Introduction
Jakarta, Capital City of the Republic of Indonesia is a huge metropolis that never seems to sleep. With a teeming population of 10 million people, Jakarta is a cluster of multiple neighbourhoods that spreads from the city center out to neighbouring provinces.
L
ocated on the northwestern coast of the island of Java, Jakarta is the seat of Indonesia’s National Government and National Parliament, and center of Indonesia’s Banking, and Commerce. This city is, moreover, the center of Indonesia’s political world, as well as of economic and business life. Long highways, toll roads and bridges criss cross the city and connect the capital of Jakarta with cities on Java and Sumatra. Small wonder, therefore, that from early morning, long before the first rays of the sun hit the pavements, cars and motorbikes already crowd Jakarta’s highways, and millions of workers commute by trains, buses and cars to reach the office before 9 am. Whereas, in the evening hours millions of cars stream out of highrise offices to get home in the suburbs out of the city center only to create their own traffic jams. In order to avoid spending futile hours on the road many prefer to while away the time chatting with friends over a cup of coffee in Jakarta’s hundreds of upmarket malls, at the same time others will return to town to enjoy concerts, dine in style or while away the evening in discos or karaokes until deep into the night. And so, despite the grumblings of endless traffic jams, Jakarta residents would not dream of trading this daily grind for life in any other city.

And for super gigs the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium at Senayan is used. The Indoor /Outdoor Tennis Stadium and the ISTORA or Indoor Sports Stadium are venues frequently staging many international performances. The Istora can seat up to 9,500 people. Among some international music performances staged here were Deep Purple, Mick Jagger, Linkin Park, Big Wave Festival, Jakarta International Java Soulnation Festival, JakJazz Festival, Incubus, Maroon 5, N.E.R.D, Deftones, Metallica, Helloween, and Avril Lavigne.

Most often used for meetings and exhibitions, the JCC, located in the heart of Senayan, often hosts celebrity concerts. It has a large round Plenary Hall that can accommodate 5,000 people and large exhibition halls that together cover over 11,000 square meters.
For even larger gigs, organizers use the concert hall at Pantai Festival in Ancol Dreamland.

Located on Jakarta’s former Kemayoran airport, JIExpo has 5 Exhibition Halls, largest among which can seat up to 12,000 people theatre style. The highly popular annual Java Jazz where up to 9 stages are needed for world celebrities and Indonesian jazz stars to appear simultaneously, is held here annually. JIExpo is also the home of the annual Jakarta Fair.

Located on jalan Cikini Raya in Central Jakarta, Jakarta’s dedicated Art Center is named after Ismail Marzuki, Indonesia’s maestro musician and composer.
Gedung Kesenian Jakarta Interior
Gedung Kesenian Jakarta or Jakarta Performing Art Theatre is a classic building constructed in 1884, in response to the request of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, British Governor General of Java at the time. The building has been restored and today it has a stage of 24 x 17.5 meters and can accommodate up to 500 persons. GKJ is often used for traditional and modern performances, the latest being the piano recital by Wibi Soerjadi, acclaimed international pianist, best known for his sensitive renditions of the complicated works of composer Franz Liszt.
The theater seats up to 1,240 persons. The theater is also equipped with a fly tower that comes in the same height as the stage which enables the crew to change the backdrop vertically. Here the impressive dance drama Matah Ati, recounting the succession in the Mangkunegaran Dynasty and the musical Laskar Pelangi, about education of poor children on Belitung island, attracted large audiences.

akarta’s malls especially along the Sudirman Avenue and the Central Business District offer de-luxe internationally branded goods, exclusive boutiques, upscale beauty salons and spas, gyms frequented by celebrities, to entire floors of restaurants, supermarkets, bookstores, mobile shops, souvenir shops, cafes to hang out where you can enjoy free wifi service, ice rinks, cinemas and more, all under one roof. Since malls open from 10 am to 10 pm, one can watch people shopping, strolling or even studying here at all hours of the day and night.

Going into the suburbs, malls become more homely, serving the middle to upper income groups that are no less attractive yet offer more reasonable prices. These are normally packed at weekends.

