1 INTRODUCTION This bachelor thesis deals with the translation and analysis of the part of television special by John Cleese How to Irritate People. When I came across How to irriate people I have already been familiar with Monty Python´s Flying Circus series, which I consider very humorous and absorbing. My thesis is divided into two main parts, theoretical and practical. Theoretical part of my thesis comprises biography of the author and description of the special. Theoretical part in the chapter Translation and analysis defines the theories and methods of translation with examples from the practical part. Practical part of my thesis involves the translated text.

2 JOHN CLEESE ON HOW TO IRRITATE PEOPLE

2.1 John Cleese and his contribution to British comedy John Marwood Cleese is an English comedian actor and writer of many popular television comedies, he is best known for being one of the founding and leading members of the comedy group Monty Python. He was born in Somerset in October 1939. Cleese’s family surname had originally been Cheese but his father had it changed to Cleese. While John was studying a law degree at Cambridge University, he joined the prestigious Footlights society, an amateur theatrical club run by students of Cambridge. There he met his future co-workers Tim Brooke-Taylor, his future writing partner Graham Chapman and Eric Idle. In 1961, he wrote an extra material for the Footlights revue I Thought I Saw It Move and cast in footlights revue Double take and A Clump of Plinths. While performing in the USA (Half a Sixpence) he met future Python Terry Gilliam and an American actress Connie Booth, whom he married in 1968. After returning to England he was offered a position as a writer for BBC Radio, where he worked on several popular programmes such as The Dick Emery Show and I´m Sorry, I´ll Read That Again alongside Tim Brooke-Taylor. In 1965, Cleese together with Graham Chapman started working on The Frost Report and met the future Monty Python members Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. They started collaborating and developping their significant styles and soon they were offered a series for ITV, working on At Last the 1948 Show, We Have Ways of Making You Laugh, Doctor in the House and created first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus, an influential sketch show broadcasted on BBC from October 1969 to December 1974. The Pythons brought an innovative approach to television production, pushed boundaries of what was considered acceptable in terms of style and content and changed the way performers entertained audience. The team was responsible for both writing and performing their work, which allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding the established rules of comedy. Pointing out the special surreal and absurd style of humour, the word Pythonesque has entered the English lexikon. ¹ Pyhonesque means seeking the complete abstract form of humor. The main principle of their sketches was the approach of stream-of-consciousness writing style. Their influence on British comedy has been apparent for many years. Cleese became popular thanks to his performances in the sketches like Cheese Shop, Ministry of Silly Walks and Dead Parrot. The succesful Flying Circus series were followed by films Life Of Brian, The Holy Grail and The

Meaning Of Life. Cleese finally left the Flying Circus at the end of Series Three, claiming that he was he had nothing offer the show. Cleese's next project was the sitcom Fawlty Towers, co-written with Connie Booth, regarded as one of the UK's finest sitcoms. When the series ended in 1979 Cleese concentrated on film work, achieving his greatest success in 1988's by A Fish Called Wanda. In recent years besides having appeared in the James Bond films playing gadget master Q's assistant he is involved in documentaries, politics and teaching. 2.2 How to Irritate People How to Irritate People is a television special written by John Cleese that was recorded in 1968 and screened in the United States, as part of a series of specials for the Westinghouse network. It features future Monty Python collaborators Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Connie Booth, a comic actor Tim Brooke-Taylor and Dick Vosburgh who appeared in early Python shows. The special was forgotten until 1990, when it was released on video in the United States and UK. In the special Cleese demonstrates how to make life more unbearable for the others, how to irritate them. The notable feature of this show is Cleese's definition of a word "pepperpot". Later the "pepperpots" also recurred in many Monty Python sketches for example in the sketch Art Gallery, Exploding Penguin or Gangs of Old Ladies as one of very few recurrent characters. The "Car Salesman" sketch, in which Mike Palin as a car salesman refuses to admit that there is anything wrong with his customer's car even if it is evident, is frequently cited as containing the original of Python's famous Dead Parrot sketch, one of the most well-known of any Pythons sketches. The original idea was based on a humorous and true experience of Palin who had tried to get his car repaired. John wrote the "Car Salesman" sketch for How to Irritate People and next year, when looking for material for first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus, Cleese and Chapman decided to rework the old sketch. As was typical in their writing partnership, John wrote the basic sketch and Graham reworked it, changed the faulty car into dead Norwegian Blue parrot, which supplemented it with special surrealistic features. Their humour often involved ordinary people in ordinary situations behaving absurdly for no obvious reason. In the series of Monty Python´s Flying Circus Cleese appeared as a variety of authority figures such as bureaucrats, politics or reporters, many of his characters have a kind of madness, but remain utterly straight-faced while behaving in a silly way. We're also reminded of Pythons elsewhere in the program. The "Quiz Show" sketch, where Brooke-Taylor, as a pepperpot appears as a contestant on a show, was later adapted into another Monty Python sketch, "Spot the Brain Cell".

