Huygens ING Jaarverslag 2012
Huygens ING: Op koers
Huygens ING: On course
The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands (Huygens ING for short) is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). It was founded in January of 2011 when the Institute for the History of the Netherlands (ING) and the Huygens Institute merged. After devoting the necessary attention to setting up the organisation in 2011, the focus in 2012 was on structuring our research programme. Naturally, actual research had continued in the interim. This document is a summary of the direction we took and the results we achieved in 2012.

Mission and objectives Huygens ING performs fundamental, advanced and interdisciplinary research to gain new insights into developments in the Netherlands. The institute serves fellow researchers, the education sector, the business community, the media, the heritage sector and everyone who needs new and reliable information about Dutch history. The institute’s main research areas are: history, literature, philology and digital humanities. Huygens ING not only wants to perform innovative research, but also desires to create social value by making its products accessible for the wider public. In this way, the institute delivers research value as well as social and cultural value. One of the strengths of Huygens ING is that it produces high-quality source publications and research data, develops tools and performs innovative research. The institute combines traditional (and increasingly scarce) humanities knowledge of sources and texts with expertise in the fields of computer science and software development. The institute sees itself as a humanities research laboratory in which there is room for experiment. Huygens ING’s ambition is to be at the vanguard of text and source research. Its digital editions, source publications, corpora, databases and related tools set the tone: they are innovative in terms of theory, methodology and technology. The institute attracts attention and publicity not only in the international academic world, but also in Dutch society. It therefore carries out a number of projects with a high public profile and has close ties with university research and the education sector.

Organisatie
Organisation
Following the merger of Huygens and the ING in 2011, an institute-wide discussion was launched about the research programme which was completed in 2012. The three starting points of the programme are that research studies should be methodologically experimental and innovative, multidisciplinary and based on primary sources. Alongside institute-wide attention for new methods, the programme has three main, content-related lines, focusing on the development of Dutch society, the creation of the Early Modern knowledge society and the Dutch literary heritage. As is usual in the humanities, these themes, particularly the first and third, comprise various projects each of which individually is of considerable scope by academic standards.

Jaarverslag . 2012 . Huygens ING
In 2012, the KNAW drew up an outline memorandum entitled: De contouren van een vernieuwings- en stimuleringsprogramma voor de geesteswetenschappelijke instituten van de KNAW [Outline for an Innovation and Incentive Programme for the Humanities Institutes of the KNAW]. In this document, the KNAW expressed its intention to innovate the humanities by combining the forces of its humanities institutes in a KNAW Humanities Centre. The Centre is to be located in Amsterdam and will involve an intensification of mutual collaboration in the fields of academic research, collections and services, operations and e-humanities technology. The individual identity of each institute is the starting point in this regard. Huygens ING endorses the objectives sketched in the Outline Memorandum. The digitisation of sources and research practice is the most important development in the humanities. This development demands a major investment in IT support, and the increased interlinking of this support and the research itself. Huygens ING has already taken major steps in this direction. By joining the cluster of KNAW institutes, to which the latter also applies, this investment will deliver better yields. Huygens ING will, however, have to make sacrifices. For the majority of staff, the clustering in Amsterdam means relocating or a longer commute. Moreover, the current location of the institute in The Hague is very convenient due to its proximity to the National Archives and the National Library of the Netherlands.
In december 2012 nam dr.
Henk Wals departed as Director of Huygens ING in December 2012. In 2004, the KNAW had appointed him Director of the Huygens Institute (at the time, still the Constantijn Huygens Institute). He was in charge of a far-reaching expansion of the remit of the institute as well as a re-orientation. The merger of the Institute for the History of the Netherlands (ING) and the Huygens Institute took place under his leadership in 2011. Huygens ING is grateful to him for all his efforts for the institute over those eight years. Professor Lex Heerma van Voss, Head of the Political-Institutional History research group, succeeded Henk Wals as Director.
At the end of 2012, the organisation and management was as follows:

Wetenschappelijke resultaten
Academic results In 2012, virtually all the academic results came from projects that had been started by the two institutes. The figures are set out in the table below. 2011 constitutes the baseline measurement against which the results can be assessed in the years ahead. Regarding comparisons with earlier years, the figures can only be compared to the Huygens Institute because the ING applied a different method of counting.
Lectures/addresses as keynote speaker
In 2011 and 2012, the volumes of series published by or on behalf of the institute were digitised. This explains the high figure in the category “Digitised version of older, print edition”. The remaining volumes of the Rijks Geschiedkundige Publicatiën will be digitised 2013 and will be accessible via www.historici.nl.

