Conversation Tips for People with Hearing Loss Communication between hard of hearing1 and hearing people can be problematic, but can be done in a way that is comfortable for everyone. Hard of hearing people are often frustrated because they miss words and they have problems with following conversations. They also become frustrated when people refuse to respect the fact that they don’t hear well. People with hearing loss must be greatly focused2in order to be able to catch sounds, read lips and watch body language.
Tips for hard of hearing people 1. Let others know that you have a hearing loss. 2. Ask for help if you require it and tell other people what you need. 3. Ask for repeating if you need it – insist on repeating even when someone says "It's not important". If it was important to say the first time, it is important to say a second time, too. 4. If it’s too noisy, suggest a quieter place where you could continue a conversation. 5. Learn speech reading skills. Some organizations make lessons.
