The main kitchen renovations are now fully under way, and the back car park area is being prepared for the two story extension to begin. Apart from some noise to contend with, so far I can report that everything is running smoothly. The kitchen upgrade will provide Rembrandt Court with a much improved environment for food preparation, safer and more upto-date for kitchen staff, and larger food storage capacity. I am now starting to receive more and more enquiries regarding the new rooms and so I wish to encourage all clients on the current waiting list for Rembrandt Court to contact me as soon as possible to secure the position of your choice in the new building. I also want to remind everyone about what is required should you be considering respite care at Rembrandt Court. First of all, respite care is always booked up for several months in advance. Please don’t leave your bookings until the last minute - where you can, book as well in advance as possible to avoid disappointment. In relation to respite, we will be commencing a new process of having you see you own GP prior to admission to complete the required medication chart and scripts before you enter care. In this way you are not relying on a locum service to see you on the day of your admission and it should make for a smoother transition into care. Please feel free to contact me with any queries you may have, and remember to get in as soon as possible for our new places! Until next time Kind regards,
Linda Trevaskis CEO

Community Update
Page 2
From the Manager Community Services Goede dag allemaal, I hope this winter issue finds you in good health. This winter brings with it the first wave of change in the way that community services will be delivered. This change is driven by the Federal Government’s Living Longer Living Better initiative which will give people entering into the aged care system a greater level of choice about the services they want and need. Packaged care, which currently is known as an Aged Care Package, or and Extended Aged Care at Home Package will now become Home Care Packages and include two new packages. These packages will be assessed as levels 1, 2, 3 or 4, and depend on the care needed with level 4 being the highest level of care. In the interests of transparency each new person entering into a community care package will be given a budget that outlines funding, personal contributions and expenditure. The flexibility to spend these funds will be far greater than present, but must be within a person’s stated goals. Our entry level of support which some of you may know as ‘Home and Community Care’ will stay pretty much as it is now, with some changes potentially mid 2014. So some exciting and challenging times are ahead. Our Uit en Thuis held at Rembrandt Court has had a temporary move in venue, to the Bay Football Club whilst building work on the Rembrandt Court kitchen is being done. Most of our clients have embraced this temporary move and welcome the change, albeit just for a few months. It has proved harder for us to provide some of our entertainment at the new venue, but then the trade off is a greater choice when it comes to the meals. Community clients are also advised that the back entrance to the building (near the Community Services Office) is now not able to be used as it leads directly into the building site for the new extension. All visits to our Community Office should be via Rembrandt Court’s front entrance. Met vriendelijke groeten en tot ziens,

Quality Update

From the Quality Manager We would like to say welcome to Lynn Ozbek who has started with the Quality Team as Workplace Health and Safety Officer. Lynn works Thursday and Fridays with us and has already been making a huge contribution to the team and the organisation especially in relation to reviewing our current systems and helping with the new building works. Please see her biography below. I am pleased to announce that Marilena Tripodi has been interviewed and accepted the position of Quality Officer. She has been working with us as Administration Support Officer since October and has proved to be a highly effective part of the Quality Team. She comes with a raft of experience in Quality, Food Safety and Lean Management and is already making great progress in several areas of work. We have been very busy in a number of areas of work in the last few months, most recently with a documentation review for Residential Clinical Care. We are developing standard tools and procedures across the organisation as well as making sure that staff and managers are aware of what is needed and what the processes are. We have made good progress so far but there are still another few months of hard work ahead. Thanks to all the clinical staff for their input and support. We are still waiting to hear if the Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR) application for more community places
has been successful. The decision has been delayed by Mark Butler, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, because of waiting for the new Aged Care Reform bills to go through parliament. We are hopeful that we should hear within the next few weeks and have everything crossed that we at least get some new community places. The Quality Manager has spent some time in reviewing the Organisational Risk Register with the CEO and Leadership Team. New risks have arisen with the forthcoming Aged Care Reforms and we have to be well placed and informed as early as possible to make sure that we are steering the organisation in the right direction and in line with the new proposed changes to the Aged Care system. There is also the chance of a change in government so we have spent some time trying to foresee what that might mean to the organisation in terms of funding and quality standards. It is obviously impossible to predict but we are trying to make sure we are as informed as possible with any potential changes that might come our way! The Quality Team have been involved in a number of training courses including: Understanding Accreditation, Writing Winning Tenders and Proposals, WHS in Aged Care and an in-house training course was provided by the Accreditation Standards Agency on the Accreditation Process for any interested staff.

Hi, I’m Lynn Ozbek, the newest member of the Quality team as Workplace Health and Safety Officer. I have a background working in local government in the UK and here in Adelaide. I have a degree in Environmental Health and started off my career as an Environmental Health Technical Officer in Food and Health and Safety. I then decided to do something completed different and moved to Istanbul, Turkey, to teach English. I guess I looked at it as my GAP year. I returned to the UK and started working as a Home Improvement Technical Officer, this involved assisting elderly and disabled home owners to apply for a housing grant which would help them stay
in their property longer. I followed this with a position at the City of Lincoln Council as a Property Standards Officer dealing primarily with Work Health and Safety.
Lynn Ozbek
We then came over to Adelaide in November 2009 and in February 2010. I was successful in securing a position at Adelaide City Council as the Trades Support Officer within Infrastructure Maintenance. I currently work at Dutch Aged care for two days a week and at Adelaide City Council for 3 days. I enjoy the mix of working in Local Government and Aged care and find it a refreshing change.

