JUNE 30 – JULY 10 2016 INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE

Soms even raar als relevant. Even prachtig als verontrustend.
VOORWOORD
War, love, sex, feminine image and women’s oppression, fear, pop culture, exploitation, obsessional neurosis. Just some themes we encounter daily, especially these days. For the Julidans choreographers it is no different than for us, their audience. Through their work, each in their own way, they communicate with us on these themes and show us their vision or their questions. We can therefore safely say – well, safely ... – that contemporary dance is in the prime of its life. With the comforting bonus: the power and beauty of the dance. Dance lies closer to us than we think. We encounter dancing people daily in our society, and sometimes that is so obvious you don’t even think about it. On television, during a party, out dating, on streets and squares. Dance is part of rituals and celebrations, dance is an expression of identity, dance can act as an outlet or incantation, or as pure entertainment. The body is our mouthpiece when words are unnecessary or inadequate. The diversity of context inspires the creators of dance of today, each rendering its own surprising translation into theatrical dance forms. Sometimes the (art of) dancing itself is the starting point. Pere Faura for example dives into his personal dance history and our collective memory and gives his own interpretation to four iconic dance fragments. Christian Rizzo also looks
back, to the nightlife of the eighties, with Ian Curtis, front man of the iconic band Joy Division, as guide. Other choreographers are driven by universal, social issues. In Stones In Her Mouth, the Samoan Lemi Ponifasio connects ritual dance forms with the deteriorating position of Maori women as a result of the influence of colonial powers, while Arco Renz in COKE actually uses commercial dance entertainment to ask questions about society. Of course, the body as the voice of inexpressible feelings remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration. How does dance relate to physical disability or compulsion neurosis, this is Rachid Ouramdane’s question, where – wonders Mette Ingvartsen – lies the border between the body of the vulnerable dancer and the public environment in which he/she appears? In these uncertain times, top performer Lisbeth Gruwez pours herself into the manifestation of fear, a pure, animal emotion, in the human body. Thus, Julidans 2016 is a reflection of the human condition, shaped in a fascinating, poignant, indepth, awkward and funny dance. Sometimes just as weird as relevant. As beautiful as it is disturbing. Alienating, and yet closely related to our daily reality. Come and have a look, and recognize yourself. Anita van Dolen and the Julidans team

French punk-rock choreographer combines disco and club dance on a golden dance floor.
The multi-talented Christian Rizzo (France, 1965) was a rock mucisian, fashion designer and a graphic artist before he entered the dance world. His work le syndrome ian, made for four female and five male dancers, is the third part of a trilogy in which he incorporates popular dance forms into the theatre and gives them its own unique spin. In the first part D’Après une histoire vraie (Julidans 2014) eight bearded men mixed contemporary dance with popular mediterrean folk dance while accompanied by two drummers. The second part, Ad Noctum (2015), is inspired by ballroom dance. Now it’s club dance’s turn – where once Rizzo’s love for dance truly began.
Londen, eind jaren zeventig. Hoe konden disco en new wave tegelijkertijd bloeien? Sinds 1 januari 2015 leidt Rizzo het befaamde ICI (International Choreographic Institute) in het Franse Montpellier.

HOOFDPROGRAMMA
London, late seventies. Disco is at its peak with all its flowing dynamic movements. But on the other side of the channel, a whole other kind of dance is emerging. It is dark, poetic club dance – electric, pointed and jerky. How could disco and new wave flourish at the same time? Can they be embodied in one body? In his exhilarating group work le syndrome ian Christian Rizzo ponders over this question. And for this occasion, upon a golden dance floor. Subbass meets Ian Curtis. The fervent club dancer Rizzo once accompanied a girlfriend to an audition for choreographer Matthilde Monnier who asked him to dance a small piece and against all expectation, he was invited to join. This is how he entered the dance world. With his own company l’association fragile, he has made over thirty choreographies and art projects since 1996. He has aleady appeared at Julidans three times: with the solo Autant vouloir le bleu du ciel et m’en aller sur un âne (2005), a group piece involving South African dance (Imbizo e Maxweni, 2008) and with D’Après une histoire vraie (2014). Since 1 January 2015 Rizzo has led the renowned ICI (International Choreographic Institute) in Montpellier, France.

