didn’t grow up with Star Wars – it seems I sidestepped it by accident. My cousins devoured the original trilogy and would watch it again and again. When I visited them they were amazed that not only had I not watched them every day, without fail, since they’d become available on VHS (if the acronym confuses you, just ask your parents), but I hadn’t even heard of the films. So they patiently sat me down to ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, set the tape playing, and in came John Williams’ fantastic score, the iconic opening crawl and, moments later, a vast ship belonging to the Empire which took up the entirety of the screen. Despite the strong opening, my mind wandered and I found other things to occupy me; I was eight and easily distracted. In the years since, I’ve revisited the trilogy, and now have a deep and abiding affection for ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’, but I never truly grasped why the saga had the devout following that it


did. Cue: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. The opening is satisfyingly familiar: a score by John Williams, the usual opening crawl detailing the lay of the land, and then a shot of deep space. For many, all they’ll need is to hear the opening chords of the Star Wars theme and they’ll know they’re home (to paraphrase Mr. Han Solo) and that all will be well. I’m a pessimist, so I hold out a little longer. When Poe Dameron (played by the exceedingly charismatic Oscar Issac), a Resistance Starfighter, begins quipping wryly - despite facing terrible odds – I begin to relax a little. Once we get to spend time with the film’s central pair, the very wellmatched Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku, and Finn (John Boyega), a stormtrooper who finds his allegiances may be in the wrong place, I relax a little bit more. And with each scene I relax further: the Millennium Falcon appears

(I settle in the chair); Han Solo and Chewie appear (I prop my feet up); Kylo Ren takes off his helmet (now I’m on the edge of my seat); two characters face off whilst precariously stood atop a steely chasm (and now I’m sold on it all, hook line and sinker). And then comes Williams’ score again, playing the full Jedi theme as a lightsaber finally finds its home in the right pair of hands – and I’m grinning ear to ear. It took 31 years, but I now understand why so many people wish they could will the world of Star Wars into existence. I could detail the wry amusements on offer in the fabulous script; I could go into the smart plotting, which borrows from the tropes that George Lucas set in place, and, more often than not, improves upon them. But the less you know, the better. Catch the stellar return of the Star Wars saga, on board today.

fter the more meditative and cerebral ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’, which saw the two feuding factions of Panem (the name for what remains of North America in the dystopian Hunger Games future) making canny use of propaganda, we now have the concluding part, which sees the scheming President Snow (Donald Sutherland) turning his beloved Capitol into the equivalent of a new Hunger Games arena. From the outset it’s clear: many will die before there is peace in Panem. Some background for those who have somehow missed the phenomenal success of Suzanne Collins’ books in the late noughties, and the even more impressive box-office takings of the Hunger Games films in the years that followed. The central state/ district in Panem, which is known as the Capitol, controls the surrounding twelve districts. Every year the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to


fight to the death on live television; this is just one of the many ways that the Capitol keeps the other districts in line. But on the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen (an extremely charismatic Jennifer Lawrence) steps into the arena, and (intentionally or otherwise) gives the downtrodden people hope. Her nickname, Mockingjay, becomes synonymous with rebellion. The leader of the Capitol, President Snow, attempts to quell the growing unrest, and ropes Katniss into the 75th Hunger Games – but she survives, yet again. And then the war truly begins. Making matters more complicated, Katniss is torn between two comrades: there’s Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), who survived, and helped her survive, the Hunger Games; and Gale (Liam Hemsworth), the young man who kept her family safe whilst she was being used as a pawn by the Capitol. Now, as she and her fledgling army gear up to do battle – under the orders of the enigmatic leader of the rebellion, President Coin (a well-cast, and steely-eyed Julianne Moore) – Katniss is less sure than ever of