PREVENTION OF FALLS One-third of all falls in the elderly involve environmental hazards in the home.
3. Wear sensible shoes: Consider changing your footwear as part of your fallprevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with thick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. Likewise when walking with only wearing stockings.
4. To make your home (living area) safer attend to these hazards: Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways. Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas. Secure loose rugs with double-faced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant backing—or remove loose rugs from your home. CONCESSIONS HELP UTILITY BILLS Eligible South Australian residents may be able to receive a concession of up to $165 per year on their household energy bills, to assist with electricity and gas payments (including LPG bottled gas). Eligibility You may be eligible if you: hold a pensioner concession card or DVA Gold Card (TPI, EDA or War Widow), OR hold a Centrelink Health Care Card (including a low income health care card), OR hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card, OR receive an eligible Centrelink allowance* In addition, the address for which you are claiming the concession must be your principal place of residence and your name should appear on the electricity bill. Note: If you do not receive an energy bill from an established energy retailer, or your home does not have an electricity meter (for example, if you live in a retirement village or generate your own electricity), you will need to supply copies of receipts for ongoing energy costs, such as LPG receipts. If you live in a residential park, you may instead receive a single lump sum concessions payment to assist with household expenses, which includes an amount for energy. To be eligible for an energy concession, you must not be living with anyone who has an income of more than $3,000 per year, unless they are your spouse/domestic partner/dependant, or they receive an allowance from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs. (Eligible Centrelink payments are: Newstart allowance, Parenting Payment Partnered, Bereavement Allowance, Sickness Allowance, Special Benefit, Widow Allowance, Partner Allowance.) COMMON QUESTIONS Q. How do I get concession on my water bill? If you have a concession card (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or DVA Gold Card) you should contact your water business to register to have concessions automatically deducted from your bill or present your concession card when paying your bill. Q. How do I get the concession on my rates notice? If you have a concession card (Pensioner Concession Card, or DVA Gold Card issued by Department of Veteran's Affairs to War Widows (WW) or Totally/Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) Veterans) you should complete a form and take it to your local council together with all relevant information including your concession card.
Q. I am a concession card holder. Do I need to do anything? Customers who already receive energy concessions do not need to do anything. Energy concessions are delivered by energy retailers as a discount off the concession customer’s bill. The concession will be lower on future bills so the cost of energy will appear slightly higher. However the Commonwealth Government which is responsible for the carbon tax will compensate low-income households for this change by providing increases in pensions, allowances and income tax cuts through the new Commonwealth Clean Energy Future Household Assistance Package.

Computer games a factor in successful ageing Research from the North Carolina State University found that playing video games may have positive benefits for successful ageing. A sample of 140 independentlyliving older adults (average age of 77.47 years) were divided into three groups: regular, occasional gamers and non-gamers. The purpose of this investigation was to examine differences in psychological functioning (e.g., well-being, affect, depression, and social functioning) between older adults who play digital games compared to those older adults that do not play digital games—60% of the sample was either a regular or occasional gamer.) Results indicated that participants who played video games, including those who only played occasionally, reported higher levels of well-being. Those who did not play video games reported more negative emotions and a tendency toward higher levels of depression. The study was published in the Computers in Human Behaviour Journal. Findings suggest that playing may serve as a positive activity associated with successful ageing.
Using Facebook can give seniors a cognitive boost Preliminary finding from researchers at the University of Arizona found that online social networking websites such as Facebook have potential as an intervention to maintain or enhance cognitive function for older adults. In the pilot study, seven adults with a mean age of 78.5 years were given six 2 hour lessons on using Facebook and were instructed to use the website daily for six weeks. The participants were also administered a series of cognitive ability tests before and after the trial period. Results found that participants were 25% better in their “mental updating” skills. This skill is related to one’s ability to continuously monitor and to quickly add or delete the contents of their working memory. Although the authors expressed caution in interpreting the findings of their pilot study, the results give insight to the ability of the human brain to learn new tasks and the effect of social interaction on one’s cognitive abilities. A more comprehensive study is currently in progress. The research was presented at a recent International Neuropsychological Society meeting. Graphical Abstract
Highlights Sixty percent of the older adult sample was either a Regular or Occasional Gamer.
Gaming was not associated with age or education level.
Gamers performed better than Non-gamers on measures of well-being, negative affect and depression.

