EDITOR’S REPORT First of all I like to thank all those who congratulated us on being able to go back to our lovely home on the hill! Yes.... we are still unpacking 7 million boxes of household stuff. But Martin has told me I can throw out everything that does not make me happy. This is a dangerous statement if one starts the day in a less then happy mood. So Martin is now going around checking all the waste bins to see what it is that does not make me happy! Anyway that brings me to the following. I received an email from an NSC member, who left Christchurch after the quakes, to tell me they are now moving from their earlier chosen refuge to another city in New Zealand. No, they are not coming back to Christchurch as it makes him “feel too much of Rotterdam” Hellooooooh......which Rotterdam? The city just after the bombing; during the rebuild or the way it is now? I personally (and I think many with me) are proud how Christchurch is shaping up after the major disaster of some years ago. I know there are still many spots that need more than just a bit of attention. But what about all that has already been rebuilt and the many old and ugly places from before the quakes which have disappeared and where we now find new and bright venues instead? That is why I have chosen some photographs on the front of this Echo of a beautiful new building and that happy place, New Regent Street, just to remind the doom thinkers that the rebuild is really happening in Christchurch. There is more to come, just have faith!!! You may have noticed that this issue of the Echo is slightly later than usual that is because of the AGM which was held on the 28th of June and it was thought you might like to receive the latest information regarding this important meeting. While mentioning this meeting: Did you know that only just over 20% of financial members were present and that only 1 member present was under the age of 50. Isn’t it great to be able to make use of the facilities of the Society when and if you need it; join in the cultural happenings, etc.? All the Society asks in return is for you to be present at an Annual General Meeting once a year. Looking forward to see you there next year! Yoka Saris

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Firstly, I like to thank you so much for voting me as your President. It was lovely to meet with a number of our members during last Sunday’s AGM. I look forward to meet the rest of the membership in the near future. Secondly, someone raised the question why the committee had not acted on last year’s 3rd remit: Future of Netherlands Society Christchurch Inc. It was decided during last year’s AGM that: “The Committee is directed to explore options for the land and clubrooms to ensure that it will not be sold. The Committee will call a Special General Meeting before the net AGM to vote on options.” It was pointed out that the committee last year was working with an insufficient number of members. This made such an important task impossible to realise. So the committee asked for members willing to be part of a sub-committee who would like to investigate our options. When we have a few ideas we will organise a Special General Meeting to share these with the membership. It is my intention to hold this meeting in the beginning of 2016. [email protected]. Thirdly, the Vice President (South Island) of the Federation of NZ Netherlands Societies spoke re changes which have taken place within the Federation. Its constitution has been changed to allow certain Trusts, such as for instance the Dutch Connection, to become affiliated. As soon as we have a clear answer from the Federation’s President we will publish this in the Echo for your information. It leaves me to say that I am looking forward to become the NSC president and I promise to do everything in my power to make the Society a strong and above all a special place for young and old to spend leisure time, traditional and culture events together! TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE NETHERLANDS SOCIETY CHRISTCHURCH Het New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB) doet onderzoek naar families waar de ouders een taal uit het land van herkomst doorgeven aan hun kinderen. Daartoe zoeken wij ouders van jongeren (leeftijd 16 tot 26 jaar), geboren in een land anders dan het land van herkomst, die bereid zijn een interview te geven over hun ervaringen. Zo mogelijk zouden wij ook jongeren afzonderlijk willen interviewen. Het onderzoek wordt gevoerd onder leiding van Associate Professor Una Cunningham van de Universiteit van Canterbury. Wij zouden het zeer op prijs stellen als u (als leden van de Nederlandse vereniging) ook anderen op de hoogte wilt stellen van dit project. BRIDGE CLUB NEWS Against all expectations the bridge club is still going. We lost some members because of the traffic mayhem on Marshlands Road at 4.00 pm. So now we start on a Friday at 10.30 am and finish at 2.00 pm and here end the traffic problems. I have noticed some of our members playing Klaverjas. Why won’t you come and join us again on a Friday morning? Normally we have 3 to 4 tables. We are now also part of the Youth Of Yesterday and share the coffee and biscuits! Give it a thought. ZITTEN
