Pembaca yang budiman.
Dear readers,
A number of company management experts have said that a company’s success cannot be measured simply by the amount of profit it earns. More than that, and the most substantial of all, is how can it survive a crisis that goes so far as shaking the corporate foundations.
It would be better if we learn from Chinese philosophy regarding crisis. In Chinese crisis is translated as wēi jī, which is rooted from wēi xiān (danger) and jī huì (opportunity). That’s why crisis always has two dimensions. For our contemplation, crisis never comes alone. Crisis always brings in another dimension which paves the way for human effort and fight. Hence, at the end of the day, a crisis gives us two choices: let ourselves be carried away in the crisis or get up and find a way-out of its turbulence. Readers, this edition of Halo Vale features a main report which tells about how Vale implementing a good management and team work that binds all company lines for practices of efficient operation. We have reasons to thank God because the efficiency initiatives came from company employees. It’s not an exaggeration if Nico Kanter says, “The ideas which come from the bottom usually are more sustainable and give birth to the sense of belonging on the part of employees. I believe if we continuously walk together we can face these challenges”. Enjoy your reading.

SURAT PEMB ACA / READE RS’ LET TERS Sehat Selamat Dua Artikel Saya sangat senang membaca rubrik “Sehat Selamat”. Banyak wawasan dan tips hidup sehat. Namun, menurut saya, porsi beritanya perlu diperbanyak. Satu artikel kesehatan, satunya lagi artikel keselamatan. Ar i s Tandi Ayu, ME M ( BN 6316) Modifikasi dan pengembangan rubrik di majalah sedang kami olah. Salah satu pertimbangannya adalah hasil survei pembaca. Terima kasih masukannya. Terima kasih masukannya.
Two Articles for Healthy Safety I am very keen on reading the column “Heathy Safety”. It provides a lot of viewpoints and tips on healthy lifestyle. But, I think, the number of articles needs to be increased. Perhaps we can start with variety of articles. Each edition, for example, can present two articles, one concerns health and the other on safety. A r i s Ta n di Ay u, M E M ( B N 6 3 1 6 ) Modification and development of columns in our magazine is being conducted. One of our considerations is the result of our readership survey. Thank you for your advice. News on Contractors Rare Why news stories in Halo Vale rarely take a look at activities of PT Vale contractors? The fact is contractors conduct many activities and have won appreciation in connection with productivity and work safety in PT Vale. Their activities are quite intensive, such as CSR programs. These however have never appeared in the magazine. R a h m a n i a , P T Hexi n d o Actually in several editions we reported initiatives and achievements of contractors in supporting PT Vale’s performance, such as scaffolding training and certification (Halo Vale edition 11) and safety recognition award (Halo Vale edition 13). For other stories, we look forward to receiving reports on activities of contractors. Thank you. Campaign on the Back Page In my opinion, utilizing the magazine’s back page for company campaign is a good idea. I hope in the future the themes of the campaign will not limited to PT Vale operations, but also concern general issues like social and culture. Z u l ki f l i R a c h m at, Proce s s P la nt ( B N 1 0 5 4 2 ) Your thought will be taken into consideration. Thanks you for your suggestion.

Perusahaan tambang dunia kini tengah diterjang ombak ketidakpastian ekonomi global.

Sedangkan sumber daya manusia mencapai 20-45% produktivitas. Hasilnya, mereka memetik efisiensi sebesar Rp7,8 miliar.

Sedangkan konsumsi batubara menjadi sekitar 160.000 ton per tahun. Dalam kuartal IV 2013, konsumsi HSFO mampu ditekan hingga 28% dibandingkan kuartal III 2013. Catatan tahun 2014, tingkat konversi penggunaan batubara sebesar 90%, melampaui target perusahaan yang dipatok sebesar 84%. CCP menghasilkan penghematan biaya sebesar

kurang lebih 60,5 juta dollar AS.

Mining companies all over the world are caught in the tide of uncertain global economy. Inflation, devaluation of currencies and trade account deficit have resulted in the fall of mining commodity prices and the rise of operational costs. Unable to control the market, the companies give many strategies a try in order to survive. One of the strategies is slashing operational costs and adjusting production volume. Price Waterhouse Cooper Australia report titled “Mining for Efficiency” released at the end of last year said the strategy of efficiency was the right step to survive the uncertain global economy. Various measures have been taken to save millions of dollars, with focus on equipment performance, production volume increase and optimizing manpower. South Africa is no exception. The country, home to many mining companies, is coming under the world’s spotlight. A research conducted by EY Global Mining & Metals Center recently found that since 2007 mining companies in the country have taken an extra control of their production costs in order to protect their profit margin. Dominated by gold and platinum producers (almost 40 percent) — whose production costs are the highest and which employ 514,000 people — depreciation of rand against US dollar by up to 20% have slowed the growth of mining companies since 2007 until last year. The situation impacted on electricity rate and fuel prices, which rose by 26 percent. The prices of engine spare parts climbed by 4.4%, steel column by 7.2% and worker wage by 12%. The highest increase however came in transportation and logistical costs which reached 60%.
Cutting fuel consumption is a key issue for mining companies.

There are 10 strategies in place, including revision of fuel demand for production, rearrangement of transportation and logistical costs, review of goods procurement practices and seeking and realizing alternative energy sources. EY Global Mining & Metal Center also says other measures worth trying to save money include special attention to productivity of workers, work safety, environment conservation. It reveals that technology and equipment only increase productivity by 10-15%, while human resources by 20-45%. Concerning work safety, successful program to curb occupational accidents can withstand acceleration of company liabilities by US$2-6 million annually. In the same way, a company’s success in reducing gas emissions through the use of renewable energy for its operations will give a plus to its performance and efficiency measures. How about Indonesia? The falling oil price since mid-2014 (to $50 per dollar) has taught state-owned Pertamina EP a lesson to develop strategic thinking. The company deals with swelling exploitation costs by reducing oil and gas production and maximizing the performance of existing oil and gas wells. Pertamina also withholds investment for new wells and replaces it with optimum utilization of old wells. Pertamina’s upstream unit in Klamono, Papua (Pertamina EP Field) has managed to curb fuel expenditures by streamlining its power generation unit. The result is efficiency, which reached Rp7.8 billion.

Cutting fuel consumption is a key issue for mining companies. This is also the concern of PT Krakatau Steel which plans to realize construction of a $80 million power plant it will need much to generate 2 x 80 MW for its steel smelting facility. The project is predicted to save 35 percent of the company’s energy spending. PT Berau Coal took a different way in response to the nose-diving coal price. The company enhanced efficiency in production line through modification of production process in mining sites.
PT Vale Measures For PT Vale, operation that strictly upholds efficiency is not something new. Since starting operation four decades ago, efficiency measures have been underway. The most concrete effort is slashing fuel expenditures through realization of conversion from HSFO into coal for its three rotary driver facilities in PT Vale processing plant (Coal Conversion Project/CCP). In the initial phase (the third quarter of 2013), the project managed to slice production costs by $100,000 per day. This is a result of declining consumption of HSFO from 144,000 ton annually to only 44,000 per annum. Coal consumption rose to 160,000 tons a year. In Q4 of 2013, HSFO consumption was further downed by up to 28% from the previous quarter.
According to the 2014 data, coal conversion rate hit 90%, exceeding the target which had been set at 84%. CCP generated cost efficiency by more or less $60.5 million. The efficiency measures also contributed to carbon emission cut. On the other hand, PT Vale’s operation of three hydro-power plants — Karebbe, Larona, and Balambano — managed to slash consumption of HSFO by 400,000 barrels and HSD by 64,000 kiloliters. The decline in fuel consumption and grease oil, compounded with the fall of HSFO price in the world market, has helped the company save 23 percent of its spending. Finally, in 2014 PT Vale managed to lower its main production expenses by 6%. The fall of nickel price in the world market of metals has also driven PT Vale to push for efficiency in supporting operational components, such as the use of operational vehicles that prioritizes mining operational vehicles, revision of the company’s need and added values of procurement of goods from operations, and minimizing office trips through the use of long-distance telecommunication technology.

