Welcome Speech Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities University of Indonesia, Head of Department of Linguistics, Distinguished speakers, and all participants, Ladies and gentlemen, First of all, let me warmly welcome you all to the Faculty of Humanities University of Indonesia. It is a great honour for us to host this conference, and it is our hope that it will be an interesting and learning experience for all of you. It is the third time we organize and host this seminar: International Seminar on Transdisciplinary Linguistics (ISTL). From this year, this seminar becomes biennial. The aim of this seminar is to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary researches in linguistics, especially in Indonesia. Language is a complex human communication system that needs to be approached from different perspectives. This year, we received many abstracts from researchers from many more disciplines. As a result, the selection of abstracts became more intensed and competitive. More than one-third of the total abstract has been turned down. We have selected and accepted ... research papers that are going to be presented today. These research papers cover a wide range of topics, from written systems to language technology. Before I finish my opening remarks for our seminar, I would like in particular to thank all committee of ISTL who help me organize this seminar. They have made an invaluable contribution towards preparing this seminar dan have made it possible for us all to be here today. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Head of Department of Linguistics who have given us tremendous support to make this seminar run as planned. Ladies and gentlemen, Finally, I once more welcome you all to this seminar. I hope you enjoy this seminar. Thank you very much. Depok 21 November 2016 Chairperson of ISTL

Closing Remarks
Ladies and gentlement, Distinguished speakers on plenary as well as parallel session, A language as a system of signs is required to symbolize objects and state of affairs that exist in the real world. A word comes to mark a group's identity, gender and social stratification. The language used by speakers is a means to express him/herself as an independent person. Language is required to record historical events and become knowledge for today's society. A discourse should be made to testify in judicial process, for the accused to get justice. Linguistics is required to find meaning, thought or reference, to investigate whether a person has lied. We have discussed that linguistics, as an independent study of language, is not a tool used separately and solely to give solutions to language-related issues. In the context of currentness, linguistics cannot deny interactions with other studies. In analyzing languagerelated problems, linguistics may use tools from other sciences; on the one hand, linguistics contributes to solving problems in other fields, such as health, law, forensic, science & technology, economy and business, literature, translation studies, language teaching, and certainly social humanities. In short, linguistics gives strategic contribution to professional works that use language as an instrument, as a tool both to analyze data and to sharpen the focus of discussion. In this seminar, we Departemen Linguistik, FIB UI gained a lot of knowledge and insight of the speakers and the participants in the discussion at this seminar. Hopefully, through this seminar, you have also gained new knowledge that can be disseminated in the respective colleges. I hope, this shared knowledge will continue among us, either through seminars, publication of books, as well as joint research. Thank you, and see you in the next seminar.
