E d i t o r i Ea d l itorial On the Way with Jesus
F
rom their first meeting with Jesus, according to the New Testament gospels, Jesus’ disciples accompanied him on his travels. During these travels they listened to him and asked him questions, and he taught them. He was preparing them for a time when they would disperse, go into the world and spread his teachings further. As he was saying his farewells, he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere,” (Mark 16:15). This verse motivates those who, hundreds of years later, have decided to follow Jesus Christ. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th was marked in the history of Christianity by a huge Protestant movement that had its beginnings in the 15th century, the goal of which is the evangelism of the entire world. In the enthusiasm of this movement the Slavic convention also had its beginnings, joining together the Slavic people of North America, and later becoming the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention of USA and Canada. Many individuals had a part to play within this convention in the spreading of the Good News of salvation and following Jesus Christ as one’s personal savior, in North America and in the Czech and Slovak Republics. One of these precious individuals in the convention was Dan Widlicka. Despite the fact that he never hid his age, we did not entertain the possibility that he could soon leave us. His smiling face and welcoming words “Jak se máš?” (How are you?) will be missed. “On the Way with Jesus” is the theme of the 104th Czechoslovak Baptist Convention of USA and Canada. From his youth, Dan walked faithfully with Jesus. Despite the many changes that took place from the 20th to the 21st century, Dan never changed his approach to his fellow man, because his relationship with Jesus was strong. Love dominated his being. With love he welcomed us, with love he bade us farewell. Conversations with him ended with the words “God is so great.” The words of Paul in his letter to Timothy describe Dan precisely: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me on that day: and not to me only, but unto all of them also that have longed for his appearing,” (2 Timothy 4:7,8). Na cestě s Ježíšem
O
Během těch cest Mu naslouchali, kladli Mu otázky a On je vyučoval. Konec 19. a začátek 20. století se do historie křesťanství zapsaly ohromným hnutím protestantů, jehož počátky sahají už do 15. století, s cílem zevangelizovat celý svět. V tomto pohnutém nadšení vznikla i Slovanská konvence, sdružující Slovany v severní Americe, později Československá konvence baptistů USA a Kanady. Československé konvence baptistů USA a Kanady.

From the President
I
remember the excitement of starting out on vacation with our family when I was young. We were all packed in the car and setting out together on a road trip to Florida. Days of driving lay ahead. School and home were left behind. New sights, warm weather sea and sand were at the end of the journey. It is funny how large a place some happy experiences hold in our memories. It is similar, I think, with our Convention gatherings. Just a few days in July, but oh, how much we pack into that time together. I hope I am stirring up in you a desire to be present for our 104th annual Convention July 11–14 at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. The Convention theme is On the Way With Jesus. What a wonderful image this is to reflect on and be encouraged and recharged by. Brother Dan Widlicka, who went to be with the Lord so recently, used to tell the story of driving with some of his friends as a young man to the Convention in Chicago. He told it as an adventure fondly remembered. We often do things on the spur of the moment when we are young. Perhaps we should more often when we are old. In any case it wasn’t a one-time trip for Dan, but became a habit repeated over and over again. By the time of my first introduction to the Convention, brother Dan had become a sturdy fixture of the Convention community: a well-beloved leader, former president and unrivaled song leader. Brother Dan’s funeral was held at Scranton Road Bible Church in Cleveland, the same place I first saw him leading the singing, and where he welcomed me
4
warmly as a new pastor to the Convention. During the luncheon following the service, people were invited to share memories of “Pastor Dan.” One after another individuals stood up to tell stories and relate the loving impact which “Pastor Dan” and “Teacher Jane” had had on their lives. I said to Darko Siracki afterwards, “It was like we went to a funeral and a testimony meeting broke out.” One young woman shared how she asked for prayer that she would find a Christian husband and that Dan and Jane had been only too happy to take up her request. Sure enough in about two years, God answered that prayer. Friends have asked why I go to this church and not one of my own ethnic background, she observed. I told them it was because they loved me here. What a wonderful expression this is of the Spirit of Christ in a people and place. This is something with which we are well familiar through Dan Widlicka’s long service and fellowship in the Convention. The passing of dear saints and longtime friends of the Convention marks a changing of the guard. We have been richly blessed to travel some good distance with them. Now they have finished their course and we rejoice in that. We, though, are still ON THE WAY WITH JESUS. His familiar voice at the head of the line calls out reassuringly: “Steady troops! Close ranks! We have new recruits to welcome, and further deeds of faith and love to complete. March on! March On!” Looking forward to seeing you in Meadville in July. Stan Mantle