John Travolta meets The Dying Swan.
The exaggerated smile of Gene Kelly. The cool expression of John Travolta. The abstract movements of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The virtuoso Russian ballerina Maja Plisetskaya. What do they all have in common? More than you would think: they all have a place in our collective memory, as an undeniable part of dance history. In No dance, no paradise the Spanish choreographer Pere Faura (Barcelona, 1980) touches off on moments where his love for dance began. He dances his memories of four icons of dance: the tap dance from Singin’ in the Rain and the disco dance from Saturday Night Fever, but also the contemporary dance from Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Rosas and the classical ballet of The Dying Swan. Long ago, Faura began as a musical dancer before he let himself be re-schooled for contemporary dance. In this performance, he unites all of his sources of inspiration. In this performance, he unites all of his sources of inspiration. This cheerful and touching performance clearly portrays all the many faces of dance.

No dance, no paradise

John Travolta meets De stervende zwaan.
Pere Faura has proved from his very beginnings that elements out of popular culture- whether they be striptease, disco, musical or film - can enrich dance by shining a new light on it. Faura is one of the internationally requested choreographers who was trained at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam and subsequently went on to gain his Master’s Degree in Choreography. His ultra-personal approach towards his subjects takes him from classical ballet at one moment to popular cinema at another.

Somewhere between the sexual revolution and today. What does the naked body tells us.
Precisely ten years ago, the Danish Mette Ingvartsen (1980) made an appearance in the Julidans programme I Like To Watch with her work to come, in which she conveyed the pleasure of dance (and sex) to the audience. She also presented Manual Focus at the festival. Feeling, emotion, perception and body movement continued to be crucial themes in all the works of this Danish choreographer, who in 2003 finished her dance training at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels and is currently associated with the Kaaitheater in Brussels.
METTE INGVARTSEN

HOOFDPROGRAMMA
In her new performance cycle The Red Pieces Ingvartsen investigates what nudity and sexuality mean in our society. The sexual liberation in the seventies are juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Nudity was used at that time as a way to demonstrate against war, capitalism and nuclear energy... Later, many artists (including Ingvartsen herself) also made a statement by taking the naked body out of the bedroom and showing it in public. The social connections that our sense of pleasure is chained to were examined in the first two parts 69 positions and 7 Pleasures. Both perfomances can be seen at Julidans 2016 (for 7 Pleasures go to page 35)

69 positions
In the solo 69 positions Ingvartsen takes you on a guided tour through the sexual history, from the sexual liberation in the sixties (against the backdrop of the Vietnam War) to how we treat nudity and sensuality today. In her daring reading/ performance, she draws on countless examples from art, films, literature and documentaries. This work contains, for example, a re-enactment of Carolee Schneemans famous Meat Joy from 1964, wherein this controversial artist lets eight naked performers experiment with wet paint, sausages and raw chicken and fish. As a guide and as a dancer, Ingvartsen confronts you with the boundaries between intimacy and openness, between physical desires and the standards of society.
© Fernanda Tafner

Craving contact and attention in a weird little microcosm.
Meg Stuart (US, 1965) grew up as the child of two theatre directors and during the eighties trained as a dancer in New York. She has been acclaimed and vilified for her radical conception about dancing: for her dance is energy which is released when you bring the body in extreme situations. In her innovative work she handles human emotions in a recognisable, appealing way.

“Why do we become ill when others give us no room to breathe?” Why do we long for others but run away as soon as anyone comes near? What can we tolerate from others, and what not? Stuart constantly finds new ways to ask these questions and each time she manages to completely bamboozle the audience,”wrote the Flemish newspaper De Morgen about UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP.

