Dropping groep 1. De rit duurde nu wel erg lang. Mijn besef van tijd en plaats was helemaal weg. Aan de blikken op de gezichten van mijn groepsgenoten te zien hadden zij hetzelfde. Was dit het eenheidsgevoel waar ze het voor het kamp over hadden? Het enige wat ik kon doen was mijn angst proberen te onderdrukken en mij te concentreren op het feit dat alles wel goed zou komen. Gelukkig was Allard er nog. Zolang hij er was had ik geen reden om bang te zijn. Hij zou wel voor ons zorgen. De wandeling op zichzelf zou toch maar drie kwartier duren dus wat kon er nou daadwerkelijk gebeuren? De auto stopte en Henning schreeuwde : “Eruit!”. Iedereen luisterde gedwee en stapte uit het busje. “Hier, kompas, kaart en een GPS. Succes!” zei Henning met een valse grijns van leedvermaak op zijn gelaat terwijl hij de attributen overhandigde aan Allard. Hij stapte al lachend weer terug in het busje en reed als een speer weg. Daar stonden we dan, in the middle of nowhere met alleen elkaar om op terug te vallen. Allard schraapte zijn keel en zei: “Hier gaan we dan, volg mij maar”. Ik had nog steeds vertrouwen in hem. Wist ik toen maar waar ik aan begonnen was. Geen van ons had ooit de afgrijselijke tocht die ons te wachten stond kunnen overzien. We waren al verloren alleen beseften we dat toen nog niet. De eerste stappen waren gezet en we begonnen aan de tocht die ons voor het leven zou tekenen. We waren met zijn achten: Allard; De sociotherapeut en gids, Anna; kletskous van de groep, Sjaan; diegene die misschien wel het meest bang was van ons allemaal, Babette; rouwdouwer, Ellen; de stille kracht, Frederique; de criticus, Pauline: de sfeermaker en ik. Het was koud en het begon te miezeren. We waren ondertussen toch al een tijdje bezig en kwamen uit bij een splitsing. Aan de ene kant vormde zich een pad die om het bos heen ging en de andere optie ging linea recta het bos in. We stonden voor een lastige keuze. Als we het pad langs het bos zouden nemen waren we echt uren onderweg maar wisten we wel dat we waarschijnlijk niet zouden verdwalen. Gezien het feit dat het al donker begon te worden zouden we via deze weg wel heel laat bij het kampement terug zijn. De andere kant was risicovol maar wel een stuk sneller. Gemakzuchtig als we waren kozen we voor het pad het bos in, niet wetende dat die keuze misschien wel de grootste misstap was die we konden maken. De sfeer was grimmig terwijl we door het donkere woud liepen. De angst en onzekerheid was voelbaar en het enige wat er we hoorden waren de richtlijnen die Allard ons gaf. “Hierheen jongens!” en “Is iedereen er nog?”. Zijn stem was het enige vertrouwde in dit bos vol wanhoop. Hoe dieper we het zompige bos inliepen hoe steiler we afdaalden. We liepen ongeveer een uur in het bos zonder ook maar iets wat leek op een pad te zien. “Wat zegt de GPS?” vroeg ik aan Allard. “Ik zal even kijken” antwoordde hij. Vol spanning wachtte ik op geruststellende woorden. In plaats daarvan zei hij met een lichte trilling in zijn stem: “Niks, hij heeft geen bereik”. In mijn ooghoek zag ik een aantal groepsgenoten schrikken en elkaar aankijken op zoek naar antwoorden die er niet waren. “En nu? We kunnen niet meer terug want de heuvel is veel te steil!”. Allard dacht na en zei uiteindelijk: “We moeten wel, anders komen we helemaal nergens uit”. Om mij heen hoorde ik mensen zuchten. “Dit hadden we nooit moeten doen!” zei Frederique met overslaande stem. “Kom op jongens, niet zeuren” zei Babette betrekkelijk rustig gezien de benarde situatie. We gingen al snikkend weer terug omhoog terwijl het heel mistig begon te worden. Al vrij snel kwamen we erachter dat het zwaarder was dan we dachten maar een keuze hadden we niet. Na een kwartier naar boven klauteren vroeg Allard weer: “Is iedereen er?”