The Netherlands Is Reading: Willem Frederik Hermans In 2012, Huygens ING was intensively involved in the “Nederland Leest” campaign of the Collective Promotion for the Dutch Book Foundation (CPNB). The CPNB has been organising the campaign every autumn since 2006. The book that was highlighted for the entire month of November was Willem Frederik Hermans’ novel De donkere kamer van Damokles, 1958, which was the first of Hermans’ books to gain him a wide audience. In 2010, the novel was published in volume 3 of the Volledige Werken. This scholarly edition forms the basis for the various reprints that were published within the framework of the “Nederland Leest” campaign. Some 750,00 copies were printed, making De donkere kamer van Damokles the scholarly edition with the most copies ever printed in the Netherlands. Huygens ING was active in the “Nederland Leeest” campaign in many different ways. At the request of the Dutch Reading Foundation, the Hermans team produced a short film about De donkere kamer van Damokles for the youth page of the “Nederland Leest” website. An exhibition was created in collaboration with the Letterkundig Museum (Museum of Literature) and, in collaboration with that same museum and the Bibliotheek Den Haag (The Hague Library) a special “Nederland Leest” evening on De donkere kamer van Damokles was held in the Centrale Bibliotheek (Central Library) in The Hague. Huygens ING staff member Peter Kegel engaged in a discussion with Hermans biographer Willem Otterspeer and literary critic Elsbeth Etty. Philip Freriks, ambassador for “Nederland Leest” moderated the discussion. An exhibition of photos of Hermans was created in collaboration with the Nederlands Fotomuseum (Netherlands Museum of Photography) in Rotterdam, and Huygens ING researcher Jan Gielkens participated in a debate on two giants of Dutch-language literature, Hermans and Louis Paul Boon, organised in collaboration with Louis Paul Booncentrum (the documentation centre for the study of Modern Literature in Flanders) in Antwerp. The press also devoted attention to the Hermans research of Huygens ING. NOS-Nieuwsuur (Dutch television current affairs programme) and Opium TV (Dutch television talk show) focused on De donkere kamer van Damokles with visits to the Hermans archive and the Letterkundig Museum. In de Volkskrant (Dutch national daily newspaper) Jan Gielkens and Peter Kegel were Arjan Peters’ guides on his visit to the Hermans archive. In the mean time, normal work on the Volledige Werken of Willem Frederik Hermans continued. Volume 15 (Beschouwend Werk) was published in September 2012, and contained the pieces Wittgenstein (1990) and Malle Hugo. Vermaningen en beschouwingen (1994) among others. Volume 4, containing the novels Herinneringen van een engelbewaarder. De wolk van niet weten (1971) and Het Evangelie van O. Dapper Dapper (1973) was published in 2012, at the end of October. Eleven volumes of the Volledige Werken have now been published.

Special events during the whole of the year
On 1 March, the Theological University in Kampen awarded Gerrit de Graaf a doctorate by for his thesis on the cultural interaction between Reformed Church missionaries and Papuans in the Boven Digoel Regency from 1956 to 1995. Mr De Graaf wrote his thesis as part of the Index of the “Dutch Mission Archives” project. On 14 June, Han Jordaan was awarded a doctorate by Leiden University for his thesis entitled Slavernij en Vrijheid op Curaçao; De dynamiek van een achttiende-eeuws Atlantisch handelsknooppunt. This thesis was one of the goals of “The Dutch and Dutch Culture in the Atlantic Region c. 1670 – c.1870” project. Gerrit Knaap was a co-supervisor. On 25 January, Huygens ING released an online database with historical information on 9,000 associations, recognised as legal entities by Royal Decree, from 1855 to 1903. Among these associations are clubs with greatly varied objectives such as school associations, societies, singing clubs and housing corporations, as well as political organisations like the Society for the Well-Being of the Javanese. Although it was known that associations had flourished for a time in the Netherlands, up until now it had not been easy to get a clear picture of this. The database makes this much easier. On International Women’s Day (8 March) at the “12 Hours to Be Present” meeting in De Balie in Amsterdam, Els Kloek kicked off the “1001 Vrouwen uit de Nederlandse Geschiedenis” crowdfunding campaign , a compilation of 1001 biographies of famous women of the Netherlands. Crowdfunders were asked to adopt one of the 1001 women for an amount ranging from 15 to 500 euros. The campaign was publicised through a leaflet, a facebook page, a twitter account, a promotional video clip and www.1001-vrouwen.nl website. The campaign closed in 2013, at the end of February, with the publication of the book of the same name. In a year’s time, private funding to the amount of 70,000 euros was raised, making this one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns in the Netherlands. On 20 March, Common Fate, Common Future, a publication of Huygens ING and the Luxembourg Centre virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE), was presented by State Secretary Ben Knapen during a state visit by Queen Beatrix to Luxembourg. Queen Beatrix referred to the collaboration between the two institutes as a fine example of European cooperation. Common Fate, Common Future covers the background of the euro up to the oil crisis in the 1970s. It shows that a common monetary unit had already been a subject of discussion among European countries soon after the war, in 1947. This is much earlier than had been assumed. The book demonstrates that the problems of a common monetary unit, such as sovereign control of national budgets, had been recognised decades ago.