Catatan 2014, Vale berhasil mengurangi pengeluaran sebesar 1,2 miliar dollar AS.

Common Efforts from across the World All the business units of Vale across the world have optimized efficiency measures. The efforts range from making full use of renewable energy to re-utilizing liquid waste. Effective and efficient operational strategy is the choice of Vale in addressing its challenges and opening opportunities to maximize its advantage. The company’s nickel refinery facility in Canada, for example, managed to upgrade the performance of its converter using a new system called Hydra Slide at the end of June 2015. The system, a result of innovation by maintenance team, can accelerate the work of the converter more safely, easily and economically than the old mechanism.

Another effort is S11D, Vale’s iron ore processing project in Carajas, Brazil, which was designed to save and process residual water from factory in a sustainable way. Through the project allocation of water for consumption is set as minimum as possible so as to support the work of the processing plant. The technology enables the company to reuse the residual water to clean heavy equipment and other mining vehicles, and sprinkle mining tracks to remove excessive dust in dry season.

Vale’s processing laboratory in Sao Luis, Brazil is implementing full automation. The result is the laboratory helps optimize productivity, reduce break times and improve work safety. “The use of computer and automation removes the factor of failure in reading sample data and speeds up production time,” specialist technician of Vale’s processing plant laboratory in Carajas, Rodolfo Pizol, said. Energy management and efficient supply are the priority of Vale. The fact is energy spending plays a significant role in Vale’s operation. In 2013 the energy expenditure reached 10.2% of the total operational cost a year in all Vale’s units across the world. The composition is fuel demand may account for 46% of the total consumption, electricity reach 25% and gas 16% for production of iron ores, fertilizer and nickel. Vale in Brazil operates nine hydro-power plants with a capacity of 1.3 Gigawatt. The electricity is also used to support processing plants of nickel, iron ore and fertilizer in the southeastern part of Brazil.
The outcome of these efforts is delighting. Vale’s performance in creating a competitive climate inside the company is fairly improving. Based on 2014 data, Vale managed to cut expenditures by $1.2 billion. The company also managed to curb administrative cost by 15%, while pre-operational spending was slashed by 40%. At the same time Vale’s metal refinery plant in Acton, UK managed to squeeze goods procurement spending by 3.3%. This was made possible through increasing shopping volume to become equity and signing more economical energy supply contracts. The company’s performance won attention from Market Realist which released its report early in 2014. The report placed Vale second among iron ore producers in the world which managed to significantly cut production costs with $23.6 per ton. In 2012-2013 cost-cutting measures initiated by Vale across the globe reached $1.6 billion.

Menjaga Tradisi, Mengembangkan Ide PT Vale telah menjalankan efisiensi sejak awal beroperasi. Terus mencari peluang-peluang penghematan melalui penerapan program, peningkatan kapasitas hingga kontes ide.
16
H a l o Va l e 15 I Ta h un 2015

Membentuk Task Force Di sisi lain, ide-ide penghematan memang diperlukan agar daya saing perusahaan terus meningkat. Selama berjalan efektif tiga bulan, Juli-September 2013, kas perusahaan berada di angka defisit 9 juta dollar AS. Angka ini cukup signifikan dibandingkan ketika inisiatif penghematan biaya belum diaktifkan. Defisit perusahaan ketika itu mencapai 70 juta dollar AS. Sejak awal 2015, harga nikel kembali merosot. Namun berkat kerja sama tim yang baik, PT Vale mampu menuai kinerja Kuartal III-2015 cukup baik. Volume produksi naik 10% lebih besar dari Kuartal II-2015.
Sambutan Positif Kebijakan penghematan internal juga disambut optimisme entitas perusahaan, termasuk serikat pekerja dan serikat buruh di PT Vale (lihat Laporan Utama hal. 38).

Conserving Tradition, Developing Ideas PT Vale has been used to efficiency measures since its early operation. Until today the efforts have been maintained. The principle of efficient and effective operation has been adopted as a tradition within PT Vale since the company was established four decades ago. Even within the past decade a number of policies and working systems were initiated to enhance efficient performance. Just look at what happened in 2011. Then PT Vale introduced Operational Excellent. The program, led by the Department of Operational Excellent, was aimed at giving a boost to operational performance in a right, precise and accurate way. Involving Operation & Maintenance Improvement Program (OMIP), Vale Production System & Environment, Health & Safety and Management System, the program synergized production capacity and “Stop The Stops” method in the operation and maintenance of production equipment. “The program helped accelerate improvement work which previously failed because of a lack of focus. One of the flaws was identified at the control of ore size in the dryer which often created problems in the kiln and furnace,” Senior Manager Process Technology, Sudirman T. Payangan, said. The program impacted on the improvement program plan, which was more consistent, measurable and structurized than it had been, and spread a positive working culture among workers. It also changed the operator’s working culture. In the past he ran and repaired machines based on instinct, but now he has consistent standard and knowledge.

There was also improvement in labor capacity to deal with equipment problems. The result is automation works in the Maintenance System & Engineering and Process Plant Automation areas, which used to be handled by consultants have since 2012 been tackled by internal human resources. There are two benefits from in-house automation works. First, it constitutes implementation of cost optimization. Second, familiarization of automatic equipment runs properly because it involves and is supervised by PT Vale engineers. When problems arise they can be easily solved. Therefore the cost for automation development and maintenance will be far more efficient. The level of security and work safety is well maintained because of persistent control by the internal human resources. This is evident in the CCP 1 and CCP 2 projects which involved and were supported by PPE and Central Engineering teams. Another efficiency initiative was reuse of components that no longer in use. The Electric Workshop team has realized this measure since 2013. The team attempted modification on variable speed drive (VSD), a tool which improves accuracy in the test of motor power for main drive, dryer, kiln and converter. With a budget of only $2,000 for modification of the equipment the company could save $35,000 (purchasing price 2005).

