Tug Malta invests in new boats Tug Malta will be investing Lm4.5 million to purchase two new tug boats in order to improve the services it is currently offering in the Maltese harbours, to the Freeport and to the owners of the shipping lines. The investment, which will increase the efficiency of Tug Malta's services, is coming solely from the company and Tug Malta will not seek any assistance from the Government. The Minister for Investment, Industry and Information Technology Austin Gatt said that the company is able to do this because it is doing well financially. By applying a certain control over the operational and administrative expenses, Tug Malta manages to operate profitably. Minister Gatt revealed that the company is expected to have a pre-tax profit of Lm549,000 at the end of its financial year in September 2005. Tug Malta however still maintains a consistent service of very high quality without any detriment towards the services it offers to its clients, and in fact it answers ships' calls in less than an hour in 99.8 per cent of the cases. John Sullivan, Chairman of Tug Malta, said the two new tug boats are expected to be delivered in February and November of next year. The need for the new tug boats rose from the fact that the current fleet, consisting of six tugs, have certain problems such as lack of reliability in bad weather, lack of strength and not enough speed. The two new tugs will allow the company to offer a better and faster service, a smaller number of tug boats being required for each ship, and a decrease in the frequency of the tugs not operating due to bad weather.

First double-acting icebreaking supply vessel named The first double-acting large icebreaker, the icebreaking PSV Fesco Sakhalin, was formally named at the end of May. The icebreaking standby and supply vessel was ordered by FESCO in Russia from Aker Finnyards in Helsinki. Yrj”Julin, President of Aker Finnyards said: "This is the first icebreaker from Finland to Russia since the 1980s. Fesco is our old client; in addition to a number of Arctic cargo ships we have delivered six icebreakers for them since the late 1960s. Now we are very pleased to have continued this fruitful cooperation as well as to have re-established the long co-operation in shipbuilding between our countries." The design is a result of the long term R&D activity, which started already in 1989 with research on the operational conditions in the Sakhalin area in the Far-East of Russia: The vessel will be operating in the harsh Okhotsk Sea environment, with freezing temperatures down to -40øC and difficult ice conditions with ice ridges up to 20m deep and solid ice exceeding 1.5m in thickness. Fesco Sakhalin will work as standby and supply vessel on the Sakhalin-1 project, involving the development of three oil fields in the area, where total potential recoverable resources are estimated at 307 million tonnes of oil and 485 billion cubic metres of gas. Exxon Neftegas Ltd is the operator for the multinational Sakhalin-1 Consortium.
Odfjell tanker damaged in collision A CHEMICAL tanker operated by the Norwegian Odfjell group remains in a port in Indonesia following a collision with another vessel last week. The 28,053dwt NCC Madinah had discharged its cargo in Gresik, Indonesia, and was on its way to an anchorage when the collision with a small inbound Indonesian tanker occurred shortly before midnight on 6 July. Local sources say one person is missing and another injured from the Indonesian vessel, but there were no casualties among the 32 crew of NCC Madinah. The ship has not been released yet by the local authorities, an Odfjell official told Fairplay. He added that after the release the vessel will have to be dry-docked. He said the cause of the accident remained unknown. Both ships had pilots on board when the accident happened. NCC Madinah flies the Norwegian international flag – NIS – and is owned by National Chemical Carriers of Saudi Arabia. The 1976-built vessel is classed with Det Norske Veritas.

Growth in offshore energy market spurs Global Marine and SMIT to cooperate Global Marine Systems Limited, the cable installation and maintenance company, and SMIT Heavy Lift Europe BV, a division of SMIT International, have announced their intention to cooperate to meet the needs of the growing renewable energy market. Global Marine is a leading installer of the inter-turbine and shore connection cabling for offshore wind farms, while SMIT has more than 160 years experience of marine construction. The combination of Global Marine's cable installation and burial skills, allied to SMIT's extensive vessel fleet and offshore experience, creates a significant solution to the burgeoning offshore energy market, said the companies in a joint statement. "For Global Marine the offshore renewable energy market is an area of strategic growth and this relationship will enable the company to offer the very best installation service possible for wind farm projects," said the statement. "Global Marine will benefit from SMITs extensive fleet of vessels combined with its in-house engineering management and corporate infrastructure. Conversely, SMIT will gain from the installation skills GlobalMarine already brings to the offshore renewable energy market." "From SMIT's perspective, this relationship is something that will greatly benefit both businesses. With the recent acquisition of a jack-up barge with 600 tonnes lifting capacity SMIT is seriously looking at the offshore energy market. The company has found in Global Marine a collaborator with an enviable reputation and excellent track record, with more offshore cable installation project management experience than any other," the statement concluded.
Loose nut caused ferry accident THE grounding of the ferry Queen of Oak Bay on 30 June was caused by mechanical failure of an engine speed control device, according to BC Ferries. The preliminary investigation report, released, said a control arm connecting the engine speed control governor to the engine fuel rack disconnected when a nut came off the attachment bolt. A cotter pin that normally prevents the nut from coming loose was missing. The propulsion system ‘ over speeded’when the bold disconnected. The ‘ over-speed trips’protective system then engaged and shut down the propulsion system as the ship entered the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal area, Canada, as a result of which the ferry ploughed into 24 pleasure craft before grounding. According to BC Ferries president David Hahn, the entire fleet has been ‘ checked and cleared’in response to the accident report findings. Damage to the Queen of Oak Bay was minimal and sea trials began on 6 July. The vessel is expected to resume normal operations today.