. “1,2,3,4,5,6,7 waar is Anna?”. Het was al zeker tien minuten lang erg stil en terwijl we wild om ons heen keken viel bij ons allemaal het kwartje. Anna was weg. Een golf van paniek ging door de groep. We begonnen wild te haar naam te roepen. “Anna! Waar ben je?”. “Jongens kalm! Rustig blijven!” schreeuwde Allard zonder gehoor te krijgen. Ze had geen zaklamp bij zich en op de steile helling waar we waren was het onmogelijk om te overleven zonder. Naast mij zag ik Sjaan luid huilend naar de grond zakken terwijl ze in het Engels aan bidden was. Frederique probeerde haar tevergeefs te troosten. Ik keek Linda aan in de hoop dat zij misschien de sfeer wat kon opkrikken om ons weer een sprankje hoop te geven. Maar aan de blik in haar ogen zag ik dezelfde hopeloosheid die ik zelf voelde. Ze wendde mijn blik af en keek verloren naar de met natte bladeren bedekte grond. “We moeten haar halen” zei de tot nu toe stille Ellen met vastberadenheid in haar stem. “Nee jongens, daarmee brengen we onszelf
teveel in gevaar. We kunnen niets anders doen dan doorgaan. We moeten als groep bij elkaar blijven” zei Allard. “Doe normaal man! We kunnen haar toch niet aan haar lot overlaten!” schreeuwde Frederique terwijl ze haar armen stevig om de nog altijd naar de heer gekeerde Sjaan heensloeg in de hoop om nog ergens vastigheid vinden. “Sorry jongens, maar ik laat het niet toe.”. Gelukkig was Allard er nog, ik vertrouwde hem nog steeds. Ik rechtvaardigde de verdwijning van Anna door tegen mezelf te zeggen dat ze maar een zaklamp mee had moeten nemen. Het was niet ons schuld. Maar mijn gevoel werkte niet mee. Op het moment dat we weer begonnen te klimmen schreeuwde Ellen ineens : “Ik kom Anna!” en rende met tranen in haar ogen naar beneden. Hysterisch jankend en krijsend stootte ze met haar gaslamp tegen een boom en gleed hierdoor uit vol in de scherven van haar lamp. Het schouwspel deed me denken aan het crisiscentrum waar ik ook van dichtbij zelfbeschadiging had aanschouwd. Ze probeerde paniekerig op te staan maar dat ging zeer moeizaam vanwege de gladde ondergrond en ze viel meerdere keren om in de glasscherven. Uiteindelijk slaagde de inmiddels bebloede groepsgenote erin om op te staan en verder te rennen richting de afgrond. “Ellen! Nee! Niet doen!” schreeuwde Allard, maar het was al te laat. Ze verdween in de duisternis en het enige wat we toen nog van Ellen vernamen was een luide gil die verstomde in de duisternis. Ze was ook gevallen. We waren nog maar met zes intens bange zieltjes. “Godverdomme” hoorde ik Allard naast me fluisteren. “Nu blijven we verdomme allemaal bij elkaar!” zei hij met een daadkrachtige stem. “Geef mij Sjaan maar” zei Babette op een even zo kordate toon. Ze gooide de biddende Bulgaarse over haar schouder en op die voet gingen we verder naar boven. Terwijl we bibberend naar boven liepen hoorde ik dat Frederique naar zichzelf toe steeds dezelfde geruststellende woorden bleef herhalen. “Het komt allemaal goed.”