Op 10 en 11 mei werd in Amsterdam een internationaal congres georganiseerd over Imitation, Translation and Transfer; perspectives on the dynamics of neo-latin and the vernacular.
Special events during the whole of the year
The “Scholarly Digital Editions, Tools and Infrastructure” international symposium was held on 20-21 March 2013, within the framework of the Interedition project initiated by Huygens ING. This symposium offered an overview of developments in the field of digital methods and technologies for literary and historical research. Results like CollateX (automatic text collation), StemmaWeb (computer supported stemmatics) and Juxta demonstrated how different projects can benefit from shared development efforts. International collaboration is of great importance in the development of software and methods for textual scholarship. The active, international open source development community created by Interedition promotes the sharing of technological knowledge, standards and code. This increases the quality, reusability and durability of data and tools in the textual scholarship community. On 10-11 May, an international conference entitled “Imitation, Translation and Transfer: Perspectives on the Dynamics of Neo-Latin and the Vernacular” was held in Amsterdam. Huygens ING staff members Tom Deneire and Jan Bloemendal organised the conference in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam and Radboud University. The programme included lectures by twelve international speakers. The subjects ranged from Quattrocento Italian translations, elegiac poetry in sixteenth century France, to seventeenth century circulation of knowledge and seventeenth century German scholarly culture. On 21-22 May, Huygens ING hosted a workshop on “Mutinies in the Age of Revolution, from the Mid-Eighteenth Century to the 1840s”. Lex Heerma van Voss organised the workshop in collaboration with Marcus Rediker (University of Pittsburgh), Clare Anderson (University of Leicester) and Niklas Frykman (Claremont McKenna College). It turned out that mutinies can be shown to have taken place on all the earth’s seas, and that they were interconnected in a world that was already becoming globalised. Cambridge University Press published the results of the workshop. On 25 May, the database of 19th century Roman Catholic religious fraternities in the Netherlands was launched. The database contains information on 4,400 fraternities. Roman Catholic fraternities were lay societies and were an all-but-forgotten part of the Rijke Roomse Leven Roman (the period in which Roman Catholic church life and institutions flourished) that only waned in the 1960s. Although the history of the fraternities stretches back much further, it was only in the nineteenth century that Church authorities began using them as a social instrument to bind the faithful more closely to the Church, to advocate a life of piety and obedience and to increase the use of sacraments like confession and communion.

As part of the NWO-subsidised project “Biblical Criticism and Secularization in the Seventeenth Century”, on 30 August-1 September, the international conference “God’s Word Questioned” was held in Utrecht. The focus was on the changes in the status of the Bible in the seventeenth century. In that period, innovative historical research and critical textual research called the traditional vision of the Bible into question. The book degenerated from being a guide to salvation inspired by the word of God, to a somewhat loosely-knit compilation of several sources on the history of the Jewish people, at least in the eyes of the intellectual elite. Experts from the Netherlands and abroad fleshed out this central theme at the conference in 21 addresses which led to animated discussions outside the sessions as well. The conference attracted a local and international audience of about 60 visitors. Moreover, on Friday 31 August, in the evening, Anthony Grafton and Jonathan Israel, two leading historians, gave lectures to a general audience of over 200 interested persons in the Tinbergenzaal of the Trippenhuis in Amsterdam. Dirk van Miert and Henk Nellen (Huygens ING) and Piet Steenbakkers and Jetze Touber (Descartes Centre) organised the conference.
On 19 October, in the Scheltema Complex in Leiden, a symposium was held on Kort Amerikaans, the novel that marked Jan Wolkers breakthrough, fifty years ago. There were lectures by Ewoud Kieft, Kees ‘t Hart, Peter Kegel (Huygens ING), Dick Matena and Onno Blom (Huygens ING). A few documentaries were shown and there was a small exhibition of original manuscripts, notes, photos, drawings and paintings by Jan Wolkers. Three books were presented at the close of the day: the anniversary edition of Jan Wolkers’ Kort Amerikaans, Dagboek 1970, and the third volume of the comic book of Kort Amerikaans by Dick Matena. On 29 October, Huygens ING hosted a workshop entitled “CLARIN’s Turn Towards the Literary Text” organised by Els Stronks (Utrecht University) and Karina van Dalen-Oskam (Huygens ING). The morning sessions had lectures by Tim Cole (University of Illinois), Chris Meister (University of Hamburg), Maciej Eder (University of Krakow), en Mike Kestemont (University of Antwerp) and Karina van Dalen-Oskam. In the afternoon, there were discussion groups on (a) infrastructural issues, (b) semantic analyses and tools for semantic analyses, and (c) quantitative approaches. The workshop was well attended and for many it turned out to be a good introduction to several of the key aspects of digital humanities.