V

“Přátelé se mne ptali, proč nechodím do sboru se svými krajany,” podotkla mladá žena. “Protože tady mne mají rádi, řekla jsem jim.” Jaký to užasný projev Ducha Svatého působící skrze lidi a místo. Vyrovnat! Vítáme nové síly a další skutky víry a lásky stojící před námi. Pochodem vchod! Pochodem vchod!”

Baptist World Alliance From the General Secretary
BWA Challenge and Opportunity
C
hristians everywhere should analyze carefully the study on “The Global Religious Landscape” recently released by The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The report is available at: http://www.pewforum.org/uploadedFiles/ Topics/Religious_Affiliation/globalReligionfull.pdf The study is based on data from censuses and other demographic sources, collected from 232 countries and territories and reflecting people’s self-identification. It reveals that eight in 10 people in the world identify themselves with a religious group— a sign that people are still engaged in the search for meaning in life. The 2.2 billion people who self-identify as Christians comprise 31.5 percent of the world’s population. Christianity continues to be the faith group with the largest number of adherents, with Muslims at 23.2 percent. According to the study, in 2010, 26 percent of Christians lived in Europe, down from 66 percent in 1910, with 24 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean, 24 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, 13 percent in Asia and the Pacific, and 12 percent in North America. It is noteworthy that almost one in four Christians alive today resides in sub-Saharan Africa, where the 21st Baptist World Congress will be held in 2015. The 1.1 billion Catholics make up 48 percent of those who self-identify as Christians—up from an estimated 291 million in 1910. Thirty-seven percent of the Christian population is Protestant and 12 percent comprise people of Greek and Russian Orthodox persuasion. Christians, the report states, have a median age of 30 years. Significantly, 16 percent of the population—1.1 billion people—declare themselves unaffiliated with any religion and they make up the third-largest group, coming behind Christians and Muslims. Seventy- five per cent of these persons reside in Asia—700 million in China and 72 million

in Japan—and 50 million are United States residents. The large number of the so-called “nones” suggests that believers in Christ have a major challenge, but also a great opportunity. We need to share our faith with those who have not yet been incorporated into Christ’s body, the church. Notably, some of the 1.1 billion who claim no religious affiliation say that they believe in God or in a higher power. The percentage of unaffiliated groups holding belief in God is, for example, seven percent among Chinese adults, 30 percent among French adults and 68 percent among U.S. adults. While the Pew study does not examine trends, a comparison of its findings with other available data shows the continuing decline in the number of Christians residing in the Middle East, the birthplace of the faith. What might we do to help change this sad situation? From the welter of data provided by the Pew Study on “The Global Religious Landscape,” there is much to challenge Christians who are deeply committed to fulfilling the
mission God has assigned the church. As we are reminded of the many people who have not yet discovered their true identity in Christ, let us make use of every opportunity we have to know Christ Jesus and to make Christ known.

uring the Baptist Youth World Conference in Singapore, July 17-21, participants will be assigned to “family groups.” Each group comprises 25 persons from various countries. Each family group meets at least once daily to discuss the Bible study that was presented during the morning plenary session. It is an opportunity for persons to go deeper into the Word of God and to discern
ways in which the Bible speaks to their own context. An added benefit is the friendships that develop during these “mini international gatherings.” Family group participants will experience the joy of making friends with persons from countries and cultures other than their own, enriching their lives and experiences.