. Dat hield ik mezelf ook voor. We bungelden op het randje van hel als gedetineerden in het niemandsland dat ver van god zijn koninkrijk lag. Het enige wat ons op de been hield was de warme herinnering van de buitenwereld. Helaas vervloog deze herinnering met de gure wind die langs ons open wonden raasden zoals ik me altijd voorstelde hoe de adem van de duivel zou aanvoelen, koud en pijnlijk. Diezelfde adem was eveneens voelbaar en zichtbaar in de vorm van de mist die nu wel heel dicht was geworden. Niemand zag nog een hand voor ogen maar we weigerden om op het voorstel van Allard in te gaan om handen vast te houden. Koppig als we waren wilden we het allemaal zelf doen en geen hulp ontvangen. We strompelden urenlang zonder enige richtlijn door het mistige woud verslagen door emoties terwijl Allard probeerde te bellen. Dit uiteraard zonder enig resultaat omdat er geen signaal was door de bomen die als een gevangenismuur over ons heen torende. Net toen ik dacht dat we eindeloos rondjes liepen kwamen we uit op een open plek. Maar gezien het late uur en de en de donkerheid die daarmee gepaard ging wisten we niet of de open plek water of solide grond was. “Ik ga wel even kijken” zei Allard met een sprankje hoop in zijn stem “wacht hier”. We wachtten met smart terwijl we Allard rustig en bedreven zagen afdalen richting de open plek. Hij gooide een steen om te kijken of die zou verdwijnen in een vermoedelijke plas water waarmee ons hoop die aan een zijden draadje hing misschien ten gronde gestort zou kunnen worden. Plof! “We kunnen!”. Het was alsof die woorden mij bevrijdden uit een galg die steeds strakker om mijn nek kwam te zitten. Terwijl ik rustig maar vol met enthousiasme me een weg naar beneden baande net als de anderen proefde ik een zoute smaak. Het was een vreugde traan die zich sierlijk langs mijn wang een weg naar mijn mond had gebaand. De rest was ook zichtbaar opgelucht en Pauline begon dan ook spontaan opbeurende liederen te zingen die al snel werden opgepikt door de groep. Zelfs Sjaan stopte met bidden en ging over tot het bedanken dat haar gebeden werden verhoord. Allard stond intussen al op de open plek met een glimlach van oor tot oor en zijn armen gespreid zoals je een engel voorstelt bij de hemelpoort. “Pas wel op met afdalen jongens, er zijn hier scherpe rotsen dus jullie moeten wel voorzichtig zijn.” zei hij met een innemende grimas op zijn kinderlijk blij ogende gelaat. Ik vertrouwde hem nu meer dan ooit tevoren. De positieve stemming sloeg over in een ietwat bedenkelijke sfeer toen we bij de rotswand aankwamen die steiler en gevaarlijker was dan dat hij op de eerste blik oogde. In ons enthousiasme hadden we geen rekening gehouden met het feit dat de rotswand ook een opzienbarend obstakel vormde in ons weg naar solide rechte grond. “Ah joh, dat stelt niks voor” zei Babette met een nonchalance in haar stem. Niet lang daarna gooide ze Sjaan richting de nog altijd grijnzende sociotherapeut die tijdens het opvangen languit op zijn rug viel. “Gaat het Sjaan?” zei hij terwijl hij haar innig in haar armen sloot om voor zichzelf het gevoel te geven dat ze veilig was. “Ja hoor”
fluisterde ze zachtjes zonder ook maar enige emotie in haar stem. Voordat Allard kon opstaan om Babette op te vangen sprong ze al naar beneden. “Hoppakee! Zo doe je dat!” zei ze met licht verheven zelfverzekerde stem terwijl ze sprong. Sierlijk was het niet, maar ze kwam heel stevig op haar voeten terecht en had de toon gezet voor de rest van de groep. Ik volgde haar voorbeeld dan ook op en sprong zonder enige angst en kwam na een Indiana Jones waardige koprol ook weer op mijn voeten te staan. Gelukkig ik was er, nu alleen Frederique en Pauline nog. “Kom maar jongens! Het is prima te doen”. Ze waren beiden vrij angstig en begonnen te overleggen wie er dan maar eerst moest van hun tweeën. Naast mij hoorde ik Bar zuchten en klagen. “Altijd hetzelfde met die wijven. Gewoon doen!” zei ze daarna met een harde en snijdende ondertoon. De twee bibberende cliëntjes voelde dat er nu naast hun eigen angst ook nog eens groepsdruk op kwam te staan. Hetgeen wat door het team altijd zo werd gestimuleerd kwam nu goed van