Six performers (including actor Kristof Van Boven) and three musicians meet at an unspecified location. Impossible desires and illusions drive them to this escapist sanctuary. They seem to withdraw from reality in order to design their own fantasy world in a new place. To the driving sound of bass guitars, rousing percussion and a warm piano, they cling to each other and to life. First they yearn for contact like a bunch of cave men but later they reveal themselves to be more like entertainers in a comic variety show, always craving attention.

Breathe in, breathe out… What if fear takes hold of our bodies, how do we breathe that fear away again?
In the duet We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay – a quote from the film Pulp Fiction – Lisbeth Gruwez (Belgium, 1977) looks at our fear reflexes. Specifically, she examines what fear does with our breathing. We all know fear: that restricted, awful experience that directly effects your breathing. You’re watching a horror film, staring into an abyss or the actual fear of an attack on the metro; your brain has an alarm centre that goes into full alert with all the warning bells going off. Your breathing falters, your heart begins to pound, you begin to sweat and shake. In a state of fear, the human body is in its most primitive instinctive state. Your body prepares itself: for flight or freeze?
Daarop volgde Birth of Prey (2010) in Julidans NEXT.
Lisbeth Gruwez and dance partner Nicolas Vladyslav balance on a thin thread between panic, serenity, tension and relaxation. Sound designer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe uses the breathing of the performers as building blocks for a breathtaking audio collage.

Portuguese drawer of dance pulls you into a digital picture book.
The Portuguese choreographer and dancer Luís Guerra loves to draw and this will come as no surprise when you see his work. In his stage scenes, every colour, every line and every ray of light has been tenderly considered. On the dance floor he draws with the body, as if animations have come to life. This will be the first time for a Dutch audience to get acquainted with this Portuguese super talent.
In 2015 danste Guerra tijdens Julidans in Carvalho’s voorstelling Weaving Chaos.

CIE. LUÍS GUERRA FOG
PT
In FOG (originally titled NEVOEIRA, 2013) four dancers (including Guerra himself) appear in a block of light behind a transparent screen as if they find themselves in a diorama. Quickly and with great virtuosity they begin to move with mechanical and often voluptuous movements. Their dance seems to have been fast-forwarded, their movements scripted by a computer. As quickly as the movements follow one another in part one, they then seem to stand still in time in part two wherein the dancers appear like mysterious figures in green, red and blue. They move to the trance-like music as if they were intangible holograms. When the dancers, grimacing like clowns, finally approach towards the audience in part three, the transformation game is complete. From the very beginning, spectators imagine themselves to be on another planet. With FOG Luís Guerra created a visual work of art that is sure to momentarily disturb every audience member who ever witnesses it. Following his training at the national dance academy in Lisbon, Luís Guerra worked with many of the great choreographers, many of whom have been at Julidans, such as Rui Horta, Emio Greco | PC, Marie Chouinard and Tânia Carvalho. In 2014 Guerra danced in Carvalho’s performance of Weaving Chaos at the festival.

Lang onderdrukte Maori-vrouw krijgt haar stem terug in muzikale, ritualistische dans.
Long repressed Maori woman finds her voice again in a musical, ritualistic dance.
With his work, Lemi Ponifasio, originally from the Samoa islands, wants to stir up a dialogue about these burning issues. In his work full of dance, ritual theatre and graphic art, he has put his birthplace on the map all over the world. His choreographies are often founded on the traditions and stories of the peoples from the Pacific Ocean and he is able to couple these with such current topics as climate change, migration and technological advancement.
In Stones In Her Mouth zet Lemi Ponifasio tien sterke Maori-vrouwen in de schijnwerpers.
LEMI PONIFASIO
Stones In Her Mouth is about the original inhabitants of New Zealand. Before the European took over New Zealand, Maori culture flourished. The arrival of the Europeans meant that Maori women were now slaves. A totally different fate than what they were used to in their own tradition where woman was seen as the first human! In Maori culture, women are treated with every respect because they are able to create life, dance and poetry. In Stones In Her Mouth Lemi Ponifasio puts ten strong Maori women in the spotlight. In new songs based on the mōteatea – elegies, protest songs, love songs and curse songs of the Maori women – they throw all their travails on the table about how they relate to social, economic, religious, cultural and political upheavals. They demonstrate their ability to adapt, their resilience and their rage against the suppression, the powers that be and even against western feminism.