The Mike's suicidal manager from the "Indian Resaturant" sketch is similar to the waiter in the "Dirty Fork sketch" ("Restaurant sketch" from Monty Python´s Flying Circus, episode 3). The Silly Job Interview sketch starring Cleese as the interviewer and Brooke-Taylor as the interviewee, was later performed, almost unchanged in the first season of Monty Python's Flying Circus series 1, show 5 with a little re-casting. ² For all these reasons, How to Irritate People is one of the very few pre-Python productions reflecting the history and development of the Python phenomenon.

4 RULES AND PRINCIPLES USED IN TRANSLATION As my thesis is considered to be a preliminary research for my masters thesis, the aim of the theoretical part Is to touch individual aspects as a preparation for the deeper investigation. Main integrating challenge of my translation is to follow Levý´s idea, that a translation should function as a piece of artwork. Since between the source language and the target language, English and Czech are many differences, it was necessary to use different language devices to achieve the same effect. Levý points out, that “Překlad by měl být spíše bratrem než synem originálu, neboť oba by měly vycházet ze stejné transcendentální ideje, která je pravým, ale neviditelným otcem díla.“ (Levý 1983: 38) I have endeavoured to take the whole text as one unit and on the basis of main ideas and intentions of the author I solved individual problems. In the course of formulating the translation I found very useful the two of Levý´s contradictory theses: “Překlad může k originálu něco přidávat nebo z něho něco vynechávat. Překlad by neměl nikdy k originálu nic přidávat a nic z něho vynechávat“. (Levý 1983: 33) In many cases it was not possible to preserve invaried form of the source text, although I intented to create as authentic translation as possible, and threfore it was sometimes unavoidable to add or omit a piece of information. Recent approach of the theory is focused more on the process of translation than on its final product. This approach devotes attention to the characteristic features of the source text, its cultural and historical particularities, genre, addressee, its function and the choice of which of those must be observed. As well as the translator, reader is linked with the cultural and historical background, the nation and traditions. First of all, this contemporary approach analyses cultural background of the text, historical and local setting, allusions, the relationship of the author and the topic and the audience, types of audience and type of the text. Then, focuses on the decision of detail. As Levý remarks “Úplnější či méně úplné zachování národních zvláštností díla si překladatel může dovolit podle toho, jakou informovanost o cizí kultuře může u svého čtenáře předpokládat, zároveň však má možnost si čtenáře vychovávat k lepšímu pochopení cizí literatury“. (Levý 1983: 99) I have decided to preserve great deal of specific features of the original text such as personal names, names of cities and books, because from my point of view, the reader is 38

prepared to accept dissimilaries of cultures and requires that the translation is set in the original context. One of the contemporary theories is the Thinking Translation theory by Sándor Hervey and Ian Higgins. The theory explores cultural transposition, which is a way of replacing specific features of the source text and its cultural background to the target language and culture. (Knittlová 2003: 22) Degrees of cultural transposition can be described as: 1. Exoticism is “the lowest degree of cultural transposition of a source text feature, whereby that feature (having its roots exclusively in the source language and source culture) is taken over verbatim into the target text, that is, the transposed term is recognizably and deliberately foreign element in the target text“. (Knittlová 2003: 201) In my translation, I have decided to use exoticisms as I consider the reader capable of understanding of all the items and they have special function in the source text, which I attempeted to sustain. 2. Cultural transplantation is the highest degree of cultural transposition. It involves “the replacement of source-cultural details mentioned in the source text with cultural details drawn from the target culture in the target text, that is, cultural transplantation deletes from the text items specific to the source culture, replacing them with items specific to the target culture“. (Knittlová 2003: 200) I have applied this method to the translation of the name Jullie Andrews. 3. Cultural borrowing is “the process of taking over a source language expression verbatim from the source text into the target text (and, ultimately, into the target language as a whole). The borrowed term may remain unaltered in form or may undergo minor alteration of transliteration“. (Knittlová 2003: 200) This method was used for example in the case of personal names. 4. Calque is “a form of cultural transposition whereby a target text expression is modelled on the grammatical structure of the corresponding source text expression“. (Knittlová 2003: 199) In agreement with this rule, the word “pepperpot“ was translated as “pepřenka“. 5. Communicative translation is “a style of free translation involving the substitution for source text expressions of their contextually/situationally appropriate cultural equivalents in the target language, that is, the target text uses situationally apt target culture equivalents in preference to literal translation“. (Knittlová 2003: 199) This approach is usually used for translating collocations and idioms. 39