PT Vale’s processing plant in Sorowako. All departments in PT Vale involve to give ideas for cost efficiency.
Forming Task Force Efficiency ideas are needed to increase the company’s competitiveness. The fluctuating metal market was the main challenge confronting metal producers like PT Vale. In May 2013, in response to the weakening global metal market, the company formed Task Force Cost Saving. One of the task force’s initiatives was holding a competition of ideas for employees. “A total of 34 ideas were submitted. Employees from various levels, ranging from operator to L2, took part in the contest. The cost saving program was aimed at changing the corporate behavior and culture so as to maximize budget,” Senior Manager Capital & Project Management Muhammad Asril, who was a member of the Cost Saving Committee, said at that time. Thanks to well-knit cooperation among all lines, the company’s cost saving efforts generated significant results. Within three months of implementation in July-September 2013, the company’s deficit fell to $9 million from $70 million when the cost saving initiatives were not activated. Since early 2015, nickel price has fallen again. But thanks to teamwork PT Vale performed quite well in the third quarter. The production volume increase 10% that second quarter 2015.
Positive Response The internal cost saving policy was also responded with optimism from the corporation entity, including labor union and trade union in PT Vale (see Main Report 6). Such positive response was also expressed by a number of employees who were interviewed by Halo Vale. Denis Dayan Kadama, who works in Sample House and Laboratory Process Plant, is just an example. He says the ailing global economy and its impact on the decline of world nickel price is indeed unavoidable. “Cost efficiency is one of solutions and wise efforts the company can take in facing the global economy which remains unstable. But we have to understand that the policy needs support from all employees. The company and its employees need to be open to and share with each other. It will be wise if the company for the time being cut its profit and reallocate the money for production expenditures, so that production spending can be disbursed optimally without laying off workers,” he says. Lukman Hakim of Reduction Kiln Process Plant concurs. “All departments are very supportive of the internal cost cutting policy not by reducing the number of workers. What we have to do is exercise control to ensure that all departments can implement the efficiency measures,” he says.

Kalau satu unit dozer berarti dikali dua tiap unit,” tambah Hendrawan.
Seperti apa efisiensinya? Dengan menggunakan metode Reverse Bushing, biaya D10 hanya mencapai 18.000 dollar AS sedangkan unit D8 mencapai 9.000 dollar AS.

The long operational hours of heavy equipment in PT Vale concession area begs special attention during usage, maintenance and replacement of spare parts. This is the area of interest of the Mobile Equipment Department team. They confront the problems of maintenance cost and spare part replacement for Dozer D8 and D10 units, especially track dozer, which grow from time to time. Whilst, the heavy equipment is one of PT Vale’s most reliable equipment in its exploration and mining sites. “The price of track is soaring because of inflation and availability of its spare parts sometimes is uncertain. Yet we always need this part immediately for the sake of production,” Hendrawan of the MEM Department says.

As an illustration, to replace one side of a track, the cost reaches $18,000 (for D8 type) and $27,000 (D10 type). Track must be replaced every six months. “The price only cover one side. For one unit of dozer the price doubles (left and right Editor),” says Hendrawan. Given the fact, the MEM Team — comprising Hendrawan, Boas and Bambang Wahyu Haryono — sought an avenue to curb the cost of track spare parts replacement through modification. They name their finding “Reverse Bushing Dozer”. The modification is actually simple. In short the same component (not the new spare part) remains in use by way of turning bushing back to front and changing the shoes and bolts. “This method cost us only a half of the spending on new spare parts,” Hendrawan unveils.
COVER S TO RY
Thanks to the reverse bushing, the budget for D10 only reaches US$18,000, while for D10 unit the cost reaches only $18,000 and $9,000 for D8 using the reverse bushing method. Operating 4 units of D10 and 32 units of D8, the money that can be saved reaches $72,000 (D10) and $152,000 (D8). “So within a year the cost saving in track replacement using the reverse bushing method can hit $1,224,000,” says Hendrawan. Efficiency also happens in the time needed to change the track. Using reverse bushing replacement only lasts 14 work hours per unit. That is not a new idea actually. The MEM Team has adopted the method since 2012. The concept was then presented to PT Vale’s Cost Saving Competition Committee, which named them the winner at the end of July this year. “We will keep applying and enhancing the method for betterment in all aspects,” Hendrawan says.
Internal Fabrication Apart from MEM Team, the Support Service Team won the cost saving competition this year. Their idea is called Fabricate Corner Shroud Bucket. Asep Suharto, who represented the Department of Support Service along with A. Ardi Asdar and Bachtiar in the competition, said the idea was invented out of concern about the extremely high cost of spare part bucket of the equipment, while stock was rare and its delivery took time. The department could not predict how long the replacement work would last. This difficulty made it difficult for the Support Service Team to arrange a schedule for maintenance work of the heavy equipment bucket. Finally the team sought a solution by conducting internal fabrication, in terms of materials or manpower. The fabricated parts comprise corner shroud, edge protector and side cutter (edge shroud). The Support Service Team has managed to create a complete bucket, which is proven durable in the field and meet the needs of Mines Operations. “As of August 2015, we have been in the process of creating bucket number 6,” says Asep Suharto. Implementation of internal fabrication of bucket components has slashed material spending by 70%, accelerate procurement of bucket unit and eliminate spare part delivery time. “The expenditure that we can save is amounted to $68,000 dollar per year per unit of bucket, compared with purchase of new bucket,” says Asep Suharto.

Inovasi-inovasi dari Departemen Mulai dari lini utama hingga lini pendukung perusahaan, para karyawan melahirkan inisiatif penghematan. Berpikir bersama. Bergerak kompak.

Catatan tahun 2014, biaya penalti atas keterlambatan pemulangan kontainer tersebut mencapai 77.000 dollar AS/bulan.

Unit Road Stabilizer sedang memperba

ya sekitar 4 juta dolar AS.

Satu unit crusher memiliki 8 blow bar. Sedangkan harga satu unit blow bar senilai 600 dolar AS. Nilai pembelian komponen tetap sama, sekitar 4.800 dolar AS per unit crusher.

Innovation Ideas from Departments Many employees, from primary to supporting lines, have come up with efficiency initiatives. PT Vale employees compete to find ideas to save company expenditures. Not only are their ideas, which have been implemented and born fruits, delighting. They also have created innovation. The following are the initiatives from departments that support efficiency.
Reducing Water Consumption in Plant Area To support performance, production tools inside the factory need water. Workers also need water to wash their hands, their mud stained boots and others. Unsurprisingly the water consumption is considerably high. It has increased from an average of 45 Mgal to 59.75 Mgal per week.

