For nine days a year, I swap my honourable position of director of DDW for something even more beautiful: acting as host to thousands of visitors and an equally impressive number of designers who present either their finalised work or work in the making.
Het fesexperimenting and finding tival probeert hetzelfde te new ways. Frame Pick of the Day To start off Dutch Design Week, Frame recommends spending Saturday evening at Objects for Sale, where the designers have produced bowls, scarves, and furniture - that visitors can actually afford to take home. Objects for Sale is the third annual exhibit by a collective of young designers. Last year’s show, Objects Rescoped - focused on ‘re-imagining’ the uses of everyday items, and was a great success. This year the designers have flipped the concept around, examining production, and the impact

The manufacturing process expands the designer’s role, challenging them to create items that are produced and priced for everyday use. Young designers who are involved in every step of the production of their own work is a running theme on opening weekend - on Sunday, designers at C-Fabriek will show simple machines they’ve constructed to produce their designs.

With items in three price ranges - from under €50 to over €500 - it’s also a chance for the discriminating Dutch Design Week visitor to pick up souvenirs. We’re particularly excited to sweep up the simple, quirky rings cut from euro coins by Lex Pott, a best known for his oxidized mirrors and metal furniture. Other highlights include Marcia Nolte’s brightly coloured leather wallets, David Derksen’s flask inspired lamps, and porcelain by De Intuitiefabriek. We just wish Objects for Sale had designed a cheap way for us to lug all our purchases home.

∞ engl i sh | www. ddw. nl

Trend Book 2012 kost €15,-. Area East Sectie C: Sat and Sun 12:00 - 21:00, Mon till Fri 16:00 - 21:00. Press Center @ Strijp-S In order to actually create the buzz Dutch design deserves, we try to be the best possible host for visiting media and press. Hence, we have turned our headquarters into the official Press and Media center. Here we will provide journalists, bloggers, photographers and camera crews with special info kits and the latest news hot off the press. Fresh from that same press - and brand-new this year - is a series of tabloids issued during Dutch Design Week. Twelve pages packed with design, daily put together by our enthusiastic editors. Feel free to feed us with your latest news, gossip, and info. The Press Center is opened daily from 10:00 until 20.00. Find us at DDW-HQ (25). Mail to
[email protected]. Staying overnight Looking for a nice hotel to spend a couple of nights during Dutch Design Week? We recommend the Best Western Premier ART Hotel Eindhoven - a unique hotel in a monumental Philips factory in the center of Area Inner City. A special design team gave each hotel suite its own style and atmosphere, enabling the guests to experience the spacious rooms in a new and surprising way. More info at: www.arthoteleindhoven.com Share (y)our Brave New World Enter (y)our virtual Brave New World too at www.ddw.nl. Follow @dutchdesignweek on Twitter and share your experiences using #DDW12. Dutch Design Week is also on Facebook: www.facebook.com/dutchdesignweek
DDW Design Routes On request, a number of specialists studied this year’s program for you. Together, the events they highlighted form a thematic Design Route. Just by connecting the dots on the map, you’ll easily follow the choice of a journalist, designer or entrepreneur. By bike or on foot, each route takes up to one day. Five routes and tips can be found on this map. The others are online at our website, www.ddw.nl.

Unexpected interaction ‘Unexpected interaction’ in the centre of Eindhoven. The centre of Eindhoven, called Area Inner City, is going to be programmed with the theme ‘Unexpected Interaction’. The full offer will contain inspiring design on six squares, eleven cultural institutions, twenty-four shops and food & beverage establishments. Fed by an arousing afternoon and evening program, you will experience a strong mix of design, technology, music, fashion and food at unordinary locations.
Unexpected designers Starting Saturday October 20, on six squares in the centre, the following designers can be viewed with their installations: - Maarten Baas, Stationsplein - Lucas Maassen & Erwin Thomasse, De Markt - Nacho Carbonell, Catharinaplein - Kiki van Eijk & Joost van Bleiswijk, Fensterrein - Martin Schuurmans, Clausplein - La Bolleur, Wilhelminaplein The squares will be physically connected during the evening with a laser beam.
Can’t be missed Every participating entrepreneur and institution in the centre will host design expositions and activities. During DDW they can be recognized by an eyecatching marking. These are designed and made by Collaboration-O. The vast amount of (spontaneous) activities are mostly set in the afternoon and evening.
Opening The design collective Design Reaches Influential New Knowledge Society (D.R.I.N.K.S.) has founded ‘Supporters Vereniging Brain Port’ (S.V.B.P.) during their annually meeting. This makes Design Reaches Influential New Knowledge Society Vereniging Brain Port (D.R.I.N.K.S. S.V.B.P.) the official twelfth man of Eindhovens Design. ”Support your local design” said the patrons of Eindhovens Design. The procession will gather at the Wilhelminaplein, near the design object of La Bolleur on Saturday, October 20 from 19:00 hrs.
‘Unexpected Interaction’ is made possible by SOEC, EHV365 and Capital D.

I don’t sleep, I dream I don’t sleep, I dream duidt op het gevoel van wegdromen in je binnenwereld.
∞ e ngl i sh | www. ddw. n l
The Design Profession, unlike the arts, has the responsibility to create value for people in their environments. Design creates value in many ways; cultural, social, innovation, functional or emotional. There is also economic value; and this is probably one of the best contributions that design makes: design creates value for business. Whether is designing a brand proposition that is very attractive to the interests of consumers and increases sales or designing a product range that is very user friendly and ergonomic and therefore very differentiated from the rest of the competitors, or designing an identity system that results in a strong brand experience that creates top line sales and at the same time achieves efficiency in execution resulting significant cost reductions to the bottom line, Design, more and more, is a strategic competence for creating value for business. This column is dedicated to highlighting this topic, stimulating a dialogue and discussing examples of how design is creating value for people and business during Dutch Design Week. Gus Rodriguez has an extensive track record in design led-innovation and brand experience design for business. He has been vice president at Philips Design leading design in Consumer Electronics, Philips’ largest business. He was responsible for the Consulting practice serving many international and reputable clients. He has also been design director for Steelcase office environment systems and has worked in agencies in Chicago and New York. At present he is leading the FlexPool Service in Capital D, which brings the design community and business leaders together to address todays’ complex brand and innovation challenges.

Design en techniek hebben elkaar nodig. Fr i ts va n Hou t | E x ecu t i ve V ice Pr esi dent a nd Ch i ef M a r ket i ng Officer A SM L
Vandaag: nummer 9 in de EH&I top 25: Hella Jongerius!
