W.IJzerman Molyvos 1988 Framed photograph in plastic sleeve / 2012
39

W.IJzerman Molyvos 1988 Details
All of a sudden this image appeared back into my head after it had been invisible for many years. The image of an orange ruin floating in nothing. This image is the memory of a pic-

ture my father once made of a ruin at the island of Molyvos in Greece. He made it at night with a long exposure shot trying to stabilize the analog camera on a rock. He made one

picture. Once he got back in Holland and saw the end result he came to the conclusion that this was not what he expected. This strange image of a glowing ruin in space did not

match what he had originally seen.

Years later this image comes back in my mind, totally unexpected, eerie as it is. It makes

me really exited so I go in search of the picture in the family photo albums. After some time

of searching I find it. But surprisingly I find it not in the family photo albums but in my own,

the only one I ever had. I must have put the image in there at a certain point, perhaps be-
sleeve, wood, acrylic paint, glass
cause my father wanted to throw it away and I didn’t want him to, or just because I liked it.
The exhibition
The reason why this image is so special to me, is not only because of its autonomous qualities (the pure image on itself is quite capable of being a work) but also because this picture

contains a story. My father never practiced an art related profession, actually next to mak-

ing family photographs he never made ‘images’ at all. But to me this photograph that he regards as being failed is a wonderful result of an experiment. Experiments like I do daily

in my studio. The story this image contains is deeply rooted in the relationship between my father and me and reveals part of the origin of the objects I make. This story is vague and

blurred by background noise but that is not important. Important to me is that this picture is

made by my father and it somehow got into my photo album, in my archive, in my work.
