Pembaca yang budiman,
Dear readers,
You would have heard the saying “tuntutlah ilmu sejak dari ayunan sampai ke liang lahat” (pursuing knowledge from cradle to grave). This is a saying encouraging people to keep learning, anything useful, for as long as one is alive.
Kini kita mengenal konsep pendidikan seumur hidup atau life-long education. “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.
We now have the concept of lifelong education. This does not necessarily mean going to school for the rest of our lives to pursue in-class learning, which is specialized; it means learning throughout our lives, which is holistic in nature. Holistic here implies shaping a person towards an idealistic life. In other words, learning is about giving meaning to life. A person who does not learn loses a sense of life, or at least, wastes life as a human being. Nature is teacher, as Minang people say. Various psychological studies demonstrate that those who keep learning in life have a champion mentality. A learner is competitive, does not give up and can clearly picture the goal that is to be pursued. The CEOs of large companies usually have these characteristics. The main report for this edition of Halo Vale discusses lifelong education, presented to you in a popular style that is easy to read. It includes practical tips for those of you thinking of going back to study while continuing to work. “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young,” Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, once said. As always, we present you with various events that have taken place around the company, such as the negotiations of the 15th Collective Labor Agreement (PKB), the familiarization of PT Asuransi Jiwasraya’s savings plan program, and the construction of Chromium management facilities. Our feature pieces include articles on Jonas Kadoena, a member of PT Vale’s geological exploration team; the Vale Ontel Community; and health information on diabetes. Enjoy.
Selamat membaca.

Pasti Halo Vale makin informatif. B a so Haris [O fficer Com m un i t y Relat i on s] Terima kasih atas masukan Anda yang sangat menarik. Na rni [Ad min O fficer S ec uri t y System & S er v i ces] Konsep sampul Halo Vale memang dibuat santai, simbolik, sekaligus atraktif dan komunikatif. Terima kasih atas masukan Anda. DISTRIBUSI TIDAK MERATA Di divisi saya, Revegetasi, jarang sekali menerima Halo Vale. Mungkin karena lokasi kami jauh dari jangkauan. Saya rasa perlu dipikirkan kembali mekanisme distribusi majalah dan produk-produk lain agar semua karyawan mendapat informasi yang sama. Erl in Harr y [Revegetati on Coord i n ator] Terima kasih atas informasi Anda yang sangat berguna. He ri Hamid [ Fire Emerg en c y S er v i ces] Terima kasih atas masukan Anda yang sangat berarti bagi kami.
INFORMATION FROM OTHER AREAS I think the articles in Halo Vale are very good and so are the visuals. It would be even better if the news came not just from Sorowako but from PT Vale’s other areas of operations, which include Central Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi. Employees working in Sorowako also need information on the company’s activities in other areas. There is also room for columns expressing the views of management, such as what management thinks of the Bahodopi project. This would make Halo Vale more informative. B a s o H a r i s [O f f i c e r Co m m u n i t y Re l at i o n s ] Thank you for the very interesting feedback. The editorial team at Halo Vale always accepts articles or information from employees, including those working on special projects in areas outside Sorowako. ATTRACTIVE COVER I love looking at Halo Vale’s covers. They are nice, colorful, relaxing and easy to understand. It may be good, too, if Halo Vale had illustrations, such as comics. We would be more encouraged to read if the magazine had many entertaining articles. N a r n i [Adm i n O f f i c e r S e c u r i t y Sys te m & S e r vi c e s ] Halo Vale’s covers are intentionally designed to be relaxing, symbolic and also attractive and communicative. Thank you for your feedback. UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION My division, Revegetation, receives Halo Vale very seldomly; perhaps because our location is quite remote. I think it is necessary to rethink the mechanism for distributing magazines and other products to ensure all employees receive the same information. E r l i n H a r r y [Reve ge t at i o n Co o rdi n ato r ] Thank you for your valuable information. We will try to improve the distribution system because the target of Halo Vale is all employees. We also receive reports when departments/divisions do not, or seldom, receive copies of Halo Vale. BROADENING HORIZONS I was very keen on reading Halo Vale’s articles on fluctuating nickel prices. I think it has been the best theme so far. As an employee, it has made me understand a lot about how nickel prices can drop. If possible, please include informative articles like these in future editions. He r i H a m i d [Fi re E m e rge n c y S e r vi c e s ] Thank you for your very valuable input. It is true that the topics of Halo Vale’s main reports are not always “serious” subjects such as nickel price fluctuations; sometimes we present light hearted themes, like hobbies or self-development matters, which are nonetheless inspiring to employees. By varying the theme of our main report, we hope readers will not be bored but continue to broaden their horizon.

When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes - Ketika saya memiliki uang sedikit, saya beli buku. “Buat apa sekolah lagi?

Jujur saya sempat down ketika tesis. Soalnya ngerjainnya sendiri tidak seperti penugasan kelompok seperti di awal-awal kuliah,” ujar Saldy tersenyum.
Tuntutan Profesi Christine Ken Widati, Technical Nurse Management Advisor, punya alasan sama.
Process and Technology.

Relentless in the Pursuit of Education Investment requiring energy, commitment and extra budget: this is the story of those who have decided to work while studying. Everyone has a different perception of education. Some are quite happy with the education they have achieved, but many others endeavor to go further. There are many reasons for this. Those who are satisfied with their education, especially if they are in the workforce, may think they have learnt enough to support their job. Those who are not yet satisfied may see education as continuously developing, and feel they need to refresh their knowledge; or they consider further education as an investment for improving their professionalism. What do you think? If you are interested in furthering your education, you must understand it is not as simple as it seems. There are many things you need to prepare: funds, time, energy and motivation, or the drive itself. You must also be prepared to make sacrifices. In the words of the Dutch humanist philosopher, Erasmus, workers who work while studying live to the following motto: “When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.” Take the story of Lili Nuria Lubis, Acting Senior Coordinator Environment Compliance & Reporting EHS, for example. Lili’s intention to pursue an S2 (master’s) degree was initially opposed by her parents. “Why do you need to go back to school? You’ve already got a job, haven’t you?” they had told Lili.
In spite of their opposition, Lili was determined to enroll in the Sorowako class of Universitas Hasanuddin’s Master of Management course (MM-Unhas) in mid 2009. Although the field of study seemed somewhat unrelated to her background as a science graduate, Lili felt that investing in education would benefit her in future. The class itself was an initiative of several employees of PT Vale who independently funded their studies. “I think I have been able to apply my management skills, which have assisted me in my current job. If the learning can improve my career then I consider it a bonus,” said Lili, who graduated third best out of her class of 32. It’s a different story for Saldy Fidyawan, Acting Field Manager Mine Operation Sorowako. The motivation to return to university came from his father. “He was the one who inspired me. He said, ‘I only have an S1 degree; you must have better education than that’,” the mining engineering graduate from Universitas Trisakti, Jakarta said, quoting his father. Saldy, who was Lili’s classmate, said master’s degree studies provide more insight and analytical skills as students were much more involved in discussions. “Maybe if I were a junior engineer, I would not find the knowledge very useful. But now as I supervise 80 mining operators the human resources management skills I have learnt allow me to work with better planning, better theoretical understanding, and taking greater care of work colleagues,” he said. Deborah Pongtinamba, Supervisor Admin Maintenance, has a similar experience. She extended her accounting qualifications from a D3 diploma to an S1 degree by enrolling in an extension program held by UKI Paulus in Makassar. “Besides improving my education, the motivation to return to studies was to gain knowledge that would allow me to support my current job,” she said.