Passengers were already feeling the connection and gave the first new U.S.-flagged cruise ship in nearly 50 years rave reviews after the five-day voyage from San Francisco. "We thought five days at sea would be boring, but it's been anything but," said Jeanne Tweedy, 55, of Colorado Springs, Colo. "There's absolutely nothing we could want for." "The service has been super and the staff are just wonderful," added her sister, Kathy Cleary, 54 also of Colorado Springs. The women also had high praise for Capt. Kjell Nesheim, who has experience cruising the islands aboard the NCL's Pride of Aloha, which began interisland cruises a year ago. The Pride of America is one of two ships from the failed "Project America" program that Norwegian bought after the U.S. cruise ship company American Classic Voyages declared bankruptcy in 2001. The ship, along with the Pride of Hawaii, were completed in Germany. When the Pride of Hawaii is delivered in May 2006, "we'll be bringing almost 8,000 passengers per week here to Hawaii," Robert Kritzman, NCL executive vice president and managing director for Hawaii. Sales have been strong through the end of the year and bookings already are being made well into next year in response to an East Coast marketing campaign, Kritzman said. "That's a sign of the strength of Hawaii's tourism right now," he said
NAVY NEWS
Dampier to be patrol boat base DAMPIER will be the base for two new Armidale Class Patrol Boats to bolster security for Australia's largest natural resource operation, the North West Shelf. Defence Minister Robert Hill said the West Australian port was selected based on the Navy's operational requirements. He said it would optimize maritime surveillance and response capabilities in the strategically vital region. "This is delivering on the Howard government's election commitment to buy two additional Armidale Class Patrol Boats to provide dedicated surveillance and monitoring of the North West Shelf," Senator Hill said in a statement today. "The patrol boats will provide an enhanced quick reaction capability to respond to potential threats, including terrorist attack, and will add to the Navy's overall border protection capabilities. "The patrol boat crews will fly into and out of Dampier to maintain patrol cycles on a rotational basis." Senator Hill said major maintenance requirements would be carried out in Darwin, where the families of crew members are expected to live.

"This decision will also provide flow-on economic benefits for the region, particularly in relation to logistic support of the ships and transport and accommodation for the patrol boat crews," Senator Hill said. The initiative is part of a $139.3 million package over four years to protect Australia's offshore oil and gas facilities on the North West Shelf and protect Australia's borders. The first of the ADF's 12 new Armidale Class Patrol Boats, HMAS Armidale, has already been delivered to the Navy on time and on budget and was commissioned on June 24 in Darwin.

Warsaw steps in to help Polish yard POLAND’ S Agency for Industrial Development is to provide Naval Shipyard in Gdynia with PLN25M ($7.3M) as a stabilisation loan to be paid back by the end of the year. The defence ministry has applied for the builder to be corporatised, with the government retaining all the shares, as a first step towards possible privatisation. There have been rumours that Naval Shipyard would be merged into Gdynia Shipyard or even combined with Gdynia repair specialist Nauta. Once there has been a change to the company structure, together with the necessary redundancies and reorganisation of the yard, the government is expected to inject fresh capital. Naval Shipyard recently had trouble paying employee wages when one of its customers delayed payments. The yard is short of military orders and has struggled to find merchant business: it now has a mixture of repair, conversion and newbuilding contracts

Skandi Navica laying Snohvit carbon dioxide pipeline Statoil in Norway says Skandi Navica is currently laying the pipeline which will allow carbon dioxide separated from production on the Snohvit project to be injected back into a separate formation on the Barents Sea field. The carbon dioxide injection pipeline is being reeled onto the seabed in five stages. The pipeline runs out to the storage structure, which lies beneath the gas-bearing layers on the Statoil-operated field, from the Melkoya receiving terminal in northern Norway. Statoil has been separating carbon dioxide from its Sleipner West gas production and storing these volumes in a sub-surface formation in the North Sea since 1996. Injection and storage of this kind is set to reduce total carbon emissions from the two fields by no less than 1.7 million tonnes per year, including 700,000 from Snohvit. "Our Snohvit pipeline marks the first offshore injection of carbon dioxide from a land-based plant," says Jorunn Klovning, manager of health, safety and the environment for the Tromso Patch/Snohvit. Injection of carbon dioxide beneath the seabed will substantially reduce the environmental burden at the Melkoya plant, she points out. "At the same time, we're winning valuable experience which will be highly significant for continued development of carbon deposition in future projects."