Walking Wisely In a Wacky World Judy Shoff Excerpt from a study of the book of Proverbs (Part 2)
Wisdom
Y
ou will recall from the previous article that Solomon tells us in the book of Proverbs that a wise person: 1. welcomes instruction, 2. admits when he is wrong, 3. admits when he has a need, 4. admits that he doesn’t know everything. This is the essence of humility. Therefore, in humility the most sensible thing we need to do is figure out what is most important in life and make sure we learn and put into practice what we have learned. In the book of Proverbs we learn that God is to be feared. In Proverbs 1:7 Solomon tells us that true wisdom is to fear God. When Moses went up Mt. Sinai to receive God’s law, there was thunder, there was lightning, and the people trembled with fear, for they knew that God was there. When Isaiah had the vision of the Lord, he fell on his face and cried, “Woe is me for I am a man of unclean lips…. and I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty,” (Isaiah 6:5). God is to be feared. We also learn that God is to be revered. A healthy fear of the Almighty brings reverence for who He is, for His position of ultimate authority, and for the privilege we have to express that reverence in prayer and worship. There is the admonition throughout Scripture that God is to be served. God’s people are to serve Him. To me, this means the practical living out of what we know about God and what He created His children for. Far too many of us believers are content to sit in comfort in our homes and churches, forgetting that serving God means reaching out and showing those around us that we belong to the highest authority, God Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth. 10
Proverbs 3 describes the character qualities of a wise person: kindness, truthfulness, joyfulness, confidence, generosity, and to be peaceful and content. Wow – what a checklist!!! These qualities should be the deepest desire of our hearts as we begin each and every new day. Proverbs 3 also provides a list of “do nots” for the person who seeks to possess wisdom: vs. 1 – Do not forget my teaching. vs. 3 – Do not let kindness and truth leave you. vs. 5 – Do not lean on your own understanding. vs. 7 – Do not be wise in your own eyes. vs. 11 – Do not reject discipline or reproof. vs. 25 – Do not be afraid. vs. 27 – Do not withhold verbal compliments or rewards. vs. 31 – Do not envy or be jealous. Seeking wisdom and living in wisdom is the fundamental challenge of the book of Proverbs. Jesus continued this challenge as He instructs His followers, “In the same way, let your light shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven,” (Matthew 5:16). Let your light shine, that’s a command. It’s the basic command as to why the Lord Jesus leaves us in this sinful world. He reminds us that we are to be actively shining forth His light wherever we go. So now you know why I always request “This Little Light of Mine, I’m gonna’ let it shine” when Bob Dvorak leads us in the Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing at the Convention each year.!!! It reminds me to “shine” the love of God, who is the source of all true wisdom, to a world that is hopeless and dying because they do not know the Eternal Almighty God— our Lord and Savior.

Moudře kráčet neobvyklým světem Judy Shoffová Výňatek ze studie knihy Přísloví (2. část)
Moudrost
P
Zdravá bázeň k Všemohoucímu vzbuzuje úctu a respekt k Němu samému, k Jeho svrchovanosti a my máme výsadu tuto úctu vyjádřit v modlitbě a při bohoslužbě.
Vol 39, No 2, 13

