T1 – Basic facts EU = an organisation of European states 27 member states (2014) The Czech Republic joined in 2004 economic integration common policies (e.g. open border policy) cooperation between member states headquarters in Brussels – Belgium
EU institutions: The European Parliament - legislative and monitoring powers
The Council of European Union - represents the national governments
The European Court of Justice - responsible for the laws
The European central bank - oversees financial issues
T1 - History the idea of creating EU - after the WWII aim – to secure the peace in Europe + economic stability • 1951: ECSC = The European Coal and Steel Community • 1957: EEC = The European Economic Community • 1991: Maastricht treaty – established the EU • 2002: the euro became the official currency • 2004: the Czech Republic joined EU + 9 more countries • 2007: Lisbon Treaty – Bulgaria, Romania joined EU
T1 - Member states • 6 original member states: Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg • 2004: the largest enlargement of EU the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Malta • all member states have to follow EU laws and can use its benefits (funds…)
T1 - EU symbols • The European flag a circle of 12 gold stars on a blue background represents the union of all the people of Europe • The European anthem “Ode to Joy“ by Beethoven used since 1972 • The Day of Europe - 9th May commemorates the first idea of creating EU in a speech of French foreign minister Robert Schuman on 9th May 1950

T2 - Top EU principles • A single currency not all the states use it – strict economic criteria advantages: makes travelling easier, comparison of prices… disadvantages: different economic situation…
• Freedom of movement “Schengen Agreement“ - allows free movement within EU countries (not all of them are part of it, e.g. UK) passport is not needed, just ID no controls on borders
• Education development education and qualifications are accepted in all EU countries possibility to study at any school/ university in EU programme Erasmus for students
• Peace keeping EU wants to prevent conflicts contributes to stability in Europe and the world common approach to foreign policy and military actions
• Job opportunities free job market – the aim to keep unemployment low trade and business are supported job creation is promoted by qualification training etc.
• Environmental care regulations to prevent air and water pollution in all member states control of harmful production processes support of ecological projects