where she belongs; so instead she trusts her one overriding instinct: to find and end President Snow. Also making a welcome return are Woody Harrelson (a previous winner of the Hunger Games) and Elizabeth Banks (as an escort who helps shepherd the tributes – those selected for the Hunger Games – through the process) – although their screentime is much reduced. Of greater note is Philip Seymour Hoffman, in his final screen role. Although he initially seemed an odd fit for the world of the Hunger Games, his simple, honest demeanour, and his ability to command the screen with so few words and gestures, made more and more sense as the series went on. The central trio of Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth continue to do sterling work, but, as good as Lawrence is – and she’s very good indeed – it’s Hutcherson’s portrayal of PTSD (among other psychological issues) that truly grips you. don’t imagine that there are many who, a year ago, would have guessed that one of the best films to tackle the housing bubble collapse would come from the writer and director of ‘Anchorman’, ‘Anchorman 2’, ‘Talladega Nights’ and numerous other frenetic comedies. Maybe Adam McKay (the director in question) has raised his game because he’s been paired with cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (‘The Hurt Locker’, ‘Captain Phillips’, ‘United 93’) and editor Hank Corwin (‘The Tree of Life’, ‘Natural Born Killers’, ‘The New World’). Or perhaps it’s his clear dislike for the banks that used and abused the trust so many had in them – a hate he seems to have been harbouring since ‘The Other Guys’, which dabbled in attacking unfair banking practices – albeit in far sillier and goofier fashion than in ‘The Big Short’. Whatever the deciding factor is, if it means more films like this then long may it continue. Adam McKay and Charles Randolph’s script focuses on a group of outsiders in the world of high finance who predict the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s and decide to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed. These men aren’t heroes, but it’s hard not to root for them as they attempt to untangle just what the banks have been up to, and then decide to bet big against the banks. McKay is ably abetted by a dream cast that includes Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, among others. There’s also a surprising number of celebrity cameos, which are deployed as an unusual kind of stunt casting. Whenever a concept becomes

too complicated for his principal cast to explain, it then falls to Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez, Anthony Bourdain, and others (all of whom play themselves), to slowly but surely explain just what’s going on. It’s probably best described as being ‘knowingly’ patronising. This, surprisingly, somehow makes it both funny and okay. It will also leave you with a surprisingly good understanding of just how everything fell apart. McKay’s film is smart, engaging and funny – and if it helps keep another collapse from occurring by becoming part of the zeitgeist, then all the better.

he ‘Rocky’ franchise looms large in cinematic history. The music, montages and motivation are enough to make a grown man cry – and many men have. Though the Italian Stallion has now hung up his gloves, our old friend Rocky Balboa returns to the boxing franchise to pass his wisdom onto the next generation. ‘Creed’ follows Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the son of the late heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. The journey finds Johnson as a troubled misfit, but as his hunger to achieve boxing stardom grows, he seeks guidance, training and friendship through his father’s former rival: Rocky (Sylvester Stallone). Despite being the seventh film in the ‘Rocky’ legacy, ‘Creed’ does a sterling job in avoiding most of the well-worn tropes and formulas that we’ve seen in the earlier films. The script stills sticks with the traditional underdog story, as first seen in the original ‘Rocky’, but it manages to avoid feeling like a retread of that film because of Jordan’s Adonis, who is a very different kind of character. The film focuses on grassroots ambition and avoids the glitz and glamour that became prevalent in the latter ‘Rocky’ films. Jordan’s performance is soaked in a gritty zeal which is entirely engrossing. He portrays the forgotten son of Apollo Creed as a hurt, driven and passionate fighter. The emotional battles he fights are as interesting as his knockouts in the ring. Much of this can be put down to director Ryan Coogler, who did sterling work with Jordan on the


critically lauded ‘Fruitvale Station’. Nevertheless, what’s a boxing movie without a fight? Luckily we don’t need to find out here. The much talked-about match proves to be as enthralling and brutalising as you’d hope. Though Rocky is now firmly positioned at the ringside, his role as a coach to Adonis Creed is appropriate and satisfying considering his 40-year career. If this is the last ‘Rocky’ film that Stallone stars in, then it’ll be a fitting send-off. But somehow I think we’ve yet to see the last of him.

