de nadruk op leggen dus in verschillende leeftijdscategorieën, maar de sociale media gaan daar uiteraard ook mee een rol in spelen, want ’t is de bedoeling dat we tegen – dus in mei 2016 wordt dat dan gelanceerd, en is er een korte periode, tot eind augustus, waarin mensen dan kunnen stemmen, op het topstuk dan (van de 100) dat het uiteindelijk gaat halen. Dus wij gaan onze eigen promotie moeten voeren – en daar gaan de sociale media uiteraard een grote rol mee in kunnen spelen hé. Dus dat we er ook telkens voor zorgen dat we de topstukken, highlights, of hoe we het ook gaan noemen – we mogen die uitbreiden, maar dat we het toch telkens eens zijn over de basistopstukken die we hebben, en dat ieder op zijn manier dat via zijn kanaal kan promoten. RV: we gaan ook testjes doen met een app, waarbij je een parcours kunt uitstippelen. Dus een soort audio guide, maar dan via app, dus je moet geen fysiek bakje meer gaan halen aan het onthaal: je downloadt gewoon de app in totaal, en je kan het hele parcours beluisteren en bewandelen. Maar dat zijn testjes eigenlijk, met een open platform (Easy Travel), en we gaan deze zomer eens wat dingen uitproberen. YS: ook volgend jaar, dan, op die topstukken gericht. Ja, als je uw budget niet wilt verdelen, maar bundelen, dan moet iedereen op dezelfde dingen werken, natuurlijk. MD: ik kijk even in de interviewgids, maar de vraag over digitalisering en ontsluiting van collecties, daar hebben we het al over gehad. Ik had ook nog de vraag van de Galerij van de Dino’s, dat je daar tekeningen kon maken en zo hé – misschien kunnen we die ook dan via Pinterest publiceren. YS: ja, want nu komen ze wel op de website, maar per dag en dan moet je al gaan zoeken van ‘ik ben dan geweest’ om uw tekening terug te vinden, maar we zouden kunnen een ‘best of’ bijvoorbeeld op Pinterest zetten. MD: maar dat zijn ook dingen die je heel makkelijk kan doen hé, of gewoon mensen aanspreken die aan het tekenen zijn hé, die met hun sketchboek in het Museum rondlopen. Als je die zou kunnen delen, zou dat natuurlijk wel tof zijn voor die mensen, en tof zijn voor het Museum natuurlijk, want dat zijn ook van die stories… YS: …want ’t is zelden dat ze ’t zelf opsturen, af en toe komt er es… MD: dan zou je natuurlijk wel de mensen zelf moeten beginnen aanspreken in het Museum hé… YS: … ja, of ervoor zorgen dat ze de hashtags gebruiken hé, dat we ’t kunnen terugvinden – want meestal delen ze het wel, hoor. MD: ’t is dat, maar wij moeten het ook kunnen terugvinden als het gedeeld wordt natuurlijk. Dat is een beetje… niet het probleem, maar… om die content die ze samen met ons gecreëerd hebben eigenlijk, ook aan ons te linken… Ik denk dat we dan wel genoeg info over Pinterest gehad hebben hoor, dus stel ik voor dat we dan overgaan naar Instagram. Het is heel populair, is aan het boomen, wordt ook heel veel gedeeld – maar dat wil ook zeggen dat er heel veel wordt gepubliceerd, dus dat je er wel moet bovenuit steken eigenlijk, om een verschil te maken. Natuurlijk is een Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen daar de ideale plaats voor – met bijna alles dat hier buitengewoon en niet dagdagelijks is, natuurlijk. Waar zien jullie zelf de opportuniteiten voor dat specifieke medium (i.v.m. het Museum of het Instituut)? RV: ik denk achter de schermen; een blik achter de schermen, een nostalgisch, aantrekkelijk beeld geven van musea, van ons Museum…

YS: …ja, ’t zijn gewoonlijk ook zeer mooie foto’s hé, in een bepaalde sfeer. Dus architectuur, dat denk ik dat ook wel populair is op Instagram. De speciale invalshoeken, en… CD: moi, je dirais aussi montrer qu’on est accessible, qu’on est humain; avec le poisson d’avril qu’on a fait… RV : dat is inderdaad een sociaal medium waarop je dat kan doen (een fossiele aprilvis hangen). Op Twitter, bijvoorbeeld, ja, ik weet niet of dat… op Instagram, ik vind dat wel koddig. YS: Instagram is ludieker, met grapjes… RV: ludiek, koddig, terwijl Twitter zou ik dan meer gebruiken voor nieuws – er mag ook humor gebruikt worden op Twitter natuurlijk, dat werkt ook wel, we hebben dat al een paar keer gemerkt als je humor gebruikt, dat is wel populair, maar zo de kleine verhaaltjes: dat is wel Instagram. YS: ja, Instagram heeft wel een bepaalde sfeer. MD: ja, die aprilvis is eigenlijk opgesomd wat er allemaal werkt op Instagram: je hebt creativiteit, je hebt humor, en je hebt content die gelinkt is aan uw Museum… YS: en ook zo, ja, de beroepen van de mensen hé, we hebben hier echt heel speciale beroepen, zoals taxidermist, van alles en nog wat – mensen zitten tussen de mieren, van de kleinste tot de grootste dieren, en ook zo het werkplezier, denk ik. Instagram is ook zo een kanaal om plezier te tonen. Zoals ik daarnet zei van die kinderen in de workshop – bij Instagram stel ik mij ook zo de lachende bezoeker voor, of… MD: ja, want als we ze op een continuüm zouden zetten, zou Twitter eigenlijk meer gericht zijn op informatie zoeken, Facebook zit tussen de twee, en Instagram is eigenlijk voornamelijk fun, en plezier, experience,… Met fun bedoel ik natuurlijk ook… YS: …ja, plezier in het werk… MD: …voila… CD: en esthetiek. MD : inderdaad ; mooie foto’s, boeiende verhalen, dingen waarmee mensen hun vrije tijd zouden opvullen, bijvoorbeeld. Daarom denk ik ook dat het heel interessant is om die medewerkers eens aan het woord te laten met een specimen dat zij heel waardevol achten, of met een verhaal zelf dat je dan in de beschrijving kan zetten… We zien ook dat dat werkt in een Facebook-pagina als Humans of New York, waarbij een fotograaf gewoon door New York loopt en mensen fotografeert, en in de beschrijving op Facebook staat er dan een verhaal – een levensverhaal, of iets dat ze kwijt willen of zo. En je ziet dat dat ongelofelijk veel likes en reacties genereert, en interactie ook; en ik denk dat dat een heel interessante route zou zijn om in te slaan. YS: ’t zou heel fijn zijn om daar de tijd voor te hebben en te maken, want we merken wel als er zo een uitzending is geweest op tv die de human interest-kant opzoekt en we delen dat – er was hier bv. een koppel op bezoek, zij was Vlaamse en hij was Deen of omgekeerd, en ze wilden aan hun kinderen het Museum tonen waar ze vroeger zelf rondliepen – zo die fierheid, en dat plezier dat daarvan uitstraalt en de verhalen van de bezoekers. En hoe veel bezoekers dat er geen foto maken met de Iguanodon vooraan aan het Museum, we zouden daar ook een board kunnen van maken bijna op Pinterest of op Instagram, zou ook heel mooie foto’s kunnen opleveren. Maar dan moet je bijna – we hebben een fotograaf, maar dan zou je bijna een fotograaf nodig hebben om die plezierfoto’s te maken en in alle platformen – én in Instagram, én professioneel, en in alle mogelijke formaten te maken hé. Dus ja, da’s weer zeer arbeidsintensief. RV: ik heb altijd mijn iPhone mee, en ik neem altijd overal foto’s, YS: ja, als je zo iets opmerkt van een bezoeker of zo…