COVER STORY
Unlike Lili and Saldy, Deborah must travel to Makassar for her studies. “In the first few semesters, I went to Makassar every weekend to participate in the classroom. Most of the time I took the bus, but if there were exams, I would fly. It was very tiring, but it was enjoyable and I was enthusiastic, particularly as many work colleagues supported me,” she said. The energy draining activity of working while studying as experienced by Deborah was also felt by Saldy. “It was particularly difficult during the supervisory period of my thesis, when I had to travel irregularly between Sorowako and Makassar. I admit I felt very low during this period because I had to complete the task individually; it was not a group task such as the ones we did at the beginning of the studies,” Saldy said with a smile.
Demands of the Profession Christine Ken Widati, Technical Nurse Management Advisor, had similar reasons. Being in a profession that involves contact with many people and seeing the rapid progress of health sciences encouraged Suster Ken, as she is more familiarly known, to upgrade her skills. “Returning to study, I believe, is a demand of our profession, particularly as patients these days are very smart. If we (nurses) are not smarter, things could get difficult,” said the woman who has been a nurse at Inco Hospital since 1992.
Upon hearing that a colleague had finished university after studying with a UVRI partner class in late 2010 at an affordable cost, Denis became interested. His activities with the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) and a certain political party encouraged Denis to undertake studies at UVRI’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. “The studies greatly support the development of my potential. After my work as a chemical analyst, I go into the community and become involved in organizations. Studying social and political sciences becomes a necessity,” Denis said. Along with about 20 PT Vale employees and 20 other students with a civil service background, Denis participates in partner classes every Saturday and Sunday in Sorowako using his own funds. “The greatest challenge is time management. I work shifts, so sometimes I have to work on weekends. I have to be able to divide my time between work, study and resting at home,” said Denis who lives in Wasuponda with his family. Denis completed his Community Service component at Tabarano Village and is currently gathering material for his thesis. If all goes well, he will graduate and earn his bachelor’s degree next year.
Lili Nuria Lubis
Ken, who initially held a D3 diploma in nursing, decided to pursue an S1 degree in Community Health at Universitas Veteran (UVRI), Makassar. After graduating a year later, in 2010, she pursued an S1 degree in nursing at Universitas Stella Maris, Makassar. The two further studies undertaken by Ken were held in Sorowako as an initiative of the nurses at Inco Hospital in cooperation with the two universities. Then there is the story of Denis Dayan Kadama, an employee at the Laboratory and Sample House, Process and Technology Department. When Denis started working at PT Vale in November 2000, Denis and most of his colleagues had just graduated from the School of Chemical Analysts (SMAK), Makassar. Denis, whose father had died when he was in junior highschool, could not go to university but had to work instead. “But I have always wanted to go. I had an overwhelming desire to go to university,” Denis said.
Saldy Fidyawan
In 2008, Denis started studying at the Environmental Health Department of Universitas Veteran RI (UVRI) Makassar’s Faculty of Community Health. Studying on weekends, Denis and his friends used from the workers union secretariat’s room. “But I didn’t finish my studies; I quit in the second semester because it cost too much,” Denis said. But his enthusiasm for pursuing education was not dampened.

There is Sorrow, and Plenty of Joy
Time Management
According to career coach Yuni Lasti Faulinda from Experd consultancy, employees who decide to work and study need extra preparation because they normally choose evening and weekend classes. “It needs to be considered whether the employee will still have energy, because they study at night but are still required to have good stamina for work the following morning,” said Faulinda.
From the examples above, does working while studying bring more joy or sorrow? Everyone agrees there is more joy. “Studying for an S2 degree is more enjoyable and lively. The participants and teaching staff have lots of discussions and interactions,” Saldy said.
In reality, the challenges are not that simple. Hobbies that would have refreshed off-duty employees are frequently replaced by classes. “Unfortunately, I must sacrifice my cycling activity and getting together with friends,” Lili said. Another thing Lili must sacrifice is her love of travel. “My travelling budget has been reduced to pay university fees,” Lili said with a laugh. Saldy has had to do a similar thing with his hobby of photography and his fondness for meeting up with the community of photographers. “We usually pursue photo objects on weekends which is when I have to study so I am missed by my colleagues,” Saldy said with a chuckle.

Eko Nugroho, GM of HR Development and a participant at the Sorowako class of MM Unhas, agrees. “Because we work at the same place and we know each other, participants tend to encourage and help each other. For instance, we help colleagues who are at their final stages with finding references from scientific papers or calculate the results of their research,” said Eko. It turns out the high motivation to study also inspires work colleagues and family members. This was experienced by Suster Ken. “Despite my old age, it turns out my passion for studying has become an inspiration for other nurses to study again and improve their competence. This is especially true of nurses who were previously reluctant to do this, but then decided to return to studies. I have also motivated my youngest child to pursue an S2 degree,” said Ken, who is also a candidate for master assessor at PT Vale’s Professional Certification Agency (LSP). For Denis Dayan Kadama, studies have inspired him to establish youth organizations. Education, according to Denis, is a form of investment. Despite being intangible, education makes a person’s competence measureable and enables him or her to have a better bargaining position. “The mindset, organizational ethics, strategic thinking skills, and leadership are all sharpened through studying. I am sure this knowledge will support my career and benefit my life in future,” said Denis. He is also convinced that an employee’s education has a positive impact on a company’s performance. However, Eko said, the main focus of employees who decide to return to university should be time management. “This means handling work properly while ensuring studies run smoothly. Students are required to do things like read literature and conduct research,” said Eko. So, does that make you want to go back to university? []

The Pearl of Treasure Island. Intinya, cuma get up from your chair,” ujar dia.

“Intinya belajar tanpa henti.” []

Seeking Knowledge to Share From doing a hobby and experiencing life, they self-develop and share. Not many people can turn their interests and experiences into motivation for pursuing knowledge. These are the stories of knowledge seekers in pursuit of self-development and the desire to share with others.
I Putu Adi Artana, Senior IT Business Partner His admiration for celestial bodies from a young age encouraged Putu Adi, as he is familiarly called, to study photography. In senior high school (SMU), Putu managed to buy a pocket camera with his pocket money. “At the time it cost IDR99,000 and I got two rolls of film as a bonus,” reminisced Putu, who was born in Bali on 3 October 1982. Putu bought the camera because he wanted to photograph the Hale-Bopp comet that appeared in 1997. He discovered it was not easy to photograph celestial bodies with his camera. He used roll after roll of film, but the result was always a dark sheet of photo paper. “It turns out that photographing dark objects is not as easy as shooting objects in daylight,” he said. But that experience did not discourage Putu. His interest in photography and astronomy was reignited when he taught himself to use Digital SLR cameras that started entering the market in 2008. Equipped with curiosity and trial and error, Putu experimented with his camera and used photography techniques such as by using the strobist method, models, underwater and architectural photography and humanist objects. His works have been collected in digital format and displayed on the website www.fotosintesa. com. “This has been one of my activities since 2009, but it is moving very slowly. I upload at least one article a month, and now have 100 articles,” he said. The more Putu studied photography, the more curious he became, particularly when the techniques with which he experimented had not yet brought him closer to the objects of his admiration: celestial bodies. Finally Putu studied night and landscape photography. Since 2012, Putu has learnt about timelapse videography (taking a photo by capturing an object multiple times to create a sense of movement). “Timelapse, I think, is a photographic technique that is closest to astronomy. We can see the Earth and other celestial bodies move,” said Putu, who has created a timelapse video on Sorowako titled “The Pearl of Treasure Island”.

