Yosoko! Welcome to the ninth edition of CAMERA JAPAN! The previous year has been an exceptionally good year for Japanese cinema, with the highest amount of homegrown films released in decades. From this huge supply we have selected some of the finest pearls, which offer a good cross section of what is currently being produced in Japan. With our special theme programme, titled J-Dream, we shine our light on all that is weird, wondrous and fantastical in Japanese art this year. More than ever we are showing films with lots of fighting, where gallons of blood are being spilled, or in which daily life is suddenly turned upside down by an inexplicable occurrence. For easy reference we have marked all events related to J-Dream with in our programme. But besides all the film violence there are also more contemplated, comedic and elegant productions on offer. Further there will also be several lectures, and live performances by Cuushe & aus. And again our foyer will be full of energy thanks to all the dance performances and activities that will take place. It is with pride that we present the 2014 edition of CAMERA JAPAN, which would never have been possible without the support of our subsidisers, sponsors and partners, and our festival team. We hope you will enjoy the result of all our efforts, because nothing is more rewarding than seeing everyone have a great time at CAMERA JAPAN! 5

And the Mud Ship Sails Away Soshite Dorobune wa Yuku
WATANABE Hirobumi
The life of 36-year-old Takashi, unemployed and living with his grandmother, revolves around playing pachinko, bowling, watching tv and hanging around with his equally aimless best friend. But then a previously unknown half-sister shows up, who starts pushing him to make something of his life. A surreal slacker comedy about ‘nothingness’, shot in black-and-white, and made on a shoestring budget by a crew of four. The grandmother in the film is played by director WATANABE’s real-life grandmother, aged 96.

Comedian ABE Sadao, sporting a wonderful bowl cut, plays a man specialized in the art of ‘dogeza’: the traditional act of apologizing by prostrating oneself in front of another person to ask forgiveness. With his Tokyo Apology Centre he helps customers who can only solve their problems by performing the ultimate formal apology. Among them is an arrogant young lady who has some serious beef with a powerful yakuza clan, and a filmmaker that has managed to anger an entire country. A mother sends her two daughters on a journey to their estranged father, who is dying of cancer. With a fruit basket that says ‘get well soon’ and a brand new camera to take his picture, they travel to the hospital, only to find out he is already dead. While they would rather return home right away, they decide to attend the funeral. Despite the grim storyline, a charming little film about forgiveness, with lots of black humour.

Talented hip-hop dancer Ken moves to Okinawa, hoping to make a few bucks by performing on the street. But his first welcome on the island is getting beat up by the local gang of thugs. Nonetheless he manages to catch the attention of Iwao Shinjo, an old Ryukyu dance master who believes ‘a good dancer is also a good fighter.’ The old man takes Ken under his wing, teaching him not only the art of Okinawa’s folk dance, but also of Ryukyu karate. Shojo wa isekai de tatakatta
KANEKO Shusuke
Sci-fi action film set in a universe in which all guns and nuclear weapons have been eradicated. Violence is still an issue though, especially since a bunch of mysterious blue invaders from another dimension decided to cause havoc in modern-day Japan. Luckily an elite group of four female assassins is there to protect society from evil. And to bring joy to the world as a cutesy J-pop girl band, of course. TAKEDA Rina (Dead Sushi), who has a black belt in karate, stars as one of the heroines. A film meant for people that don’t take their cinema too seriously.

Old school-friends Ayako and Yukari have not seen each other for years, but when they meet by chance they quickly rekindle their relationship. Ayako even helps down-on-her-luck Yukari by finding her a new job. But then Ayako’s friendly behaviour shifts to bullying, hinting at a troubled past. A haunting thriller, shot in the bleak style of European arthouse cinema. By continuously switching perspective director SAKAMOTO slowly lets viewers solve the puzzle. Winner of several awards at the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Berlinale.

Fukuda Tatsuo, called Fuku-chan by his many friends, is seen as the go-to-guy in case of any emerging problems, especially by his neighbours, all single men like himself. With his chubby appearance and his positive, calm attitude Fukuchan invokes trust in everyone he meets. But behind his cheerful smile lies an old childhood trauma, which reemerges when he meets a woman from his past. Part of the genius of this charming and endearing comedy by Fine, Totally Fine-director FUJITA Yosuke lies in the casting: Fuku-chan is played by well-known comedienne OSHIMA Miyuki, famous for her comedic impersonations of old men.