RV: ik heb een hele cloud vol KBIN-foto’s, en daar zitten sommige dan tussen die je dan kan gebruiken voor op Instagram dan bv. YS: ja en dan bv. ‘hug a museummedewerker’ today – en dan maak je gauw een foto, hé. RV: maar ik zie wel dat Instagram – allez, we zitten er nog niet zo lang op en we hebben nog niet zo heel veel volgers – maar ik zie wel dat er veel geliket wordt – nu los van de volgers zie ik wel veel likes, ook omdat je dan met die tags werkt. Bv. onze fotograaf die dan oude geologische mappen aan het fotograferen is, met het verhaaltje dat we dan de doodsoorzaak van de Iguanodons gaan onderzoeken – ik weet niet hoe die daar op komen, maar er zit ook een beroemde blogger bij… YS: …en welke hashtags heb je dan gezet? Cold Case Bernissart?... RV: … eigenlijk gewoon maar: dinosaurs, museum voor natuurwetenschappen en muséum des sciences naturelles. Als je dan zo doet, dan zie je ook de foto’s van de bezoekers – en die van ons staan er dan tussen; dat geeft dan wel een mooi en gevarieerd beeld. Zo bereik je dus die science blogger @Laelaps, bijvoorbeeld, dat is een enorm invloedrijke blogger, dus die weet ook dat we daarmee bezig zijn, dus die gaat misschien ooit daarover bloggen… Dus ja. Maar ’t is allemaal lange termijnwerk, hé. Je weet niet waarom je het doet, eigenlijk. Waarom je nu precies al die likes probeert te verzamelen hé, ’t is niet meetbaar, ’t is niet welk effect gaat dat hebben… YS: …nee, maar ik denk wel dat we een visie hebben van waar we naartoe moeten en we moeten daar vertrouwen in hebben hé. MD: ja, want dat is uiteindelijk ook een hele toffe vorm van virtuele co-creatie dan hé – zeker als je dan met het gebruik van hashtags die foto’s van het Museum en het instituut zelf zien tussen de foto’s van de bezoekers, dat maakt het wel speciaal natuurlijk. Ik had nog een vraag over IkHebEenVraag. Dat is een project dat ook door jullie gecoördineerd wordt, en het is eigenlijk ook een perfect voorbeeld van citizen science, en hoe het publiek kan worden ingezet in dat cocreatieproces. Ook bijvoorbeeld in Naturalis Leiden zie je dat met Ask A Scientist, en ook de internationale hashtag #AskACurator, dit jaar op 16 september, zijn allemaal goeie voorbeelden van hoe het publiek zelf input kan bezorgen waarop de wetenschappers dan kunnen antwoorden. Zie je op Instagram, of op Pinterest, of zelfs op de site zelf van IkHebEenVraag.be ook de mogelijkheid om die meer multimediacomponent te integreren? Bijvoorbeeld als mensen iets heel aparts zien in de natuur, of ik met mijn fossielen, dat ik daar dan een foto van neem om wat uitleg te willen van de wetenschappers? RV: met Insectenweek hebben we wel gezien dat dat wel werkt – we hebben een oproep gedaan, wel binnen een kleine community, maar een oproep van ‘kijk, heb je een insect gezien, voeg @Insectenweek toe en wij determineren het voor u’. En dat werkt wel, het was nu ook kleinschalig maar het is niet dat we daar nu zo’n grote communicatie aan gehangen hebben, maar stel nu dat dat heel breed verspreid wordt – dat je met die @Insectenweek of #Insectenweek dingen kunt laten determineren, ik denk dat dat ook wel mogelijk zou zijn bij IkHebEenVraag. YS: ze hebben één keer, tijdens Dag van de Wetenschap, denk ik, of tijdens een salon ergens, dat er ook wel live vragen werden beantwoord. Maar dat is dan één keer per jaar of zo hé. EG: Hi. MD: Hello, how are you? EG: Good, how are you? MD: I’m fine, thank you. I just wanted to thank you so much for wanting to help me with my research. EG: Yeah sure! I’m happy to help. MD: Ok, so maybe just a little bit of info about myself – I studied languages and literature, and now I’m doing an additional MA in Business Communication in which I like to focus on scientific popularization, which is why I did an internship at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels. Its social media strategy is still in its early stages, which is why I’m doing this research, to help them figure out what strategies to use, which approaches work best, which is why I contacted you. EG: Thanks! Yeah, cool! MD: so, I suggest we start off right away if that’s good for you. My interview is divided into three parts. One part is about co-creation and visitor participation in general at the Museum; another part is specifically on social media; and then a part concerns my own research, which is on Pinterest and Instagram at the Museum in Brussels. So you could maybe share some of the experiences you had with those platforms – well, not with Pinterest, because the Field Museum doesn’t have one – but at least with Instagram at the Field Museum. Let’s start off right away with co-creation in general. In part due to the rise of the Internet and Social Media and Web 2.0 this last decade, we’ve seen the rise of a new type of consumer, of museum visitor: one that is more informed, more empowered, more active, and more connected. A central notion is this co-creation principle, a view in which there exists a mutual relationship between a Museum and its visitor. We see that museums are shifting from an object-oriented to an audience-oriented approach. We’ve seen lots of initiatives from all over the world with lots of input from visitors, With a lot of input from visitors, who are being actively involved in the Museum’s strategic approach, with a much greater dialogue as a consequence. And in general, just, you know, collaborations with the community and building community and things like that.

