TO TEACH OR NOT TO TEACH? DE KUNSTSCHOOL IN VRAAG / QUESTIONING THE ART SCHOOL KONINKLIJKE ACADEMIE VOOR SCHONE KUNSTEN ANTWERPEN 7-8 NOVEMBER 2013
PROGRAMMA / PROGRAMME
I. DONDERDAG 7 NOVEMBER - voormiddag – “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ACADEMIE!”
Dagvoorzitter: SONJA SPEE, opleidingscoördinator beeldende kunsten, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen
1. DRIES LYNA: 'Vliegen zonder vleugels.
Voorbeelden zijn Laboratorium (Antwerpen, 1999) en The Art Judgement Show (2001). In 2006 was zij hoofdredacteur van het boek The Manifesta Decade. Debates on Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Biennials in Post Wall-Europe (MIT Press).
Gerard (dr. G.A.)

In Antwerpen tellen we daarmee drie Schools of Arts binnen twee hogescholen.
Peter De Graeve is filosoof.

Dan Graham is an American artist, writer, and curator. He lives and works in New York. He had no formal education after high school and is self-educated. In the past thirty years, Dan Graham has proved himself to be a wide-ranging artist. His work consists of performance art, installations, video, sculpture, and photography. Graham's work was always firmly based within conceptual art practice.
2. DIRK PULTAU: Introduction of Research project on the Autodidact
Dirk Pültau is art historian, guest professor at KASK Ghent, and art critic. He wrote numerous contributions, often together with Koen Brams, for the art magazine “De Witte Raaf”. A lot of these articles are about art, collections of museums and art education.
3. DIRK PULTAU IN CONVERSATION WITH HINRICH SACHS
Hinrich Sachs is an artist and writer, living in Basel, Switzerland, since 2007 professor at Kungliga Konsthögskolan, Stockholm. While critically reflecting upon cultural frameworks, he focuses on testing, elaborating, choreographing and transferring cultural material, its forms and formats.
4. KOEN BRAMS IN CONVERSATION WITH LUC TUYMANS AND HERMANN PITZ Luc Tuymans is a Belgian artist who lives and works in Antwerp. Tuymans is considered one of the most
influential painters working today. His signature figurative paintings transform mediated film, television, and print sources into examinations of history and memory. Hermann Pitz lives in Germany. The work of Hermann Pitz has been a defining point of reference in the
German art scene since its appearance in the early eighties; it encompasses sculpture, quasi-
architecture, photography, and installations. Many of his multi-layered works contain echoes of previous artworks, sometimes even of entire exhibitions.
Koen Brams was the director of the Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht (2000-2010). Previously, he was editor-in-chief of the art magazine “De Witte Raaf” (1991-2000). He published the book ‘The Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists’ (2000), and articles such as ‘Interdisciplinariteit, Heterogeniteit, Kunst in Crisis’ (2003), and ‘Internationaliteit’ in an annual report of the Amsterdam Fund for the Visual Arts. In 2000 he initiated an in-depth research of the work of Jef Cornelis. Together with Dirk Pültau, he has undertaken a number of research projects relating to an alternative history of art in Belgium since the seventies. On demand of NICC, Koen Brams and Dirk Pültau were working on the notion of “autodidact” in the arts.
5. PERFORMANCE BY EMILIO LOPEZ MENCHERO: "Claquettes" (tr: "Tap" or "Clappers")
Emilio Lopez Menchero has stated in his previous artistic projects the question of the identity of the 'artist' in our society . He plays with codes and expectations and infiltrates recognizable elements from the popular, everyday culture in an ' artificial ', cultural context. He exercises his artistic practice with strong social significance.
IV. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 8th – afternoon – CAREERS OF ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS RELATED TO ART EDUCATION
Chair: JOHAN PAS, lecturer modern and contemporary art history, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp
1. ROBERTA COMUNIAN: ‘Creative graduates: challenges and career opportunities in the creative economy’ In this lecture, Roberta Comunian explores the different career patterns and economic performance of creative graduates across different creative disciplines. While it is widely acknowledged in the literature that careers in the creative field tend to be unstructured, often relying on part-time work and low wages, our knowledge of how these characteristics differ across the creative industries and occupational sectors is very limited. Comunian will explore the different trajectory and career patterns experienced by graduates in different creative disciplinary fields and their ability to enter creative occupations. Data from the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA) are presented, articulating a complex picture of the reality of finding a creative occupation for creative graduates. While students of some disciplines struggle to find full-time work in the creative economy, for others full-time occupation is the norm. Geography plays a crucial role also in offering graduates opportunities in creative occupations and higher salaries. The findings are contextualised in the New Labour cultural policy framework and conclusions are drawn on whether the creative industries policy construct has hidden a very problematic reality of winners and losers in the creative economy.