Senior nutrition problems
Wist u dat?
Senior nutrition problems are becoming more common. Malnutrition is one of the major elderly issues. For many reasons, seniors may begin to eat less. Many seniors experience loss of appetite or change in eating habits due to a variety of elderly issues. Sometimes they are no longer able to cook much. It is common, then, not to eat important foods from the primary food groups, or get necessary vitamins and mineral. The unfortunate consequence, which may be corrected by proper nutrition, is various elderly issues and poorer quality of life. So whether you cook for yourself or for a loved one, make sure what you make is packed with as much nutrition as possible. Elderly nutrition snacks can come in very handy. It is typical for the elderly to pick at meals or to snack in small amounts throughout the day. Unfortunately, sometimes this snacking is very unhealthy. We all know of the snack and convenience food is lacking in proper dietary nutrition. The sugar and bad fats and carbs are, in fact, detrimental to elderly people's sensitive health and lead to all sorts of elder nutrition problems.
Snack the healthy way Herring: Herring has a lot of nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids, as found in other ocean fish. Canned tuna and /or salmon: contains lots of healthy nutrients. Since it is pre-cooked, it can be used right out of the can on crackers or toast, or in a quick salad. Natural pumpkin seeds: Raw seeds are very high in vitamins and minerals. Granola bars: A wonderful brand is Kashi. These are natural granola bars and are low in fat. They have a good balance of health carbohydrates, protein and sugars, and other nutrients. Nut butters: Get unprocessed, fresh nut butters that maintain their nutrients (purchase from health shops). These can be used in all kinds of elderly nutrition snacks. Besides peanut-butter, try almond butter or cashew butter. Spread on whole grain crackers, or make a sandwich with whole grain bread. Bag of organic baby spinach leaves: Place them inside sandwiches, tortilla roll-ups and the like. They are delicious straight out of the bag and eat them like others eat chips. Iron: For sources of the elderly, the lack of iron can be seen with those who do not eat much. Good for iron are lean red meats or breakfast cereals. Fat: The fat intake for people elderly should be limited, not eliminated. You can limit fat by choosing lean meats, diary foods low fat and preparation methods that do not include frying. Protein: At this stage of life, protein is very important. Proteins are needed to support a healthy immune system and prevent muscle wasting. As energy needs are the lowest, Seniors

should eat high quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poultry and fish. Calcium: Calcium is one ingredient that older people do not receive the necessary majority. They believe that milk upsets their stomach, so they will avoid it. They should have about 1500 mg of calcium per day, and mild SMP can be used in recipes as a substitute for milk. Other foods such as yogurt, cheese, low-fat fat and broccoli can also help meet calcium needs.

Inhuldiging

Hello everyone, The building extensions have begun, there is some noise around the place, although thankfully we are still able to run most of the activities. Residents are enjoying the regular walks around the block (or indoors on wet days.) Exercise is popular as is craft, knitting, bingo, and excursions using the van. Special care residents enjoy games like sjoelen, hookey and puzzles, also walks and foot spas and sing-a-long. A baby shower was held for a staff member, the residents enjoyed the games and afternoon tea. They often sit in groups and have pleasant conversation amongst themselves. Volunteers continue to play a vital role in the Lifestyle Program. The residents look forward to these activities. “THREE CHEERS FOR THE VOLUNTEERS!”

The ‘Royal Society for the Blind’ spoke at length concerning the importance and benefits of regular eye check-ups. They enlightened us about the role of the RSB for the community. Senior constable Julie from the SA police talked about personal and home safety. ‘COTA’ came and spoke to us about ‘Medicines and You.’
For craft activities so far this year we have made: A Magnet note holder, stick caterpillar pencil for the fridge; and a beautiful card accompanying a small Easter gift. Our craft class is also trying their hand at watercolour painting. For entertainment we enjoyed listening to ‘The missing Links ‘(a new band this year), their music was excellent. We always enjoy entertainment from ’Just for kicks’ a regular group. ‘Terrie, Marie and Jackie’ the singing dog is a crowd favourite. ‘The Lustige Kapelle’ German band also played for us. Everyone enjoyed the Koninginnedag Market stalls. Funds raised will go towards our break up party at the end of the year. These stalls are so popular that we hold them twice a year.

The Auxiliary Hello everyone, Since the last issue of “De Blauwe Tulp” the Auxiliary held a very successful BBQ and Bingo afternoon on the 24th of March when just over $360 was raised. On the 11th of April the members of the Auxiliary held a farewell luncheon in the Silks Restaurant at the Morphettville Junction Entertainment Complex to say farewell to Riet Sirtoli and Sonja Versteegh. Riet Sirtoli has been a member of the Rembrandt Court Auxiliary for just over twenty-one years and Sonja Versteegh for eleven years. We thank them for their contribution over all those years and wish them both a happy “retirement.” The Auxiliary is pleased to welcome a new member Mrs. Corrie Ellingsen from Flagstaff Hill to their team and look forward to her fellowship at our monthly meeting and the various fundraising functions. Our Annual General Meeting will probably be held in mid July, and during the current renovations at Rembrandt Court and whilst the kitchen is undergoing alterations, the Auxiliary will NOT be conducting any fund raising activities until late August 2013. McDonald Conveyancing of Christies Beach will continue its sponsorship so that beer and wine can be sold at all our fund raising functions during 2013.