Did you notice this change yourself in Montana or in the Field Museum, or in the transition from the one Museum to the other? EG: You mean in terms of, like, the audience kind of supplying content or being able to better express the kinds of things they’re looking for? MD: yes, and sort of creating a space in which the audience feels invited to create their own content and to, you know, contribute to the Museum? EG: yeah, I don’t know if I have any direct examples of that – I do have anecdotal evidence. So the Brain Scoop is a digital community. I can’t speak too much to the other social media, or exhibit efforts from the Museum cause I just don’t work in them, but I have two examples for you. One is just general audience feedback. Now more than ever it’s easier for our audience to communicate with us – what they like to see on the show and the kind of content, and that’s kind of reflected in two ways. One, I listen to them, and occasionally, if there’s a – if people express like, “I wanna see more videos about this” or “I’ve got a question about this, we try to cater to that as much as possible – it’s difficult with the Brain Scoop because we have so many requests, that we can’t meet all of them. But I do have “Ask Emily” episodes, and those are usually pretty successful, in terms of soliciting questions or comments from the audience to get an understanding of what they know, what they don’t know, and of information that they’re seeking about museums. And they – the questions always surprise me, because they can take one of two extremes. One, they’re very focused on the exhibits they have interacted with while they’ve been here that they have a question about. So for instance, we have this Ancient Egypt exhibit, and in this Ancient Egypt they’ve recreated a little Nile river stream, and there are live fish in the stream, and one person asked me for an ‘Ask Emily’ show: “who feeds the fish in the stream”, so there’s questions like that, and then there’s also questions that go into much more detail about somebody’s research, or the extent of a particular collection. The other co-creation that we have is probably the project Hyena Diorama, which – I don’t know if you’re familiar with it… MD: …yeah, the crowd funding… EG: yeah, we launched an Indiegogo campaign, and that was pretty much based off of the enthusiasm of the audience, so we did get some donations from members of our board of trustees and from other employees in the institution, but we had more than 1800 donors and we raised 91% of our funds through the campaign and since it closed, we’ve also had additional corporate sponsors who have contributed to that, but it really was an audience-driven effort, which I think is the most tangible example that I have of co-creation. Not that the audience gets to say what’s going to be in the diorama – they don’t get to dictate the content – but that they feel a part of what is happening in the Museum in a permanent way. This isn’t a travelling exhibit, it’s not a temporary thing, it will be here permanently installed. And I think that’s something that not a lot of museums have been able to do successfully – if any. MD: Uhu – and do you think part of the success of that diorama project is also the, you know, community building that the Museum has been doing over the past couple of years? EG: oh, absolutely –yeah, especially with the Brain Scoop, it was really a Brain Scoop driven project. It took us two years to put this project together – it’s a big undertaking, you don’t want too much from an audience, and it’s really difficult to gage how engaged your audience really is – we don’t sell merchandise, we just haven’t been able to do that successfully for the show to market it, so this was kind of the first time that we were asking for money and for support from our audience. Which museums are nervous about, especially since our Museum appeals to an audience in the 14- to 21-year old demographic, and you never wanna be seen asking

money from kids. And it was never – I mean, it was never about that. It was about creating enthusiasm for natural history collections, no matter the dollar amount, or… So we really emphasized the importance of sharing the campaign – even if you can’t donate, or give money, use your social media influence on your own. And we did see that pay off – that was huge. So I managed to get some other YouTube creators to get involved, who helped me promote it, which was hugely helpful, and that really expanded our audience beyond just Brain Scoop and Field Museum fans, but to actually get people outside of our usual audiences excited about this thing. MD: That’s really awesome! EG: yeah! MD: so - I’m going over my questions, but a lot of what you just said has already been covered by what you just said ,so let’s see – there are of course different levels of involving your public. In The Participatory Museum by Nina Simon, three levels relevant to a Museum’s daily workings are distinguished: There’s contribution, where there’s only a limited input from visitors/public – which I suppose would then be the hyena diorama project; there’s collaboration, where the Museum actively works together with their visitors to create something together; and there’s visitor-driven co-creation: where projects originate from the visitor’s perspective really, who have the largest power in deciding what direction will be taken. What are some of the projects that the Field Museum has done that you know of? EG: yeah, there has – not that I can speak of them as an expert, but we do have a curator here at the Museum who’s an anthropologist – his name is John Terrell - and he implements co-creation and co-curation as part of his collections management, almost. So – anthropology has dramatically changed in the last fifty or thirty or even ten years, and they’ve switched much more now from people from the museums going out into communities and identifying what’s important, and instead having members of those communities, and representatives of those communities and cultures come in and make informed evaluations about the objects. So it’s way less of a Western, 18 th – 19th century approach to like “I’m going to pick what’s important, but instead like really involving these communities in an impactful way and ensuring that they have a voice in the kind of things we are going to do, in a permanent museum collection. So that’s the best example I have of that. I can get you in touch with John Terrell about it – if you want to talk to him about it, he will talk your ear off about it – so I could get you in touch with him and he could give you more information. MD: that’s really cool and interesting, because that is something that would be relevant to the Museum here as well, because we’ve had a bit of a hassle with one of our publicity campaigns. We recently opened a Gallery of Humankind, which connects the human body with its evolutionary history, but on that poster there were some Homo species with a black skin color, and the company Brussels Airlines didn’t want to print the visual, because some of the species were portrayed with a darker skin color, which they thought would offend black people or muslim people or religious people, so I think it would be interesting to show the company that we engaged with those people on beforehand and try to engage and educate them what is really meant with that publicity. Because there’s nothing racist or controversial about it, because that is just what scientists tell us those people – those species looked like, so that’s really interesting. The literature on co-creation and participation also mentions quite frequently the hesitation of institutions to engage and collaborate with visitors, out of a sort of fear for power-sharing and giving up some decisional power. Have you experienced this in any way in Chicago? EG: That’s an interesting question – I don’t think there’s a fear of the power sharing, I think there’s skepticism on the part of the institution of the investment of the audience. So if – you know, our research scientists are the kind of people who are in this institution for the long term. They really embody everything that’s happening around the Museum, and they’re thinking about the preservation and the utility and the longevity