(Column van Pauline Cornelissen) Ik sprak iemand van wie de vriend Braziliaan was. Hij leerde Nederlands en verbaasde zich het allermeest over dit: hoe vaak Nederlanders het over ‘zitten’ hebben. En dat is inderdaad vaak, als je er even over nadenkt. “Ik zit hier al een uur te wachten”, kun je zeggen, ook als je niet aan het zitten bent. “Ik zit thuis”. idem dito. Je kunt namelijk best thuis zitten als je in werkelijkheid aan het rondlopen bent. De oorspronkelijke betekenis van zitten heeft iets te maken met het plaatsen van het achterste op een horizontaal vlak. Maar er zijn veel gebruiken die daar in de verste verte niets meer mee te maken hebben. Wat denk je van deze: “He,he, jongedame, niet aan de knopjes van het fornuis zitten!” ‘Aanzitten’ wordt bijna altijd gebruikt in de kinderlijke sfeer (“Het was een heel leuk museum want we mochten overal aanzitten!”) Stel dat je als je Braziliaan bent deze kindelijke betekenis van ‘aanzitten’ hebt geleerd, dan moet het heel verwarrend zijn dat er soms bij een diner ook aangezeten wordt maar dan is het juist weer iets sjieks waar geen kinderen aan te pas komen. Om nog maar te zwijgen over deze zin. “Er zit kauwgum aan mijn broek.” Zeer vreemd. Maar dat is nog niet alles, want we gebruiken ‘zitten’ ook voor kleding: “Deze trui zit het lekkerst.” Dat geen Nederlander hierbij denkt aan een trui die op een stoeltje zit, lijkt me voor een buitenstaander moeilijk te begrijpen. En omdat ‘zitten’ hiermee blijkbaar nog niet genoeg gebruikt wordt, zeggen we ook nog “die zit!” als iemand een rake opmerking heeft geplaatst of anderszins gescoord heeft. De vraag is natuurlijk: Waarom gebruiken wij ‘zitten’ zo vaak? Of anders gezegd: Wat zien wij zitten in zitten? Zegt het iets over ons zittende bestaan? Zitten wij vast aan onze bankstellen en bureau stoelen, en heeft het woord ‘zitten’ van hieruit onze taal veroverd? Zouden Brazilianen het leven meer dansend bekijken? Het klinkt als een cliche, maar het lijkt me aan de andere kant ook weer geen toeval dat juist een Braziliaan struikelt over dat zitten. Of probeer ik het allemaal weer te cultureel te duiden en berust het allemaal maar op toeval? Dat zit ik me nu al dagen af te vragen.......mmmmm?Otas quasperis pre volor sitiuntum utem volu

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS EMBASSY Dutch passport applications in New Zealand as from 1 October 2015 Dutch citizens in New Zealand are kindly reminded that from 1 October 2015 it will only be possible to apply for a Dutch passport at the Embassy in Wellington. From that date on it will not be possible anymore in Auckland and Christchurch. In 2014 the Embassy already distributed information on this subject via meetings with the Dutch community, newsletters, letters to Dutch clubs and social media. The new situation will have an impact for many Dutch people around New Zealand. However, a number of new developments can be helpful: Validity period of passport: Since March 2014 new passports, applied for by adults, will have validity of 10 years, so that they don’t need to be renewed every 5 years. The validity of passports issued to persons younger than 18 will remain 5 years. Apply in the Netherlands: The number of municipalities in the Netherlands where you can apply for a new passpport when living abroad has increased. So the advice is to use that opportunity if you need a new passport when visiting the Netherlands. There is even a passport desk at Schiphol, which can help you if you make an appointment in advance. Please be aware that in order to apply for a passport, even inside the Netherlands, you often need supporting documents. Please check this with the municipality in question. Be quick: For those Dutch citizens in New Zealand who live from Wellington and whose passport epires in 205 or beginning 2016, the advice is to apply for a new one before August 2015. Don’t wait too long. It is possible that you need supporting documentation which takes time to gather. For example a birth certificate, marriage certificate, documents from the netherlands or another country where you or your family lived before. Moreover, the Embassy can only accept complete applications. Dual nationality: If you have both Dutch and New Zealand citizenship (which is possible in a number of exceptions) or if you have more than two nationalities, it is very important to always renew your passport within 10 years. If you don’t do this, you risk losing your Dutch nationality. For this reason it is very important to be on time, at least 3 months before the end of that 10-year term. Certificate of Dutch nationality: In case you don’t need a Dutch passport for travelling because you have a New Zealand passport, please consider the possibility to apply for a Certificate of Dutch nationality. This document can be applied for in writing at the Embassy. But, it cannot be used for identification or travelling. Questions? Please contact