From his interest in the technique, Putu came to have big dreams of producing a timelapse video showcasing the beauty of Indonesia. To achieve this, he is cooperating and sharing his skills and knowledge with members of photography clubs in several cities across Indonesia. Regarding the technique, Putu has been asked to share his skills with colleagues at the Sorowako Photography Society (SPS). Presently he is preparing a book themed “100 Lightning Photos from Indonesia” which he hopes to release this year. Asked how many photography techniques he wanted to master, Putu simply replied: “Everyone can learn photography quickly. The main thing is to get up from your chair.” Besides, Putu considers photography to be more than just a hobby. “Photography makes me appreciate things. Taking pictures of nature, for example, makes me aware of God’s greatness. It makes me more sensitive, and photography itself is full of surprises. That is what always makes me curious,” said Putu, who idolizes English physicist Isaac Newton.

Ni Ketut Ari Rustadewi, Wawondula Clinic Coordinator, Lactation Counselor As a nurse, dealing with health issues is part of Sister Ari’s daily work. She is accustomed to handling patients with all sorts of complaints and giving them medical care. Who would think then that Ari would have trouble holding her own baby after giving birth for the first time seven years ago? Her knowledge on lactation was minimal and her immediate environment was unsupportive. She had trouble breastfeeding and ended up stopping for a while. That is when she decided to find information on breastfeeding: she first joined a mailing list of parents, medical practitioners and health observers. Then Ari became inspired to assist pregnant women and new mothers, to enable them to breastfeed successfully. “With the knowledge I had, I gave advice to mothers and would-be mothers. I went around quietly. For example, I might meet a pregnant woman in the market. I’d take her aside then chat with her,” Ari said. Gradually, Ari became aware that the advice she was giving came from a personal perspective; she was not listening or showing understanding of the person to whom she was talking. Through her determination to help other mothers and learn more about breastfeeding, Ari decided to become a lactation counselor. She joined a 40-hour WHO-UNICEF standard Lactation Counseling Training module, which was a prerequisite for being a counselor. She flew herself to Jakarta and joined the 5-day training course at a private hospital. She used her own money and even sacrificed five days of annual leave for this. “Although I’m a nurse, my job has
no direct correlation with being a lactation counselor. This comes purely out of my own desire to develop myself,” Ari said. “The most important thing about the training is that I develop listening skills. Anyone can give advice, but not everyone is capable of listening to others’ complaints,” she added. After the training and subsequent training of trainers (ToT), Ari is now able to be a presenter at breastfeeding education classes. The training has also encouraged Ari along with several female colleagues who share a concern for the quality of future generations to fight for nursing rooms at PT Vale and to conduct breastfeeding early initiations at Inco Hospital. Both have been achieved. Ari did not stop at being a clinic coordinator and lactation counselor. She felt she still had more to offer. In the field of academia, Ari is now enrolled in a professional nursing program, which is an extension of the S1-degree Nursing Science. She also attended a symposium on emergency services at Hospital Kuala Lumpur last May again, using her own funds. “I get very sad when people don’t trust our hospitals, but it is also a source of motivation for me. If we want to improve services and the public’s trust, well, we have to do some self-actualization and develop ourselves,” said Ari, who joined PT Vale in March 2005. “In life, there are three things I wish for: to be a good wife and mother; to continue promoting breastfeeding; and to provide the best medical care,” Ari said. To achieve these, she is prepared to keep learning.

Yuni Fitriyani Natsir, designer for WCIP project, PT Maju Jaya Childhood interests and fond memories carried through to adulthood: this is what Yuni has experienced. After every trip out of town, her father would bring home crayons and color pencils as a present for her. A skilled handyman building furniture like cupboards, bookshelves and shoe racks Yuni’s father was an important figure in her life. Her mother, in the meantime, was always making clothes for her. All of this shaped Yuni’s interests well into adulthood. Painting and craft have always been Yuni’s hobbies. The hobbies have allowed her to meet many different people, attend training to upgrade her skills, and share her love with those around her. Yuni has studied painting at MakassART Gallery with Mike Turusy and clay artist Zaenal Beta. She is also involved in the Indonesia’s Sketcher community, where she is coordinator for Makassar and surrounds. “I attended a workshop held by Galeri Nasional Indonesia in 2011 and whenever I am on leave, I take time to visit art exhibitions,” said Yuni, who went to the exhibition of contemporary artist Eko Nugroho in Yogyakarta. Yuni has also exhibited her paintings and sketches. She joined “Sorowako in Pictures 2” painting exhibition in 2009 and “Female Painters” and “5 Female Painters” exhibitions in Makassar in 2010. In the same year, the mother of one participated in “MakassART Moment” and “Makassar Artists Show” sketch exhibitions.
Yuni Fitriyani Natsir together with children who attend her weekend Painting Club at her house.
Indeed it would have been a shame if her interests and skills were left unshared. When she joined the Sorowako Painting Club in 2009, Yuni thought of sharing her skills. “At the time I was still working for the Karebbe plant project so I seldom attended the painting lessons held in Sorowako. I then set up my own workshop in Malili and routinely painted with my friends who shared my living quarters.” Experiencing the fun of painting together encouraged Yuni to open a fortnightly painting workshop for children. “Creating together is motivating; and there should be a place or a community that ensures the spirit of creativity,” said the Architectural Engineering graduate from UNHAS. Yuni was particularly proud when two of the children attending her workshop made it to an exhibition held by Galeri Nasional in Jakarta in June 2013. Besides painting, Yuni is also interested in craft. “When I need a pencil case, I prefer to sew my own using leftover material from my mother. There is great satisfaction when I can use my own creations.” With the abundance of craft tutorials found in books and the Internet, Yuni is finding it easy to practice her crafting skills. She hosts crafting sessions once a month for children and adults who share her interest. “There are many newcomers to Sorowako who don’t know what to do on the weekends; they are already tired of traveling around. A few of them who enjoyed craft then asked me to join them to set up craft classes,” said Yuni, who founded the Sorowako Weekend (SoAP) community. Together, they host knitting, crocheting and paper recycling classes. At every opportunity, Yuni invites an experienced practitioner. “The point is to learn continuously.” []

Company Support for “Sorowako University Classes” The management’s guide to facilitation determined by employees’ needs and initiatives. This is an interesting statement by Yuni Lasti Faulinda, a career coach at Experd consultancy. She said that a forwardlooking company would always support an employee’s decision to upgrade their education because this would benefit the company. What kind of support does PT Vale give employees who want to further their education? According to Industrial Relations Manager Hasan Said, the company does not have allowances for individuals. However, the company can lend its support if classes are held in Sorowako. This is evident in the 15th Collective Labor Agreement (for the 2012-2014 period), subject to several prerequisites. “The initiative to have university classes must come from employees and the classes must be held in Sorowako. Those are the only prerequisites,” Hasan said. Once this requirement has been achieved, Hasan added, the company would provide support in the form of logistics (accommodation and food) for a maximum of two teaching staff per weekend; also, plane tickets are charged at employee rates. “The company also provides lecture halls, which are available outside work hours. Usually the training halls in HRPD are used. Finally, we provide administrative support to assist the study process in Sorowako,” added Hasan. What about employees outside Sorowako? “We haven’t had to consider that. Currently we follow the needs or initiatives of employees. If there is anyone from Jakarta then that will be organized on an individual basis,” Hasan added. Proposals to hold “Sorowako Classes” can be made by employees to the company through HRPD (Human Resources & People Development). HRPD then explores campuses and the possibility of holding classes in Sorowako.