of our collection’s objects and exhibits, not just for the next five years, not just – you know, we’re not aiming for a blockbuster hit; we’re looking for long term management. And so I think that certainly there isn’t a rush on the part of our research scientists to gout and take hold of the next new thing because we know how quickly trends and attitudes and public perceptions can change, so I do see that museum professionals are less hesitant to go out and embrace new audience engagement, whether that’s within the institution or out, because we just can’t keep up. You know, there’s a public perception that natural history museums especially are old and stuffy and out of date and when people come in, they want touch screens, and they want interactives, and they want movies and they want it to be an amusement park. One, we can’t live up to that, because we don’t have the infrastructure or the technology or the budget to make that happen – and two, what’s cool these days is not gonna be cool in ten years. So we’re not gonna make that investment, because we need to be here and stay in business for the next 100 or 200 or 300 years. So I think we’re becoming – we’re very calculated about the kind of investments that we do make and the kind of asks that we are bringing to the audience, and we do take it very seriously when we ask something of them or involve them in some way. MD: so, with what you mentioned, how far do you think museums can go in this co-creational approach? Do you think there’s a limit to that? Do you think there’s a certain point at which co-creation stands in the way of the educational role that museums have to fulfill? EG: that’s a good question – I don’t think co-creation stands in the way of education, I think in some way it might stand in the way of ongoing research. I think co-creation in terms of anthropology, cultural anthropology or archeology collections especially is important, but I don’t really know how co-creation factors in with for example geologic excavations, or zoological collections. I think there’s a lot to be learned about the co-creation method, but then again, it depends on if you’re talking about the people who are helping our scientists grow collections on a global scale or if you’re talking about local Chicago museum visitors. And I think those are different things. MD: And what do you think – because in the Brussels Museum, they fear a bit for introducing at least some cocreation aspects like you guys are doing in Chicago because recently, with our new Belgian government – you know, the Brussels Museum is a federal institution, so the new federal government is implementing serious cuts, also in the operational and in the staff budget of the Museum; do you think co-creation could contribute in doing more with less resources or – you know, the fear of the people at the Museum in Brussels is right in that they’re fearing that there won’t be enough budget to introduce those practices. EG: hmm, that’s a challenging question – I think now more than ever it’s important for museums to be seen as acceptable, welcoming places of discovery, education, and experience making, and this – you know, your mention made me think of the Illinois State Museum, so –the Field Museum is a private institution; we don’t take any tax payer dollars, but our scientists will occasionally be awarded a National Science Foundation Federal Governmental grant which is paid by tax payer’s dollars – but since we’re not a federal museum we don’t have the same kind of pressure as like the National Museum of Natural History, which, you know I’m sure they think about this quite a bit: “what are we putting out there”, and “how much are we pissing off our tax payers if we make a stance about race or evolution” – but in the case of something like the Illinois State Museum, that’s a state-supported facility. And Illinois has e new governor – governor Rauner – and he has elected to close the State Museum and its five sister institutions, and to save some money, when it’s really only 0,002% of the operating budget of the state, and the public outcry has been phenomenal. I mean, where the Illinois State Museum traditionally doesn’t have much of an online presence – they don’t have a lot of digital interactives, but they do service our local community. More than 40,000 local school children visit the Museum, but local school children are not going to be the people who are going to have a major influence on the kind of research that’s happening there. But they do patron the Institution, so when the threat came up

that they were gonna close the State Museum, it really came down to the public rallying and support for the Institution. And I think – I mean, while it’s a terrible looming threat, and I really hope it doesn’t happen, it’s been really inspiring to see the public really enthusiastic about this Museum, even though traditionally the Illinois State Museum hasn’t been on the cutting edge of technology, co-creation, touch screens or interactives. MD: do you have any tips, as sort of a closing statement to this part of the interview, to create this sort of environment at the Museum in Brussels where co-creation can take place, or which steps can be taken to, you know, even if very little, to create this environment? EG: yeah, I do think museums can do a better job in utilizing social media platforms, I think that is the most accessible and – what’s the word I’m thinking of – it’s the strongest or it’s the most clear gateway for an audience or a visitor to communicate with an institution. And it’s really gratifying when that institution responds, so I’ve always tried to create a dialogue, not just speak in the void about museums, but really engaging people in a dialogue about museums, collections, certain topics, and that’s really contributed to the Brain Scoop’s success; and I’d like to see other institutions do more of that, and to really seriously consider what it means to have a social media expert, on their communications & marketing or science & education department. MD: and is there a specific overarching strategy for the Field Museum’s social media, or… EG: Well I’m not in that department, so I can’t really say – which is kind of surprising, but yeah, I can’t tell you. I can tell you my strategy, which is engagement, enthusiasm, and where the Brain Scoop really succeeded is that I’m a public face for the Field Museum. So when I say something, people can hear it in my voice, and I’m a go-to for when they have a question or comment about something, and I see that even years after I made a statement about it, so like – I did an episode on pangolins, two years ago, and I still have people, any time they visit the Museum, any time there’s a pangolin topic in the news, they send that to me and ask “did you see this” or “I thought of you”… MD:… oh I remember that episode as well… EG: Yeah! I love that episode! And so I see that across a number of topics as we get further into Brain Scoop and the topics that we cover, and I cherish those moments, because that is where I see the impact of our show and the engagement with the audience. MD: and do you think that is also part of why the Field Museum attracted you and your channel? EG: Yeah – or, you know, I think I was more attracted to the Field Museum, honestly, because of their extensive collections and the opportunities that I saw here in terms of joining researchers on expeditions, and having access to those world-leading experts; that’s not something that I had in Montana. Montana has a fantastic collection of regional animals, for the state and for the geographic range that it services, it’s a repository for vertebrates for the state of Montana, but they didn’t have any ongoing research. And the real vitality of natural history museums comes from that continued support of our research being published – otherwise, you’re just becoming a library that nobody’s using. MD: so are you experiencing the impact of the Brain Scoop and the success of that channel in the daily operations of the Field Museum itself? Are there people who specifically visit because they’ve seen you and the Brain Scoop? EG: Yeah, there are, and I’ll be honest, I’m a little disappointed that there isn’t a better infrastructure for me to know about that, or for me to be able to meet with those people. Unless somebody tweets at me or emails me saying “hey, I’ll be visiting, let’s meet up”, I usually don’t know about it. We’ve never put an effort in counting how impactful this program is, we’ve never pulled people at the door and asked them “have you heard of the