Then one day Angel meets Gilang (Stefan William), a famous singer who has chosen to retire due to a corruption scandal that his father was embroiled with. Although he’s retired, Gilang must still honour his contract and write and create new songs for his already scheduled album. His chance meeting with Angel makes him take stock; he pulls himself together and is filled with inspiration once again. Because of this, Gilang’s newly released album becomes a big hit and his music career looks promising once again. At the same time, he falls in love with Angel – despite their very different backgrounds. Unfortunately their romance doesn’t last long as Angel is diagnosed with a malignant cancer. She doesn’t want Gilang to know, so she ends the relationship…

This beautiful and romantic story is dedicated to the deaf and mute as well as those children with special needs – many of them must endure prejudices that should not exist in the 21st century. hen we think of zombies we immediately begin to picture a horde of decaying undead beasties, all of whom used to roam the earth as ‘normal’ civilised human beings. So imagine a story that features a ‘normal’ zombie, who has a normal job working in a mostly normal morgue. As quirky and odd as that sounds – and it’s supposed to be plenty quirky and odd – it works far better than you could possibly imagine. Olivia Moore (played by the thoroughly delightful Rose McIver) – better known, a little ironically, as ‘Liv’ – is a determined, career driven young woman training to be a heart surgeon. One night Liv is invited to attend a boat party and, having declined

so many invites so that she could focus on her studies, she eventually says yes after her fiancé, Major (played by Robert Buckley, who’s in square-jawed, all-American hero mode), urges her to go. Alas the party is set to end not only Liv’s dreams and aspirations, but also her life... At least after a fashion. After eventually coming to terms with her death and resurrection, Liv decides to drop all of her previous goals and dreams in order to work at the local morgue: a great place for keeping out of the public eye, and also the perfect place to satisfy her overwhelming craving for brains. The show’s brilliantly over-the-top set-up is helped no end by the standout casting choices: Rose McIver is immensely charismatic and immediately

likeable – even when in full-on zombie mode – and the supporting cast are just as good; there’s Rahul Kohli, who plays the ever-enthusiastic Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti; Malcolm Goodwin, whose character, a Seattle PD detective, pairs with Liv when she proves herself to be ‘psychic-ish’; and David Anders, who plays the highly charismatic Blaine DeBeers. The reason that the actors all click so well is almost certainly due to Rob Thomas, the co-creator of the show, who also created the much loved and much missed ‘Veronica Mars’. Now that the second season of ‘iZombie’ has begun in the US, this is the perfect time to catch up on what you’ve been missing.

t was way back in 2000 that a friend handed me a CD by a little known band called Coldplay, and he told me that they were the next big thing. Like many, I was mesmerised by the album ‘Parachutes’; six months later I managed to see Coldplay live when they were touring the album. Even though they were the support act at the time, it was clear I was witnessing a band

that would be filling much bigger stadiums before long. Fifteen years, six studio albums and 80 million record sales later, I have been handed the latest album from the little English rock band that could. Coldplay’s ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ is a follow-up to the 2014 release ‘Ghost Stories’; which unfortunately didn’t get its due, as the press

were more focused on the state of lead singer Chris Martin’s marriage than they were on the album. Within the first few bars of the first song you’ll be instantly lulled back into the wonderfully positive world that most Coldplay albums inhabit. The album features an impressive list of collaborations, including the American poet Coleman Barks, Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, and even Gwyneth Paltrow makes an appearance. ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ could be accused of trying to please all of the people, all of the time, and many continue to assert that Coldplay are simply too ‘safe’ in their manner and style. But as I listened to the album I quickly forgot the about the rumblings from the naysayers and got sucked into this collection of uplifting songs, which seem to cover numerous styles without once seeming out of place on the same album. I know that when I next get to see them live (and off the back of this album I intend to do it sooner rather than later) I will find myself a lot further back, and in a crowd many times the size of the one in which I first stood, yet I’ll sing just as enthusiastically to the choruses – many of which will be from their latest solid release.