Just be aware that there are authentic and “new” antiques so you must search with professional eyes. Located near the Jatinegara railway station in East Jakarta, the Jakarta Gems Centre offers three floors of kiosks and stores, all selling precious stones, semi-precious stones, rare stones or just fancy
colourful stones for necklaces, bracelets and rings. This is a wholesale market, but people can buy in bulk or at retail. Here you can find agates known as batu akik. Many Indonesians believe that some stones contain supernatural powers that can bring good luck and wealth to its wearer or to ward off evil. Pasar Baru is the oldest shopping center in Jakarta built in the early 1800s. Located near Lapangan Banteng and Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, this shopping street was, in its heydays, the exclusive haunt of the colonial elite. Today, Pasar Baru is passable only for pedestrians. The textile shops owned by Indian Bombay merchants are still there attracting their regular clientele looking for Indian silks, brocades and a variety of textiles at reasonable prices. Pasar Baru is also popular with owners and operators of beauty salons all over Indonesia since here you can find almost anything a salon may need, from shampoos, lotions, to special scissors and hair dryers. Besides these are shoes and clothes at sales prices. After a tiring stroll, stop at the nostalgic Bakmi Gang Kelinci for some of Jakarta’s most popular bowl of noodles and meatballs.

A vast beach resort in the north of Jakarta facing the Java Sea, Ancol Dreamland covers a wide 80 hectares swathe of shoreline. This is an integrated park that offers everything from beach and water sports to fun rides, swimming pools to Eco-Park
and spectacular shows where international stars perform. The Fantasy World or better known as Dufan (for Dunia Fantasi) offers 27 heart stopping rides from a giant roller coaster to the Niagara Flume and the Tornado, as well as the Dolls Castle or Istana Boneka. In the Atlantis Water Adventure there are 8 large pools offering a variety
of waves and slides. Here is also an Art Market, an Eco-Park and an Ocean Park. Ancol has three hotels where you can spend your entire long weekend and holidays in the cosy comfort of beach bungalows or hold meetings away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The latest addition to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is the Hakka Indonesia Museum, located on the east side of this huge park, which was officially opened on 30 August 2014. It is a round building inspired by the Tulou houses of the Hakka in China. Consisting of three floors, the museum relates the story of the arrival of the Chinese from mainland China to the Indonesian islands, how they settled here and assimilated with the local population.

Not many people are aware that Jakarta is also blessed with romantic tropical islands-getaway, far away from busy and noisy city streets. Pulau Bidadari Aerial Shot
T
he string of islands that lie in the Bay of Jakarta are known as Kepulauan Seribu or the Thousand Islands, which together form the Kepulauan Seribu National Park. Comprising-not quite one thousand, but some 110 large and small islands, they stretch from the nearest island called Pulau Ayer to those far out into the Java Sea like Pulau Putri, Pulau Sepa and Pulau Hantu. Some 20 islands are tourist resorts, with only 6 islands having local inhabitants. The District capital of Kepulauan Seribu is at Pulau Pramuka, located right in the midst of this cluster. The Thousand Islands are the natural water and beach playgrounds for Jakarta citizens. The islands each offer different types of recreation from just beach combing, boating, jet skiing and snorkeling, to fishing and scuba-diving further out to sea.

A number of islands such as Pulau Ayer, Pulau Pramuka, Pulau Kotok and Pulau Putri have bungalows for rent complete with facilities to enjoy island life at your leisure. To make your holiday complete, here are also Dutch colonial vestiges to explore in archaeological parks as well as nature reserves for breeding of hawksbill turtles and protection of mangrove forests. Several types of flora and fauna frequently found in the Thousand Islands include coral reefs, starfish, sand starfish, Betok fish (Anabas Testudineus Bloch) and ornamental fish such as the Sargent Major fish among others.

Regular boats leave Marina Ancol to the various islands at 8.0 am and 9.0 am, returning around 1.0 pm or 2.0 pm. Speedboats are also available for rent. There are also special departures to the tourist resorts.