pas. Frederique deed haar ogen dicht en sprong, maar niet ver genoeg. Een krakend geluid dat door merg en been verspreidde zich door het grote, (hopelijk) verder lege bos. Ze hing met een rots gespietst door haar lichaam. Haar ogen puilde uit en keken me met een verloren blik recht aan en voor even voelde ik mij net zo dood als dat de blonde nieuweling daadwerkelijk was. Alles werd ineens zo zwart als mijn longen voor mijn ogen. Ik begon te bibberen en draaien terwijl de duisternis mij omarmde en ik was weg. Plots belandde ik in een kleurrijke wereld. Het leek op hetzelfde bos maar dan zonnig en dik begroeit. Ik keek naar mijn handen en zag dat ik een geweer in mijn handen had. Zonder me af te vragen waar deze voor diende begon ik te lopen door het groene bos en ik voelde me compleet zen. Alles in deze wereld bewoog heel langzaam en gedwee. Tot mijn verbazing zag ik een hertje vreedzaam grazen midden op een open plek tussen de bebossing. Op dat moment kreeg ik de ingeving wat te doen met het vuurwapen die ik bij me droeg. Het hertje moest gevangen worden en dat was mijn taak. Geconcentreerd richtte ik mijn geweer op het nietsvermoedende dier en legde mijn vinger op de trekker. Net toen ik de trekker wilde overhalen sprong het beest sierlijk een paar meter weg. Opnieuw richtte ik mijn geweer op het reeds verplaatste wezen maar die sprong wederom weg. Dit scenario herhaalde zich een stuk of tien keer en ik begon mijn geduld te verliezen. Frustratie nam de overhand en ik begon wild om me heen te schieten terwijl het hertje uit zicht verdween. Als donderslag bij heldere hemel kwam ik bij en nam waar dat iedereen, op Sjaan na, dicht bij de rotswand stond om op Linda in te praten. Ze gaf geen kik of ook maar enig teken dat de bemoedigende woorden bij haar aankwamen. Ze was versteend van angst. Ik wreef twee maal in mijn ogen en wendde mijn blik links van mij waar ik Sjaan in foetus houding zag liggen terwijl ze haar duim in haar mond had en spastisch heen en weer aan het wiegen was. Met de situatie wist ik mij geen raad, alles stond even voor me uit. Het enige wat ik deed was observeren en het afgrijselijke tafereel wat zich zojuist voor mijn ogen had voltrokken te bevatten. Frederique hing nog steeds in de rotsen als een herinnering aan ons verloren situatie. Ik begon manisch te gillen terwijl de anderen nog steeds probeerden Pauline naar beneden te praten (niet figuurlijk uiteraard). Op een gegeven moment zag ik ondanks mijn beperkte zicht en motoriek nog wel dat Allard op de rug van Babette klom om op die manier een menselijke ladder te vormen om de gedesillusioneerde Linda naar beneden te helpen. Allard pakte haar stevig doch subtiel vast alsof het een pasgeboren kind was dat voor het eerst de warmte van haar vader mocht ontvangen. Het was prachtig om te zien met hoeveel zorg, toewijding en precisie ze Linda heelhuids naar het zachte en drassige gras brachten. Om het ontroerende schouwspel af te maken legde Allard haar in een soepele beweging voorzichtig neer alsof ze van fijngemaakt porselein was. Daarna stapte hij driftig naar mij toe en gaf me een klap in mijn gezicht met zijn vlakke hand. “Kom op Ton, wakker worden! We hebben je nodig! We moeten bij elkaar blijven!”. Meteen was ik bij zinnen door de klap die aankwam als de openbaring van een baby die geboren wordt en voor het eerst het licht aanschouwt. Ik stond nog enigszins perplex en keek hoe Allard op dezelfde agressieve wijze Sjaan bij zinnen probeerde te brengen. “Dit gaat niet werken jongens.” zei Babette en gooide de gechoqueerde foetus zoals vanouds over haar schouder. Het leek wel een accessoire van de altijd goed geklede Babette te zijn geworden. Zo zag ze het zelf klaarblijkelijk ook want ze verving de duim die Sjaan in haar mond had met haar zaklamp zodat ze haar andere hand vrij had. In de tussentijd was Linda rechtop gaan zitten en begon te praten wat meer leek op het gebrabbel van iemand met alzheimer. Desalniettemin was ik blij dat ze wat meer bij zinnen was gekomen.