One hundred years of war as seen through folk dances from every corner of the world.
In MONUMENT 0 - Haunted by wars (1913-2013) Hungarian choreographer Eszter Salamon (1970) shines a new light on the peoples that have been conquered, invaded and enslaved during the past one hundred years of war with the West. Along with six dancers she went off in search of tribes and folk dances that once existed in current conflict zones on all of the five continents. She collated fifty dances: ritual dances to prepare warriors for battle, peaceful or exuberant dances to celebrate the warrior’s victory and their return, dances of defeat or loss voodoo-dances for example. While conquering each of these peoples, the West brutally tried to eliminate their culture and dance. Salamon sets the ancient history of dance opposite the recent conflict history and in this way demonstrates who came out on top.

Eszter Salamon, who lives and works in Berlin, studied Hungarian folk dance and classical ballet in Budapest. Her own background comes back time and time again in her work which also often addresses social phenomenons. She blends divergent dance forms in her choreographies that she has staged in Europe, Asia, the United States and South America. This is the third time that Salamon will appear at Julidans. In 2006, she presented Reproduction during the I Like To Watch in Paradiso programme, a piece about the way in which our bodies are used in marketing and advertising campaigns. In 2011, she was at the festival with Dance for Nothing, a rebellious choreography based on the experimental composition Lecture on Nothing (1949-1950) by John Cage. Last year, at the Holland Festival, she presented a new version of Reproduction for eight dancers from the Cullberg Ballet in Sweden. Two dancers show how to make your greatest strength from your weakness.
How can you overcome your own limitations and fulfil your dreams despite all the obstacles? This is the question that Algerian-French Rachid Ouramdane (France, 1971) asks in TORDRE. The piece is a duet (or two simultaneous solos) for two entirely different dancers. The two women have in common that they both made their forte of what once was their weakness. Since her childhood Lora Juodkaite has the uncontainable urge to spin around her axle, something in which she has specialized as a dancer – meanwhile she does it with vertiginous speed. Annie Hanauer did not let her prosthesis-arm stop her from choosing a life as a dancer and dances in complete freedom, full of enthusiasm and energy. Ouramdane tries not to erase the divergent properties of these two dancers but uses it as an essential strength for the performance, to show how freeing extending your boundaries can be.

Since Rachid Ouramdane started making dance shows in 1995, his concerned look on the world has been noticed. He often drew for his work from true tales and events. He created Les morts pudiques about suicide among young people, Ordinary Witnesses about victims of torture and Looking back, with disabled dancers. At Julidans 2013, he presented the impressive Sfumato, about a group of people who have fled their home country to try and create a better life elsewhere. “Disturbing like only the best art is”, wrote the New York Times at that time.

Fourteen dancers at the barricades for a dream community. With the collaboration of the Swedish breakthrough artist of 2015.
Since Jefta van Dinther made his breakthrough as a choreographer with his solo Grind (2011), the world has been his playground. Van Dinther trained at the Amsterdam Theater School, works in Stockholm and Berlin and presents his work in countless international theatres and festivals. As a dancer, Jefta van Dinther worked with Mette Ingvartsen and Leine Roebana, among others. In his works, van Van Dinther, together with sound designer David Kiers and light designer Minna Tiikkainen, creates surrealistic universes full of flashing lights, shadows, techno beats and other hallucinogenic effects.