Brain Scoop”, “would you like to see more of the Brain Scoop”. So I do know that people visit because of the show, and more importantly, though, people visit their local museums because of the show, and that’s always been kind of my motivation for being a natural history museum advocate, it’s that I understand that it’s not very realistic to have people from halfway across the world to make a trip to Chicago just to visit one place, but that’s not the point. The point is becoming a patron and a supporter of your local institution. Because there are hundreds of natural history museums and they all kind of conform to the same mission and goals of research collections care and public interaction. And I think those are the things that have been declining, and the Brain Scoop can really help on a more impactful level locally, in that way. MD: to be honest with you, that’s also why last year I visited the Brussels Museum and decided to do my internship here… EG: …that’s so nice! Yeah, but I’ve never had quantifiable data, you know, I’ve never been able to come up with a list of how many people, and something that somebody said to me a while ago is that, you know, they don’t think that we’ll see the actual impact of the Brain Scoop for another ten to fifteen years; not until the kids that are growing up watching it right now make decisions about what they wanna do with their lives. MD: and is it, then, in your experience easy to engage people in dialogue with the Museum and with the Brain Scoop? What strategies and what sorts of content do you think can generate most dialogue and most responses? EG: I think what generates most responses is the Museum or me demonstrating that we’re paying attention. We’re paying attention to local issues, we’re paying attention to local conversations or global conversations, and we’re actively participating in those things. And a lot of those things are really difficult for a museum to do. Because again, your business side of it is relying on the patronage of the people, and you never wanna alienate any type of your audience. So some things that have been rely successful, are like when ISIS was destroying all of those artifacts at the museum, in Kabul – I think it was Kabul – the Field Museum made a stance about it, but not in a – not a direct, not a targeted stance, but it was as simple as putting an empty case in the middle of our main hall – with a sign that said “imagine if all the cases in the Field Museum were empty”. And that’s all it said, and I get teary even thinking about it; it was really impactful, and it wasn’t that we were making a political statement, it was just that we were showing solidarity for our peers, colleagues, across the world, who are working to preserve natural artifacts everywhere. MD: The role of social media is often misinterpreted as an extra free advertising and promotional space, rather than a way to engage your audience and create a more tight-knit community. This misinterpretation has the consequence that management also expects short-term returns which are quite difficult to quantify for social media - instead of realizing that this should be a long-term project. Have you experienced some of that tension at the Field Museum as well? EG: Yes. (laughs) Yeah, and I mean I’ll just be honest, it is very difficult to justify my own success, because I don’t know the metrics to use. People either put way too much gravity behind social media, where they think about it way too seriously, and it inhibits their ability to use these platforms freely and quickly and nimbly, or they put too much stock into the platforms, and they expect to see an immediate return, and they expect to see some kind of great impact, and those metrics just don’t exist yet. And these platforms are so new, that it’s really difficult to figure out how best to use them, and how best to quantify success. When I talk about the success of the Brain Scoop, I use more anecdotal evidence than anything. I talk about the enriching interactions that I have with people when I meet them. I talk about interviews like this, that I grant to people who have gone into a field of study like this, because of the work of museums and of things like the Brain Scoop. And somehow, that’s not good enough. Somehow, that doesn’t translate to dollars or a return on the investment.

And I didn’t go to business or marketing school, so I don’t know how to do that, but when I talk about success for the show, I say – you know, you can compare the Brain Scoop to other science channels on YouTube; you can compare us to Vsauce, or Smarter Every Day, or whatever, but fundamentally, those people aren’t housed at an institution, and they don’t have the demands that we do to think of all these different researchers, and PR efforts and marketing efforts and they don’t have to consider any of that. And if it turns out that ‘only’ 40,000 people watch an episode about the naked mole rat (that was a project we did in collaboration with one of our curators who published a new paper on it), and 40,000 people would have never read that paper, but 40,000 people did watch that video. And I think that’s a really challenging thing for people to understand and comprehend: that that is a huge impact. It might not be a viral hit; it might not result in people knocking down the door and throwing money at us, but it is successful. And it’s just – I mean, the Brain Scoop has been really successful, and it’s easy to see the success, but that’s really difficult to translate for institutions who don’t have a YouTube presence like we do, or who don’t have the kind of social following that I do. And I think that’s super challenging, because I would never want somebody to relate their department’s social media efforts to the Brain Scoop, because those are not – just like I can’t compare to Vsauce or Smarter Every Day, other small museums I understand cannot compare to what we’re doing. Not to say that they someday couldn’t achieve that, but right now these platforms are just too new. MD: Uhu. So, that was my social media part of the interview; moving on to Pinterest, which the Museum in Brussels would also like to introduce; what do you think are visually attractive themes around which you can build boards? EG: food pictures? I don’t really use Pinterest, and I don’t – maybe this is stereotypical and erroneous of me, but I think that Pinterest is used mostly for people who are planning weddings and designing elementary school class rooms. That’s what I see the utility of Pinterest to be. I use Pinterest to look up food recipes; so when I just wanna look at pictures of cookies, I just go on Pinterest, and look up cookie recipes. So I haven’t figured out yet how that would translate to how a museum would utilize it, because I don’t know that the audience exists for that. You know, maybe I just – I don’t know. I don’t know how that translates – because Pinterest is so visual, but it’s also very much DIY, so I don’t know how shareable that content would be when you’re thinking about museum objects or artifacts. But I could be wrong – I don’t know. MD: [explaining the case of how NHM London uses Pinterest, see also section 4.1.1] EG: Well that’s really interesting, yeah – I can see a good utility for that. Yeah, because when you visit a museum, you wanna find that community of other museum-goers, even if they’re not there with you or at the same time. So I can respect that. MD: I’ve been looking into Instagram for the Museum and the Museum in Brussels recently created an Instagram account, and I also did a location search on the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels, and in less than four years, almost 1000 pictures were taken at the Museum, and that is just a great, visual, original and creative use of the Museum’s collections and that is part of what my research is about: there are really easy ways that don’t take a lot of effort, but still create a lot of great creative input from your visitors. EG: Yeah, and you get an idea of what they like and what they don’t like, and I think that’s a great idea. I always tag the Field Museum in my photos when I’m at the Field Museum. I’ve even taken to going back to old photos before they enabled location services and started tagging, because I want somebody to someday look at the Field Museum and see all of these things. So that’s great. MD: the Museum in Brussels is also making a major investment – although there are a lot of austerity measures, this is one major investment they’re making – in scanners to digitize the collections, which include