Song of Songs 3:1
ell me exactly where you lost the fellowship of Christ and I will tell you the most likely place to rediscover Him. Did you lose Him in the closet, in what you considered to be unanswered prayer? Then your prayer closet is where you must seek Him. Did you lose fellowship with Christ through sin? Then the only way you will find Him is by giving up your sin and by seeking through the Holy Spirit to subdue any area of your life or body in which the lust for sin still abides. Did you lose Christ by neglecting the Scriptures? Then you must find Him in the Scriptures. The saying “Look for something where you dropped it, for it is there,” is also true here. So look for Christ where you left Him, for He has not gone away. Yet it is hard work to go back for Christ. John Bunyan (1628–1688) told us in The Pilgrim’s Progress that Pilgrim discovered the most difficult path he had ever traveled was the road back to the Arbor of Ease where he had lost his roll. To travel twenty miles ahead is always easier than to be required to travel even one mile back for something lost. Therefore be very careful once you rediscover your Master to cling to Him. Again, how is it you lost fellowship with Christ? One would have thought you would never have parted ways with such a precious Friend, one whose very presence is so sweet, whose words are so comforting, and whose fellowship is so valued! How is it that you did not keep your eyes focused on Him every second, for fear of losing sight of Him? Although you have let Him go, what a great mercy that you are now seeking Him even though you mournfully sigh, “If only I knew where to find Him!” Keep on seeking, for you know how dangerous it is to be without the fellowship of your Lord. Without Christ you are like a sheep without its shepherd, like a tree without water for its roots, or like a dry and withered leaf in a hurricane. You feel separated from the sustenance of the Tree of Life. Seek Him with your whole heart and you will find Him. Remember to surrender yourself completely to the search, and ultimately you will surely find Him to be still your true joy and delight. Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (19 June 1834–31 January 1892) was a British Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is known as the “Prince of Preachers.” He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, and understanding and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. Spurgeon was pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was a prolific author of many types of works, including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people. Look Unto Me represents some of Spurgeon’s most powerful devotions.

Revered Daniel G. Widlicka 1920–2013 Dear Friends of the Czechoslovak Convention:

hank you for the privilege of sharing a few thoughts regarding our dear brother in the Lord Jesus Christ, Pastor Daniel Widlicka. Here, he was known as Pastor Dan to thousands of people over the past 43 years and more, in this challenging but rich inner-city neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. I wish the CD from the memorial service was retrievable so you could “feel” the love” from people from a multiplicity of cultures, ethnicities and races. I wish he could have heard it himself. I came to SRBC (Scranton Road Bible Church) in the fall of 1988. Apart from God clearly leading my family (Debbie my wife, sons Jeremy and Chad) here, we had no clue what we were walking into. Our connection was Pastor Dan, one of the men responsible for the start of Greater Cleveland Youth for Christ in 1944. I had just come off 11.5 years with YFC, serving the last eight in Cleveland’s eastside neighborhood. God was grooming me for pastoral ministry, but I didn’t have a clue where to start. What we didn’t know was that the church, about 35 people strong (half were Czech; half were Caucasian), had been praying for a younger pastor to work along side of “PD.” I was 37 then. Now, 25 years later, guess who the old one is? We have a line at Scranton. “Here at Scranton Road, fact or fiction?” We have more stories to tell than the Naked City adventures. Pastor Dan and Jane remained in the thick of things, right up to his home-going. What are some of the lessons we learned from them? Perseverance. When many churches fled the city, they remained firm and steadfast in both example and service. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 describes their stance and their heart. Prayer. Nothing happened without prayer. During the worship service, 6 a.m. on Tuesday mornings, noon every Wednesday, mid-week growth groups and spontaneous gatherings of seeking the Lord. We witnessed healings, guidance, empowerment and many people miracles that only God could get the credit for. And guess who always was in the midst of that? In fact, we thank God that prayer put PD’s cancer into remission for 17 years! He saw the fellowship grow and change in worship style, congregational make-up, name and ethnicity. He even endured the name change from Scranton Road Baptist Church to Scranton Road Bible Church. Did our beliefs change? Not really. But he conceded that in this neighborhood, a more neutral name was better in welcoming people from various or no past religious affiliations.