Van Dinther has a world première at Julidans with his second big work at the Cullberg Ballet. In Protagonist fourteen dancers throw their bodies into battle in order to make a point. “In songs of revolution and dances of evolution we tell a story about how people come together and take up a role,”says van Dinther. A battle is an inevitable part of this. “In the battle to belong, the search for shared meaning and mutual faith, a community takes shape. Protagonist is a story about taking care of each other, kinship and connection, but also about alienation, control and isolation.” In addition to the fourteen dancers, van Dinther also included the singer Elias, the breakthrough music sensation in Sweden of 2015. His debut title track Revolution was a mega hit there. In 2013, Jefta van Dinther made his successful main-stage production Plateau Effect with the renowned Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm. The world première took place at Julidans and he was later awarded the Swedish Theatre Critics’ Prize for this. This production is currently still touring around the world. The playful, light choreographies of Itamar Serussi (Israel, 1978) are never without humour and improvisation. In TEFER he examines with six male dancers from the Ballet of Rome the gestures of the male body, set to original music by Richard van Kruysdijk (inspired by sounds of the madcap cartoon La Linea from the seventies). Ironic in tone, and with a powerful voice, TEFER lays bare all the conflicts that the male body carries with it: the familiar divide between rugged manliness and vulnerable sensitivity.

WORLDPREMIERE Whether she performs for young people or adults, Keren Levi (Israel, 1972) does everything with her characteristic enthusiasm.
In The Dry Piece XL, performed by eight naked dancers behind a projection screen, an important role has been put aside for the voyeuristic spectator. Levi draws our attention to the gap between beauty and pornography which is inherent to the violent (male) look on the (female) body. She has been inspired by the images of women from the musical choreographer Busby Berkeley from the thirties (who used women as geometrical characters in his choreographies) and the post-feminist writer Naomi Wolf, who states in The Beauty Myth that what we call beauty is a cultural myth, originated to keep women under control by locking them up in their body.

A performance about entertaining to survive and survive to entertain.
De Duitse, in Brussel gevestigde choreograaf Arco Renz (1980) combineert in zijn werk populaire cultuur, traditioneel danstheater en hedendaagse dans.
Due to his enormous fascination for Asian dance, German choreographer Arco Renz (1980), established in Brussels, routinely travels to Asia in order to work together with artists there. For COKE, he travelled to Manila, the capitol of the Philippines. He jumped into the studio with six Philippino dancers, actors and entertainers including a drag queen, a macho dancer and some members of the girl group Sexbomb Girls. The performance shows how life in Manila is saturated with dance and entertainment: on TV, in bars and clubs, and on stage. Anyone who feels the need to get loose, finds their escape in dance. But, this is not only just a fun celebration: the entertainment industry is hard. It provides a living for many residents of Manila, but also results in much escapist and consumptive behaviour. The title COKE references the connection between entertainment, pleasure, consumption and danger; the leaves of a coca plant can be used just as easily for an innocent beverage like Coca Cola as for the ever-destructive cocaine. Renz shows the fun side of dance as well as the dark side: dance to survive, dance to forget, dance to numb yourself.

In his work, Arco Renz combines popular culture, traditional dance theatre and contemporary dance. For Dreamlands (Julidans 2003), he was inspired by the traditional Balinese dance puppetry tradition. Crack (2011, with Amrita Performing Arts) covered the growing individualism of the new generation of young Cambodians. Renz was one of the first to graduate from the P.A.R.T.S. dance course led by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Brussels. He later went on to work with the American dramatist Robert Wilson, among others. He has been creating his own works since 1997. In 2000, he founded his own company Kobalt Works in Brussels.

DUTCH PREMIERE
Mette Ingvartsen started in 2014 a new cycle of work entitled The Red Pieces. Julidans shows two pieces of that cycle: 69 positions (page 15) and 7 Pleasures. In 7 Pleasures Mette Ingvartsen zooms in on seven forms of pleasure with a group of twelve performers. What gives us and how do we enjoy pleasures, how does our body find joy and pleasure beyond our daily life, while enjoying, can we escape from the conventional behavior expected by society ? To what extent are our physical pleasures free, no social links attached? The dancers try out movements which deviate totally from what our social standards prescribe. Thus Ingvartsen makes us aware of our physical limitations. She breaks through the cliché images of nudity and sexuality by giving us a clear view of the body in search of pleasure. In a long sensual dance the bodies of the twelve dancers come together, touch each other, melt together, until one large, enjoying body remains. After the performance the Rotonde of the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam is your dance floor. Be welcome!