Allard ging tegenover haar zitten en begon op haar in te praten als een vader die zijn kind probeert te leren spreken. Haar eerste woorden waren: “Je hoeft niet tegen me te praten alsof ik achterlijk ben hoor!”. Ze was weer helemaal terug. “Help me even overeind.” zei ze vervolgens op een karakteristieke manier. Ik gaf haar mijn hand en ze greep hem vol overtuiging en hees zichzelf op. Ze wierp een blik op Frederique en kwam tot het pijnlijke besef dat het gedaan was. Ze pakte mijn hand weer en we begonnen spontaan synchroon kumbaya te zingen. Allard en Babette sloten aan en deden vol overtuiging mee. Het was niet alleen voor Frederique, Ellen en Anna. Maar ook om onszelf hoop in te boezemen. We waren er nog niet maar we gingen er komen, dat moesten en zouden we onszelf voorhouden. Voor even waren we weer terug thuis, ver van het ongure bos dat ons met de seconde meer leek in te sluiten. Ik kom mama, ik kom, dacht ik bij mezelf. Na een half uur pakten we ons spulletjes en Sjaan om zo ons dodenmars door de ontbering voort te zetten. De vaste grond hield tot niemand zijn verbazing snel weer op en we moesten ons tocht weer voortzetten op de steile heuvels die zo glibberig en ongrijpbaar waren als ons vertrouwen in een goed einde. Deze gedachtegang werd al snel bevestigd toen ik mijn voet verkeerd neerzette. Snel probeerde ik de dichtstbijzijnde boom vast te pakken, dit lukte, maar hij brak. Allard aarzelde geen seconde en pakte me bij mijn jas vast. Ik bungelde op het randje van een afgrond zonder enige houvast. Alleen de hand van Allard behoedde mij van een zekere dood. “Laat me maar los” zei ik beseffende dat ik de groep nu alleen maar op hield. “Nee! Dat doen we niet!” zei Allard terwijl de rest van de groep dit beaamde. “Je moet leren om hulp van anderen te ervaren!”. Ik rolde met mijn ogen maar besefte dat er misschien wel een kern van waarheid in zat. Op dat moment trok Allard mij omhoog en zei: “Ik dacht dat PB toch meer impact had gehad”. “Volgens mij heb ik mijn lesje nu wel geleerd” zei ik terwijl mijn hart nog in mijn keel bontste. “He dramaqueens! We moeten verder!” zei Babette met een zichtbaar vermoeide uitdrukking op haar gezicht. We pinkten beiden een traantje weg maar stemden in. Mijn vertrouwen was nog steeds niet geschaad. We liepen al weer een tijd alsof er niets gebeurt was zoals we ons tocht begonnen. Mijn gedachtes dwaalde af naar de andere groep. Hoe zou het met hun gaan? Ik mistte ze ineens intens en begon terug te denken aan de mooie momenten die ik met hun had gehad. Het gooien met brownies, pannenkoeken eten, naar parkpop gaan en met zijn allen tekenen tot in de late uurtjes. Wat zou ik ze graag in mijn armen sluiten hoor ik mezelf nog denken. Ik werd heel erg sentimenteel maar ook hoopvol. Daadkrachtig maakte ik het besluit dat ik ze allemaal weer in mijn armen zou gaan sluiten. Evenals iedereen die thuis op me wachtten. Nooit zou ik ze ooit nog voor lief nemen, als ik ze maar terug zou zien. Ik merkte dat ik mijn hele jas aan het bevochtigen was met tranen, snot en kwijl. Misschien kon ik beter niet aan zulke prachtige momenten terugdenken maar dichter bij de realiteit gaan staan. Het begon de goede richting in te gaan totdat de man waar we allen op leunden ineens wel heel zwaar