Since the last issue of the Echo a lot has happened: The St Nicholas picnic at Spencer Park. 120 children welcomed St Nicholas and another 150 grown ups where there too to join in the fun and games. Photos on FaceBook show all those athletic Mummies and Daddies doing sack races and the tug of war. The Mummies won this game (with a little help of their friends!!!). St Nicholas had a busy afternoon chatting to all his little and not so little fans! Then there was a St Nick’s afternoon for his more mature fans who also seemed to have had an enjoyable afternoon with all kinds of delicacies and the beautiful handknitted Christmas tree decorations. (I believe Betty van Boven had signed a contract with St Nicolaas Ltd. to make hundreds of these little beauties!) The New Year’s Picnic was attended by approximately 70 people. The weather was great, the food delicious and although a few of the entertainment committee members were on holiday all went extremely well because of professional help of Janice and Arie Geerlofs. The NSC is very grateful for this couple’s support now already a few years in a row! 2015 promises to be an exciting year not only for the NSC but also for me. The Entertainment report will enlighten you what there is being organised in the months to come. As for me.....well, at last our house will be repaired after the earthquake damage of more then four years ago! We will have to move out for about 3 months. Where to we are not quite sure yet but I am sure things will work out somehow! And anyway what is a little bit of stress here and there? Yoka Saris (Below Christchurch Christmas Parade, Dutch Float)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT My report this month is rather short as I have been very busy in November and December last year. But I feel the membership was in capable hands of the hardworking entertainment team during that time. This year is very important as it is 50 years ago, to be precise on 20 March 1965, Saturday night, at 8.00pm, nearly 200 young and keen Dutch people came together at the St Peter’s School Hall, in Fisher Avenue and the Netherlands Society Christchurch was born! The first executive committee members elected that year were: President: H Oorthuis; Secretary: A Williamson; Treasurer: J Hilgeholt. A lot has happened during this half century and because of this your committee is now in the process to organise a celebrationary weekend from 20th until the 22nd of March. The entertainment report in this Echo will inform you of the program. Also this year, on Tuesday, 5 May, it is 70 years ago that WWII ended in Europe. As there are still many amongst the members who remember this well the NSC will celebrate this occasion too. Further information will be published in the March issue of the Echo. I hope you will be able to join us to celebrate these unforgettable events! Olga Verstappen LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dit jaar bestaat the NSC 60 jaar! Joop Coppens RECIPE FOR REFRESHING SUMMER DRINK Dehydrated water: Empty contents of can into a gallon of water; stir until disolved; chill and serve!

SCHAATSEN.......? GA IJSZWEMMEN! DAT WAS EVEN SCHRIKKEN! Page 6

ONCE UPON A TIME........
Story telling goes back till time began. But since film and TV emerged in modern society the real-life story tellers faded into the background. My childhood was filled with story tellers: My favourite story tellers used to be my Mother and Father. Mamma with the sweet romantic ones, mostly with happy endings. But Pappa told the adventurous stories, with very wicked and often hilarious twists. Centuries ago if a story teller planned to come to a village or town it was foretold by a so called forerunner, a person who appeared in advance to announce the coming of an important event. Nowadays we read about a stage-show or theatre-play in the newspapers or via TV advertisments. In November last year I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from a lady, who described herself as being an old fashioned story teller. She said she told stories for young and old. She lives in the Netherlands and was together with her husband on a six months tour from Iceland via Hawaii and was ending her tour in New Zealand. She offered to come and tell stories in Christchurch for the Dutch community free of charge. In short I hastened to book her for the St Nicholas gathering at the Everglades and the Dutch School De Klomp asked her for a session with its Dutch language pupils. To go by the reactions from the people who attended Barbara de Vries of Theater Rabarber on the 6th of December at the Everglades they really and truly enjoyed her stories. Theo Boekel of Echo Radio With Pictures filmed Barbara, while telling a story and inerviewed her beforehand, this can be seen via www.echo.or.nz. I personally got so inspired by her way of story telling that during the holidays I entertained my grandchildren during a lunchbreak in a similar fashion. Although I don’t have her looks or her talent it was a great succes and from then on it was my duty to tell at least one story a day! (I must confess that my daughter had forbidden the children to use any electronics during the holiday). Yoka Saris

Dear members of the Netherlands Society, The New Zealand U19 Youth Korfball team has entered the 2015 World Youth Korfball Championships in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. As you may know, korfball originated in The Netherlands, more than 100 years ago. It is a mixed team sport and still in its pioneering stages here in New Zealand. It is a huge European sport and currently being looked at with the possibility of being included in the Olympics in the coming years! So it’s very exciting to be part of a developing sport for our country. This is the first time New Zealand has sent a team to Europe for a tournament and one of the Netherlands Society members (i.e Boris van Bruchem) is part of this team. Team members are mainly from the Canterbury region and some from the West Coast. The team consists of 8 girls and 7 boys ranging in age from 15 to 17 years. They are busy fundraising as much as they can, but the cost of this trip is approximately $5.500. We are looking for a sponsor and in return would have your company’s logo added to the uniform and travelling gear, so great advertising! If you would prefer to make a donation, that would be greatly appreciated too. Please contact Yoka Saris (editor of the Echo) to bring you in contact with the manager of the team. To find out just what Korfball is please check out the following websites: www.ikf.org or for information on the tournament, click here: www.u19kwc.com