KLAVERJAS CLUB ‘ONS GENOEGEN’ Alweer een maand voorbij, ze vliegen voorbij alsof het dagen zijn! Angstig maar we kunnen het ook bekijken van de kant dat we ons beslist niet vervelen! We hebben ons laten vertellen dat het Federation Cup Tournament ook weer een succes is geweest. Het aantal deelnemers wordt steeds minder en dat is wel jammer voor de organisatoren natuurlijk. De Whanganui kaart club is als winnaar uit de bus gekomen. Proficiat! “Ons Genoegen” organiseerde een Card-drive en we konden met moeite 7 tafels samenstellen tot dat er om half negen op de dag van het kaarten een telefoontje kwam van een van de spelers dat hij onverwacht niet zou kunnen deelnemen. Toen moest ik op het laatste moment 2 spelers afbellen en dat is niet leuk. Maar net voor de start van het spel kwam de persoon in kwestie toch nog opdagen en een andere speler was het helemaal vergeten dus was er weer een geluk bij een ongeluk (Senior moment? Ed.) Dus geen 7 tafels maar 6 en een scorekeeper. Maar het werkte goed en alles liep gesmeerd! Er was genoeg te eten en te drinken totdat een “clever Dicky” te veel water bij de koffie gooide en het niet te drinken was. Ik dacht zelf dat ik het goed deed, nouja, weer wat geleerd: Schoenmaker, hou je bij je leest! De winnaars deze dag waren: 1) Thea Beulink; 2) Agnes Stolp; 3) Richard van Lindt. Na een wijntje ging een ieder weer tevreden naar huis. We doen dit nog eens dunnetjes over op 19 juli want dan spelen we de Ring-In Competition, dat dit jaar georganiseerd wordt door de Upper Hutt Klaverjassers. Het is en blijft nog steeds het goedkoopste tournament: $6.00 per speler. Elke speler speelt in haar of zijn eigen clubhuis. Dus ook geen extra reiskosten! Uitslagen van de afgelopen maand: 2 juni: 1) Theo van Vuuren, 5554 punten; 2) Wim Slot, 5522 punten; 3) Bep van Polanen 16 Juni: 1) Johan Nieuwenhuize, 4996 punten; 2) Richard van Lindt, 4992 punten; 3) Corrie den Hollander, 4972 punten. YOUTH OF YESTERDAY We are so looking forward to the spring as we seem to feel the cold more as we grow older. Some weeks ago there was so much rain that we learned from the greenkeeper of the golf-club there had only been one rainfall similar to this one on Queens Birthday last year. ECHO ANNE FRANK TREE OK FOR FIVE MORE YEARS. The horse chestnut tree which Anne Frank wrote about in her Second War diary can survive another five to fifteen years, according to eight tree experts, the Volkskrant reported last week. The local council and the Anne Frank Foundation want to cut down the 160-year old chestnut tree, saying it is a danger to the public and the property. But plans to chop down the tree in December were halted by the courts which ordered further investigation. The eight experts - four representing the council and four chosen by the tree protection foundation - agree that the tree has been attacked by fungus but say it can be kept alive for at least five more years and possibly fifteen The annual cost for keeping the tree, including a steel support system, is put at some 10.000 Euro a year. Meanwhile, the Anne Frank house announced last week that record number of visitors in 2007. Over one million people, mainly from the US and Britain, visited the house on Prinsengracht in Amsterdam where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis. (Source Dutchnews.nl)
LIEFDE VOOR KANT Sinds Jan van Geelen stopte met roken, is hij in de ban van kant. Hij zoch een activiteit om met zijn handen bezig te zijn, om af te komen van zijn verslaving. Hiermee werd een nieuwe maar wel gezonde, verslaving en passie geboren. Hij volgde vele cursussen en sloot met succes de opleiding tot kantdocent af. In zijn vakanties bezocht hij antiekmarkten en winkeltjes in binnen- en buitenland om kant te kopen en indien nodig te restaureren. Zijn opgebouwde collectie kant is een van de grootste en waardevolste verzamelingen in Nederland en is tot en met Dinsdag, 1 september a.s. te bezichtigen in Museum “de Kantfabriek”, Americaanseweg 8, 5961 GP Horst, Limburg

ECHO THE NETHERLANDS SWELTERS AS TEMPERATURES HIT RECORD LEVELS!!! The temperature tipped 37.3 degrees in Maastricht last week, makking it the warmest July day ever recorded in the Netherlands, broadcaster NOS said. Later that week the warmest evening was recorded since 1901. In Arcen in Limburg, the temperature did not dip below 24.1 degrees. In coastal regions, however, a sea breeze means the temperature is being kept below 28 degrees. In addition, there may be some localised thunderstorms , weather forecasters predict. This heatwave has led the Dutch railway company NS to reduce services on some routes to head off the risk of the rails buckling. A number of events, such as fun runs and shows involving animals, have also been cancelled or brought forward to the following weekend because of the heat. The high temperatures have also increased the risk of heath fires and a code orange warning has been issued for large parts of Noord-Brabant and Limburg. Although the warm weather will remain for some time there are also some showers expected.