So far, according to GM HR & People Development, Eko Nugroho, the company has facilitated four classes, with participants coming from various departments and professions. A class was set up for the Management of Education master’s degree program for YPS teachers. The activity took place in 2011 and was held in conjunction with Universitas Negeri Makassar. “Class participants also included non-YPS teachers. Then there was the S1 program for Universitas Hasanuddin’s Industrial Engineering, which had about 20 participants, all of whom were graduates of ATS,” Eko added. There is also the S1 Nursing program requested by Inco Hospital nurses, which was set up in conjunction with Stella Maris Makassar and UKI Paulus Makassar.

COVER STORY
Learners with a Champion Mentality Exploring the psychology of keen pursuers of new horizons. They come home tired from work but still want to study: what goes on in the head of people like that? Psychological analyses have found that people who constantly want to learn throughout their lives are people with the mentality of a champion. What is the explanation for this? In real life, competitiveness is an important factor that one must have. The CEOs of large companies usually carry this attribute. In this case, the motivation to keep learning is their driving force. Without competitiveness, one will never be able to make a high achievement. A person’s motivation will usually increase if he or she has the need to engage in an activity. For example, a person will try very hard to travel to a place if he or she feels the need to be in that place going on the hajj pilgrimage, for instance. GM HR & People Development Eko Nugroho said that the desire to further one’s education is closely related to personality type. “This is particularly true in terms of career planning and competence. These are very personal things, and not everyone feels the same way about those needs. Some people consider them a priority, others feel the time is not quite right yet,” Eko said. In fact, Eko added, the knowledge gained from studies can help employees accomplish their work in a more conceptualized, systematic and detailed manner. “For example, an employee who is enrolled in a Master of Management program specializing in human resources will understand issues surrounding recruitment processes and selection, package competency, performance, etc.,” Eko added. In terms of psychology, learners have a non-submissive or nevergive-up attitude, and set targets that require determination to be achieved. Without clear goals, a learner will have no focus a learner is usually capable of clearly and firmly imagining the goal that must be achieved. The ability to imagine this target is known as visualization.
Take for example a student whose chosen field of study matches his or her interest as well as a desire to work in that field, of course. A student may choose the faculty of geological engineering and imagine himself or herself to one day become an engineer. The great desire to become a geologist will give the student motivation to study. But if the student later imagines how difficult a geologist’s life might be working in remote, quiet places that motivation might diminish, and even disappear. Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli emphasized the importance of volition (or will) to achieve the ideal self. He explained that a person with a champion’s mentality will direct her or his actions towards the ideal self. The ideal self is a psychological concept coined by several psychological experts. Humanist Carl Rogers, for example, says an individual is determined by the real self and the ideal self. The real self is an individual’s condition at present; the ideal self is the condition that she or he wishes to see happen. The ideal self is an important aspect in a learner and directs the learner’s actions towards goals and how to achieve them. Without the ideal self, a person will lose his or her target behavior, limiting his or her participation in the workforce or studies as nothing more than routine activities. Society often uses the word “true” to describe the concept of the ideal self, and that truthfulness is one’s original form from within oneself, so it is fixed and internalized. Because of this, the coaching programs of various fields often pair up the concept of the ideal self with goal setting. If an athlete wants to be a champion, for instance, then the goal is to win the main trophy or the gold medal. If an athlete has a champion ideal self, then the athlete will prioritize actions towards being a winner, even though she or he may not end up winning the trophy or gold medal. []

Kisah Para Pembelajar Meraih Mimpi Inspirasi dari kisah empat tokoh. dok.infobanknews.com
Chairul Tanjung

Lalu De Stille Kraacht (Kekuatan Gaib) karya Louis Coperus. Kemudian karya Van Eeden yang bermutu tinggi, karya Augusta de Witt yang sedang-sedang saja, roman feminis karya Nyonya Goekoop de-Jong Van Beek, dan sebuah roman antiperang karangan Berta Von Suttner, Die Waffen Nieder (Letakkan Senjata). Semuanya berbahasa Belanda.

The Story of Learners Pursuing Their Dreams Inspiration from the story of four characters. Chairul Tanjung The road to success for people like Chairul Tanjung, a “child of the village”, is not an easy one. The poverty he has experienced since childhood has given him many lessons in life. For people like him, books are not the only source of knowledge. Experience, observations, newspapers, magazines and anything that teaches how to live one’s life can be a source of knowledge. Now, at the age of 51, Chairul Tanjung is ranked 937 in Forbes magazine’s 2010 list of the world’s richest people, with a total wealth of $1 billion. In 2011, Chairul Tanjung, through CT Corp (previously Para Group) ranked 11th with a total wealth of $2.1 billion.

Chairul is a type of person who never tires of learning, particularly in the field of business. This is the typical character of a learning being. Learning beings are individuals who make the pursuit of knowledge one of life’s necessities; and because learning has become a necessity, they will always be thirsty for it.
RA Kartini RA Kartini is a classic example of an Indonesian learning being. A fighter for women’s emancipation, she was the type of person with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Kartini read the Semarang newspaper De Locomotief edited by Pieter Brooshooft and subscribed to Leestrommel magazine sets from bookshops these included some highbrow cultural and scientific publications as well as Dutch women’s magazine De Hollandsche Lelie. Kartini’s desire to continue her studies specifically in Europe were expressed in her letters. Some of her pen-friends supported her and tried to make her dreams come true. When in the end she decided to let go of her dreams, her pen-friends were disappointed. Plans to study in the Netherlands were diverted to Batavia after Kartini took advice from her best friend, Mrs. Abendanon, who convinced her that it would have been best for Kartini and her younger sister, Rukmini.
In mid-1903, at the age of 24, Kartini’s plans of studying to become a teacher were again abandoned. In a letter to Mrs. Abendanon, Kartini said she had no intention of furthering her education because she was getting married. “…This is short and brief, that I no longer want to use that opportunity, because I am about to be married…” At the time, the Dutch ministry of education had in fact given the opportunity for Kartini and Rukmini to study in Batavia.

Tentunya akan ada take and give.

Dukungan Finansial. Bukan hanya biaya pendidikan, Anda juga perlu menyiapkan biaya lain jika Anda kuliah atas biaya sendiri, seperti untuk membeli buku-buku. Jangan sampai kuliah Anda putus di tengah jalan gara-gara anggaran tak mencukupi. Ukur dulu kemampuan, tapi jangan pernah merasa rugi. Yakinlah bahwa investasi Anda akan kembali. Siap Belajar. []