5 THE ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION 5.1 Morphological aspect 5.1.1 Interjections Interjections are words or phrases with no particular grammatical relation to any constituent of sentence. Their meaning can be inexplicit, dependent upon intonation or context that gives them expressiveness. Generally, interjections are expressions of emotions. In English are often used as a first item of an utterance but can also stand separately in the meaning of an individual sentence. Interjections can be divided into primary and secondary interjections. Primary interjection is a word that cannot be used in any other sense than an interjection. Such interjections are ah, oh, ugh, ssh, et al. Secondary interjections are words that are derived from nouns, verbs, pronouns, e.g. Damn! Oh, God! Use of interjections in English is very frequent and there is no full correspondence between their use in English and Czech. Therefore, different language devices are used for translation and their choice often depends on a subjective attitude of the translator. In some of the examples below, matching interjections from Czech are used but generally they are left out or replaced with different language devices or structures.

Oh, damn! You are angry again. Sakryš, teď jsi zase naštvaná!

Oh, the gear leaver is loose, isn’t it? That’s where your trouble is! Ahá, řadicí páka je uvolněná, že jo? To je ten váš problém!

Right, hand brake off! Ták, ruční brzdu vypnout!

In the translation I dealt with some rarely used intrjections such as ha, ai, you hoo, well I never or tsk. Ha expresses amusement or surprise, ai is an expression of pity, pain or anguish. An interjection yoo hoo is used as a way of calling to someone to get their attention. In my translation there is used Czech analogical interjection Uú. Well, I never is an idiomatic interjection used for exclamation of great surprise or astonishment and tsk is an old-fashioned interjection, used for an exclamation of disapproval. Example of translation: 40

Oh, Ah! Well, I never! Tsk, tsk, tsk! Ó, no teda! Ts, ts, ts!

5.2 Syntactic aspect 5.2.1 Question tags Specific form of interrogative sentence is a declarative sentence with question tag. Question tag is a phrase added to the main part of the sentence, inviting the listener to comment on particular. Tag question consists of repetition of subject from the declarative sentence and its verb. Generally, with the affirmative sentence negative question tag is used, and with negative sentences we use affirmative question tags. Question tags are more common in spoken usage than in formal written usage. They can indicate politeness, emphasis, or irony. In Czech equivalent sentences are nonverbal phrases such as že, že ano, viď, že ne. When standing individually their counterparts can be sentences e.g. opravdu?, skutečně?, ano? Yeah, you don’t wanna watch this, do you Malcolm? Na to se přece nechceš dívat, že ne, Malcolme?

Mrs Harris keeping well, is she? Paní Harrisová se má dobře, že ano?

Lovely weather, isn’t it? Krásné počasí, viďte?

5.3. Lexical aspect 5.3.1 Pragmatic differences and explicatory approach “Vysvětlení je namístě, uniká-li našemu čtenáři něco, co pro původního čtenáře bylo obsaženo v díle“. (Levý 1983: 38) When the proper equivalent does not exist and the meaning is not clear and understable for the reader on account of reasons of cultural background, an explanation and additional information is needed. Examples where an explanation is necessary are demonstrated below. First is the title of television series based on the book A Tale of Two Cities by Charles

Dickens and second is a traditional English dish lamb chops, which is prepared with mint.

It’s the last episode of A Tale of Two Cities. Je to poslední díl Příběhu dvou měst podle Charlese Dickense.

Do you want lamb chops, Pamela? Dáš si jehněčí kotletky na mátě, Pamelko?