A DUTCH FLAVOUR FOR A FRENCH INSTITUTION THE TOUR DE FRANCE STARTS IN UTRECHT The Tour de France has a huge following in the Netherlands and this year on the 4th of July Utrecht hosted Le Grand Depart - the great start of the round France cycle race. The 2015 Tour de France is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total of more than 3.300 kilometers. This year the first two stages took place in the Netherlands - one in Utrecht itself and the second one from Utrecht to Zeeland. The city pumped 15m Euro into the event and expected between 500.000 and 800.000 visitors between July 1 and 5. After the Netherlands the massive tour moves on to Belgium for the third stage from Anwerp to Huy.

Koning voor een dag! Als Club lid, Leen de Boer, (bijna 94jaar oud) voor 1 dag koning van Nederland mocht zijn en dan wel op Prinsjes Dag dan zou zijn troonrede als volgt luiden: “Landgenoten, Regeren is vooruit zien en als we in de toekomst kijken dan moeten we toch bezorgd zijn over onze energie voorziening. Bestaande voorraden van olie en gas minderen snel en de regering is meer dan ooit overtuigd dat wij aangewezen zijn op windkracht. Ons land, dat overal ter wereld bekend staat als het land van windmolens, is tevens het land dat een vooruitstrevende rol speelt in de moderne wind energie. Wind energie is al enige jaren de snelst groeiende energie bron in de wereld. Aan onze universiteiten wordt hard gewerkt om wind te bundelen of te bevriezen in tijden van overvloed om te gebruiken gedurende windloze dagen. De aanplant van peulvruchten moet ook worden verviervoudigd en daarbij zal de edele bruine boon in ere worden hersteld. Iedere man van Neerlands stam moet wind leveren waar hij kan! Ook onze veestapel moet haar aandeel bijdragen en veehouders worden getraind om ieder (luchtje) zuchtje wind op te vangen. Omdat de meeste windturbines bij de zee staan wordt speciale transport beschikbaar gesteld om grote bevolkings groepen naar de kust te vervoeren. Dan gaan we naar Zandvoort aan de zee, we nemen broodjes en koffie mee. En Vader, Moeder, zuster, broeder, oom Piet, tante Griet en het hele familie klusje gaan dan als het nodig is blazen, blazen! Want de molens moeten draaien! Wij willen wind, veel wind! Wind, wind en nog eens wind. Westen wind, Oosten wind, Noord en Zuiden wind. Wind uit iedere directie; koude wind, warme wind. Boven- en onderwind! Hazewind....en wind van Pa, Moe en van het kind. Wind, al moeten we zelf blazen maar wind moet er komen Er ontstaat een groot probleem als er weinig of geen wind is. Dus zal de regering een aantal noodmaat regels moeten nemen. Ook de ziekenhuizen, waar heel wat wind verloren gaat, zullen hun aandeel moeten leveren. Er zal een jaarlijkse prijsuitreiking worden georganiseerd voor bedrijven en personen, die de meeste wind produceren. Zo als u ziet: Iedere vorm van wind zal moeten worden benut. Ook het Konklijk Huis wil niet achterblijven. De Koninklijke tuinen worden beplant en bruine bonen staan geregeld op het Oranje menu. Wij willen tezamen graag ons windje bijdragen voor het algemeen belang en voor ons dierbare Vaderland!