Preparing Mentally and Financially Six things you need to prepare. Imagine that you have just spent the day completing a pile of work. Now, when you could be relaxing at home, you are instead dealing with books. You must ward off sleepiness and laziness, and have less time with your family. If you are troubled by this image, forget any desire you may have to return to studying. But if you are prepared to take on a challenge, here are some tips that will help you decide if it is the thing for you. Furthering your education, after all, can be a long-term investment for your career. But if you are finding it hard to divide your time, then a long-distance course may be an option. Distance learning is helpful because you can work at your own pace without being bound by specific time constraints. Learning does not need to take over your entire life. Mental readiness. Ask yourself whether you have a strong desire to respond to future challenges. If you are sure about this, continue! Working and studying are both taxing to your time, energy and mind. If your mental preparation is inadequate, there is a good chance you will quit your studies midway. Learn to be open to other people’s arguments, engage in healthy competition, sharing and cooperating. Seek support from your family and your environment. Having the support of family is crucial. It is easy to imagine that if you insist on studying without your wife’s or husband’s approval, there will be dire consequences for the process of your studies. The environment from which you should seek support includes friends and even your superiors. Let them know your plans to go back to studying. Some companies are happy

when employees wish to further their education because they will have better quality human resources. Of course there will be some take and give. Some companies even encourage employees to study overseas, such as PT Pelindo II, under the leadership of Richard Joost Lino. Financial support. This is not limited to tuition; you must also prepare for other costs, such as book purchases, if you are to use your own funds. Avoid having to drop out due to lack of funds. Measure your affordability, but never consider it a loss. Be confident that you will have a return on your investment. Prepare to learn. If you have decided to return to university, prepare yourself for some relearning. For example, if you chose business studies, increase your knowledge of business and other fields related to business as early as possible. Don’t wait until you have started your course. Divide your time wisely. Start learning to divide your time. It is important that you get into the habit of accomplishing tasks in small portions at a time and tackling them as soon as possible. Imagine, for example, that you may have to travel out of town for work, or take your sick child to the hospital. Also get into the habit of reading your books on the way to work or finding a specific time for studying. Holidays can also be used to finish study tasks. The bottom line is: use your time as effectively as possible. Refresh. Although your days are packed with study timetables and work commitments, try not to disregard time for resting. Refreshing yourself will divert your attention away from tedious, routine activities and allow your brain to relax for a while. This is a very effective way to maintain your motivation and spirit. []

Major Shut Down Q2-2013
The project to routinely maintain equipment in the processing factory, known as “Major Shut down”, for the second quarter of 2013 was completed in mid-July. Taking about a month (25 June to 15 July 2013), the project was targeted at five sectors: Furnace 4, Kiln 5, Dryer 2, Converter 2, and TC (Transfer Car) 5. Major Shut Down Q2 Project Manager Andrie Kurniawan said it was worth mentioning the excellent time of furnace repairs this time, which was the fastest it has been. “The target was 12 days but it was completed in 10.1 days,” said Andrie. This was in spite of several challenges faced by the Major Shut Down team; one of them being the high rainfall at the time. “This was most significantly felt in Dryer 2 sector, which had no canopy. When it rained hard, the team had to stop. In fact, the stop once lasted a whole shift,” added Shut Down Coordinator Michael Piris.

Five sectors targeted for shut down this time were roof repairs at Furnace 4; reline repairs at Kiln 5; rail, rail base, clamp and concrete replacements at TC 5; bull gear and pinion gear replacements at Dryer 2; and total relining at Converter 2. “Roof repairs at Furnace 4 were done because the previous roof was worn out. The roof should be 9 inches thick but after two years of wear, it is down to 4 inches, so it had to be replaced. If used in its worn-out state, it would break easily which may significantly affect product in future,” said Andrie. At the Kiln, the castable used for calcination was replaced. “Castable material has a life span, so it needs to be replaced to ensure the quality of calcines,” Andrie said.
Major Shut Down Q2 involved more than 600 workers affiliated with local and national contractors. National contractors from Thiess worked on the converter and kiln, while those from Truba dealt with the dryer and furnace. Local contractors involved in the shut down came from two local companies: Karya Serindo and Welani Jaya. The project which was driven by Maintenance Planning also involved Engineering, Plant Maintenance and PPE divisions. In terms of work safety, the project’s coordinator regularly briefed workers at Toolbox Meetings conducted prior to on-field work, reminding them about the importance of working safely. []

36
H a l o Va l e I Edis i Ok to ber 2013
K INER J A
“Sebelum menggunakan SPLC, power kerap swing up dan swing down.
SPLC, the Power Stabilizer of Furnace 2 Implementing an SPLC to improve furnace performance. Furnace 2, the “kitchen” for nickel processing, is an important component of PT Vale’s production. Its performance depends heavily on the electricity supplied by Larona, Balambano and Karebbe hydropower plants. In this case, the stability of the energy used for smelting is a barometer of this electric kiln’s performance. To achieve the best possible performance, PT Vale has installed an SPLC (Smart Predictive Line Controller) designed to maintain Furnace 2’s power at a stable capacity of 90 MW. The presence of the SPLC at Furnace 2 is very important to ensure a smoother smelting process and it also allows the furnace to operate at a higher capacity level, which may prove useful for future production. From 1998 to the first quarter of 2012, Furnace 2 was equipped with an automation system combined with mechanical control, with electro hydraulics as the main power control. As a result, the power supplied to Furnace 2 had not been very stable, although it was sufficient to meet production demand at the time. Power fluctuations of the smelting set point could reach +/- 20 MW. This challenge was overcome in mid-2012 when the SPLC was implemented at Furnace 2. The equipment, which replaces mechanically-based functions with electricitybased functions, is aimed at controlling and stabilizing the utilization of energy from the processing factory’s energy sources (hydropower and thermal) to Furnace 2 in particular. According to Wahyudi, who is both a Senior Instrument Engineer and Instrument and Control Representative, using an SPLC prevents frequent power fluctuations, which had been the main problem affecting the furnace. “Before using the SPLC, there were frequent up and down power swings. This often resulted in blackouts, as hydropower plants were
38
H a l o Va l e I Edis i Ok to ber 2013
unable to respond to increases in electrical current activity. When a blackout occurs, production is significantly affected and the resulting losses are great,” Wahyudi said. The SPLC allows a better power average to be sent to Furnace 2. Prior to that, fluctuations were recorded at +/- 20 MW. “By using the SPLC, power fluctuations can be reduced to just 1-2 MW. In terms of operations, power bandwidth settings can be reduced, allowing the energy to be used by other furnaces,” Wahyudi added. The ability of the SPLC to stabilize power means hydropower plants can operate more consistently. This increases the life time of plants’ energy- and water discharge-controlling equipment. “Because of the control unit, the amount of water discharged for the required level of power can be reduced,” Wahyudi said. Currently only 1 of 4 furnaces at PT Vale uses an SPLC. The idea to use SPLCs first emerged in 2006. Implementation of the $19 million project was delayed due to financial reasons. The project then picked up again in 2010.
P ERFOR MANC E
The development of the SPLC was driven by the Engineering and MSE Department, and involved several consultants as well as local and overseas contractors. The main component was supplied and engineered by Hatch Canada and Siemens Germany, while the automation involved simultaneously combining two controller platforms: Allen Bradley Controller and Siemens TDC (Technology Driver Controller).
The implementation of SPLC at Furnace 2 makes PT Vale the world’s largest mining and 90 MW-capacity nickel processing company using SPLC, ahead of Gerdau 85 MW in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. []
“The process of managing the system was led by project manager M. Rifai, along with team members Rustam Saleh, Ery Purnomo Raharjo, Anton Masnur, M. Padli, and myself. We faced many challenges in terms of finances, control strategies, social issues and a tight schedule caused by the tie-in with the Furnace 2 Rebuild project,” Wahyudi added.

Pada akhir Mei silam, fastmarkets.com, situs ekonomi yang menjadi salah satu referensi bisnis dunia, merilis analisis pasar nikel 2013 yang cukup mengejutkan. Ada tiga hal yang disebutkan. Pertama, stok nikel dunia dipastikan mengalami oversupply sebesar 93.800 ton.