“The fact that quite many water pipes leak due to age factor has contributed to the high water consumption,” says Budiman Paelongan, Supervisor of Utilities Business Support. Upon detecting the problem, the efficient water consumption initiative emerged. The efficiency measures have two goals: to curb water consumption which will automatically cut water tax and to instill the culture of wise use of water among workers. The initiatives were realized through repair of water pipes and faucets and persistent campaign for water conservation. For your information water taxl is set at Rp45/ cubic meter.
Container Consolidation to Reduce Demurrage Cost For logistics and materials shipment, PT Vale leases hundreds of containers to shipping lines. So far the movement of the containers has not been sufficiently monitored. The result is many containers are left in the site after use, while the rest has been returned to the agent in Surabaya. Consequently the company has to bear penalty, in the form of extra spending on container demurrage. The 2014 data revealed the penalty reached $77,000 per month on average. Identifying the problem, the Shipping & Traffic Team, with assistance from Material Handling, Export-Import, Warehouse and Forwarder Teams, created an initiative called “Container Consolidation to Reduce Demurrage Cost”. The initiative is implemented through establishment of a system to record container movement, operational time and deadline for container return so as to anticipate unnecessary spending.
however, although actually it is inevitable because free time demurrage given by a shipping line only lasts a maximum 14 days. Whereas container journey and consolidation from Balantang seaport to Surabaya can take more than 14 days. Automatically the deadline is prone to be missed. Such facts come under the scrutiny and study of the Shipping & Traffic Team as part of efforts to maintain efficiency and effectiveness. The measures include a plan purchase of new containers to ease the company’s dependency on rented containers.
Modification of Pump and HSFO Pipe Cleaning Method in Mangkasa Point

The result is the demurrage cost can be reduced to $47,000 per month in the first semester. Such figure is quite high, There are two types of fossil fuel that PT Vale cannot miss in its operations, which are HSFO and HSD. The company’s demand for the fuels is supplied through pumping from a tanker to a fuel storage facility in Mangkasa Point, in Bone Bay, Malili. The HSFO and HSD is pumped one after another. The frequency of HSFO pumping can reach 1517 times in a year. To keep the pumping machine and pipe clean and free from contamination, the equipment is cleaned using HSD before the pumping activity. The washing process requires 30,00035,000 liters of HSD.

Learning from the experience, the Logistics Team conducted a study on the washing mechanism. They discovered a way to curb HSD consumption called dedicated pump method. At Mangkasa Point there are four pumps that alternately trans-

mit HSD and HSFO. Under the mechanism the four pumps have their specific job. One of the pumps focuses on HSD and the three other on HSFO. The division of labor allows the team to cut HSD use to 2,000-2,500 liters with quicker washing time but maximum result. “The initiative has been in place since May 2015. Our calculation in September found the company could save at least $250,000 annually,” Logistics Senior Manager of PT Vale, Mulawarman Arfah, says. The initiative also needs zero investment because it utilizes existing resources and equipment. It only changes the method. In this case the Logistics Team is supported by Maintenance Team, simply because the consequence of the new method’s implementation requires the Maintenance Team to act quickly when something wrong happens to the HSD pump during cleaning and pumping. There is a plan to develop the idea to make it more efficient. “The idea that we will develop is the remainder of HSD used in the cleaning process is stored for future use. But based on our estimate it will require an investment worth $20,000-30,000 for modification and additional storage facility. The efficiency is deemed as not significant, only 500 liters in each pumping work. Due to the existing efficiency policy, execution of the idea remains under our scrutiny,” says Mulawarman.
Road Stabilizer for More Efficient Road Rehabilitation Maintenance cost of logistics road and supporting operational areas is considerably high. It is much more costly when major road maintenance work is routinely conducted every five years. Records in 2010-2011 revealed that major road maintenance work cost about $4 million. “The cost did not include minor maintenance work, which occurred on some road spots that required immediate repair,” Senior Manager Construction Services of PT Vale, Robertus Bellarminus Sonny Swasono, says. The Construction Services Team then looked for an idea to squeeze the road maintenance expenditure. The result was investing equipment called road stabilizer which is produced by Caterpillar of RM500 type worth $1.5 million. The equipment can recycle rehabilitated road materials. “So far when

road damage occurs, to rehabilitate it the material is excavated and dumped. Thanks to the equipment the material taken from potholes will be recycled and can be reused,” Sonny says. The equipment enables the company to save material The equipment allows the company to save materials for road overlay project up to $150,000 for every rehabilitation project. Not only from the cost side. Work hours, depreciation of equipment value, and fuel consumption can be curbed too. Without road stabilizer there are quite many heavy equipment walk about on the road while maintenance and repair work is underway. “The presence of the equipment on site helps the Civil Road Maintenance team can start road maintenance anytime they like,” Ridwan, Manager Civil Road Maintenance Production Plant & GCT PT Vale, says.
Turn Blow Bar Upside Down, Benefitting from Track Dozer The Construction Services (CS) Team also offered another idea, which aims to minimize replacement of components for material crusher, which are blow bar and liner. It can be done by turning the blow bar upside down so that the other side, which is still in good condition and therefore usable. “We used to dispose of the blow bar and replace it with a new one if one of it sides was worn out after using it to grind stones and materials. Now with minor modification, we only need to turn over the blow bar so that we can utilize the other side,” Robertus Bellarminus Sonny Swasono says.
Dozer in Mines Area.
COVER S TO RY
How much does it save cost? Each unit of crusher has eight blow bars, each of them costing $600. A blow bar must be replaced after operating and producing 3,000 tons of material. “Thanks to the new initiative, the purchase of blow bar components remain the same at $4,800 per one crusher but production volume can double at 6,000 tons,” Sonny says. The same happens to the liner. If previously the CS Team bought new components for replacement, now they utilize track dozer and with minor modification they can substitute the new components. Efficiency resulted from the initiative reaches $2,000, assuming that a crusher has four units of liner which each costs $500.
Plant Operation of PT Vale. As we may know down time can impede the operation of the factory which in turn result in losses.
Reuse of Used Pallets for Delivery of Hazardous Waste
Bring Down Overtime at Hydro Power Plant Efforts to curb overtime at hydro power plant is one of the priorities of the Department of Utilities in their bid to slash unnecessary operational expenditure. The initiative has at the same time given a boost to the performance of the power plant and enhanced efficiency and effectiveness. The initiative was part of 15 new cost-saving ideas proposed by the department. At least two of the initiatives have been adopted since early September, while the remaining are expected to commence in stage in the last quarter of 2015. Some of the new initiatives concern a new working system and anticipatory measures to prevent unplanned down time when furnace is shut down. “The key is both equipment maintenance operators and personnel have to work hand in hand in conducting on condition monitoring of the system and equipment. If they discover abnormality operation analyst should immediately call the maintenance unit to make early repair and the operator switch one of the generator turbines to the standby mode,” says Yusri Yunus, Supervisor Hydro
Warehouse crews make pallets from used material.
Pallets from the purchase of new barrels to store hazardous waste were the object of the Warehouse Support Team’s initiative. The company used to buy too many pallets but their use was short lived. As soon as the barrels reached the warehouse, the pallets were dumped, despite the fact that the company also needs them when sending barrels containing hazardous waste to be sent to its processing plant in Bogor. “Within a year the Warehouse, which is responsible for transportation of hazardous and non-harmful waste, purchased 8-9 containers of pallet 5-6 times. Each container consists of 20 pallets which cost Rp180.000.000 (?) each. We can imagine how much we can save if the pallets can be reused,” Pata’ Padang, team leader of Investment Recovery and Waste Handling at PT Vale. Learning from the practice, since the end of last June Warehouse Support has reutilized the pallets after slightly modifying them. “Not only does it save the company spending. The idea also falls in line with the concept of reusing something which is regarded as waste. It now becomes a plus in the PROPER assessment by the government,” says Pata’.