UCHIDA Eiji
Nami has had what you would euphemistically call ‘a troubled childhood’. She has been abandoned by everybody, which lead her to the conclusion that we are born alone, live alone, and die alone. From this philosophy an unusual hobby is formed: she likes to follow lonely souls, or, as Nami calls them, solitarians. Her new pet project is the elderly man Shiomi, a grumpy old man that has lost all faith. But as soon as a Christian missionary turns up to convert him, things start getting very violent.

Four high school girls obsessed with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan are filming a martial arts movie in an abandoned school when a group of thugs shows up. Lead by a mysterious woman in a red lacquer jumpsuit, the gangsters soon take over the building and block all communications. But of course they are no match for these high kicking angels in their short skirts. 17-year-old MIYAHARA Kanon, who plays one of the girls, is a former champion of the All Japan Boys’ and Girls’ Karatedo Championships.

Five seemingly random women are taken against their will to Commander Charles, who informs them that the fate of humanity is in their hands. They are chosen to fight a bunch of rubbery monsters who threaten to destroy earth. In order to beat them they will have to combine their powers, which lets them use the lethal technique ‘Women Tornado’. But the only thing these women have in common is that their family name references the colour of their battle suit. Witty parody of the Super Sentai genre (which includes the Power Rangers). From the director of last year’s festival hit HK: Forbidden Super Hero.

Japan 2013, 70 min, Colour, English subtitles. Director & Script: SAKASHITA Yuichiro. Distribution: Skip City.
SAKASHITA Yuichiro SAKASHITA Yuichiro (Hiroshima, *1986) began his career as a director with the short film Beatles in 2011, winning an award at Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival. Kanagawa University of Fine Arts, Office of Film Research is his graduation film as well as his first feature film.
For his graduation project and feature debut SAKASHITA Yuichiro decided to film the world he knows best: that of lazy art students that never hand in their assignments on time, arrogant professors that boss everyone around and incomprehensible bureaucratic rules. SAKASHITA follows a young teaching assistant who is slowly getting fed up with all of this and is on the verge of quitting, when he is asked to cover up a theft by the three students. Don’t let the formal title fool you: this is a delightful, ironic look at the world of fine art studies.

Impressive and powerful debut by former soft-porn actress MIZUI Maki, who previously worked as an assistant to splatter-king NISHIMURA Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police) and SONO Sion (The Room). She based Kept, about a serial rapist who abducts three young women, on her own experiences as a sex crime victim.
Sequel to KITANO Takeshi’s Kids Return (1996), which focused on high school dropouts Shinji and Masaru. Now ten years later, the old friends meet again. In some respect they have both achieved their goals in life, with Masaru becoming a yakuza and Shinji becoming professional boxer. But both have also failed to reach the top they were aiming for. After being forced to lose his fights for money Shinji decided to quit boxing. Masaru, who has just been released from prison, encourages him to give it one last shot, while at the same time trying to bring new glory to his fading yakuza clan.

Japan 2012, 114 min, Colour, English subtitles. Director & Script:YOSHIDA Yasuhiro. Camera: KIMURA Shinya. Music: KIDA Shunsuke. Distribution: Bitters End.
On the remote island of Minami-Daito most children leave when they are 15 years old, moving 360 kilometers away to Okinawa for their secondary education. Yuna, the sweet but serious leader of a traditional music circle, will follow that same path, just like her sister and brother before her. While she prepares for her departure, she worries what will happen to her father, who has lived apart from her mother for some years. And she falls in love, with a handsome, shy boy from a neighbouring island. A wonderful and melancholic coming-of-age tale, set to the beautiful tunes of Okinawa’s folk music.