Wim
THE YOUTH OF YESTERDAY The YOY ended the year 2014 with a lovely Thai luncheon, fruit salad and ice-cream for dessert and coffee and speculaas. The forty-two people who attended this festive gathering felt truly spoilt. I like to thank all the others who have helped with the organisation of the YOY throughout the year. And also those people who attend these happy meetings, without you it would be boring . We wish you all good health this coming year. The new YOY season started on Friday, 23 of January. We look forward to welcome you too next Friday! Tini

NEERLANDIA CHOIR CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTMAS CONCERT
The annual Christmas Concert of the Neerlandia Choir took place on Tuesday, 23 December 2014 in the St Mary’s Church in Halswell. A balmy summer’s evening, a church full of people with just one purpose: To get into the true spirit of Christmas. Many families, young and old were gathered! I find it so moving to see many young men accompany their aging mothers to this typical Dutch event. I hope that my sons will do the same for me when the time comes and I can’t make it on my own! This evening we were so privileged to be entertained by the very talented Christchurch musicians, Veronica van der Knaap, piano, and Cornelia Didenco, violin. This fantastic duo put the ‘angel on top of the Christmas tree’ of the Neerlandia’s concert. I am proud to say that I heard it mentioned (even after loosing more members this year because of age related happenings) Neerlandia has still not lost its ‘oomph’ and still has the power to stir its audience! Of course we are indebted to our amazing inspirational musical director, Bruce Blanchard, and talented accompanist Michael Zon for this result. I like to take this opportunity to thank the Netherlands Society Christchurch for its ongoing financial support to Neerlandia. Without this support the Choir would not be able to stay in existence. The Choir still provides for our 24 members a musical and social interest each Tuesday evening. Besides its 2 yearly concerts Neerlandia also performs often in rest-homes, hospitals and during ethnics happenings. Yoka Saris

ECHO TEN DUTCH CHEESES (All you have ever wanted to know about these Dutch Cheeses) There is more to Dutch cheese than the plastic versions of Gouda and Edam you tend to find in foreign or even some Dutch supermarkets. Here are some of our favourites and the hard cheese if we’ve missed yours out. Dutch hard cheese, by the way, is either jong (young, 4 weeks), jong-belegen (young-mature 8-10 weeks), belegen (mature, 16-18 weeks), extra belegen (extra mature, 7-8 months), oud (old, 10-12 months) or overjarig (very old, more than 18 months). 1. Leidse kaas: Cheese with cumin seeds to give it flavour. 2. Friese nagelkaas: Cheese with cloves and cumin seeds, an acquired taste for some and a tried-it-once-never-again experience for others 3. Bleu de Wolvega: Organic French-style blue cheese from Friesland. Very tasty. 4. Goudse kaas, oud: Crumbly, salty, pungent with overtones of sick (don’t let this put you off, just hold your nose and eat this delicious cheese on a piece of roggebrood (rye bread.) 5. Zeekraalkaas: Organic sheep’s milk cheese with samphire, made in Terschelling. Yum! 6. Geska Glarus: Not a Dutch cheese but such a pervasive presence on Dutch tables since times immemorial that it deserves a place. It’s stinky, powdered Swiss cheese which tastes like shredded cardboard. Expats who miss it can buy it in the ‘home sickness shops’ on line. 7. Rommedoe: (Roum is the Limburg dialect word for cream and doe is derived from the French doux, or soft) A hold-your-nose Limburg cheese which is no longer made in Limburg because of Dutch regulations but pop over the border into Belgium and you’ll find it under the name Hervekaas. It is a production which goes back to the fifteenth century. Sharp, pungent and stinky. Don’t take it with you while travelling on any form of public transport. 8. Edammer kaas: Small round cheese, its production goes back to the 17th century and is one of the best-known Dutch cheeses in the world. It was known as a ‘klootkaasje’ or ball (as in gonads) cheese. 9. Texelse schapenkaas: This cheese was made during the 16th and 17th centuries on the island of Texel. One of the more surprising ingredients was the juice of boiled sheep’s pooh which gave it is characteristic colour (green) and taste (sharp). It also helped to preserve the cheese. This practice was discontinued in the 1930’s but you can still buy the pooh-less variety. 10. Limburger: Loved by comedians for its pungent smell – often compared to body odour – Limburger cheese was made in the 19th century in the Duchy of Limburg, which is now divided between the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Nowadays it is mainly made in Germany. They are welcome to it. Note: Some Dutch cheeses have brand names, like Leerdammer (also: Maasdammer) or Old Amsterdam. They have nothing to do with either Leerdam, Maasdam or Amsterdam. They have been given a brand new name by the cheese marketing men. The Edam and Gouda in foreign supermarkets on the other hand have nothing to do with cheese. (The Dutch News.nl)

J A Saris, 1923 - 2000