5.3.1 Substitution by analogy Substitution by analogy is a translation technique widely used for translating units of measurement. Measures are converted with the objective to correspond to the original number but at the same time to preserve the nature of the text. And the best way to deal with this is to take an ordinary fork of one of the tables and place the prongs of the fork about three eights of an inch inside the manager’s eyeball.

Nejlepší způsob, jak se s tím vypořádat, je vzít obyčejnou vidličku z jednoho ze stolů a umístit její hroty tak centimetr hluboko do oční bulvy toho manažera.

The bank manager himself irritates people by writing to them immediately they owe the bank fourpence. Sám bankéř štve lidi tím, že jim píše pokaždé, když dluží bance byť jen dvacku.

5.3.2 Proper nouns Proper nouns are nouns that represent unique entities. They function as denominations of events, names of people, places, traditions and products which differ from country to country, forming its specific cultural background.

5.3.2.1 Personal names Translators sometimes replace the English surnames of characters by Czech substituents in order to increase the comic effect of these names. As in case of this translation there was no special function of personal names, the original form of names and surnames was preserved

with minor phonological or morphological changes such as adding suffix –ová in female surnames. Examples of translation of first names and surnames: Lizzy and Phil (Lizzy a Fil), Mr Harris (pan Harris), Mrs Harris (paní Harrisová), Mrs Morris (paní Morrisová). An exception is name of Julie Andrews, which is familiar to British readers but for most Czech readers it is just an unknown name. The aim of the source text is to demonstrate how useless would be to set fire to a person who represents cultural icon, actress staging in the films and musicals such as Mary Poppins, Shrek and Cinderella. To make this reference understandable for Czech readers I have used the technique cultural transplantation. As an equivalent I chose Czech actress representing similar type of woman, Libuše Šafránková.

It’s like for example going to a football game and cheering for the team that isn’t playing or wearing fancy dress at a funeral or setting fire to Jullie Andrews. Stejně jako kupříkladu jít na fotbalový zápas a fandit týmu, který zrovna nehraje nebo vzít si maškarní kostým na pohřeb nebo podpálit dům Libušce Šafránkové.

5.3.4 Expressions from other languages The use of a foreign language in the text can appear in several variations. It can indicate the atmosphere, it is often used in terms of address, greetings or social phrases. The translation is always determined by their function in the text. Second determinant is the cultural background. The English language has been shaped by a number of other languages over the centuries, from which Latin, German and French were the most important while the two most significant languages that influenced Czech language were Latin and German. As the main aim of this translation is to make the text understandable for the Czech readers, I chose various methods of translation. In the case of greetings, I have chosen cultural transposition and foreign language expressions remained untranslated. In the case of Latin expression bona fide I have decided to use the Czech equivalent.

Tady je jedna flotila, která bezelstně štve návštěvníka kina. 5.3.5 Calque The word “pepperpots“ entered culture as neologism specifically used by Monty Pythons. It appeared in later Monty Python´s Flying Circus series. Czech translator Petr Palouš, Monty Pythons´ court translator, introduced the word to the Czech readers as a term “pepřenky“, which was formed by translation technique called calque. Calque is a word or phrase borrowed from another language by literal, "word-for-word" translation. Czech readers became aware of the meaning and for that reason the translation should be left unchanged. Example: A pepperpot’s life’s ambition is to be in the audience of a quiz show. She has to be found in shopping areas, blocking the pavement, tormenting babies, spreading rumours and spending a fortune on bargains. Životním cílem pepřenek je dostat se do obecenstva televizních kvízů. Můžete se s nimi setkat v nákupních centrech, jak překážejí na chodnících, trápí děti, šíří drby, utrácí jmění za mimořádně výhodné nabídky.

5.3.6 Idioms and collocations An idiom is a number of words which, when taken together, can have different meaning from the individual meanings of each word. They are part of everyday usage of language. “Tlak překladatelské tradice se nejsilněji uplatňuje a je do značné míry závazný v těch případech, kde překladatelké řešení dřívějších generací se již se stalo součástí českého kulturního povědomí, jako např. u okřídlených rčení a pojmů, u knižních celků“. (Levý 1983: 109) According to Levý, when the meaning does not depend on a single word but on whole phrase, it is important to translate the meaning of the whole phrase and not the individual words, since their literal meaning would not provide accurate comprehension. Hence, phrases, idioms and sayings are translated as one lexical item. Authors Hervey and Higgins use term communicative translation. Examples of are given below.