Daniel and Jane Widlicka
Pastor Dan. He loved Jesus, his wife Jane and his flock. He didn’t retreat when many could have. I am certain that he didn’t fully “agree” with our changes, but the cause of the gospel always trumped his (and our!) personal preference. Together, Pastor Dan and Jane served once per month at the local City Mission (where he was saved in 1937!), hosted a growth group twice per month, and shared the gospel at the Neighborhood Hot Meal Outreach every last Saturday! Energy abounded: love and service for Jesus, his wife and morning walks for both physical and spiritual health. His passing devastated his home neighborhood. “A godly man has a great reputation outside of the church.” The list could go on and on. But on a personal note, no one is more appreciative than my family. Like the Widlickas, we also raised two sons. We had no significant pastoral experience. Many counseled that when a new pastor comes in, the former should leave. Not here! We are grateful to God that they not only stayed, but also became dear, dear friends, encouragers and examples to Debbie, Jeremy, Chad and myself. Priceless!!!! One month short of 93 years – what a life! The legacy is not through yet. We will always be indebted to the Widlickas, and will support the CSBC as long as we are here. With His love, Joe Abraham, Pastor, Scranton Road Bible Church

Drazí přátelé Československé konvence!
J
Přál bych si, aby cédéčko ze vzpomínkového shromáždění oživilo atmosféru, aby ste mohli pocítit tu lásku lidí z mnoha různých kultur, národů a ras. Přál bych si, aby to mohl slyšet i on sám. Vytrvalost. Modlitba. Nic nejde bez modlitby. Během shromáždění, v šest hodin v úterý ráno a každou středu v poledne modlitba, uprostřed týdne vzdělávací skupina a spontánní sejití při hledání Pána.
Vol 39, No 2, 13

he still morning air, at once fresh, brisk and damp, is a tangible presence in the air. As I walk out of my dorm room at Alderson-Broaddus College Campus in West Virginia, I look out over the tree-covered hills surrounding the campus. The morning mist rises slowly, uniformly, as if unveiling ancient mysteries hidden in the night to be discovered by the sun and the coming day. In the stillness of the morning, it is easy to understand why the Celts believed that at dawn the fabric between the worlds thinned and one could step into the otherworld. I am a young teen, naive and with a head full of trivial concerns, but when I go out and walk at dawn I shed the teenage costume and take my place in the ancient universe as an ageless soul. It was in this state as I walked through the campus that I happened upon another such ageless being. He was a very tall man, elderly in appearance yet walking with the sprightly step of a youth. His name was Dan Widlicka. As soon as he spotted me he said hello, and with a welcoming smile asked me to join him as he sat on one of several stone slabs which served as an outdoor classroom during the school year. We sat there together, enjoying the hushed magic of the waking world around us. He told me he had come out here to pray. I understood the sentiment, as I find it nearly impossible not to converse with God when I find myself in solitude surrounded by beauty. What he was talking about, however, was a little different from what I had in mind. Dan pulled out a little black notebook, and as he flipped through its pages explained, “I pray for people. I have their name and a photo of them so I can remember what they look like. So much more comes to mind when I can see their faces. Then, if I know what they need prayer

for, I write it down.” And sure enough the little black book was filled with people’s names and faces and prayer requests. I was awed by the private prayers this man was moved to offer for these people. That he genuinely cared was evident in his eyes. He asked if he could pray for me, and I asked if I could do the same. So we prayed for one another, and then he added my name to his little black book. I walked away filled with gratitude and the sense that we had indeed rested in the otherworld awhile. I donned my teenage costume once more, and have worn many others besides since that morning. Very often, though, I still step out of whatever costume I’m wearing, take my place in the ancient universe, and pray. Every once in a while I remember an early morning and a loving man who took the time to pray for others and encouraged me to do the same. I suspect there are a great many people, including myself, that don’t even know how different their lives would be had Dan not been moved to care for them in this giving, unselfish way. Thank you, Dan. Elizabeth J. Fields

an and I were in the prayer room in the chapel one evening before a convention worship service at A-B College in 2011. We were talking about my husband, Paul Shereda, and Dan was telling me stories about his relationship with Paul and his father, Rev. Joseph J. Shereda. It was an especially meaningful time, and we had prayer. Dan was so good to me, he was good to us, he was good to everyone. I am praying for him and Jane in these difficult days. Paul always spoke so highly of him and looked forward to seeing him when he could at the Convention. We always looked forward to seeing the “coat.” Kathy Shereda, pastor of High Hills Baptist Church, Jarratt, Virginia