Mr Eder gave a workshop on 25-26 October in which he instructed a small group of staff on how to use the software.
Together with Dries Raeymaekers (University of Antwerp), Sebastiaan Derks (Huygens ING) organised an international colloquium entitled “The Key to Power? The Culture of Access in Early Modern Courts, 1400-1700” on 8-9 November. There were 21 excellent contributions on the visualisation, representation and distribution of the rights to court access in both Europe and Asia. The colloquium was part of the ESF PALATIUM Research Networking Programme.
The ninth conference of the European Society for Textual Scholarship (ESTS) took place on 22-24 November in the Trippenhuis and the Bethaniënklooster in Amsterdam, this time organised by Huygens ING. Under the theme “Editing Fundamentals: Historical and Literary Paradigms in Source Editing”, varied editing practices like those within historically oriented academic disciplines like history and literary studies, were critically examined in terms of their differences and similarities. Particularly the constantly changing options for publishing sources in digital format make it necessary to review the thinking behind traditional access to editions and other ways of access. Fifty-five participants from fifteen countries presented a broad spectrum of subjects and insights from the international textual scholarship world. The sharing of thoughts and ideas by the representatives of both new and more traditional approaches, and between literature, history and other disciplines was one of the main gains from this conference.
Prior to the conference referred to above, on 21 November, there were two meetings of the Network for Digital Methods in the Arts and Humanities (NeDiMAH) at Huygens ING in The Hague: an expert meeting on “Expert Meeting on Digital Scholarly Editions” with over thirty participants, and a workshop entitled “Using Large-scale Text Collections for Research: Status and Needs” with twelve participants. Prior to and during the conference, there was an Interedition boot camp at Huygens ING in The Hague and at the Trippenhuis. The COST Action project which closed in 2012 will continue as an informal network in which IT developers from various international universities and institutes develop software for humanities research together, particular for scholarly editing.

Huygens ING provides two online bibliographies for academic research: the Bibliography of Dutch Language and Literature Studies (BNTL) and the Digital Bibliography of Dutch History (DBNG), and two online biographical databases: the Digital Index of Dutch Women (DVN) and the Biographical Dictionary of the Netherlands (BWN).
The web statistics were measured with Google Analytics with the exception of Van Gogh (2011/12) and DBNG (2011); for Huygens and Textualscholarship, the numbers for 2011 only represent the second half of the year.
Huygens ING . 2012 . Annual Report 21
Huygens ING as a publisher Traditionally, the Institute for the History of the Netherlands acted as the publisher for the source publications that emerged from its own work programme. The Rijksgeschiedkundige Publicatiën, Grote Serie and Kleine Serie (RGP GS and KS), of which 263 and 111 volumes respectively were published over the years, constituted the largest part of the publishing programme. In the digital era, the appropriate way in which to provide access to source publications is via websites and databases, and interest in print versions is waning. As stated earlier in this annual report, Huygens ING is working on digitising the volumes of the RGP. In light of the above, Huygens ING has decided to phase out its role of publisher. In 2012, a webshop was set up (www.huygens-b2c.nl) which still makes available hard-copy publications of the last five years. The publishing stocks have been largely liquidated. New source publications will, in principle, only be published in digital format. Source publications are available via printing-on-demand at the webshop insofar as interest in certain publications can be expected or if the editors have received confirmation for a print publication. The webshop will also be used to make available, in a simple way, the institute’s publications that are not suitable for publication by a commercial publisher.