Kepulauan Seribu
The Paradiso Islands of Pulau Ayer, Bidadari and Untung Jawa Islands nearest and within a half an hour reach from Jakarta’s Marina in Ancol are the islands of Bidadari, Ayer and Untung Jawa. These are recreation resorts, that come complete with cottages and water sports facilities such as banana boats, jet skis and more. On Pulau Ayer are cottages that “float” on the sea with interior decorations of exotic Asmat textiles and sculptures.
Pulau Onrust And while you are island hopping, visit Onrust, which is a heritage and archaeological park. In 1613 Onrust island used to be a shipyard for Dutch vessels, and later became Batavia’s defense against foreign invaders. Today one can still see remnants of the fortress called the Martello Bastion at Pulau Kelor.
Pulau Pramuka At Pulau Pramuka, situated in the center of the Thousand Islands, is where you will find the office of the head of Kepulauan Seribu district government. Therefore, Pulau Pramuka has the largest population and the best amenities, complete with schools, mosque and other facilities including internet connections. Pulau Pramuka is known for its conservation and breeding site of hawksbill turtles and the protection of mangrove forests. Visitors are invited to feed and release hatchlings to the sea. There is also a butterfly reserve where you can watch the many species of colorful butterflies grow from cocoon to transforming themselves into beautiful butterflies. Around Pulau Pramuka are crystal clear waters that are great for snorkeling and diving. The seafloor around here is flat, so underwater photographers love to take macro-photos of the wonderful creatures living in these seas. You can also feed sharks which are well protected in shark cages. Reachable within 2 to 2.5 hours by boat from Marina Ancol or Muara Angke, Pulau Pramuka has also a “floating” restaurant to enjoy your meals at sunset.

Pulau Tidung One of the largest islands in the Kepulauan Seribu archipelago, Pulau Tidung offers captivating panoramic views across the sea. Most favorite spot is the Bridge of Love that connects the Large Tidung with the Small Tidung island. This bridge is where young lovers pledge their vows to love each other ever after while romantically watching the sun slowly disappear on the horizon under an orange sky.

Pulau Putri, Pulau Sepa and Pulau Pantara These are among the furthest out into the Java Sea, and for this reason waters surrounding the islands are still crystal clear with colorful coral reefs teeming with fish, and are ideal for diving and fishing. Pulau Putri has cottages facing the sea, facilities for diving, glass bottom boats and even an undersea aquarium. It also offers sunset cruises. At Pulau Sepa you can try a marine walk, where visitors can walk along the bottom of the sea
to enjoy the underwater marine life and feed the fish without having to dive. Here you can go snorkeling, scuba diving, jetski, fishing, canoeing and lots more. While Pulau Pantara is built for groups. It has 90 cottages and facilities including meeting room and outbound facilities. The islands are around 2.5 hours by luxury speedboat from Ancol Marina. The Bogor Palace Built by Sir Stamford Raffles, is the out-oftown palace used by the President. It has an extensive art collection of paintings and statues collected by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno. On its green lawns are spotted deer, grazing leisurely under shady trees.

A mere one hour drive south of Jakarta via the toll road, is the town of Bogor. Once called “Buitenzorg”, meaning Sans Souci, the Bogor Botanical Gardens lie right in the city center, while the Bogor Presidential Palace stands nestled as a gem amongst the green vegetation with imposing Mt. Salak volcano as its background. Built in 1744, both the extensive 150 hectares gardens and the Bogor Palace became the resident of Governor General Daendels and British Governor General Sir Stamford Raffles. In the gardens today stands a memorial dedicated to his wife, Olivia Raffles, who died in 1818. Take time to enjoy a leisurely walk across the paths and avenues lined with different species of flowering cannas, stroll by the manicured lawns and admire the 3,000 varieties of orchids found in the Orchid Garden, or just laze in the shade of large ancient trees. The Bogor Botanical Gardens counts over 400 species of palm trees, 5,000 different kinds of trees gathered from around the tropical world. Records show that the Bogor Botanical Gardens harbors 3,504 plant species, 1,273 genus in 199 families and therefore, contains the greatest number of specimens among the world’s Botanical Gardens.