around 37 million specimens. Do you think it would be interesting to build online exhibitions, or, you know, in one way or another, disclose them to the public? EG: I do – and I – this is something that we talk about a lot, because the Field Museum also put a major investment into imaging specimens. I don’t call it digitization, because when I think of digitization I think of digitally putting the collection information online and that doesn’t always accompany an image – and no member of the public is just going to want to look up locality data of a freshwater darter fish from 1987 in Mexico – you know, that’s never going to come across somebody’s mind – but I think the imaging could be really useful. But I don’t yet know how, because – I mean if you’re imaging beautiful specimens, if you’re imaging really visually engaging specimens, that’s one thing and people are going to be happy to share that. But I question the search functionality of these things. I think the infrastructure is more daunting than we anticipate if you’re planning on imaging 37 million objects. That’s huge – that’d be super overwhelming, and the reality is, most of those specimens are probably not visually appealing, and they probably don’t each have a compelling enough narrative to allow them to be really shareable. If that makes sense. MD: … yeah, sure… EG: … I think it’s more realistic to – if we’re going to be imaging type specimens, or paratypes – but even then, a lot of the times types are not – they’re not the prettiest, or best looking specimen; and a lot of them are really old. So I’m just curious about it. I’d love to see that happen in a way that maybe was – it could act like a Wikipedia rabbit hole, you know, when you click on Wikipedia and it links you from one article to the next and you can just explore and investigate in your own way. But I think there’s got to be more of a social component to it. There needs to be a better shareability, and I think the infrastructure for searching needs to exist before that can be successful. MD: And does the Field Museum do any of those things you mention in one way or another? EG: they’re working on it, but their primary focus is to just get the pictures online. But I couldn’t tell you how to access that. I have no idea, I think they’re on an internal database right now. But there’s no accessibility for the public yet. MD: so you also mention that not all of those specimens would have this interesting narrative. Do you think that storytelling is important to engage people? EG: I do. I think storytelling is hugely important. It doesn’t have to be the Iliad, it doesn’t have to be the Odyssey for every specimen, but I think some kind of anecdotal narrative, to make that specimen relatable, can be super compelling. And that’s how I utilize my own Instagram. Whenever I’m photographing or sharing a picture of a specimen I try to highlight in two to three sentences what is really compelling about that specimen, why it caught my eye… Or the most gratifying thing for me to share is a really compelling narrative, that accompanies a really unimpressive-looking specimen. So I do try to get my audience to think critically about these objects and to understand that every specimen we have is an individual, they all have their own story (but like I said, not all of those stories are that incredibly engaging). I’m trying to think of a – I’m thinking of a trilobite, I photographed a while ago. And it was like 360 million years old, or something outrageous, and it was found here in Illinois. So I photographed it, the thing was like this big, it was a big trilobite, just with the caption like, “350 million years ago, these critters were scurrying around present-day Chicago- can you imagine what the rest of the world looked like then?” I mean, it’s nothing insane, it’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s just to get people to think about our planet. MD: that’s really interesting, because a friend of mine said that what he thinks works best are just dry facts. Which I disagreed with, because there should be an interesting story to tell, even with those dry facts. EG: yeah, dry facts can be compelling for somebody who understands the context. But if you’re just telling people: “This is trilobite. Its scientific name is that. It lived in the Miocene, or it lived in whatever –cene” - that

means nothing to most people. You know, they don’t know when that was, they don’t know what the planet looked like, they can’t imagine the climate that existed here – and I don’t think that’s very compelling or engaging. MD: and are there certain types of content that you experienced work better than others? EG: it depends on what platform I’m using. Videos are not shared very well on Tumblr, if it’s an embedded link, but photos are; photo albums on Facebook are good if it’s just a couple of photos, but if you post like this big thing, then people won’t click through all of them. I don’t know, I mean, it really just depends on the platform you’re using, and I really discourage people from posting the same content across all platforms. If you have an Instagram picture, posting it to Pinterest is fine, but probably, if you’re trying to focus more on Pinterest. But I can see the utility of having a Pinterest board for Instagram pictures better if you’re sharing other people’s Instagram pictures. You know, does that make sense? MD: yeah… EG: I just think it’s really important to distinguish between platforms. Understand what you find to be most successful or engaging depending on the content you’re sharing there and then do that. MD: uhu. So I guess we already arrived at my last question – there’s this project that’s being coordinated by the Museum in Brussels, which is called IkHebEenVraag.be, which is Dutch for IHaveAQuestion.be, a site on which people can just ask questions which are then sent to scientists all over Belgium in 40 different research institutes, which are then answered and published on the site. It’s been quite successful, with I think almost 15,000 questions answered in a period of 7 years. But unfortunately, you can only ask written questions (or at most add one picture); so not much in the sense of pictures, audio or video content, and certainly no ways to plug into social media. Do you think there are possibilities there? EG: Oh yeah. Definitely, I would say 100%. If you can adapt that to social media, if you can get the public connected with experts through either the Brussels Museum’s main social media channels, or by enabling your scientists to have their own social media channels and following, I think that would be fantastic. And we’ve done that, at the Field Museum; we have an exhibit called ‘Extinct Madagascar’, which is all about prehistoric life that existed on Madagascar. And it was created with the expertise of two of our scientists who work down there, and then we gave them their own Twitter accounts; and we have a digital reading rail that’s installed in the exhibit, so you can stand there and you have to use your own Twitter, but you can tweet at the scientists and the question will come up. And eventually, they’ll answer; and that goes into a long feed of previously asked questions, and I think it’s been really successful for the Museum. So I’d like to see more of that; our scientists love and enjoy and appreciate interacting with the public, and I think utilizing social media to make those connections more directly can be hugely successful. MD: it’s also a real pity that it’s only one person who coordinates that site half time, what with budget, but it would be interesting to just show them your input on what works and what can be done. So that was the interview – I’d like to thank you very much, and also for your – I think it’s two or three years – of hosting the Brain Scoop channel… EG: Thanks! Korte voorstelling van het bedrijf en de stageplek Het Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen in het hartje van Brussel kan worden gezien als het ‘uitstalraam’ van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN), een instelling van de Belgische federale staat, waarvan het een integraal onderdeel is. Het Instituut kent vier grote missies:
Natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek;
Wetenschappelijk onderbouwde dienstverlening aan overheidsinstellingen;
Beheer en uitbouw van de patrimoniale en wetenschappelijke verzamelingen;
Verspreiding van kennis inzake natuurwetenschappen.
