History – Charles IV – Overview
While looking photos of Prague, Steve shows his lack of knowledge of the Czech Republic and its history. Upon hearing that Charles IV was a great and popular leader, Steve immediately concludes that Charles IV was in many battles and ruled through a show of strength and force, but the professor soon explains that Charles IV gained much respect and greatly increased his empire through diplomacy, elections and other such means. When Steve hears how much Czech people still revered Charles IV today, he wonders what it would be like to be Charles IV today and revisit Prague. As the cheers and applause from the loving crowd grow stronger, Steve learns about the life of Charles IV and his vision for Prague and the Czech lands, of all of which creates an ideal start to further study the house of Luxembourg and this period of Czech history. As Steve gets a bit overexcited about being a modern day Charles IV, the professor has to remind him that Charles IV died a long time ago and that his actions are fixed in the past. The professor then focuses the students attention to the formation of the past tense in English and the need for learning past forms of irregular verbs. To follow on from this the students are asked to think about historical Czech figures and write sentences about their lives and achievements using the past tense. Extended discussions to incorporate cross curricular subjects could include the importance of European politics on shaping the Czech Republic for European and global thinking, a discussion on the qualities of a good leader, city planning and differing styles of accommodation for the subject of personal development, or focusing the student’s attention to historical inaccuracies in films and on TV with the view to evaluating as to whether something is intended to be factual or just entertaining.
Suggested pauses 00.42 Elicit and write on the board some responses to Steve’s question. Do you know any famous Czech people? These names will be used at the end of the clip for the students to write sentences using the past tense, so try to encourage the students to name historical figures as much as possible.
01.41 Is Steve correct in that Charles IV made a big empire by fighting? No. It was through diplomacy and politics that his empire grew.
20.26 Discuss with the class what they know about Charles IV and try to write a list of things Charles IV did or buildings that were constructed during his reign. Ask ‘What else did Charles IV do and what famous buildings were build around this time.
As the students continue to watch, tick off the buildings on your list, that Steve and the Prof mention. Charles Bridge Prague Castle / St Vitus Cathedral Charles Square Designed Prague New Town Created wide roads
04.45 Tell the students which of their other suggestions are correct, and praise as appropriate.
05.12 Pause to see if the students are able to answer the Prof’s question. You could reiterate the question by asking ‘What tense do we need to use to talk about Charles IV’ Answer ‘the past tense or continue to watch until 05.21 to find out.
05.57 Clarify for the students that the past tense is usually formed by adding ed to the end of a verb before asking why the verbs on the screen (was, saw, built) don’t’ end in ed. Answer that they are irregular verbs or watch until 06.00 to find out.
End Ask the students to complete the tast set by the prof, by choosing a (deceased) famous Czech and writing 5 sentences about their lives. Ask students to come to the front of the class in turn to read out their sentences and see if the other students can guess how it is.
00.42 Žáci odpovídají na Stevovu otázku: Do you know any famous Czech people? Jména osobností zapisujeme na tabuli. Po skončení klipu žáci použijí jména ve větě k procvičení tvarů sloves v minulém čase prostém.
01.41 Ptáme se žáků: Is Steve correct in that Charles IV made a big empire by fighting? Odpověď zní: No. It was through diplomacy and politics that his empire grew.
20.26 Společně celá třída diskutuje o tom, co vědí o Karlu IV. a píše seznam věcí, které Karel IV. udělal nebo budov, které byly za jeho vlády postaveny. Ptáme se: What else did Charles IV do and what famous buildings were build around this time?
Zatímco žáci sledují klip, zaškrtávají na svém seznamu budovy, které Steve spolu s profesorem zmiňují. Charles Bridge Prague Castle / St Vitus Cathedral Charles Square designed Prague New Town created wide roads
04.45 Řekneme žákům, které z jejich tipů jsou správné.
05.12 Uděláme pauzu a přesvědčíme se, zda jsou žáci schopni zodpovědět profesorovu otázku. Otázku můžeme znovu zopakovat a zeptat se: What tense do we need to use to talk about Charles IV? Odpověď: The past tense nebo pokračujeme ve sledování klipu až do 05.21, kdy se dovíme odpověď.
05.57 Zopakujeme žákům, jak se tvoří minulý čas (ke slovesu obvykle přidáme koncovku –ed). Slovesa jako was, saw, built nekončí na –ed, protože jsou nepravidelná. Sledujeme klip do 06.00.
Závěr Vrátíme k seznamu jmen, který jsme vytvořili na začátku. Každý žák si vybere jednu historickou osobu ze seznamu a napíše o jejich životě pět vět. Potom žák předstoupí před třídu a přečte své věty, aniž by prozradil předem jméno. Ostatní hádají, kdo to je.
