Photograph of a plant

Description of the technology Equipment Biogas plants installed by BIOGAS NORD working on the storage-flow-process. Therefore one or several digesters are installed where continuously substrate is flowing through. Due to the fed of substrate into the first digester the sludge level within the digester is increased and treated sludge is flowing through the overflow to the next digester or storage. If after the second digester another storage is installed, this procedure is repeated once more. Generally BIOGAS NORD proposes the installation of a two-phase digestion system. Both digesters are fully mixed and can be operated in mesophyllic (35-37 °C) or in thermophillic (55 °C) temperature range. This combination leads to a stable process with good hygienisation results and a minimised effort as far as area requirements and digester volume are concerned. On the other hand it aims at maximum gas yield which means at the same time maximum greenhouse gas reduction. All digesters constructed by BIOGAS NORD are standing cylinders made of reinforced concrete. Most of the digesters are equipped with a ground and wall heating system. All digesters built by BIOGAS NORD are covered with a double membrane. The inner membrane provides the gas-store, whereas the outer membrane is of UV and weather resistant material. Air is blown between the two membranes to keep the outer foil stable in shape and wind resistant. Regarding cogeneration units BIOGAS NORD proposes to use highly efficient duel-fuel engines with an electrical efficiency of 35 % and thermal efficiency of 50 %. For ignition these engines require Diesel/heating oil in the range of 5 -10% of the total electricity output. On request BIOGAS NORD can deliver gas engines which operate without ignition fuel. The agitators installed are from different suppliers. Speed and blade shape of the agitators depends on the size of the digesters and the substrate which will be treated within each specific Biogas plant. Most of the Biogas plants built by BIOGAS NORD are operated manually. If it is considered to control the entire system from a central computer, the required hardware, software, sensors and its fine-tuning and development can be provided by BIOGAS NORD also.

BTA Biotechnische Abfallverwertung GmbH & Co. KG Rottmannstr. 18 D-80333 Munich Germany Mr. Harry Wiljan +49-89-5204606 +49-89-5232329
[email protected] www.bta-technologie.de
Company Profile BTA Biotechnische Abfallverwertung GmbH & Co. KG was formed in Munich in 1984. Already in 1983 an independent team of engineers, scientists and tradesmen had founded a company called REA Gesellschaft für Recycling von Energie und Abfall mbH for the purpose of developing an ecological answer to the growing waste-disposal crisis in the Federal Republic of Germany. Following the same team founded BTA with the intention to raise capital for further research and development. The first objective was the further development of the then unknown "BTA Process" and its introduction in the market. The share capital is now 3 Mio. Euro, divided between about 420 shareholders, showing herewith their engagement in developing and realising environmental conscious technologies. BTA and its affiliate REA have developed a new combination of wet pre-treatment and anaerobic digestion for the utilisation of the organic fraction and therefore the largest single portion of the waste stream from domestic, commercial and agricultural sources. Furthermore, this process is able to treat the residual waste in order to minimise the volume of and the hazards posed by a residual repository. By means of the wet pre-treatment non-biodegradable components of the waste are efficiently removed and a homogenous pulp is produced. In the following digestion system the degradable organics are anaerobically digested producing biogas and anaerobic compost. Besides the production of high quality compost the BTA-Process is producing enough biogas to cover the energy demand of the plant itself and in addition to feed a surplus yield into the public energy net. Thus, the larger portion of the organic waste is used as a source of renewable energy and by the CO 2-neutral production of biogas an important contribution to the conservation of the world climate is made. Between 1986 and 1995 BTA operated a pilot plant in Garching, near Munich, where continuously research and development projects were realised and which was used to demonstrate the BTA-Process. The R&D-projects were financially supported from the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology and the Bavarian Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Description of the technology Company's activities According to its Articles of Association BTA feels itself obliged within its activities to the development and realisation of environmental conscious technology for the utilisation of organic waste components. 1. Research and Development After the foundation of BTA the primary objective was the development of the BTAProcess. Following BTA continuously went on in its research and development activities. The Garching plant was used for the further improvement of the BTA-Process and its adaptation to various fractions of municipal solid waste, allowing BTA to maintain its leading role in the area of pre-treatment-technology and digestion of organic waste and to react promptly to new demands within the market. The further development of the Process is based on the practical experiences of full scale plants already in operation. In addition BTA is running its own laboratory, where the fermentation behaviour of different sorts of waste and the potential gas production can be analysed. So BTA is able to offer adapted concepts for the utilisation of organic waste to private as well as public clients. 2. Plant delivery First of all the licensees are responsible for plant delivery. But BTA is involved in the particular projects as subcontractor e.g. for engineering work and the delivery of plant components. But BTA itself is also able to deliver complete plants. 3. Engineering Based on its research and development activities and the long-standing practical experiences BTA provides the following services: − concept development − basic engineering − detail engineering − carrying out of approval procedures − delivery of plant components and complete plants − process control engineering − start-up and optimisation of the plant, − training of the operational staff and − after-sale services.

Description of the technology De combinatie van processtappen behelst o.a. voormenging, hydrolyse, mesofiele & thermofiele vergisting, navergisting.