As a result, the Warehouse Team, which comprises two workers, can produce an average of 20 pallets per two weeks. Initially the pallets were produced every weekend, either Saturday or Sunday. But to anticipate extra cost, which is overtime, the schedule has been shifted to in between work hours of the team members. “At first we worked in the weekend, but now in normal work days. Each member spares 3-4 hours to produce pallet,” Pata’ says. The initiative has also generated a mutual symbiosis with the Department of Process Plant. It is because the department keeps abundant stock of pallet from the company’s purchase of materials. “We receive pallets from them and they several times have ordered back pallets from us for the purpose of material delivery and storage,” says Pata’.
Boosting Use of Project Material Remainders The use of project material remainders is not a new cost-saving initiative. The idea came out after Karebbe hydro power plant was completed at the end of 2011, and started to run in 2012. Implementation of the idea has significantly contributed to the company’s coffer. “Based on our records, the idea has managed to save corporate money by an average of $2.5 million in 2013. “The figure is average cost saving in a year,” Supervisor Warehouse Support of PT Vale, Andi Firmansyah Arsyad, says. The initiative is aimed at reducing inventory if material remainder to produce new goods, reducing the company’s burden to buy new materials which actually are already in
place in the warehouse and encouraging users to buy materials carefully so as to avoid wastage. “The target of this initiative is eliminating or extremely curbing excess materials in the company. Any purchase of materials must follow a plan and is utilized accordingly so as to keep the company fund from unnecessary waste,” says Firmansyah. Although already in its third year running, the idea has faced various challenges. “The toughest challenge is how to appeal to users to use materials. Although it has just entered its third year of operation implementation of the ideas is still problematic. “Indeed the existing system forces users to take extra efforts to check the stock and condition of the project material left-overs which they could reuse,” he says. The challenge turns out to encourage the Warehouse Team to work harder. A number of steps to create interest among users in using unused project materials have been taken. Among them was arranging the used materials in new, tidy shelves and storage. This keep the quality and condition of the used materials well so that they can be reused. The Warehouse Support Team also worked with the Department of Engineering and Construction, as the main user as well as owner of the largest part of the material remainders, to take inventory of the materials. Lastly the team invested a system that can help prospective users to check the list of material remainders which are available. “According to our plan, the system will be on trial in October 2015. Under the system, not just users but also all Vale employees can take a look at the catalogue and the condition of material remainders that we keep in the warehouse accurately and quickly before use,” Firmansyah says.

High level of water in nickel ore during processing at the screening station will force the plant to work harder and increase quite significant amount of additional cost. “Based on our estimate, every 1 percent of water level increase will increase operational cost by hundreds of millions of rupiah every week,” Abdul Rauf, Manager of Ore Quality System and Support at PT Vale, says.

This challenge was the concern of the Department of Mines & Exploration, especially Ore Quality System & Support, which generated a joint solution called “Project to Reduce Water Level at SSP”. The initiative was implemented in various steps. First, installing flow meter and automatic metering at Station 8 so that nickel spraying could be arranged in an ideal volume of water according to the standard. Second, because the spraying was conducted manually, operators did not have a standard, therefore training for operators of the screening station was necessary to standardize the spraying process and familiarize the campaign. “Besides, we distribute posters that call for water saving, cost saving and recommended techniques and standard of nickel

good quality and second, we negotiated tender/contract with goods suppliers,” Manager of Stock Purchasing at PT Vale, Achmadi Sumadi Rais, says. According to Achmadi, the two efforts had already been the focus of the department for quite some time. “In our department, there are about 200,000 items which are registered in our database. If we do not arrange them well the procurement of goods will be inefficient,” he says. The focus was translated in the increase in the number of goods procurement contract using Vendor Held Stock (VHS) system in order to lower the value of inventory, and the number of goods procurement tender using Fixed Price Agreement (FPA) system to speed up goods procurement process. Through the VHS mechanism the company’s assets in the form of ordered goods are not necessarily stored in its warehouse, but in the vendor’s warehouse. “But when a user wants certain goods, it is available and only needs to be delivered to the user,” says Achmadi. Then, where is the efficiency? Thanks to the method the Stock Purchasing Team does not need to waste time dealing with administrative works, like ordering and filing the stock of goods, and procurement tender. “They can now focus on three jobs: increasing savings through negotiation, proposing alternative goods and increasing contracts either using FPA or VHS,” says Achmadi.
Adding More Items of Contract and Negotiation The availability of materials and products to support the company’s operations starts from the Department of Procurement and Contract Admin. The department has a strategy to support the efficiency measures. “We took two efforts. First, we looked for alternative goods that was more economical but in

Opini tentang Efisiensi Biaya

Kami berharap jangan hanya digagas cost efficiency tapi wujudkan tanpa mengorbankan sisi kemanusiaan.”
Ketua SBSI PT Vale Wasinton S aragih
Ketua SP-KEP PT Vale Hasbi Bidol.
Ketua SPSI PT Vale Mustamal M ahagu.

What They Say about Cost Efficiency
“The only way we can do in facing the fluctuating but tends to decline price of nickel is cutting operational costs. We really appreciate the initiatives of each department and employee to save the costs. Because the ideas came from the bottom they are sustainable and promote the sense of belonging among company employees. I believe if we walk together and continuously we can go through this challenge.”
“In dealing with this difficult time each individual in PT Vale has to remain optimistic. If efficiency policy is to be taken, nonemployee components will be prioritized.”
Nico K anter, CEO & President D irec tor of PT Vale
Bernardus Irmanto, Vice President D irec tor of PT Vale
“Implementing efficient operation is a common challenge and must be conducted in a sustainable manner. Never be complacent when the crisis eases. In facing the challenge a transparent management is needed. The company has adopted it but not yet reached the lowest level. There is an anecdote which says “The management is silent when the company gains, but when embroiled in a dispute the noise reaches the lowest level”. When making a decision or policy the management has to listen and seek input from the employees and involve the labor union.”

“We once faced such a global crisis in the past and it was accepted by both the company and employees as a challenge to survive. We believe with transparent communication this crisis will enhance our solidarity in dealing with it. We also expect there will be efficiency measures that aim at individuals. The company’s initiatives must be offered openly to all employees and proposed by employees voluntarily, not the other way around.”
“Efficiency and effectiveness of financial performance and company management must be conducted by a global company like PT Vale. But they should not only take form in cost cutting in every department. The program should be followed up with supervision and monitoring of the budget use. The program should not even be in place only when the nickel price is down, but be made consistent and sustainable. The management must dare to take austerity measures which directly affect the company’s survival by taking into account employees’ welfare and labor agreement between the management and employees, in this case labor unions. Of course we need to build the culture of trust, transparency, accountability and good communication in order to enhance the sense of belonging and solidarity in facing this crisis.”

KINER J A
Fasilitas LGS ketika tahap pembangunan, September 2015 (kiri).

