Underground trip andhistorical survey ofArras
I ~ J '.\ I
As regards architecture, the tourist w ill admire
the corbie-stepped statrways used of o ld by residents along the Square to store provisions wine in particular - in cellars enjoying an even temperature of 11 Cl C. Very beautiful chambers are (0 be found there, too , with their vaulting resting either on chalk pillars left in place by the quarriers, or on mon olithi c sandsto ne columns .
Starting from the cellars of the Town Hall, a trip through the underground maze beneath the Market Square is a tourtsuc must for a number of reasons : - first, for the eerie feeling a subterranean progress never fails to procure ;
----
- then, for the architectural, archaeological as well as geol ogical interest always presented by a thousand year-old site . Indeed, the first shafts and galleries were bored as early as the 10th ce ntury and the visitor is left to surmise the number of locals who found shelter there during invasions and wa rs.
•
The last masss occupation was by the British defenders of the city who, from 1914 to 1918, used the place as a clearing hospital. The geological interest is compelling at every step. The sections made through the chalk bank upon which Arras is resting expose the formation of the bedding whose early strata date back 90 million years.
