Ca. 27,5 x 41 cm. € 1.250,00 Proof-plate. - After the Dutch action against Palembang in 1821, two aquatints were made by H.P. Oosterhuis (the battle on the river and the embarking of Sultan Machmoed Badaroedin) , accompanied by a leaf of letterpress. ‘No date of publication is indicated, and there is no evidence that the work was published since only proof plates are known. They must have been executed in about 1822 or 1823, and rank among the rarest of nineteenth century prints of Indonesia, an additional degree of rarity arising from the fact that they are aquatints, a medium of illustration seldom used by early nineteenth century Dutch engravers’ (Bastin-Brommer N 177). - The beautiful aquatint plate depict the embarking of Sultan Machmoed Badaroedin on H.M.S. Including: Geestige en vermaekelijke reysbeschryving .. naer Oostindien uytgevaren voor Raed van Justitie, in den jare 1668. Aernout van Overbeke (1632-1674) was a wag. His Verses , which later on came to include his travelogue, were reprinted numerous times. The tenth edition appeared in 1719. His travel account is not based on a diary, as most of them are, but written in the epistolary style instead. Van Overbeke’s ‘letters’ are helter-skelter, they allude to memories, contain allusions and double-entendres, they are larded with Latin quotations, and never stops showing how witty he is (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.19). - Landwehr, VOC, 1540. 267 PALMER VAN DEN BROEK, W. At that time scarcely existed any accurate knowledge about the language. Sundanese or as it was sometimes called Mountain-Javanese, was supposed to be a kind of coarse Javanese dialect. Raffles’ opinion on the relation between Javanese and Sundanese was expressed in the following way: ‘the Sunda, with reference to the Javan, may be viewed in much the same light as the Welch is to the English’ .. In 1660 he was present at the Dutch siege of Makassar (in Sulawesi), and in November 1661 visited Colombo, in Ceylon. During 1661-62 he participated in the campaigns of Rijcklof van Goens along the Malabar coast, and in 1664 he was in Bengal and Arakan. In Batavia in 1667 he collected information about the loss of Zeelandia (on Formosa/Taiwan). He also visited Sumatra, the Moloccas, Amboina and the Cape of Good Hope, finally returning to Holland in October 1665. Schouten was an observant traveller who explored inland into the environs of nearly every portof-call, sometimes by himself or with a small group of comrades. His narrative, full of anecdotes as well as information gleaned about countries he had not visited became particularly popular with readers in the eighteenth century, when it was published in no fewer than seven editions (Howgego, Encyclopedia of exploration, p.947). Because of its extraordinary literary quality this travel-account stayed very popular till to-day. - A fine copy. Cf. Tiele 991 (note); Cat. Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was a famous Dutch scholar of Oriental cultures and languages and Advisor on Native Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. ‘He knew more about Islam than the best-informed Muslim and more about colonial government than the Colonial Office itself, and many an opponent was antagonised or even silenced by his vitrolic criticism’. With Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) a new chapter begins in Dutch Islam scholarship in general and the study of Indonesian Islam in particular. .. In spite of all the criticism, no one intending to seriously study Islam in Indonesia will be able to avoid reading Snouck Hurgronje’s work and consulting them again and again’ (BolandFarjon, Islam in Indonesia, p.16-17). It is astonishing to observe how this genius arrived at a nearly complete understanding of the contents of Batak texts with the scanty data concerning the Batak language occuring in the literature in his student days. After his work all these older data lost their importance. .. In the dictionary the Batak words - given in Batak script - are arranged according to a sequence by Van der Tuuk and based on the phonic order of the Sanskrit alphabet. XXIV,528; X,552 pp. Wallace’s (1823-1913) second, longest, and most significant expedition was to the relatively underexplored Malay Archipelago between 1854 and 1862. His journey took him first to Singapore and then Borneo, where he hunted and observed the orangutan (1855-1856). Heading east to the Moluccas group, he explored Amboyna and Ternate during 1857 and 1858. In 1858 Wallace traveled to Lombok and Bali in the Timor group, recognizing this group of islands as the boundary between the two primary continental influences dividing the natural history of the archipelago, the Indian subcontinent in the northwest, and Australia in the southeast. The remaining three years of Wallace’s travels (1859-1862) took him east to the Papuan group, where he explored Macassar, the Aru Islands (where he studied the bird of paradise) then New Guinea. This was interspersed with return visits west to Ternate and Amboyna, and the Celebes group for the first time. He visited Sumatra before returning to England via Singapore (Speake, Encyclopedia, p.1264). This is a magnificent combination of interesting sketches of travel and vivid pictures of natural history. - Bastin-Brommer N 564; Tiele 1195; Cat.