Commisioning of Lamella Gravity Settler
LGS Performance is Effective LGS is capable of carrying out treatment effluent with a volume four times larger than sedimentation pond. It also significantly lowers the chrome level.
For the first time since its inception in April 2014, Lamella Gravity Settler (LGS), a new waste treatment facility belonging to PT Vale, underwent a trial in June 2015. During the trial, PT Vale cooperated with the Technology Research and Implementation Board (BPPT) in reviewing the existing functions and installation system which is already constructed. The trial, which took place on June 15, 17 and 18, 2015, showed the performance of LGS was effective. Its runoff increased from 49% on the first day of trial to 61% on the third day, while the effectiveness rate of Chromium 6+ (Cr) decline could be curbed by 98-99% during the trial.
Not just that. Comparison of two different types also displayed the effectiveness of LGS in conducting treatment effluent improved. Baffled pond measuring 2,700 square meters only demonstrated liquid waste sedimentation rate of 2,700 cubic meters per hour. LGS with pond measuring 1,380 square meters managed to carry out treatment effluent at a rate of 7,860 cubic meters per hour. That means the LGS performance now is better than the previous study, in this case reducing total suspended solid (TSS) concentration higher than in ordinary baffled pond. Because

the effective area of LGS is far wider than ordinary sedimentation pond, LGS can withstand the increase in TSS rate longer than ordinary ponds. Following the trial, the installation at Rante, Sorowako, or Area LC3, will undergo full monitoring in October-November 2015 from PT Vale and BPPT team. “Full monitoring will be performed on the whole compartments, in order to look at its system optimization. The activity will also seek input to operational sides so that the system can work effectively and efficiently,” LGS Project Manager, Topan Prasetyo, says.
Conforming the Regulation The project goes in line with the government regulation, especially Environment Minister Regulation No. 9/2006 on Liquid Waste Quality Standard for Nickel Ore Mining Activities and/or Mining. “There are 11 parameters of water quality that must be fulfilled before liquid waste can be dumped into the water body,” says Topan.
Currently PT Vale has adopted several liquid water treatment methods, which include adding ferro sulfate to reduce Cr and building sedimentation pond to lower TSS. Nevertheless PT Vale Indonesia often faces impediments, particularly when it comes to parameter of TSS and Cr total rate. Throughout 2011, a number of spikes in TSS and Cr total scores occurred because of high rainfalls. In 2013-2014 PT Vale built more ponds and expanded several sedimentation ponds to avoid the spike through “Mine Effluent Improvement” project. Treatment of Cr dan TSS waste using conventional system, which uses ordinary sedimentation pond, in fact is adequate to meet the quality standard. The construction of LGS was the initiative of PT Vale in a show of its care about the environment and efforts to go above the quality standard stipulated by the government. The project was part of “Six Strategic Projects” launched by PT Vale and approved by Vale Global in 2014.

Termasuk Datu Luwu Andi Maradang Mackulau Opu To Bau dan perwakilan manajemen PT Vale.

Bentara Budaya Jakarta, akhir Agustus 2015.

Luwu Heritage Exhibited in Bentara Budaya Jakarta PT Vale supports Bentara Budaya in exhibition themed “Kris and Maritime Sacred Weapon”. The greatness of Luwu heritage has inspired Bentara Budaya team, a cultural institution under Kompas-Gramedia, to trace back the history of Luwu and Matano iron in July 2015. The expedition, which was aimed at documenting special heritage of Luwu for four days, received backing from PT Vale. The results of the expedition were presented as one of the materials of the exhibition, which was themed “Kris and Maritime Sacred Weapon”, held at Bentara Budaya building in Jakarta, on August 2015. The exhibition featured cultural heritage of kris from three regions, which were South Sulawesi, Sumatra and Cirebon. Pompessi Luwu brought in 30 items and kris collected by its members. “The heritage which we bring for exhibition includes ancient traditional weapons of kris, badik, ponai, spear, knife and axe. Also exhibited are several lemme or heritage items which were retrieved from the bottom of Lake Matano and caves around it,” chairman of Pompessi Luwu Indra Wijaya said. The exhibition was opened by Maritime and Fisheries Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti. In her speech the minister said the event was representation of appreciation and conservation of the national culture and tradition. ”The event is part of efforts to respect the roots of the nation. A nation that wins respect and is known for its greatness is one that can respect its origin,” the minister said.
The minister also affirmed that maritime was a new spirit, because development had so far relied on agricultural culture. Susi said in her speech the current government envisioned ocean as the nation’s future. Maritime affair should stand out. Therefore the exhibition in Bentara Budaya Jakarta was among the efforts to appreciate the origin of Indonesia as a maritime nation. “The ministry has decided to stop commercialization of treasure hunting. I have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to write to a number of countries to return national heritage to where they belong,” Susi Pudjiastuti said. Present in the seminar were chairman of the Bugis Makassar Polobessi Club Ahmad Ubbe and kris maker (panre) Amri SB, Datu Luwu Andi Maradang Mackulau Opu To Bau and representative of PT Vale. Executive director of Bentara Budaya Hariadi Saptono said when the Bentara Budaya team conducted a study and visited East Luwu, they concluded that Luwu was a region with a great culture. “When we set our foot on the land of Sorowako and discussed with a number of youths who cared for Luwu heritage and culture, we came to a conclusion that this region was blessed with a great culture and tradition,” he said.

Ahmad Ubbe concurred. He said rich iron ore supply in the central part of Sulawesi, Luwu, Banggai, and Tobungku was behind the development of iron ore smelting technology and knowledge in South Sulawesi. Tana Luwu has been renowned as a center of iron smelting and production of sacred objects since the era of Majapahit Kingdom. Even Gulf of Bone and Luwu waters were the main routes for international trade and exploitation of metal industry. Iron was then a popular commodity. Tome Pires (1515) said Luwu iron was exported to as far as India at that time. ”Majapahit was in need of strong, light and easy to hammer weaponry system. The character of Luwu iron, which is rich in nickel, suited the criteria,” Hasanuddin University archaeologist Iwan Sumantri said.
Challenge On the other hand, the charm of Luwu land heritage has been eroded, according to community leader Datu Luwu Andi Maradang Mackulau Opu To Bau. “Almost all the sacred objects belonging to Luwu Kingdom are now kept in the Netherlands. To beat Datu Luwu it turned out the Dutch had to take the sacred objects beforehand,” Datu Luwu told the seminar. He added that the sacred weapons were not purported for defense only, but also belief to God. The heritage is a symbol of civilized human beings.
A kind of Luwu kris (1).The Indonesian Kris exhibitions held at Bentara Budaya Jakarta, August 2015 (2). Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti when attending the exhibition(3,4).
Through the event Bentara Budaya Jakarta confirmed the presence of Luwu cultural and heritage loving and preserving group like Pompessi Luwu, which is one of forces that will help Luwu iron regain prominence in international forum. “It would be better if the regional government and other parties support the activities of Pompessi Luwu in its bid to preserve one of the most popular Luwu cultures and civilization,” said Hariadi. The emergence of Pompessi Luwu owed its origin from the will of young generation in Luwu Land to conserve iron crafting culture and heritage. ”I started to dive into Lake Matano in 2013, and since then I have seen a lot of spears, swords, badik and other iron-made objects in the bottom of the lake. Initially I just ignored them because I didn’t know the history of the objects,” said Rendra Gunawan, a member of a diving club who is interested in the world of charmed weapons (tosan aji) and then joined Pompessi. From his interaction with other Pompessi members and search of information in the Internet, Rendra finally discovered the history of East Luwu as a centre of iron craft industry in the past. ”Now we have retrieved and gathered the ancient weapons so that they will not be missing or sold to artefact hunters,” he said.