They are forced to enter the race by a mysterious maniac, who threatens to inject their loved ones with a deadly poison if they don’t comply. A Japanese fairy tale tells the story of how a Raccoon and a Fox witnessed a man burying a bag of gold. Transforming themselves into humans they made a bet: the winner would be the one who could convince the man to turn over the gold. But they must remain human until one of them wins. French-Turkish filmmaking duo GIOVANETTI and ZENCIRCI turned this classic piece of folklore into a fascinating realistic drama, set in modern-day Japan.

Okano Yuuichi lives with his demented mother just outside of Nagasaki. A handful of joyous and painful memories are slowly pushing her away from reality. Finally Yuuichi decides that he can’t handle to take care of her anymore, and puts her in a nursing home. Director MORISAKI Azuma, 86 years old and still going strong, shows us the closed world of dementia in a beautiful and touching manner. Thanks to lots of humor, the light tone, and the lack of sentimentality, the film never gets too sad or heavy. Awarded numerous prizes at various international film festivals, and voted by many Japanese film critics as the best film of 2013.

The Tale of Iya Iya monogatari - oku no hito
TSUTA Tetsuichiro
‘A work of instant and startling brilliance’, aldus de Britse krant The Telegraph.. A small rural town in a mountainous area is threatened by modernisation and migration. Only the elderly and the stubborn seem to stay, while the young flee to Tokyo. Second-time director TSUTA Tetsuichiro (28) depicts this transition with stunning views of the wilderness, a tender pace and a hint of magic. Among the wonderful characters inhabiting the valley are an elderly farmer and his adopted daughter, a depressed Tokyo salaryman and a group of foreigners protesting the construction of a tunnel. ‘A work of instant and startling brilliance’, according to British newspaper, The Telegraph.

LEE Sang-Il
Must-see voor alle westernliefhebbers. Remake of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 western by Japanese-Korean director LEE Sang-Il, who changed the setting from the Wild West to Hokkaido, in the far north of Japan. Ken Watanabe plays the Eastwood role, as an ex-samurai who decides to come out of retirement one last time when he is hired to revenge the mutilation of a young prostitute. By mixing a great story and genre tropes with Japanese elements, LEE makes a film that is both wonderful on its own merits, and a fitting homage to the original.

OCHIAI Ken
71-year-old actor FUKUMOTO Seizo is Japan’s most famous kirareyaku, a swordsman whose job it is to die a spectacular death on film. After 50 years of getting slashed and sliced (and dying more than 50,000 times!) he plays his first lead role in Uzumasa Limelight: as a stuntman named Kamiyama. While he is loved by his colleagues and respected for his sword fighting skills, his fading physical abilities and a change in studio leadership force him to retire. A sweet, nostalgic tale of old age and devotion.

HASHIGUCHI Ryosuke
Series of six comedic sketches that observe the behaviour of ordinary people in groups. What connects them is their feeling of isolation, caused by discrimination and social restrictions. The only exceptions are the fetishists in the second to last vignette. By dressing up in full-body tights (called ‘zentai’ in Japanese) and hanging out together in a private karaoke room they are able to gain the freedom they are longing for.

Japan 2013, 90 min, Colour, English subtitles. Director: KIZAKI Fuminori. Script: HIROTA Mitsutaka. Distribution: Showgate.
Based on the video game of the same name from 2009, this gloriously overthe-top anime tells the story of the witch Bayonetta. She awakens after 500 years on the bottom of a lake, with no memory of her previous life. Followed by a little girl who keeps calling her ‘Mummy’ and a mysterious journalist that seems to hold some sort of personal grudge, she embarks on a journey to the isolated European town of Vigrid. On the way to learning more about her past she will need to battle hordes of bloodthirsty Angels.

KITAKUBO Hiroyuki
The impact of technology on society is a continuous theme in film history. But in 1991 director KITAKUBO Hiroyuki put his own spin on it with his anime Roujin Z by linking it to the aging Japanese population and the urge for efficiency in health care. Trouble starts when The Ministry of Health commissions the development of a computerized hospital bed, the Z-001. With the first trial things go wrong when the machine seems to get a will of its own. With simple animation and a strong narrative KITAKUBO exposes problems like bureaucratisation and automation.