Always unpredictable choreographer delivers a trilogy about intimacy, passion and the banality of love.
Dance maker Hofesh Shechter (Jerusalem, 1975) presents a trilogy about the good and the bad sides of humans in love, lightly based on the film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The evening opens with barbarians in love (2014), a piece for six dancers dressed in white like good angels, scintillating with emotion and set to a baroque musical score. In tHE bAD (2015) we are witness to a kind of dance- with- the-devil set to an explosion of electronic dubstep grooves. The night ends with the sensational duet Two completely different angles of the same fucking thing (2015) wherein a most ordinary man and a very ordinary woman, each with their good and bad sides try to connect to each other.

In 2008, Hofesh Shechter (Jerusalem, 1975) opened the eighteenth edition of Julidans, and from that moment on has been a rising star in the international dance world. The energetic and thrilling diptych In your room and Uprising formed the first Dutch acquaintance with this masterful artist (in 2014, Nederlands Dans Theater added this diptych to their repertoire). In 2008, Shechter had just begun his own dance company in London, after he had spent some time with the famed Batsheva Dance Company in Israel and even followed a course study in rock music. The confrontational aspect to how he approaches social issues in his work has the world’s hair on end. His dynamic, physical style blending rock and folk dance still contributes to this. No one was left unmoved by his piece Political Mother (2011, in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam), wherein he asked how far an individual can go in serving an ideaology, and if he is ready to die for this - set to a uncompromising mix of rock, metal and folk all composed by the choreographer himself.
May we suggest to combine with Lali Ayguadé (Julidans NEXT) on July 10.

Which language does pop music speak?

In #LOSMICRÓFONOS Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol dive into a world that is always around us: pop culture. They wrote a rhythmical script full of idols, song titles and song fragments and show which associations their bodies have with all of these texts. With much fantasy and humour they string the entire history of pop together. Spectators will experience one moment of recognition after the other - because this is the effect that pop music has. Your thoughts will stray off to linger on a melody, an artist, or a band. Or perhaps to a lost love, your adolescence, a dumb mistake, or a vacation long-ago.....

A woman is frantically searching to find her way.
How can you discover your own identity with all the baggage you have been saddled with since birth? How does everything you experience come together to form you as a person? How can you free yourself of all that baggage that you probably inherited from your family? The two Argentinian choreographer/ dancers Ayelen Parolin and Lisi Estaràs present a fascinating solo about finding your own identity.

Rising star Ayelin Parolin (Argentina, 1976) grew up in Buenos Aires where she also enjoyed her dance training and she now lives and works in Brussels. As a performer she worked with many choreographers, including Mathilde Monnier and Anne Lopez. By now, her work has been seen throughout all of Europe. In her 2004 autobiographical solo 25.06.76 (her date of birth) Parolin gathered fragments from the performances she was a part of as a student, performer and choreographer. She continued to do this solo over the years, each time adding new fragments. While she was pregnant, Lisi Estaràs substituted for her during this performance and from that moment on, a special bond was forged between these two performers. Lisi Estaràs (Argentina, 1971) studied dance in Argentina and Jerusalem, Israel and since that time has been dancing with some of the best choreographers. She worked for the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, Israel and since 1997, has been dancing for Les Ballets C de la B in Brussels, Belgium (among others, in the choreographies of Alain Platel and in Tempus Fugit by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui). She also creates her own works.
Have you ever imagined you body as an overflowing bucket?
So full that nothing more can be digested? And all the information that you are besieged with cannot be processed? Everything goes right by you, your senses are sedated and your head can no longer come up with an idea. The two performers in Spotted of the Icelandic Margrét Sara Guðjónsdóttir spur you to consider the dreadful state of individualism, soullessness and exhaustion in which find ourselves. They create an atmosphere as if a film of their lives is being played in slow-motion. the electronic sound-scape by Peter Rehberg brings another dimension to this.