begon te ademen. “Gaat het?” vroeg Pauline zichtbaar ongerust. We wisten allemaal dat de al licht kalende socio reeds op leeftijd was. “Ja, ja, ik deed dit vroeger wel vaker joh. Niks aan het handje”. Het klonk niet overtuigend en terwijl die het met overslaande stem zei besefte hij het zelf ook, want hij zakte luid hijgend naar de grond en schudde zijn hoofd. “Shit! Allard wat doe je?” vroeg ik paniekerig. Hij antwoordde slechts in gebrabbel en begon licht te trillen. “Allard! Wat doe je?” vroeg ik nog een keer maar ditmaal schreeuwend. Hij reageerde niet meer en ging languit liggen op de kletsnatte bladeren. Hij begon steeds heviger te trillen en het enige verstaanbare dat uit zijn mond kwam waren loze kreten als: “ Wat zit daar achter?” en “Ruimte innemen”. Paniekerig keek ik om me heen hopende dat mijn groepsgenoten zich raad wisten met de situatie. Zij deden echter hetzelfde en we keken allemaal naar Allard alsof we hem hiermee konden helpen. Door zijn hysterische getril gleed hij ineens als een gek naar beneden. “Nee!” krijste Babette terwijl ze Sjaan nog steeds op haar rug had. Ze pakte hem bij zijn oorlel maar verloor hierbij ook haar evenwicht. Hierdoor viel Sjaan als een doodgeknuppeld zeehondje van haar rug af de afgrond in. Linda begon naar ze toe te rennen maar ik besefte dat ze verloren waren en sprong naar haar met een snoekduik en hield haar tegen. Terwijl we versteend in elkaars armen lagen zagen we ze de afgrond in glijden. “Vaarwel wrede wereld!” schreeuwde Bar het bos nog na. Ze waren voor altijd weg, samen met ons kompas, kaart, GPS en het laatste stukje hoop dat we nog hadden. We hebben nog uren snikkend en treurend in elkaars armen gelegen. Terwijl we daar verloren lagen op de helling van nagenoeg 90 graden voelde ik een snerpende pijn in mijn linkerzij. Toen ik mijn shirt omhoog deed om te kijken zag ik dat ik een behoorlijke open wond had waar een tak in
stak. Ik schrok op en keek naar Linda, ze zag meteen wat er aan de hand was en vertelde me dat ik rustig moest blijven. Ze gaf me haar sjaal met de instructie om hem te klemmen tussen mijn tanden. Gedwee volgde ik haar raad op met angst voor wat komen ging. Ze sloot haar ogen en ademde een aantal keer diep in en uit. Ze deed haar ogen open en sloot haar handen stevig om de tak die nog steeds in mijn lichaam stak als een speer. Met een luide kreet rukte ze in een keer de tak uit mijn gehavende torso. Een pijnscheut zoals ik die nog nooit had gevoeld ging door mij heen. Zo hard als ik kon beet ik de sjaal terwijl ik er keihard in krijste van de afgrijselijke fysieke pijn. Verslagen liet ik mij vallen in de bladeren na hijgend en kreunend van hetgeen dat zich net had voltrokken. Vervolgens pakte Linda uit haar tas een naaisetje en wreef over mijn hoofd. Door de pijn kwam de vraag waarom ze dit bij zich had niet in mij op. “Sorry Ton, dit moet echt even gebeuren”. Ze begon met de naald en draad mijn wond dicht te naaien terwijl ik op de sjaal beet alsof ik mijn pijn erop kon overbrengen om die enigszins te verlichten. De tranen biggelden over mijn wangen terwijl ze uitermate kalm en met precisie mijn gespannen lichaam dichtnaaide. Tijdens deze helse dokterspraktijken sprak ze bemoedigende woorden tot mij: “Rustig maar knullie, het gaat goed”. Ze ontpopte zich tot een ware cum laude afgestuurde chirurg want toen ze eenmaal klaar was zat de wond netjes dicht met de sjaal erom gebonden om het bloeden te stelpen. In de verte hoorde ik voetstappen en bekende stemmen opdoemen. Maar ik begon langzaam we te vallen en zei nog snel “Dankjewel” terwijl ik mijn ogen sloot. Einde in droppingsverhaal groep 1