In het kader van die laatste missie speelt het Museum een rol van onschatbare waarde – met onder andere de Galerij van de Dinosauriërs, de grootste in zijn soort in Europa, als paradepaardje. Het Museum kan putten uit een collectie van niet minder dan 37 miljoen specimens, en moet dan ook enkel het Natural History Museum in Londen en het Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle in Parijs laten voorgaan op Europees vlak. Het hoeft dan ook geen verder betoog dat het Museum een essentiële rol speelt op het vlak van educatie en wetenschapscommunicatie. Naast vaste tentoonstellingen zijn er ook tijdelijke tentoonstellingen en projecten ‘extra muros’ (zoals Valken voor Iedereen, het coördineren en live-streamen van het broedgeval van de slechtvalken op de SintMichiels- en Sint-Goedelekathedraal in april en mei) die helpen deze missie in te vervullen. De tweetalige communicatiedienst van het KBIN is (samen met de afdelingen museologie, tentoonstellingen, educatie, onthaal en de museumshop) een onderdeel van de operationele directie publiek. Aan het hoofd ervan staat Yannick Siebens, die ook mijn stage begeleid heeft.

Beschrijving van de stageopdracht Ik kreeg de kans mee te draaien op de communicatiedienst. De veelzijdigheid van de stage-inhoud was een grote troef; de tijdelijke en permanente tentoonstellingen en projecten als Valken voor Iedereen dankbare thema’s om rond te werken. Er werd gewerkt op promotie en communicatie (persconferenties, promomateriaal, wedstrijden, radio- en tv-spots) van deze tentoonstellingen en projecten. Ook mocht ik persoverzichten maken van de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen. Daarnaast kreeg ik ook de gelegenheid om mijn pen verder aan te scherpen door het schrijven van verschillende populairwetenschappelijke teksten, naast redactioneel werk voor de nieuwsbrief, pers, website en sociale media. Daarnaast kon ik evenementen die plaatsvonden in het Museum bijwonen (zowel in het Museum als erbuiten) en ondersteunen, en bijvoorbeeld de uitgenodigde pers onthalen, naast actief meedenken en brainstormen over de aanpak van deze of gene activiteit. Ook kleinere administratieve taken als het opzoeken van hotels voor gasten en het voorbereiden van uitnodigingen voor de opening van de nieuwe permanente zaal ‘De Galerij van de Mens’ behoorden tot de opdracht.

Zo 10/05: Bijstaan van de promostand van het Museum op de Irisfeesten in Brussel; mensen warm maken om selfies te nemen en te delen in prehistorische klederdracht, naast de poster van de Galerij van de Mens,…
Mee helpen nadenken over hoe de tijdelijke tentoonstelling van het Museum (‘Hersenkronkels’), die eind augustus afloopt, nog eens kon worden gepromoot. Leads opzoeken die de voornaamste doelgroep van het Museum (kinderen/ volwassenen met jonge kinderen) het best zouden kunnen bereiken. Ik heb de Jommekeskrant (de wekelijkse bijlage voor kinderen in Het Nieuwsblad) gecontacteerd, en men heeft op woensdag 8 juli een bericht met wedstrijdvraag gepubliceerd; ook werd Libelle geopperd – zij publiceerden op 16 juli een bericht in hun agenda (zie Bijlage 3). Naar aanleiding van haar gesprek met ons op de training van Crossbridge heb ik ook Ann De Bisschop gecontacteerd, commercieel directeur bij Medialaan, om te zien wat mogelijk was – de doelgroepen van Q-music en JOE fm sluiten namelijk goed aan bij de doelgroep ‘ouders met kinderen’ die het Museum beoogt. Helaas heb ik daar nooit antwoord op gekregen.
Varia
Gezien de tweetalige aard van zowel de communicatiedienst als de communicatie van het Museum op zich, heb ik ook een heleboel (korter dan wel meer uitgebreid) vertaalwerk verzorgd, of als moedertaalspreker van het Nederlands teksten moeten herlezen en verbeteren. Ook moest ik als ‘native speaker’ luisteren of de tv-spot voor de Galerij van de Mens goed klonk, toen die in een studio in Brussel werd ingesproken door een stemartiest.
Daarnaast ook enkele kleinere administratieve taken rond onder andere interne communicatie (de wetenschappers die als contactpersoon van de verschillende afdelingen van het KBIN fungeren contacteren i.v.m. hun bereikbaarheid in de zomervakantie), uitnodigingen versturen voor de plechtige opening van de Galerij van de Mens, accommodatie opzoeken voor gasten van het KBIN,…
Voor de tijdlijn in het jaarrapport foto’s verzamelen of zelf gaan nemen van opmerkelijke gebeurtenissen/tentoonstellingen/uitgereikte prijzen van het voorbije jaar.