Vynáša obžalobu i hrozbu voči nehodným kňazom, ktorí si prisvojili Božie vlastníctvo a utvorili
Veľkú duchovnú letargiu a náboženskú ľahostajnosť v Izraeli zapríčinili a vyvolali práve kňazi. „Odbočili z cesty Hospodinovej a svojou náukou mnohých priviedli k pádu.“ (8) Prisvojili si Božie vlastníctvo a svoje postavenie

použili na zabezpečenie vlastného monopolu. Mali byť poslami Božími, no stali sa príčinou morálnej i duchovnej zvrátenosti a celkového úpadku Izraela. Preto im Hospodin vytýkal: „Ale vy ste odbočili z cesty, náukou ste mnohých priviedli k pádu: skazili ste zmluvu s Lévim.“ (8) Medzi Bohom a pokolením Léviho bola ustanovená zmluva o živote a pokoji.
niečo aj zažívate.“ (1–3) Už ste opovrhnutí a ponížení pred celým ľudom, lebo ste nezachovávali moje cesty a dovolili ste si robiť to, čo nenávidím — uprednostňovať osoby. Tí sa báli a mali úctu pred Božím menom. Pravdivé naučenie bolo v ich ústach a nepravda sa nenašla v ich perách. V pokoji a úprimnosti chodili so svojím Bohom a mnohých odvrátili od neprávosti. Nasledoval ich príklad a hynul vo svojej nešľachetnosti. Opustili svojho Boha, jediného živého Boha a uctievali pohanské mŕtve modly. Nastala veľká duchovná a morálna zvrátenosť. Ak sme my neverní, On zostáva verný. Boh sa teda nemení, meníme sa my. Nie Boh,
Vol 39, No 2, 13
Izraeliti to nemohli urobiť. No ani prítomnosť samého Boha nezobudila svedomie izraelského ľudu. V mene svojej tradície zajali, odsúdili a popravili vlastného Boha prišlého v tele ako najväčšieho zločinca. Prečo to Boh dovolil?, pýtame sa. Prečo stále ustupoval? Boh nie je ako človek. Nie je násilník, nie je agresor, nevstupuje tam, kde mu nedovolia. Kto nechce spoznať Boha a svoj postoj voči Nemu, toho nikto nepresvedčí a neprinúti k tomu — ani sám Boh. Pán Boh má prístup len do pokorných sŕdc. Pred našou tvrdohlavosťou a bezočivosťou Boh ustupuje. Pán Boh v závere dejín odstráni zlo i páchateľov zla.

he time is here! It’s finally spring! Usually this means new plants and leaves on trees and birds chirping on branches, but for some reason, this year the first few days of spring brought a lot more cold air and SNOW! When I was a child, I loved to play in the snow with my brothers. I’d make snow angels and go sledding with them. Sometimes we’d throw snowballs at each other till our noses were blue and our pants were soaked. One of my favorite things to do in the snow was to build snowmen! You can make them as big or as little as you like. You can give them a hat or a scarf – decorate them in any way you choose! You can make a boy snowman, or a girl snowman, you can even make a family of snowmen! The sad thing about snowmen, though, is that they are only pretend people. They sit in your yard or on your porch until the sun comes out, and then before you know it, poof—they’re gone! That’s because anyone can make a snowman, but only God can make real people. 22
When God makes real people, He can make us any way He wants. He can give us red hair or brown hair, or a lot of other colors… as well as blue eyes or green eyes…. He might even make us wear glasses! But the best part of God making us is that, unlike the snowmen, we are real. We are living, breathing human beings that live on the earth God created for us. Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” Isn’t that so wonderful? God loved us so much that not only are we real people (who won’t melt in the morning sun), but we are all different and created by Him. We were all knitted together by God, who formed us and gave us life. I pray that as spring finally arrives and the rest of the snow melts, you will remember how quickly a snowman will melt, and you will thank God for giving us life, both on this earth and in heaven, life that the sun can never melt!