Management and Workers Union Meeting Seeking solutions in the midst of a sluggish market as production costs rise 23 percent in the last two years. At the end of May, fastmarkets.com, an economic website and source of reference for businesses around the world, released a surprising analysis of the 2013 nickel market. Three points were mentioned. First, that there would be a 93,800 ton oversupply of global nickel stocks higher than the 87,200 tons in 2012. Second, that the market’s slump related to conditions in China and that the country, which had been the biggest nickel consumer, was now also going through the economic doldrums. Based on these two conditions, the average price for nickel was predicted at $15,250 per ton for 2013. It seems the predictions are not far off the mark. According to infomine.com, world nickel prices for the last three months (June to August) fluctuated between $13,550 and $14,300. It reached a peak on 22 August at $14,435. In response to the situation, the management of PT Vale held a meeting with PT Vale’s workers unions (the Federation of Chemical, Energy and Mines Unions, or FSP-KEP; the Federation of Indonesian Labor Struggle Union, or FSPBI; and the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union, or SBSI) to discuss the company’s most recent (22/8) condition and performance. Vice President Director Bernardus Irmanto and Head of HR Process & Industrial Relations Management, Respati Bayu Aji, were speakers at the meeting. At the beginning of his presentation, Bernardus Irmanto explained how the nickel market was still unfavorable due to high stock levels and low market demand. As a consequence
of this, the company’s financial performance had also suffered. “Management’s records show that in July 2013, the company incurred a loss of about $5 million,” said Bernardus Irmanto. This was caused by a 23 percent increase in production cost components such as employee costs, services and contracts, over the last two years. “Together, we need to reduce these and find a solution,” added Bernardus Irmanto.
Suggestions from Meeting Attendees In response to the situation, SP-KEP members enthusiastically took turns in providing various suggestions. Some examples include the need for good communication between engineers and users when purchasing production equipment; the need to reevaluate the expansion of staffing positions; the importance of sorting development projects at priority mining areas; and the need for a meeting to explain the company’s most recent condition. According to FSP-KEP Deputy Chairperson Anton Said, there were several things the company could do while implementing its cost-saving policy. “For example, it could reduce capital projects which do not affect production, control the purchase of material, and order as necessary,” Anton said. At the closing session, Respati Bayu Aji discussed employees’ overtime, which had earlier triggered a lively discussion. During the session, it was suggested that overtime was unnecessary for departments that provided support. []

The hall of Harapan Mine that afternoon (12/7) was filled with dozens of PT Vale employees. They were attending a program familiarizing a savings plan introduced by state-owned insurance company PT Asuransi Jiwasraya in cooperation with PT Vale. Employees had many questions about the benefits, requirements and compensations that they would receive from the program. Jiwasraya personnel took turns responding to the audience. The two-day familiarization program follows a ceremony, held on 11 July, which saw Jiwasraya present the management of PT Vale with savings plan policies for its employees. PT Jiwasraya Marketing Director De Yong Adrian presented the policies to PT Vale Vice President Director Bernardus Irmanto. The event was also attended by Head of HR Process & Industrial Relations Management, Respati Bayu Aji; Manager of Compensation & Benefit, I Wayan Gede Dewantara; workers union representatives; and management personnel from Jiwasraya’s Makassar, Palopo and Sorowako regional offices. In his welcome speech, PT Vale Vice President Director Bernardus Irmanto said the savings plan was part of the management’s effort to provide employees with greater benefits in their retirement. “The savings plan has an insurance and savings component. So it gives long-term protection. We hope Jiwasraya can also communicate and introduce this program more intensely so it goes well and can benefit PT Vale’s employees,” said Bernardus Irmanto.
Attendees from the workers union hoped Jiwasraya could introduce the program and communicate it to employee representatives who were policy holders. “This way, information doesn’t just flow between the provider and the management, as has happened in the past,” said Rajab from Cost & Swap Accounting, who represented the workers union. According to I Wayan Gede Dewantara, all workers of PT Vale with staff, non-staff, employee, and non-employee status are holders of the savings plan policy, with their percentage varying between 2% and 10% of their monthly salary. The savings plan is disbursed at retirement. The savings plan is aimed at staff and non-staff employees and consists of a savings and a life insurance component. The percentage of life insurance for employees under 50 years old is 0.7% of base salary, so the savings component is 9.3% for non-staff and 5.3% for staff employees. For those over the age of 50, the entire percentage goes to savings that is, 10% of base salary for non-staff and 6% for staff employees. The savings plan is fully paid for by the company. Having this savings plan means PT Vale employees will receive four retirement compensations: the pension program (DPLK), the savings plan, Jamsostek Old Age Security, and the Tenure Award. []
In his response, Jiwasraya’s marketing director also expressed gratitude for the cooperation between the two companies. “We will keep our commitment to serving, communicating and improving cooperation,” said De Yong Adrian.

PKB ke-15

The 15th Collective Labor Agreement
Four Percent Wage Increase for Employees In December 2013, several points will be reviewed.
Discussions on the 15th Collective Labor Agreement (PKB) held between PT Vale and employees, represented by the Federation of Chemical, Energy and Mines Unions (FSP-KEP) took place between October and December 2012. Starting in Makassar, the meetings continued in Jakarta and Bandung before ending back in Makassar. Using venues outside of Sorowako was expected to ensure the drafting team could focus on the priorities to be included in the collective labor agreement. Imagine if the meetings were continually held in Sorowako: if a demonstration took place, for example, team members would be immediately distracted. There was also a chance they would come late to meetings because they had other duties to attend to. “We avoided all that. Essentially, it was done so we could focus, concentrate and make sure the negotiations could proceed optimally and successfully,” said FSPKEP Deputy Chairperson Anton Said. Many issues were discussed at the time, but the ones that most concerned employees were the systems regulating wages and other allowances. The PKB meetings were attended by 19 people: 10 from the company and 9 representing employees. One of PT Vale’s representatives was Vice President Director Bernardus Irmanto. According to Anton Said, one of the significant points in the agreement was the four percent increase in employees’ wages. “It may seem small, but it means a lot, considering the company’s present situation and the drop in nickel prices,” he said.

He added: “It is worth reflecting that other companies reduced their workforce when they went through a similar experience. This means that as workers, we are considered assets whose wellbeing is continually attended to,” said Anton. Employee representatives and the company struck several agreements (see table). The 15th PKB are valid for 2012-2014. However, Anton Said pointed out, employees and the company will meet again in December 2013 to discuss several points which both sides agreed would be reviewed. “I think under current conditions, we must allow for plenty of room for open and transparent discussions to sustain both the company and employees,” he said. Pakalangkai Waste Water Treatment
Bila air mengandung Chromium warnanya menjadi magenta,” ujar Yohan Lawang, Mine Environment Engineer.