Sebenarnya konsep BP3K Model bukan hal baru. []

PT Vale Supports Organic Farming in East Luwu Realizing Nuha Model of P3K Model as a center of organic farming information and guidance for farmers in empowered areas. Introduction of organic farming to farmer community in PT Vale areas of empowerment in East Luwu, South Sulawesi has increasingly received war welcome from both the local government and community. To boost absorption of technology and agricultural advisors in the areas, PT Vale and East Luwu government expanded the responsibilities of the Board for Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry Guidance (BP3K) in Nuha district as a pilot project of organic farming development early in September 2015. The project was built under an Integrated Community Development Program (PTPM) scheme which involved consultant CSR A+ Indonesia and a farmer group experienced in organic farming, Joglo Tani, from Yogyakarta.

In the area of BP3K Nuha which covers two hectares, a number of facilities and supporting infrastructure were built. They include a green house, meeting hall (baruga), family herbal medicine garden, fruits and vegetables garden, fish pond, rice field and plant seeding facility. BP3K Nuha serves as a model of development of organic farming technology, coordinator of BP3K Nuha, Burhanuddin, said. The institution will become a centre of communication, information, learning and ecotourism. “In the future it will be developed into a community seed center, food storage, and community agricultural health center,” Burhanuddin added. BP3K Nuha is also projected to become a model for three other BP3K in the empowerment areas of PT Vale, which are Towuti, Wasuponda and Malili.

“Support from PT Vale to realization of BP3K Model is implementation and display of commitment to the company’s PTPM in the sectors of economy and agriculture. We also aim at productive, sustainable and environmentally harmless farming,” Social Development Program Manager Busman Dahlan Shirat said. Now BP3K in Nuha district has 39 farmer groups under its guidance and 18 other groups in the fields of forestry. With only six people running the organization, the institution has found difficulties in reaching farmers, particularly those living in remote villages. “So far we provide guidance to the farmers en masse. The farmers were gathered based on the commodity they plant and then we held a guidance meeting simultaneously for them,” Burhanuddin said. In the future the guidance activities will be centred at the Model BP3K if it is already equipped with learning facilities that the farmers will need.
In fact the concept of Model BP3K Model is not new. The Model BP3K in Sukamantri district in the West Java regency of Ciamis, for example, won the title of the country’s best public service delivery unit in the field of agriculture in 2011. Field counsellors who run BP3K in Sukamantri managed not only to improve the capacity of farmers, but also train the jobless. Youths who took part in the agricultural guidance program received an opportunity to cultivate a field around the BP3K Sukamantri office. Most of the youths who participated in the training have now emerged as successful farmers and farm industry players. They also created innovation, such as empowerment of people living near forest, empowerment of women, agribusiness consultation and telecommunication computer innovation.

Maintaining Tyres, Keeping Production Wheel No matter where or when, anytime a call reaches them for heavy equipment tire repair, the Tyre Shop Team will quickly respond. A unit of dump truck 785C PT Vale was seen parked in Tyre Shop, Mobile Equipment Maintenance (MEM), in Sorowako, in mid-July. So big was the heavy equipment that the area was almost wholly filled. “The unit has just come in. It has already operated for four months and its tyres need replacement because they are quite bald. To replace one whole tyre will take 3-4 hours,” Heri Nur Saleh, Group Leader Tire Shop. Dump truck is just among the list of PT Vale heavy equipment that Heri and his colleagues in the Tire Shop have to take care of. Every day at least two units of heavy equipment need tyre replacement or maintenance. The types include haul master, loader, grader, trailer, and mini-sized equipment like forklift. But haul master is the heavy equipment that frequently visits Tyre Shop the most, considering the tough challenge and terrain it has to face. Coming second is dump truck. A tyreman does not necessarily works at Tyre Shop. They often have to go to the field when an emergency call to replace the tyres of heavy equipment rings. The call can come anytime, anywhere and know no compromise. They quite often receive a call early in the morning, on a scorching day or during a heavy rain. “When such emergency call reaches us we have to quickly come for help. It simply because production cannot run if the tyres of operational vehicles catch a problem,” said Heri. Tyre Shop is part of the busy MEM. Its main jobs are repair, replace, and maintain tyres of heavy equipment. Other jobs include scaling and repair rusty rim. They are hired to detect indications of damage on each tyre and subsequently take
60

necessary actions, either repair or replacement. Heavy equipment always needs tyre inspection every day. Repair work may last 3-4 hours per unit, but for certain conditions and units, replacement may take 6-8 hours. The role of Tyre Shop Team plays in the operation production chain of PT Vale is considerably crucial. There are hundreds of heavy equipment and medium-size trucks whose tyres need monitoring. The team are required to immediately respond to each report regarding tyre problems. “We only deal with tyres. But the impact can be seen in production,” Jammes Herold Dumais, Team Leader Maintenance Tyre Shop, who is Heri’s superior. Given their major role and responsibilities no wonder the budget for the division is quite fantastic. On average it spends Rp 2 billion a week. Huge? The figure is relative, because a new dump truck tyre can reach Rp 1.2 billion.
PR O F IL E
Efficiency Initiatives Nevertheless, MEM-Tyre Shop offers a program to lengthen durability of heavy equipment tyres without having to compromise quality and safety. In collaboration with Mines & Exploration Department, the tyre shop initiates a program called Mining and Maintenance Tyring Improvement. It is in line with the company’s cost efficiency initiative. The program, which has been running over the last two years, consists of enhancement of driving skills of heavy equipment operators so as to enable them to be friendly to the tyres, on-location maintenance work in mining and operational areas and works related to loading point. “One of the most important points to keep a tyre from leaking or balding too quickly is driving style of the heavy equipment operators. They have to keep speed stable and avoid overloading,” Heri, who was born in Palopo on Sept. 5, 1976, said.
Heri Nur Saleh checking a dumptruck unit in Tyre Shop, MEM Department in Sorowako.
The second step is detecting ban problems accurately before determining the next action, because the level of tyres damage varies. A tyre may have to be replaced because it is already beyond repair. There is also a tyre that can be repaired and reused by way of tyre recap or vulcanization. However it must be ensured that a number of tyre parts, such as bead wire, remain in a good shape and thick enough for vulcanization. The vulcanization has curbed expenditure. As a comparison a vulcanized tyre only costs one third of a new tyre’s price. In terms of duration, a vulcanized tyre can last 2,000 hours as against a new one’s 4,000 hours. Of course vulcanized tyres are more efficient.
Support Each Other Heri has been working in PT Vale for 10 years. He says he is happy and enjoys working in his unit. Apart from obtaining new knowledge about tyre, he feels the atmosphere of kinship when working with his colleagues. “We support each other and look like siblings. Therefore we feel our workload is light,” says the man who supervises three contractual workers.
Heri, who is married to Deasy Irawati Mone who has given him three children, also hopes for PT Vale’s success in the future. “The world nickel price is increasingly shining so that it can impact on the company’s revenue and its employees’ welfare,” he says. In the eyes of Jammes Herold Dumais, Heri is a committed employee who can work in a team, upholds discipline and is agile. “He is a person who cares about what others expect from him,” says Jammes, who is delegating jobs as Acting Part Coordinator to assess RAC di Tyre Shop to Heri.