Traditional animation meets cutting-edge CGI in this collection of four short anime films. While they differ greatly in style, they are all examples of masterful storytelling. One of them is the Oscar-nominated Possession, a visually mind-blowing tale about a traveler stumbling upon unusual spirits in an abandoned shrine. Another is the wonderful Combustible, drawn in the style of Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) and directed by OTOMO Katsuhiro (Akira), who also oversaw the production of the entire project.

Each year the Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO) invites young creative talents to create several 30 minute films. The goal is to discover the next generation of Japanese film directors. The three shorts presented here show a glimpse of what the future has in store for us, from a parody on fashionistas, a story about outsiders dealing with loss of a loved one, and one about working in a sweatshop.

There’s a first time for everything, even celery. What happens to someone whose heart has been broken forever? And someone who has never experienced this? Minor revelations lead to an unexpected denouement. A bittersweet, sensual story.

Beyond Metabolism Stefanie GAUS,Volker SATTEL
Already in its first images, Beyond Metabolism conveys a fascination for a utopia of architecture that imagines life in future societies in flexible, large structures, expandable at will. We find ourselves in the interior of the International Conference Center in Kyoto, which was built in 1966 by the Japanese architect Otani Sachio. Fragments of documentary archive material recall what may be the most significant event ever to occur at this place, the 1997 World Climate Change Conference. With the help from this building the filmmakers question our idealistic future.

KONDO Junya
KONDO Junya is the former manager of Tokyo’s cult film house Theater-N Shibuya where he probably screened more rock and horror movies than anywhere on this planet, and an avid TEENGENERATE fan. He has said in interviews that Get Action!! is his first and last film.
The legendary Japanese punk rockers of TEENGENERATE only performed for a mere three years, between 1993 and 1995, but their impact on the music scene still lives on to this day. While being ignored by media in their homeland they managed to acquire a huge fanbase. Their unique no-rules approach resonated with kids all over the world and set off a massive rock and roll tidal wave. Almost twenty years after their final concert they tell the story of their short but furious career.

MATSUNAGA Daishi Japan 2013, 90 min, Colour, English subtitles. Director: MATSUNAGA Daishi. Producer: SAKAI Masakazu. Distribution: Pictures Dept.
Documentary that follows several mixed martial arts fighters preparing for what might be the breakthrough tournament of their career. One is a highly ambitious young kid who has trouble accepting defeat, another a professional firefighter that is not allowed to compete for money. But what they all have in common is that, besides several setbacks or disadvantages, they keep on aiming for the stars. Showing the unglamorous side of the world of MMA, far away from the bright lights of Las Vegas, director MATSUNAGA Daishi gives us a glimpse into the mind of a true fighter.

Intimate look into the world of love hotels, the Japanese solution for couples wanting to temporarily escape small living spaces and long work hours. It’s a unique facet of Japanese society that has always been surrounded by stories of gang violence and prostitution. But Phil COX & TODA Hikaru portray it as a safe haven for people from all walks of life. Among the people they follow are a gay couple, a businessman with a love for bondage suits and two elderly lovers that occasionally meet up to dance.

Tokyo-born HANABUSA Aya (1974) became a freelance filmmaker after studying at Jiyu Gakuen University. Her directorial debut, Holy Island, won best documentary at the Sicily Environmental Film Festival. Filmography 2010 Holy Island
The Kitade family has been running their small slaughterhouse and butcher shop for more than seven generations near Osaka, whilst also raising their own cattle. Director HANABUSA Aya observes their daily activities with patience and respect, but also delves deep into the family history of discrimination. In Japan, butchers belong to the Burakumin people, a community treated like outcasts because of their ‘impure’ professions. By participating in the Buraku Liberation League the Kitade’s are hoping to bring an end to these ancient prejudices.

Manga Architecture by Dave van EIJNSBERGEN
At the end of WWII Japan was in ruins. Inspired by traditional shapes and the ideas of the Swiss architect Le CORBUSIER young Japanese architects made plans to develop so-called ‘metabolistic’ city centres. Ouders zijn ook welkom.
Every year we organise a Kids’ Day on Sunday for our smallest visitors. It will be a fun-filled afternoon with lots of games, a photo shoot with specially designed decors and outfits, a workshop, a Japanse storyteller, and even a collection of animated shorts. Parents are welcome too.