Sorowako’s soil is uniquely rich in nickel, but this also means it contains chromite. This mineral comes from ultramafic (ultrabasic) rocks an igneous rock containing silica and consists of a combination of minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, hornblende and mica which are formed in the Earth’s mantle. Olivine and pyroxene are minerals that are rich in magnesium and iron. Chromite is characterized by its occurrence in layers measuring anything from several millimeters to meters. This is due to segregation (magmatic sedimentation) and differentiations in the specific gravity of chromite. Although time, weather changes and natural conditions result in laterization (weathering), chromite tends to be resistant to laterization and remains as sedimentation underground. On the other hand, however, the weathering of the main body of ultramafic rock produces a high-grade laterite nickel deposit. This is the reason why soil derived from the weathering of ultramafic rocks contains high levels of nickel as well as chromium. Chromium is in fact a mineral that is naturally formed and occurs in layers of soil. This mineral can be found in the soil in Sorowako, occurring in chromite found in the laterite layers of soil. In its mining activities, PT Vale has been challenged to “tame” the dissolved metallic element chromium and prevent it from harming the environment. “Chromium is colorless and odorless, so it cannot be seen by the naked eye. The only way to detect it is through tests reading color changes measured with a spectrophotometer (colorimeter) and the addition of Chroma Ver reagent. If water contains chromium, the color will change to magenta,” said Mine Environment Engineer Yohan Lawang. So what has PT Vale done to stop chromium pollution? The way to do this is to build and operate a wastewater treatment facility. A chromium analysis that began in 2004 sampled several locations of mining effluent. Gravity Settler. This project, conducted in conjunction with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), was aimed at reducing Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and total chromium. However, as PT Vale’s mining and production activities increased, a new facility with the same function was required for reducing the load on Rante Pond, which was built in 2006. The new installation was named Pakalangkai Chromium Wastewater Treatment (Pakalangkai) and began operations on 13 February 2013. Operating 24 hours a day, this facility has a 14,000-liter chromium treatment capacity. This installation also has backup equipment in case the main system experiences operation failures or needs to be idle for maintenance. Pakalangkai is also 1 of 20 mine wastewater effluent locations managed by Mining to ensure environmental quality standards (BML) are constantly met.
Quality Standards In terms of BML, Pakalangkai can reduce chromium levels to less than 0.01 ppm. Meanwhile, regulations on this that is, Minister of Environment Regulation No. 9 of 2006 on Wastewater Quality Standards for Nickel Ore Mine Activities and/or Businesses require chromium hexavalent levels to be at 0.1 ppm and total chromium at 0.5 ppm. “This means the environmental quality standards of PT Vale’s chromium wastewater treatment facility are better than what is required by law,” said Yohan. Designed in early 2008, Pakalangkai’s construction involved consultants from BECA (engineering) and Les Hullet Consulting (environment); its total cost came to $1.9 million. Using a tiered sedimentation pond method, the TSS has been reduced and now meets the BML, although it requires larger sedimentation ponds. With the lamella method, it is expected that sedimentation ponds can be smaller, but the quality higher. By increasing the effectiveness of the sedimentation pond, the BML can also be expected to improve. []

Tambang tak lepas dari peran penting eksplorasi. Begitu pula roda bisnis PT Vale. Aktivitas ini ibarat awal kesuksesan roda bisnis pertambangan. Sedangkan timnya ibarat “pasukan perintis”.

Opening Forests, Sensing Nickel Walking in mud for many kilometers is a regular thing. Mining cannot be separated from the important activities of exploration. This also applies to PT Vale. Exploration marks the beginning of a mining business’ success and exploration team members are nothing less than trailblazers. They wrestle with harsh conditions deep in the forest, in concession areas untouched by humans, in search of mining areas and garnierite samples of the best quality. They are regularly startled by nature and wild animals. Jonas Kadoena is a member of PT Vale’s geological exploration team. Born in Beteleme, Central Sulawesi, on1 February 1959, he has had many experiences in exploration. He has travelled through many of PT Vale’s concession areas, from Sorowako to the development project in Bahodopi. Undeterred by rain or sun, he has travelled through one forest after another with the geological team. “In the forest, particularly when it is first cleared, it is not just knowledge, prayer and vigilance that can save us; it is our instincts as well, because all signs in the forest come from nature, and nature is unpredictable,” Jonas said. Apart from that, Jonas said, the exploration team must have excellent stamina because the difficult terrain of dense forests can be extra challenging. “It is even worse when it rains, because it becomes impassable for our vehicle. Then we are forced to walk through extreme terrain,” he added. To experience such conditions, Halo Vale joined the geological team on a trip to Block D, Petea. This is a new exploration site where work began about a year ago. Travelling by four-wheel drive, our bodies took a beating
as the vehicle bumped through rough terrain. Narrow, muddy tracks, steep and craggy, with dense forest on either side, made up our scenery half the time, starting from the moment the exploration team left Enggano. “Today we are lucky because it’s sunny. If it was raining, this vehicle would not have been able to enter the site and we would have to walk about five kilometers,” added Jonas. For Jonas, bad weather and unsafe driving conditions means there is no choice but to walk to ensure the exploration target is met. “We have to walk whether we like it or not. All it means is that we’ll have thick calves. That’s why I always carry some soothing balm in my bag,” Jonas said with a laugh. Apart from the problem of terrain and stamina, there is also the issue of navigation. “There is no shortage of stories of us getting lost, going off track, or finding out that we have just walked around in circles. In some places, compasses and GPS just don’t work,” Jonas said with a smile. When that happens, only patience and vigilance can save them.
Staying in the Forest Successfully navigating the terrain does not mean that challenges are over. The next activity is making a clearing for roads and drilling to find the best garnierite samples. This job is tiring and time-consuming: it can take up to five months, and even a year to complete.

It is not surprising that the exploration team must be prepared to camp on-site, in the middle of the forest. In Petea’s case, PT Vale’s exploration team chose to stay at Camp El Clasico, located between Block D and Block E. Despite being equipped with communication devices such as Internet and phone connections and satellite TV, Camp El Clasico is out of mobile phone range. “I stay here six weekdays with my colleagues. When I have a holiday on Sunday I go home to Sorowako,” Jonas said. How does Jonas successfully accomplish his job which is extremely risky? “Basically I enjoy adventuring and I like nature,” said Jonas, who has been with PT Vale’s exploration team since 1976. Being a nature lover, Jonas often feels a dilemma. “My job is destroying nature. I once felt that I must have committed so many sins. But one thing I am sure of: if the minerals stay underground and are not used for life, then what use is it? I like working here because I am sure the company cares for the area and will reforest it post-mining,” he said. Because of his love for nature, Jonas and the rest of the exploration team have never been tempted to capture endemic animals despite seeing them frequently when clearing the forest. “The same goes for endangered plants. We try as hard as possible not to damage them unnecessarily,” said Jonas, who is the husband of Maas’at. In fact, the exploration team is cultivating the Sorowako orchid they found in the forest at Camp El Clasico. Several pots can be seen hanging by the veranda near their dining area. “Finding orchids is a form of entertainment for us in the forest; that and snaring chickens,” said the fishing enthusiast with a laugh. Vale Ontel Community
Melestarikan Sejarah Sambil Mengayuh Sepeda Antik Merajut persaudaraan sambil bergaya tempoe doeloe. Sebelas sepeda ontel memasuki Lapangan Persesos, Sorowako, beberapa menit menjelang upacara peringatan HUT ke-68 RI beberapa waktu silam.

Mengapa Ontel Menjadi Pilihan?
Harga terjangkau. Mudah dikendarai Mudah disimpan. Tidak memerlukan surat kepemilikan Tidak perlu membayar pajak tahunan. Tidak memerlukan bahan bakar. Biaya perawatan yang murah. Menyehatkan tubuh.
COMMUNITIES
Vale Ontel Community
Preserving History While Riding Antique Bikes Forming relationships, olden-days style. Eleven vintage Dutch style bicycles or “ontel”, as they are commonly called entered Lapangan Persesos field in Sorowako shortly before the start of the 68th ceremony of the anniversary of Indonesia. In matching their wheels, riders wore old-fashioned outfits, appearing as independence fighters of ’45, Dutch colonial girls or boys, and peasant farmers. Their performance brought a smile to the face of others participants. After shaking the hands of event organizers, the cyclists lined up in formation and joined the flag-raising ceremony: they are the Vale Ontel Community (Vale Vintage Cycling Community), or the VOC.
The idea for VOC had in fact begun earlier, in 2008. At the time, the group was named Kosaso, short for Sorowako Antique Bicycle Community, and had 15 members. However, many of them left Sorowako due to work commitments. In the end, the remaining members revived the organization and renamed it VOC.
Like other clubs of “ontelists” as vintage cyclist call themselves across Indonesia, the commemoration of Indonesia’s independence is one of the events at which they are able to perform, said Chairperson of VOC Supriadi. This is because the day is usually packed with symbols and reenactments of the fight for independence and “the olden days”. The public is therefore more appreciative of all things classical. “This style and getup enables people to have a sense of the independence struggle era,” said Supriadi, who is more familiarly known as Akko’. VOC was established in 2010 by residents of Villa Danau Matano housing estate in Sumasang, Sorowako. For this reason, Akko’ said, the “V” in VOC could either stand for “Villa” or “Vale” because most of its members were also PT Vale employees. Gradually its membership expanded, attracting people living outside Villa as well as non-Vale employees. Even Akko’’, who is entrusted to lead the organization, works as a teacher at SMP 1 junior high school in Nuha.