Persoonlijke evaluatie van de stage Op het praktische vlak kon ik de flexibiliteit waarmee ik kon werken erg appreciëren. Ik kon al vervroegd in april beginnen met de stage – wat ideaal was, omdat begin april de slechtvalkjes uitkwamen, en begin mei de Galerij van de Mens opende, zodat ik beide projecten al kon helpen voorbereiden en opvolgen. Door de bij momenten haast dagelijkse treinvertragingen waren flexibele uren geen overbodige luxe, en ook voor de examens tijdens de stageperiode zelf kreeg ik telkens genoeg dagen vrijaf om voor te bereiden, iets waarvoor ik (en mijn puntenbriefje) nog altijd erg dankbaar zijn. Zoals blijkt uit de opsomming en toelichting van taken en resultaten, was de stage erg gevarieerd. Dat was, naast mijn passie voor natuurwetenschappen en wetenschapscommunicatie, ook één van de voornaamste redenen om voor deze stage te kiezen. Die gevarieerdheid maakte de stage erg boeiend; het was een waardevolle ervaring om met haast alle componenten van bedrijfscommunicatie in aanraking te komen: van interne en externe communicatie over persrelaties en –analyses tot marketing, van promoties en het bijstaan van events tot copywriting en redactioneel werk. Veruit het meeste inzicht kreeg ik op het vlak van persbeleid en persrelaties, waar niet alleen de regelmatige persberichten en contacten met journalisten voor iets tussen zaten: ook de voorbereiding en beleving van evenementen zoals de openingsdag van de Week van het Insect, World Ocean Day, of het Bijenparcours, waar telkens pers aanwezig was, lieten me van dichtbij proeven van de omgang van journalisten met woordvoerders, politici en publiek. De interactie tussen organisatie en pers heeft me echt gefascineerd, en ik werd me nog maar eens bewust van het belang van een goed netwerk. Toen er bij de opening van de Galerij van de Mens een artikel verscheen waarin in de titel een quote was verwerkt waarin werd gesteld dat het Museum de focus expliciet niet op creationisme wou leggen – waardoor in de pers ironisch genoeg de nadruk daar net wel op kwam te liggen – volstond een vriendelijk mailtje en een telefoontje met toelichting van de persverantwoordelijke om de titel binnen het tijdsbestek van enkele uren veranderd te zien. Een andere waardevolle ervaring was de heisa rond Brussels Airlines, die de visual van de Galerij niet in haar in-flight magazine wilde opnemen, om zo te “voorkomen dat moslims en mensen van 6
Afrikaanse afkomst niet voor het hoofd werden gestoten” (hun woorden, niet de mijne). Wat begon als iets vrij beperkt – de ene organisatie die beslist de visual van de andere organisatie te weigeren – kreeg onder meer door een artikel in De Standaard en een opiniestuk in De Morgen (zie Bijlage 3) toch meer aandacht van pers en publiek dan initieel verwacht, en het onderstreepte nog maar eens dat hoe goed je ook rekening houdt met eventuele reacties bij het opstellen van content (ook al is die gebaseerd op een solide basis van wetenschappelijk onderzoek), je soms toch nog af krijgt te rekenen met niet te voorziene gevolgen. Nu, de keerzijde van de medaille was evenwel dat door de grote afwisseling in de taken, ik behalve mijn thesis niet echt grote projecten had om me in vast te bijten. Natuurlijk kon ik wel toeleven naar zaken als de Week van het Insect en vooral de opening van de Galerij van de Mens – de week daarvoor was op een erg leuke manier erg hectisch – maar de meeste taken kon ik op een voormiddag afwerken, en de eerlijkheid gebiedt me op te biechten dat een dergelijke structuur van werken me niet echt deugd deed, besef ik nu. De dode momenten vulde ik maar al te graag in met het lezen van populairwetenschappelijke artikels over onderwerpen die te maken hadden met de thema’s van de projecten die zich in en rondom het museum afspeelden, of een bezoekje te brengen aan wetenschappers om te ontdekken waar ze mee bezig waren. Desondanks knaagde het soms toch een beetje, ook al omdat er hier en daar een moment was dat ik de stage niet echt op niveau van de MaNaMa vond. Misschien had dat ook te maken met de structuur van werken, waarbij de meeste zaken vaak (naar mijn gevoel soms ietsje te vaak) nog eens extra werden gecontroleerd, nagelezen en gecorrigeerd vooraleer groen licht werd gegeven. Niet dat daar in se iets mis mee is, maar het gaf me af en toe toch een beetje een onbehaaglijk gevoel – ik snap dat het de manier van werken is, en dat wetenschappelijke correctheid bij een organisatie als het KBIN ervoor zorgt dat men echt zeker wil zijn van zijn zaak vooraleer iets te publiceren, maar ik vond het niet zo’n leuke manier van werken. Op andere momenten gaf mijn stagebegeleider zelf toe dat door het structurele onderbemand zijn van de communicatiedienst het gewoon niet mogelijk was om sommige projecten aan stagiairs uit te besteden, en dat het door de aanzienlijke tijd die het neemt om stagiairs wegwijs te maken in die projecten soms gewoon makkelijker is om ze door vaste werknemers uit te laten voeren. Misschien had ik achteraf gezien wat assertiever moeten zijn op dat vlak. Het probleem 7
werd ook aangekaart tijdens het interview met de communicatieverantwoordelijken voor mijn thesis: als al het werk dat nodig gedaan dient te worden achter de rug is, blijft er gewoon zo weinig tijd en ruimte over om leuke ideeën en nieuwe projecten op poten te zetten, zodat het al te vaak bij ideeën blijft, en dat is jammer. Hoe dan ook, iedere ervaring is leerrijk, en ook de eerder negatieve ervaringen hebben me in ieder geval ook een hoop inzichten voor de toekomst opgeleverd. Tot slot bleek het werken op een tweetalige communicatiedienst van goudwaarde voor mijn taalvaardigheid in het Frans. Veel collega’s waren Franstalig, en ik heb hen expliciet gevraagd om gewoon Frans tegen me te praten. Ook al ging dat in het begin nog met horten en stoten: je moet gewoon dúrven praten, durven fouten maken, en dan uiteraard leren uit die fouten – en het deed enorm plezier om je taalvaardigheid in een taal die je ooit veel beter meester was er zienderogen op vooruit te zien gaan, met collega’s die je met constructieve kritiek en veel geduld op de goede weg hielpen.