Membina Atlet Muda Usia komunitas ini baru tujuh tahun. Namun peminatnya semakin banyak. Mereka rutin menggelar turnamen dan memiliki program pembinaan atlet muda.
Gedung D Gym, Sorowako tampak dipenuhi pemain ping pong. VPC berdiri sekitar tujuh tahun lalu.

Training Young Athletes The community is only seven years old, but many enthusiasts have joined it. They routinely hold tournament and arrange a program to groom young athletes.
Building D Gym in Sorowako is seen crowded by table tennis players. The playing field is divided into four areas in accordance with the age groups and orientation of players. Old, young and children have different motivation. They range from those who only want to play a game to those who train seriously to become athletes. Those are some of the routine activities of Vale Ping Pong Club (VPC) which holds public training every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. VPC was established seven years ago. “Initially we practiced in the area of ATS (Sorowako Engineering Academy —Ed). Only in the last few years they have moved to D Gym,” Nur Mutmain, head of VPC who works in the Procurement Departement.
VPC was founded to accommodate enthusiasm of PT Vale employees to play table tennis. They finally formed VPC. Initially only 20 people joined VPC, but now the number has doubled given the intensifying activities and development of facilities provided by the company. They come from various departments within PT Vale. In its training program, VPC affiliates itself to Sorowako Table Tennis Association (PTMS). As a result D Gym is more crowded when training program is held. In cooperation with PTMS the community has organized four tournaments. In the latest tournament in 2014 not only athletes from across South Sulawesi flew to Sorowako to take part in the competition, but also a number of athletes from Central Sulawesi. In August 2015, PVC for the first time held an internal table tennis competition, featuring 16 teams from all departments within PT Vale.

Olympic Champion Ten of the PVC members are kids. For this age group VPC set up a young athlete training program. Having run since September 2014, the program is supervised by a special coach who was brought in from Makassar. He is a former athlete who competed in regional sports events (Porda). “To monitor the progress of young athletes our VPC ping pong coach stands by in Sorowako,” says Andri Ardiansyah, Secretary of VPC who also works as rehabilitation engineer at PT Vale. Although the community is relatively young, its young athlete training program has born fruits. They include Aldy Zaqi who finished second in the table tennis competition at the National Student Olympics of Sports in South Sulawesi level in June.
Aldy is a son of Abdul Hakim, employee of PT Vale di Mines & Exploration Department, who is also a VPC member. “Looking at their talent and interest a number of kids will undergo training session to become athletes. Aldy is one of them,” Mutmain says. Before leaving for the tournament Aldy underwent intensive training. “I trained every day for 2-5 hours,” says the sixth year elementary school student in Singkole, Sorowako. In fact Aldy only recognized ping pong two years ago. “I like the way the game is played with agility,” says Aldy who idolizes Chinese professional player Zhang Jike.

Misalnya demam, muntah, mengalami fotofobia (merasa sakit bila terkena cahaya) dan fonofobia (merasa sakit ketika mendengar suara), mati rasa hingga sulit bicara.

Turunnya estrogen memicu sakit kepala.

Beware of Migraine If you complain about migraine 2-3 times a month you are among of acute sufferers. You’d better see doctor. A study jointly conducted by World Headache Alliance and World Health Organization in June 2015 concluded that migraine was a disease that could not be taken lightly. The impacts of ailment can not only disrupt your daily activities and fitness, but also indicate problems in your head. When migraine strikes, one may suffer from an ache on a half of his/her head, strained neck, difficult to concentrate, sore bones, fatigue and aggressively emotional. In some cases other characteristic symptoms arise, such as vomiting, fever, photophobia, phonophobia, numb and difficulty to speak. The ratio of people with migraine is quite high. Two in seven adults are feared to frequently complain about migraine. In women the cases are three times higher than men. For moderate sufferers migraine strikes only twice a year, which for acute sufferers the headache comes 2-3 times a month. The results of the study discovered that migraine is inherited. It is passed on by parents or grandparents.
Strangely the research found that 70% of people with migraine realize and know the disease but are reluctant to see the doctor. If migraine strikes, they simply choose practicality by consuming analgesic which is sold freely. The drug combines codein or cafein with common pain killer like aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen. The characters of analgesic if consumed more than three days is prompting side effects in the forms of vulnerability to headache. This is what is called “chronic daily headache” which can happen for 15 days in a month for three consecutive months. Slow but sure, migraine will change into acute headache, which will affect metabolism in a more massive way. Digestive system, for example, will slow and the body’s capability to absorb drug and liquid will drop. In fact the decision to take analgesic or other drug to address migraine is not right. Drinking enough water to avoid dehydration is better, especially if vomiting accompanies migraine. After that you can take a rest in a dark and quiet room. Tender massage on forehead and neck will be relieving. Applying a compress with different temperature repeatedly on neck and forehead will also help.

Diseases with Headache as Symptoms
What Triggers Headache
1. Stroke
1. Weather
Beware is you complain about headache frequently and have a record of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. That may be an early indication of potential malformation of brain blood artery.
2. Tumor or Brain Cancer
Normally extreme heat or contrasting change from heat to rain can trigger a headache. The change affects the brain’s chemical as a result of changing air pressure, humidity and temperature which drastically drop or increase.
Tumor or brain cancer can be marked with repeated chronic headache in an increasing intensity from day by day.
2. Little Sleep This will cause strained eye muscles and body will lose flexibility so that it easily trigger a headache.
3. Brain membrane infection, HIV/AIDS, Lung disease
3. Diet
The three diseases which are caused by virus have symptoms that include headache. It usually is accompanied by high fever, cough, convulsion and unconsciousness.
4. Metabolism and Body Electrical Disruption The disease can take form in strangulation because of the minimum oxygen and water that blood can carry. It normally happens to mount climbers at a certain altitude, pregnant women whose blood pressure is abnormal.
A number of food nutrient which are believed to potentially trigger a headache are cheese, chocolate, sour fruits, beas and salty food and MSG. For some ice cream may spark a headache, albeit only for a few minutes.
4. Body Positions and Movements Bowing, walking, sitting, bending foot for too long or incorrect sleeping positions can ignite a headache because they prevent nerves from working optimally.
5. 5. Drink Coffee, alcohol and sodium can spark headache. Even for some people dehydration is another cause of headache.
6. Stress Tips to Avoid Migraine 1. 2.
3. 4. 5.
Protect your head from sun heat when outside the room. Protect also your eyes with sunglasses. Avoid consuming food that contains MSG and synthetic taste enhancing additives, which normally are found in crackers. Avoid caffeine and sodium, including alcohol and particularly red wine. Orderly meals. Avoid extreme fragrance such as perfume, house cleaning fluid or anti-insect spray.
Two in three people experience stress. But headache will arrive when the stress passes. The reason is hormone that resists stress all of suddenly drops so as to enlarge blood artery and ignite headache.
7. Belated Meals Belated meals cause blood sugar level to fall and spark a headache. On the contrary excessive meals (particularly if they contain too much sugar) will also ignite a headache.
8. Too much exercise Too much exercise will also trigger a headache. The reason is exercise will increase blood circulation around the head and neck. Blood vein will enlarge and spark a headache. Routine exercise 3-5 times a week can reduce stress and avoid headache.
9. Hormone This normally happens only on women, particularly those in the period. Headache occurs because of a decline in estrogen.