Starting from Antiques Akko’ said the formation of VOC started from the mutual hobby and passion of its members, that is, an interest in antiques. Due to Sorowako’s isolated location, however, people found their hobby difficult to do if everyone fended for themselves. In the end, they got together to respond to the limited availability of references on antique items, including vintage bikes. So by getting together, they developed their horizon and knowledge of antiques and ontel bikes. “We swapped information and discussed the history of the ontel as well as the places for acquiring vintage bikes and their spare parts,” said Akko’, who rides a 1903-production vintage which he hunted down in Sidrap. According to Nur Alam, a VOC member and employee at PT Vale’s DSS (Defense and Security Services), by getting together members could help others who were “rebuilding” their unfit vintage bikes. “We can exchange ideas and help fix the ontel, including giving advice on spare parts,” Nur Alam added.
”Red Blazer ” Besides pandering to their hobby, VOC members are also interested in preserving history, patriotism and art. “It’s a bit like the words of our proclaimer, Soekarno: Jas merah (red blazer), don’t ever forget history as something to remember,” Nur Alam said enthusiastically. VOC is a community that is open to the public and now has 25 members, comprising people from all ages and professions. In future, VOC plans to conduct social, but still fun programs. “For example, we might conduct volunteerwork events, counseling, etc. We hope this community will continue to develop and attract more people,” said Yusman, another VOC member who works as a teacher at SMP YPS. Why Choose the Vintage Ontel? The ontel is a mode of transport that is simple and enginefree. In Indonesia they were often called kereta angin literally, “wind vehicle” which originated from the word velocipede. In terms of its construction, the vintage bike is the embryo of the motorbike. The invention of the ontel is also related to the demise of horse-powered vehicles. What is interesting, though, is that vintage bikes, and bicycles in general, are now gaining the attraction of people of all ages due to the following advantages: 1. Affordability. 2. Easy to ride. 3. East to store. 4. No need for ownership documents. 5. No need to pay annual tax-related fees. 6. No need for fuel. 7. Low cost maintenance. 8. Good for health.

Faktor Risiko Seperti hampir semua penyakit, semua orang punya kemungkinan terkena diabetes.

HEALTHY SAFET Y
Two Steps to Prevent and Control Diabetes Don’t make light of frequent urination, constant thirst, constant hunger and unexplainable weight loss. When you are eating, your body breaks down food into sugar. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps transport sugar in the blood to the body’s cells, so it can be converted into energy. The body cells of people with diabetes do not react to insulin; this means sugar is not distributed and instead becomes accumulated in the blood stream. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most commonly occurring type of diabetes. Urinating frequently, eating and drinking in large amounts and continually losing weight are classic symptoms of diabetes mellitus, which is more commonly known as kencing manis (literally “sweet urine”). People are seldom aware that they may spend years entering a pre-diabetic phase. It is only after other symptoms appear such as weakness, fatigue, frequent occurrences of pins and needles and itchiness, blurred vision, and experiencing long periods for wounds to heal that people start considering a trip to the doctor. In fact, early detection is crucial because diabetes is accompanied by many complications such as blindness, heart attacks and stroke.
Risk Factor Like any illness, everyone could potentially have diabetes. But there are some groups that have a higher risk of suffering diabetes. Genetics is one such factor. Many type 2 diabetes patients have immediate family members parents or siblings who are also type 2 diabetic. People of Hispanic, African and Asian decent have a higher chance of being affected by type 2 diabetes.
The genetic factor, however, is not absolute. Many patients without a background of diabetic family members are also affected by the illness. For these people, lifestyle is the biggest trigger: having a fondness for high-fat, high-calorie foods; lacking physical activity; and being overweight. You don’t need to wait for symptoms to appear before having an early detection. If your genetic predisposition and lifestyle put you at risk, it is not too late to consult with your doctor.
Prevent and Control A person does not suddenly have diabetes without first entering a pre-diabetic phase. Those who are pre-diabetic may take early steps to return their blood sugar levels to normal so they do not become diabetic. Research shows that you can reduce the risk of having type 2 diabetes by 58 percent by doing “just” two things: reduce your weight by 7% if you are overweight or obese, and engage in light sport. For diabetes patients, it is important to lose weight because being overweight causes insulin resistance this means it takes longer for the insulin created by, or injected into the body to reduce blood sugar levels. If you cannot reach your ideal weight, don’t worry. Just dropping your weight by 5 to 8 kgs makes a big difference. It’s not easy, but that is what can be done to prevent diabetes or control blood sugar levels for those who already have diabetes. Many type 2 diabetes patients do not require long-term medication because they are successful at controlling their blood sugar through healthy eating and keeping physically fit. []

Diet Tips for Diabetes Consume high-fiber, complex carbohydrates, such as red rice, cereals and wheat bread. Increase your intake of fresh vegetables and fruit, eaten as is or by juicing, without additional sugar. Limit consumption of white rice, sodas, food containing sweeteners or excessive sugar, and most snacks. If you are eating out, avoid fried food. Choose fruit or salads, and not hot chips, as your appetizer. Don’t skip breakfast. Breakfast ensures that the body has enough energy to perform activities and helps keep blood sugar levels at a normal level. Being hungry as a result of skipping breakfast tends to make a person eat excessive amounts at lunch. Eat regularly in moderate proportions. Eating regularly makes the body crave less for food, therefore ensuring that healthy eating portions are maintained at all times. Maintain a fixed calorie intake to keep blood sugar levels stable. This is better than consuming large amounts of calories at once then skipping them altogether at other times. Although it doesn’t need to be banned, limit your consumption of sweet food and drinks. Consume enough as a dessert, but not as a snack outside regular meal times. Choose fruit as a healthy snack. Friends can help and keep you happy. Try to ask friends or family members to go on a stroll with you; perhaps someone who would also like to improve their physical wellbeing and quality of life.
Sport Tips for Diabetes Consult your doctor before doing a sport to ensure that the activity is safe and suits your physical condition. The doctor may also adjust the amount of medication or insulin and meal portions to prevent hypoglycemia a condition when blood sugar drops to abnormally low levels. Engage in a physical activity for 30-minutes 3 to four times a week for adults, and 60 minutes for children and adolescents. Having leisurely walks, gardening, swimming, house-cleaning, cycling, dancing, weight-lifting and stretching are some recommended activities. Choose an activity that you enjoy so you will engage in it gladly and routinely. Don’t engage in physical activity for too long, or that is too strenuous. Being excessively active may trigger adrenaline and other hormones that work against insulin. This will increase blood sugar levels.