5.4 Stylistic aspect 5.4.1 Expressiveness Expressive words have an emotive charge, which can be positive or negative. Three types of expressiveness can be distinguished: 1. Inherent exists as a natural part of the meaning 2. Adherent is based on metaphoric use of notional words 3. Contextual means the use of notional words in a context that gives them expressiveness. (Peprník 2001:105) When compared English and Czech from the point of view of the occurence of expressive devices, Czech seems to be richer. Expressiveness in English is uttered mainly by lexical terms that carry the expressive meaning. Therefore, in Czech, these devices must sometimes be compensated by different language devices. In English, inherent expressiveness is represented by interjections and terms of address. They give utterances expressiveness and subjectivity.

5.4.1.1 Terms of address Some of the most polite and formal terms of address are Your Majesty, Your Royal Highness indicating social distance and respect. In this context, exagerrated politeness is remarked ironically. As there are no exact equivalents existing in Czech context, I used translation technique analogy to preserve the function in the target text.

Oh, My Lord you are visiting a pigsty. Ó, pane, je to tu jak v prasečím chlívku.

Ooh, there is no napkin for Her Highness! Ó ne, není tu ubrousek pro Její Výsost!

Terms of address can be familiar and complimentary, such as dear, love, sweetheart. They express the positive relation to the adressee. To express familiarity in Czech, most frequently are used diminutives. Have you seen my blue cardigan, dear? Neviděl jsi můj modrý svetřík, drahoušku?

Terms of address can also show pejorative relationship to the adressee. Oh, you bitch! No ty kurvo! 5.4.1.2 Pejoratives Pejorative words and phrases express criticism or a bad opinion of someone or something. Their use and meaning in the language changes depending upon time and society. Poured down, bloody weather. Lít bude, zpropadený počasí.

It’s a load of rubbish, if you ask me… Podle mě je to snůška blbostí. Oh shut up! Drž už hubu!

5.4.1.3 Colloquiality In this thesis, apart from neutral, formal and informal vocabulary, there is used colloquial language within the speech of selected characters such as "pepperpots" with an objective to make their language corresponding to their social background, behaviour and their language usage. They use many emotionally evaluative words, interjections and expressive figures in order to term reality. More formal speech was chosen for example for John Cleese as a guide through the programme. Colloquiality in Czech can be expressed in several ways. Colloquiality can be expressed morphologically by means of suffixes –ej, -ý with adjectives and -ou for verbs. Examples: Jakej Němec? Hitler neměl velkej nos. To je skvělý! Nevím, proč to sledujou. Je to děsný. It can be expressed also phonologically, by deformation of literary language. Example: Já nic neřek. And lexically by using expressive words, colloquial expressions and phrases. Examples: "Hiya, I’ve come to improve the telephone service." „Zdravíčko, přišel sem zlepšit telefonní služby.“

Well, er I mustn’t stand here chatting. I’ve got to be going. It’s a getting late. No já vlastně, nemůžu se tu vykecávat. Musím jít, už se připozdívá.

Yes, well I thought I just pop down to the pub. Vlastně jsem si říkal že jen skočím do hospody.

6 CONCLUSION When I found that there is no proper Czech translation of screenplay or subtitles of How to Irritate People it was a challenge to try to translate it. Although it was very difficult and time-consuming as I was not able to find and download neither subtitles in English, nor an English screenplay and I was forced to transcribe the spoken language into the written form, I suppose it was worth doing it. I endeavoured to loose in the translation minimum of its great humour with the aim to introduce it to Czech readers. My work on this thesis provided me with new knowledge of English vocabulary, new idioms and collocations, differencies between English and Czech, and first of all, tought me very much about difficulties of pronunciation. I have found it very interesting from the linguistic point of view as well as from the point of new information aquisition, mainly about British cultural background. Furthermore, I would like to use this material as a preliminary research for my master thesis and improve its parts.

В данной работе John Cleese on How to Irritate People на основе сделанного перевода и анализа одной комедии из британского телевизионного цикла установляется проблемы, с которыми столкнулись в ходе перевода. Проблематика перевода рассматривается с нескольких лингвистических точек зрения. Приводятся методы перевода. Отмечается биография John Cleese и его вклад в британское телевизионное творчество. Работа состоит из двух главных частей – практической и теоретической.