Choreographer Margrét Sara Guðjónsdóttir is from Iceland, she studied in the Netherlands and she now lives and works in Berlin. Since 2007 she has toured with her work internationally. Icelandic artists are veritable story tellers able to forge new fantasy worlds live on stage. In Guðjónsdóttirs dance works, the figures always appear to be slightly out of this world. It is not a restless scene, but stilled. Guðjónsdóttir began her performance series Blind Spotting in 2014 in Berlin, Spotted is a part of it. In 2015, Guðjónsdóttir was artist-in-residence at the Swedish Cullberg Ballet, that offers independent choreographers space to develop and the opportunity to work with the top dancers of the Cullberg.
Highly personal solo about the power of reflection.
Nemen we onze verantwoordelijkheid of sluiten we onze ogen?
The Spanish choreographers Marcos Morau (Valencia, 1982) and Lali Ayguadé (Barcelona, 1980) created Portland, a breathtaking performance. How do we as humans deal with what we see happening around us in the world? Do we take our responsibility or do we close our eyes? And do we still take the time to reflect?
In kwetsbare, ontroerende bewegingen. Haar persoonlijkheid als danseres is ongeëvenaard.
On the dance floor we see a white square panel and a flag of the United States. We hear the the sounds of Obama’s inauguration speech and we hear the sounds of a shooting at a high school. But there is also the music of Ludwig von Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata and Für Elise. Against this backdrop, choreographer and dancer Lali Ayguadé dances a quiet, highly personal dance. She does not react to what she hears, she does not take action; does not reflect. The movements are touching and vulnerable. Her personality as a dancer is unparalleled.
MARCOS MORAU

Marcos Morau, a rising star in Spain, is founder of La Veronal, a club of artists representing the dance, film, literature and photography worlds. They make works with which they want to move the audience. Morau’s perspective is farreaching: he makes references to graphic art from the Renaissance just as easily as he references the films of Pasolini or the modern dance of Jiří Kylián and William Forsythe. Morau is often asked to create something for the larger international dance companies such as Scapino in Rotterdam and the Göteborg Ballet in Sweden. In 2014, he was at Julidans with Siena, concerning the many ways how artists across the centuries have depicted the human body. A film without words about the familiar quest for love.
Zoveel mensen, zoveel levens. Zoveel twijfels, zwaktes, talenten.
So many people, so many lives. So many doubts, weaknesses, talents. All searching for their strengths and for a meaningful existence. And let’s not forget, all searching for love, of course!
Tegenpolen ontmoeten elkaar. Love and fear are in the air.
In Kokoro (Japanese for ‘spirit’, ‘heart’ and ‘thought’) Spanish choreographer Lali Ayguadé (Barcelona, 1980) brings together four very different dancers: one female contemporary dancer, one dancer from the ballet, one from the modern dance and another with roots in hip hop and acrobatic dance. Together they search for meaning and love. How to they handle obstacles in their paths? What throws them out of balance? What gives them hope? Opposites collide. Love and fear are in the air. As in a film without words, accompanied by a cinematic sound-scape, a story unravels that is just as familiar as it is surprising.

The Uruguayan video artist and choreographer Tamara Cubas (1972) likes to enable encounters between people with different backgrounds on the dance floor. What happens when you put together a a group of unknown people with entirely different identities and backgrounds? How do they form a group, a body? How do they remain themselves within it? How does the balance of power come about? Tamara Cubas explores the boundaries: between individuals, between private and public, between art and society.

In DRILL three athletes come together in an endless nightly training session. Naturally, competition arises. All that typical macho behaviour gets a whole new meaning, however, once all the sprinting, jumping, turning, falling and accelerating fuse into a choreography that builds to climax and finishes in a euphoric state of exhaustion.