Roberta Comunian is lecturer in Cultural and Creative Industries at King’s College London. Previously she was Creative Industries Research Associate at the School of Arts, University of Kent and lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Southampton. She holds a European Doctorate title in Network Economy and Knowledge Management. She has been Marie Curie Fellow at University of Newcastle (Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies) investigating the relationship between creative industries, cultural policy and public supported art institutions. She has also undertaken research on knowledge transfer and creative industries within an AHRC Impact Fellowship award at the University of Leeds. She has recently been awarded an AHRC research network grant to investigate the connections between Higher Education and the Creative Economy and has recently explored in various papers the career opportunities and patterns of creative graduates in UK.
2. PASCAL GIELEN: ‘Being an Artist in a Flat Wet World’ From the 1990s, we live increasingly in a flat wet world. The network society makes relationships and cultures horizontal, while the ruling neo-liberalization generates a hyper-relativism of cultural differences. Within the dictum of the number and the market cultures and art are made liquid in the
post-Fordist economy and the creative industries. What are the effects of these transformations on a macro-sociological level for the artist and her/his creative labor on the micro-sociological level?
Pascal Gielen is director of the research center Arts in Society at the Groningen University where he is associate Professor sociology of art. He leads also the research group and book series ‘Arts in Society’ (Fontys School for Fine and Performing Arts, Tilburg). Gielen has written several books on contemporary art, cultural heritage and cultural politics.
3. ANNICK SCHRAMME: ‘Unraveling the dominant logics of the visual arts scene’ This presentation aims to identify why the visual arts scene in the region of Flanders is organized the way it is and how it can overcome the obstacles and barriers for growth, using the concept of ‘dominant logics’. From literature and case study research we could identify three separate logics. We argue that once an artist/artistic organisation can grasp the logic he or she tends to take for granted and is confronted by alternative reasoning upheld by other logics, this artist/artistic organisation is better equipped to identify opportunities to innovate and overcome obstacles for growth and development.
Annick Schramme is full professor and academic coordinator of the master in Cultural Management at the University of Antwerp and the Competence Center Management, Culture & Policy (Faculty of Applied Economics). Besides, she is academic director of the Competence Center Creative Industries at the Antwerp Management School. Over the last years she published about Arts policy, international cultural policy, heritage management, creative industries and fashion management. From 2004 until 2013 she was also advisor-expert of the Vice-Mayor for Culture and Tourism of the City of Antwerp. Finally she is member of several boards of cultural organizations and advisory committees in Flanders and the Netherlands.
4. KAREN VAN GODTSENHOVEN: ‘Between graduation and breakthrough: the 6 years of the Antwerp Six’ The ‘miracle’ of the breakthrough of the Antwerp Six (Ann Demeulemeester, Marina Yee, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs and Dirk Van Saene), more or less six years after graduation, at the British Designer Show is widely discussed and marveled at. How did it come about that 6 unknown designers from a country without any fashion credits were picked up so seemingly easy and launched into the big fashion scene? How come their images, branding, garments and styles were so striking that all the fashion press wanted to feature them? Their talent and timeliness are key factors, as well as their competitive friendship which was the engine driving their ambition and quest for perfection. Nevertheless, the ‘gap years’ in between their graduation (1980-1982) and the international breakthrough (1986) also deserves some attention: during these years, they developed and matured themselves as designers, practicing their skills and talent through different freelance jobs, government
competitions and other initiatives, slowly leading up to the moment of international exposure. This talk wants to have a close look at the importance of these kind of gap years and the key factors that contribute to a successful international career, through the case of the Antwerp Six.
Karen Van Godtsenhoven is exhibitions curator at MoMu, the Fashion Museum of the Province of Antwerp since 2009. She studied English Literature at Ghent University, and Library and Information Sciences and Gender Studies at the University of Antwerp. She recently curated the Happy birthday Dear Academie exhibition at MoMu together with Walter Van Beirendonck and wrote the chapter ‘The wonderyears of the 6+1’ for the accompanying catalogue. Karen continues to work on different thematic and designer based exhibitions and researches many designers’ archives, especially Belgian designers. One of her responsibilities includes the editing and composition of MoMu’s exhibition catalogues. She has published articles ranging from subjects such as nineteenth century bathing & sports culture through to today’s counter culture fashions and social dress codes.
