Nederland in Aardobservatie • SCIAMACHY – Initiative by Paul J. Crutzen, Nobel Price 1995 – Start development 1988, launch 2002
• OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) – Start development in 1994, launch 2004
• TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument) – Launch 2014/2015
SCIAMACY Cooler by Dutch Space Radiant Cooler • Two-stage concept • Cooling 8 channels 125~175 K • In operation since 2002
OMI
Ozone Monitoring Instrument
FIRST DAILY URBAN SCALE MEASUREMENTS OF THE TROPOSPHERE
• Launched in July 2004 • On NASA’s AURA satellite • Recognized as world-class instrument, fully operational
• By Dutch Space, TNO, Patria and VTT • Program direction: The Netherlands Space Office (NSO) and FMI for Finland
OMI Measures the ozone layer °
OMI supplies data for the IPCC – OMI is the current standard for ozone measurements – IPCC = Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change • UN committee for climate
°
The ozone layer is expected to recover – CFC’s in the troposphere decrease since end years ’90 • Result from Montreal protocol

Luchtkwaliteit in Nederland °
OMI yields daily tropospheric NO2 (stikstof) – fossil combustion, traffic, energy plants
° °
Example graphs for 11 to 13/9/06 (www.knmi.nl/omi, www.temis.nl) Thus: – Large daily variations – NL. is not doing very well as compared to surrounding countries • Large density of population

Jaargemiddelden stikstof dioxide
° °
The sources coincide with cities The Netherlands shows up better than Ruhr and Po areas – But room for improvement

Tropospheric NO2 (stikstof) °
Every town > 100000 inhabitants forms a source – Shows car emissions

NO2 in China Yearly averaged tropospheric NO2 shows trend • Increase in air pollution 8 % per year • The resolution of the instruments has improved

TROPOMI TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (Dutch Space, TNO, KNMI, SRON, NSO, ESA)
What meten we met TROPOMI? De belangrijkste: -Ozon, O3 (hoog ok, laag: giftig) -Zwaveldioxide, SO2 (vulkanen) -Stikstofdioxide, NO2 (Uitlaatgassen, centrales) -Methaan: CH4 (broeikasgas)
TROPOMI •
Small ground pixels: 7 x 7 km2
•
Modern detectors – With fast electronics & Radiation hardness
•
Extended wavelength coverage – – – – –
UV1 270-310nm UV2 310-400nm VIS 400-500nm NIR 675-775nm SWIR 2305-2385nm
TROPOMI provides the combination: • Climate Research – ozone layer • Air Quality Measurements from space
TROPOMI • • • • • • • •
UV-VIS-NIR-SWIR spectrometer. Number of channels: 4 Spectral resolution: 0.25–1.1 nm Observation mode: nadir, global daily coverage, ground pixel 7*7 km2 Mass: > 150 kg (estimate) Power: 175 W peak (estimate) Data: 64 Gbits/orbit (TBC) Orbit: 824 km, sunsynchronous
–daily earth coverage
Hoe meten we?
‘Top’-of-the-atmosphere
Cloud effects
Absorption + scattering
Surface reflection (albedo, snow/ice)
Meetprincipe
2-dimensional CCD wavelength
~ 580 pixels
~ 780 pixels
viewing angle ± 57 deg flight direction » 7 km/sec
13 km (~2 sec flight)) 2600 km 12 km/24 km (binned & co-added)
Meetprincipe • ‘pushbroom’ – In tegenstelling tot ‘whiskbroom’ – Meting ground pixels parallel
pushbroom
whiskbroom

Resultaat: Sentinel 5 Precursor missie •
•
NL en ESA deel TROPOMI: onder leiding van Dutch Space – met TNO, KNMI, SRON – Opdrachtgevers: Netherlands Space Office (NSO) & European Space Agency (ESA)
•