Samenwerking en kennisbenutting
Collaboration and the use of knowledge
Huygens ING performs projects in collaboration with almost every Dutch research university as well as with many archives, libraries and museums. It is also the coordinating institute of the Political History Research School, a partnership of some 20 research universities and institutes. Huygens ING also collaborates on projects with foreign universities, such as the project on the correspondence between scholars in collaboration with the universities of Stanford and Oxford.
In the 2012-2013 academic year, Eric Jorink was attached to the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) as an Andrew W. Mellon visiting scholar. The Courtauld is one of the world’s leading institutes in the field of art history. The Mellon Foundation provides a subsidy for the appointment of a guest researcher from a different discipline every year. The researcher works intensively in that year (with his/her own staff) in the fields of research and education, and is expected to assist in formulating new research questions. Together with Joanna Woodall, a specialist in the field of painting in 16th century Antwerp, Eric Jorink is giving an MA course entitled “Visualising Knowledge in the Early Modern Netherlands”. First Antwerp, and later Amsterdam, were the global centres of a flourishing interaction between the arts and sciences. This little-explored theme will be examined during the fellowship.

The Emergence of the United States in Public Discourse in the Netherlands, 1890-1990’, alle in 2012 gehonoreerd.
Research applications The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) allocated a subsidy for the internationalisation project entitled “Het is niet onopgemerkt gebleven: an International Network Studying the Circulation of Dutch Literature” (CODL). Ton van Kalmthout (Huygens ING), Elke Brems (Brussels University-University College) and Orsolya Réthelyi (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest) are the project coordinators. CODL studies the national and international dissemination and reception of literature from Dutch-speaking areas. The project is also building a network of researchers studying historic Dutch literature to enable them to collaborate internationally in the long term. On 4 December, a first symposium was held in Brussels under the title “De leeuw leeft! Hendrik Conscience in Europees perspectief”. The symposium included lectures by literature experts from Brussels, The Hague, Ghent, Groningen, Leuven, Liège, Paris and Wroclaw. Conferences are scheduled for 2014 and 2015 in Wassenaar, Rome, Budapest and The Hague. Huygens ING is also participating in the Nederlab (NWO-wide) and BiographyNED (Netherlands eScience Centre) projects and in the HORIZON project entitled “E-Humanity Approaches to Reference Cultures: The Emergence of the United States in Public Discourse in the Netherlands, 1890-1990”, funding for all of which was granted in 2012. The Nederlab project intends to make searchable all digitalised Dutch texts from c. 800 to the present, and to develop tools for the analysis of these texts. In BiographyNED, tools (or at minimum, demonstrator tools) are being developed to link people and events within the Biografisch Portaal constructed by Huygens ING. The Horizon project is examining the ways in which the United States has served as a cultural model for the Netherlands over the past hundred years. Funding was granted for the project “Dynamic Drawings in Enhanced Publications” within the programme of the Public-private Center for the Digital Humanities of the KNAW, UvA and the VU. Together with BRILL Academic Publishers and game developer Dylan Nagel, in a short-duration experiment, Huygens ING and DANS are exploring new ways of publishing, archiving and reusing publications that are being used complementarily in print form and via the web: enhanced publications. The NWO division Humanities awarded Jan Burgers a grant to develop a digital instrument for dating and localising Late-Medieval handwritten texts, in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen. The expectation is that this project will deliver software that is capable of automatically applying the ‘palaeographic yardstick’ tool. The NWO awarded to Esther van Gelder a Rubicon grant for her research project entitled “Selling the Nation’s Nature: Jan Christiaan Sepp’s Publishing Projects on the Flora and Fauna of the Netherlands (1762-1811)”. Dr. Van Gelder will perform most of her research within the Huygens ING History of Science research group.

28 Jaarverslag . 2012 . Huygens ING
Finances and staff The prudent financial policy implemented when Huygens ING was established in 2011 was continued in 2012. Restraint was exercised in replacing personnel who were absent due to illness, and investment in new equipment and furniture was restricted to what was absolutely essential. The aim was an operating result of k€ 80 but ultimately the result was k€ 315. The reason for this was a large number of windfalls, mainly one-off in nature, including the revenues from the liquidation of the publishing stocks. Staff members under temporary contract who departed were able to find work relatively quickly so that the burden of paying benefits was low. This meant that the general reserve at the end of 2012 was € 676 and now meets the KNAW requirement to all intents and purposes. This buffer will be desperately needed in the years ahead due to worsening financial prospects.

Achmea Vitale performed a Risk Inventory & Evaluation (RI&E) at the end of 2011. Based on the results, a multi-year occupational health and safety plan was drawn up which was approved by the subcommittee of the Works Council. Recruiting IT staff proved to be a big problem. Due to the large number of projects acquired, including various CLARIN projects, Huygens ING needed additional programmers/developers. It is proving difficult to fill vacancies for both temporary and permanent positions.

The table below shows the staffing level at the end of 2012. One permanent staff member left employment in 2012 due to retirement, and several temporary contracts ended. This was more than compensated for by the intake of PhD candidates and temporary research-support staff for the new, externally funded projects. The bottom line is that the staff grew in size by 7.7 FTEs.
